Dining Out They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there is if you’re willing to do a little digging for it, and sometimes that means literally. If you’ve ever fancied foraging, growing your own grub or even becoming totally selfsufficient then this could be the book selection for you. If not, then you could just toss the page into a nice salad, and eat that instead!
Wild Food: A Complete Guide for Foragers Roger Phillips A leading expert on food foraging, Phillips hasn’t managed to kill himself with a dodgy mushroom yet (and he’s been doing it for decades) so it’s a safe bet that what he says, goes. In this easy-to-identify guide to the edible plants found in our
woodlands and hedgerows, he even throws in some recipes for good measure. If you’re just thinking, ‘nettle soup’ then you’ll be disappointed, because Roger’s recipes are delicious. You’ll never need to buy a bag of salad again.
The Hedgerow Cookbook: 100 Delicious Recipes for Wild Food - Ginny Knox and Caro Willson If you can pick more than you can eat on the spot, standing next to a hedge in the sunshine, then this is the book for you. It’s all very well
taking home all those delicious (free!) berries, but if you don’t know what to then do with them all you’ll end up with are more unidentified bags of something-or-other in the bottom of your freezer. This book is all about turning your own mini-harvest into a feast. Instead of jam, why not try ‘fruit leather’ or how about making a flavoured cheese, or cordial or even booze?! You’re only really limited by how many blackberries, sloes, rosehips and wild garlic bulbs you can find, so it’s really worth getting out and taking advantage of nature’s bounty.
and Dave are the boys for you. They’re realistic in their approach to living a more green and organic lifestyle, appreciating that most of us are just looking for some ideas for becoming a little more selfreliant and not up for doing a total ‘Tom and Barbara’. They have a refreshing and fun approach to recycling, growing your own produce and making sure your home is more energy efficient. It’s not at all preachy, and with small suggestions it could definitely help to improve your life and outlook, without the need for a total, intimidating overhaul.
Practical Self Sufficiency - Dick Strawbridge and James Strawbridge
The Moneyless Man: A Year of Freeconomic Living - Mark Boyle
You might recognise father and son team Dick and James from the television. You’d at least remember Dick’s moustache if you’ve ever caught their programme ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green’. The Strawbridge family double-act are all for making small changes that can transform the way we exist on this planet. There are top tips for reducing your carbon footprint, excellent advice on how to lower your household bills and even how to build a wormery. It’s great fun to read and if it doesn’t help you at all then you can at least buy it in hardback, and use it as a shelter.
The Self Sufficient-ish Bible - Andy and Dave Hamilton
For anyone who always has good intentions but for whom the idea of living the ‘Good Life’ is a little bit on the extreme side, then twin brothers Andy
Former businessman Mark Boyle swapped his suit for a pair of jeans and some rubber gloves and vowed to live for an entire year without spending a penny. He knew that it wasn’t going to be pretty, but his journey through bad hygiene, scavenging and living a truly frugal existence is fascinating. Dabbling in self-sufficiency wasn’t for Boyle and his approach is extreme to say the very least. He’s gone totally ‘off the grid’ and, according to his friends and family, he may also have gone off his rocker. Whether you could adopt his philosophy or not, it’s a compelling idea and one that will make you question how you live and what’s important.

Dear Readers,
ur front cover picture of the children’s Carnival procession is undoubtedly one of the most popular events in the annual Ringwood calendar and a great finale to end the summer festival season. It’s certainly one of my favourites! There are just so many different events in and around the Ringwood area at this time of year ranging from the very rural Bisterne Scarecrow festival to the very state of the art Red Arrows display at the Bournemouth Air Show - both in August and both not to be missed! We normally cycle to both which is a great opportunity to also enjoy the beautiful countryside around Ringwood and in the Avon Valley. And all three are completely free which must be a bonus!
with best wishes,
You’ll find many more local events on our What’s On pages 28 & 30 or website something for everyone in fact! Also in this issue we have the final part of a 2 part feature on the Town Hall/Old Cinema in the Market Place which hopefully may yet see a new lease of life at some time in the future. It would certainly give the Market Place a huge lift so fingers crossed! Mike Wattam has been muttering yet again, this time about driving licences, plus we have all the usual articles - Viewed From My Window, Mikes Motors, Blashford Bulletin, etc. And finally don’t forget to look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 50 for all your local trades, to save yourself time, fuel and most importantly - money!

ROUNDABOUT
ROUNDABOUT RINGWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE & SURROUNDING VILLAGES
NOW and THEN
Town Hall/Old Cinema, Market Place. (Part 2)
T
he big change came in 1937, when the building was drastically modernised by cinema architect Ernest S. Roberts. The owners were by then A. Austin Pilkington’s Theatres, with Barrington Lynham remaining as manager. The steep mansard roof, the balcony and the original entrance were all done away with. The interior was gutted and a circle seating area was created giving the Ringwood audiences a plush new auditorium. The cinema also acquired a new name, the Regal, and it is this cinema which is still fondly remembered by many Ringwood people today. The photograph showing the Regal in 1960 comes from local cinema enthusiast, Phil Wills. 1960
March 2015
The Regal was also the home of Ringwood Musical & Dramatic Society for many of their performances. Other live concerts were held there, notably Status Quo in 1969. However, declining numbers finally spelt out the end of the cinema, which closed about 1972. There followed a move to acquire the Regal for the town, which led to a public vote. With hindsight it seems a pity this proposition was defeated, as other towns in the neighbourhood such as Wimborne and Christchurch managed to retain their cinemas/theatres with great support from their residents. Instead the Regal was turned into an arcade of small shops on the ground floor with a squash club above and an Italian restaurant in the semi-basement below. The arcade was never really
a success and in about 1990 the building was turned into a night-club, initially named Route 42 and subsequently by various other titles. A couple of shops at the front and the restaurant were retained. During Late 1970’s the early 21st century the entire premises were bought by the owners of the Furlong Centre who had plans to restore its Town Hall exterior and create retail space on the ground floor with residential accommodation above. However legal wrangling and the recession delayed these plans being put into practice. The property became very rundown with scaffolding holding up the crumbling facade. A couple of years ago the scaffolding was removed and the building given a slight spruce-up, but it still presents a sorry sight, especially compared to its past glories. Over the years and up to the present day many different attempts have been made to revive the cinema, without success. Now in June 2015 Development Securities, the owners of the Furlong Centre, have come up with new proposals which again include the restoration of the old building back to more like its Victorian Town Hall appearance. What the July 2015 outcome will be is not yet clear but let’s hope the building will soon once more stand out as one of Ringwood’s most prestigious properties and not as its biggest eyesore!

Tropical Paradise by Pippa Greenwood
A
s the summer’s end is not too far away, many of us will be wishing for that exotic holiday we never quite had. But you can recreate that Typically Tropical Feel in your own garden instead. The temperatures may not be quite what they might be on a real exotic holiday, but it’ll certainly help to make your garden feel warmer and more appealing, and you can be sure that it’ll last a lot longer than the classic two week long trip. A tropical oasis might be particularly well suited to an urban garden, where temperatures are often warmer and conditions more sheltered and protected, but even if your garden gets its fair share of frosts you can still make an impact using a mixture of tender and hardy plants all of which have that exotic feel to them. Plant closely or fill ‘gaps’ with temporary plantings of the less hardy tropical look plants and you will create that dense, lush looks which spells tropical paradise. Lush, large leaves will always help to create a rainforest or exotic atmosphere and you could even grow a miniature banana called Musa ‘Basjoo’, which shows a good degree of hardiness. Indian shot plants, also known as the cannas are great and fast growing too. For very bold, colourfully striped foliage and screaming orange flowers try Canna ‘Tropicana’, or for a larger than life effect try the banana Ensetes ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ which grows very
fast and has wonderfully rich purple-green leaves.
commonly known as the cup and saucer plant.
If you want more than just foliage, the bulbous Eucomis bicolour has out-of-this world greenish yellow flowerheads which give it the common name of ‘pineapple plant’. Another favourite of mine is the Angel’s trumpet. These gorgeous looking plants may be very poisonous but the flowers of Brugmansia (previously known as Datura) as angel’s trumpet is also known, take some beating – choose white, yellow or cream and enjoy their perfume and elegant good looks. Although not hardy if you grow it in a pot it can be kept in the garden during all but the worst weather and then brought out again once it has started to warm up the following spring.
Then add to the ‘action’ using a few dramatic features – perhaps a Trachycarpus fortunei palm in open ground or a pot, or in the form of a sculpture or statue. If you go to the garden centre, many statues and garden ornaments are much more affordable than you might think. Partially hidden with some lush foliage they help to add to the junglelike atmosphere.
Don’t forget the vertical surfaces such as trellis, walls and fences as they too can be given a floral and foliage makeover. These may look boring now, but will look great when covered with passion flowers, ornamental vines or the pretty Cobea scandens
There are plenty of tropicaleffect plants to choose from including: tree ferns, phoenix palms, yuccas, cordylines, Rodgersia pinnata, Gunnera manicata, Rheum palmatum, cycads, citrus (including lemons, calamondin orange and other fruiting varieties) and bamboos. So, you see, the potential is there to create a holiday paradise without having to leave home, brave delays at the airport, find a house or pet-sitter…..all you need now is a deck chair and a cocktail or two, delivered on a tray!

Local students travel with Lions Club International
E
ight local students were carefully selected by Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club to become this year’s international young ambassadors, representing the towns of Ringwood and Fordingbridge at international youth camps organised by Lions around the world. Pictured are Charlotte Boyd who went to Hawaii, Scarlett Smith who travelled to Finland, Jamie Hiles who visited Italy, Callum Salisbury who explored Denmark, and Andrew Goldsmith who discovered the sights and culture of Israel. In addition William Futcher travelled to Sweden, James Twomey went to Canada and Gina Robinson went to Italy. Each student will experience the trip of a lifetime spending part of their time (up to 3 weeks) with students their own age from countries around the world at an International Youth Camp run by Lions Clubs in that country and
spending up to a further 2 weeks staying with a host family in that country to find out what it is like to live there. Once at their destination the food, travel, and accommodation will be paid for by Lions Clubs and more often that not there are no additional camp costs. One of the principal aims of Lions Clubs International is to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world. This is in part achieved through supporting local applications for their Youth Camp & Exchange Program which has been in operation since 1961. The 2016 scheme is open to anyone resident in Ringwood and/ or Fordingbridge and who will be aged between 17 and 21 by July 2016. Anyone interested in this program for 2016 should call R & F Lions on 0845 833 5819 or contact them through their website: www.randflions.org.uk
Angels appear at TOOL AID RINGWOOD!
T
wo years ago we had to find new premises, as those generously provided rent free by Raymond Brown Construction Ltd were to be sold. Faced with paying rent for the first time, we had to find a new workshop and the funds to help pay for it. We had 13 responses from ‘Angels’ in the local community, who came forward with offers of financial support, sufficient to cover our lease for three years and the set up costs in new premises at Forest Corner Farm near Ringwood. The photo shows our ‘angels’ at our workshop on 8th July where we showed them round, brought them up to speed with current
developments and outlined our hopes for the future. If you have old tools, flat screen computers, sewing machines, bicycles, knitting machines, or any other items that might be refurbished and help somebody to a better life in the poorer parts of the world, we would be interested to hear from you. Old and faulty items are welcome, or even old wiring, as much of our income comes from recovering saleable scrap rather than it going to landfill. We also welcome volunteers who can spare a few hours per week. Contact our President, Laurie Dormer on 01425 475440.

T he Blashford Bulletin Things to look out for in the coming months at the Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve, Ibsley. Black Arches Female by Bob Chapman
Kingfisher

by D. Hawkins

Common Blue Damsel Fly - by Windust
A
s August arrives, the trees at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve are laden with leaves. As the grass in the meadow begins to die back, some flowers including heather, fleabane and hemp agrimony are only just beginning to come out whilst blackberries and other berries will be ripening – there will be plenty of food around for our insects, birds and mammals. On a sunny day make the most of the summer and search for butterflies, including comma, green-veined white, painted lady, gatekeeper, peacock, red admiral and brimstone. Dragonflies and damselflies abound, with southern and migrant hawkers patrolling their feeding grounds and gatherings of common blue damselflies creating a dazzling haze over the edges of Ivy Lake. The light trap will be attracting a plethora of moths, for example angle shades, black arches and red underwing, especially if the nights are cloudy and warm. For your own glimpse of these and other creatures of the night, including bats, join us for a walk on the wild side on Friday 21st August from 8.15pm until 9.45pm as we head out onto the reserve after dusk. Please

telephone 01425 472760 to book your place. For our birds, August is a time to either moult and grow new feathers after the wear and tear suffered during the breeding season, or think about moving on. If you look to the skies, you may catch a glimpse of an osprey flying over en-route to Africa, along with other migrants. As September approaches swallows, martins and swifts will all begin to head towards their African wintering grounds and you may catch them feeding up over Ibsley Water in preparation for their long journey. Often the adults leave before the chicks, leaving them unsupervised to find their own way south. As some birds leave, others are beginning to arrive including the great white egret who spends the autumn and winter with us after a spring and summer in France. Duck numbers too begin to build up, with mallard, teal, wigeon, gadwall, tufted duck and shoveler all beginning to appear. It can be quite difficult at this time of year to tell who’s who, as they too will have moulted and the
usually more distinctive drakes will have opted for a drab plumage, not too dissimilar to the females. Known as ‘eclipse plummage’, this period lasts about a month to six weeks: as they grow their new feathers they are temporarily flightless, so it pays to be inconspicuous! The ducks are often joined by returning black headed gulls, who are now losing their chocolate brown, rather than black, hoods. As summer turns, watch out for this year’s fledglings including the kingfisher, as they leave the nest for good and begin to disperse through the reserve. Now is the best time to catch a glimpse of one, with Goosander hide and the Ivy Lake hides all good spots to sit and wait for their brilliant blue flash. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

e know how devastated we can all be over the loss of a much loved pet, be it cat or dog, and for children even a goldfish or guinea pig will be an experience they have to learn to deal with. We pour our heart and soul into their care and feel their loss terribly. With so many losses over the years we have had to come to terms with the fact that they cannot live forever however much care we give them and our little graveyard is now full and we have had to start another one. We recently lost our Mr Tom to the road. He had started to wander off on his own away from his friends, for what reason I do not know. He had also become rather deaf and it took patience to attract his attention, even for food. We were very saddened to lose him and especially as this was the first time it was known to us that he had gone outside the gates. Why had he done this? He had so many fields to wander through, why go to the road? The thought Mr Tom that he may not have been aware of the traffic as he was so hard of hearing made it especially traumatic. Since coming to us in a desperate state of need, he had made friends with Jasper, and when Mr Oscar and Sophie (Mrs Oscar) joined them, they made a foursome, a united team, a pussy-cat version of ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ spending their days wandering through the field garden, hunting, lazing in the sun, just being together. Sadly Sophie had to be put to sleep when we found she had cancer of the tongue, but at that time Mr Oscar had his two other friends to comfort him and they cuddled up together which helped them all come to terms with their loss.
This time it was different. The loss of Mr Tom had been felt by Mr Oscar and Jasper as a big loss and we saw them searching and searching for their friend. They looked tired and forlorn, they showed their grief, they were really lost without him. Somehow it has made such a difference to them that even they no longer spend as much time together. Jasper desperately needed someone to cuddle up to as he did with his dear friend Mr Tom, but Mr Oscar was so sad he just wanted to be left alone. Fortunately Freda has tried to pal up with Jasper and we have found them sleeping together, but she is young and likes to live an active life in the daytime and is not the lounging around type, so during the day Jasper tries to find Mr Oscar so that he can be somewhere near him, if not as yet allowed too close. Cats do have feelings, they will grieve for their friend so help them through their grief with love and attention and perhaps find them another companion to help fill the gap. We were just coming to terms with the loss of Boy George and Mr Tom when Pee-Wee was also lost in a tragic accident. Three in a row! There is nothing we can do but concentrate on the living and give them all the love and care we can. The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £12.50 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on 01202 826244. All proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

DS 3
The motive power was a very quiet and powerful Peugeot 150bhp diesel complying with Euro 6 (no nasty soot emitted) which when mated to a 6-speed gearbox showed some promise to fly while sipping the amber nectar very slowly.
Initial impressions done with and my tick-list looking rather ragged, it was time to press the loud pedal. That worked. Supremely able to amble along following Mr Plod, the loud pedal could easily change the scenery rapidly and excellent brakes meant the hedges you guessed could shortly be your resting place, just slipped by. That is, if you are on a smooth road which of course doesn’t exist in England. Any temptation to rush along was tempered by the thought that the non-compliant tyres and suspension could push your head straight through the roof, given half a chance. Personally, I believe the chunky styling to be unattractive, although I may well be in the minority - this is a popular car so perhaps the styling is considered to be merely gauche. It has no similarity at all with the old Citroen DS/ID series which remains a brilliant style icon in automotive, artistic and fashion circles. In summary then, this was a quick car, given the billiardtable roads. The smallish size and manoeuvrability meant urban travel was this car’s strongest suit. The low starting price, excellent fuel consumption and meagre road tax endow this car with a financially strong argument, and if things like DAB radio are a requirement, then they can be added at extra cost. Would I put one on my drive? There wouldn’t be room behind the infinitely more versatile Peugeot 208GTi.
Mike's Motors
Still awake? Well, I duly got a DS-3 to test. This car is very popular among the fashionistas, a small 3-door hatch with somewhat avant-garde styling. Mine was in a pearlescent white with a glossy navy blue roof and very comfy off-black leather sports seats. Huge wheels and rubber-band tyres
conveyed that “looks good, goes fast” aggressive look. A panoramic glass roof allows you to study the raindrops falling on your car. In my car I deemed the accoutrements inadequate. Despite a modern iPad-mimicking screen display, it wasn’t touch sensitive, the radio equipment only did FM while a DAB radio tuner was omitted, tut-tut. Then there was no Sat-nav. It did however have Bluetooth for hands-free mobile phone and other inputs such as iPhone, iPad, iDyson (if you can ever get ANY iDevice to pair with any noniDevice) so in this area it was definitely a ‘work in progress’. Hopefully.

Y
ou may well be forgiven for not knowing what a ‘DS-3’ is. In the very recent past, the Peugeot group was running ‘in the red’ and as part of a re-funding exercise hired a new chairman, one Carlos Tavares. Pondering the fortunes of both Citroen and Peugeot, he decided that the sporty models in the Citroen range – currently known as DS-3, DS-4 and DS-5 – would have better fortunes as a stand-alone brand, to be known as ‘DS’. The thought is that the Citroen DS of 50 years ago is so iconic, everybody will remember, reminisce and charge out to buy a new DS. I wouldn’t have advised this rebranding silliness myself, just try explaining to your friends that you have a ‘DS’ - sounds like a congenital disease to me but never mind. Will your friends understand, or back off discretely, never to be seen again?

Beauty Look Younger for Longer - Look after Your Neck and Hands When it comes to looking younger, we all seem to focus our attention on our face yet overlook our neck and hands, even though it’s these areas that tend to age the fastest. So it’s time to start taking notice of these neglected areas to ensure that you look younger for longer. Your Neck
The skin on your neck is thin compared to the rest of the body, it also has fewer oil glands and can easily become dehydrated. So given that, it’s as important to moisturise your neck as your face, and to extend the application of your daily sunscreen to this area too.
Remember to exfoliate your skin regularly - both on your face and neck - as this removes dead skin cells, brightens your skin and improves absorption of your moisturiser. On the subject of daily routines, whilst a regular moisturiser is fine for those looking to prevent rather than cure, if your neck is already heavily lined, you’ll need something stronger. Furthermore your neck requires a different formulation to reverse the signs of ageing than your face, so it’s important to use products specifically designed for the neck, which are generally more concentrated and powerful. Eating a healthy diet is key to looking younger too, as foods rich in anti-oxidants and Omega-3 acids have been shown to help skin rejuvenation by boosting collagen production something that declines as we age. Smoking is not only bad for your health, but it damages collagen and the constant squinting and lip pursing whilst smoking causes lines to form quickly. It’s no surprise then, that the delicate skin under your chin is damaged as a result.
Your Hands
They say that you can tell a women’s age by her hands, so it really is important to look after yours. Dry weather, central heating, contact with water and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers all serve to dry out the skin, making your hands look older than they are and
feel rough to the touch. If the skin on your hands is suffering you can be sure that your nails will be too. Nails need extra attention especially during the winter months and if they are dry, peeling and brittle this is a sign that you need to treat your talons to some serious TLC. Limit the exposure your hands and nails have to the elements by always wearing gloves whenever you step outside in cold weather. The same goes for washing up or any activity where your hands are submerged in water; always keep a pair of rubber gloves nearby. Invest in a pair of moisture gloves. Apply an intensive hand cream every night, before bed, and then put the moisture gloves on overnight. You’ll wake up with beautifully soft hands in the morning. Each time you wash your hands, dry them thoroughly and then apply a hand and nail cream - same goes for when you have used a hand sanitizer. Make sure you rub the product in thoroughly and don’t forget to coat your cuticles and nails too. Keep your nails long and strong by applying cuticle oil every night. Use a strengthening treatment to help protect your nails from the elements and to give them extra strength. And for a real treat, head to the beauty salon and get a manicure. You’ll feel a lot more enthused about keeping your professionally pampered hands in tip-top condition when they’re looking gorgeous. By Helen Taylor

Bhutan Taktsang, the Tiger’s Lair By Solange Hando
L
ong ago, they say, a holy man named Guru Rinpoche flew from the East on the back of a tigress to bring Buddhism to Bhutan. He landed high above the Paro valley on a vertiginous ledge where hermits soon followed to meditate in the caves. Taktsang, ‘the Tiger’s Lair’ is the most sacred place in this small Himalayan kingdom, claiming myriad shrines on the slopes and a monastery built on the very ledge where the Guru landed. Damaged by fire in the late 90s, Bhutan’s most iconic landmark was restored by the finest artists and welcomes visitors, pilgrims and monks who might choose to meditate for up to seven years in the most remote building. Glinting in sunlight or draped in shifting mist, Taktsang defies imagination, seemingly inaccessible as it clings precariously to the cliff face, hanging some 800 metres above the valley floor. Yet, it can be reached on a scenic three hour trek, starting in a riverside meadow garlanded in prayer flags. Soon the trail enters a forest of blue pines, rhododendrons and oak where wild primula
and orchids line the path and lichen hangs from the trees like ghostly cobwebs. Sometimes you come across a makeshift stall with a colourful display of turquoise and coral beads, gleaming among human skulls polished for ritual offerings. A child beckons, a woman smiles but all is quiet except for bird song and the occasional tinkling of bells as ponies carry the less able to the half way point. Up there, by a log cabin framed in marigolds, Taktsang appears even more out of reach across a fathomless ravine, but there are great views of the valley with its golden paddies, meandering river and traditional houses festooned in auspicious signs and beautifully carved eaves. At nearly 3000 metres, the air is fresh and Buddhist flags flutter in the breeze to send prayers in all directions. Beyond the cabin, the path climbs relentlessly above the tree line, past holy rocks and glistening shrines, mysterious footprints, gurgling springs and rows of tiny urns containing ashes of the dead, placed here to ensure a peaceful after-life. Just like the altitude, the scenery takes
your breath away, from the mountain tops drifting in and out of the mist to the forest tumbling down to the valley in every shade of green. One final bend and you are faced by hundreds of steps staggering down to a wooden bridge to cross a sacred waterfall, then it’s up on the other side to the entrance gate, at last. Now, vertigo might strike at any moment for there is little room on the ledge where white walls and red and gold pagoda roofs jostle for space right against the rock, on the very edge of the precipice. Narrow rickety bridges, steps and mini-terraces lead from one temple to the next, with yet more dizzying views of the Paro valley. Inside every temple are murals of gurus and gods, gilded statues and offerings of fruit, flowers and colourful butter sculptures. Pilgrims prostrate and peep into the Guru’s cave, open only once a year, and now and then the chanting of monks echoes in the semi-darkness, punctuated by cymbals and gongs. Oil lamps flicker and the fragrance of incense rises all around. It’s eerie, inspiring and worth every challenging step along the way.

Solamagic are German market leaders largely because of their quality, innovation and diverse product range and they are ever evolving. So ‘Why the name’? At Solablaze whilst our range bears no relationship whatsoever to Solar powered products, the word “Sola” is however very important to us as our products are associated with the sun. Tech It With You The best gadgets to take travelling
I
t’s that time of year again: time to jump in trains, planes or aeroplanes to head for some much needed rest and relaxation. Whether it’s keeping the kids entertained, getting a beach party started or helping you catch up on your reading list, tech will be an essential companion. For most of us, the worst bit of any holiday is all the hanging around - especially if there are children to amuse in the fun-free environs of an airport. We’ve found Apple’s iPad Mini a real godsend in such circumstances, as it can be filled with a mix of games, movies, ebooks and apps to keep children of all ages amused. We’d strongly recommend a set of headphones and a sturdy protective case, though: the only thing louder than some kid’s apps is the noise we make when we see the iPad dropped onto a concrete floor. If you’re travelling with older children, especially in the UK, a portable Wi-Fi hotspot can be really handy -. Three’s MiFi (£29.99) creates a wireless network in your car, on a train, in a caravan or anywhere else the device can get a mobile data signal, and as it’s a pay
Three UK MiFi mobile wireless hotspot
as you go device you needn’t worry about running up big bills. You can take the MiFi abroad, too, so for example
Three offers support in some 138 countries, but check the prices carefully: mobile data in some countries can be very expensive. For your own amusement we can’t praise Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader highly enough: over the years it’s got better and sharper while the price has plummeted. The cheapest one is now just £59 and has a battery that’s likely to last longer than your holiday. If magazines are more your thing, a tablet or laptop running the excellent Readly service (£9.99) per month gives you access to stacks of really good magazines that you can Readly mobile magazine app
download before you travel. And don’t forget audiobooks, such as the extensive selection available for almost any device at Audible.com. You’ll find noise cancelling headphones make air travel much more bearable, even if you don’t listen to anything: they get rid of most extraneous noise, and they’re particularly good on anything with a low background hum. For when you do want noise, though, we’d recommend a portable speaker. There are all kinds of powerful Bluetooth speakers for smartphones and tablets, but we’re quite taken with the £12 X-Mini 2: it’s tiny, delivers decent enough sound for a barbecue and runs for ages without needing new batteries. Pricier
speakers may offer better sound, but they weigh and cost a lot more too.
X-Mini II mobile speaker;
The single best gadget you can take travelling, though, is a smartphone. You don’t need an expensive one to benefit from them: Google’s excellent Translate app breaks down language barriers on the cheapest phones, while Nokia’s HERE maps don’t need a data connection to give you GPS sat-nav when you’re abroad. When you consider all the various things a phone can do - mapping, online banking, flight checking, emergency calling, researching potential destinations, playing music, taking photos, recording video and much, much more - a good smartphone is a must-have travel accessory. If you’re on a tight budget you can pick up a good Android phone such as a Motorola E or G for less than £100. It’s money well spent. Just don’t forget to pack the charger!

Portrait of a Local Artist “I like to travel the world to look at wildlife but I usually find the nicest scenes on my local door step – in Wiltshire or Dorset.”
‘Mothercare’ by Tanya Lock
Says Tanya Lock, who regularly walks along the river at Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, to look at the local bird life. Here she spotted a Moorhen busy feeding her young. It was such a lovely scene that Tanya decided to paint it. Once the painting was finished she entered it into the world renowned Birds in Art exhibition in the USA. Not only was it selected for the 2014 exhibition but Tanya’s painting was chosen to be one of the few to go on the US tour. “So between now and 2016 a small snippet of Wiltshire will be viewed in different states of America including: California, Texas, New York, Oklanhoma,” says Tanya. “The best part about this tour for me is that the painting is going to Oklahoma. When I painted this I was listening to the audio book of ‘The Grapes of Wrath’, a sad story about a family from Oklahoma. In the end the family gets caught in a flood and the baby dies. At this point I started to cry because the same thing happened to this little Moorhen family from Bradford-on-Avon. The day after I saw this happy little scene they were washed away in one of the summer floods of 2012 - so it’s a very sad painting.” Tanya has painted many scenes she has spotted along the river and a number of these have either won sections or been commended in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competitions, or made it to the finals of the David Shepherd Wildlife artist of the year and exhibited in The Mall Galleries, London. Tanya was one of the finalists in the recent International Artist global competition with her painting of a Manatee. www.tanyalock.com

egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.
If you are not helped by the traditional answers about community, compassion, and what life’s all about, perhaps you instead need to find people who keep playing with and celebrating the questions.

Hobbies Are you Birding, Twitching or Watching? By Kate McLelland
I
n the late 1980s the arrival of a tiny American songbird (blown off course during its annual migration) in Larkfield, Kent, led to a massmobilisation of the nation’s bird lovers. Over the course of several days 2500 “twitchers” crowded into the small Tesco car park that the goldenwinged warbler had chosen as its temporary home. In the 1980s a twitcher (the term for someone who is willing to travel many miles in order to see a rare bird at first hand) would need to rely on radio or TV reports, or home phone calls from fellow enthusiasts, in order to learn about a rare bird’s visit. Now, thanks to mobile communication, the news can be spread within seconds of the first sighting. Just this year 500 people appeared on a Norfolk beach in a matter of hours after a rare citril finch normally only found in alpine areas of Europe – was first observed. Such devotion to searching out rare sightings means that twitchers often find themselves in the media spotlight, but not all bird hobbyists are twitchers. Twitching is just one aspect of a pastime that’s surprisingly broad and diverse, with activities ranging from a single individual recording birds in their local
area (usually defined as a “bird-watcher”) to members of well organised groups who come together to learn everything they can about bird species, including their nesting habits, environmental usage and migration patterns. These serious hobbyists are known as “birders” and some even travel the world, taking part in competitive events. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is the UK’s leading bird charity and it has done much to protect endangered species and promote bird welfare. The society’s “Big Garden Birdwatch”, which started over 36 years ago, has become an important annual event across the country: encouraging householders to contribute to research so the RSPB can record changes in bird populations. You can sign up for the Big Garden Birdwatch by going to the RSPB website (www.rspb.org.uk). Alternatively you may prefer to join one of the society’s local groups (enter a search for “Local Groups” on their website to find an A-Z list). Run by volunteers, these groups provide an opportunity for members to learn more about birds and wildlife and take part in talks, walks and fundraising events.
Birding UK (www.birding.uk.com) also provides information on a range of groups you can join, including “Birding Buddies”, “Bird Photographers”, “Bird Artists” and even “Birding Bikers”. If you’re just getting started as a bird-watcher you’ll find a range of mobile phone apps to help you identify birds and record sightings. Ranging in price from 69p to £12.99, some even provide examples of birdsong to help with identification but care should be taken when playing recorded birdsong in the natural environment, particularly at times when birds are nesting. Whether you’re a simple “bird-watcher” or a dedicated “birder” or “twitcher” you can be confident that you’ve chosen a hobby that will always offer interest, excitement and fresh challenges. As climate change continues to affect the natural environment - altering breeding and migration patterns - it’s good to know that keen observers are continually monitoring the nation’s birds, recording and passing on vital information that will help preserve these precious populations well into the future.

Cake and Bake Fruit Tiramisu This is a simpler version of the classic Italian dessert with layers of rich mascarpone cream, coffee soaked sponge fingers, chocolate and fresh fruit. For individual puds, cut the sponge fingers in half and use 6 small ramekin dishes or glass tumblers.
Ingredients: • 120ml cold strong black coffee • 3tbsp coffee liqueur such as Tia Maria • 14 sponge fingers • 500g mascarpone cheese • 75g caster sugar • 75ml Marsala • 300ml double cream • 75g dark chocolate, grated • 175g strawberries, hulled and halved • 175g fresh raspberries
Serves 6 Ready in 30 mins, plus chilling
1. Mix together the black coffee and coffee liqueur in a shallow dish. Dip half the sponge fingers in the coffee mixture and arrange in the base of a glass serving bowl. 2. Place the mascarpone cheese and sugar in a large bowl and, using a wooden spoon, beat together until smooth and creamy. Gradually beat in the Marsala and the double cream. 3. Spread about one third of the mascarpone mixture over the sponge fingers in the serving bowl. Scatter over half the grated chocolate and most of the strawberries and raspberries. Reserve the rest of the fruit in the fridge for decoration. 4. Dip the remaining sponge fingers in the rest of the coffee mixture and arrange on top of the fruit, pressing down gently. Spoon over the remaining cream mixture and use a spatula to gently level the surface. Top with the remaining grated chocolate. 5. Cover the dish with cling film and chill for at least 3-4 hours (or overnight). To serve, remove the tiramisu from the fridge and leave to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Uncover and decorate with the reserved fruit.
TIP
You can vary the fruit depending on what is available at the time – try pitted fresh or canned cherries, orange segments or blueberries.
