Dear Readers,

he Dorset coast always has been a very popular holiday destination for many and it’s one of my favourite places for a bracing cliff walk since Ringwood is so near. Around three quarters of an hour to an hour’s drive if you know how to avoid the A31! We even cycled there and back last year although it did take a little longer! It’s also a popular location for artists like our Local Artist Dick Hewitson featured on page 44 who creates rather interesting abstract paintings of the Jurassic Coast. This part of the country is also superb for fossil hunters and page 34 tells us all about fossils and fossil hunters. One such part time collector who was originally a plumber and started collecting in the 1980’s

with best wishes,

was Steve Etches. You have probably heard of The Etches Collection based in Kimmeridge - well worth a visit! The finale to this year’s calendar of events in Ringwood is the ever popular Carnival which will be on September 16th. Our cover features one of the many slightly questionable entries! But it’s all for very good causes so perfectly acceptable and a lot of fun! The weather has been kind over the past few years so there’s no reason to expect anything less! Finally if you need a job done or want to treat yourself or a loved one AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 54 and save yourself time, fuel and most importantly - money!

ROUNDABOUT RINGWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE & SURROUNDING VILLAGES

NOW and THEN

L

W. A. Ghrimes, 3-5 High Street, Ringwood.

ong before the furniture shop in the Furlong Centre was built, W.A.Ghrimes Ltd was once the place where Ringwood folk went to furnish their homes. The first record of the Ghrimes family in Ringwood is the 1841 census which shows William Thomas Ghrimes, an upholsterer’s assistant aged about 25, living with his widowed mother. He was born in Lymington, the son of an exciseman, and probably came to Ringwood as an apprentice. By 1855 he was married with a young family and had established his own upholstery business on the south side of the High Street, in the tall three storey house shown on the right of the c1900 photograph. The lower buildings shown on the left of the old photograph were two separate little shops. Early in the 20th century the shop on the extreme left was demolished and a new three storey shop built in its place, shown in the 1960 photograph as Goddens family butcher. After William Thomas Ghrimes’ death in 1875 his widow Fanny continued the cabinetmaking and upholstery business until her son William Alexander took over. The business prospered and eventually expanded into the remaining little shop next door. For the first 1960’s

half of the 20th century it was still owned by the Ghrimes family, but in 1946 the company was sold to Frank Trimmer, though the name W.A.Ghrimes Ltd was retained. By this time the business covered every kind of furnishing for the home, as well as furniture removals and storage, as shown in the 1960s photograph taken by Ted Baker above.

c1900

Loose covers, carpets and curtains were made to order. As Mr Trimmer grew older, more responsibility was taken on by his company director Brian Peck and Brian’s wife Joan, who acted as company secretary for more than 25 years. Together the couple were very well known in the town as they took an active interest in the community. July 2017 In 1985 the business finally closed on Brian Peck’s retirement due to ill health and concern about the increasing competition from the new furniture superstores. Soon afterwards the entire shop was demolished and replaced by a new development called Friday’s Court. Until recently the two new shops facing the High Street were Fields jewellers and Forest sportswear but these have now closed. Balloonarray has taken the left hand shop and the other is vacant at the time of writing. The tall shop on the far left is now RSPCA Ashley Heath Animal Centre charity shop.

Children’s Parties

OutdOOr parties Most kids love a treasure hunt, and it ties in well with a pirate, knights or princess party. You could leave a series of clues leading to one big stash of small prizes to split (chocolate coins tend to go down well). Or you could hide sweets, trinkets and other mini prizes around the garden. Just make sure you keep a few extras to hand, to avoid any tears. Once they’ve found the treasure, you could: • Have a water pistol fight. • Challenge the kids to an obstacle course. • Hold a mini-Olympics, complete with ‘real’ medals. • Set up a tin can alley, or a game of skittles. parties fOr craftlOving children If your child loves nothing more than creating a new work of art, why not dedicate the party to ‘making stuff’? Depending on the age of the children, you could: • Make masks out of paper plates, feathers, stickers, glitter and so on. • Paint pots or trinket boxes. • Decorate plates or mugs with porcelain pens. • Raid the recycling box to make robots, spaceships or monsters.

Make sure you tell parents that the children will need old clothes or painting aprons. And bear in mind that paint may not have dried by the time the party finishes, so you’ll have to deliver the artwork at a later date. parties fOr preteens Pre-teens may prefer to head out somewhere with a couple of friends. If they do want a party though, you could: • Host a sleepover, complete with movie, popcorn and a chocolate fountain. • Hold a fashion show. Just raid some charity shops and let kids loose on the clothes with fabric pens, glitter and badges. • Have a disco party, with glow sticks, a glitter ball and a dance-off. parties that let yOu take it easy If this all sounds like a bit too much work, you could turn to the professionals. From hiring a children’s entertainer to heading to a soft-play centre, there are plenty of options to choose from. And they’re often not as expensive as you might think. Some companies offer a full package including entertainment, food and a party bag, which can actually

work out around the same price as you’d pay to buy it all yourself. Alternatively, you could let your child choose two or three friends to take out for the day. Head to the zoo, trampoline park, cinema, theme park, or just out for a picnic. tOp tips fOr a successful party: • Don’t invite too many people. A good rule of thumb is to only invite one or two more than the age of your child. So if your son is turning five, you might want to invite six or seven children. However, it is a very rough guide, as all children are different. • Consider how many children there are in the class or friendship group. Inviting 12 of the 14 girls in your daughter’s class could cause a lot of upset. • Don’t overwhelm your child. Younger children may struggle with lots of excited guests, loud music and bright lights. Try to create a safe, quiet space where they can retreat if they need to. • Don’t feel you have to spend a fortune. Often the simpler, cheaper parties are the ones that children love the best. • Rope in as many helpers as you can!

Ringwood School students generate £600 for local charities and school groups

n Thursday 29th June, Ringwood School and Sixth Form students presented cheques totalling an impressive £600 to local charities and school groups as part of the annual ‘Lion’s Den’ event hosted by Ringwood and Fordingbridge Lion’s Club. Lion’s Den is based on the Dragon’s Den TV series where student entrepreneurs pitch for investment from successful local business icons. Ringwood School and Burgate School students had the chance to bid for a share of £1,600 to go to the following; a local charity, an individual in need, a community or school project or an environmental project that they are passionate about helping. The formal presentations took place at Burgate School and Sixth Form on 22nd March.

to help the group members re-build selfconfidence and improve communication skills. The third group of students pitched for funds for Ringwood Foodbank and received a £100 donation. The final and fourth group were a group of Sixth Form students representing the recently appointed Student Voice Leadership Team. They pitched for monies to set up a new Student Leadership Hardship Fund to support disadvantaged students across the school and received a sum of £200. Olivia Burgess, a Year 8 student commented: “Taking part in the Lion’s Den has been an incredible experience. Our chosen charity was the Ringwood Foodbank. We love to be involved in the local community and this incredible charity is such a vital part of the

Four teams from Ringwood School pitched to a panel of judges for a sum of money to support their chosen charity or group. All four teams were successful in winning various sums of money. The first group to present were a team of students representing Ringwood School’s ‘Grow your Own’ Sustainability Group who received £100 towards new equipment and tools. The second group from Ringwood School represented the Ringwood Speak Ability Group, a local speech group for people who are recovering from a stroke. They received £200 to purchase new games and equipment

community. The Lion’s kindly donated £100 to us. It was a truly wonderful evening which we all enjoyed”. Nicola Watson, Life Choices Co-ordinator at Ringwood School commented: “I am extremely proud of how well all four Ringwood School teams have done in achieving sums of monies for their various chosen charities and school clubs. To present to a panel of judges can be a daunting task yet all of the teams showed incredible passion and determination throughout the whole process. Thank you also to Ringwood and Fordingbridge Lion’s Club for giving our students this fantastic opportunity”.

s August arrives, the trees at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve are laden with leaves. As the grass in the meadow begins to die back, some flowers including heather, fleabane and hemp agrimony are only just beginning to come out whilst blackberries and other berries will be ripening – there will be plenty of food around for our insects, birds and mammals. On a sunny day take time to search for butterflies including brimstone, peacock, red admiral, small white, large white, green-veined white, silverwashed fritillary, painted lady, gatekeeper, small tortoiseshell and comma. Dragonflies will also be out patrolling their feeding grounds including southern and migrant hawkers. On Monday 7th August join Reserves Officer Bob Chapman on a guided walk from 2pm until 4pm in search of summer invertebrates. To book your place telephone 01425 472760. As summer continues it’s

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. www.hiwwt.org.uk

time to look to the skies over Blashford in search of passing migrants. Birds like osprey will be making their way back to Africa whilst our hirundines will be gathering to feed over Ibsley Water before they too head south. A good time to look for this feeding frenzy of swallows, swifts and martins is just after rain, which seems to bring the insects down over the water with the birds not far behind. As some birds leave others are starting to arrive. The great white egret is likely to return any day now from its holidays in France to spend the autumn and winter with us. Duck numbers are also starting to build up with representatives of several species including gadwall, tufted duck, wigeon, mallard and shoveler out on the water. As usual at this time of year it can be quite difficult to sort many of them out as the usually distinctive drakes have moulted into a somewhat drab ‘eclipse’ plumage, similar to the females. This is thought to be a survival mechanism, making them less conspicuous

whilst they moult their flight feathers and are unprotected from predators. Late summer is a great time to be keeping a watchful eye out for this year’s fledglings. Kingfisher in particular will be starting to disperse themselves throughout the reserve, giving you the best chance of seeing one; either a flash of bright blue or if you are lucky enough they may choose to settle on one of the many perches outside the front of Goosander or the Ivy Lake hides. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www.hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

Viewed From My W indow A small selection of short stories written by Patricia Oliver from Horton near Wimborne, describing the ups and downs of caring for feral cats over the years with photos by J Santana-Martin.

D

Ginger - part 1

id he fall or was this a risky jump for freedom? It was a long way down from the window of a first floor flat where this cat lived. He had never been outside the flat in all his life and would not have known how to find his way back. Six weeks later he was found hiding under a hedge looking forlorn, thin and a little scared, thankfully uninjured, Time passed and he was now seven years old, but his owner had felt since his leap from the window that he was a cat that needed a better life and more freedom than she was able to give him so asked me if I would take him in. With so many cats to look after and with age creeping up fast I was concerned and a little bit reluctant to take on a domestic cat that did have a home already. However I was concerned that he did not have the freedom he craved and seemed to live such a boring life cooped up all day, when he could be outside exploring, hunting rodents, nesting in the long grass, running, meeting other cats and animals, following scent trails and generally having fun, so of course I had to take him in. We did not let him out straight away as we needed him to get used to us, and to get used to the other feline family members and hopefully to come when called. He needed to feel this was indeed his new home. Like most cats, at first he wanted to hide which he did under the duvet on my bed. A tempting array of cat food and biscuits was placed out for him but he would not eat any cat food, not even biscuits. He eventually decided all he wanted were meaty sticks, hand fed to him, not broken and left in a dish or on the bed. We found the name of Garfield a bit cumbersome and seemed always to refer to him as

‘Ginger’, so the name stuck. A new name, a new home, it was appropriate. Very soon Ginger decided his favourite place to sleep was in the wash basin or in the bath, anywhere but in the lounge where the other cats were. He might have had feline friends at his previous home, but that did not mean he wanted to befriend any more. They tried to make him feel welcome, no one objected to him, they greeted him as best they could and tried to make him feel at home, but he was having none of it. There was one big problem with our new cat Ginger’s which I was not made favourite aware of before I took place! him in. He was a door scratcher! I had spent a lot of money on my doors, and door scratching did not go down well at all. I was beside myself worrying about how to deal with this problem. A scratching post was made up for him with a carpeted platform on the top and he did start to use this which curbed his door scratching just a little, but if he wanted to go out of a room, or into a room, he still scratched the door. Our doors are now all protected with aprons of hardboard suspended by strings hung on over-door hooks and tied around the doors. Not the prettiest home decoration I have to admit, but for the time being, it will have to do and at least they do protect the doors from any further damage from this door scratching cat. The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £15.00 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on: 01202 826244. Any proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

decided to keep the Longbridge design and technical office for ‘Europeanisation’ and to facilitate the move from older designs to new cars, with all production to be in Shanghai to minimise costs. The MG GS is one of a few recent iterations of this. First impression of the ‘Exclusive’ version - a boldly designed handsome-aggressive car painted in bright metallic bronze, it looks mighty good. Open the strikingly large doors to a very spacious black leather interior with armchair comfort - another major plus and I couldn’t help but reminisce to the original Austin Mini which looked tiny outside but was cavernous inside - that same Longbridge heritage! No keyless entry - for me a plus point as a physical key does improve security and thankfully no pretentious ‘button’ start, a boy-toy gadget I find rather silly on a modern road car. A large ‘home screen’ in the centre of the dashboard gives access to all settings except those basic things you need to adjust dynamically on the road. A well-specified sound system features DAB and those funny comms thingies which begin with ‘i’ - more importantly bluetooth to enable handsfree. All controls fall to hand and visibility including climate and cruise control, the latter only of the manually adjustable variety - adaptive technology is simple but the Liddar sensor costs money which hasn’t been spent on this car.

On the road, roller-skate handling enables quick and accurate road placement so fast motoring is a real pleasure, with a responsive 1.5 litre Turbo petrol engine running very quietly at cruise. To gain speed rapidly it needs rowing through the gears - a pleasure with nicely chosen gear ratio’s (another Longbridge speciality) and a snappy change that encourages playing tunes on the engine, so every journey can be a pleasure. Couple this to economy of at least 35mpg, yet if driven frugally it will easily exceed 45mpg. This is startlingly good for a large-looking petrol SUV. The demerits? Great handling comes at the expense of poor ride quality. The UK design team need to re-think spring -damper rates from scratch for a better ridehandling-comfort compromise. Better materials for the plasticky dash top and door cappings would greatly enhance perceived quality. The ‘blade’ steering column adjustment lever was almost touching my left knee, dangerously inexcusable. And why no adaptive cruise control? In summary, this car is fun and superb value. Entry level pricing ranges from £15k, to only £20k for the ‘Exclusive’. But with only a small dealer network, access to an MG service point would be very important.

hese are times of uninformed and randomly extreme views. Hard data painstakingly compiled, is ignored. Could I be referring to our extreme economic pronouncements and political double-talk? Maybe but no, my current experience is of the MG GS ‘Exclusive’ SUV with 2-wheel drive, a car built by a Chinese company from a design mainly hammered out in Longbridge, Birmingham. Based on other Journo opinions, my hopes were not high, so the reality was a major shock - this is a very good car! My lesson learned; don’t judge without tangible information and hands-on experience! MG was thought up by Cecil Kimber in the late 20’s. He offered a sporty car based upon then-current Morris models. The formula worked well but inevitably ‘progress’ over 70 years meant takeovers and watered-down cars, ultimately becoming part of the underfunded, under-managed and over-politicised Rover Group which stuttered to a halt in 2005. The Chinese (Nanjing) bought the remnants for little cash and proceeded to rationalise this basket-case into new models intended mainly for their home market. They had

Global Outdoor Classroom Day 7th September 2017

O

utdoor Classroom Day is a global initiative to encourage children to enjoy and share the great outdoors while playing and learning. Schools are invited to sign up; the first Outdoor Day was on 18th May while the second and third are on 7th September and 12th October 2017 respectively. A world map on www.outdoorclassroomday.com shows how many schools have joined the initiative so far. Keen to become involved, Moyles Court School in the New Forest near Ringwood have so far arranged for their Junior School to spend a day with a New Forest National Park Education Ranger learning about New Forest habitats and food chains, threats to the Forest (especially to ground nesting birds)

and what we can do to help protect the Forest environment. The Senior School’s trip to the Reptile Centre and Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary revealed adders with their babies and even the rare smooth snake. Learning outdoors creates lasting memories, builds greater awareness of the environment and provides more opportunity for children to think independently. Moyles Court School is perfectly situated for outdoor life, with its own secure woods and grounds, while the school gates open directly onto the New Forest National Park. Moyles Court are having an Open Day on 30th September where you can learn more about the School’s natural environment.

egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.

If you are not helped by the traditional answers about community, compassion, and what life’s all about, perhaps you instead need to find people who keep playing with and celebrating the questions.

P

lans to make businesses keep digital records and prepare tax returns quarterly will now only apply to businesses with a turnover above £85,000 and now not until at least 2020. These changes will not be required for smaller businesses. However, small business owners will still focus better on running their own business, get added peace of mind and may save money overall by delegating tax returns and official documents to a qualified accountant.

Ian Keatley qualified as a Chartered Accountant with a small accounting practice. He also worked for over 20 years with a large firm (PwC) in Bournemouth and Southampton. His local practice, KCI Accountancy, is keen to help owners of small growing businesses and private individuals with their tax returns. Ian can also help with specific financial advice, keeping track of finances and writing a business plan for a bank loan see www.kciaccountancy.co.uk.

The History of Hygiene by Catherine Rose nosegays to combat bad smells when outdoors.

History

W

e take for granted the availability of hot water on tap and the vast range of personal hygiene products available. But in the Middle Ages, things were a little different. Describing the flooring of medieval houses, the social critic Erasmus (1466-1536) said they “… are covered with rushes, occasionally renewed, but so imperfectly that the bottom layer is left undisturbed, sometimes for twenty years, harbouring expectoration, vomiting, the leakage of dogs and men, ale droppings, scraps of fish, and other abominations not fit to be mentioned.” Outside, conditions were worse. Our modern sewage system didn’t exist until Victorian times. In towns, waste from chamber pots kept under the bed was simply jettisoned out of the window to fall in the gutter below, unless you were lucky enough to be within spitting distance of an open cess pit. Pavements were generally built high and gutters would have been filthy places, running with vermin and excrement. Seasonal baths were recommended by

the monasteries but understandably, large quantities of hot water were difficult to come by without the plumbing we enjoy today. Public baths had a poor reputation and personal bathing was uncommon. When it took place, it was often in a wooden barrel with herbs added to the water. Personal hygiene amongst the nobility was better. Before dining, they would wash their hands in a stone basin called a laver (French for ‘to wash’). Castles also had garderobes or privy chambers – primitive toilets consisting of a stone or wooden bench with a hole cut in. Waste would fall into the moat below. The King had a servant specifically to wipe his bottom with the grand title of ‘The Groom of the King’s Close Stool’. The groom looked after the King’s personal commode and although it sounds like a grim job, it was a highly respected and trusted position. People didn’t change their clothing as often as we do today so body odour was disguised with perfume. Lice were commonplace – even wigs could become infested. Wealthy women carried

Pomanders would be hung in the wardrobe to sweeten the smell of stale clothing. When clothes were washed, to remove stains, they were scrubbed with a mixture of urine, ashes and lye. Soapwort – a flower that lathers in water – was also used. Sanitary towels were washable rags filled with sphagnum moss, also known as blood moss and often used in battle for its absorbent properties. Teeth were cleaned with a cloth and a herbal abrasive, usually ashes of rosemary and mint or powdered sage, followed by a vinegar mouthwash. When toothache became unbearable, people visited the local barber who was also a minor surgeon, hence the barber’s traditional striped red and white pole which stands for blood and bandages. Following the widespread outbreak of the Black Death, Edward III passed a law to clean up ditches and waterways. Although it would be around 300 years before bacteria were discovered, the link between poor hygiene and the spread of the disease had been noticed. Since then, thankfully, we have become cleaner. Some argue we have gone too far the other way, and that a little dirt helps strengthen immunity – although I am sure that no one would want a return to the Middle Ages.

T

here has been a very encouraging response to the new Lifestyle club, as advertised in Roundabout Ringwood in April. A couple of years ago Tina Hooper, the group’s leader, had an idea for the club, which was then developed from the results of the “What Hurts Most” questionnaire taken by the local Churches Together. Those people surveyed in the older age group expressed fears of age related illnesses, and the Lifestyle Club is hoping to address these fears through moderate, age appropriate exercise and informative chats on nutrition and diet. Tina and Julie were both trained by Megafitness who run similar projects throughout the UK, and Tina is a qualified nutrition advisor. The hourly sessions also include time to get to know others in the class over a hot drink. These comments are from those who are

already attending the classes: “My coordination, even in the few weeks I’ve been attending, has improved enormously”. “I have had two knee replacements, and I’m finding the gentle exercises so helpful in restoring the use of my muscles”. “I’m really enjoying the social side of the classes, as well as the exercise and nutritional information. It’s nice to get to meet different people.” If you are interested in giving the class a try, contact Tina on 07504925037 or Julie on 07754835699 Classes are open to both men and women and are £3.00 per session. A Hobby That Spans 150 Million Years By Kate McLelland

W

Hobbies

hen plumber Steve Etches began collecting fossils as a young man, he could hardly have imagined that one day he would open the doors to his own fossil museum. Since the 1980s, when he started hunting for fossils in his spare time, Steve – now aged 66 - has dug up more than 2,000 specimens. The £5m Etches Collection Museum of Jurassic Marine Life – to give it its full title – is the pinnacle of this Dorset plumber’s remarkable achievements. A fossil is formed when an animal or plant dies and is rapidly buried by sand, soil or mud. Fossilization occurs when the circumstances for preserving the body are just right, and that’s why an ancient seabed – where bodies are quickly covered up – is one of the best places to look. There are different types of fossil: ‘body fossils’ include the petrified remains of animals, fish and plants and even microscopic organisms such as bacteria. Another type of fossil is the ‘trace fossil’, which shows an imprint of something that has once lived, such as a human footprint. Steve Etches was fortunate

to live near Dorset’s Jurassic coast, but you don’t need to live near a rich excavation site to make fossil collecting your hobby. Fossil collectors are a diverse group and vary from the casual collector to the dedicated hobbyist, who might even travel the world looking for rare specimens. Some individuals even combine a fossil hobby with collecting crystals and minerals. A sharp pair of eyes is the best tool for finding new specimens, as most fossils are lying in plain sight amongst the stones on the beach (although you may need help to identify likely fossils at first). Special geological hammers can be used to gently crack open the rock encasing them if necessary. One of the best sources of information about fossil collecting can be found at www.ukfossils.co.uk. Here you’ll find a list of activities taking place throughout the country, including organised fossil hunts and fossil shows where you can chat to experts and buy specimens. Alternatively, discuss your finds with other fossil hunters at www.discussfossils.com. If you are buying items to add to your collection, it’s

best to stick to recommended sites, as forgers can create spectacular fakes out of resin that are almost impossible to differentiate from the real thing. You can pay anything from under a pound for a fossilized shark’s tooth to hundreds of pounds for a really good specimen, but the sky’s the limit when it comes to the rarest examples. The highest price ever recorded for a fossil was $7.6 million, paid for a T-Rex skeleton nicknamed “Sue” in 1997. As a fossil collector you can scale your hobby exactly as you wish: either keep a few items in a display box at home or make a trailblazing contribution to science like Steve Etches, who is now considered a worldwide authority on fossils and has even been awarded an MBE for his work. As this article began by describing Steve’s extraordinary achievements, it’s only right that he should have the last word: “You don’t need to go to university to do this. You can’t learn what I’ve learned from a three or four year degree. You can do it as a hobby and take it from there.” Happy hunting.

Are You Missing Something? By Christina Smith

B

y connecting with others we can begin to know and develop ourselves. When we connect with another we find that we have a curiosity in the other, have a mutual genuine interest, we listen well to what the other has to say and show concern for each other. We are kind, play and are open, we become vulnerable but feel safe. Just think of the last time someone rushed towards you with open arms, confirming how well liked or loved you are. When connections go wrong they can be very painful indeed. For example; when you expect a loving welcome and you get a cold reception, or you express a fond goodbye but receive a quick ‘bye’ and the other person quickly withdraws. When there are one too many misconnections the other person in the relationship may begin to withdraw and move away. When misconnections become too frequent something in the relationship may break and is never repaired. This may disrupt other relationships in a person’s life for years to come. A connection may fail when a person dares to tell the other an important thing and the other makes light of it, does not react at all or becomes angry and defensive. The conversation lacks empathy and can be seen as emotional abandonment. If you have been affected by emotional abandonment then

Lazy Days Whether you’re stretching out on a sun lounger, or just grabbing an hour’s peace and quiet in your garden, a good book is a summer essential in our opinion.

Book Reviews

Standard Deviation – Katherine Heiny Graham’s second wife, Audra, is warm, sociable and always ready to throw herself headlong into any situation. The total opposite of his first wife, Elspeth, in fact. So when Elspeth unexpectedly comes back into Graham’s life, he finds himself wondering how on earth he could have fallen in love with two such different women, and whether he’s ended up with the right one. If you like quirky characters, wry humour and reflections on the absurdities of everyday life, this book is for you.

Palace of Curiosities – Rosie Garland Abel and Eve are not like other people. Abel’s body heals itself. He has no idea how old he is, but his fractured

Reservoir 13 – Jon McGregor A teenage girl goes missing while on holiday in an English village. Seasons come and go and life goes on, but the girl’s mysterious disappearance continues to affect village life. Some people dream of finding her alive, others of discovering her body. This is not a crime novel, more a glimpse into human nature. There are a lot of characters, and you get to know each one as they go about their daily lives. It’s a quiet book, but it certainly draws you in.

Once in a Blue Moon Lodge – Lorna Landvik A warm, comfortable kind of story with great characters, first loves, old flames and family dynamics. Once in a Blue Moon Lodge follows a family over two decades – Nora, her mother Patty Jane and her grandmother Ione. It’s the sequel to Patty Jane’s House of Curl, but works as a standalone novel. There is a large cast of characters, and the timeline is hard to follow at times, as it jumps from past to present. Nevertheless, it’s a very enjoyable beach read.

100% Real – Sam Talbot If you’re looking for inspiration for healthy, tasty summer recipes, this book could be just what you need. While its focus is on clean eating, it’s not just about chia seeds and green tea. Recipes include White Fish Curry, Jerk Chicken, and Dark Chocolate Soufflé with Rum Cream. Recipes are accompanied by full page photos, and are, on the whole, easy to follow. From light lunches and snacks to dishes to impress friends, you’ll find yourself reaching for this cookery book time and time again.

The Trouble with Goats and Sheep – Joanna Cannon It’s 1976 and 10 year old Grace’s neighbour, Mrs Creasy, has gone missing. With her best friend Tilly in tow, Grace sets out to solve the mystery. It soon becomes apparent that the community is hiding plenty of secrets, some of which go back almost a decade. Grace comes across as rather naive for her age at times, but she’s very likeable. A funny, easy read that will make waiting around at a station or airport much more bearable.

memories suggest he’s been alive for a very long time. Eve – the Lion Girl – is covered from head to toe in golden hair. Together they are the two main attractions in a show featuring extraordinary people. Set in Victorian England, this is a beautiful tale of humanity and what it means to be ‘different’ in a world that prizes convention.

Portrait of a Local Artist The landscape and its variety attracted artist Dick Hewitson to Dorset.

A

keen walker and living in the county since 1970, he taught biology and used to run very successful residential biology field courses in the Purbecks. Now a full-time painter, Dick finds much inspiration from the area. “I do some plein air painting, and tend to prefer coastal locations, including the Purbecks,” he says. However, many of his paintings arise from drawings, so he does quite a lot of charcoal drawings when researching a painting. “I often paint recognisable places, like Chapman’s pool, but do not really paint ‘views’. There is always a degree of abstraction in my paintings and I am not aiming for photographic realism.” As a university student in the early ‘60s Dick studied biology. In that period he became very interested in the arts, especially the visual arts. “During my post-graduate teacher training course at Birmingham, training to become a science teacher, I had the opportunity to learn about oil painting, one morning a week for a whole term, when I studied with a tutor from the art department of Birmingham University. I was the only student. Basically, I learned how to handle oil paint. I began painting on my own in those early days, but I spent my working life mainly as a biology teacher. I did not pick up painting again until about 2011. I realised long ago that if I was to paint seriously, I would need to put a lot of time into it, which is why I spend several days a week painting, most weeks. I am very attracted to the natural world, and this may be reflected in the rather ‘organic’ quality of much of my work.” Dick is a member of Creative Coverage, which represents selected professional artists and craftspeople. www.dickhewitson.co.uk

Poulner Infant School Woodland Library opened by Ringwood Mayor

O

n Thursday 24th June, Ringwood Mayor Tim Ward cut the ribbon to officially open Poulner Infant School’s woodland themed library. Deputy Head Teacher Bev Palmer has worked hard to create a library to help inspire a love of reading in the pupils of Poulner Infant School. It has been thanks to the generosity of local companies and help from parents that the library has been transformed in to a tranquil woodland area, a large tree as the centrepiece with soft log seating under the leafy canopy. During the opening ceremony the student librarians gave a big thank you for the time and support given by the School Library Service, the School Dads Club and Mrs Goldsmith and for the generous donations of paint from Johnstone’s Paint, a grassy rug from The Carpet Barn and £500 from JP Morgan.

Moors Valley Country Park to share in National Lottery fund to improve access for people with disabilities

M

oors Valley Country Park & Forest near Ringwood is benefitting from a share in a half-million pound National Lottery-funded scheme to improve access for visitors with mobility and sensory impairments to heritage sites in the south west. The Heritage Ability scheme, established by Living Options Devon, was awarded £527,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, to build a greater understanding of the barriers experienced by disabled and deaf people when visiting heritage sites in the south west. Moors Valley is one of 18 heritage sites to benefit from the funding. Moors Valley has already made great strides in improving accessibility and achieved a Gold award for Access & Inclusivity in the 2016 Dorset Tourism Awards. Led by a team of disabled and deaf volunteers and advisors, the Heritage Ability project includes improving access for people with physical disabilities, establishing British Sign Language as part of each site’s interpretation and making adaptations to improve experiences for those with autism. By developing tailored ways of working for each site, and providing training for heritage site staff, the project aims to make long-term changes to the accessibility

of heritage across the South West. Katie Davies, Accessibility Champion at Moors Valley, said, “We are really excited to be part of this project. Working with specialist advisers will help us to focus on where we can improve and ensure that we have the right skills and facilities in place to make the countryside as accessible as possible to everyone. With this in mind, we want to hear from representatives of local organisations, and individuals with particular access needs, and first-hand knowledge of Moors Valley, who can help us to identify where we can make best use of this great opportunity.” Diana Crump, CEO at Living Options said: “We would like to thank members of the public whose support for the Heritage Lottery Fund has made it possible for us to bring this project to life. Here at Living Options Devon, we believe that disabled people and those from the Deaf community should have the same life chances as everyone else – this includes being able to access beauty spots and enjoy the scenery, learn about their local wildlife and the history of old and interesting buildings through accessible information. We can’t wait to work with our amazing partner sites to help disabled people enjoy and marvel at their beauty and history.”

Vicar of Dibley comes to Ringwood!

o, no, no, no… yes – the Vicar of Dibley is coming to Ringwood! The play based on the hilarious TV comedy starring Dawn French will be staged by Ringwood Musical & Dramatic Society in the autumn. RMDS will be bringing to life two episodes of the Richard Curtis series and has already chosen a cast of local actors who have more than a passing resemblance to the TV favourites. Expect to see daft-as-a-brush verger Alice Tinker, lemon curd and fish pie from old Mrs Copley, pedantic note-taking from parish

secretary Frank, and dodgy animal husbandry from Owen the farmer. Parish chairman David Horton will of course be horrified to discover the new vicar is a woman, his son Hugo will still be besotted with Alice, and vicar Geraldine Grainger will appear to be the only sane one among them. And what about Jim? Will he be there? No, no, no, no… yes! The Vicar of Dibley runs at the Ringwood School Theatre from 25th-28th October. Tickets will be available online from: www.rmds.org.uk
