Welcome I Dear Readers, n case you haven’t identified this issue’s festive cover pic which no doubt most of you have, it was taken from the Jubilee Gardens bridge last January looking back across the Millstream towards the church. Ringwood always looks so pretty in the snow - I almost look forward to it! It’s just a pity about the months of miserable cold weather either side that we have to endure! Although of course our English winters are comparatively warm for many of our feathered friends who actually choose to spend winter here at Blashford Lakes - up to seven thousand at a time in fact - see page 10. And to get your teeth chattering even more, our book review on page 30 also features wintery themes! Time to turn up the thermo-

stat now with a selection of cool gadgets to keep you warm on page 8, or just dream about the sun on a Caribbean trip to Grenada - our travel article on page 24. (Not to be confused with Granada in Spain of course, unlike the unfortunate lady who recently took a trip to Granada in Spain and somehow ended up on a plane to the Caribbean!) Remember - in future when you need a repair, a job done or to treat yourself over the festive period then look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ to see what is available locally and save time, fuel and most importantly - money! Finally I would like to wish all my readers and advertisers old and new the very warmest of festive greetings for this Christmas and for the New Year.

ROUNDABOUT
ROUNDABOUT RINGWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE & SURROUNDING VILLAGES
NOW and THEN Hightown Road, Ringwood
T
he old photograph in this issue features the bottom of Hightown Road opposite the Lamb Inn at the junction to Christchurch Road. Judging by the long dress worn by the woman walking along the pavement, the photograph was taken about a hundred years ago. The caption states that the road was then known as Station Road, for the obvious reason that Ringwood railway station was then situated on the right hand side, as can be glimpsed in the distance (now Castleman Way). Hightown Road has over the centuries also been known by various other names including Clark’s Lane, Southend and Cemetery Road. The large pair of houses in the foreground was then known as Montagu House. The lefthand side was used as refreshment rooms serving lunches and teas. The right-hand side was a post office. Its window displayed postcards and advertisements for ices and Fry’s chocolate and cocoa. In 1911 the census shows it was run by sub-postmaster James Hext who was also a clock and watch repairer connected to his
family’s shop at Fridays Cross. He was living at Montagu House with his wife Emily and children Leslie aged 9 and Doris aged 8. Kelly’s directory of 1911 states that the post box, which can be seen set into the wall beside the door, was cleared five times a day at 8.45 & 9.25am and 12.45, 4.45 & 8.30 pm, with a Sunday collection at 11.45am. The sub-post office continued for most of the 20th century, until it closed sometime during the 1980s and became a private house. The walls and railings outside have long gone, replaced by metal chain-link fencing. The roof slates have been replaced by concrete tiles and the pitched roofs over the bay windows flattened, losing some of the character of the original building. The other houses in the centre of the old photograph remain very much the same today as they appeared in 1911. Their name, Montagu Terrace, can still be seen painted high up on the first house in the terrace. The November 2013 main difference is that in 1911 no one expected the occupiers of these houses to need to have somewhere to park a car!

The Heat Is On Cool gadgets to keep you warm this winter
E
very year, heating our homes becomes ever more expensive, and as a result we do all kinds of things to cut our bills: we make sure our homes are properly insulated, turn the thermostat down a notch and do our best to save energy. But no matter what kind of heating system you have, there’s a very good chance you’re heating your entire home rather than the room you’re using. Wouldn’t it be great if you could heat just the bit you’re in - and do it quickly so you don’t have to sit shivering? That’s the thinking behind Dyson’s fan heaters, which use the firm’s “air multiplier” technology to send a steady stream of hot air without the buffeting you get from normal fan heaters. They aren’t cheap - expect to pay £249 for a heater, or £349 for one that can cool air in the summer but they’re safe, effective and extremely efficient. If you’d rather not spend quite so much on a heater, halogen heaters are worth considering: instead of heating the air, they heat whatever you point them at - and they do so instantly, which is a real boon if you’ve just come home from a typically cold November day. Prices start at around £15 for
a basic model, and you can also buy models designed for heating outside areas. For larger rooms, it’s worth looking for heaters that can rotate: that enables them to heat a wider area than immobile heaters can reach. Make sure they have anti-tilt shut-offs too, so that they automatically switch themselves off if they’re accidentally toppled. The cheapest heaters around are fan heaters, which as the name suggests use a fan to blow air over a heating element. According to the Energy Saving Trust they aren’t less efficient than other kinds of heating, but the less powerful the fan the longer it’ll take them to heat a room: we wouldn’t recommend trying to heat a high-ceilinged room with an £8 fan heater from the local supermarket. If you spend a lot of time using a computer you’ll know that your fingers are often the first things to feel the cold. Technology has the answer to that too: V8 Tools’ heated computer keyboard is exactly what it sounds like, although for the time being you’ll need to import one from the US. Avoid USB-powered heating devices: products such as USB-powered Monkey Hand Warmers are novelty gifts, not
practical products. If you often suffer from frozen feet there’s a gadget for that too: the AccuLux foot warming mat, a flexible heating mat that’s designed to make your tootsies toasty. Expect to pay £39.99. Humans aren’t the only creatures to benefit from heating pads: they’re available for pets too. A quick search on eBay uncovers all kinds of electric pad heaters for dog and cat beds, with prices as low as £19.99. If you’d rather not leave anything electrical near your pets, microwaveable heat pads do much the same job for slightly less money. While you’re microwaving things for your pets, why not warm up some pads for yourself? You can try a pair of microwaveable slippers, a microwaveable hand warmer or a microwaveable neck wrap, and if you’re suffering from sports injuries or arthritis you might find they help ease your symptoms too. Alternatively you might like to try the Heat In A Click Muscle Warm Pad, which quickly heats up to 54 degrees celsius and lasts for 20 minutes to two hours depending on the size of pad you buy.

Chameleon on wheels
Mike's Motors
By Mike Wattam
M
otoring hacks haven’t been kind to Peugeot in the ‘hot hatch’ department since their positive experiences of the old 205GTi - probably the most highly respected hot hatch of its day and certainly well ahead of the equivalent VW Golf – was superseded by the 206. The 205GTi had been liked even with smaller engines, and with the 1.9 litre petrol engine in GTi guise was capable both of excellent performance ‘on paper’ and in real-life conditions – simply the best. Today very few survive. Write-offs were common as the handling didn’t really match the very powerful engine which wasn’t in itself particularly reliable, and that old rust problem which doesn’t afflict half-decent modern cars saw off a lot of cars too. A small band of dedicated enthusiasts keep the last 205GTi’s on the road. Then Peugeot built the 206GTi and more recently the 207GTi, both capable cars but with less powerful engines and lacklustre trim - losing the plot versus the original 205GTi by using run-of-the-mill engines and even offered the car in 5-door form, sacrilege! The last of the 207GTi’s in 200bhp form were unsung heros - but being devoid of advertising support nobody new or cared about them. Albeit rare, these can today be enjoyed as used car bargains. With the new 208 series Peugeot have produced a delightful,
powerful, compact successor. Be impressed by the purposeful appearance on huge wheels, complemented by a discrete roof spoiler. Open the door to be greeted by styling detail everywhere from the superb bucket seats to the facia with all modcons built in including a fantastic DAB radio, bluetooth, USB, sat-nav, climate control and all kinds of ‘big car’ creature comforts too extensive to list. In the driver’s seat, the most outstanding feature is the low, adjustable small steering wheel and the accessibility of all driving and en-
tertainment controls. The huge touch-sensitive sat-nav screen also controls the sound system, trip computer and all vehicle settings. The main instruments are seen clearly above the wheel in a perfect position to observe while still concentrating on the road. Interior space is surprisingly large both in the front and in the back, but very tall drivers can cause problems for the rear seat passenger – but then I’m not planning to chauffeur 4 large Americans around! But how does it drive? Superbly. Fire up and it shouts power,
nimbleness and all-round excellence. Town cruising is easy with a large and flexible engine, delightful gear-change and a good all-round view. Floor the accelerator and the horizon changes very quickly indeed. Ride is only slightly hard yet precise. Poor roads, long sweeping bends and low speed corners are all taken without any drama at all, it just GOES whether you want, whether driven on the loud button or limo-style. So - comfort, quietness, long legs for long distances, everything conveniently at your fingertips – simply perfect. As a café racer it also excels. So can it beat the classic 205GTi? The answer is a resounding yes, it’s on another planet. Much faster, safer and luxurious, but still great fun. And it does the one thing the 205GTi could never do – be a fast, quiet, tireless long distance runner. Even the fuel consumption is far better at an overall figure of 35mpg driven hard during my road test. From £19,000 new, this just has to be the only bargain GTi. Downsides? In my view the bonnet-grille area lets down the external styling, possibly compromised by Peugeot’s apparent need to keep the car very compact. Grille detailing only serves to draw attention to their compromise. Will a mid-life face-lift cure that? Yes, it does fit my garage. How To Make An Extra £100 A Week From Home By Jasmine Birtles
S
tuck at home and need to make some extra cash? There are lots of ways you can do it. Here are just a few of them. Be a Virtual Assistant A Virtual Assistant (VA) is someone who works as a secretary outside the office from their computer at home. It can involve a wide range of tasks, however the more specialised your skills are, the more you’ll be able to charge. To be a successful VA, you’ll definitely need to be computersavvy and have experience of admin work already. Agencies like VA4U.com charge up to £150 per client per day, but typically you would charge between £15 – £25 per hour for routine admin work done by phone or email. Giving your opinions Make £50-100 a time in cash for giving your opinions in focus groups. Companies like Sarosresearch.com need people of all ages and in various parts of the country to join a focus group every now and then to give opinions on anything from shampoo to high-end cars. If you have the time and don’t mind answering questions you could do online surveys. The work is fairly sporadic but it requires minimal effort and you have nothing to lose,
not to mention the fact that it’s all done from the comfort of your own home. Websites such as www.opinionoutpost.co.uk, www.uk.mysurvey.co.uk and www.valuedopinions.co.uk offer free paid surveys (N.B. you should never pay to join up or hand over your credit card details). Then there are online competitions. For example, Freepostcodelottery.com is free to enter and gives away £20 every day at noon to one of the postcodes on their list. There’s no catch, but you will have to check each day to see if your number has come up. Check our competitions page on Moneymagpie.com. Set up an online buying and selling business Do you collect dolls or electronic gadgets or some other lowpriced collectible? If you’re a little knowledgeable about a particular niche area you could make money by buying and selling items online. Scour car boot sales, charity shops and jumble sales for cheap items that you could sell for a profit. Then set up a seller’s account on eBay or eBid and start selling. Make sure you keep a squeakyclean rating as buyers are much more likely to buy from you if you have 100% approval.
Of course you can make money online purely by selling your junk on a regular basis. In fact, once you are used to that you can sell on behalf of other people. Take a 30% cut of the profit (once you have taken out your advertising, postage and packing costs). Propagate seedlings If you have green fingers and a decent-sized greenhouse (or somewhere else to place plant pots) you could make around £600 a week between February and October by propagating seedlings. Grow plants that you then sell at car boot sales and at local garages and shops or to friends and neighbours. To make a profit you need to choose carefully the type of plants you are going to grow. Some seeds cost £2.99 for six and some cost £2.99 for 1,500. You do the maths. Try to do a deal with your local garden centre to buy the pots that you’ll need and they would usually throw away. Also go online and bulk-buy compost. FUN FACT: More than two thirds of people in the UK have sold something second-hand. The average amount raised per person in the last 12 months is £106.15. CDs and DVDs are the most popular second-hand item, followed by books and clothes.

Texture and Style Extensions come in a vast range of textures, so that they will blend with your own locks. There are straight lengths, spiral curls and everything in between. It’s important to match the texture to your own hair for the extensions to lie and fall properly. Application There are many ways to apply extensions to your hair and some can be more comfortable, gentle and affordable than others. Clip-in/Tie-in - Ideal for occasional use and can be taken out and applied easily to achieve a variety of different looks. Because of the way they are joined to the hair, they don’t always look natural and can be obvious to the touch. Heat Fusion – Provide long lasting results, with a natural looking finish. However, because heat is used, this method can damage your own hair. Cold Fusion - Unlike heat fusion, cold fusion doesn’t use any heat for application, meaning that your natural hair won’t be damaged. The results are very natural looking, as well as long lasting. Weft – Can look very natural when applied correctly, although to the touch a weft can feel chunky if not applied with skill. Microbead – No need for glue or heat to be applied, which limits damage to your own natural hair. Extensions are fixed in place using a small bead. By Helen Taylor

TRAVEL
Colourful Grenada
By Solange Hando
G
lowing like an emerald in the southern Caribbean, Grenada is small enough to drive around in a day but amazingly diverse, from the sheltered Caribbean coast in the west, fringed with white powdery sand, to the Atlantic shore on the eastern side and its sprinkling of volcanic beaches battered by Trade Winds. There are quiet bays, forests and mountains, blessed by blue skies and the occasional shower of ‘liquid sunshine’. The air smells of flowers and spice and the picturesque capital of St George’s comes straight out of a fairy tale. Basking on the west coast of this exotic English-speaking island, the town is laced with pastel-hued houses and quaint colonial dwellings clinging to luxuriant slopes. Fort George keeps watch on a rocky promontory, its old cannons pointing out to sea, an arduous climb on a sunny day but when you reach the windswept battlements festooned in valerian, the view takes your breath away, stretching over the hills, town and harbour, and along the coast meandering far into the distance. The capital has three harbours, none prettier than the horseshoe-shaped Carenage glinting with sails
and water taxis waiting to ferry beach lovers to the sweeping sands of Grand Anse across the bay. Later, there will be time to explore the West Indian market selling palm leaf hats, batik, sweet potatoes and spices along the shore or feast on fresh fish and traditional spinach-like callaloo soup in a cool waterside restaurant. Sweetcorn sizzles on roadside barbecues and church bells chime crystal clear as the last cruise ship sails into the sunset. You couldn’t dream of a better place to relax on a balmy evening, lulled by the beat of steel drums somewhere in the hills. One sixth of Grenada is preserved as nature parks and wildlife sanctuaries, where copper-coloured monkeys swing in the trees and the call of tropical birds echoes all around. At over 2000 feet, the vast crater lake of Grand Etang glistens right at the heart of the National Park, a land of deep gorges and lush mountains with flamboyant and rainbow trees, bamboo groves, babbling streams and spectacular waterfalls tumbling through tangled rainforest. Below these steamy highlands, mangos, oranges and papaya grow on fertile slopes and nutmeg, the ‘black
gold’ introduced by the British, leaves its scent wherever you go. It drifts around the hairpin bends, the telegraph poles painted red and green, the hamlets and their rickety wooden huts on stilts and the nostalgic plantation houses peeping through the trees among old sugar mills and sulphurous springs. Far below, the fishing fleet bobs at anchor in Gouyave and Levada beach awaits the return of breeding turtles. On the glass-bottom boats, wideeyed visitors marvel at urchins, buttercup fish gleaming like gold, giant starfish, brightlystriped parrot fish and great clusters of underwater fern swaying in slow motion. On the secluded beach of La Sagesse, palms rustle in the breeze while the sun lights up Coral Cove and the lovely fjords indenting the south eastern shore. But most enticing of all are the tropical blooms, orchids, ginger lily, heliconia and many more splashing myriad scents and colours from shore to shore. It’s little wonder that in the past 15 years, Grenada has claimed as many medals, including ten gold, at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Calendar Girls & Boys do it again! Have you ever wished you had bought a piece of art before the artist became famous?
H
ere is a chance to do just that! Last year’s very successful calendar collaboration between the Rotary Club of Ringwood and Ringwood School, raised £2500 for local charities including “The Orpheus Trust”, “Epilepsy Action”, “Ringwood Foodbank”, “Romsey Young Carers, and other School and Rotary charities.
This year, Dr. Geoffrey Ridgway OBE,MD, from Rotary and Ringwood School’s Course Leader Stuart Fielder wanted to raise the stakes, and it was agreed to broaden the theme to allow a more artistic interpretation of Ringwood and the surrounding area. Last year’s calendar
was simply superb, but this year, WOW, the students have excelled themselves, and have taken the artistic interpretation to heart. Watch out, I would not mind betting we shall see more of some of these names in the future! To encourage sales and hence benefit charities, the “Ringwood Visions 2014” has been reduced from £6.50 (last year’s price) to £4.99 this year, and is available from Paperview, Miller’s Antiques, Greyfriars, and of course Ringwood School. Please note how many local businesses have again sponsored a month of their choice, for which the organisers are extremely grateful.

Local youngsters are off to volunteer in Africa
ocal Fordingbridge youngsters Ben Cassells and Zoey Ayling are off to Zambia in January to undertake a 3 month volunteer placement with VSO. (VSO: “Voluntary Service Overseas” is a governmentfunded programme that sends young adults to developing countries and any donation does not go towards their personal placement. The VSO vision is a World without Poverty. They will live and work alongside local professionals to tackle poverty and inequality to make a genuine difference in the communities to which they are sent to help.) As part of their commitment to the programme and to help create awareness of VSO, they have a combined target of £1600 to fundraise and will be arranging some fun events in the local area, including pub quizzes, cake sales and raffles. They are also helping out local people for a donation in return. So, if you need your car washing or your dog walking, please contact them! They will also be cycling the South Downs Way, 160km of distance and 3000m of climb, from January 3rd 2014 which they are aiming to complete in 3 days. If you would like to read more or can dig deep and donate, please visit their JustGiving pages: http://www.justgiving.com/Zoey-Ayling1 http://www.justgiving.com/cassells
Please just give what you can afford. It would be an amazing support and they would be truly grateful – and it will help ensure that VSO can continue their valuable work in the future.

Cold Enough for Snow Tom Jones once sang ‘Baby, it’s Cold Outside’, so as December descends why not curl up in front of the fire with our selection of books that will chill you to the bone…one way or another
Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier This is the story of two people: injured Civil War veteran Inman, and Ada, the woman who waits for him. To reach her, Inman must leave his hospital bed and walk the long way home to Cold Mountain. Of course, his epic journey means he encounters many a strange character along the way. Ada, meanwhile, has her own internal struggles to contend with as she battles with her upbringing and the future that Cold Mountain represents. This brilliant and beautifully-written book is one everyone should read at least once in their lifetime. You’ll be transported, without ever leaving your armchair. Snow Falling on Cedars, David Guterson With his hauntingly beautiful descriptions of the wild nature of America’s Pacific Northwest, Guterson’s story of a murder soon reveals itself to be one of a complex love triangle. It’s 1954 and well-respected local fisherman, Carl Heine is found dead in one of his own fishing nets. Local JapaneseAmerican, K a b u o Miyamoto is accused of killing him. In the grip of a terrible snowstorm, the town of San Piedro is forced into dealing with its re c e n t h i s t o r y, and a wave of Anti-Japanese sentiment following World War 2.
To complicate the matter, the local newspaper reporter is in love with Kabuo’s wife. If the snow falls and covers everything, is all forgotten? In Cold Blood, Truman Capote It’s 1959 and a Kansas family is brutally murdered. This hugely controversial book focuses on their two killers: Perry Smith and Dick Hickock. Whilst there’s little doubt that the killing of a husband and wife, along with their two children, is despicable, Smith
and Hickock come across as alarmingly normal and recognisable. Capote has written a very clever true crime work of non-fiction, brought to us in the style of a novel. The whole thing is a bit disturbing really...and at the same time, you just can’t put it down. Into Thin Air, John Krakauer Sometimes the most extraordinary stories we read are those that are true. This is certainly the case in Krakauer’s account of 24 hours of hell at the top of Mount Everest. With photos documenting the scale of the ‘murderous storm’ that bore down on Krakauer and his fellow climbers, it’s clear to see why five lost their lives.
Dealing with the guilt that comes from surviving such a disaster whilst others didn’t, Krakauer’s writing is incredibly compelling and the retelling of the 1996 disaster will leave you gasping. The Spy Who came in from the Cold, John le Carré Spymaster le Carré’s thriller has stood the test of time with reading audiences continuing to be gripped by the powerful combination of love and betrayal that would leave Daniel Craig running crying to his mummy. Set in 1960s Berlin, spy Alex Leamas is basically ready to throw in the towel. Of course, ‘one final assignment’ always spells disaster ahead. Is this really a case of ‘mission impossible’ and will he live to walk away from this one? Frozen in Time, Ali Sparkes One for the younger readers is Ali Sparkes’ novel about two children who are ‘frozen in time’. Freddy and Polly were put into cryonic suspension in the 1950s by their father. But the experiment was only meant to be for a couple of hours; something went drastically awry. Enter Ben and Rachael, who unwittingly uncover the human ice-lollies. Suddenly it looks like the summer hols aren’t going to be so dull after all.

Are you a Unitarian without knowing it?
R
egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.
If you are not helped by the traditional answers about community, compassion, and what life’s all about, perhaps you instead need to find people who keep playing with and celebrating the questions.

Stick Man Trail brings Moors Valley Country Park and Forest to life this winter
F
ans of the popular children’s character Stick Man can enjoy their own Stick Man adventures by following a new activity trail at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest from October half-term until January next year. Created by Julia Donaldson, who also wrote The Gruffalo, Stick Man lives, perhaps not surprisingly, in a tree with his wife and three children. Forestry Commission England has teamed up with the popular children’s character to create a special adventure trail to encourage children and families to get out into the forest. The Moors Valley trail is one of thirteen that Forestry Commission England has created around the country where children can engage in imaginative play and find out more about forests and the importance of wood and trees to their daily lives. Families can have fun and learn about Stick Man’s forest home by following the special Stick Man trail, complete with activities for all ages. The trail winds through the Park and into the Forest with 10 activity boards to help chil-
dren and adults make their own Stick Man to take home, identify tree patterns and shapes, build a twig tower and explore the sights and sounds around them. Emma Reeks, Education Ranger at Moors Valley, said, “Stick Man is a delightful character and has a huge national following built around Julia Donaldson’s engaging story and the copyright © Axel Scheffler, 2008. charming illustrations Illustration Reproduced with the permission of Alison Books. An imprint of Scholastic Ltd. of Axel Scheffler. In the Green All rights reserved story, Stick Man goes for a jog only to find that the world is an eventful place for a stick. Along the way he encounters a dog that wants to play with him, a swan that makes him part of her nest and a boy that uses him as a snowman’s arm. Of course, like all the best stories, this one has a happy ending when Stick Man eventually returns home, with a little help from Santa Claus!” “We estimate that around 5000 children followed Moors Valley’s Gruffalo Trail during the year it was open. I’m sure that Stick Man will be just as popular and will inspire children to use the forest as their playground and create their own stories, while learning vital skills to help in their development.” The Stick Man trail is open from Saturday 26 October to Friday 31 January 2014 and trail cards cost £2 each. Free Stick Man activity sheets can be downloaded from the Forestry Commission website at www.forestry.gov.uk/stickman.
The Griffin has flown from Wimborne Model Town
A
much cherished original photograph that used to hang in the reception area of the old Griffin Hotel, adjacent to Wimborne Station, has disappeared from its perch in the railway room at Wimborne Model Town. Development Manager, Greg Hoar, comments “the donated picture dates from 1929 and shows the licensees of the time with their horse drawn transport. Clearly of local historical importance, Wimborne Model Town wishes its safe return as soon as possible.” The charity can be contacted on 01202 881924 with any information.

Technology matters
n 2012, the government set out a vision for the future of the NHS, promising a ‘paperless’ health service by 2018 and a greater choice of digital channels that offer patients increased choice in the way they access healthcare and manage their health records. Locally, Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBCH) are already taking significant steps towards embracing these challenges and achieving a paperless future. A new digital x-ray viewing system was launched successfully earlier this year across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, and a new electronic document management system (EDMS) is set to be introduced in 2014. The new EDMS system will cut out the need for paper records to be transferred between local hospitals, meaning improved security of information and, crucially, fewer delays for patients.
Dr Rupert Page is a consultant neurologist at Poole Hospital, and explains the difference that improved IT will make: “Our focus is providing high quality, safe clinical care. The key to this is current and complete information wherever that care is being provided. Effective IT support is crucial to meet the increasingly varied ways in which we need to deliver this care and ensure quality. Clinicians are engaged at the heart of the strategy that we are evolving, which we hope will eventually become a beacon for how clinical IT ought to be delivered.”
The three hospitals are also making increased use of digital platforms to support patients and staff. New apps have been launched to benefit orthopaedic patients and people with diabetes, and Poole Hospital recently relaunched its website with a new section that allows patients to provide important feedback on their care. Peter Gill, joint director of informatics across Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, explains more: “By developing our IT systems and adopting new technologies, we can significantly improve our patients’ experience.” “Technology can give patients greater power over their own healthcare and provide staff with the tools they need to provide a more efficient and seamless service.”
“We are already working towards achieving paperless patient journeys through the development and implementation of linked clinical computer systems. We are also committed to increasing our use of digital channels to reduce the effort patients and carers have to make when accessing healthcare and give them more control over their own care options.” In fact, IT already plays an integral part in most patients’ care, and the hospitals’ new informatics strategy includes more than 25 projects set to benefit patients and staff over the next five years. Some will take place behind the scenes, such as improvements to computer rooms, server management and networks.
Other changes, such as a new service desk system and the roll out of an electronic system used to record patients’ clinical observations, will bring more noticeable benefits. The new observations monitoring system, known as VitalPAC, is operated using a handheld device, similar to an iPhone, allowing nursing staff to record or “track” observations, such as blood pressure or heart rate. If a patient’s condition deteriorates, an appropriate member of staff will automatically be alerted.
Sarah Allaway, a senior nurse leading on the clinical implementation of the VitalPAC system at RBCH, says: “We’ve seen how technology has made a huge difference to our patients and the quality of their care. With VitalPAC, changes in patients’ conditions can be monitored much more closely, helping us to respond quickly to those who need it. Patient safety and the quality of their care is the most important part of what we do and it’s fantastic that we’re able to take advantage of modern technology to keep improving the service we provide.”

Portrait of a Dorset Artist It was only when Colin Willey trained to become a teacher that he realised he wanted to become an artist.
N
ow the successful painter who lives in Dorchester, exhibits at the Royal Academy of Art every year. Notable collectors include the novelist, broadcaster and former Conservative MP, Edwina Currie. He moved to the area in 1997 when his wife Amanda secured a job as an art teacher at The Thomas Hardye School, Dorchester. This provided the foundation for Colin to become a professional artist.
Colin’s paintings follow in the tradition of Constable and Turner. “I love the freshness of the outdoor studies Constable painted,” says Colin. “It’s easy to forget that what Constable was doing was new and innovative and largely unappreciated in his own lifetime. Like Constable I often paint close to my home and in the places that have an emotional significance to me. I’ve lived and painted in the county for 15 years now and feel very much at home here.” Colin also feels a connection with Dorset landscape painter Frederick Whitehead. “I like this link with the past and the idea that all those years ago he was travelling around Dorset painting similar views to the ones I’m painting now.” The beaches at Charmouth, Portland and Studland capture Colin’s attention because of the light where he’ll often paint big dramatic skies and billowing clouds. Most recently Lulworth Cove has provided a great source for much inspiration. He’s drawn to a particular part of the Cove called Stair Hole, which Whitehead also painted (his example hangs in Dorset County Museum, Dorchester).
“It wasn’t easy in the early days but I stuck with it and worked hard,” says Colin. “Now I feel very lucky to be able to say that I make a living doing what I love.” www.colinwilley.co.uk

Ringwood Lions Club News
presentation by the Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club took place at The Walhampton Arms in Lymington on Friday 18th October 2013. Presentation cheques for a total of £10,250 were handed over to representatives from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Wessex Heartbeat, and Bashley Football Club. The cheques presented on the evening was from funds raised at the Forest Fayre event held in August at Brockenhurst and the gathering was also an opportunity to celebrate the success of the event, the hard work and generosity of those involved behind the scenes, and the positive outcome of being able to donate so much to well deserving causes.
A Pride of Lions help local Olympic hopeful
T
he Lions Club of New Milton, supported by the other four clubs in the zone (Christchurch, Ringwood & Fordingbridge, Hythe & Waterside and Lymington & Brockenhurst) joined together to present £500 to Kathy Rogers who aspires to be in the Olympic 2020 water polo team On receiving the money Kathy thanked all the local Lions Clubs and said “Thank you to the local Lions Clubs for their very generous support. Funding seems tight and affecting every walk of life at the moment, including sport, although it seems the higher the level you play at, the more funding there is available.” Before accepting the money, Kathy gave an excellent presentation on water polo and her recent trip to Hungary and Turkey as a member of a UK team.

The Unitarians. Many beliefs behind the religious or spiritual experience.
