Dear Readers,
his issue’s cover shows one of Ringwood’s favourite community events - Christmas Carols in the Market Place and also one of mine I might add! By the time you receive this issue we should have had the grand switching on ceremony for the new lights in Ringwood on December 6th all ready for the Carols which I’ll very much look forward to. Staying in the Market Place, the Now and Then article on page 6 features more Market Place properties - Lamberts and The Indian Tree which was unsurprisingly, yet another Ringwood pub! On page 36 we have some old proverbs amusingly updated for the 21st century and reworked to suit the digital age. Yule (I couldn’t resist that!) find the last posting Christmas dates on page 53 and a
with best wishes,
recipe for a traditional Italian Christmas treat page 48 which looks far too good to bake only at Christmas! See our What’s On pages 30 & 32 and website for many local events all around Ringwood in December and January. And we have all the usual articles inside - Viewed From My Window, Mikes Motors, Blashford Bulletin, Book Reviews, Gardening, Beauty, Finance, Technology etc. So when you need a job done or want to treat yourself or a loved one at this time of year AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 54 and save yourself time, fuel and most importantly - money! Finally I would like to wish all my readers and advertisers old and new the very warmest of festive greetings for this Christmas and for the New Year. See you in 2015!

over the business in the 1950s until it was later purchased by Greenfields of Salisbury. In the early 1990s the shop was sold to Malcolm Lambert and Tony Wiltshire, whose partnership continued until Tony’s death two years ago. Today Lamberts continues to sell guns, but has also expanded the stock to include country clothing. The adjoining property was once a public house, originally named the Dolphin but known since the 19th century as the Royal Oak. The 1890 photograph

ambert Gunsmiths occupies a very old property that stretches back from the Market Place alongside an unnamed lane next to Old Bank House. According to a thumbnail sketch on a map of 1769, the building was once joined by an archway to the old Crown Inn (now Old Bank House) and was probably used by ostlers and coachmen, in the same way as the Crown Tap was part of the new Crown Inn at Fridays Cross. By the 19th century the arch had been demolished and the property used as a lodging house. At what date the ground floor became a shop is uncertain, but since the early 20th century this has been a gunsmiths. The first owner was Richard ‘Dicky’ Blanton, who was reputed to be one of the finest makers of guns in Hampshire. He also sold fishing tackle. October Mr Blanton owned an 2014 impressive 1927 Austin saloon car, which was often seen parked outside the shop. He lived in St Ives, so let the first floor flat above his shop to his employee Percy White, who had lost his leg during World War II. Mr Blanton’s son-in-law Tom Andrews took

shows it was then a small Georgian building similar to the gunsmiths. However around 1900 the Royal Oak was enlarged and completely refaced to appear much as it does today. The inn was originally owned by Carters brewery, then Strongs of Romsey and lastly by Whitbread. For many years the Knight family were the licensees. The Royal Oak closed as a public house in 1974, since when it has been a number of different restaurants serving various cuisines. It is currently an Indian eating house called Indian Tree.

UNIQUE CARE FOR YOU All families want to see and feel that their loved ones are cared for with dignity and compassion, that is why we are offering a new way to provide care.
M
any people that require care have often lost confidence due to poor health and isolation which can quickly become a vicious circle resulting in a fear of going out, even if their health has improved. Our aim is to help them regain confidence and find ways to bring them back into the community. This can be achieved by simple measures such as meeting other clients and carers for coffee, or a trip to the library which will help them build friendships and in the long term help lower the cost of care. We have many other ways to help them stay in touch with family and friends reducing their sense of loneliness.
We also want to offer a consistent package preventing any emotional anxiety, especially in cases of dementia where change can have a very detrimental effect. We recognise that everyone is different which is why we will arrange a package UNIQUE to you and your loved ones. Our carers have been very carefully picked, and have DBS checks (formerly known as CRB). They are all very excited about being able to really care and go that extra mile for their clients.

A Gift for You at Christmas
We’ve got Christmas all wrapped up this year, with a set of books designed to have every aspect of the holiday covered. If all else fails though, there’s always the option of packing it all in and doing a runner…and we’ve thought of that as well. He always appears to be in more than one place at once. It’s a bit ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ for modern times, and goes to prove that as we suspected, time really could be the greatest gift of all.
THE TREE: ‘The Giving Tree’ by Shel Silverstein What better kind of spruce this festive season than ‘The Giving Tree’. Loved by children and adults alike, this is a story about a little boy who grows up under the branches of a tree, and continues to take and take throughout his years into adulthood. If you don’t cry when you read this then quite frankly, you must have a heart of stone. It’s such a simple and touching story about our capacity to love and it’s perfect for some fireside snuggling up with whoever you have staying with you this Christmas.
THE GIFT:: ‘The Gift’ by Cecelia Ahern If you ever thought there weren’t enough hours in the day then meet Lou Suffern, a man who constantly needs to be two places at once and who is struggling to keep up. He finds it impossible to really ‘be’ in the present, whether it’s at work or at home with his family. One day he meets a homeless man called Gabe and, taking pity on him, sorts him out with a job in the post room. But there’s something not quite right about Gabe.
THE FOOD: ‘Great British Bake Off: Christmas’ by Lizzie Kamenetzky ‘Stuff your face with plates of blinis, fah-lah-lah-lah lah’ or however it goes! Christmas simply can’t go wrong with Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry helping you along your merry way. There are master class recipes as well as contributions from all four previous winners and other memorable contestants. It’s packed with plenty of inspiration without causing you too much perspiration whilst slaving over a hot stove. It could be a present to yourself…or whoever you’ve talked into doing the cooking.
THE WEATHER: ‘Let it Snow’ by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle Here are three touching and romantic stories that all stem from one incident, as a young girl decides to ditch the stranded train she was travelling on and heads out into the blizzard. The tales then take place over the following few days as the residents of Gracetown struggle to cope with the Christmas Eve storm. Written by some of today’s best-
selling authors they are like three perfectly wrapped little stocking fillers.
THE FAMILY: ‘A Proper Family Christmas’ by Chrissie Manby Whenever someone tells you this is what they want, they mean the nostalgic Christmas card, cookie cutter image. They don’t mean the arguments, tears and recriminations that usually go hand in hand with the festive season. This is the story of two clashing families, brought together by the need to help the Buchanan’s seriously ill daughter, Izzy. The matriarch, Annabel, was adopted and so needs to find her own biological parents to see if Izzy can be saved. It sounds like a tear-jerker but it’s a warm and fuzzy one for Christmas.
THE ESCAPE PLAN: ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ by Elizabeth Gilbert If all else fails and you really can’t stand your in-laws, or even your husband for any amount of time past Boxing Day, then why not just escape from it all? At 3am, Elizabeth’s seemingly perfect life is keeping her up and making her depressed. So, she ups sticks and heads off in pursuit of happiness. Her travels take her to Italy, India and then on to Bali, finding food for her soul and her belly along the way. It’s the perfect antidote to all that forced happiness and fun.

Fruit Planting
The garden may be quieter than usual at this time of year, and certainly not likely to be yielding vast quantities of crops, but this near dormant time is perfect for planting fruit. by Pippa Greenwood
Y
ou can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, training them to espaliers (so that they have several sets of horizontal arms), cordons (as single main stems grown at an angle), fans (with their branches trained in to a fan shape) or as stepovers, (trained so that they make a neat edging for a bed or border about 45cm or so above ground level). You could also use a fruit tree to create a decorative and later a wonderfully productive arch. At this time of year fruit trees are great value because they are sold ‘bare root’, lifted from a field and not container grown. I find these establish particularly well and because you usually obtain them from a specialist supplier or nursery, the range of varieties available is second to none. You can either buy one year old ‘maidens’ and train these yourself, or if you want to save time, you can often buy trained or part trained forms. When you are choosing fruit trees it’s essential to get them
on the right rootstock as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. Apples are particularly complicated, but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing but somewhat tricky M27 - but beware weak varieties or any tree grown on this rootstock in a poor soil as it may well fail. For bush, cordon, espaliers and half-standard try the easier to look after dwarfing rootstock M26 and for a cordon or espalier on a poor soil, for arches and for bush trees try the semi-dwarfing MM106. You will need to choose the varieties you grow so that they can pollinate each other (if there is no suitable pollinator in the vicinity you will not get fruit) and on the basis of the taste and texture of the fruit and how well it stores and so forth. If you have space, it is good to grow apples for cooking as well as eating, or look out for those described as ‘dual purpose’, meaning they make
very passable cookers as well as dessert apples. As well as tree fruits such as apples, pears and maybe even a medlar or a plum or gorgeous gage, you could also consider some delicious bush fruits. The great thing about these is that they take up even less space and again can often be trained into wacky shapes such as fan-trained or standard bushes, making them all the more ornamental and easier to fit into the smaller garden. Then there are raspberries on my rather heavy and very alkaline soil I tend to stick to the autumn fruiting varieties such as Autumn Bliss and Joan J, but on freer draining and acidic soils you can try some of the more numerous summer fruiters too. Bare root fruit trees, bushes and canes are generally available from about November through until early March, depending on the weather, so don’t delay, start ordering or better still, planting, today.

taff at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest near Ringwood are celebrating after the Park received a Silver Award in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year category at the 2014 Dorset Tourism Awards. The Gold Award went to Bovington Tank Museum at a gala presentation ceremony at the Tank Museum on 16 October. This is the first time that Moors Valley has entered a tourism awards scheme of this type and the staff were genuinely delighted that

their hard work throughout the year had been formally recognised. As well as a visitor centre, restaurant, trails and picnic areas, Moors Valley runs a full programme of activities and events. The Park is also home to the Moors Valley Railway, 18-hole golf course, and Go Ape Tree Top Adventure and Junior Tree Top Adventure. It is the third most-visited country park in the UK with around 800,000 people using its facilities every year.

s Ken the oldest railway guard in the country? Ken Clay, a volunteer guard on the Moors Valley Railway, is probably the oldest railway guard in the country. Ken, who crewed Lancaster bombers in WW2, will celebrate his 90th birthday on 26 October. He lives in Ferndown. The steam railway at Moors Valley is the south’s longest fully signalled narrow-gauge railway, with 17 steam engines and two diesels. Ken has been helping the railway’s many visitors and keeping a watchful eye on all the trains there for over 20 years, since he retired from the local Electricity Board. Jim Haylock, the Railway’s owner says that Ken has no intention of putting away his peaked cap any time soon. “Ken is part of the Park,” said Jim. “I believe his father reached the ripe old age of 97, so we hope he’ll still be here with us to celebrate his 100th birthday.” The Moors Valley Railway is now open at weekends and Dorset school holidays from 10.45am – 4.30pm. Hear better and enjoy family time this Christmas
C
hristmas can be a particularly difficult time for those who have a hearing loss. Not understanding what is being said in a busy or noisy environment can be isolating and make it very difficult to join in family conversation. What are the signs of hearing loss? • Do other people seem to mumble rather than speak clearly to you?
• Do people often have to repeat things for you before you understand what they say? • Do you have difficulty understanding what is being said in noisy places, such as pubs or restaurants, even though other people manage to have conversations? • When you are talking to people in a group, is it hard to keep up with the conversation? • Do you find it tiring to listen to conversations because you have to concentrate hard?
• Do other people think your television or music is too loud but you cannot hear it properly if they turn it down? If you experience any of these situations, you may have a hearing loss. The truth is that living life to the fullest includes hearing well. If you’re not hearing all that you should, Clarity Hearing Solutions can help you take that most important step in reconnecting with your world. Call them today on (01202) 820638 to arrange a free consultation.

Pintail flying
16
T he Blashford Bulletin Things to look out for in the coming months at the Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve, Ibsley.
A
s the winter progresses, the lakes are continuing to fill up with ducks and the numbers will tend to peak now in December. Even if you are a beginner to bird watching there is nothing quite like sitting in a bird hide and watching ducks peacefully feeding on the lake with the occasional squabble. As a duck watcher you can start to sort out the different species by observing how they feed.
The pintail, a duck with a long neck and as the Wigeon n a m e by Bob Chapman suggests a long tail too, is a dabbling duck. It feeds by dabbling its beak in the water sifting Tufted duck drake out plants and insects. Another dabbler is the wigeon which feeds on aquatic Goosander drakes plants and it can also be seen out of the water grazing the grass on the banks. As you sit in the hides listen out for the wigeon’s distinctive whistle which carries well across the lake. The shoveler also dabbles but in a much more entertaining way! They use their huge
spatula like bills to sift the water but at the same time they will often spin round and round in an attempt to create currents in the water which bring the food to them. One of the most conspicuous ducks is the tufted duck. With its striking black and white markings it is easy to pick the males out on the lake. The tufted duck is a diving duck which means you will see it diving down in to the water to catch its dinner. The goosander also dives down in to the water and is a member of the sawbill family, named after the serrated edge to its bill which helps it to catch fish. Away from the water and into the woodland bird watching continues to be enjoyable as the bare trees create less places to hide. One bird that is more easily seen here than in other woods is the treecreeper. A small brown bird with a striking white tummy and curved pointy beak could be mistaken for a mouse as it moves up the trunks of trees with small hops in search of insects and spiders. The woodland hide is always busy with wildlife as birds flock to the feeders for an easy meal. Winter visitors to look out for include siskin, redpoll and brambling. Other regular visitors include greenfinch, goldfinch, nuthatch, great spotted woodpecker, blue tits and great tits. We will be running a number of bird watching walks over the winter so please check out our website for dates and times. Of course Blashford Lakes isn’t just brilliant for birds. As we

move in to the New Year the first flowers of the year will start to appear. Small patches Scarlet elf caps of snowdrops can be seen along the river and the first fungi of the year will also be starting to show. The scarlet elf cup feeds on dead wood and thrives in our wet woodland habitats. As the name suggests it is a bright red cup shaped fungus creating a welcoming splash of colour amongst the leaf litter. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Redpoll Sembcorp Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local Siskin wildlife and inspire people. PHEV - An Electric Shock
D
we knew there was even more to come. With typical thoughtfulness, the PHEV arrived, a variant of the Outlander using a petrol-electric hybrid power train which can be re-charged very cheaply off your domestic power socket. Not exactly ground-breaking? Think again.
complex, and needs a re-think. The diesel Outlander has a third row of seats, but with typical thoughtfulness on the PHEV the traction batteries are under-floor where the 3rd row seats should have been, preserving the loadcarrying volume but limiting us to 5 passengers.
The innovation is not so much the design as in its application. Outlander PHEV can do 25-45 miles on electricity alone without use of the petrol engine, or if run solely on the petrol engine will better 35mpg. Used in ‘normal’ mode the laboratory-proven economy is 148mpg with emissions of only 45grammes. It can be recharged at home for approximately half the cost of electricity generated within the car. Impossible, but true and represents a killer financial proposition for fleet users and others seeking to almost eliminate taxation, BIK and so on.
On the road, acceleration is dynamic at all speeds in ‘normal’ mode. The engine cuts in and out as required seamlessly - you don’t hear it at all. For the nerds among us, there are a number of large buttons at our fingertips which modify the power modes so you can for instance run in battery-only or engine-only mode, use the engine for charging only, and so on. Remarkable flexibility when you need it – or simply if you want to interfere with ‘normal’ mode.
Enter the Outlander, a large 4x4 Crossover. We previously tested the diesel and were Yes, but what’s it really like? A delighted with a car which did walk-round exhibits a somewhat the job quietly and very well, but understated car with an upperclass style, clearly capable of mixing it on the rough, but smart and proud enough to enter the valet-parking lane at the Ritz. Inside, general simplicity and black leather just oozes quality. Only the Sat-nav is clunky and
With typical thoroughness, Mitsubishi tell us that if our journeys are up to 106 miles, the PHEV will be economical and eco-friendly. Above that mileage, choose the less complex diesel. And if you think all this comes at a silly price, think again! Their master-stroke is a tiny purchase premium of about £2,000 over the diesel, truly a bargain. Let this be our secret, and just form an orderly queue behind me please.
Mike's Motors
Their range of cars is unusually incomplete. When they don’t feel they have something worthwhile to offer, they just don’t make it. I think this approach is admirable. Yet when they DO design a car, it does tend to be either an outright winner, or develop a faithful cult of followers. Take their Mirage city car which is impossibly light, highly economical, and a hoot to drive. Or their full electric MiEV which despite looking like it has been squashed sideways, sells as fast as they can get batteries. Motorsport? The Lancer Evo series swept their competitors off the road for years. The L200 Utility suits tradesmen and adventurers the world over, while the beefy Shogun 4x4 is the Public service car of choice. And all these cars show real personality.
By Mike Wattam
espite very seldom making cutting-edge cars, Mitsubishi has remained successful over the years as a designer and producer of well-engineered cars acceptable both to city folk, and to those who daily battle the worst the Great Outdoors can throw at them. At Car Exhibitions we are unlikely to see much in the way of glossy vehicles. Instead they choose to display forests, plants and nature with the back-drop being an eco-house electrically coupled to one of their cars to inform us of their current environmental research. All very tree-huggy.

Some Like It Hot Technology taking the expense out of heating your home
W
ith summer a rapidly fading memory it’s likely that you’ve had the central heating on for weeks or even months. With energy prices constantly increasing, a few simple bits of kit can make a huge difference to your outgoings. One of the simplest changes you can make is to replace
Honeywell Homexpert replacement heating programmer
your boiler’s old timer with a modern digital programmer, such as Siemens’ RWB29. This £45 device enables you to set different times for weekdays and weekends, and you can set three different heating times per day. Installing it and any similar programmer isn’t a particularly difficult job and the extra control it offers can help reduce your heating bills. Another option is to invest in thermostatic radiator valves, or TRVs for short. With prices starting at around £7, TRVs are simple to fit and enable you to set different
Thermostatic radiator valve
temperatures in different rooms, so for example you
might set the bedrooms to be several degrees cooler than the living room. You can even get digital ones such as the Terrier i-temp i30, which enables you to set up to 6 different temperature settings per day - handy if the room’s temperature is subject to outside factors such as late afternoon sunshine. For many of us our heating systems are fairly low tech, but that’s changing with the arrival of systems such as British Gas’s Hive. Hive connects your boiler to your broadband, and that means you can control it with a smartphone app. You might override the heating settings because you’re coming home later than expected, keep an eye on your daily energy use, or just show off by turning the heating on and off when
British Gas Hive smart thermostat
you’re at work. British Gas reckons that the £199 Hive will pay for itself very quickly, offering savings of up to £150 a year on your energy bills, and it’s compatible with 99% of the UK’s gas boilers. One of the most advanced home energy gadgets is the Nest learning thermostat, which is now owned by Google. The £249 device isn’t just a good looking thermostat; it’s a computer that learns your everyday activities and sets the heating to suit - and it knows when you’re out, lowering the heating accordingly. Once
again the big selling point here is reduced energy bills, and Nest has proved so successful at doing that in
Nest learning thermostat
America that some US energy companies are giving them away free to their customers to help keep their bills down (and the customers loyal). A thermostat is hardly the most exciting sounding gadget, but Nest has big ideas: Google has teamed up with the likes of MercedesBenz and fitness gadget maker Jawbone, remote control firm Logitech and garage door firm Chamberlain to make Nest compatible with their products. A Mercedes car knows what time you’ll be home and can alert the thermostat accordingly; a Jawbone fitness tracker can tell when you’re waking up and can turn the heating up automatically; all-in-one remotes can get all your entertainment gadgets ready for a movie while dropping the temperature to make the thriller even more chilling. It won’t be long before Google adds voice control to the mix, and it’s clear that it sees Nest as the centre of a much wider home automation system. It’s hot stuff already! By Gary Marshall

Ringwood concern over Ebola Crisis.
ingwood Rotary are now raising funds to develop an isolation unit at the Children’s Clinic in Bo, Sierra Leone. Two Ringwood Rotarians, Caroline Millman and Alistair Stokes were in Sierra Leone earlier this year. They were visiting the town of Bo to develop a project in liaison with Ringwood based Tools for Self Reliance, Bo Rotary Club and Craftshare. The project was to establish a Microcredit scheme for those who had completed their training in a range of craft areas. Ringwood is not the only local Rotary Club to have established links with the Rotary Club of Bo as Bournemouth East Cliff Rotary Club together with an Australian Club have already built and equipped a children’s clinic in Bo. But now that the EBOLA VIRUS has struck, the Clubs have gone into emergency mode. Will you help us help them? We want to help the people of Bo in Sierra Leone as they
struggle with this devastating disease. We have already built good contacts with the Rotarians there and the Craftshare trainers but their needs are more pressing than the project we were planning. The clinic has space for a significant isolation unit and you can help. Please give generously to help some of the people of West Africa. Your money will go to help a population where some already know of Ringwood and have met local Rotarians. All funds donated will be administered through the Rotary movement so overheads are very minimal. There will be collection points in Lunns Newsagents, Millers Antiques and HSBC OR you can subscribe direct by paying money into the following account:Rotary Club of Ringwood Charity Fund Sort Code 40-38-21 Account No. 61375237 Ref: Ebola

The Christmas Truce by Alison Runham German soldiers of the 134th Saxon Regiment and British soldiers of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment meet in no man’s land, December 26
C
hristmas Eve 1914. The Western Front. Weeks of rain have ended and mud is becoming ice. Despite calls for a Christmas ceasefire, fighting has continued throughout December, although today it seems half-hearted in many places. Staff Sergeant Clement Barker is in his trench with his comrades. Across No Man’s Land, the Germans are decorating tiny trees sent from home with candles as they sing Stille Nacht (Silent Night). “The trenches were a blaze of Christmas trees,” one Tommy recalled, “and our sentries were regaled for hours with traditional Christmas songs.” In some places, English troops decide that they “ought to retaliate in some way.” “So we sang The First Noël... they all began clapping; and then they struck up another favourite of theirs, O Tannenbaum.” At Barker’s trench, a German soldier appears. “He said that if (we) did not fire, they wouldn’t in the morning,” Barker wrote later. Next morning, Barker’s men cautiously venture out to retrieve and bury their dead. No shots are fired. Soon they’re shaking hands with the Germans and exchanging gifts, and then “a football is kicked out of our trenches, and Germans and English
play football.” Henry Williamson, who later wrote Tarka the Otter, also recalled football matches, but behind German lines; if British and German troops played together, he made no mention of it. However, despite the myths surrounding Truce matches between both sides, some are well-documented in letters. Two soldiers of the 6th Cheshires described a huge, free-for-all match in Wulverghem, Belgium, where No Man’s Land was less damaged by shell fire. Williamson recalled the Germans singing Silent Night, too, before inviting the English closer. His unit suspected a trap. “We crept out... expecting any moment to fall flat with the machine guns opening up. And nothing happened.” Both sides were soon exchanging gifts and greetings, and similar scenes were occurring at many points along the Front. Cigarettes, rations, uniform buttons and even addresses were exchanged. One English trench received a German chocolate cake, together with a ceasefire request and an invitation to an impromptu concert. “Just think,” wrote one soldier to his family, “while you were eating turkey I was talking and shaking hands with the very men I had been trying to kill a few hours before!”
The truce at Williamson’s position held for four days before orders arrived to end fraternisation, while the Germans were warned to expect visits from senior officers; they sent a message across, explaining that they would have to fire their machine guns, but would fire high to avoid hitting anyone. For Barker, peace lasted a little longer too. “Night came and still no shots. Boxing day the same, and has remained so up to now,” he wrote a few days later. But gradually fighting resumed. Captain J.C. Dunn’s account of resuming hostilities is poignant: “I fired three shots in the air and put up a flag with “Merry Christmas” on it, and I climbed on the parapet...[the Germans] put up a sheet with “Thank you” on it, and the German Captain appeared... We both bowed and saluted... he fired two shots in the air, and the War was on again.” Both truces (and football games) had occurred in earlier wars. So what makes the 1914 Christmas Truce especially memorable? Perhaps because in a war that cost over 10 million lives, it was, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said, “one human episode amid all the atrocities.”

Ringwood Day Nursery
ew flexibility is being offered at Ringwood Day Nursery following discussions with our existing parents. From November 2014, we are opening at 07.30hrs for parents that need that extra time to get to work. These earlier starts have limited availability and are subject to separate T&C. In addition, from January 2015 we are able to offer Stretch Funding for the parents in receipt of 2 Year Old Funding and 3 Year Old Early Education Grant. This allows for parents to spread their funding over 51 weeks and keep their children at nursery during the whole year, making the hassle of finding child care during half terms a thing of the past if you use Ringwood Day Nursery!
The enclosed outdoor play area dedicated to the youngest children has an all weather surface allowing children to explore the outdoor environment all year round. The nursery provides all-in-one wet weather suits, sun hats and sun cream, to ensure our outdoor area is used throughout the year.
Ringwood Day Nursery is located on a quiet tree lined lane in Ringwood, just off Southampton Road. Housed in a lovely Victorian building giving a real home from home feel, we offer inspirational care for children aged from 3 months to 5 years by a team of qualified and experienced staff, who provide the best care, the most fun and fantastic food.
allowing us to continue to focus on the individual needs and interests of each child. All our children enjoy wonderful varied days where they have opportunities to enjoy role play, messy play, discovery, learning, physical development but most of all FUN.
We have a dedicated baby unit for the youngest children aged up to 24 months with a separate entrance with video entry system. The pace of each day in our baby room is entirely tuned in to the individual developmental needs of each baby and their sleeping and feeding requirements. The staff that care for the babies are dedicated and provide a homely environment full of love and affection and plenty of cuddles. We provide a separate sleep room to allow children to maintain their normal resting routines.
The nursery boasts two further outdoor play areas. One supports physical development with a climbing frame and equipment such as cars and bikes while the other grassed area is more focused on crafts, exploration and investigation and features a story telling area. As the children grow they move through the nursery’s three further playrooms which provide age appropriate care and education,
As children prepare for the transition to school we ensure strong links are established and maintained with local schools, with visits from Reception teachers and trips with the children to their new schools. We want to ensure that the next step is just like moving rooms within the setting. We are enrolling now for immediate starts with limited availability and taking future bookings for later in the year and into 2015. Call 01425 470709 to arrange a viewing to reserve a place for your child or visit our website www.ringwooddaynursery.com for more details and the opportunity to take an inside Google tour of our Nursery.

These are doctors who volunteer on cars and also fly with the air ambulance, bringing hospital level care to critically ill or injured patients on scene. “We truly enjoyed the walk,” says Kim, “we were doing the Test Way which is organized by Romsey Rotary – the distance was like walking from Fordingbridge to Salisbury, but all in the country so very pretty! again. We said it at the start and more importantly at the finish!” Dog Bella is yet to comment!
Two Bridges Care Group
t the recent meeting of the Two Bridges Care Group, associated with the Good Neighbours Support Service of Hampshire it was decided to instigate a project to recruit more volunteer drivers, more project coordinators and more committee members. (For instance, a treasurer is urgently required.) The Two Bridges Care Group offers voluntary services to those without access to
transport and/or health problems. It will provide drivers to and from medical appointments, and endeavour to help with other related issues and problems. Finance Three Easy Ways to Save Money This Winter By Ann Haldon
F
uel bills are a major worry for all of us in winter. Prices go up but the need to stay warm remains, and it’s not just heating the house that’s the problem. Skyrocketing costs of petrol and food drain your finances on a weekly basis, but there is a little cheer on the horizon. Below are three ways to help you make ends meet this winter. All are easy to implement, they just take a little thought and planning, so make a start now before the bad winter weather strikes. Reduce energy consumption According to the Energy Saving Trust, savings of around £300 a year can be made using cavity wall and loft insulation in an average semidetached house. At the time of writing, British Gas offers free or subsidised loft and cavity wall insulation to eligible homeowners on mainland Britain. Even small measures make a big difference though, the result being a warmer home and reduced bills: Draught excluders - It’s surprising how much heat is lost through small gaps under doors and around windows – not something you’d always notice day to day. Energy monitors - These monitors let you know how much energy each appliance consumes. Most people quickly change their habits once they see the spikes in energy usage recorded by the
monitor. Lighting - This is one of the easiest areas in which to reduce consumption. Energysaving light bulbs, external light sensors, and switching off lights when not in use all help to keep down costs. Appliances - Freezers work more efficiently when full, as do ovens. Not only that, but you’ll save money buying and cooking food in bulk. Halve grocery bills A little planning goes a long way when it comes to shopping. Pre-prepared menus and shopping lists are easy ways to reduce waste as well as save money. The ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ website has some useful tips in this respect, and offers advice for saving money on food. The main message is buy and cook in bulk. Cooking becomes less of a chore when you can just grab a home-cooked meal out of the freezer several nights a week. Late Sunday afternoon shopping trips are a revelation, when incredible deals can be found in the ‘reduced’ aisle if you time it right. This alone saves a huge amount of money over the course of a year. Cooking from scratch, making your own bread, home brew and wine all save money, and if results are good you can always give away your goodies as Christmas presents. Switch suppliers If you’ve never switched gas and electricity suppliers before, you could be in for a pleasant surprise. The biggest
savings of around 5%-10% can be made when you manage your own account online and pay by direct debit. Suppliers like their customers to pay by direct debit as there’s less likelihood of default. It keeps their credit control costs down, and they earn interest on any overpayments you make during the summer months. To make sure you get the best deal: • Always read your own meter – don’t rely on an estimate from your provider • Don’t assume that dual fuel is always the cheapest way to buy • Use a price comparison website to find the best deals • Avoid pre-payment meters – the choice of tariffs available is very limited Saving money is often about changing your habits. Things like unplugging appliances and turning off lights are simple to do, and can save you hundreds of pounds over the course of a year. http://www.energysavingtrust. org.uk/Insulation/Roof-and-loftinsulation http://www.energysavingtrust. org.uk/Insulation/Cavity-wallinsulation http://www.britishgas.co.uk/ products-and-services/energysaving/home-insulation/freeinsulation.html http://www.energysavingtrust. org.uk/Electricity/Productsand-appliances#computer http://england. lovefoodhatewaste.com/

Portrait of a Dorset Artist Renowned Dorset artist Sean Curley has lived in the county since he was 14 years old when his family relocated to the area from Southport, Merseyside, after his father’s job as a travel agent brought him here. “It’s a great part of the country,” says Sean, who lives in Poole. “I used to paint West Bay every week; it’s a good little harbour - much better than those in neighbouring counties.” This self taught oil painter has sold a great many paintings in little more than a decade, which has been made possible by working with galleries across the UK, Ireland and even in Portugal. Art lovers are quite prepared to travel to buy Sean’s paintings. “I sold my painting of Poole Harbour to someone in Edinburgh,” he recalls. “The buyer holidays in Dorset and his brother lives here so he sent his brother to buy the painting and he took it back up to Edinburgh for him, which couldn’t have been very easy because it was 4ft x 2.5ft!” His largest painting is an 8ft x 3ft triptych and the smallest measures just 6 inches x 4 inches. His distinctive work includes Poole and Weymouth. But Sean can also be found studying the smallest of flowers through to landscapes. Travel inspires him and he regularly exhibits with award winning Scottish sculptor Philip Jackson. Being a keen guitarist has sometimes complicated Sean’s life. “Both pursuits are creative and they do get in each others way on occasions. I have been offered the chance to play a lot more. I haven’t turned it down but there is a balance to be had. I stopped playing in bands for nine years 15 years ago because my paintings were selling so well that there was not time to do both.” www.seancurleyfineart.co.uk

Beauty Professional MakeUp Secrets: How to Get a Perfect Pout
With the help of a few simple make-up tools and techniques it’s easy to transform your lips into the pout you’ve always wanted. Thin Lips Thin lips are a big beauty concern for many women especially as they age. That’s because over the years, our lips lose their plumpness and become visibly thinner. Fortunately there’s plenty that can be done to add some volume, without having to resort to fillers. Choose lipsticks in light shades and always opt for a glossy finish. Lighter colours work to make lips look bigger by bringing that area of your face forward, whereas darker shades have the opposite effect by pushing it back. Light-reflecting pigments in glosses and lipsticks add instant fullness to thin lips unlike matte formulations that make the lips look flat. A creamy lip liner, in a natural pale hue is an essential tool
when makingup thin lips. Warm the pencil in your hands before lining your lips just slightly outside their natural line and bring the liner as far down to the corners of your mouth as you can whilst still keeping it looking perfectly natural. Particularly emphasise your cupid’s bow and the middle of your bottom lip. Using a lip brush, neatly fill in your lips with your chosen lipstick. Add a dab of gloss to the centre of your bottom lip and highlight your cupid’s bow by adding a touch of shimmer highlighter - powder, cream or pencil varieties will all do the job. Uneven Lips If your bottom lip is fuller than your top, then your lips can look uneven - but it’s easy to balance things out with wellapplied lipstick. Choose a lip liner in a shade that matches the lipstick you are going to use and apply it to your cupid’s bow - at the centre of your top lip. Don’t be tempted to extend the line all the way down because you only want definition in the centre. Cover your bottom lip with a dot of concealer or foundation
- this makes it easier to correct the shape - then line the centre of your bottom lip slightly above the natural line and softly extend the line outwards, but not all the way to the corner of your mouth. Bring the lip liner on to your bottom lip and lightly fill it in - the aim is to create a matte finish so that your bottom lip appears less prominent. Then, using a lip brush, fill in your top lip with the lipstick that matches your liner. Draw attention to your top lip and create a perfect finish by adding a touch of gloss to the centre of your top lip. Narrow Mouth If your mouth is small and narrow it can look out of proportion compared to your other facial features. A little lip liner and lipstick can easily ‘extend’ the mouth though. Find a lip liner that matches the natural colour of your lips as closely as possible, then line the outer corners of your mouth by using light, feathery strokes. Bring the line up and round, over your cupid’s bow but make sure the line isn’t as strong as the one on the corners of your lips, because emphasising the corners of the mouth will have an elongating effect. Choose a neutral coloured lipstick in a creamy or satiny finish - it’s important to stick to lighter shades, as darker hues will make your lips appear smaller. By Helen Taylor

Cake & Bake Panforte de Siena This sweetmeat is a traditional Italian Christmas treat packed with nuts, figs, honey and warming spices. It can be made a couple of weeks before Christmas just wrap well in greaseproof paper and store in an airtight container.
Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •
150g whole blanched almonds 125g pistachio nuts 175g dried figs, chopped Grated zest of 1 orange 75g plain flour 2 tbsp cocoa powder 2 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground cloves 115g caster sugar 175g runny honey Icing sugar, for dusting
TIP
You can vary the fruits and nuts used in this recipe - replace the figs with chopped candied peel, dried apricots or glace pineapple and instead of pistachios try toasted hazelnuts.
Makes 25 squares - ready in 1½ hours, plus cooling.
1. Preheat the oven to 150°C/130°C fan/gas 2. Grease a deep 18cm square tin and line the base with baking parchment. Toast the almonds under a medium grill until just golden then roughly chop. Mix in a bowl with the pistachios, figs and orange zest. 2. Sift over the flour and cocoa powder and stir well then stir in the cinnamon and ground cloves. Set aside. 3. Put the caster sugar and honey in a heavybased pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil then let the syrup bubble gently for about 5 minutes, without stirring the mixture, until it begins to thicken. 4. Remove the pan from the heat and quickly add the nut and flour mixture stirring well with a wooden spoon. Spoon into the prepared tin and smooth the surface using the back of a damp spoon. 5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour then remove the cake from the oven and leave in the tin until completely cold. Remove the cake from the tin, peel off the lining paper and dust thickly with icing sugar. Use a sharp knife to cut into squares to serve.

Visit to Fordingbridge’s twin town Vimoutiers.
A
long with 6 other representatives from Fordingbridge, Mayor Malcolm Connelly and his wife visited its twin town of Vimoutiers in Normandy for their annual “Foire de la Pomme” (Apple Fair). The Twinning Association had a stand in the exhibition hall showcasing Fordingbridge together with products made in Fordingbridge. All were invited to attend various official ceremonies organised by the Town Council, where guests included the local MP, the local Senateur and other officials representing the Département and agricultural organisations of France. Representatives from Vimoutiers’ other twin towns Chatelet in Belgium and Sontra in Germany were also present, and for the first time, the Mayors of all 3 twinned towns and their respective Twinning Committee Chairmen were present. The carnival procession on the Sunday afternoon was attended by the largest audience for many years, and the theme of the carnival
was ‘The Horse’, an important icon, both for Normandy and for the New Forest. Vimoutiers’ Twinning Committee entered a float with the 4 twinned town-mayors sitting proudly in place: Four Mayors in one carnival! Fortunately, the weather was warm and sunny, much warmer than what would normally be expected for the time of year. The Fordingbridge Twinning Association’s next event will be a Dinner with entertainment provided by “Hog the Limelight”, entitled ‘Ooh La La!’ It will take place at Fordingbridge Town Hall on Friday evening 5th December. An evening of musical entertainment, with a French flavour, and a hot 2 course meal will be included. Tickets are £15 for Twinning Association members, and £17.50 for non-members. So why not join? Luang Prabang
I
The Ancient Capital of Laos
n the lush northern hills of Laos, the old city of Luang Prabang is a delightful maze of pristine alleyways festooned in potted plants and bougainvillaea. The fragrance of frangipani lingers under the blue sky, mingling with the aroma of French baguettes and freshly-brewed coffee. Heavy traffic is banned from the historic centre where pedestrians and cyclists wander through the lanes. Time seems to stand still.
bungalows and mansions. Often converted into guest houses, the latter boast stylish verandahs and pastelhued façades framed by lofty palm trees. Here and there, a traditional bamboo hut peeps through the greenery while a wooden house on stilts mirrors its amber-coloured walls in a lily pond. Buddhist flags flutter in the breeze and every morning at 6.00, drums beat in the temples to announce the start of the alms procession.
Tucked on a scenic peninsula, Luang Prabang nestles at the confluence of the Mekong, all silvery waters dotted with boats and islands, and the emerald green river Khan, spanned by bouncy bamboo bridges washed away every year during the monsoon. Rustic hotels and quaint al fresco restaurants line the left bank where spirit houses ensure good luck. Across the water, tiny allotments tumble down the steep slopes, crickets sing in the trees and myriad frogs join in the chorus at night.
Even before the first rays of the sun light up the river Khan, the people of Luang Prabang line the main street, heads bowed, holding offerings of sticky rice, bananas, biscuits and more. For the monks, this is an act of humility, for the faithful an opportunity to share food and earn merits. Barefoot and clad in saffron robes, hundreds of monks hurry past in single file, taking only what they need and leaving plenty for families to take home. A few tourists join in but it is a dignified affair full of spiritual vibes.
In 1995, Luang Prabang was awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO for its natural sites, including the nearby Kuang Si waterfalls and the Buddha caves of Pak Ou, and its finely restored architecture, from gilded temples to colonial

of the complex, a stone lion guards the steps leading down to the Mekong where royalty used to land, paying respect in the temple before heading for their palace. Right across town, tucked among flowering trees, the monasteries offer wonderful oases of peace sprinkled with shrines, chapels and stupas. All is quiet except when the haunting chant of evening prayers rises all around. The former Royal Palace is now a museum, reached along a regal avenue of palms and filled with memorabilia. It was built to replace a wooden palace in the early 20th century, Lao style with a French touch. The gates close late afternoon then it’s time for the night market to set up its stalls along the street, brimming with silk scarves, tribal blankets, ceramics, bamboo lamps, silver and ethnic bags. It’s a great place to sample the local delicacies, from Lao noodles to barbecued fish and fried river moss. Meanwhile, locals and visitors gather on the Phusi Hill to enjoy the most fabulous views over the peninsula, the river Khan and the legendary Mekong turning all shades of gold in the setting sun.
