Can You Help Ringwood Arts Centre make a Meaningful Start?
n 7th October 2016, Ringwood Arts Centre announced their Meaningful Start Appeal, in a bid to raise £55,000 to take the next step to making the Centre a reality! Ringwood Arts Centre is a new project under the leadership of Greyfriars and RMDS to build a multi-purpose community venue for the whole town to enjoy. Situated at Greyfriars Community Centre, the new building will include a 290 seat theatre and widescreen cinema, a sports hall with sprung floor, space
for conferences, large dinners and corporate events, a variety of meeting spaces, an art studio, exhibition spaces, a courtyard area for outdoor events and a café and bar Ringwood Arts Centre is now at a pivotal point in its life. Planning permission for the multi-use community hall, cinema and theatre will expire in February 2017 unless a ‘Meaningful Start’ is made on the project. They are so close to making this next step… but they need your help! So what is a Meaningful Start? Well, in short it is the moment when the first spade goes in to the ground, preserving our planning permission and taking us one step closer to making Ringwood Arts Centre a reality. In our case it has been agreed that this will involve work to the new Greyfriars Car Park,
creating an opening in the listed wall for better access. On top of that, the Meaningful Start requires that all pre-commencement planning conditions are met and completed, and that a ‘Section 106 Agreement’ is complied with. Work on making the opening in the wall is planned to start in December and will be finished in February 2017. This work will not only benefit the Centre once it is built, but many of the members, volunteers and visitors that use Greyfriars now. So far the Appeal has reached an amazing
£10,000 but we are still a long way off reaching our £55,000 goal! Ringwood Arts Centre has come a long way to get to this point, and they hope that the local community will get behind the campaign to bring the project one step closer to reality! You now have a real opportunity to become part of the Centre’s story. If you would like more information on the project and The Meaningful Start Appeal, please visit www.ringwoodartscentre.com/appeal Alternatively, donations can be sent into Ringwood Arts Centre, 44 Christchurch Road, Ringwood BH24 1DW. Please include your name, contact details and Gift Aid eligibility, or download a donation form from the website. All cheques should be made payable to Greyfriars Arts Centre.

Welcome L
December 2016 / January 2017
Contents
Dear Readers,
ooking back through our photographic archives, I was amazed to see that this Christmas edition’s cover photo of the bronze ponies in the Furlong Centre was taken in December 2010! It seems like only yesterday! It also seems like only slightly more than yesterday that I bought Stevie Wonder’s album ‘Innervisions’ in 1973! Again I was amazed at seeing it for sale last week in a large supermarket in Ferndown with many other classic LPs! Our article on page 24 tells us all about the growing popularity of vinyl for collectors so I must get my husband to dig out his old PL12D deck! (All you baby boomers will probably know what this is - or was!) Continuing on the theme of yesterday page 8 tells us
with best wishes,
how yesterday’s Christmas has changed so much to today’s. But despite all the changes to the many festive customs and traditions the emphasis is still on bringing families together and renewing old friendships! And hopefully to prevent you from finding out that the last posting date for your cards to families and friends abroad was yesterday - you can find them all on page 44! When you need a job done or want to treat yourself or a loved one at this time of year AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 50 and save yourself time, fuel and most importantly - money! Finally I would like to wish all my readers and advertisers old and new the very warmest of festive greetings for this Christmas and the New Year.

ROUNDABOUT
ROUNDABOUT RINGWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE & SURROUNDING VILLAGES
NOW and THEN Yvonne’s, 9-11 West Street, Ringwood. About 1921 the Long family moved to another shop in the High Street, which is still remembered with affection by many older Ringwood inhabitants. Sometime afterwards the frontage of the first floor of their former property was dramatically modernised. The two sash windows and the blocked-in window bearing the name West-End House were replaced by three wider casement windows and the two gable windows in the roof were replaced by a single larger one. However the ground floor shop windows, doorways and fascia board remained remarkably unchanged.
c1905
O
ne hundred years ago this property in West Street, then known as West-End House, was occupied by James Richard Long, his wife Emily and their three children Charles, Sidney and Emily. It is possibly two of these children who are pictured standing in the doorways in the old photograph c1905.
By 1939, according to the Hampshire Directory, Mrs Doris Rawlinson was running a ladies hairdressing business on the premises. From then onwards the property has continued to be a hairdressing salon. The present owner has been styling hair there since 1980. Originally known as Yvondres, the salon is now simply called Yvonne’s, after its dedicated owner.
According to the 1901 and 1911 censuses James Long was a self-employed basket maker. However, judging by the displays in his shop windows, he seems to have sold a variety of other goods, particularly a large range of hoops, which were often used as a popular toy at that time. To the left of the old photograph can be seen the archway of the New Inn. This well-known inn was demolished c1960 and replaced by the present block of shops and offices called New House.

Ring Out The Old, Ring In The New. The changing face of Christmas and New Year celebrations by Kate McLelland
I
magine you had been lost on a desert island for forty years, and returned just in time to celebrate Christmas and New Year. While at first glance the celebrations might look much the same, dig a little deeper and you’ll find that much has changed since you were away. Our old festive traditions are constantly evolving, but recently the pace of change has quickened: traditions that seemed set in stone almost half a century ago are now rarely celebrated in many parts of the UK.
Christmas pudding Christmas puddings are still popular, but this heavy, fruitladen treat is beginning to fall out of favour. Many of us now prefer ice cream-based desserts, trifles, or frankly, anything made with chocolate. You may remember finding a sixpence or a silver charm inside your slice of Christmas pudding. This tradition dates back to the early 13th century, when a Twelfth Night Cake was eaten on the final night of the Christmas celebrations. A dried pea, a silver ring or small crown was included in the cake mixture and whoever found it became ‘king’ or ‘queen’ for the night. mistletoe It’s becoming harder and
harder to find mistletoe in the shops nowadays, and this suggests that the tradition of hanging a mistletoe bough inside the house - as an encouragement for couples to steal a kiss beneath it - is now dying out.
bread, salt, a coin or a drink. The “First Footer” was the first person to step over the threshold after midnight, and it was believed that his actions would bring good fortune to the household in the year to come.
Historians believe that the custom originated in Scandinavia, where on special occasions the tip of a tree would be hung above the spot where hosts would greet their guests.
The origin of first footing can be traced to Greece, where a tradition known as pothariko includes giving first footers food or money to keep evil at bay.
Carol singers Gone is the time when you would answer the door to a group of well-practised carol singers belting out “Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful” in three-part harmony. These days it’s more likely that you’ll open the door to half a verse of ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas”, sung off-key by hopeful teenagers rattling a donation tin. Carols were originally songs sung during community events such as harvest celebrations. It was only later that they began to be sung in church, and were specifically associated with Christmas. First Footing This odd New Year tradition called for a dark, male stranger to enter the house on or after the stroke of midnight, carrying a piece of coal,
Christmas Cards While many of us still spend hours writing cards, licking envelopes and sticking stamps, the younger generation sends Christmas card mail-outs with a single click. The first Christmas cards were created in Victorian times, when fast developing railway networks made it easier and cheaper to send messages. It’s interesting to note that email is now popular for broadly the same reasons! Some of our festive traditions may have changed but our love of Christmas and New Year lives on. The emphasis on renewing old friendships and bringing families together makes it likely that these celebrations will remain popular for many thousands of years to come.

R & F Lions Club President welcomes new Head Teacher to Ringwood.
T
he President of Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club, Yorky Tuke is pictured below presenting the new Head Teacher at Ringwood School, Mrs Leanne Symonds, with the Lions Club Friendship Banner. The club president recently met with Mrs Symonds to welcome her to the school and town and wish her well in her new position at the school.
Canada, Belgium, cementing many international friendships, and learning the importance of being more independent and culturally tolerant of other nations.
Ringwood School have forged very close links with R&F Lions Club over the years and many projects have flourished for the benefit of its students as a result of this exciting collaboration. Lions President, Yorky Tuke commented that “The staff and students at Ringwood School have always given our club fantastic support over the years which is very much appreciated”.
A panel of judges will once again be assembled from leaders in our local community to hear formal student presentations in the next Lions Den Competition scheduled for March next year. Teams of students from both Ringwood and Burgate School in Fordingbridge will be competing for a share of the charity money donated by R&F Lions Club to be assigned for their local charitable project. This not only helps develop presentation and public speaking skills but encourages the school to take a much wider and keener interest in their local community.
Under the Lions International Youth Camp & Exchange Program students at the school aged between 16 and 20 are invited to spend up to a month at a lions sponsored international youth camp abroad next summer. Past students from the school attending in 2016 have travelled to Taiwan, Estonia, USA,
In addition, the ten best entries for the 2017 Lions International Peace Poster Competition will be on public display at Lunns Art Store in Ringwood from Monday 21 November.
R&F Lions Club would be interested to hear from anyone interested in finding out more about their activities and can be contacted through their website at www.randflions.org.uk or by telephone on 0845 8335819.

utumn started with a swing at the first club session in October of the Ringwood and Fordingbridge Club for the Blind. Neale Turner a retired psychiatric nurse who is now a professional and very talented musician played to us on his bass guitar with backing tracks to accompany him. His theme was music from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s and he took the mem-
bers down memory lane. Six active members couldn’t resist the invitation to dance and jived or waltzed to the music. It was remarkable how music evokes memories and lifts spirits as witnessed by all present. Top Tech Gadget Gifts For Christmas
T
here’s a very good chance that this year, Santa’s sack will be stuffed with gadgets: from kid-friendly tablets to expensive iPhones, many people’s presents will be of the digital variety. But you don’t need to spend a fortune to get some great gifts. One of the highlights of the shopping calendar is Black Friday, which is a recent American import: the last Friday in November - this year, that’s the 25th of November is when shops offer massive discounts to kick-start the Christmas shopping season. It’s grown to encompass Cyber Monday, the Monday immediately afterwards, and some retailers run an entire week of deals in the run-up to Black Friday weekend. In the last few years UK retailers have got in on the act, and Black Friday is a great source of bargains, especially on electronics from online retailers. Just make sure you use a price checking service to ensure that the bargains you see are genuinely good deals. Some retailers mimic supermarket wine deals, with gadgets priced artificially high in October so they can appear to be terrific bargains in November. Buying for technology fans can be tricky because they often go out and buy the gadgets they want as
Leather laptop sleeve from Etsy.com
soon as they become available. Thank goodness for accessories, then: a leather case for a smartphone or a messenger bag for a laptop makes a great gift, although watch out for “bonded leather”, which is artificially produced and doesn’t wear like real leather. If your intended recipient has young children, a militaryspecification protective case will save many trips to the smartphone or tablet repairer. Sony noise cancelling headphones Headphones are always a good gift, especially now that Apple has dumped the familiar 3.5mm headphone adapter from its latest iPhones, so wireless Bluetooth headphones or headphones that use the Lightning connector will be a big upgrade over the fairly rubbish Apple versions. But this doesn’t only apply to Apple users: most of the headphones that come with phones are dreadful, and in addition to those designed to make music better you can choose from a wide selection of specialist headphones, such as Bose’s QuietComfort noise-cancelling range. We know from experience that noise-cancelling headphones make train, bus and air travel much more relaxing, and while high-end models can cost over £200 it’s quite possible to get noise-cancelling phones from the likes of Sony for less than £20. And don’t forget
wireless Bluetooth speakers too: they’re a great add-on for phones, tablets and laptops, none of which tend to have very good sound systems. It’s usually a good idea to stay away from novelty items - anything hilarious that’s
USB coffee warmer, generic;
designed to plug into a USB port is surely destined for landfill by Boxing Day - and if you can’t think of anything appropriate, vouchers make an excellent present. Amazon vouchers are great for everyone, iTunes vouchers are fantastic presents for anyone with an iPod, iPad or iPhone, Netflix vouchers are good for TV and film buffs, and there are stacks of vouchers for specific retailers. Keep an eye on the newspaper adverts and voucher websites, though: some shops, especially supermarkets, run multiApple buy deals on iTunes vouchers such as gift iTunes vouchers, enabling cards you to save around 20%. Be careful, though, as if a retailer goes out of business it’s very unlikely that the vouchers will be redeemable, so it’s important to stick with well-known firms. A voucher for Dodgy Dave’s Digital Depot might not be the wisest investment.

Viewed From My W indow A small selection of short stories written by Patricia Oliver from Horton near Wimborne, describing the ups and downs of caring for feral cats over the years with photos by J Santana-Martin.
W
Bobby Part 2
e had taken Bobby in as we had been informed that he needed Veterinary care for a large abscess on his back. He was found to be ‘intact’ by the Vet, but was not neutered when under anaesthetic for his abscess as the Vet had not sought my permission, so he was due for another visit for his next operation. I was now concerned that the trust I had built up with him would be undone when I needed to pick him again for his next visit to the Vet but I needn’t have worried, I was allowed to pick him up with no argument and no need for a blanket this time. He did not lash out with his sharp claws and there was no noise of protest. The Vet was concerned that his wound had not healed as well as it should so I was instructed to give him 2 antibiotic pills every morning for seven days. On his return he was desperate for food. I had allowed him plenty of food the day before, but had stopped all food overnight so he was now very hungry. This cat eats every bowl of food as if it would be his last meal, so now he had to catch up! He was pleased to see me and I was again able to pick him up and place him into the large cage without incident. I stroked him and rubbed him and gave him a kiss and much to my surprise, he purred in appreciation! He had not taken a grudge against me for his latest visit to the Vet, he was happy to be home and to see a friendly face. He did not want me to leave him so I stayed with him until he seemed settled. It was only 10 days since he came to us, an abandoned, timid, defensive, suffering and no doubt a scared little cat, but now he was purring and begging to be stroked and kissed. What a dramatic change... “See what a little love can do?”
The next morning as instructed I had to give him 2 pills. I would normally just pick up a cat, hold him like a baby, open his mouth and put the pills in, problem solved, but in this instance, I did not wish to upset him, so decided I would give him some sardines and hide the pills in that. Fortunately they were very small pills and true to his habit of scoffing his food, he ate the sardines and did not even notice the pills, so they went down as prescribed. I decided to leave the cage door open as he seemed so good and see if he would venture out. He didn’t, however very early in the morning, or should I say, very late in the night, we heard crashing and banging. He had decided to come out and explore but had managed to knock a vase from the windowsill, as well as a Pyrex dish left on the kitchen worktop. Both had fallen and smashed, so the place was in chaos. I found Bobby hiding behind the clock on the windowsill but before I could reach for him he made his own way back to his cage and retreated to his ‘cave’. He felt safer in his ‘hidey-hole’, but how he managed to jump down from the worktop and move across the kitchen floor which was absolutely covered with broken glass and not injure himself, I do not know, but he seemed OK and was soon back to asking to be cuddled and he was even purring! The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £15.00 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on: 01202 826244. Any proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

Motoring mutterings

Cars and Brains.
N
ot a comment about some of our road users who seem to find ever-more inventive ways of harming themselves and other humans, but about how cars can truly help us improve our driving lives.
and therefore unfortunately wasn’t around to grab the wheel or slam on the brakes to avoid or mitigate the fatal crash which ensued. Are we unaware of other unpublicised accidents? Personally, I find the current circumstances incomprehensible. In our haste to be ‘first past the post’ with fully autonomous cars, we appear to have negligently and illogically assumed we can replicate the human brain overnight, and this is potentially leading to disastrous consequences. Softly, softly, catchy monkey say I. The bottom line is this; In driving a car, drivers remain legally responsible for everything under their control. Driver beware!

s winter progresses the lakes are continuing to fill up with ducks, with numbers peaking in December. If you are a beginner to bird watching, you can start to learn the different species by observing their feeding habits. The pintail, a duck with a long neck and as the name suggests a long tail too, is a dabbling duck. It feeds by dabbling its beak in the water sifting out plants and insects. Another dabbler is the wigeon which feeds on aquatic plants and it can also be seen out of the water grazing the grass on the banks. The shoveler also dabbles but in a much more entertaining way! It uses its huge spatula like bill to sift the water but at the same time will often spin round and round in an attempt to create currents in the water which bring the food to them. One of the most conspicuous ducks is the tufted duck; with
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. www.hiwwt.org.uk
its striking black and white markings it is easy to pick out the males on the lake. The tufted duck is a diving duck, so you will see it diving down in to the water to catch its dinner. The goosander will also dive down in to the water. Moving away from the water and into the woodland, bird watching continues to be enjoyable as the bare trees leave fewer places for the birds to hide. The woodland hide is always busy as birds flock to the feeders for an easy meal. Winter visitors to look out for include siskin, redpoll and brambling. For a helping hand with bird watching, why not join our Reserves Officer Bob Chapman for an “In to the Roost” event on the Thursday 8th and Tuesday 20th December from 3pm until 4.30pm. Alternatively you could get off to a great start with your 2017 bird list on Thursday 5th January, 2pm until 4pm, by joining us for “New Year Birds”. For both
events, please book your space by telephoning 01425 472760. As the New Year approaches the first flowers begin to appear including small patches of snowdrops. The first fungi of the year will also be starting to show. The scarlet elf cup feeds on dead wood and thrives in our wet woodland habitats. As its name suggests it is a bright red cup shaped fungus which creates a welcoming splash of colour amongst the leaf litter. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com

Hobbies Why Collectors Love The Vinyl Vibe By Kate McLelland
I
n recent years there has been a revolution in the way we buy and listen to music. Thanks to new technologies we are now able to play the music we love wherever, and whenever, we want to hear it. With so much emphasis on the streaming of music from services such as Spotify, iTunes and Tidal, the use of minidisks, cassettes and CDs now seems strangely oldfashioned. After all, when you can stream everything you could ever wish to hear direct to your mobile phone, tablet or laptop, who needs a physical format? In spite of all this ingenious and accessible technology, it seems many of us actually prefer to do it the “old school” way. Collecting vinyl records is one of the most surprising trends of the 21st century and fans cite the “authenticity” of analogue sound, the
tactile quality of vinyl and the availability of album cover art and liner notes as reasons why they prefer vinyl recordings to digital music files or CDs. STARTING YOUR COLLECTION Many vinyl enthusiasts start out by taking on someone else’s collection, often in the form of a gift or inheritance from a family member. Chances are that these records will not be rare items, but they will at least provide the basis for a collection. Car boot sales, charity shops, record fairs and specialist vinyl stores are the best places to start digging around for additional records, and you might even come across a rare release as you browse. Once you’ve acquired a few records, you’ll need to decide how to play them. Vintage equipment can be hard to repair if there’s a problem, so most collectors opt for a modern, portable player (£50 - £100) or a modern turntable that can be linked to a computer (from £80 - £120). HOW WILL I KNOW IF A RECORD IS VALUABLE? As with any collectable item, rarity is the main driver for pushing up value. Certain packaging characteristics, such as foil-stamp numbering on the jacket (001/500), different coloured pressings, misprints or famous or controversial images/text can add to the value. Records that have been withdrawn or censored should also be on
the collector’s radar, as this indicates that fewer records will have been sold. HOW DO I BUILD UP MY COLLECTION? Online sites recommended by collectors include Classic UK 45s – which specialises in 45 rpm releases from the ’50s and ‘60s; Planet Earth Records (an online record store with thousands of rare vinyl records) and discogs. com – where you can buy records at relatively low cost and exchange information with other vinyl fans. Record Fairs are great places to browse and chat with other enthusiasts. Go to www. recordfairsuk.co.uk to check dates of fairs taking place in your area. DON’T FORGET CONTEMPORARY VINYL It’s easy to focus on vintage collections and forget that today’s artists are releasing tracks (or re-releasing past work) on vinyl. Some limited vinyl releases by bands such as Radiohead, the Arctic Monkeys and Keane are also highly collectable, selling for between £50 and £100 each. Vinyl is a gateway to a whole world of music enjoyment, with opportunities to find out more about different artists and genres of music as you add to your collection. Best of all, you’ll be able to connect with the large and diverse community of enthusiasts who are eager to share their knowledge with you.

EVERLASTING MEMORIES AT ADVENT
E
den Funeral Directors is joining in the Ringwood Christmas Lights Switch-On on Sat 3rd December with a Memory Tree to remember your loved ones and those that you cannot spend Christmas with. Christmas is a wonderful time of the year for faith, celebration, love and family, but it is also a time that may be difficult for those who are remembering someone dear to them that they have lost, or they are unable to see or spend time with. The Christmas Light switch on is a wonderful day for everyone to enjoy the parade with lots of different entertainment and stalls; Eden will be there with a Christmas tree and memory stars for adults and children alike to decorate and design, or simply write some words of comfort or a loved one’s name. The stars will then be hung on the tree for the Christmas and Advent period, and the tree will be placed in the Lady Chapel in St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, where the memory or wishes for your loved ones will remain after the celebrations on the day. If you are unable to come along to the day itself, there will be stars available at Eden’s office on Castleman Way, or please do call us and we can write your words for you and ensure your memories are included.
Heidi Lund and Rob Goff are here for guidance and support as Eden Funeral Directors. As truly independent, family run funeral directors, we offer help to families in Hampshire, Dorset and across the New Forest. We are confident to deliver the very best service, providing care and advice whenever needed. We are able to offer a personalised and individual service, putting the clients’ needs at the very forefront of everything that we do. Reach us by telephone 24 hours a day, every day, or by visiting the office between 9.30am -5pm Monday to Friday.

Green People’s Self-Tan, £21, is one of the best fake tans on the market. It’s easy to apply, and develops into a natural looking tan within three hours. As an added bonus, it doesn’t have that typical fake tan smell, and it contains rosehip oil to moisturise as it tans. As with any
fake tan, you’ll want to leave at least 24 hours between hair removal and application. It’s also a good idea to exfoliate with a good body scrub beforehand. Massage in a light body lotion, and give it time to sink in. Then work some extra moisturiser into your knees, elbows and other ‘knobbly’ bits, to help avoid darker patches. See www. greenpeople.co.uk. If your hair is looking a bit frazzled and fed up with all that styling, try treating it to an Ouai Treatment Masque. It takes just 10 minutes for the treatment to soothe and restore your weary locks, leaving them smoother and shinier after just one use. A pack of eight sachets will set you back £25, so it’s not cheap, but worth having in your beauty arsenal for big nights out. See www.spacenk.com. I don’t know whether the eyes truly are the windows to the soul, but they’re certainly a tattle tale when it comes to late nights. Try Anatomicals Puffy the Eye Bag Slayer Wake Up Under Eye Patches. Three pairs cost around £6 from Amazon or www.glossybox.co.uk. They feel incredibly soothing, and do seem to reduce swelling in just half
by Kate Duggan an hour. Cover up any remaining dark circles with Dry Concealer Eye Concealer, £11.95, from www. skinshop.co.uk. While the coverage isn’t quite as flawless as some concealers, it makes up for it by helping to moisturise and repair skin. It also goes on smoothly and doesn’t draw attention to fine lines, puffy eyes or dry skin. You can also use the Dry Eye Concealer to calm and cover small patches of eczema and other areas of irritation. Sometimes a spritz of perfume is all you need to perk yourself up before pulling on your heels. Jo Malone are known for their quirky fragrance combinations, and their latest cologne, Basil and Neroli, is no different. It’s got that lovely freshness of neroli, with a herby twist. Playful and warm, the fragrance just seems to improve as the night goes on. Expect plenty of compliments. £43 for 30ml, www. jomalone. co.uk.

egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.
If you are not helped by the traditional answers about community, compassion, and what life’s all about, perhaps you instead need to find people who keep playing with and celebrating the questions.
The Unitarians. Together in community for our individual journeys of spirituality and faith.

New Care Company set to create 50 local jobs
A
new business providing home care to help elderly people continue to live independently in their own homes is launching in East Dorset and Blandford. Home Instead Senior Care will care for clients across a wide area including Wimborne, Verwood, Ringwood, Blandford and surrounding areas. The face behind the business is Weymouth born Caroline Flay who is looking to create 50 new caring jobs in the area.
Caroline (34) has worked in the care sector all her life; her interest began when she worked as a care assistant in a residential home for children with learning disabilities right after college. She recalls, “I have always wanted to care for people ever since I was a young girl. I remember when I
first started caring and I learnt the importance of proper care and how to look after the whole person. I was born to be in care.” Caroline worked in a variety of residential settings for both children and adults with learning disabilities before moving into an operations management role in domiciliary care in Dorset. As Caroline gained more experienced in her caring roles, her jobs gradually became more desk based and eventually, she began looking for a new challenge. Caroline had been thinking of starting her own company and in particular caring for older people when she discovered Home Instead Senior Care. Having learned about the company’s reputation for providing high quality, at-home care, Caroline felt this was the perfect opportunity. She comments: “I was very aware that no one really wants to have to leave their own home but often residential care is all that people think is available, but now there is an excellent and viable alternative. We will provide the type of care which I would want for myself and my loved ones.
I am thrilled to be delivering a service in the community
where I live with my husband, and also to be able to create local jobs for local people. I am keen to talk to kind, compassionate and likeminded individuals who may be interested in becoming CAREGivers.” Home Instead Senior Care is changing the way care is delivered in the UK. Their service is tailored to the needs of individual clients and ranges from companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, post-discharge care, personal care, medication reminders, shopping and errands. The service is totally flexible to meet clients’ needs and is available from as little as 1 hour to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
For more information on joining the team, or on the services provided, please call the office 0300 012 0123 or visit: www.homeinstead. co.uk/eastdorset

Parenting
Learning Through Play by Kate Duggan
F
rom science kits to marble runs, toys can be as educational as they are fun. Learning through play sees your child developing key mental, physical and emotional skills, as well as a real appetite for knowledge. Most toys can be educational, whether they’re helping your child to learn maths, or just to improve their hand-to-eye co-ordination. Some, however, really do stand out from the crowd. If you’re looking for an educational gift this Christmas, here are a few ideas to get you started… A simple football can help your child to develop their co-ordination, become better at working in a team and learn the importance of perseverance. If your child isn’t particularly sporty, the new Scriball from Mitre (£10) might just tempt them. Each kit contains a football decorated with a picture to be coloured in (picture below). There are also felt tips, a mini pump and a display stand. Our seven year old tester had great fun colouring the Scriball in, and then wanted to head straight out to the park to try it out. Marble runs are fantastic for encouraging a child’s creativity, as well as helping to develop
their problem solving skills, spatial awareness and handto-eye coordination. They’re also a lot of fun. Marble runs start at around £10 for a small kit, but if you fancy splashing out, the Hape Quadrilla Space Run (main picture) is likely to prove a hit. The 176 pieces allow for plenty of combinations and the glow in the dark stickers add extra excitement. Crafted with birch and rubber wood, the Space Run should last for years, so could well be passed down to your grandchildren. £120 from www.Amazon.co.uk. While children seem to choose their comics based on the free plastic toy, most children’s magazines do include educational activities, from craft ideas to recipes, puzzles and colouring in. If your children have moved on from Sparkle and Thomas the Tank Engine, they might be interested in one of the new range of children’s subscription magazines: • National Geographic Kids magazine is aimed at the ‘explorers, archaeologists, scientists, artists and astronauts of the future’. Your child could read about endangered animals, lost civilisations, deep sea dives and lots more. A subscription costs from £36 for 12 issues, and can be ordered from: www.ngkids.co.uk. • Whizz Pop Bang! is a monthly science magazine
aimed at 6-11 year olds. It’s packed with fun facts, craft activities and experiments. Each issue costs £3.75, including postal costs. Subscription offers are available, visit: www. whizzpopbang.com. • The Week Junior is a current affairs magazine for children aged 8+. It covers news in bite sized chunks, specially written to appeal to children. There are also features on a range of subjects, from geography to technology and film. Subscriptions cost from £22.99 for 15 issues, visit www.theweekjunior. co.uk. Lots of board games have an educational element. However, the ones by Orchard Toys are undoubtedly amongst the best. They’re designed to help children with a range of skills, from maths to telling the time, identifying healthy food and getting to grips with money. Orchard Toys games are always well-designed, robust and great fun to play for children and parents alike. The bestselling Pop to the Shops sees players move around a board to spend their coins at different shops. For younger children, Dotty Dinosaurs and Monster Bingo focus on helping players to learn colours and shapes. Priced from just £4.50, games are available from toy stores, supermarkets and www.orchardtoys.com.

Two Golds for Moors Valley in top tourism award.
M
oors Valley Country Park has ‘done the double’ by coming away with two Gold awards in this year’s Dorset Tourism Awards and was awarded Gold in both the ‘Access and Inclusivity’ and ‘Sustainable Tourism’ categories. The Access and Inclusivity award recognises a business that can demonstrate exceptional customer service to all, particularly those with impairments and other access needs, including mobility, auditory, sensory or dietary. The Sustainable Tourism award is made to companies that demonstrate commitment to sustainability and implements clear reduce, reuse and recycle initiatives. “To win one award is amazing, but to come away with two is simply fantastic!” said Clare Gronow, Team Leader at the Park.“Over the last few years we have increased our focus on improving access to the Park and across all our activities. At the same time, we have set out to minimise the potential negative impact that such a large operation can have on the environment.”
Park Rangers celebrate 2 Gold Awards. L - R: Evan Powell, Sara Tschersich, Doug King, Ben Symes.
Jointly managed by East Dorset District Council and the Forestry Commission, sustainability initiatives in the Park include using vegetable oil for vehicles and chain saws, solar panel heating, a biomass boiler, rainwater harvesting and a range of other reduce, reuse and recycle activities. Sustainability is at the heart of how the Forestry Commission manages the forest and harvests the timber. It makes sure all timber is produced responsibly and revenue from harvesting and selling timber locally is re-invested to ensure the forest remains vibrant, open and attractive. Moors Valley welcomes over 750,000 visitors every year and offers an unrivalled combination of outdoor leisure, wildlife and health activities in a safe environment.

Mike's Motors
By Mike Wattam
T Pi Brn .
Peugeot 308 SW his is all about individual perception of car brands. Therefore, if you think no car is worth having unless it has a gun-sight glued to the bonnet, don’t read on. If you want to know about two car brands with cars doing similar things really well but at different price-points mainly down to brand perception, read on. The award-winning Peugeot 308 has been around for a couple of years and recently the GT model has been added with all the GT frills you would expect from a car maker and uniquely in this case adding their 2 litre diesel engine -a great power unit with auto gearbox and an estate car body style referred to as a ‘sportwagon’. It really looks the part inside and out with dark red pearlescent paint and sculpted black leather sports seats and interior adding to the ‘Techie’ environment. Meanwhile in Volvo towers, the V60 has been around for 6 years and the ‘V’ estate car is a familiar face on our roads. A more restrained but bulky look outside - traditional and remaining unaltered over the years in the Volvo tradition, while inside sports leather seats give great ambience. The driver environment appears quite old-style until noticing the traditional-looking instruments and command interface are all exquisite adaptable TFT screens. Under the skin is even more tech than
T
the Peugeot, especially as you should expect from a Volvo, in the ‘safety’ arena. Our car had the lusty new 2-litre diesel D4 engine, mated to a slick manual gearbox. So not outstanding visually and with bulky styling, it was difficult to believe this car has virtually an identical footprint to the Peugeot. On the road, the 308 has a lusty performance despite an almost identical power output, aided by the superb EAT6 auto gearbox and lighter weight. The heavier V60 with a manual gearbox required more concerted effort to row along - an excellent auto ‘box’ was an available option not fitted to the test car. In road-holding and handling there was again divergence. The Volvo had the optional Polestar adaptive (hard) suspension and what was referred to as heightened responses from the power train but didn’t impress. The Peugeot on very large handsome wheels inspired great confidence on the road despite a comfortable suspension, then
a press of the standard ‘sport’ button on this GT brought stiffer suspension, an auto box exploiting all the engine power, and a very crisp engine note an effective and very enjoyable tool enabling very rapid progress. As regards load capacity, this was surprising. The Volvo despite a major brand value being cavernous estates, was beaten hands-down by the Peugeot which was clearly better packaged and equipped in the load area, rear seats up or down and could carry much more volume and weight. Both cars had highly adjustable front seats and steering wheel giving excellent comfort. Spreading out in the front compromised rear seat room equally on both cars, such that smaller adults could be accommodated, but fast-food addicts not so easily. The driving position in the Peugeot was higher and commanding with driving instruments mounted above the steering wheel, directly in the line of sight, superb. In terms of financials, the Volvo in this lists at around £35 grand, while the Peugeot ticket price is £8 grand less, a huge saving although the cost of depreciation may well be very similar. As the title infers, it all comes down to brand perception, as these cars are very closely matched otherwise, including that vital perceived quality. Ignoring finances, I’d like either car but brand perception is simply not on my radar. So, Peugeot please!

The Gift of a Good Book Struggling to find the perfect book to give as a gift? Or wondering what to add to your own wish list? Maybe we can help… The Hidden People – Alison Littlewood Crime, fantasy and historical fiction are melded together in The Hidden People. Albie Mirralls is every bit the sensible, upstanding gentleman that Victorian society wants him to be. When his cousin, Lizzie, is burnt as a changeling, Albie travels from London to her village to see justice done. But when Albie’s own wife seems so completely changed, he finds himself questioning whether there could be some truth to the rumours about his cousin. The perfect book for curling up with on a winter’s night. The British Table – Colman Andrews and Christopher Hirsheimer For the foodie in your life, you might want to consider this recently released tome. Featuring around 125 recipes, from the traditional to the modern, there’s plenty to tempt most taste-buds. Recipes range from long-forgotten traditional fare, to regional specialities and contemporary classics. The focus is on warming comfort food. Think Braised Brisket followed by Whisky-SoakedRaisin and Orange Marmalade.
Little Warrior – Giuseppe Catozzella Inspired by a tragic true story, Little Warrior tells the story of Samia Omar. Growing up in war-torn Somalia, life is hard, and dangerous. But Samia has big dreams – she wants to follow in Mo Farah’s footsteps and compete in the Olympics. As life grows increasingly hard for women, Samia refuses to be cowed into submission. There are few options for Samia but to put her life into the hands of traffickers, in the hope of escaping to a better place. A heartbreaking read that will stay with you long past finishing the last page. The Girl Who Saved Christmas – Matt Haig Magic is starting to fade in Victorian England, and Amelia might be the only one who can save the day. (Father Christmas being a bit tied up with reindeers falling from the sky, angry trolls and other mishaps.) While it’s the sequel to the 2015 children’s bestseller A Boy Called Christmas, it stands up perfectly well
on its own. An ideal gift for children aged 7 and up, this is a really enjoyable read. So much so that you may well find yourself borrowing it back. Buzz Books 2016: Fall/Winter Still no idea what book to go for? Download Buzz Books for free from Amazon, and you can read excerpts from 40 of this season’s new releases. Wellknown and debut writers are included, across both fiction and non-fiction. With a wide range of genres, there should be something to suit most tastes. Think of it as browsing in a bookshop, only with more time to read and the chance to sample books at home. A Christmas Kiss – Vicky Pattison 24 year old Amber dreams of designing her own fashion line. But after a year of working as a general dogsbody for the Queen of Fashion, Diana Grant, that dream is looking increasingly unachievable. So when an opening comes up working with a leading fashion house, Amber jumps at the opportunity. With a new job and a new love, Amber’s life is looking up, but is she in danger of getting a bit too caught up in the glitzy world of fashion? Warm and funny, this is a great romantic comedy to enjoy over a glass of prosecco.

Portrait of a Local Artist Wildlife in Dorset regularly inspires the artwork of Tanya Hinton, who lives in Gillingham. “I collect driftwood from beaches near Bridport including Eype,” says Tanya, who has lived in Dorset since she was 17 years of age. “I also gather wood from old houses - I was recently given twelve 17th century doors. Various dumps and skips can provide some lovely finds, too. “I love the county’s varied and rugged landscape and how unchanged many parts are; it’s still a scene from a Thomas Hardy novel.” Over the past few years Tanya has been producing unique paintings on wood that she has discovered washed-up on beaches, buried in gardens and reclaimed from old buildings. Each piece of wood offers wonderful possibilities: the sea-worn textures, grain patterns and old, flaking paint might suggest misty landscapes, rippled water and other settings. Tanya paints creatures which enhance each background and which she feels are appropriate to the wood. These beautifully painted animals and birds each have an individuality and detailed expressive features. Tanya was born and brought up in Berkshire, living on the banks of the Thames. Her extensive experience and skill as a painter dates back to her childhood, when she would carefully paint the faces and detailed costumes of figures for her father’s world-renowned model soldier business. Under his guidance, Tanya learnt about handling paint, colour mixing and attention to detail at a very early age. Since then Tanya has always been involved in creative work: painting, ceramics and as an artist’s model. She has exhibited her work at various galleries and events, including: Fisherton Mill, Salisbury, Dorset Art Weeks, Shaftesbury Art Centre, First View Gallery, Stourhead and Wylye Valley Art Trail. http://www.creativecoverage.co.uk/artists-page/ item/603-tanya-hinton

Ringwood School launches new website.
R
http://www.ringwoodacademy.co.uk
ingwood School are proud to announce the launch of their new website which was created in partnership with Halo Design, a Ringwood based marketing and design agency. The aim of the new website is to create a destination ‘hub’ for Ringwood School which appeals to its various audiences: students, parents, teachers and governors to name a few, making it easily accessible across a variety of devices including PC, tablet and importantly, mobile. The re-branding of Ringwood School, combined with modern, stylish photography, ensures that the new website reflects the ethos of the school ‘Inspired to Learn, Supported to Succeed’ in today’s digital world. The website also highlights the 3 key areas of the school via distinctive colour segmentation and therefore aiding navigation: Main School for 11-16 year olds, Sixth Form for post 16 and the Teaching
School Alliance which Ringwood leads in partnership with Bransgore Primary for the South Central region. The website navigation has been created to ensure ease of use and includes some useful external links such as Parent Pay which enables parents/carers of students to directly pay online for school related activities and quick access for staff, students and parents to Ringwood School’s intranet. Leanne Symonds, the new Headteacher at Ringwood School, comments: “It is fantastic to see our new website up and running. We have had great feedback from staff, students, parents and governors and we are continually looking at ways in which we can improve the efficiency of the site to ensure that our communication is slick and timely. The new website now gives a great feel for the ethos of our school and we are proud of how we are now portrayed online.”

Verwood based
Fordingbridge Twinning news.
F
