elcome to our Christmas edition of Roundabout Ringwood. This issue’s cover photo was taken last year during an afternoon’s bike ride on New Year’s Eve travelling south down the Bolderwood Ornamental Drive. The mist in the trees and the appearance of the sun created some really magical scenes! Another magical location at this time of year in the Forest if you know it, is the Portuguese Fireplace near Lyndhurst where, on Christmas Eve, you may be lucky to see it adorned with traditional refreshments for Santa and even carrots for his reindeer! Our Quirky Britain article on page 8 tells us that there are some places where Christmas lasts all year round with a growing trend for shops selling specialised festive goods and

10 High Street, Curry Garden, Ringwood.

he smallest building in the c1868 photograph right, 10 High Street, is a Georgian cottage with two front doors, a small shop window and three first floor windows, with the central window blocked up, probably due to the Window Tax. By 1901 this cottage was the home and shop of shoe and bootmaker George Payne and his family. During the first half of the 20th century the property became The Old Brown House restaurant. It was probably then that it acquired its distinctive outer false ‘Tudor’ beams on top of its Georgian plasterwork. Ironically this building contains genuine timber framing inside, although not visible today. Other than the false beams the exterior has changed little over the years. For many decades the Old Brown House and Daisy Darling opposite were the only tea/ coffee shops in the High Street, unlike today when the town is full of them. In the 1970s the last of the many owners of the Old Brown House sold the business and for a while the

restaurant became the Country Kitchen. In about 1986 the business was bought by Mr Feroze Khan who opened the Curry Garden. This restaurant has continued serving Indian Tandoori cuisine for over thirty years and is now under the ownership of Mr Khan’s sons, Humayun and Jay. Today the ground floor frontage remains virtually unchanged since the photograph of c1868, a most unusual attribute, as almost all of Ringwood’s other High Street buildings have been given newer shop fronts. The High Street Shops Where It’s Christmas All Year Round by Kate McLelland

re you one of those people who starts looking forward to next Christmas as soon as the decorations are packed away? Thanks to a growing British shopping trend, you can now enjoy Christmas all year round. A growing number of retailers are trying out all-year Christmas shopping, with many of the more successful stores located in areas known for attracting tourists. In Stratford-Upon-Avon, The Nutcracker Christmas shop - with its range of festive ornaments - makes a lively contrast to the staid Shakespeare souvenirs on sale elsewhere. The shop is part of a small family business founded by Robert Newman in 2001. Robert had intended to open a small gift shop, but a visit to a trade gift show in Birmingham opened his eyes to the huge potential for selling festive goods. He now owns a chain of Christmas stores in England and Scotland. Lisa Hill-Whyte, owner of the Isle of Wight’s Jingle Bells Christmas shop, was inspired to open her business in 2009 after visiting Christmas stores in Austria and America. She began by filling an adjoining tea room with Christmas

merchandise during the winter months, but her idea proved so popular that she was able to realise her dream of selling festive goods for most of the year. Her Shanklin store now stays open seven days a week, from March to Christmas Eve. Lisa says: “We do as much business in April as we do in December and our busiest months are July, August and September.” Lisa’s policy is to stock items that are “a little bit special”, so customers can personalise their Christmas tree decorations. As a result she has had some unusual requests: “Some customers ask for a certain animal that you wouldn’t necessarily expect at Christmas – such as a fish, raccoon, tiger, elephant, sheep, cow or fox. The list is long, but I have found all these and others. I haven’t been caught out yet!” So what attracts shoppers to buy Christmas items at a time of the year when the festive season should be furthest from our thoughts? Hayley Corden from Bromsgrove sees it as part of the tourist experience. She says: “Whenever we go away we always try to buy a Christmas tree decoration. It’s lovely to look at your Christmas tree

and remember all the places you’ve been.” James Tunstall from Newquay, Cornwall, enjoys the “magical feeling” he gets in a Christmas shop. He says: “I love to browse out of season. It’s about recalling the Christmasses you had as a child, and these shops bring it all back.” However, some shoppers are very far from experiencing nostalgia when they see festive goods on sale out of season. Whilst enjoying a summer holiday in Dorset, Tracy Whelbourne from Chesterfield was shocked to find Christmas decorations on sale: “So there we were, enjoying the sunny weather, and what do I see? A Christmas shop, open, with customers inside! Christmas seems to start earlier and earlier these days, and seeing it made me really cross.” Whether the sight of a high street Christmas shop thrills you with memories of childhood Christmasses past or makes you boil with rage, it seems that from now on - should they so choose - fans of the festive season will be able to shop for Santa stockings, advent calendars and shiny baubles whenever they want.

Fordingbridge Twinning News

delegation of over 20 people from Fordingbridge, visited Vimoutiers in early October to celebrate Vimoutier’s annual “Fete de la Pomme” (Annual Apple Festival) in order to meet visitors from two other towns that Vimoutiers is twinned with, from Belgium and Germany. Two of the delegation, Tim Wheatley and Dave Green, arrived on tandem on the Saturday morning (see photo) celebrating their arrival at “Le Fordingbridge Bar”, in the middle of Vimoutiers! They had cycled from Le Havre to Vimoutiers to celebrate 35 years after 6 riders had done it 35 years ago to inaugurate the beginning of the Twinning of Fordingbridge with Vimoutiers, in Normandy. In 1981, six cyclists, including Brian Wheatley, Tim’s father, (representing what was then known as “Friends of Fordingbridge”) rode from

Fordingbridge to Vimoutiers on tandems, to launch the twinning between Vimoutiers and Fordingbridge. Another member of that original team of six cyclists, Peter Adams, was present to welcome them upon their arrival (Peter is also pictured, immediately to the left of Tim, seen here with a pair of sunglasses on top of his head!) Tim and Dave were welcomed by Tim’s mother, Sue Wheatley, and various other members of the two families. A celebratory drink was enjoyed at “Le Fordingbridge Bar”, by nearly everyone: a fantastic effort! The next Twinning event, will be on Saturday evening 3rd February, the annual “Murder Mystery Evening”. Tickets will be on sale in the new year. Fighting Colds & Flu: Myths & Magic Cures By Alison Runham

olds can make life miserable and flu can make us quite ill. But which cold and flu facts are true, and are there really any cures? If you have a high temperature, it’s the flu MYTH. Colds can sometimes cause a high temperature, although it’s usually short-lived and not above 38°C. However, sweats and chills normally indicate flu. It’s pointless to avoid someone with a cold or flu. You’ll get it anyway. MYTH. Flu and colds are highly contagious, spread by air and direct contact, but you can stay germ-free by avoiding sufferers or by both practising good hygiene. • Clean hands and highcontact surfaces regularly (e.g. door handles, touchscreens), especially after touching the nose or mouth. • Don’t share cutlery, cups or towels. • Ensure the contagious person has tissues nearby to catch coughs and sneezes, and bin them immediately. They should use the ’vampire’ cough (into the inside of their elbow) if they’re caught tissue-less. The flu vaccine doesn’t always prevent flu, so it’s not worth having. TRUTH and MYTH. Flu vaccines are produced in advance, so experts must

predict the three or four flu strains that will be prevalent next winter. While you may catch an unexpected or rarer flu strain you’re not protected from, the vaccine will protect you from most strains you’ll encounter. It’s vital if you’re vulnerable or have low immunity, e.g. if you’re a carer, over 65, pregnant or have an existing medical condition. Getting very wet and/or cold can give you a cold or the flu. MYTH (obviously). However, cold and wet conditions can put your body under stress, making it more vulnerable to germs. The flu vaccine gives you flu MYTH. The vaccine contains inactive viruses, but it may cause a temperature and aching for a while. If you’ve had a cold or flu for a while, you need antibiotics MYTH. Your doctor may give in and prescribe them, although they know antibiotics don’t kill viruses. When a patient is ‘cured’ after a week’s antibiotics, in truth that extra week just allowed them to finally fight off their virus. Antibiotics are only useful if you get a secondary bacterial infection. MAGIC CURES Research says: Prevention. Good hygiene works. Boost your immune system to help you resist viruses or fight them off by reducing stress and getting adequate sleep.

Regular zinc reduces the number of colds children get and should work for adults too. Regular probiotics and garlic may have some preventative effect, but research is sketchy. Vitamin C and echinacea really don’t prevent colds and any symptom reduction is negligible to non-existent. However, Vitamin C may be of limited benefit to people already under physical stress (e.g. marathon runners). Decongestants and antihistamines: when used separately, they have very little or no effect. However, when used together, particularly with painkillers, they may cause a slight improvement in symptoms. Ipratropium bromide (Rinatec) nasal spray does seem to alleviate symptoms, particularly a runny nose. Cough suppressants: Any benefits are negligible. Vapour rubs do seem to alleviate night time cough a little and improve sleep, but in studies over 25% of users reported burning itching sensation at the application area. NSAIDs (Non-steroidal antiinflammatories, e.g. ibuprofen) can reduce fever and help with aches and pains. If you have a cold or flu, stay hydrated, alleviate the symptoms and take heart - researchers are working to modify peptides that can combat cold viruses.

mainly because it was British, and went broke in 2005. From the ruins, Nanjing of China bought some remnants including the MG brand, the MG TF which was a highly-thought-of sports car, and some of the original Longbridge factory site, equipment, ideas and design employees. They were set to work producing designs for Chinese cars, initially using a large bank of ideas held by Rover Group which due to shortage of funds, had never been acted upon. The new Chinese owners also believed they could use the MG brand

with new products to sell into the UK - and later Europe. So, the MG brand is mainly UK-designed, but is made in China with little evidence of design/material compromise. The MG3 is the child of the still-born mid-size Rover hatchback. Now the physical stuff. There are quite a few MG3s about but probably you didn’t notice as the discreet badges are just far too small. What you saw was a very attractively styled five-door hatch looking purposeful with large alloys and grippy tyres. My car was the top ‘Style+’ slightly customised - with many wheel and body colour combinations it is difficult to imagine that any two MG3s will look the same. Inside, leather seats and some very neat, tasteful styling touches concentrating upon an oval shaped theme - this works very well indeed. This top version included a full array of instruments MG style, automatic climate control, DAB radio with bluetooth and device connectivity, while safety and convenience were well catered for with auto lights with auto-dip, auto wipers auto emergency brake and so on. But to drive? Not a ball of fire, yet still getting to 60 in 10 seconds and this is the best to expect

with a very low insurance group rating of 4E. A slick 5-speed gearbox helps you through the gears seamlessly but as the gearing is rather ‘short’ in the interest of performance, it can get a nice kind of ‘buzzy’ as it builds up to cruise. Large wheels with grippy tyres give truly great road-holding and handling in the true MG tradition. My one sticking point is a very hard, knobbly ride which tells me that either MG have forgotten how to do suspension, or they designed this setup for smooth first-world roads (Europe) rather than the 3rd-world roads of the UK. In summary, this car is simply very useable and a delight to drive, just for the sake of driving. Full circle back to my ‘surprise’. How good to drive, how practical this car is, and at such a low price point. With four price levels too and finance plans which take all the buying pain away, with very economical running costs and cheap insurance, this is an ideal entry point into motoring for many people. Nice one!

The end of the traditional Tax Return

he traditional completion by a taxpayer of a lot of information in a tax return is being replaced by a simple assessment. Under the new simple assessment, rather than asking taxpayers to fill in a self-assessment with lots of information, HMRC will now use data it already holds and calculate the tax owed. Such data would include income and benefits in kind from employment, pensions, state benefits and savings interest. Taxpayers who receive a simple assessment letter (PA302) or a P800 tax calculation from HMRC should immediately check that the information is correct and query anything that they are not happy with, within 60 days. Otherwise the tax liability becomes binding and payable.

The new simple assessment will apply to: • New state pensioners with income more than their personal allowances; • PAYE taxpayers who have underpaid tax and can no longer have it collected through a PAYE tax code. Pensioners whose income is only just over their personal allowance will remain in self-assessment for 2016/17 but be put into the new simple assessment regime for 2017/18. Taxpayers with more complex tax affairs will continue doing selfassessment but, according to HMRC, will be asked only for information needed to assess their tax, benefits and credits. Ringwood School embraces #HelloYellow in support of World Mental Health Day

ingwood School students and staff have embraced #HelloYellow to show their support of World Mental Health Day. The charity Young Minds has called on schools across the UK to take part in #HelloYellow to show young people that they are not alone with their mental health. The day began at 8am with our Sixth Form students hosting free yellow nail painting for both students and staff. One nail was painted for free and if £1 was donated to Young Minds all 10 nails were painted. The nail painting proved so popular that this also continued throughout break and lunchtime, accompanied by an ever popular impromptu cake sale! Students from Years 7-13 contemplated the mean-

ing of yellow during their daily Tutor Time and staff showed their support by wearing a variety of shades of yellow (which

complemented their nails!) Over £150 was raised for Young Minds through the nail painting and cake sale. Progress Leader, Mrs Vicki Lewis, who coordinated the School’s recognition of the day, commented: “At Ringwood School we take the mental health of our young people very seriously. Our pastoral care is excellent and students know that there is always an open door policy if they need to and want to talk. It was fantastic to see so many students and staff getting involved with the day and embracing #HelloYellow”.

re you the kind of person who will turn yourself inside out for others? Do you find it hard to say no and will compromise your own levels of emotional comfort just to keep the peace? Often people grow up with the belief of having to keep the peace in their relationships which means that they are unable to genuinely give to others without their kindness being exploited in some way. What usually happens is that you end up exploiting yourself. People will say ‘yes’ when they mean ‘no’. Sometimes the very thought of saying ‘no’ can create an overwhelming feeling of guilt and fear of rejection/ abandonment and this may have been a reality in a person’s life. Abandonment is a primal fear which affects us all but especially so when we have experienced emotional or physical abandonment. A person may have learnt not to ask for what they truly want in a relationship, as previously their wants and needs have not been heard or have been denied in some way. As a child they may have remembered saying ‘no’ or doing something which resulted in isolation or abandonment. This repeated pattern slowly chips away at the strength of a person’s voice and the belief they have in themselves. Sometimes a person believes that they are responsible for another person’s feelings and if they say ‘no’ then they will cause that person pain and discomfort. They often feel that they need to make everyone happy and it is difficult for them to consider what they really want. When kindness comes from a place of uneasiness then it’s not true kindness. These questions may help to you to work out if your kindness is unhealthy are;

Stop! When snow is falling fast, don’t drive unless you really have to. In terrible weather, putting things off until conditions improve is best. Winter ailments can leave you exhausted and sluggish. Worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet conditions as well as those with a good, deep tread. Make sure all exterior lights are working and that windscreen wiper blades are in good condition. Check the oil, coolant and washer fluid levels. In the wet Take simple precautions when driving in heavy rain. Slow down: the wetter the roads, the longer your braking distance, and the heavier the rain, the worse your visibility. Drive cautiously and leave a good distance between

you and the vehicle in front. In snow and ice Again, slow down and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front. Use your headlights if necessary. Brake and accelerate gently. It’s not always easy to tell if you’re driving on ice, though if your tyres are making less noise than usual you may well be. If you do skid, don’t brake – you’ll lock the wheels and lose control. Instead, depress the clutch and steer into the direction of the skid. When the car straightens, steer as normal. Emergency Stopping Apply the brake, without locking the wheels. If the vehicle starts to skid, ease pressure from the pedal and then reapply. Press the clutch in just before you stop. Safe winter motoring!

s winter progresses the lakes are continuing to fill up with ducks and the numbers will tend to peak now in December. Even if you are a beginner to bird watching there is nothing quite like sitting in a bird hide and watching ducks peacefully feeding on the lake with the occasional squabble. As a duck watcher you can start to sort out the different species by observing how they feed. The pintail, a duck with a long neck and as the name suggests a long tail too, is a dabbling duck. It feeds by dabbling its beak in the water sifting out plants and insects. Another dabbler is the wigeon which feeds on aquatic plants and can also be seen out of the water grazing the grass on the banks. The shoveler also dabbles but in a much more entertaining way! It uses its huge spatula like bill to sift the water but at the same time will often spin round and round in an

attempt to create currents in the water which bring the food to them. Look out for groups of shoveler congregating together and spinning around collectively, an impressive site when in large numbers! Moving away from the water and into the woodland, bird watching continues to be enjoyable as the bare trees leave fewer places for the birds to hide. The woodland hide is always busy as birds flock to the feeders for an easy meal, with winter visitors to look out for including siskin, redpoll and brambling. To discover the historical back story behind many of Blashford’s more familiar birds, join local author and wildlife photographer Dr Simon Wills for an evening talk on Tuesday 5th December, from 7.30pm until 9.30pm. Hopefully, you’ll come away having been entertained, and with some good tales to share next time you’re waiting in a hide for a bittern or kingfisher to appear! Please book your

The first fungi of the year will also be starting to show. The scarlet elf cup feeds on dead wood and thrives in our wet woodland habitats. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. History

ur favourite confectionery, chocolate dates back four thousand years to Central America where indigenous Indian tribes produced an antecedent very different to today’s. Although debated, the word chocolate is said to come from the Mayan term ‘xocalatl’ meaning ‘bitter water’. It was the Mayans who first cultivated the cacao plant growing in the rainforests of Mesoamerica - an area that today encompasses Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. They fermented, roasted and ground the beans of the plant into a paste that they would mix with water and spices to produce a potent frothy bitter liquor. Drunk cold, it was an aphrodisiac with magical mood-enhancing properties.

On conquering the Mayans, the Aztecs - who lived in the mountains where cacao did not grow naturally demanded a tax in cacao seeds so that they could control and cultivate the beans themselves. Cacao seeds became a currency for the Aztecs and were used to buy everything from produce to prostitutes! Believed to be a gift from their god of creation and wisdom, Quetzalcoatl, cacao was so precious that chocolate was reserved for those of importance such as rulers,

The History of Chocolate by Catherine Rose warriors and priests, and often drunk from gold vessels during religious ceremonies. Women were not permitted to partake. Conquistadors took chocolate back to Spain in the 16th century where they added sugar to sweeten it. Soon, the custom of drinking chocolate had spread across Europe. Cocoa plantations were set up in tropical regions of the various colonies. It wasn’t until 1828 that the solid sweet chocolate we know today was born. Casparus van Houten invented the hydraulic cocoa press which separated cocoa butter (contained in the bean’s nib) from cocoa mass. This ground mass became the basis for modern chocolate. Casparus’ son Coenraad van Houten, a chemist, continued his father’s work, adding alkaline salts to remove the naturally bitter taste. By using the ‘Dutching method’ that combined and heated the mass with water, cocoa butter and sugar, Coenraad produced a thick chocolate paste which then hardened inside moulds into a delicious confectionery. When van Houten’s patent expired in 1836, other companies started manufacturing their own chocolate. In 1847, J.S.

Fry & Sons produced the first commercial chocolate bar in England. Although it was not as palatable as the chocolate we eat today, people were enthralled, and the company launched their eponymous Fry’s Chocolate Cream in 1866. That same year, Richard and George Cadbury, philanthropists who had taken over their father’s cocoa business, purchased one of van Houten’s cocoa presses. They began producing boxes of chocolates at their Birmingham factory. In 1875 they unveiled their first dark chocolate Easter egg filled with chocolate dragees. The Swiss have long been at the forefront of chocolatemaking and in the same year that Cadbury produced its first Easter egg, the first milk chocolate bar was made by a Swiss confectioner named Daniel Peter after he added condensed milk to the chocolate-making process. Then in 1879, Rodolphe Lindt invented the conching machine. The machine agitated the chocolate mixture and revolutionised its texture, making a much smoother, more velvety paste. The early part of the 20th century saw an explosion in the availability of chocolate with names that are still popular 100 years later. Cadbury’s Dairy Milk was launched in 1905 made with ‘more milk than any other chocolate bar’. In 1914, Fry’s Turkish Delight was produced. Then in 1915, Milk Tray came onto the market - the first box of chocolates affordable to all.

Golden Celebrations for Blind Club

ingwood and Fordingbridge Club for the Blind will see some special celebrations in 2018. In January it is the tenth anniversary of their status as a registered charity, and in July it will be the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the club in 1968. Despite its longevity, the ethos of the club remains the same, that is to provide support and services to visually impaired people who live in Ringwood and surrounding areas.

A committed team of volunteers oversees the administration of the club and provides all of the services which include home visits, if required, or transport to and from the fortnightly meetings where members enjoy a variety of entertainment and an afternoon tea. Liz Crocker has been a volunteer with the club for over twenty years and said “The club

remains as popular as ever. It is lovely to see members enjoying time socialising and it is the company of others that is so important”. Rosemary Anderson has been visually impaired her whole life and joined the club sixteen years ago at what was a particularly difficult time for her. She said “The club really helped me get back on my feet and regain my confidence. It is everything to me”. Rosemary now organises the entertainment programme for her fellow members. Meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, 2.15 to 4.15pm at Greyfriars Activity Centre in Ringwood.
