Dear Readers,

o doubt like me you probably thought scam emails and letters are a scourge of the internet age, but surprisingly they have been with us for around 150 years, as in the 1870s for only $75 you could buy $1500 of the ‘best and safest’ counterfeit money! A special feature on page 36 has a potted history of the Post Office which explains all and even why it was called Royal Mail. Also on this subject we have the Christmas posting dates on page 43. If you are a chocoholic combined with a terrible sweet tooth then don’t look at the beauty article on page 40! Here you’ll find a selection of gift ideas for those special people like teachers, best friends, yourself and especially chocoholics with a special chocolate and

with best wishes,

marshmallow face mask packaged with a bar of Green & Black’s chocolate! I would be very tempted to try it although the combination with pink clay might make it rather gritty of course! Ringwood’s annual Christmas Eve carols in the Market Place is always a great way to put you in the festive mood. It’s a very sociable occasion as most of the town seems to turn up! Don’t forget if you want to treat a loved one AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 46! Finally my team and I would like to wish all our readers and advertisers old and new the very warmest of festive greetings for this Christmas and the New Year.

ROUNDABOUT RINGWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE & SURROUNDING VILLAGES

NOW and THEN Article and photo kindly supplied by Mary Baldwin

T

Champion Hair Salon and Co-op Funeralcare High Street, Ringwood.

hese two premises were possibly built as one 1988 house during the 18th century but by Victorian times the house had been split into two properties. The right half became Ringwood’s first Post Office run by postmistress Miss Sarah Benson for 36 years, as described in a Now and Then article in 2008. (Go to www.roundaboutmags.co.uk and click on Articles/News – Ringwood Now and Then Post Office High Street). After the new post office opened in Southampton Road in 1909, the old property became a shop with a new shop front, for many years Palmer’s jewellers. This shop was then left shuttered up for well over a decade until it re-opened as Ringwood Book Shop, 3234 High Street in the 1980s. Since then it has a number of different occupiers and is now Champion hair salon owned by Daniel Champion. During the 19th century the half of the original house on the left remained a private November 2018

dwelling named The Haven. In 1871 this was occupied by Isaac Veal, a retired brewer whose brewery was in what is now the oldest part of the Furlong Centre, around John Grant estate agency. Twenty years later after she retired from the Post Office it became the home of Miss Sarah Benson and her niece Mary. Miss Mary Benson was a talented Professor of Music who became the organist for the Parish Church. Sometime after Mary’s death in1925 this house was split into two shops, shown in the 1988 photograph as Thorners shoe repairs at 38 High Street and Ringwood Fisheries at number 36. About 2010 the fish shop which belonged to Mike Patterson transferred over the High Street to be adjacent to his butcher’s shop. Numbers 36 and 38 were once again combined and given a completely new shop front to become Co-op Funeralcare.

Forest Forge Theatre celebrates milestone

ingwood based Forest Forge Theatre Company has celebrated 21 years at their purpose-built building in Endeavour Park Industrial State. The charity itself has enjoyed over 37 years production and creating theatre that reaches over 30,000 people per year. In 1997 the permanent residence for Forest Forge Theatre Company was created through a National Lottery Grant in the business park off Crow Arch Lane in Ringwood and on 28th September the 21st birthday celebrations took place at the theatre to mark this milestone. Attendees included the Mayor and Mayoress of Ringwood, Cabinet Member Councillor James Binns, and Ringwood Councillor Gloria O’Reilly, plus many who had been involved in the theatre over its 37 years. The celebrations showcased the building’s unique features with installations, displays, and performances from the Forest Forge

Youth Theatre. Speeches were made by CEO/ Creative Producer Sharon Lawless, Cabinet Member Councillor James Binns, Chairperson of the Forest Forge Board Miranda Whitehead, Creative Learning Director Lucy Philips, previous members of the Youth Theatre Megan Purdie and Tom Andrews, and current member of their adult drama group ‘Act Your Age’ Lynne Deacon. When asked to cut the cake, Ringwood Mayor Tony Ring said a few words which were full of encouragement and support. CEO/Creative Producer Sharon Lawless said, “Forest Forge is above all a charity that relies on funding and support to help fund the important work we do. The building is the heart and home for everything we create that heads out to schools, tours to communities, and works with community projects. It’s been a wonderful base for the past 21 years and we look forward to the next 21 years and more!”

The Gift of a Great Read Stuck for the perfect present this Christmas? Or need some inspiration for your own wish list? Read on…

Book Reviews

FOR HISTORICAL FICTION FANS Washington Black – Esi Edugyan 11-year-old slave Washington Black is taken from the sugar fields and lent to his tyrannical master’s brother, Titch, to work on a ‘cloudcutter’ hot air balloon. The duo form an unlikely friendship that, coupled with Washington’s artistic talent, could provide a way out of slavery. FOR HISTORY BUFFS Bloody Brilliant Women – Cathy Newman This book uncovers the ‘pioneers, revolutionaries and geniuses your history teacher forgot to mention’. Read about women such as engineer Beatrice Shilling, whose work played a role in helping RAF pilots in the Battle of Britain, and developmental biologist Anne McLaren, whose work paved the way for IVF.

FOR FOODIES Tasty Ultimate From quick and easy midweek dinners, to showstopping dinner party favourites, Tasty has them all. Recipes include Nashville Hot Turkey Tenders, Roast Pork Tex Mex Burritos, The Best Crispy Chicken Parmesan, SlowCooked Honey and Spice Lamb Shank, and Latte Coffee Cake. Recipes are simple to follow and bright photographs make every dish look mouthwateringly tempting. FOR ROMANTIC FICTION FANS A Miracle on Hope Street – Emma Heatherington When she learns that one act of kindness has transformed a man’s life, Ruth decides to put her own loneliness aside and create a Christmas to remember for people in need. A heart-warming tale that’s perfect for fans of JoJo Moyes and Marian Keyes. FOR PARENTS Parent Alert, How To Keep Your Kids Safe Online – Nadia Sawalha, Kaye Adams and Will Geddes Thousands of kids will be receiving new smartphones or tablets this Christmas. But how do you make sure they’re not being bullied, giving too much information away to strangers or being targeted by predators? This book gives parents lots of actionable

advice on how to keep kids safe online. FOR HARRY POTTER FANS The Crimes of Grindelwald – The Original Screenplay Albus Dumbledore enlists Newt Scamander to recapture Gellert Grindelwald, who’s recently escaped and is gathering followers. This is the second in the Fantastic Beasts series. It’s a screenplay of the recently released film, rather than a traditional novel, so it’s quicker to read but no less enjoyable. FOR YOUNG CHILDREN The Jolly Christmas Postman – Janet and Allan Ahlberg This is an all-year-round favourite in our house. The Jolly Postman sets off to deliver letters and parcels to fairytale characters. Kids aged three and up will love opening each envelope to reveal the surprise inside – whether it’s a Christmas card for Baby Bear, a jigsaw for Humpty Dumpty or a game for Red Riding Hood. FOR OLDER CHILDREN A boxset Head to www.thebookpeople. co.uk to pick up a boxset. When I checked there were lots to choose from, including twelve Diary of a Wimpy Kid books for £14.99, ten How to Train Your Dragon books for £17.99, fifteen Roald Dahl favourites for £21.99, and six David Walliams books for £23.99. Bargains galore.

s winter progresses the lakes continue to fill up with ducks, with numbers tending to peak in December. Even if you are a beginner to bird watching there is nothing quite like sitting in a bird hide and watching them peacefully feed on the lake, using any observations you make of their feeding habits to help with identification. The wigeon is a dabbling duck which feeds on aquatic plants and can also be seen out of the water grazing the grass on the banks. As you sit in the hides listen out for its distinctive whistle which carries well across the lake. The shoveler also dabbles but in a much more entertaining way! It uses its huge spatula like bill to sift the water but at the same time will often spin round and round in an attempt to create currents in the water which bring the food to them.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. www.hiwwt.org.uk

The black and white male tufted duck is a diving duck, so you will see it diving down in to the water to catch its dinner. The goosander also dives down and is a member of the sawbill family, named after the serrated edge to its bill which helps it to catch fish. Moving away from the water and into the woodland, bird watching continues to be enjoyable as the bare trees leave fewer places for the birds to hide. One bird that is more easily seen here than in other woods is the treecreeper. A small brown bird with a striking white tummy and curved pointy beak could be mistaken for a mouse as it moves up the trunks of trees with small hops in search of insects and spiders. The woodland hide is always busy as birds flock to the feeders for an easy meal. Winter visitors to look out for include siskin, redpoll and brambling.

Of course Blashford Lakes isn’t just brilliant for birds. As we move in to the new year the first flowers of the year will start to appear. Small patches of snowdrops can be seen along the river and the first fungi of the year will also be starting to show. The scarlet elf cup feeds on dead wood and thrives in our wet woodland habitats. As the name suggests it is a bright red cup shaped fungus creating a welcoming splash of colour amongst the leaf litter. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

DS-7 - Tres Chic, Magnifique! 16

DS-7 Crossback ‘Performance’ Interior

styling, hampered by premium pricing. So this car had to be examined much more closely and critically. My car was resplendent in gorgeous deep red pearlescent metallic offset by a large black grille and bright detailing- truly a kerbside hero!. The power train was 225bhp petrol driven 8-speed automatic and with ‘Performance’ interior trim. This was in a suede-look charcoal grey with red piping and discrete bright finish - with mood lighting it looked a million dollars. So, a fantastic visual first impression. Find the ‘start’ button, fire her up to a very distant shush, characteristic throughout my test. Intriguingly, the whole dashboard area lit up to reveal all kinds of ‘goodies’ we now expect from sat-nav to lane departure warning - the crux of it being that the instrument panel was extensively customisable from minimalist to information overload. Regrettably, no heritage round dials to suit this critical old duffer though! In summary a lovely design, great quality and close attention to detail very impressive indeed. You find out about how any car suits mainly by driving it in a variety of circumstances. In the case of this DS-7, you’d be tickled pink if you tend to enjoy the driving experience. Take a deep breath and open your mind. Here

is a delight to start and move forward using the 8-speed auto or changing gear manually, trickle through urban traffic and notice it behaves like a highly trained police dog - relaxed yet alert and responsive. Show it the open road and it behaves like a greyhound, rewarding every input with precision and alacrity. Ask it to perform and it will overtake extremely rapidly and without fuss. Then look at the driving statistics and note how efficiently and economically it can cover ground at up to 40mpg, astounding! So this car has zillions of personality and delights if that’s what you want. A diesel - with much more economy and broad range of ‘punch’ - has the creamy 180bhp diesel and the same 8-speed auto box. This car has similar emissions to the petrol version, the diesel pollutes NO MORE. Personally, I would sacrifice a few electronic secondary safety aids to hold the price down - but go for the ‘Grip Control’ which gives this 4x2 a similar performance to a full 4x4. I’d also tick the option of the opening moon-roof. In brief, I want one!

Mike's Motors

N

ow although I am open to anything new, I’m not one to accept it unquestioningly. Groupe Peugeot announced a few years ago that it was inventing a whole new vehicle brand called ‘DS’. Initially it was composed of existing upmarket versions of previously Citroen branded vehicles. They had hi-jacked the model name of arguably the most iconic ever French Citroen model, the stillfashionably chic DS from the 1960s. So, I had a long list of sceptical questions especially as those pre-existing offerings - despite having many visual and equipment enhancements - remained recognisably Citroen. Then last year the brand new DS-7 was announced. Using the basic shape of the new Peugeot 3008, almost everything changed and yet another car-to-SUV crossover was born to join the many from virtually all other car makers already on the market. It was difficult to see a good business case for this vehicle, despite its luxury specifications and its unusual

There’s something wild about Brownsea!

D

orset Wildlife Trust is launching an exciting new project designed to bring people in Dorset closer to nature called Wild Brownsea and needs your help to secure the future of a unique island. Over the next three years we will look to upgrade the visitor facilities on the island’s nature reserve but we need to reach our fundraising target by January 2019, for every £1 you donate the wildlife of Brownsea gets £10. For such a small island Brownsea has had an eventful past and now looks to play an equally important role in the future of wildlife conservation in Dorset. It has been gifted by Kings and Queens, set alight and bombed by the Luftwaffe in WWII and even hosted the first Boy Scout camp in 1907.

Nicki Tutton; our Brownsea Island Engagement Officer talks passionately about the project; “Having worked and volunteered on the island for so long, I can see its amazing potential to inspire the public, as it inspired me, and to make the most of the opportunity to encourage future generations to care about wildlife and conservation.” With our fundraising deadline fast approaching we need your help in reaching our target before January 2019. Total project costs are estimated at £1.2million. We have already managed to secure 90% of the funds, but we simply need your support to reach the final target. Please help us realise our vision for the Brownsea Island Nature Reserve, by supporting our Wild Brownsea project www.dorsetrwildlifetrust.org.uk/wildbrownsea

egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.

If you are not helped by the traditional answers about community, compassion, and what life’s all about, perhaps you instead need to find people who keep playing with and celebrating the questions.

Should I stay or should I go now?

I

f you are wondering whether you should stay in a relationship or not, often there is not a direct answer. You could look at the confusion this question is causing you. The confusion is probably based upon doubt and fear and not having the ability to make a choice to move your life forward. Certain types of thinking tie us in this confused state. One of these thoughts might be to do with fantasy or romantic idealisation. There are many fantasy thoughts we have about our relationships which distort the reality of the situation. We often turn to nostalgic thoughts, to avoid the more uncomfortable, often painful thoughts about leaving a relationship. We can distract ourselves with the warm loving feelings we had with our partner in the past. We can use a false loyalty to convince ourselves to stay in relationships that we know are not working. The chances are that if you are reading this article you have given yourself a second or third chance and bought yourself time to decide about the ending of the relationship. For many of us who have attachment issues we may ignore the call to action and may need to convince ourselves that we are not playing these fantasy games. Often when people get caught up in this indecision of ‘should I stay or should I go’ neither partner knows how to end the relationship. They get stuck in the potential or the hope of what the relationship could be like or they want it to be. They may even want their partner to be the one to end the relationship. However, we then have to manage our feelings of rejection and abandonment wounds which are potentially more emotionally damaging.

The History of Playing Cards by Catherine Rose 17th Century painting of card players by Theodoor Rombouts

T

raditionally, family board and card games are often enjoyed over the Christmas period. There are many variations of board game, both old and new, but the pack of cards, played for pleasure, prediction and profit, is now a global phenomenon that has endured for centuries.

History

It is believed that our modern day playing cards originated in China where, during the 1200s, games were played using numerical cards based on strings of coins. Old Chinese coins had a hole in the middle so that they could be strung together, and the four card suits were called coins, strings of coins, myriads of strings and tens of myriads. From there, the concept of playing cards spread to India and Persia, and then through Egypt into southern Spain and the rest of Europe by the end of the 14th century. In Spain, the ‘Saracen’s Game’ used cards with a distinctly Islamic design, with motifs consisting of figures and numerals illustrated by the corresponding number of symbols, known as pips.

The Arab deck did not have a queen. Instead, it had the king (malik), prince or viceroy (naib malik) and a servant or deputy (thaim naib). The four original suits were cups, swords, coins and batons (or wands). One theory is that the apparently random symbols were interpreted from pictorial representations of the written Chinese ones. Known as the Latin deck, these original suits are still used in parts of the world. The suits were subsequently adapted by other European countries, notably Germany and France. The early German suits consisted of hearts (or sometimes roses), bells, acorns and shields. It is believed that the hearts suit evolved from cups. As with the Arab or Latin deck, there was no queen. Instead the Germans had a könig (king), obermann (higher man), and untermann (lower man). It was the French who changed the suits to the more well-known and enduring hearts, diamonds, clubs (or clovers) and spades. It is thought that spades may have

been derived from swords used in the Latin deck as the Spanish word for swords is espadas. Playing cards were imported into England in around 1480, but 150 years later imports were banned and so the country began manufacturing its own. During the 1800s, the traditional French picture cards were re-designed by Charles Goodall & Sons to become the iconic symbols we know so well today. The jokers or court jesters were two wild or trump cards that were introduced by the Americans in the mid-1800s and, although taken up as an integral part of the modern deck, are rarely used in card games. Playing cards have long been a symbol of decadence, mysticism and magic. A form of currency and conjuring, they can be a harmless pastime or a dangerous addiction that can win and lose fortunes as easily as the rise and fall of a house of cards.

Cusco The Inca Capital in Peru By Solange Hando

T

he Incas got it right. Up in the Andes, this was a great location for their capital, a remote plateau ringed by mountains and blessed by fertile valleys. Even today Cusco appears almost unreal, a hidden city basking in subtropical highlands at 3,400 metres. Eucalyptus rise in the thin mountain air, red-roofed houses clamber up the lower slopes and the sound of Andean flutes echoes along the streets.

Travel

Little is known about the early Killke settlers but the first Incas arrived in the 1200s, led by Manco Capac whose origins remain shrouded in legend. The city reached its apogee from 1438 onwards when, after defeating the Chacas, Pachacuti came to power. Ninth ruler and ‘world shaker’, he transformed the Inca kingdom into one of the world’s greatest empires and rebuilt the capital with highways, irrigation channels, terraced gardens, ceremonial plaza with a gold-covered altar, magnificent Temple of the Sun and other major buildings near the Saphi stream, the mythical origins of Cusco. That’s where the Spanish conquistadors entered the heart of the city in 1533,

described by their leader Francisco Pizarro as ‘very noble and great’ with palaces, regular streets and a temple studded with gold, ‘fabulous beyond belief’. The Incas attempted to regain control in 1536 but failed after a ten months siege. Now the time had come to build churches, convent, cathedral and more, using the old Inca walls as foundations. Earthquakes have often damaged the Spanish buildings but Inca walls survived and in 1983 Cusco became a Unesco site for its combined Inca and colonial heritage. The Santo Domingo Convent and Church is a striking example, built originally on the sacred site of Coricancha and the most important Temple of the Sun. Today one can still sense the haunting presence of the Incas drifting along the pre-Hispanic walls. Other popular churches include La Merced and the Jesuits’, both famous for their Cusco Baroque style, while in the cathedral the Quechua builders, descendants of the Incas, made sure they left their mark. Guides will point out the suggestive phallic symbols, dear to the Incas, carved on the choir stalls but most surprising of all is the 18th century painting of the Last Supper. Forget bread

and wine, here Jesus and the apostles are sharing Andean cheese, local fruit and a guinea pig, the traditional Peruvian dish. The cathedral opens on the Plaza de Armas, the colourful central square, which hosts two stunning festivals in June, the religious Feast of Corpus Christi and on the 24th - the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere - the Inca Festival of the Sun. A gentle stroll from the plaza, the artisans’ district of San Blas is a different world, winding through a maze of steps and alleyways where a mysterious twelveangled stone holds pride of place in one of the bestpreserved Inca walls. But on the hilltop above town, the largest stones of any Inca archaeological site are found in the Saksayhuman fortress, built by the Killke then massively extended by Pachacuti. Meanwhile, just along the path, a giant statue of Christ looks down on the old capital still shaped like a puma, the sacred animal of the Incas. With its rich heritage and vibrant colours, Cusco is indeed a lovely place to explore before heading to Machu Picchu on the scenic rail journey or one of the high altitude treks for the truly adventurous.

PORTRAIT OF A LOCAL ARTIST - Jason Anthony Being wrapped up snug and with the fresh cold sea air, it really does clear the fog and allow the creative juices to flow – Jason Anthony

J

ason Anthony is an independent artist and furniture designer specialising in pieces made from an eclectic mix of seasoned wood and resin. Having always had a creative mind and a keen interest in woodworking, in 2013 he turned his hobby and passion into a full-time business crafting unique pieces of furniture and art. Jason explains where he found the inspiration for his most recent work known as the Ocean Collection - a stunning collection of wooden coffee tables.

Still Waters

father would always wake us at 4am after a big storm to travel to the Jurassic coast around Charmouth so we could be the first on the beach at the crack of dawn to seek the new rocks that had been washed up in the storm and hopefully find the ones that contained fossils.” On a recent visit to Durdle Door, a beautiful spot along the Jurassic coast just outside Poole in Dorset, Jason was looking for inspiration when he happened upon some drift wood on the shore with the waves lapping against it. It reminded him of the rugged cliffs and the sea crashing against them and was struck by this image and wanted to reflect it in a piece of furniture.

He says “I am lucky enough to live and have a studio in the New Forest National Park in Hampshire and I am also a short drive from the south coast. I am so fortunate to be located in this beautiful part of the country and have such an amazing array of natural beauty on my doorstep to inspire me. From the tranquillity of the New Forest, with its wonderful array of flora, fauna and quaint villages, to the rugged coastline and seas of the Jurassic coast, a UNESCO world heritage site that stretches from Orcombe Point in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset.”

Jason adds “My latest Ocean Collection of coffee tables was inspired by my visit to Durdle Door. So off I went to various saw mills in search of some beautiful pieces of English Oak with just the right character that I felt reflected the Jurassic Coast. I then crafted several pieces using the natural beauty and character of the oak with all its faults to reflect the ruggedness of the cliffs.” Jason’s Ocean Collection can be seen on his website: www.jasonanthony.co.uk or call: 07957 136383 to discuss a bespoke commission.

“Growing up as a child in the area I have always been struck by the natural beauty of the rugged Jurassic coast. I love nothing more than wrapping up warm in the winter and going for a walk along the coast. As a child my

Parcels Peculiarities and the Postal Service Photo of Royal Mail Coach at The Science Museum. Credit Martinvl, Wikimedia Commons.

Special Feature

It was World Post Day on 9th October, but how was our own postal service created? NON-HUMBLE BEGINNINGS A royal dispatch system existed even in Edward IV’s reign, but it was Henry VIII who created the Master of the Posts role and Brian Tuke who truly founded the service. Tuke, who became a knight and Master of the Posts in 1516, used his experience of continental postal services and his influence to create a formal postal network. In each key town he nominated, three horses were used to transport mail. Their stable was called a post, hence our mail system’s nickname. But this service was truly Royal Mail, solely for the King and court. Common folk had to wait for Charles I to open up the King’s Posts to everyone in 1635. Cromwell’s more formal Office of Postage covered the whole Commonwealth, but once the monarchy was restored this was replaced by the General Post Office, a genuinely public service. By this time, senders rather than recipients were paying the postage, and by 1661 letters were also being date-stamped – to mitigate complaints about delays.

Royal Mail was privatised in 2011 and the UK government sold its remaining shares in 2015, ending 499 years of public ownership. PRIVACY AND PECULIARITY Long before the internet, retaining privacy in communication while ensuring security was problematic. Oliver Cromwell’s Principal Secretary of State, John Thurloe, regularly intercepted mail for intelligence purposes, but if he hadn’t, Sexby’s plot to assassinate Cromwell may never have been discovered. As for scam emails, they’re merely descendants of scam letters. In the 1870s, many US citizens received letters from someone claiming they had been given their name by a friend and offering $1,500 of ‘the best and safest’ counterfeit money for $75 of genuine cash (or a bargain $30,000 for $400). On the other hand, Oscar Wilde, whom you might have expected to value his privacy given the times he lived in, is rumoured to have thrown his stamped letters into the street, relying on the good nature of passers-by to pick them up

and post them. Far more peculiar were the antics of Willie Reginald Bray, who was inspired to test the limits of the postal service by its own 1898 guide. Among other things, it promised to send creatures through the post, including a live bee, ‘if confined in a suitable receptacle’. Bray took a dog to the post office, which was ‘posted’ via a walk with an obliging postman, and even posted himself once. It’s also believed that in December 1899, he became the first person to send a postcard to Santa Claus Esq. Finally, while Lewis Carroll is now viewed as something of a dubious character by many, some of the advice in his letter-writing guide is still relevant today. He advised always placing a cheque or document in the envelope before you finish writing the letter, lest you forget to put it in. Wise words indeed. Gifted Inspiration by Kate Duggan FOR FRAGRANCE FANS If you’re looking to surprise someone with a new fragrance, Angel Muse could be a good choice. It might be Angel’s little sister, but it’s lighter, warmer and a bit more grown-up. The freshness of grapefruit and pink berries is combined with the warmth of hazelnut and the earthiness of patchouli and vetiver. The giftset is priced at £65, which gets you the full 50ml eau de parfum plus a handbag-friendly 9ml bottle.

Beauty

FOR TEACHERS Teachers often need to wash their hands several times a day, so a soothing hand cream is likely to be gratefully received. Dr. Organic’s Shea Butter Hand & Nail Cream is full of natural ingredients, including shea butter, aloe vera, coconut oil and rose oil. It provides instant relief for sore hands and feels lovely and rich. £7.99 from Holland and Barratt. FOR CRACKERS Planning to swap the plastic fish and silver keyrings for luxe cracker gifts? Bobbi Brown’s Lip Crush Kit (£39.50) might be the answer. There are five mini lipsticks in a range of wearable shades. They’re pretty generously sized so are good value if you consider that one full-size lippy is £24.50.

FOR CHOCOHOLICS Chocolate lovers will adore Akamuti’s Chocolate Marshmallow Face Mask. Organic cacao, crushed rose petals, gentle marshmallow, warming vanilla and detoxifying pink clay combine to make this mask a real treat for skin and senses. Add a bar of Green & Blacks to the gift and you’ll really make their day. £7.96 from www.akamuti.co.uk.

worth of products for £32 so it’s fantastic value for money. FOR YOU! Green People’s Green Regime Beauty Box contains £125 worth of fullsized and mini goodies for £75. There are two exfoliators, three moisturisers, a lipstick, mascara, eyeshadow duo, shampoo, shower gel, night

FOR A SECRET SANTA GIFT Clarins Festive Treats crackers are just £10 each. The Eyes & Lips one

is particularly good value for money as its contents (a mini Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector and Supra Volume Mascara) are worth a total of £17.33. FOR YOUR BEST FRIEND Origins’ Best of the Best collection is a celebration of their most popular products. There’s the Mega-Mushroom™ Skin Relief Soothing Treatment Lotion, Ginzing Refreshing Eye Cream, Ginzing EnergyBoosting Gel Moisturizer, Modern Friction™ Nature’s Gentle Dermabrasion, Clear Improvement™ Active Charcoal Mask, Checks and Balances™ Frothy Face Wash and Spot Remover Blemish Treatment Gel. Most are travelsized. You’re getting over £58

cream, cleanser, facial oil, reusable cleansing pad and organic cotton bandeau. All products are organic and cruelty-free. Treat yourself or add it to your Christmas wish list. FOR STOCKINGS Some giftsets are just made for splitting up and adding to stockings. Korres’ The Greatest Mini Shower Collection is a case in point. Six gorgeous smelling 40ml shower gels are just waiting to be popped into individual stockings. Add Kneipp’s Herbal Bath Collection (£9.95) to your basket for another six stocking fillers. Both sets are available from www.biggreensmile.com.
