n this issue we have an article entitled ‘Velvet Underground’ on page 23. Many of you baby Boomers out there - me being one - will assume it’s about the very avant garde band of the same name from the early 1970’s! But no - this is actually about moles of all things! Also known as ‘Velvet - coated Gentlemen’ and is our gardening article! Very annoying if you have them and rather difficult to evict apparently. On page 26 those of you who recall Velvet Underground will find another article which is really saying that 60 is the new 40 I suppose! wo High Street is one of Ringwood’s most loved buildings, especially the clock which has marked time at Fridays Cross for generations. The old photograph shows the property when it was Alfred George Hext the watchmaker’s shop in about 1890. Before him the shop had been owned by James Adams, another watchmaker and one of Ringwood’s earliest photographers. Mr. Hext took over about 1869, coming from Christchurch, where his father was also a watchmaker. Two years later the census shows George Hext was only 23, with a wife and two small children. Contrary to recent press reports that the clock has adorned the building’s facade since 1800, the clock has now been expertly dated to around 1875, which confirms the oral tradition that it was George Hext who put it there. This is also proved by a photograph of the floral arch erected at Fridays Cross in 1868 which clearly shows the clock was not on the building at that time. Mr & Mrs Hext went on to have

five more children, including James Hext who took over from his father in 1914, fol1988 lowed by Jim’s son Leslie after WWII. The 1988 photograph shows the shop, by then known as Webb & Hext, with its shutters down prior to the start of the day’s business. Sadly by this time the building had lost its chimneys and the glazing bars on the first floor windows. The brickwork had been painted and brown tiles added under the ground floor windows. The face of the clock which was originally black with gold numerals, had been replaced by an inferior dial painted blue.

After the business closed about 1990, the shop stood empty for four years until China Studio relocated there from Lynes Lane. Unfortunately a project by the Millennium Committee to restore the clock, which had fallen into disrepair, had to be abandoned. The owners tried very hard to keep the old clock ticking and in 2002 paid for it to be repaired. However for the last few years since the closure of the China Studio the clock has again stopped and the clock face itself is in dire need of restoration. Now the building has begun a new phase of its history as Fridayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tapas Bar and the present owner of the whole property Chris Wood has launched a fund to save the clock on www.savethe fridayscrossclock. co.uk. Hopefully the future of the clock will soon be secured and once again will mark the passing hours at Fridays Cross.

2017 looks promising for the Ringwood Arts Centre

he year 2017 looks like a very exciting one for the new landmark project, the Ringwood Arts Centre! Following the amazing support of the local community, ‘The Meaningful Start Appeal’ – which was launched in October last year – has now reached nearly £20,000. The aim of the Appeal is to raise enough money to ensure the first spade goes into the ground before the planning permission expires in February 2017. Once work has begun, planning permission will be secured for the foreseeable future. Once built, Ringwood Arts Centre will be a multi-purpose venue with the local community at its very heart. Situated at Greyfriars Community Centre, it will include all the facilities that are currently missing in the town including a 290-seat

theatre and widescreen cinema, a sports hall with sprung floor, and a modern activities centre. If you’d like to show your support for Ringwood Arts Centre, then keep your eyes peeled for the events they have planned this year: Comedian Phil Lowen at Greyfriars on 11th Feb; RMDS will be taking on Sweet Charity for their Spring Musical at Ringwood School; and most inspiring of all Ringwood Arts Centre will be holding their very own Open Evening in May to show off all that is Arts Centre! ith spring just around the corner, the nature reserve is full of activity with winter visitors feeding up in preparation for their departure whilst breeding residents gather nesting materials and get ready for a flurry of courtship. Lapwing will begin to display over Ibsley Water, their brilliant ‘peewit’ calls being instantly recognizable along with their wavering flip-floppy flight pattern. However the best courtship display to look out for is that of the elegant great crested grebe. In their elaborate display, both birds mirror the dance of the other, rising up out of the water and shaking their heads before offering up gifts of weed. The bittern should still be around until the end of March, with the reed beds in front of Ivy North hide being the best place to watch out for this secretive bird as it moves silently through the water in search of fish. Osprey will be migrating through at this time as well,

whilst if we’re lucky, the first of the sand martins will also be returning. As the temperature slowly rises, the welcoming rays of sunshine are enjoyed by the first butterflies of the year; these include brimstone, comma and peacock. Reptiles will also be tempted out by the warmth of the sun and it is a good time of year to spot adders and grass snakes alongside the edge of the paths as they are still quite slow and sluggish after the long cold winter. On the ground the leaves of many plants are pushing through the soil, including lots of wild arum. Arum is a fairly common and widespread plant with a distinctive flower spike pushing up inside a cup-like leafy structure. It has many alternative old country names including ‘cuckoo pint’ and ‘lords and ladies’. It is, perhaps, better known from the stage once the bright red berries have formed. As this is the main ‘cross over’ period from winter into

spring, it is always worth a visit to the reserve with a pair of binoculars, or a camera, to see those preparing to leave and those preparing to nest. Why not join Reserves Officer Bob Chapman for a walk in search of our Winter Birds on Sunday 5th or Thursday 16th February, or visit a little later for a Finchfest in search of flocks of brambling, siskin and redpoll on Thursday 2nd March. Now to make your choice of which options to implement - or not. The range is dazzling - especially on highly specified cars. I suspect Peugeot will include an explanatory manual with the car - a demonstration mode gives a good overview of just what might be essential or useful to you. Suffice to say, it will take a while to learn where to find what you want to do - for instance the instrument display was intrusively bright when driving on dark winter roads, but finding the instrument dimmer evaded me completely - yet a Peugeot employee showed me how in a second! The lesson is, be prepared to budget a while to familiarise yourself with what can be tailored to your taste, and to then set the car how you want it before you ever turn a wheel. First of all we look at the mandatory safetyenhancing functions, which can be described as fully autonomous. These naturally include the familiar standard braking and stability functions (ABS, EBD, DSC) but in this car are extended by always-on SOS in case of accident or breakdown because a dedicated SIM

card is built in - thus independent of the usual reliance upon communicating through your own smart-phone. Automatic emergency braking control will mitigate or avoid a crash during any moment of inattention or misjudgement - this feature has yet to become mandatory. It includes pedestrian, car and immovable object recognition. Driver attention warning is similarly important and standard across the range. Semi-autonomous items which can be modified or cancelled include adaptive cruise control (something which I believe needs to be mandatory), speed limit detection, lane-keeping aid and blind spot detection. Other options include LED headlamps which auto-dip auto-swivel and autoset to compensate for loaded attitude, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera and auto-park in vertical or horizontal mode - accelerate and brake remaining driver responsibility. Add to this a fully-featured suite of satellite navigation via the touch-screen, an excellent DAB radio with further

megawatt sound an option by ‘Focal’, USB, WiFi and bluetooth connection. The climate control is fully customisable including a wide range of cabin ambiences including scents, mood lighting and finally driving instrument selection. This latter is one of the primary reasons to become au fait with all the options before ever driving off. This instrument array can be minimalist, then run through a whole range of colours and layouts to suit each individual driver. Then of course there is the Grip Control facility which can be run in a variety of modes dependant upon the surface being traversed. hey may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite! So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below?

tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding. The noise and vibrations created as the wind whistles

Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and can make the lawn surface slippery. Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or vegetable plots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the

These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke. However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once the smell has subsided the mole may return.

Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next. Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden - so they are not a method I recommend. If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings!

Yvonne’s Ladies & Gents Hairdressing

vonne’s in West Street has been a hairdressing salon since 1939 when it was run by Mrs Doris Rawlinson. Yvonne knew from an early age that she wanted to be a hairdresser and finished her training at Robert Fielding’s School of Hairdressing in Regent Street in the late 1970’s which was one of London’s top hairdressing schools at the time. In 1980 Yvonne who was just 21 and her husband Andre who had also been trained in London bought the business.

Nicola has been with Yvonne for 4 years and decided to go into hairdressing after having four children! She is now blossoming into a very good hairdresser. Blake is from Ringwood and has just completed his apprenticeship gaining a distinction and is just starting to build his clientele. Blake, Yvonne and Nicola.

The salon then was called ‘Yvonandres’. There were two salons in the early days, one upstairs and one downstairs and both were very successful and trained many youngsters - many of whom are still hairdressing today. Hairdressing styles are always changing and the team at Yvonne’s are able to cater for all aspects of hairdressing - from perms to the latest styles and colours.

In 2002 Yvonne took over the salon which was renamed ‘Yvonne’s Hairdressing’ after Andre retired due to ill health. Many clients have been a customer of Yvonne’s for 20 years or more - one lady has been a client since the 1960s - even before it was Yvonne’s! Yvonne’s Hairdressing now also includes Nicola and Blake who are the new members of her team.

Do You Let Your Age Do The Talking? by Kate McLelland

he invitation arrived via social media: “A group of us are going to Glastonbury Festival for the day. Do you fancy coming along, too?” I’d loved going to Glastonbury when I was young - the mud, the dodgy burgers from a van, the opportunity to bond with thousands of other young music fans, but now, at the age of 56, I just couldn’t see myself fitting in. Almost without thinking, I replied that I would be busy on the day my friend had suggested, but as I pressed ‘send’, I immediately regretted my decision. My husband and I have watched Glasto on TV many times in recent years and each time we’ve seen people older than ourselves in the crowd. This reaction made me realise that since turning 40 I have begun to censor everything I do, looking at life through an ‘age appropriate’ lens rather than thinking about what I really wanted. It was a sobering thought, but within ten minutes I had come up with a list of things I could do differently in future:

MuM and dad dancing The jokes about “Dad dancing” have no doubt been responsible for millions of older men making an excuse to visit the loo as soon as the music starts playing at a family wedding. We’re all probably a little self conscious when it comes to dancing, particularly if our kids are watching, but provided you’re not planning to moonwalk or point at the ceiling, Saturday Night Fever style, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t strut your stuff on the dance floor. From now on, although I may not be the first on the dance floor, I certainly won’t be the last. don’t be an ageconscious shopper Worries about not dressing appropriately for our age can hold us back when choosing what to wear. We opt for ‘safe’ styles that often have the effect of making us feel even older than we are. It may have been different in the Seventies and Eighties, but these days you’ll find a real cross-section of ages browsing through the clothing rails. Short skirts, revealing tops, body-hugging clothing and

huge heels will still be out for me, but I’m giving myself permission to drop into some of the more youthful stores I used to shun, just in case there’s something that catches my eye. You’re never too old for adventure We may be less physically able than we once were, but this doesn’t rule us out from ever enjoying another adventure. Nowadays we may be more inclined to stay in a hotel than camp out at a music festival, but at least we are still taking part. Next time I receive an invitation from friends to go somewhere unusual, I won’t come up with the kneejerk response of saying (or thinking) “I’m too old for that.” As older people we have surely earned our place in society? That means we have every right to enjoy life and express ourselves without fear of an adverse reaction. Teenagers are blissfully unconcerned about the views of their elders, and recently I’ve come to the conclusion that older people should take a leaf out of their book. I’ve decided that even if I live to be 100, nothing can stop me from living my life to the full.

Out at work during the day? Here’s how to keep your dog entertained

f you work full time or even part time, your dog may be feeling a little bored or lonely. When boredom sets in the result is often shredded carpets and wobbly table legs, but there are plenty of things you can do to distract them when you’re not there. • Fill a sturdy treat ball with peanut butter, canned dog food, and small biscuits. It’s a good idea to use a few different types of food within the ball so that their interest doesn’t wane. • Set up a ‘treasure hunt’ by hiding some plain dog biscuits or dental chews around the house, or wherever they’re allowed to roam if you limit access to some rooms. • Buy an interactive dog toy that stimulates their brain and sparks interest on and off throughout the day. They’ll have to figure out how to get the small treat from underneath each puzzle, and most games like this incorporate various different types of puzzle to really get them thinking. • Rotate your dog’s toys each day so they don’t get bored having constant access to them all. You could even use small toys as a treasure hunt idea instead of, or as well as, hiding food. Keeping your dog entertained while you’re out just takes a little thought and preparation. It’ll be worth it though to come home to a house that’s still in one piece.

Pants get hung from one clip, tights or socks from the other, and the rest of the uniform goes on the other hanger. Simple. My next mission is to teach them to put their PJs under their pillow, rather than dumping them on the floor. We’ve been working on that one for a while now, with no luck. Hair brushing is a source of tantrums the world over. The Wet Brush may save a fair few tears (theirs and

Children seem to have an innate ability to lose things. If you can’t be bothered to spend hours sewing

3008 - from Crossover to SUV

he Peugeot 3008 Crossover has been around since 2010 blending car-like qualities with a large interior space. While not the biggest seller in this niche - the significantly under-achieving Nissan Qashqai was first and most popular. Throughout its production run the 3008 has proven very popular across the world with an almost unbeatable combination of space, onroad refinement, ruggedness and most importantly decent performance with the superb economy for which Peugeots have become famed. But time for change. In the interim, the crossover segment has changed significantly and now customers are looking toward the taller, rugged off-roader ‘look’ of an SUV - yet wishing to retain hatch-like economy, practicality and refinement. Despite all its other qualities, you would be hard-pressed to ever see the old 3008 Crossover as good-looking in this sector - the stubby looks and rounded

surfaces are simply not popular any more. The Peugeot has stepped up to the challenge. The new 3008 SUV is an instant styling tour-de-force and really looks the part. Sensibly, in the interests of weight-saving and economy, Peugeot have resisted fitting four wheel drive - instead relying upon their incredible ‘Grip Control System’ as standard which operates on the front wheels to give almost everything you might wish from a 4wd - assuming you EVER need this facility in practice. I can tell you, it really works! So much for the great looks. Open the door to be greeted by a spacious interior, both in terms of out-and-out quality and in technical innovation - a real ‘wow!’ factor. This car uses the i-cockpit for which Peugeot cars are outstanding, with a lovely small steering wheel, all vital instruments clearly visible above the wheel, and a superbly comfortable driving position. The rear passengers have similar luxury with leg-room not so usual in this class,

while as a worthwhile detail ISO-fixing seat belts are standard on 3 of the 5 seats. Back to the i-cockpit where the technology on display is simply stunning in ANY class of car. From details such as a huge choice of display type and colours, through access to virtually every vehicle function via a menu-driven touch-screen to enable varying degrees of control by the car, including safety matters. This maybe the only weak point in this car - while sub-teenagers may be able to manipulate all the options to their liking in one nanosecond, for us older and wiser folk a long spell understanding all the options and their effects, will be mandatory. In the safety arena, on even the entry level car the most important functions are fixed such as auto emergency braking, cruise control, speed limit recognition, driver attention alert and Grip Control are standard - very impressive. Go up the model and options ladder to find lane keeping assistance, active cruise control and auto headlamp dip for instance. All this comes at a price. The entry level ‘Active’ model is very price-competitive, the range topping out at the GT model which has a huge amount of luxury including multi-way massage for the drivers seat and maybe just a little too much ‘bling’ and in this spec competing with the very poorly equipped base model Audi Q3. On the road, this car is excellent in any situation. Peugeot believe the 120 diesel in ‘Allure’ trim will capture most sales, and this too is very competitively priced. But I’ll have the 180bhp diesel GT, please!

isted by UNESCO and the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza claims the largest Maya site on the Yucatan peninsula. From their mysterious origins around 3000 BC to the Spanish conquest in the early 1500s, the Maya were never an empire but a collection of autonomous city-states with a diverse culture and people who all left their mark across the ancient sites. Great architects, mathematicians and astrologers, skilled craftsmen, the Maya enjoyed their golden age during the classic era, around AD 250900, though Chichen Itza continued to flourish into the next millennium and beyond as new settlers arrived. Named after the Itza tribe at the ‘the mouth of the well’, the stone city scatters its atmospheric remains deep in the rainforest. There’s much to see on its 15 square kilometres but the great stepped pyramid of Kukulcan casts its spell at first sight. Rising to a height of 24 metres, the four sides represent the cardinal points, each one with a stairway of 91 steps, the number of days between equinox and solstice. Add all the steps and one more to reach the top platform and that makes 365,

the solar year. But the magic doesn’t stop there. During the equinox, a strange zigzag shadow creeps down the north stairway and for the Maya, this was the ‘feathered serpent god’ slithering down from the sky. They were at ease with the duality of the world, life death, day night, earth sky, hence the feathered serpent and the carvings of birds alongside jaguars and snakes. ‘Clap your hands,’ suggest the guides and suddenly the echo turns into a spine-chilling squeak, the call of the quetzal, they say, the Maya’s sacred bird. The sound travels far and one can imagine the high priest invoking the gods from the pyramid, watched by the 20,000 strong crowd gathered below. But in the Maya world, religious rituals were not confined to the great pyramids. Chichen Itza boasts one of the largest surviving ball courts where warriors proved their worth, throwing heavy rubber balls through stone rings, eight metres above the ground, without using their hands. The rings were shaped like serpents, the high priest watched and on occasions, the winner would be sacrificed, for only the best should be offered to the gods. The sacred well had a

similar use, a 60 metre wide sacrificial sink hole said to be the ‘womb of Mother Earth’. The Maya’s written history was almost entirely destroyed by conquerors but stone friezes and carvings say it all. Among the many archaeological sites in this part of the world, Chichen Itza is unique for its similarities to Tula, the centre of the Toltec empire some 1,300 km away. The connection remains a mystery but both elements fuse beautifully, from the Temples of Warriors, Eagles, Venus and more to the striking complex of 1,000 pillars, the market where the slightest whisper can be heard across the square or the snail-shaped observatory used to study the sky. By late morning, when day trippers arrive from Cancun, stall holders set up their colourful ware in the main alleyway, Mayan masks jostling with mini-pyramids, hammocks, silver bangles and toy jaguars which roar as you walk past. But on this vast enticing site, there’s always a quiet place where you can stretch out your hand and almost touch the past. There, nothing disturbs the peace but the occasional gust of wind or the distant call of jungle birds.

Portrait of a Local Artist “I love the character of the Dorset landscape, especially the coastal landscape and some ﬁne gardens,” says artist Juliet Wood, who has fond memories of childhood holidays in Swanage. Recently Juliet has visited Dorset twice, staying in Martinstown village “to draw and paint the beautiful churchyard”. “What most inspires my work is the interaction of people, whether in an urban or coastal situation, and the atmosphere in a subject,” says Juliet. Juliet studied at St Albans School of Art and the Slade with William Coldstream, followed by a study year near Rome. Her 30 year teaching career in London, Marlborough, and Swindon School of Art and Design focused on life drawing and painting. Juliet is an oil painter, and also uses oil pastels. Portraiture has always been part of an ongoing commitment to the expression of human life. She is well established throughout Britain, with portraits in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Royal Society of Edinburgh, and many other public and private collections. Both her portraits and thematic paintings based on drawings vary from the small and intimate to the large and complex. Raising her five children contributed positively to both aspects of work, giving a deep understanding of human dynamics. A major Swindon project to encourage interest in visual art involved touring her series of paintings, Alone and Together, Brunel’s People to venues in Swindon and Southwark throughout 2013–14, launched by a public drawing event. She says of the paintings, “We are strangers while I draw.
