ere is a bit of a geography lesson for those of you who have walked up on Smugglers Path between Ringwood and Burley and not realised that you are looking across a Broad Bottom! Some of you may have also seen Slap Bottom whilst parked at Burbush Hill car park south of Burley before setting off along the Castleman’s Trailway towards Brockenhurst! Thankfully not as embarrassing as it sounds as our Quirky Britain article on page 14 explains. It’s all about the strange place names across Britain. And in case you weren’t aware - a bottom is actually the New Forest term for a valley and may contain a bog, a gutter or a lawn! We also have Balls and Butts of course - a ball being the term for a hill mainly in the North West of The Forest e.g. the well known

Sandy Balls holiday park and a Butt seems to be linked to ancient Tumuli or burial mounds so my husband thinks after inspecting his OS maps. The New Forest links us nicely to our ‘‘Great British Spring Clean’ article on page 16 which gives us details about this event on 2 - 4 March. This is a good opportunity to get out in The Forest to give it a jolly good spring clean and remove some of the rubbish and in particular, the dozens of plastic bottles that accumulate on the verges. I assume the perpetrators think that it will just ‘disappear’ magically! I see all sorts of rubbish including discarded nappies whilst out on our regular bike rides. It makes me feel very sad that people have this attitude within one of our most beautiful National Parks. So get out there and get organised!

12-14 High Street, Betfred, Ringwood. 1960s

he building shown in the1950s photograph, 12-14 High Street, is still recognisable today, although the ground floor has changed several times. Note that, like many properties in Ringwood, its central first floor window has been blocked up, probably as a result of the Window Tax. In the early part of the 20th century this house was occupied by widow Jane Gadsby, laundress, and her son Frank, a millwright. Frank later became a barber and also a photographer. By 1939 Brown’s Directory shows that his apprentice Harold MacKrell had taken over his hairdressing business in the small shop on the left, number 14. In 1948 Mr Gadsby was listed as still occupying 12 High Street with Watts & Faulkner, electrical contractors, at number 14. This suggests that the premises
had been split by that time. During the 1950s W C Brinton, building contractor, plumbing and electrical supplies, had his office and showroom at 14 High Street with his wife Mrs Brinton making lampshades to order. She later moved this business to Christchurch Road. In the 1960s there was a big change when estate agents Fox & Sons took over the whole building and put in a large new shop front as shown in the 1960s photo above. By 1970 Fox & Sons had moved to the Market Place and for a short time the building became the ‘Snackette’ bar and later the Orange Tree restaurant and Cafe Renoir. The 21st century brought further changes of shop front when 12-14 High Street became today’s betting shop, Betfred.

I
n the old days, we had combs, brushes and curling tongs – and that was about it. Now there’s more tech than you can shake a GHD straightener at, all of it promising to deliver luscious locks or silky-smooth skin. So which technology is actually worth having for your hair? There are two kinds of gadgets: gadgets 2 for getting rid of hair you don’t want, and gadgets for making the hair you do want look better. In the first camp we’ve long had electric razors, epilators and little personal trimmers, but lately they’ve been joined by lasers — well, light treatment anyway. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is one of the gentlest hair removal methods around, but you can’t do it if you’re about to go somewhere sunny, and it doesn’t work on lighter hair or very dark skin. Beware of any firm claiming to offer laser treatment from home devices: laser is a more powerful IPL and it’s the preserve of salon machines costing five figures. The best known IPL system is probably Philips’ Lumea, whose products are around the £250 - £350 mark. That’s a lot of money for a gadget, but if you have the right skin tone and hair colour it means no ingrowing hairs, waxing or other unpleasantness. It’s safe everywhere, too.
What about the hair you do want? The same pseudoscience that infests beauty products is in hair care too, with lots of big and cleversounding nonsense trying to convince us that a hairdryer is more than just a hairdryer. Sometimes a hairdryer is all you need. The biggest name in high-tech hairdryer technology is Dyson, whose unlovely (is it just us? It looks like, well, a Dyson) but very effective Supersonic costs £299. It’s very powerful, very quiet and stays cool to the touch, although we can’t help thinking we’re basically holding a hand dryer next to our heads. More modest technologies can make a big difference too. Straighteners with adjustable temperatures can help prevent too much frizz, especially with hair you’ve coloured, and straightening brushes such as BaByliss’s £50 2440BDU put the heat inside the hairbrush to great effect. The same firm has embraced the other big trend in haircare: straighteners that also style. The Smooth
& Wave Secret isn’t cheap – at £129.99 it’s up there with the luxury brands such as GHD – and it looks like a
4 weapon, but it’s enormously clever: hair is drawn into its ceramic chamber, held and preheated, and then it either uses Smooth Mode to straighten or Wave Mode for waves and curls. It goes up to 230 degrees for even the most untamed hair and takes just 15 seconds to warm up. That’s important: some rivals don’t like to point out that by the time their straighteners reach peak temperature, you could probably have grown a beard. It’s very important to shop around for products like the ones we’ve mentioned, as — with the exception of Dyson, which keeps a firm hold on its prices — they’re subject to constant aggressive discounting by supermarkets, beauty shops and online sellers. And it pays to be flexible when it comes to specific brands: the difference in price between Brand A with nice packaging and the slightly less cute Brand B can be staggering. 1. Garden Sculptures stolen
£200 reward has just been posted for the recovery or info leading to recovery of the stolen garden sculpture pictured as reported to Hampshire police. It was stolen on 5th Dec from a garden at Rockford and the owners are hoping to create as much publicity to warn other properties in the New Forest that thieves are in the area and stealing from gardens and outbuildings. Apparently weight is no problem as these weighed 500-600 lbs. One possibility is that drones are used to check out gardens as a drone was sighted 2 days before the deer were stolen which flew in low and has not been seen since. So owners of similar garden sculptures are warned to be vigilant and any information on the deer to contact Mr Willis on tarrantwillis@me.com
An opportunity to join the ‘My Guide’ Scheme

Would you like to be instrumental in helping someone to participate more fully in their local community and work towards greater independence? The charity Guide Dogs is currently seeking volunteers to do just that as part of their ground breaking My Guide scheme. The role involves providing sighted guide assistance to people who are living with sight loss to get out and about, to do the things they want to do. We currently have four people waiting and

they would really like to build up confidence in getting out and about with the overall aim of being able to go out independently. This exciting and fulfilling volunteering opportunity would suit someone who likes to get out and about and could spare 2/3 hours a week. Full ‘My Guide’ training and ongoing support and supervision are provided. Volunteers must be 18+ and would require a DBS check. World Glaucoma Week 11-17 March 2018
his annual global initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of regular eye tests to prevent sight loss from glaucoma. It is supported by many organisations including the Royal National Institute for Blind People. On a local level it provides the perfect opportunity to consider how sight loss from glaucoma, and other eye conditions, affects people living within our own community. Any degree of visual impairment can make getting out and about much more difficult, particularly for older members of society, and can lead to social isolation.
Ringwood and Fordingbridge Club for the Blind are keen to reach those locally who may be unaware of the club and what it has to offer. Meetings on the second and fourth Thursday afternoon of each month at Greyfriars Activity Centre in Ringwood provide an excellent opportunity for a social occasion and can also offer practical help and advice. ou may think these are all places invented by the late Sir Terry Pratchett, but in fact the names mentioned here belong to real villages in Devon, Essex, Norfolk, Somerset and Yorkshire. The UK’s roads are littered with signposts pointing out destinations that sound funny, rude or – let’s face it – utterly weird. But if you’ve ever wondered why the original residents chose to burden their home town or village with such a name, the answer is, they probably didn’t. Since the name first appeared hundreds or even thousands of years ago, it will have undergone a gradual transformation, being mispronounced or added to by each new group of settlers. Location, Location, Location Our place names originally combined different pieces of information, including the geographical characteristics of the land, residents’ names
or occupations and the religion they followed. The Anglo Saxons were practical in their approach to naming, describing geographical features or the size or type of settlement a traveller could expect to find. The Dorset village of Scratchy Bottom (voted second in a 2012 poll to discover Britain’s worst place name) refers to a hollow place in the landscape where the soil is rough, while the modern city name Birmingham is made up of three different elements: the given name Beorma, the word ‘inga’ (meaning family or tribe) and ‘ham’, meaning homestead. The Normans, who invaded in 1066, were known to rename places to suit their own tastes. For example a village in Essex known as Fulepet (‘foul pit’ in Anglo Saxon) was renamed as Beaumont (‘fair hill’), while Beaulieu (‘fine place’) in Hampshire was given its name by a Norman French landowner who loved the local landscape. Gods and saints Our town and village names also reflect the country’s religious history, acknowledging the worship of pagan gods and goddesses as well as Christian saints. The war god Woden is reflected in the name Wednesfield (West Midlands) and Wodnesfeld
(Essex), while Thursley in Sussex was originally a sacred spot for the worship of the god Thunor (the name means ‘Thunor’s Grove’). Throughout the UK you’ll also find ancient villages linked to church names. This often occurs when a settlement becomes large enough to warrant the development of a second church. The village is then divided by its church name, for example, Chalfont St Giles and Chalfont St Peter. If you live in an oddly-named place you’ll probably have learned to put up with outsiders poking fun, but for some the teasing can get a little too much. In 2012 the town of Staines – much derided by Sacha BaronCohen’s comic invention Ali G – voted to change its name to ‘Staines-upon-Thames’ in an effort to improve its image. So why don’t residents of our more oddly titled towns and villages do the same? We can only conclude that they love their quirky designations and don’t want to alter them. After all, these colourful names provide an insight into the earliest origins of our cities, towns and villages and it would be a sad day for all of us if they disappeared. he Great British Spring Clean campaign, which is taking place on 2-4th March, has a simple aim: to bring people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and beaches. The campaign is organised by Keep Britain Tidy, an independent charity working towards eliminating litter, ending waste by creating sustainable practices, and improving our beaches, parks and streets. PLACES TO BE PROUD OF The goal of the Great British Spring Clean is to inspire 500,000 people to get outdoors, get active and help clear up the rubbish around them, so that they can ‘live and work in places that they can be proud of and prosper in.’ The campaign works with individuals, businesses, organisations and public bodies, and has some bigname supporters including Coca-Cola Great Britain, Lidl, McDonalds, Wrigley, Costa, Iceland, KFC, Greggs, Stagecoach, the RSPCA, the RSPB and the Marine Conservation Society. GET INVOLVED ‘Join our growing army of #LitterHeroes who have had enough of other people’s
The Great British Spring Clean litter and are willing to do something about it,’ urges the campaign’s statement. ‘Together we can make a difference and clean up the environment on our doorstep.’ You can do some litter-picking by yourself or with friends and family, although make sure you stay safe, particularly if you’re litter-picking near roads. If you prefer to join an organised event or group, the campaign page has a handy map of what’s on – and you can also enter your postcode to discover events taking place near you. Visit www.keepbritaintidy.org/ get-involved/support-ourcampaigns/great-britishspring-clean. At Killingbeck in Leeds, for instance, the plan is to clean up the local nature reserve, making ‘the green space on their doorstep’ a nicer, safer place for both people and wildlife. There are also plans to do a litter pick-up in the areas covered by Leeds Health Walks. Meanwhile, Belper claims to be planning its biggest litter-pick ever on the 3rd March, with several sites targeted for clean ups. There are lots of events on the map already – just click on a virtual map pin to see a snippet appear, then click the snippet heading to find out exactly where and when the event is taking place.
FEELING ADVENTUROUS? The more adventurous of you may like to combine litterpicking with sightseeing, exercise or both. Wayne Dixon, whose adventures can be tracked by following @WayneKoda on Twitter, is walking and litter-picking his way around the 7,500 miles of Britain’s coastline accompanied by his dog, Koda. He is raising money for Mind and North Inuit Dogs while also supporting Keep Britain Tidy and their Great British Spring Clean campaign. It’s a cause dear to his heart and Koda’s, as Koda nearly lost a leg when he was injured by a discarded can. You may not have a few years to spare to follow in Wayne’s footsteps, but a shorter coastal excursion could be fun. If you like to be on the water rather than walking beside it, you could join the Plastic Patrol, as featured on The Russell Howard Hour. The group paddleboard the waterways of Britain removing discarded plastic. ‘We’ll supply the litter pickers, refuse sacks and we’ll even dispose of everything you find – just come along, do your bit and have fun.’ Visit www.plasticpatrol.co.uk and click on ‘clean-up events’ to find one near you.

Four Strange Cat Behaviours Explained Cats are amusing and fun to be around, but sometimes their behaviour just seems downright bizarre. If you’ve ever wondered why your cat behaves in a certain way, from kneading its paws to eating plastic bags, we might be able to offer a little insight. Head butts - When your cat bumps its head against you, it means they’re trying to bond and is an expression of affection. They’re also demonstrating trust in you and marking you out as a ‘member of their club’. Staring - Staring is a common trait in cats, if a little unnerving when you’re on the receiving end. They generally stare at their prey before pouncing, but in your case it could be a determined request for food or entertainment. You should also rule out any potential medical reasons if their pupils are constantly dilated - it could be

How To Get A Good Night’s Sleep By Alison Runham

A
poor night’s sleep might seem like just an inconvenience. But research has shown that insufficient or poor-quality sleep can contribute to serious health problems, including: • Weight gain and obesity. • Weakened immunity. • Increased risk of diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, heart attack and stroke. • Reduced fertility and libido. • Reduced memory, concentration and reaction times. • Increased risk of depression, anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations and psychotic episodes. This means it’s vital that we all get enough good quality sleep, which usually means at least seven hours. However, it’s not always easy. THE ENEMIES OF SLEEP • Burning the candle at both ends, trying to fit in relaxation and domestic duties. • Sleep disorders: night terrors, sleep walking, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, teeth grinding, restless limb syndrome and sleep apnoea. • Needing the toilet. • Pain e.g. from arthritis. • An uncomfortable mattress or pillow. • Menstruation (pain, heavy bleeding and hormonal changes that affect temperature and production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin). • Snoring. • Blue light. • Smoking and alcohol.
• GORD (Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease) or LPR (laryngopharyngeal or ‘silent’ reflux, in which stomach acid can damage airways, causing asthma-like symptoms) TEN TIPS TO HELP YOU SLEEP: 1. Stop snoring. Maintaining a healthy weight can help. Try sleeping on your side, nasal strips, sprays or mandibular adjustment devices. If these don’t work, consult your doctor, as you may be receiving a reduced oxygen supply at night. 2. Don’t go to bed hungry - but don’t eat late. Don’t eat less than two hours before bedtime. If you’re hungry in the evenings, choose something light and easily digestible. Milk can make you feel full and its tryptophan can help sleep, but it’s absorbed poorly (a carbohydrate-rich snack at the same time may help). 3. Stop smoking and eliminate evening alcohol and caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant and both nicotine and alcohol affect our sleep length and quality. All three can contribute to GORD and LPR. 4. Look after your body and its clock. Our bodies need exercise and daylight during the day and a more relaxed, dim environment in the evening to trigger our body clock regulation hormones. 5. Avoid blue light two hours before bedtime. Blue light, produced by modern TVs,
tablets, computers and mobiles, interferes with melatonin production. While blue light filters help, most just reduce, rather than eliminate, blue light. 6. Declutter your brain. Try writing down your worries and to-do lists before bedtime. It can be therapeutic in itself, and relieves the stress of trying to remember everything. 7. Have a night-time routine. Choose relaxing activities like reading in the hour or two before bedtime. Try having a warm (not hot) bath with relaxing aromatherapy oils. 8. Make your bedroom a haven. Avoid using your bedroom as a work space or dumping ground for clutter. Keep your bedroom well ventilated, not too hot or cold, and softly lit. Try blackout blinds - and earplugs if you have noisy housemates or neighbours. Invest in a comfortable, supportive mattress and pillows. 9. Don’t lie there worrying about not sleeping. Instead, get up and do something relaxing, such as reading a magazine or doing a jigsaw, until you feel sleepy. 10. Finally, see your doctor if you have problems with hormonal changes, night time urination, mental health, GORD, LPR or pain – or if these tips don’t work. Your GP can investigate possible causes and recommend helpful treatments and lifestyle changes.

Boundaries and Armour
M
ost of us who have been through a relationship breakdown of any sort tend to want to protect ourselves from ever feeling the pain of rejection/abandonment again. In order to protect ourselves we do many different things which we think will make ourselves safe. We may create emotional or physical distance between our loved ones, not being our true selves with a person, doing and being everything for someone, create drama or arguments, be overly self reliant, to choosing people who are emotionally distant and unable to commit to a close and loving relationship. We are in fact wearing our suit of armour. What is the difference between boundaries and armour? Boundaries are on the inside, armour is on the outside. Boundaries are the rules you make yourself, to make you an strong individual, armour is what you cover yourself in to protect yourself. Boundaries are solid, something to rely on and expect to support you. Armour can be anything you like it to be, it can be a suit of medieval armour like a knight would wear, a cloak to wrap yourself up in and hide away, a glass box, a roaring monster, a ring of fire, a cardboard box, whatever is appropriate to you. We believe that the armour of our choosing will do its job of keeping us safe, when in reality it actually means that we do not get what we really want, which is to be heard, accepted and ultimately, loved. In order to love and be loved we need to choose to use our boundaries to keep us strong and safe so that we can lose the armour and be real and transparent in a relationship. Taking off the armour is easier when you have firm boundaries in place and know why you

Verwood Keyboard Soc. becomes “Verwood in Tune”

ollowing a secret ballot of members, the Verwood Keyboard Society will now come under the auspices of the Verwood Hub who are calling the new venture “Verwood in Tune”.
The Society itself will continue to pay for the entertainers for the next two years and give general support to the Hub staff, but in time The Hub will develop their own style of event. All concerts in 2018 take place at 7.30pm on

e have almost seen off the worst of the winter and are daring to let our thoughts drift towards spring. Some days will be crisp, cold and sunny whilst others will be wet and grey and some may even have a hint of warmth to the early spring sunshine. Now is a time of transition at Blashford Lakes Nature reserve. All winter the staff and volunteers have been working hard coppicing willow, cutting and clearing brambles, making dead hedges and generally getting the reserve ready for spring. Once March arrives the larger jobs will have to stop so that we don’t disturb the birds and other wildlife that will soon be setting up home and rearing young. With warmer weather and ever increasing daylight just around the corner now is the last chance to see some of our winter visitors and the first chance to see some new arrivals. sneaking around the reed beds all winter will surely be moving on soon, so if you haven’t caught a glimpse of this elusive bird yet, you may have one last chance before next winter. Another exciting sight at this time of year are migrating birds that briefly pass through the reserve on their way elsewhere. Look out for the impressive Osprey that sometimes stop in for a quick feed and then carry on their way. The sand martins will also be returning soon and showing off their spectacular flying skills. Last spring and summer they created quite a spectacle zooming about in front of Goosander hide. Birdsong will be filling the air but if you look closer to the ground there will be further signs of spring. The snowdrops and wild daffodils are now pushing their way up through the woodland floor adding a splash of colour. You will also see the first butterflies flitting here and there enjoying the warmer weather;
Adder look out for brimstone and peacock butterflies. You may also be lucky enough to spot an adder or grass snake tentatively venturing out and testing the warmth of the sun. All in all there is plenty to see and enjoy throughout February and March. To explore the reserve’s birdlife with a guide, why not join Education Officer Jim Day for a family bird walk on Saturday 17th March. Booking is essential, please telephone 01425 472760. Madagascar ‘The Eighth Continent’ By Solange Hando
M

adagascar is the world’s oldest island: it first split from Africa and then from India around 70 million years ago. In the Indian Ocean, between the Mozambique mainland to the west and Reunion and Mauritius to the east, it is the fourth largest island on earth, almost 1,000 miles long, 360 across, best known for the unique flora and fauna which evolved in isolation for a surprisingly long time. According to experts, the first settlers arrived from Borneo in 500 AD and since then, 90% of the original forest has been lost, and deforestation is still ongoing. Most affected are the more densely populated central highlands, laced with paddies and barren hills, but Madagascar still claims over 40 special reserves and national parks – several of them listed as UNESCO World Heritage – with a rich diversity of habitats. Ecosystems range from dry spiny forest in the south, dotted with baobabs and octopus trees, to mangroves and lakes, deciduous trees and dramatic pinnacles in the west and tropical rainforest in the east, where some of the most popular national parks can be accessed from Antananarivo.
Ranomafana is a good 10 hour drive south of the capital, the route winding past colourful villages and hills with spectacular views. But one can overnight in Antsirabe, a pretty place bustling with rickshaws and craft shops, then continue the next day. Driving down at dusk in the final stages, it feels almost like the end of the world as the seemingly impenetrable cloud forest rises all around above the Namorona river and waterfall. Morning is the best time to explore the park, when animals are more active. This is where golden bamboo lemurs were first discovered in 1986 and, along the steep trails, nature lovers may be rewarded with wonderful sights as they and other lemurs leap through the trees, playing with their young or swinging from branches. Guides imitate the call to locate them and also point out spiders, frogs, red giraffenecked beetles and tropical birds such as pastel-hued cuckoo rollers or magpie robins. Mossy memorial stones recall ‘ancient people of the forest’ among tall tree and bird’s nest ferns, traveller’s palms, orchids and lobelia. Chameleons can also be spotted, perfectly camouflaged day or night.
East of the capital, the Andasibe-Mantadia national park is an easier option, just a four hour drive with a choice of walking circuits and gentle paths. Palm and dragon trees mingle with eucalyptus, blue tea plants, bird’s nectar, berries and much more. There are birds and butterflies, reptiles, geckos and several species of lemurs, including indris, the largest of them all, whose melancholy ‘singing’ can be heard at dawn. On the nearby river islands, now a sanctuary for rescued lemurs, black and white ruffed lemurs, playful ringtails and lovely diademed sifaka, or ‘dancing lemur’, happily pose for wide-eyed visitors paddling in canoes around the reed beds. Fauna or flora, around 90% of species are found nowhere else on earth and one can barely imagine 14,000 species of plants, many with medicinal properties, 170 species of palms, thousands of orchids, hundreds of birds, fish and over 100 species of lemurs, many endangered or rare. It is the world’s top biodiversity hotspot, ‘the eighth continent’, say some ecologists, and in this impoverished but beautiful ‘red island’, one hopes the goverment will bring greater stability and progress to benefit both the people and their incredible natural world.
