Dear Readers,
t’s approaching the end of May and mid-summer’s day is only a few weeks away as I write. The temperature has yet to escape the midteens and it’s yet another cool damp, drizzly day! We have only managed two BBQ’s this year and I’m sure we had one in March last year! Let’s hope ‘flaming June’ is just that! Of course my husband in his usually perverse way is pleased, since it seems to be keeping the pollen count down so far this season - we shall see! It certainly hasn’t been proper tennis weather either although I notice that Wimbledon has now moved back a week this year and is now at the beginning of July. That must surely be yet another cold and damp week! One bonus of course is that the garden and particularly the lawn is looking so vibrant and
with best wishes,
lush at present - especially after my husband scarified it to death earlier this year! We are prone to moss and the lawn treatment specialists really do work absolute wonders with weed and particularly moss treatments. Have a look through our mag for experts on all aspects of garden maintenance. Now & Then in this issue features the 1st part of a 2 part feature on the Town Hall/ Old Cinema in the Market Place and Mike Wattam has been muttering yet again! Plus we have all the usual articles - Viewed From My Window, Mikes Motors, Blashford Bulletin, etc. Don’t forget to look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 50 for all your local trades and save yourself time, fuel and most importantly - money!

ROUNDABOUT RINGWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE & SURROUNDING VILLAGES
NOW and THEN
Town Hall/Old Cinema, Market Place. (Part 1)
T
his issue’s building is Ringwood’s most controversial. Now usually referred to as the Old Cinema, it was originally built in 1868 at the expense of Mr John Morant, the Lord of the Manor of Ringwood, as his new Town Hall. It replaced the old Georgian Market Hall that had stood in the middle of the Market Place which was taken down and partially re-erected on the site now occupied by Allum & Sidaway. The new Town Hall was designed by T.H.Wyatt and built by Messrs Bull & Son of Southampton in a French classical style unlike anything else in Ringwood. This was at a time when many old town halls in England were being replaced by new grander Victorian ones. The building was made of red brick with Bath stone dressings and featured a balcony and the Morant coat of arms over the entrance. It housed a large Corn Exchange for use on Wednesday market days, a magistrates’ room and other offices, including a library and reading-room.
1850 This photo is the earliest known photograph of Ringwood and shows Frampton’s original shop in 1850 which later became the site of the Town Hall in 1868. (From Ted Baker Collection)
The new Town Hall was opened on July 1st 1868 amid great celebrations by Mr Morant who arrived from his home in Brockenhurst by train. Triumphant floral arches were erected along his route from Ringwood station to the Market Place with a triple arch at Friday’s Cross displaying the words ‘Welcome to the Lord of the Manor’ on one side and ‘Plenty Peace & Happiness’ on the other. This was the time when
Ringwood Market was in its heyday, with many agricultural advances promising a rosy future. Unfortunately this prosperity was soon followed by an arable slump in the last quarter of the 19th century, due to imported corn from USA and Canada, so the Corn Exchange as such was never a great success. Nevertheless it was wellused for balls, plays, concerts and indoor games until 1916 when the Morant family were forced to sell off almost all their estate 1910
in Ringwood, including the Town Hall. The building was then turned into the town’s first cinema, the Picture House. This of course was in the days of the silent films of Charlie Chaplin and other favourites. The first lessee was Charles Valentine Jones, shortly followed by Barrington Lynham of Broadshard Lane. Mr Lynham had been an Edwardian jockey who had won the Derby on a horse named Pole Star. In 1931 he wired the cinema for sound and changed its name to Victoria, but externally the cinema still retained its former Town Hall appearance. (Part 2 in Aug/Sept issue) May 2015

The Big Top Roll up, roll up! June’s a time for carnivals, fetes and of course, the circus is coming to town. Whether these travelling entertainers bring joy or terror to the towns they visit, it’s all ‘fair’ game as far as we’re concerned, and it’s made for some great novels. Water for Elephants Sara Gruen
Newlyorphaned scholar Jacob Jankowski decides to kiss his old life goodbye and skip town, hopping on a passing freight train. It turns out to be the travelling Benzini Brothers and their Flying Squadron, billed as ‘the most spectacular show on earth’. Bedazzled by the glitz and glamour of the big top and the circus performers, Jacob falls head over heels in love with someone he definitely shouldn’t and he soon finds out that carrying on the affair could be the most risky of death-defying acts.
Something Wicked This Way Comes - Ray Bradbury
Thirteen year olds James Nightshade and William Halloway find they have the unenviable task of saving the souls of everyone in their Midwestern town after a ‘dark carnival’ arrives. Can the best friends overcome the mysterious and evil ‘Mr Dark’ who is casting a spell over the local community, tempting them with their deepest, darkest secret desires? It’s a gripping novel that combines fantasy and horror. Should we fear what lurks in the shadows, or embrace it?
The Carnivorous Carnival - Lemony Snicket
One for the Young Adult agegroup now and if you haven’t read any of Lemony Snicket’s offerings then you really must. The Carnivorous Circus is the ninth novella in the series and follows the continuing exploits of the orphaned Baudelaire children who are trying to escape from the clutches of the evil Count Olaf. In this instalment, the intrepid and inventive children must disguise themselves as circus freaks to hide in amongst the acts of the Caligari Carnival. Prepare for much craziness and mayhem…and baby Sunny in a beard.
Full Tilt Neal Shusteman
If you thought carnivals were all merry-go-rounds and candy floss, think again. Sixteen year old Blake’s got himself in a right pickle: he’s chased his thrill-seeking brother Quinn into a carnival that’s free to get into, but could cost you your life to get out of. Blake finds he’s locked in a terrifying game where he must survive seven deadly sins before dawn. Blake must face his own inner demons and deep-seated fears
to save his and his brother’s souls. It’s a terrible notion but a tantalising read.
A Son of the Circus John Irving
Not what you’d call ‘classic Irving’ but brilliant none the less, this tale of serial killings, twins separated at birth, class differences and even a dwarf chauffeur will have you wondering who on earth ‘dunnit’ in the bustling Indian city of Mumbai. It has a pretty intricate plot-line and a fantastic cast of colourful characters designed to cause confusion and intrigue in the mind of the reader. The Great Blue Nile circus features heavily but the story twists and turns like some great, rolling river and you’ll get totally washed away by it.
Carnival - Rawi Hage
‘Fly’ is a taxi-driver who was born in a circus and grew up surrounded by clowns, acrobats and all manner of performing folk who inhabit such worlds. As he drives his cab across the city he spends his life picking up and dropping off all of life’s curious creatures. From drug dealers to prostitutes, he comes across all manner of debauched and depraved characters, causing Fly to muse that ‘the world is a carnival’. How wonderful, freaky and colourful it is.

Crocodile spotted at Moors Valley Country Park!
Y
oung thrill seekers will love the new play structure at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood. Designed by award-winning landscape architects Davies White to encourage a wide range of active play it will also capture the imagination of children of all ages. Crocodile Crossing II is a timely addition to the Park’s play trail which now includes twelve unique sculptures and the UK’s first tree top trail. Alongside balance beams, stepping logs and an Indiana Jones style rickety bridge, it features a huge crocodile’s head with a canoe and paddle in its jaws! “Crocodile Crossing II brings a new dimension to the play trail,” said Andrew Norris, Recreation Manager, Dorset. “The original Crocodile Crossing was much loved and we wanted to capture its spirit – but make it even better, bringing a new level of imaginative play to the Park.” Made of slow-grown larch from local woodland and locally sourced oak, the giant crocodile’s head appears to emerge from a vast woodchip swamp, watching for movement on the forest floor with its huge beady eyes. With three ways to approach, or escape the magnificent jaws, it has been designed to en-
courage children of all ages, skills and abilities to play together. For junior swashbucklers, Crocodile Crossing II could not have opened its jaws at a better time. A new film, based on the timeless tale of J M Barrie’s Peter Pan will hit the big screen this summer. “Whilst our crocodile won’t tick or bite, it will provide endless opportunities for imaginative active play,” said Andrew. “We are looking forward to welcoming pirates young and old to enjoy all the adventures on offer at Moors Valley Country Park this summer”. Other play structures on the play trail include ‘the nest’, a six metre high grouping of giant wooden nests linked by tunnels, a ‘snake pit’ where kids can slide inside giant snakes, and even a Russian inspired musical tree house. There is also the option to divert on to the Tree Top Trail half way around the Play Trail. This is a five metre high and 200 metre long wooden walkway that takes you up amongst the trees for a great bird’s eye view. The play trail takes about an hour to complete. Moors Valley opens every day except Christmas Day. Admission is free, parking charges apply. For more information contact the Rangers on 01425 470721 or visit: www.moors-valley.co.uk.
Ferndown Poppy Walk a runaway success!
T
he second Ferndown Poppy Walk organised by the Ferndown Branch of the Royal British Legion raised a fantastic total of over £1000 for the 2015 Poppy Appeal. Branch Chairman, Grant Parrott said ‘I would like to thank everyone who took part and helped on the day, and the hundreds who gave sponsorship or donations to make the day such a success. Every penny raised will go towards the RBL’s rehabilitation and trauma recovery centres, care-homes and carer support, advice and counselling services and home and hospital visits for both serving personnel and ex-services veterans and their families wherever it is needed on both a local and national level.’ The nationwide Poppy appeal this year is on target to reach £40 million.

T he Blashford Bulletin Things to look out for in the coming months at the Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve, Ibsley. Lapwing chick
Elephant Hawk Moth Grass snake
by Bob Chapman
by Jim Day
J
une is a beautiful month and a busy time at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve. With the leaves on the trees still fresh and the longer days and increasing sunshine, everything appears to be happening at once. Many birds on the reserve now have young, including terns, little grebes, great crested grebes (with their stripy humbug like chicks) and lapwing. Slowly becoming more confident, the chicks will be thinking about taking their next step, or leap, away from the comfort of their nest or parent bird, and they will be fledging here, there and everywhere. Despite all this breeding and fledging activity, the air is still filled with birdsong with many continuing to sing throughout June as their mates produce a second brood. Hundreds of greylag and Canada geese will be descending on to Ibsley Water in order to moult, favouring the sanctuary this large expanse of water provides as a roosting site. Whilst renewing their
feathers post breeding, their ability to fly well or easily is somewhat hindered and they are therefore at greater risk from predators such as fox. Large numbers of mute swans will follow soon after, gathering on either Rockford or Ivy Lake. More and more insects are on the wing, including dragonflies and butterflies. Best viewed on a sunny day, the meadow is a fabulous place to sit, listen and be still. As the insect world happily continues around you, grasshoppers chirp and venture further up a stem, butterflies flutter past and dragonflies hawk overhead in search of their next meal. If you would like to find out more about this dazzling miniature world why not book onto one of our Catch the Bug events on Saturday 27th June or Friday 24th July. On the ground, grass snakes abound and are likely to have taken up their favourite spot for basking on the alder logs and stumps outside Ivy South Hide. The habitat here is perfect for them as they feed primarily on fish and amphibians.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust Protecting wildlife. Inspiring people.
The light trap should be producing a fine catch of moths, including large emerald, garden tiger, cinnabar, poplar hawk-moth and the delightfully pink elephant hawk-moth. Masters of camouflage, these insects are often overlooked, possibly as they do prefer the night to the day! If you would like to take a closer look at these fascinating creatures then why not join Education Officer Jim Day on a Summer Wildlife Walk on Saturday 13th June or Reserves Officer Ed Bennett on one of our two Marvellous Moths events on Fridays 3rd and 17th July. Please telephone to book your place. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Sembcorp Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

t never ceases to amaze me how wandering cats find their way to our door. Another new arrival started to come for food, we could only glimpse him at first and he ran away if he saw even a shadow of us looking at him, but after a few weeks he seemed to gain confidence and to know that we were not there to harm him, but indeed provided the food he so badly needed.
see who was visiting us at night and eating all the food, and sure enough he was one of those who visited during the night as well, so he obviously did not go far and enjoyed or perhaps depended on all the food that was available here. Sadly, one day we saw his poor body by the road and although we could not pick him up at that moment, we were determined we would if he was still there on our return an hour later, but someone had collected him. I hope it was his family who claimed him and at least they would know his fate.
I felt sure there must be a proud owner somewhere, he is a large cat, so not young, but so beautiful, someone must love him dearly. Surely he could not just be a stray, or an abandoned cat? His visits were What is it with every meal time, cats and the so an opportunist Boy George road? competition it is a fantastic bargain. Roomy for a family of four with luggage or for large loads yet with a relatively small footprint, it is an extremely economical yet accelerative and confident long distance cruiser, which dependant upon specification is highly capable on poor terrain. Supremely comfortable, a delight to drive and in which to be entertained – whether DAB radio, internet, phone or other i-device. My car was specified with the excellent quiet and powerful 1.6 litre ‘Euro-6’ ultra-clean diesel with manual 6-speed gearbox, pearlescent white paint and black leather. In ‘Feline’ trim the sports seats are very supportive and comfortable, while the high ‘crossover’ driving position is commanding, with all controls falling logically to hand. It is one of those cars in which you instantly feel ‘at-one’ and demonstrates that this car is carefully thought out and means business. It recorded an average of 57mpg driven hard over 14,000 miles in 6 days – much of it up to 90mph on Autobahnen - finishing fatigue-free. Driven with economy in mind it will comfortably beat 60mpg. Although only a 2-wheel front driver, upper versions of the 2008 have Peugeot’s brilliant ‘Grip Control’ traction control system as standard, which together with better than average
2008 in the Snowdome
ground-clearance provides the tools to scramble out of many a slippery situation. A 5-position dial enables it to be fine-tuned to the surface being driven, yet I left it to it’s own devices and it just got on with competently outsmarting my attempts to ‘ground’ it. At the heart of this skill is a subtle blend of a very old trick (balancing braking while under power to tame spinning wheels) and the very latest electronic technology. This very accurately measures the situation at all four corners and implements a combination of individual wheel braking and optimised power to the wheels with grip to ease the car out of trouble. I could bore you with my test on a frozen cobbled 1-in-4 hill in Monschau, but I suggest you merely look at http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=jTVPxHX1jZo&feature=youtu= be to see the capabilities. In summary, a great pleasure to drive, superbly comfortable economical and manoeuvrable, also very well specified all round. Minuses? They could have spent a bit more time in the styling studio, and specifying a silly electric handbrake on a vehicle of this capability is ludicrous. Finally as Jeremy Clarkson wouldn’t be seen dead in any Peugeot, this provides the most powerful incentive to get out this very minute and buy one!

S
pecifying what you need from your next car isn’t easy. Is 4 wheel drive necessary, what about ground clearance, people and luggage capacity, is longdistance capacity or in-town manoeuvrability the priority? Is a powerful or frugal car more important, and is an entertaining drive desireable? Should hybrid or even pure electric power be chosen, rather than a conventionally fuelled car? Is in-car entertainment and plugability of the inevitable i-devices essential? These are typical questions continually mulled over as the change point approaches. Example; a friend would carry a 2-metre length of 2x1 around with him to dealers, instantly rejecting every vehicle into which it wouldn’t comfortably fit – an extreme case of wood for trees. He had considered neither the real-life frequency of such a need, nor the merits of compliant friends or even van hire. So how to find a car that ticks all the boxes? Virtually impossible, but to tick many more boxes than average? Enter the Peugeot 2008 crossover. In up-market specifications this meets most user needs very well. What it isn’t, is a blingbedazzled expensive brand with stand-out good looks, but then priced at almost half that of similarly specified ‘prestige’

Lions let loose at Paultons Park
n Sunday 26 April 2015 Paultons Park opened its doors to 37 Lions Clubs from all over the District including Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club so that nearly 2000 young people could enjoy a wonderful day out at the spectacular theme park in Hampshire. Lions clubs from far and near were encouraged to join in the fun by inviting deserving guests from their own local areas to all descend on Paultons Park for the day. Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club invited a group of 19 from the Stable Family Home Trust at Bisterne near Ringwood and a local family to be their guests for the day at Paultons Park. Lion President Geoff Kay pictured above with one of the groups from SFHT commented “that it was a great day out for lots of young

people in our local communities designed to specifically accommodate those with disabilities who most deserve a day of fun!” The Stable Family Home Trust (SFHT) is a Registered Charity that supports people with a learning disability to lead ordinary lives with some extraordinary moments. SFHT offers a range of services to people with a learning disability and their families: supported lives in residential homes, day services, domiciliary support, and support to find employment. Any family, group, or organisation interested in attending the next Lions Day at Paultons Park in 2016 should contact their local Lions Club for further information. Contact details for Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions can be found on their website at www.randflions.org.uk.
Fordingbridge Twinning Association
he Fordingbridge Twinning Association had its AGM recently, with an unexpectedly high turnout of members. Fortunately sufficient cheese, bread, wine and juices were available. It was a great pleasure to have the Town Mayor, Malcolm Connolly and his good lady Marie with us too. It was a very full agenda, commencing with a welcoming introduction from Alison Ayling the chairman, followed by a very entertaining, thoughtful and philosophical talk by Dennis Bailey, the President (see photo) who explained how Fordingbridge benefits from having an active Twinning Society, and how individual members benefit too, items like cultural exchanges, increased understanding of varying international points of view, and the general contact with people
of a like mind, not only from France, but from Belgium and Germany too. Forthcoming events include a Boules evening to take place at Sandy Balls, Godshill, on 11th June, the Fordingbridge Show, on Saturday 18th July, a weekend in Vermoutiers at their “Foire de la Pomme” (Apple Festival) over the weekend of 17th-18th October (that should be fun), a repeat of last year’s very successful jazz evening “Jazz on an Autumn Evening” at the Town Hall on 24th October (put it in your diary now) and we’re also planning our annual Murder Mystery evening for Saturday evening 6th February next year. For further details on how to join us for these events, and indeed to become a member and join in the fun, do contact Alison or Derek Ayling on 01425 650770 or email on: Hippotrain@btinternet.com

Put A Spring In Your Step By Alison Runham
M
any of us spend a lot of time on our feet (and if we don’t, we probably should). But often they’re mistreated or neglected, potentially causing problems not just with our feet but our ankles, knees, hips and back too. So with the weather improving and country walks beckoning, how can you keep the spring in your step? Practise Good Foot Hygiene Wash and dry your feet thoroughly every day, taking particular care to dry between the toes. Feet can quickly become irritated and sore when they’re sweaty or dirty, and fungal infections such as Athlete’s Foot thrive in the warm, moist areas between the toes. Beware Foot Bugs Athlete’s Foot and Verrucas (or more properly, Verrucae) can be contracted from public areas where people go barefoot, such as swimming pools, although many provide pool shoes or antiseptic foot baths. Treat these
www.alison.runham.co.uk conditions swiftly before they spread, either by using over-the counter treatments or by seeking advice from your doctor, podiatrist or chiropodist. Find The Right Footwear Friction from Ill-fitting shoes can cause calluses (hard patches of skin) or blisters, while constant pressure on a certain area can cause corns – protruding, often painful areas of hard skin with a rigid core. Blister plasters and corn treatments are available over the counter, but you may need chiropody treatment to eradicate corns for good. Ill-fitting, pointed or high-heeled shoes can also cause a bunion – a protruding big toe joint on the side of the foot caused when the first metatarsal bone and toe bone become displaced. We all know high heels are bad for our feet (and our knees, hips and back). If you really can’t resist: • Avoid wearing them all the time (could you wear something lower while you’re travelling to your meeting or party?) • Vary the height of the heels you wear • Buy the lowest heels you can live with. Completely flat shoes can be problematic too, sometimes causing Achilles tendonitis. Always ensure the back of your leg doesn’t feel strained when
buying flat shoes – the heel should always be higher than the pad. Flip-flops don’t provide proper support or protection and aren’t suitable for everyday wear, so ignore fashion and save them for the beach. Shopping for shoes Our feet usually swell a little throughout the day, so shoeshop in the afternoon to avoid buying shoes that are too tight – and don’t shoe-shop with sore feet. Consider the purpose of the shoes you’re buying, and what you’ll wear with them too. If you’re searching for walking boots, take thick socks along on your shopping trip, but if you’re buying heels that you’ll be wearing with tights, ensure that’s what you’re wearing when you try them on. Protect your feet when exercising. Wear trainers designed for exercise – don’t be tempted by cheap fashion trainers that don’t provide support or let your feet breathe, as these can cause pain in your back, hips, knees and ankles. Unsupportive footwear and jogging on hard surfaces can cause heel spurs (small bony overgrowth on the heel bone) and plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the band of tissue under the sole. A proper warm up before exercise will help prevent damage to your muscles, tendons and joints. Foot problems such as corns, bunions and plantar fasciitis can be the result of biomechanical or orthopaedic problems, so always consult a podiatrist or doctor if problems persist.

Budapest
‘Queen of the Danube’ By Solange Hando
S
et in the Carpathian basin, Hungary’s capital is said to rank among the most beautiful cities in Europe. Here, the legendary Danube flows through the heart of town, meandering romantically around green islands and under iconic bridges. On the west bank, the wooded hills of Buda climb to 527 metres while to the east, the plain of Pest rises gently into the distance.
On the Buda side, the Royal Palace rises on Castle Hill, one of the prettiest districts around with cobbled squares and traditional buildings. There are imposing statues and wrought iron gates, stylish colonnades and archways, a lofty church with neo-Gothic ornaments and the must-see Fisherman’s Bastion, named after the Guild once responsible for its upkeep, now a top attraction for its unrivalled views over the river and city.
Stroll along the promenade or sail on the Danube and as you gaze at the elegant façades, the domes and spires glistening with mosaics, it’s easy to see why the river banks form an integral part of the city’s World Heritage. On the eastern side, beyond the superb Chain Bridge guarded by lion statues, pride of place goes to the grandiose Parliament Building, bristling with pinnacles and turrets and topped by a splendid red dome. Stretching 268 metres along the river, with 27 gates, 691 rooms and a stunning 20kms of stairways, it was inaugurated in 1896 for the Millennium which marked 1000 years of Hungarian history. It is home to the Crown Jewels and affectionately known as the ‘Mother of the Country’.
Beyond its historical complex, Buda is a select residential area while down town, Pest is all hustle and bustle, its streets lined with gleaming shops and architectural gems, ranging from neo-Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque, Ottoman and Art Nouveau. Andrassy Avenue, the 2.5 km long commercial hub, is protected by UNESCO, alongside the Millennium Underground Railway which follows the same route, starting a few steps from St Stephen’s Basilica and stretching all the way to the city park. Among the many notable sights are the State Opera House, the nearby Franz Liszt Academy of Music and at the entrance to the park, the Museum of Fine Arts and Heroes’ Square where
the semi-circular memorial is described as ‘a history book made of stone’. With a lake which is an ice rink in winter, Botanical Gardens and medicinal baths boasting 18 pools in and outdoors, the park is a favourite haunt of city folks, just one of many venues where you can relax in this ‘land of 1000 hot springs.’ There are over 100 of them in and around town, including those on Gellert Hill prized since Roman times. The hill offers sweeping vistas over the city. But sooner or later, the Danube calls you back with waterside restaurants, panoramic cruises and bridges revealing ever changing views and architectural styles, from the contemporary Elizabeth Bridge to the iron Liberty Bridge where the last silver rivet was put in place by Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. Budapest suffered much destruction in the past, but with its beautifully restored buildings, the ‘Queen of the Danube’ truly deserves its place among Europe’s finest cities.

Hobbies
A Hobby that’s worth Droning on about! By Kate McLelland
D
rones are much in the news these days: whether it’s shooting a spectacular wildlife image or zooming too close to a passenger plane, these popular flying machines have had their share of good and bad press reports. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may be the latest gadget-of-choice but pilotless flying vehicles have a long and surprising history. In 1849 the Austrians launched a largely unsuccessful unmanned bomb attack on Venice, using balloons (planes were yet to be invented) and unmanned torpedos also played a part in the First World War. The first remote-controlled pilotless aircraft was invented in 1935 and World War II saw the use of UAVs on both sides, but when the US Air Force lost over 5,000 airmen in the Vietnam War, drones began to be used extensively. They undoubtedly saved further loss of life but these large, expensive, jet-powered craft proved hard to recover and many were lost during operations. If you are thinking of buying one for yourself or a family member, be warned, as you can incur some pretty hefty
penalties if you let your drone infringe airspace regulations. The Air Navigation Order states that no unmanned craft can be flown within 50 metres of a person, vehicle or building – unless the people, vehicles or buildings in question are “under your control”. That means even that flying a drone in your own back garden is not permitted unless your neighbour’s property is at least 50m away. If you’re in a public space, such as a park, you are not allowed to fly within 150m of any “congested area” and you must avoid filming in places such as sports fields where crowds are gathered. Even though you may be able to receive live, streamed video from the drone’s location, you should not let it stray out of your line of sight. Businesses that want to use a drone for commercial purposes must apply for a permit from the Civil Aviation Authority before they attempt a flight close to people or property. A number of recreational users have already been convicted for offences that include flying too close to the rides at Alton Towers and photographing Devonshire
landscapes without the landowner’s consent. It cost one man over £4,000 in fines and court fees when his UAV flew near a road bridge and over a nuclear installation. If you’re still keen to own a drone you can pick up a flyonly model from under £30. A more advanced device, which lets you steer from a smartphone or tablet while a camera streams live images or records video footage, will cost around £250-£300. As long as the rules and regulations are observed, you’ll get hours of enjoyment from flying these clever little gadgets, but do set aside some time to master the techniques you’ll need before you attempt that perfect bird’s eye view shot. Here are some basic rules to follow while you are learning: avoid windy conditions and operate the drone in a park or grassy field well away from people, animals and parked cars. Turn off your mobile phone and try not to let other distractions affect your concentration. With a bit of practice, you’ll soon be flying like a pro, but just remember: if your expensive UAV ends up in a tree, just don’t go droning on about it…

Beauty and the Beach by Kate Duggan
Whether you’re planning a staycation, or a round the world trip, camping or a five-star hotel stay, read on for our pick of summer beauty essentials.
greasy, leading to spots and skin irritation. However, this lotion is gentle enough to be used all over, and is packed with nourishing ingredients, such as shea and coconut oils.
way as you would a blusher, but the multi-tones help to avoid ‘Aunt Sally’ cheeks, and make for a far more natural, youthful effect. These have been designed to lock moisture into the skin, while absorbing oil to keep shine at bay. Choose from six shades, including coral (pictured).
For many of us, slapping on foundation is the last thing we fancy doing on a summer’s day. But if you still want some coverage, try a Blemish Balm (BB). Similar to a tinted moisturiser, but with added benefits, a BB cream hydrates and primes your skin, while helping to even out your complexion. Pacifica Alight Multi Mineral BB Cream is a steal at just £16.99 from www.naturisimo.com. It’s perfect for creating that freshfaced glow. Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Bricks are a bit of a cult favourite, and the new Brightening Bricks (£34) look set to become just as popular. You use them in much the same
You need to protect your skin from the sun all year around, but it’s even more vital in the warmer months. If you suffer from eczema, psoriasis or other skin complaints, you may want to opt for a natural sunscreen, that’s less likely to irritate your skin. Neal’s Yard Remedies Chamomile & Aloe Vera Moisturising
Sun Lotion gets our vote. It’s 100% natural, has an SPF of 25, and offers both UVA and UVB protection. Usually, it’s best to buy a separate facial sun cream, as most body creams are quite
Ah the joys of trying to fit all of your make-up and toiletries into your suitcase. Travel sized versions of your favourite toiletries can be much more expensive, per millilitre, than their big sisters. A cheaper option is to invest in some refillable bottles. Do make sure that at least some of them are under 100ml, if you want to keep them in your hand luggage when flying. Some sets even come complete with a see through bag, so there’s no faffing around for a plastic bag at the airport check-in. We like The Body Shop’s Travel Kit, £7, which has three bottles, two jars and a handy spatula. Miniatures are, however, a great way to try new skincare ranges without forking out for a full sized product that might not suit your skin. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a new travel washbag to house all your new goodies, we’re lusting after the Orla Kiely Large Washbag in Floating Flower, which has three separate compartments and a hook to hang it up. Treat yourself for £32 at www.Cuckooland.com.

Should it be Home or Away for Grandparents? by Kate McLelland
I
f you’ve ever watched TV programmes such as “Escape to the Country” or “A Place in the Sun: Home or Away”, you’ll appreciate the dilemma. Each week these shows focus on couples who dream of making a new start in life, either by moving to a different part of Britain or emigrating to a new country altogether. In many cases the show’s subjects are older couples. The show takes them to their dream location and follows them as they seek advice on property from a real estate professional. At the start of each programme we learn something about their lives then eavesdrop as they explore various houses. But as soon as the door closes on the final viewing, the TV presenter’s expression changes from light-hearted to deadly serious: it’s decision time. This is often a moment of mixed emotions, particularly if the couple is concerned about leaving grandchildren behind. For all their excitement and anticipation there’s often a trace of regret - even guilt behind the smiles. It’s a tough dilemma that many of today’s grandparents face: should they move, or stay? Having been through parenthood themselves, grandparents understand
how quickly children grow up. While you can always come back for important events such as sports days and the Christmas nativity play, missing out on the small, everyday things may be difficult. It’s also possible that your children depend on you to provide regular, unpaid childcare services while they work. In those circumstances your move away may have significant economic implications for the family. But is it right that grandparents, who may have struggled to bring up their own children, should now feel trapped by a sense of obligation to the next generation? Jules and Gareth Bowman from Essex were faced with that difficult question when they retired.
“We had always dreamed of living in the country but my job kept us in town,” says Gareth. “Retirement brought the chance to move but our daughter Ellie worked full time and relied on us for childcare. Although we didn’t want to let the family down, Jules suffers from ill-health and we felt we only had a few good years left.” The Bowmans finally confided their feelings to their daughter
and son-in-law.
“I don’t think they’d ever considered that we might want to live somewhere else. Ellie spoke to her boss, who let her work flexi-time, and she found a good créche for the holidays. The move has been good for us and the family enjoy coming to visit.” The Bowmans were lucky that their family could adapt to changing circumstances, but what works for one family may not work for another: other grandparents have felt there is no alternative but to continue offering support. It seems counter-intuitive, but sometimes relocation can work better for everyone involved. Without the stresses and strains of close-up living, family visits become more like holidays, celebrated with lots of outings and treats, while Skype calls via a webcam help to bridge the gaps between visits. Although it may help to discuss future plans with your children, ultimately it’s up to you to decide on the best long-term solution for your health and happiness. But however you choose to go forward, one thing is certain: real life decisions are more complex and challenging than they appear on those reality TV shows!

What happened.......
Q
uite a few middleclass breakfasts must have been ruined when the newspapers of 11th June 1965 were opened. For the news was truly shocking. The Beatles were to receive MBEs in the Birthday Honours List! It’s difficult at this distance – and almost impossible for people who weren’t around at the time – to realise what a big deal this was. And if anything it seems comical that so many retired colonels sent their medals back to the Palace in disgust. What blimps these outraged fuddy-duddies must
have been, we think today; and the apocalyptic language with which they expressed their horror – the Beatles were “vulgar numbskulls”, snarled one; Britain would fall “even deeper into international ridicule and contempt”, howled another; and the word “debased” appeared over and over again – makes them seem even more so. As for the newly-elected Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson, who had put the Fab
...50 years ago? by Ted Bruning Four up for their gongs, he was vilified as subverting the honours system and trying to curry favour with the young. But how wrong those criticisms were, for this was not an act of subversion, but of absorption. The Beatles had become hugely successful dollar earners, with nine US number one singles and four US number one albums to their credit so far, as well as the creation of an enormous American market for other British acts; and that made them part of the Establishment and entitled to all the honours that came with it. The Beatles themselves sensed this and seem to have been uneasy over it. John Lennon reportedly worried about being seen as a sell-out and had to be talked into accepting his MBE by Brian Epstein; and the Lovable Moptops famously tried to make a pantomime of their investiture that October, turning up in John’s psychedelic Rolls-Royce, wearing unconventional suits, smoking a joint in the Palace loos (later and rather unconvincingly denied), and trying (and failing) to banter with the Queen. Four years later John confirmed that he had never been happy with the whole
business when he returned his medal – without a trace of irony! – in protest at Britain’s involvement in the Vietnam and Biafran wars. So perhaps it was the shocking headlines of 11th June 1965 and the events that followed that spurred the Beatles into escaping from the curse of light entertainment – of Saturday morning children’s TV shows, of guest slots on Lulu (or, worse, a show of their own), of Royal Command Performances, of touring unto exhaustion. Once “Help!” was finished later that year they put the three-minute lovesongs (albeit the superior and beautifully crafted three-minute love-songs) of the first half of the career behind them and started exploring their talent in earnest. And then Brian Epstein died; and although his death was tragically untimely (and although he was no showbiz monster to compare with the likes of Larry Parnes or Simon Cowell) it did finally complete the process that had started at Buckingham palace of freeing the Beatles from the light entertainment treadmill that had ruined so many of their great contemporaries – notably Dusty Springfield – and left them with nothing to do but create. So perhaps, ultimately, we have Harold Wilson to thank for The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be.
HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAYS TO Damien Hirst (7th June), Elizabeth Hurley (10th June), and Garry Pallister (30th June). Cake and botox to you all!

Home & Interiors Charming Country Style
By Katherine Sorrell and a simple pelmet. As for upholstery, ensure it is well-stuffed and comfortable. Piping looks smart and traditional, but the occasional frilled edging can be delightful. Complete the effect with piles of throws, blankets and cushions of all shapes and sizes.
C
osy, comfortable and oh-so pretty, country style has eternal appeal. Think roses winding around the porch, crackling log fires, chickens in the yard and a Victoria sponge cooling on the range cooker. As interiors expert Katherine Sorrell says, who could resist? Moving to the country may be a fantasy for many of us, but even if you can’t actually make the move, you can evoke a charming country style in your home. The aim is to create a look that appears to have evolved naturally over time. Overall, choose either off-white or pastel walls, or perhaps a block-printed wallpaper, the latter featuring delicate, trailing florals or something more bold and blowsy. Tactile, natural floor coverings such as sisal, jute or coir have the right kind of honest and hard-working good looks, while rugs are warm and practical. With furniture, keep an eye on balance and proportion. You can put all kinds of styles together if you keep an eye on their size and scale. It might be a Georgian, Victorian
or early 20th century piece, antique, junk-shop, handme-down or home-made, but it should never look overtly modern and always be sturdy, simple and generously sized. Squashy sofas, big armchairs, plain wooden chairs, benches and stools, and the occasional wirework or Lloyd Loom piece are all key. Add dining chairs with ladder or spindle backs, plus a scrubbed-pine table, and complement them with a large, open dresser. Some distressed paintwork here and there enhances the overall effect. When choosing fabrics, an informal mix of gently worn patterns gives a lovely effect. Texture is as important as pattern, so opt for a combination that could include florals, tweed, ginghams, stripes, polka dots, paisley, tapestry, embroidery and textured plains such as linen, wool, velvet or mohair. For a hand-made, vintage feel, include some knitting or crochet, too. Window treatments should be understated – perhaps a Roman blind with a decorative trim, or a pair of full-length, gathered curtains
Lighting can make or break a room. Add table and floor lamps to brighten corners and illuminate work areas: wrought iron, brass, turnedwood, frilly-edged glass, plaster or ceramic bases, with understated fabric or card shades, are all great choices. A few candles dotted here and there and, of course, the appealing flicker of a real fire, will really enhance the atmosphere. As for accessories, any number of extra touches will transform your home into a special country retreat. For walls, it might be watercolour landscapes or botanical prints, needlepoint or crossstitch samplers or woodblock illustrations, Wicker baskets and wooden boxes make good-looking storage solutions, while it goes without saying that chintz, blue-andwhite or spongeware crockery is just the thing for displaying on the dresser. You could even make a display from cooking equipment such as jelly moulds or copper pans. To finish the whole look off, arrange masses of fresh flowers in informal containers – jam jars, mugs or enamel pitchers, perhaps – to give a fresh scent of the country, whatever your location. Portrait of a Local Artist Hampshire based Alix Baker PCAFAS (Armed Forces Art Society) is one of the UK’s leading military artists.
“I have family connections with Hampshire and Wiltshire going back centuries,” says Alix, whose work is the subject of study by many GCSE and A Level art students and has featured on BBC’s Woman’s Hour. “For landscape painters, Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire offer such variety and colour.” She adds: “You cannot shut out the artistic side of the brain. It is the same for musicians. At some time in your life it will become an overwhelming urge and you will be compelled to give in to it.” Alix is an expert on military uniforms through the centuries with a particular interest in the effects of campaigns on dress. She has worked on official commissions for military units and museums, for collectors worldwide and contributed maps and illustrations to history books. Designers of silver statues and model soldiers have modelled their work on figures in Alix’s paintings. Now, she also paints other subjects in oils, acrylics and watercolours. “Like many artists, I get a physical craving, particularly when it’s impossible to access time or art materials,” says Alix. “I always carry a notebook in which to record thoughts, notes on colours, light direction, random ideas etc. I’m forever looking up at the sky and the many colours to be found in clouds!” In 2002 Alix was elected chairman of The Armed Forces Art Society. In 2009 she was elected a life member. Alix usually exhibits annually with some of the Royal art societies based at The Mall Galleries in London. Last year a book was published which features one of her paintings: The Complete Guide to Painting in Acrylics by Lorena Kloosterboer. Alix’s work can be seen in the Creative Coverage Forest Connections exhibition at The New Forest Centre, Lyndhurst until July 3. www.alixbaker.com

WilloW Pattern china As imported Chinese porcelain increased in popularity, the potteries of Staffordshire were desperate to compete. At first, they emulated the style with hand-painted ware, but in the late 18th century, they finally devised a means of copying Chinese hand-painting efficiently and cheaply. The new process was called underglaze transfer printing, and was probably first used to print Chinese landscape patterns onto porcelain by a maker called Caughley. He was soon followed by Minton, and the process was perfected, in 1784, by Josiah Spode I. Spode made Willow Pattern, and other Chinese designs, the trademark of his company. It is thought that Willow Pattern was developed from a Chinese pattern called Mandarin – the romantic legend that it was based on the story of two lovers chased by a rich mandarin across a bridge and then transformed into doves probably being a publicity stunt that was developed decades later. Early Willow Pattern plates were hexagonal, printed with dark blues on a ‘pearlware’ body; as time went on the blue became paler and the plates circular. By 1830, the pattern was so popular that there were about 200 producers of it in England, including all the great names of British pottery. Willow was not always in blue – other colours, such as red, purple, black and green, have featured, sometimes gilding has been added and, especially in the 1920s and 30s, multi-coloured Willow Pattern, known as Gaudy Willow, had its share of popularity. The design did not remain static, either. In the 20th century the borders were often changed or eliminated, and the central pattern simplified. Whatever the difference in its details, and whoever it was made by, however, Willow Pattern has been eternally popular – even, perhaps, the most commonly used pattern in history. The driver is unlikely to spot any major difference in road behaviour.
About Spare Tyres
Having in the past tested competing makes of tyre in a variety of scientifically measured conditions, premium tyres generally perform well in all areas, but for instance some give better results in emergency braking, some are better in the wet, while others give the most comfortable, quiet ride. It is complicated by differences in performance within a single brand and model, when testing different tyre sizes. What is common, is that performance remains high – you tend to pay for what you get.

egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.
