Welcome W Dear Readers, hen Keats felt moved to write the first line of his famous ‘Ode to Autumn’ poem (“Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”) it must have been very similar to this year’s. The weathermen are suggesting a “fools gold” season which sound very promising! Our cover photo was taken early one November morning last year whilst out on an early morning bike ride with the low sun just appearing through the Forest mist and trees. Like many of you no doubt, we have been out foraging in the hedgerows for blackberries which are much in evidence this year and so delicious in a crumble. Ringwood Art Society Exhibition

his year our Summer Exhibition held at ‘Greyfriars’in Ringwood, was deemed a great success, with over 200 guests and members at our preview evening with 15 paintings being sold on the night, an excellent start to the exhibition. On the preview evening, the Mayor of Ringwood, Cllr. Steve Rippon-Swaine kindly opened proceedings, where invited guests and members could partake in some wine and browse 412 exhibits on display, which included pottery. As the evening progressed the Mayor awarded trophies to the artists with the most innovative and artistic skills, as judged this year by Linda Patterson, BA Hons, Dip E Hum, SBA, AFP.

NOW and THEN Gravel Lane, Ringwood

Early 20th Century

ravel Lane was once also known as The Drove or Love Lane, according to Dr Little, a well-known doctor and local historian. In past centuries it was part of the drove way for driving animals from the New Forest into Ringwood. Drovers and their animals would continue over the diagonal path across the Furlong (now the main car park), down the narrow part of Meeting House Lane into the Market Place, especially on Market Day. When the new A31 bypass was built in the 1970s, Gravel Lane was cut into two parts joined by a subway. The early 20th century photo shows the part of Gravel Lane nearest to the town, which is still recognisable today. This part remains

an attractive path retaining much of its past rural appearance. On the right of the old photograph are the grounds of the Manor House. In the early1960s neo-Georgian style houses were built here fronting onto Gravel Lane; this part is now renamed Linden Gardens. On the left of the old photograph is the fence of the gardens of the Elms, a large house which was demolished when the new roundabout and Mansfield Road were constructed in the 1970s. The remaining piece of this ground is now Dr Littleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gardens. Note that the traditional lamppost has been replaced by a modern one of far less attractive design, although it is hidden by trees during the summer months. September 2013

e caught the feral cat we now call Jasper so that he could be neutered as part of our campaign to neuter all feral cats who came to us for food and shelter. We had become increasingly concerned about his facial features as it would appear that his jaw was not quite right, it seem to tilt to one side and a canine tooth extended sideways from his mouth rather than in an upright position, his nose was scarred as well. We thought he may have been in a road accident. He was eating well although he was still very thin. The Vet confirmed that at some time he had sustained a broken jaw, as well as a broken hip and his canine tooth position was as a result of his injuries and could not be rectified by surgery without doing further damage to his jaw. We just hoped that at the time of his injury he was being looked after by someone and had not had to fend for himself. He has chosen to stay Everyone needs a friend. Jasper and his friend Mr Tom

with us and we shall care for him and provide him with all he needs. I was so pleased when Jasper found a friend in Mr Tom as they both seemed so lonely and yet too timid for us to cuddle them, and they soon became inseparable, taking walks together and sleeping cuddled up together, whether it be in a box, a plant pot or on the bench enjoying the sunshine. After his neutering, which involved extended

surgery, Jasper moved into the house with his friend Mr Tom, and has chosen not to go outside again since, and together they like to sit at the big window and look out at the birds and other wildlife, very content with their new winter quarters. Perhaps in the Spring they may decide to once again visit the outside world, but meanwhile there is no hurry, they have all they need and they can still enjoy the view. They have finally found themselves a good and comfortable home and also have other companions living with them in the house. ord has a much-delayed new Mondeo on the stocks for release in the UK during 2014. It is assumed the delay is to enable the new car to be yet again top dog in the large-barge class – on past performance we know Ford are likely to achieve it. Their job is paradoxically made all the more difficult as they have to achieve a significant advance over the current Mondeo which continues to be leader of the pack after 7 years, leaving cars such as the excellent new Peugeot 508, the Passat, Insignia and Avensis looking wanting.

Enough of the economics lesson. And the car? Walking up to it we see a familiar large shape, tarted up this year with a very aggressive pair of grilles and in estate car format and metallic black as tested it looks several classes more expensive than the ticket price suggests. A major cornerstone of Mondeo popularity is the sheer volume and luxury of the interior. Despite the small engine, huge torque back-up made it no sluggard and on those rare occasions when a rapid overtake was needed, delivered delightful ironfist-in-a-velvet-glove performance aided by very well-chosen gear ratios – superb. In summary, this car presents a highly convincing case if the kudos of “the new 2014 model” is of no real interest to you. I’d go for it!

Chilli Chicken Stew Serves 6 - 8

Ready in 1 hour 45 minutes

With Halloween at the end of the month, why not plan a ghostly gathering and serve up this hot and spicy chicken stew? Perfect for filling up hungry trick or treaters. Ingredients: • 1-2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 large onion, peeled and cut into chunks • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 small red chilli pepper, deseeded and finely chopped (optional) • 6 large skinless chicken fillets, cut into pieces • 2 x 400g can chopped tomatoes • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 2 tsp dried oregano • 1 x 400g can kidney beans in chilli sauce • 1 red, 1 green and 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and diced • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Warm crusty bread, to serve

Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a large, deep flameproof casserole and fry the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened and golden. Add the chilli pepper (if using) and chicken pieces and cook over a medium heat, stirring all the time, until the chicken pieces are lightly browned all over, adding a little extra oil if needed. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato puree, oregano and 200ml water and bring to the boil. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper then reduce the heat, partially cover and simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the kidney beans and diced peppers to the casserole and simmer, uncovered, for a further 20-25 mins until the peppers are tender and some of the liquid has reduced. Serve in mugs or bowls with chunks of warm crusty bread.

Tip For a hot non-alcoholic punch to serve with the stew, pour a large carton of apple juice into a saucepan. Core and slice 2 small apples and add to the pan with one thinly sliced lemon and a couple of cinnamon sticks. Heat gently for about 10 minutes, then pour in 1 litre of ginger ale. Heat through for a further minute then serve in heatproof glasses or tumblers.

Sparse or unruly brows are equally ageing. If you’ve over-plucked in the past, fill-out your brows by using both a good quality eyebrow pencil and eyebrow powder, in a colour that’s one shade lighter than your hair, to add subtle definition. Bushy brows need to be carefully shaped. First, remove any hair that grows beyond your upper brow line - do this by brushing your eyebrows up with a brow brush - and snipping off the long ends. Then, brush the hair downwards in the opposite direction and cut the hairs that extend past the lower brow line. Gradually tweeze away hairs in a line that tapers when you reach the peak of your arch. Take a little from each brow at a time and keep them both looking even.

Lips look best when they’re relaxed. Many of us clench and tense our lips, making them look smaller, harder and altogether less kissable. Relax

them by parting them a little, this makes them look instantly fuller. Get super soft lips by applying a generous amount of lip balm all over, then gently exfoliate using a dry toothbrush or facecloth to remove all dead skin and reveal kissable soft lips. Finish off by applying some more balm.

Open up your eyes in an instant by carefully lining along your top lashes with a black liquid eyeliner - brown works well with blonde hair and is a softer alternative to black if you’re more mature. Position eyelash curlers at the base of your top lashes and gently squeeze. Set with a few coats of either black or brown mascara, depending on which eyeliner shade you select. ou may have spotted us cycling around the highways and byways of Bisterne this year early on the Sunday morning after judging in our hi-vis cycling gear taking snaps of all the Festival entries - and no, we weren’t part of the display as one cheeky resident suggested! In fact we were almost too early and caught TheTyrells Ford Family still hastily erecting their witty tableaux - but it was all well worth the effort for them, with a well deserved 3rd prize! And I think our favourites and obviously the judges’ were the topical George and the Dragon (with a nod towards the mythical Bisterne Dragon?) and of course the Scarecrow Summer Fete which was an event all by itself! News from Ringwood School Celebrating Excellent A Level Results Ringwood School is celebrating another year of excellent A Level examination results. Provisional results indicate that the year group achieved a 100% pass rate A*- E grades overall across over 30 different subject areas. 52% of all grades awarded were A*- B and over 25% achieved A* - A grades. When measured against the latest national benchmarks available Ringwood remains significantly above the national benchmarks for both high grades and pass grades at A Level. A 100% pass rate was achieved by students following BTEC courses. 30 distinction* / distinction results were awarded, accounting for 68% of all BTEC results in Sport and Production. 18 students achieved three or more grades at A*- A, the highest individual results being awarded to Jennifer Baldwin, Ben Karkera and Jack Pomeroy. Joe Hussey gained 3 A*/A grades and achieved full marks on both his English Literature and Geography papers. Not surprisingly therefore, the majority of our university applicants have already secured places at their preferred institutions. What makes

Jenny Baldwin, Joe Hussey and Charlotte Reid these results even more impressive is that 100% of the students who began a two year A Level programme in 2011 completed their studies in 2013, demonstrating outstanding retention and success. My congratulations go to all the students who have worked so hard over the past two years to achieve these excellent results. elp-Hedgehog populations have declined by 50 % the last 25 years and could be extinct by the year 2050! Please take 5 minutes to make a difference to a hedgehog’s life to read and implement my tips.

ducate - Erinanceous Europaeus (hedgehog). They live in woodland, pasture, hedgerows, parks and gardens and breed in spring and autumn producing 4-5 babies. They can live for up to ten years but normally only 4 years in the wild. The hedgehog is a UK priority species meaning conservation measures are being put in place.

angers - Hedgehogs are declining due to loss of habitat & hedgerows, less rough field edges where hedgehogs forage, loss of suitable urban areas and an increase in the use of pesticides which kill the invertebrate which hedgehogs eat. Foxes and badgers also kill hedgehogs.

Emma’s Dream!

“It must have been a couple of years ago I had this dream,” said Emma, “that if I could open a shop this would greatly benefit the independence of all the residents living here.” Emma Budd, the Occupational Therapist at Bickerley Green nursing home, Ringwood gave much thought to the project and even asked the local Rotary Club of Ringwood to provide funds for a mobile trolley, which they were pleased to do. However, time went by, and Emma lost no sight of her main objective, to have a proper shop! Finally after two years of negotiations with the powers that be she was allocated a special room on the ground floor which was painted up, fitted out with shelving and a coffee bar. Thanks

to the generosity of Sainsburys and Ringwood & District Older Peoples Welfare Association and others, the shelves soon became stocked up with many of the day to day items likely to be required by the residents. This now was no ordinary shop! With coffee tables in front of the shop window under a colourful canopy (not that one needed protection from the rain indoors!) and inside were artefacts from yesteryear, a reminder of the residents’ younger days. Bickerley Green now has a focus point for the residents to socialize. “I am so grateful”, continued Emma, “that organisations like Rotary helped us from the start and gave us the encouragement we needed”

Obviously all the main planning is done by a very competent organising committee, but on the day, the organisation needs the support of hundreds of volunteers. This is because the Rotarians have all volunteered to help out. Membership of Rotary is not what one can get out of Rotary, but more of what one can put into Rotary. As the proceeds from the Ellingham Show go towards local charities, Rotarians are delighted to be able to contribute their time to the cause. Some people imagine Rotary is a networking organisation, within which to do business. This is not true, chambers of commerce do this quite well already. Apart from international and vocational activities, Rotary is very much concerned

with the local community. Ringwood is a typical example of a community. We all live within our own communities, we all want to support our local community. It is the local community spirit that makes a community. Things don’t just happen. Someone, somewhere needs to put a head above a parapet and become a mover or shaker, a catalyst, a thinker. The alluring charms of Italy’s Ligurian Coast

erhaps less well known than the Amalfi coastline in Southern Italy, but of equally stunning scenery, is the Ligurian coastline situated in the North-West of the country and easily reached from Pisa or Genoa. The rugged landscape, with its cliffs and rocky promontories lashed by the waves, the umbrella pine trees and, palms and vineyards hugging the coast and the plethora of colourful old villages and opulent villas, dotted here and there, contribute to the breathtaking charm of this region. The area known as the CinqueTerre has become designated a National Park. It consists of five delightful villages, each with their own unique charm: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Some of

them are old fishing villages perched precariously on the cliffs with old pastel coloured houses tumbling down to the sea. High above the water, one can see the terraced landscape of vineyards and olive groves and how narrow

by Bobbie Dawson paths have been established to facilitate the farming of the area and to forge links with the neighbouring villages. Nowadays the CinqueTerre has become a tourist hotspot, popular with walkers, keen to hike from one village to the next. Needless to say, at the height of the tourist season these paths can become somewhat congested, but for the more serious intrepid walker, there are plenty of less frequented pathways that will take one high in to the hills, leading to quaint little hamlets, where time seems to have stood still and one can recover in the only cafe, frequented by the locals (which is more like someone’s tiny living room!). Although there is plenty of accommodation available in Cinque Terre, in my view it is better to stay in one of the little seaside towns adjoining the area. Levanto for example, is just a few stops away on the train and gives you a flavour of an authentic Italian seaside town, without hordes of tourists milling around. One can sit watching the locals promenading or having their ‘passeggiata’ and savour the local food - plenty of fish of course, ranging from octopus to the speciality of white anchovies. For the midday snack try the delightful bread, known as focaccia, seeping with olive oil and with all manner of different toppings and of course, no visit to Italy would be complete without a visit to the Gelateria to try out the myriad of different flavours of ice-cream, including basil!

A further highlight of a visit to Liguria has to be a trip to Portofino. Formerly a sleepy little fishing harbour consisting of attractive dwellings in hues of pinks and yellow. Set in a bay of classic scenic beauty, it became a haven for the the rich and famous ‘glitterati’, lured by its magnetic charms from the 30’s onwards. This

is still in evidence today, with opulent hotels, such as the Splendido in the hills overlooking the bay, with its own helicopter pad for the arrival of some of its guests. The continuing signs of wealth abound with the luxury yachts and gin palaces moored in the bay. Nowadays Portofino has opened its doors to mass tourism with regular ferry and bus services to the bay and it is also on many cruiseship itineraries. Despite this, it has succeeded in retaining its charm. At the end of a days visit, your return to one of the more modest seaside towns near CinqueTerre will be even more welcoming, after the frenetic pace of Portofino. Relaxing over a glass of wine and an evening meal watching the sunset - just perfect!

Portrait of a Dorset Artist Shaftesbury based artist Annie Taylor has been a full time painter for the last eight years.

nnie started painting when she lived in America for three years. “I opened a studio and art gallery on the North Shore of Long Island with a local artist,” she recalls. “The studio enabled me to study and work alongside established professional painters.” On her return to the UK with her young daughter Beth, financial pressure forced her to put the brushes aside and she established a PR and event management company in London. Specialising in film, theatre and television she represented clients at the Cannes Film Festival for a number of years. International clients included Warner Bros, CNN, Thames TV, Central Television, S4C, TV-am, Hanna Barbera, Playboy and Jim Henson Productions Inc (The Muppets and the Fraggles). In 1990 she moved out of London, back to her roots in the west of England and started producing large outdoor festivals. Finally, when Beth went off to art school, the temptation to get back to painting was overwhelming. “In 2003 I took the decision to work at it full time,” says Annie. “I have now been working full time as a painter since 2005 and have exhibited in one woman and group shows in London and the South West of England.” She adds: “I have been passionate about the natural world since I was very small. My work is about that passion: not just the silence, the peace, the nurture for the spirit that the countryside can provide, but also its opposite face which can be harsh, threatening and wild. It is this sensuality in the natural environment that attracts me for which the very physical sensation of working with oil paint is perfect.” Annie is participating in A Sense of Place, part of the Dorset Visual Arts trail in October. Focus on Francis

Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals provide respected and highly regarded NHS care to hundreds of thousands of patients in East Dorset every year.

In national assessments and reports, these hospitals consistently perform at a high level against a range of key standards and quality indicators. Comprehensive surveys of patient views also paint a positive picture of how hospital care is viewed by those who receive it. Achieving these high standards requires a continued commitment to quality from the board of directors to the wards, and a sharp focus on providing truly patient-centred care. The tragic consequences of losing sight of these basic objectives were highlighted earlier this year in a damning report which examined the causes of substandard care provided by Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. The Francis Report, published in February, marked the culmination of a year-long public inquiry into the systemic failings at that trust, and sent reverberations throughout the NHS and further afield. At the heart of the report, its author, Robert Francis QC, called for a re-emphasis on ensuring the needs of patients come first. So how did hospitals in East Dorset respond to this report? At Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, it provided an opportunity to re-evaluate the fundamentals of how quality care is delivered and whether genuine emphasis was placed on each and every patient and their individual needs. In short, were they getting the basics right?

The report’s 290 recommendations were reviewed in detail as a matter of urgency in order to provide assurance that the failures identified at Mid Staffs could not be repeated here.

Each hospital also held a series of listening events, providing an opportunity for more than 300 staff working in a wide range of roles to discuss the Francis Report with members of both trust’s management boards. In addition, patient and public involvement groups were asked to give their views on the report and the care offered at their local hospitals. Understanding individual patient experiences and where care exceeds or falls short of expectations is vital, says Martin Smits, Director of Nursing and Patient Services at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. “It is all too easy in the wake of the terrible stories which emerged from Mid Staffs to forget the excellent work taking place in the NHS,” said Martin. “Locally, we know from national surveys that our patients rate both our hospitals highly, which is a huge encouragement to us and spurs us on to deliver even better care and service.” “What I believe is essential is peering underneath these headlines, to look at the factors that make an individual patient’s experience in hospital good, and where it could have been improved.” “We can only do that by listening to patients and our staff.” Paula Shobbrook, Director of Nursing at The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, agrees. “No one knows more about what is happening at the

forefront of patient care than those responsible for delivering it and those receiving it,” said Paula. “These experiences and viewpoints - good and bad - are essential in order for us, as board members, to know how we are doing.” “Trust boards receive a vast amount of information on quality and performance. Coupling this with the views of staff, as we have done through our postFrancis Report listening events, and the experiences of our patients, provides invaluable insight.” “Our ‘putting patients ﬁrst’ commitment is just that - it’s a highly visible declaration that our aim is to ensure that at all times our focus remains on our patients and nothing else.” Martin cites Poole Hospital’s longstanding commitment to patients - the Poole Approach – as a key factor in ensuring standards at his hospital remain consistently high. “The Poole Approach may have been introduced more than a decade ago, but its central tenet has never been more true - ‘patient centred care with dignity and respect for all’,” he said. Whichever way this commitment to the needs of patients is packaged, both Martin and Paula are in complete agreement on one issue - when it comes to high quality care, complacency is simply not an option.
