Dear Readers,
fter the disappointingly wet summer, we have been promised a stunning Autumn display this year which might make up for it. Arriving slightly later than normal according to the Forestry Commission, the last two weeks in October will be the best time for country walks to locations like our cover photo. This issue sadly sees the last in our stories of rescued cats since we have published all of Patricia’s current stories. “Viewed From My Window” encompassed all the ups and downs and highs and lows of caring for stray cats and will be missed by many of our readers who are animal lovers out there - my husband for one! Patricia’s book is still available though so look for the details on page 14. I’m sure word had gone
with best wishes,
round the local cat population that she was a really soft touch and there was always a meal and a nice soft bed on offer! Maybe we’ll be treated to the occasional feature in the future as I believe another cat has recently arrived! October 29th sees the clocks go back so with winter approaching we can turn our attention to a few of those jobs around the house, which have probably been neglected due to the garden needing constant attention during the wet summer this year. So if you want carpets cleaned, a chimney swept or a room decorated AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 46 and save yourself time, fuel and most importantly - money!

Steady academic growth for popular New Forest School
T
he non-selective, 3 -16, day and boarding independent school near Ringwood is celebrating another year of academic achievement with 2017 GCSE results continuing to show the significant improvements being made at the school in recent years. 100% of pupils gained 5 or more GCSE’s at A*C, including Maths and English, with nine subjects achieving 50% or more of their grades at A and A*. On average each pupil achieved over a grade more than they would normally be expected to achieve. Headmaster, Richard Milner-Smith expresses his delight: “For a non-selective school such as ourselves, these are fantastic results and I am thrilled for our Year 11 students. They have been brilliantly supported
by all the staff at our school, who also deserve enormous credit. One of my key targets as the new Head was to raise the academic profile of our school and I am delighted to see such great progress being made in this area. Young people are put under a huge amount of pressure in today’s world, but we know that by creating a happy, caring environment they will perform well and, importantly, will enjoy doing so” This summer has seen a new Science Laboratory and significant investment in the IT facilities at the school with a completely refurbished IT suite and the purchase of laptops. Viewed From My W indow A small selection of short stories written by Patricia Oliver from Horton near Wimborne, describing the ups and downs of caring for feral cats over the years with photos by J Santana-Martin.
I
Ginger’s First Run - part 2
decided it was time our newest cat Ginger went out for a walk. Not sure how he would react outside, I picked him up and placed him on the grass. He never moved! He did not know what to do. Was he agoraphobic? Was the grass a reminder of being lost and alone after falling or jumping from the window of the upstairs flat? After a while I brought him back in. I decided that perhaps if he was on a harness it would be easier to encourage him to walk hoping he would enjoy the experience. Another day and suitably harnessed up, he did not want to know, but I persevered and managed to get just a few steps out of him. He lay in the long grass and surveyed the area. Buttercups, grass hoppers and butterflies, it was all new.
I felt reassured that at least he would not be running away, so the next day I took off the harness and hoped that would make a difference. I walked away, turned and called him to come. It took a while, but he did take a few steps, then a few more, but soon wanted to go back to the patio. Perseverance was the key and after a few days he was happy to follow me around the field garden and even tried to catch a moth hovering in the grass. Henry had decided to come with us, but then felt he needed a good run, so took off at high speed back to the patio. Ginger was mesmerised and was not quite sure what to do. It took just a moment or two, then he managed to summon up the courage and he also ran, at first slowly, then seemed to put on a spurt and ran as fast as he could across the grass, his long fluffy coat billowing against the wind. You could see the thrill and excitement in his face. He was so pleased with himself. This was obviously the very first time he had had a run in all his life, what a new experience! That was it, now he had to get outside every day and he would walk for a while and then just had to have a good run as fast as his little legs could carry him.
Now he had to be outside as much as possible. During the day he might sit on the grass just under the ‘dickie bird’ tree where we hang all the nuts and seeds and I have seen him jump high enough that he caught hold of the fat ball holder, but fortunately the birds had flown away. In the evening he will sit on the patio and watch the deer and even the badgers coming and going. He does not move and they do not mind him, oblivious to everything except the peanuts put out for them. Ginger is fascinated by everything The grass outdoors, even the wind in is a new his fur. experience for Ginger! From 2am, Ginger would start scratching the door to go out and would continue to do so until we had had enough of it and let him out so we could get back to sleep, but fortunately it did not take too long for him to get into the routine that he has to sleep at night and is not let out until we get up. Now he spends all day outside exploring and he must walk miles. It did not take long before he decided sachets of cat food were very tasty, crunchy biscuits and his favourite meaty sticks and even a try of any other tasty morsels on offer, all go to make up a splendid varied diet.. Ginger has a new home, he is friendly with everyone and he has the freedom he craved, so hopefully no more jumping out of windows! The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £15.00 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on: 01202 826244. Any proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

head to generate a winner. Walking up to this car in the ‘Flair’ variant is visually striking with a new chunky shape featuring a stubby high bonnet, a contrasting roof colour and practical black extensions around the wheel arches, front, back and the ‘airbump’ panels let into the doors to offer side parking protection. Together with a superbly glossy white paint, a black roof and large alloy wheels, it looks a million dollars - the wide range of personalisation options help give this car a very special ‘look’. Open any door to be impressed by a funky interior displaying echoes of exterior colours, ‘mood’ lighting and a very generous helping of technology including instruments, 7” touch-screen and more personal technology connections than you can possibly imagine or use! So far, so good. My car came with the excellent light-turbo 1.5 litre ‘blue’ diesel featuring stop-start (with braking energy re-capture) and a 5-speed manual transmission. This gives crisp performance in this purposefully light car without setting the world on fire, while ensuring exhaust emissions less than 100mg and in line with Euro 6b. Just a word about emissions - current diesel engines complying with this latest standard have emissions equal to current petrol engines, so the mass hysteria which has been
generated about ‘dirty diesels’ certainly does not apply to this car - or indeed any other Euro 6b diesel car. We also need to be reminded that diesel fuel consumption is much less than petrol engines - this car was determined to exceed 56mpg at all times and that compares very favourably with petrol cars which use 30-50% more fuel. A big saving in your pocket, and for the environment. To drive, a very characterful car although I thought it could have easily used a 6th gear for the motorway - or their excellent automatic gearbox. Handling was excellent with a lot of electric assistance at walking speeds, while on the motorway being ‘idled’ to save fuel/emissions and to give a very direct, sporty steering feel. Thankfully this directness and control came without the horrid stiff ‘boy racer’ suspension which afflicts many of its competitors, also partly due to very comfortable and supportive bucket seats. On the safety front, this car had a whole host of safety features that are legally mandatory, plus speed limit warning, sign-reading, lane departure warning, coffee break alert, non-adaptive cruise control and emergency brake assist. Yes, I would be delighted to have one of these cars in my garage, although I suspect the huge choice of colour schemes on offer could lead to argument. I should be so lucky!

e may struggle to visualise the former Citroen C3, a car which struck a decidedly middle-of-theroad stance as an inexpensive small-medium hatchback with 5 doors, somewhere between a Fiesta and Focus in size, but offering class-leading space and economy. However, the rounded and ambiguous styling endeared it only to those who needed practicality and did not wish to be recognised. That having been said, as a used car buy the pricing, running costs and value are hard to beat. The old C3 would make a sound proposition for new drivers. So, to the new Citroen C3 which replaces it. How to describe it? Something funky, interesting, stand-out individual. This car is entirely new, much more radically styled and aggressive looking. It comes in a huge range of colour combinations and interiors - plus of course the wide range of peppy and economical power trains for which the Peugeot group is well known. Tips to help communicate with dementia sufferers
W
hen we think about communicating, our first instinct is to speak, but there are times when communication consists of much more than just a verbal conversation. When communicating with someone with dementia, there are many things to consider, and remember that talking isn’t always the most effective method. Here are some ideas to help with communication: Acknowledge what the person has said. Even if they don’t answer your question, express that you’ve heard them and encourage them to say more about their answer. Use gestures, movement and facial expressions. Physical signs and body language can all convey meaning and help get messages across, especially when speaking becomes more difficult. Use Humour. Laughing can help to bring you closer together, and may relieve the pressure. Become an active listener. Listening is a very important aspect of engaging with someone with dementia. Look for non-verbal cues such as facial expressions and body language to try and understand what they are
trying to tell you. Let the person express their feelings. If the person is feeling sad, don’t try and persuade them away from that feeling. Showing you care by just listening is sometimes the best method of communicating. Use physical contact to provide reassurance. Holding or patting the person’s hand or putting your arm around them might be all that is needed to let them know you are there for them. Use visual clues. Writing your messages down or using objects or pictures to help the person understand could help alleviate a breakdown in communication. Communication difficulties can be frustrating and upsetting for people with dementia as well as their carers and loved ones. Active listening, non-verbal communication, visual props and laughter are just a few ways to help alleviate some of the tensions you may experience when engaging with those living with dementia. If you would like to speak to someone at Home Instead, please do not hesitate to get in touch. 01202 912826 www.homeinstead.co.uk/eastdorset

Inspired By Colour By Katherine Sorrell
Home & Interiors
T
he story of colour is the story of society, of fashion, of the way we live, of science, of art – in fact, of mankind itself. We look at all aspects of colour, from its history to this year’s most fashionable shades. Did you know there was a time when green wallpaper could kill? Or that a very expensive dye was made from boiled snails? In the Palaeolithic era - about 35,000 years ago - Stone Age man began to create cave paintings using earth pigments mixed with resin, water or glue made from animal bones and hides. For centuries the most widely used natural pigments were extracted from soil and rocks, plants, insects and animals. Ash and chalk were also basics; at a price, however, strong, bright pigments or dyes could be extracted from other sources, such as ultramarine blue from ground lapis lazuli gemstones or Tyrian purple, where 10,000 boiled snails produced just
one gram of dye. Historically, the use of colour was governed by ease of availability and thus cost. The richest colours were always reserved for the most important parts of religious and royal interiors. In the Georgian period, the affordable ‘common’ colours included stone and timber colours, greys and whites – in the form of distemper and white lead. Middle class households would often use the slightly more expensive oil colours such as ‘drab’ (dull brownish grey), olive, pea green and sky blue. More expensive paints included pink, lemon, orange and straw colour, while the most costly were verdigris, ultramarine and smalt, a glittering blue. Everything changed from the early 19th century, when chemists began to develop synthetic colours at lower cost. Many new colours were developed and old ones were improved - though
an exception was Emerald Green, commercially available from 1814 to the early 1900s, as fumes from wallpaper printed with the arsenic-based ink could be deadly. The new Victorian palette included bottle greens, gold, burgundy, crimson, rose, violet and mahogany, as well as intense chemical yellows, blues and greens. Edwardian hues became softer and paler and, ever since, colour has followed the roller-coaster of fashion and scientific advances: from the ‘greenery-yallery’ of the Aesthetic movement to the brilliant white produced by the introduction of titanium dioxide in 1916 and from the sorbet colours of the Fifties right through to the pinks, blues and greens of 2017. It’s fair to say that the modern world of colour has no limits. MAIn IMAGE: Plushious quilted and hand-embroidered bedspread in velvet by Linum, £320, The French Bedroom Company: 01444 415 430; frenchbedroomcompany.co.uk.
What are this year’s most fashionable colours? Greenery: Colour authority Pantone’s colour of 2017, Greenery is described as ‘a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew’. Greenery is ideal for adding pops of colour in the form of cushions, cupboard fronts or vases. It also lends itself
beautifully to the botanicals trend that’s so hot right now.
and post-pretty, and it’s literally everywhere.
millennial PinK: Also known as Tumblr Pink and Scandi Pink, Millennial Pink is a soft, dusky pink that was inspired by Wes Anderson’s film The Grand Budapest Hotel and the rose gold iPhone. It’s been called gender-neutral
Denim Drift: Dulux’s colour of the year for 2017, Denim Drift is versatile and easy to use in every room of the house, from kitchen cupboards and soft furnishings to floor coverings and entire walls. It’s easy to co-ordinate with, too.

S
unday 13th August was the first day of the 15th Annual Bisterne Scarecrow Festival and like many previous years the weather was very favourable. So we donned our cycling kit, pumped up our tyres and set off on the annual trip round Bisterne. Always a treat and this year it seemed that quite a few had taken to bicycles to view what the imaginations of those Bisterne folk had to offer! Despite having a year to prepare there were some that were actually still being created so we couldn’t include those! The Avon Tyrell’s
Humpty Trumpty had just about been finished when we rolled up and was another clever satirical tableaux! A huge amount of effort and thought had gone into the Hive Of Activity and as always though, lots of imaginative and some very witty scarecrows and quite a few clever ‘interactive’ tableaux. Well done to all of you and we look forward to the next 15 years!

Fordingbridge Players Autumn Production
D
Curtain Up by Peter Quilter
The Victoria Rooms, Fordingbridge 23, 24, 25th November 2017
rama fans make a note in your diaries as the Fordingbrodge Players will be performing their autumn production at The Victoria Rooms, Fordingbridge in November.
premiered in 2004 and has been performed more than 100 times in the last decade This mixture of comedy and drama has something to suit everyone and is a production not to be missed!
Directed by Sarah Farr, the mastermind behind our 2016 sell out production of The Railway Children, Curtain Up is the hilarious story of five women who inherit equal shares in a dilapidated theatre and plan to bring it back to life again. They try various fund-raising schemes but their most ambitious is to hold a concert featuring local talent and a worldfamous star who agrees to appear for no fee! However, their plans go awry and it’s a race to keep their audience from guessing the truth of the matter.
Performances will be held in The Victoria Rooms, Fordingbridge over three consecutive nights starting Thursday 23rd November at 7.30pm. Tickets will be available in October either on-line via the website www.fordingbridgeplayers.org.uk or from Jessica’s, High Street, Fordingbridge, Tel: 01425 652395 at £8 each.
A fast-paced and very funny comedy which
The Fordingbridge Players are always happy to welcome new members: you don’t have to want to act as they need plenty of backstage and technical help too. Check out their website for details of how to join.

The Courage To Be Yourself
M
By Christina Smith
any people are upset when their relationships are over because they are unable to feel a sense of resolution. They spend time trying to work out what went wrong, often trying to understand the nature of the other person so that they can somehow resolve the situation. A person might say ‘I’m so upset because if they really knew who I was then things would be different.’ This is mostly because either they and/or their partner was not able to be their true selves, become vulnerable, ask for what they want, air their grievances, express their fears, and be truly known. Usually this is because they fear rejection, upsetting the other person or fear losing the relationship. However, this is a crucial relationship ingredient and without it long lasting commitment may be difficult to achieve. Having the courage to be yourself doesn’t mean being controlling, demanding or officious. Letting yourself be known means talking to people honestly, calmingly working through differences and facing up to the reality of the situation. It ultimately means saying ‘I don’t agree,’ ‘I don’t like that,’ ‘I feel scared/uncomfortable,’ ‘I don’t agree,’ ‘I’m feeling angry.’ For some people the fear of being known stops them from saying ‘I love you,’ or ‘I am so happy!’ The thought of letting their guard down enough to become vulnerable can be very scary indeed. Sometimes love is too precious for words. In other words, people can fear that asking too many questions or saying

Fordingbridge Twinning News
O
n Saturday 14 October, Tim Wheatley and Dave Green, members of the Fordingbridge Twinning Association, will be riding a tandem from Le Havre to Vimoutiers to mark the 35th Anniversary of the Twinning between the towns of Fordingbridge and Vimoutiers. Tim first visited Vimoutiers as a boy before the official twinning charter was ever signed when Fordingbridge Football Club visited Vimoutiers for a friendly tournament and has been visiting Vimoutiers ever since.
On the occasion of the official signing of the twinning charter, 6 people from Fordingbridge rode to Vimoutiers from Le Havre on tandems to celebrate the arrival of Fordingbridge. Tim and Dave will follow the same route as the one used in 1982. For further details about forthcoming events, to join in with the annual festivities in Vimoutiers or to join us at our annual dinner which will have come from Vimoutiers call Alison (Chairman) or Derek (Ayling) on 01425 650770, or email: hippotrain@btinternet.com

Are you a Unitarian without knowing it?
R
egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.
If you are not helped by the traditional answers about community, compassion, and what life’s all about, perhaps you instead need to find people who keep playing with and celebrating the questions.

Autumn Entertainment From new releases to true classics, there’s plenty to keep you entertained from our choice of books this Autumn. politics and extremism to love and family ties. However, Shamsie’s skilful writing means the themes never suffocate the story. A powerful book.
Book Reviews
How to Stop Time – Matt Haig Tom Hazard looks like he’s 40, but he’s been alive for centuries. People notice when you age so slowly, so Tom has to change his identity every eight years – a new name, new job, new friends. Falling in love isn’t an option and it’s best not to get too attached to anyone, as they’ll only die. But Tom craves an ordinary life. Beautifully written, this book is begging to be devoured in one sitting. Home Fire – Kamila Shamsie After years of raising her younger siblings, Isma is free to live her own life and to start a career in America. Back in the UK, her sister, Aneeka, is struggling in a society that sees her hijab as a threat. Enter Eamonn, the son of a well-known London politician, who will have a lasting effect on both women. This reimagining of Sophocles’ Antigone covers some pretty big issues, from religion,
Entrepreneurial You – Dorie Clark If you’re fed up of the daily grind and fancy setting up on your own, this book might prove a good starting point. The tagline is a good indication of the content – ‘Monetize Your Expertise, Create Multiple Income Streams, and Thrive’. Clark offers advice on choosing what to do, building your brand and finding people to buy from you. There are plenty of case studies to be inspired by and, unlike many other business books, it’s not too heavy a read. The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood Now a critically acclaimed TV series, The Handmaid’s Tale was first published in 1985. The US government has been overthrown by a fundamentalist Christian organisation, which strips women of their rights. Birth rates have plummeted and, as one of the few fertile women left, June is forced to become a handmaid to a powerful
commander, Fred. Renamed Offred, her sole purpose is to bear her master’s children. Gripping. Extracted Trilogy – RR Haywood Harry Madden died after blowing up a German base in WW2. Safa Patel saved the prime minister, before being killed by terrorists. Ben Ryder was hit by a train while trying to stop armed men blowing up an underground station. Now these three heroes find themselves ‘extracted’ from their untimely deaths, by a man with a time-machine who wants them to save the world. A thoroughly enjoyable read, with a tightly-written plot, great characters and plenty of action. The Break – Marian Keyes Bestselling author Marian Keyes’ latest book centres around forty-something Amy, whose husband Hugh has decided he wants a break. It’s not that he doesn’t love her; he just wants some time for himself. Six months’ worth of time in fact. But if he’s on a break, then surely Amy deserves a bit of freedom too? An amusing, easy read for curling up with on a cold winter’s evening.

he UN founded World Space Week in 1999 to celebrate “the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition.” It’s now the largest space event in the world, with 86 countries holding 2,700 events last year. This year’s theme is ‘Exploring New Worlds in Space’, and here we look at four major projects the Week will highlight. New Horizons: Pushing the Boundaries The New Horizons spacecraft was launched on 19th January 2006, beginning NASA’s first mission to reconnoitre Pluto and venture into the distant Kuiper Belt. It conducted a six-month-long reconnaissance of the dwarf planet Pluto and its moons in summer 2015. With NASA approval, the spacecraft will head further into the vast Kuiper Belt, where it will study another of the ancient, tiny worlds, over a billion miles beyond Neptune’s orbit. The mission will provide information about the surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres of these bodies and how ‘ice dwarfs’, like Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, evolved. It may also tell us more about four previously unknown moons of Pluto - Nix, Hydra, Styx and Kerberos – which were discovered using the Hubble Telescope.
World Space Week
4th to 10th October The Orion: Human-Rated Deep Space Exploration Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor building the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle -NASA’s first spacecraft for long-duration, human-rated deep space exploration. Orion is intended to transport up to six astronauts to destinations beyond low Earth orbit, such as asteroids, the moon and eventually Mars, and return them safely to Earth. It can withstand re-entry speeds of over 20,000 miles per hour. It will enable NASA to extend sustainable, affordable human and robotic exploration across the solar system, developing innovative technology and infrastructure to take space exploration even farther. Space X: Planning for Our Move to Mars Founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft “with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets.” In 2010, it became the only private company ever to return a spacecraft from lowEarth orbit, and in 2012 made history again when its Dragon spacecraft took cargo to and from the International Space Station. It now runs regular NASA resupply missions and will be transporting crew to the ISS as early as 2018. SpaceX is currently developing the Falcon Heavy,
the world’s most powerful rocket, and working on fully and rapidly reusable rockets, which will make space exploration more affordable and reliable. This year it successfully achieved the first reflight of an orbital class rocket. Planetary Resources: Unlocking the Solar System’s Economy The vision of Planetary Resources is “to expand the economy into space.” The company focuses on developing technology to mine near-Earth X-type asteroids (rich in precious metals) and extract water from C-type asteroids. To this end, they’re developing prospector craft capable of surveying asteroids for prolonged periods and then impacting or landing on them to take measurements. The Arkyd 3 deployed into lowEarth orbit from the ISS in July 2015 and successfully tested its core prospecting capabilities. Arkyd 6 is scheduled to launch this year to test increased prospecting and space-based observation technologies. Before mining precious metals, Planetary Resources intends to produce fuel in space from water-rich carbonaceous chondrites that can be broken down into highly efficient LOX/H2 rocket fuel.
