he photo on this issue’s cover illustrates our local quirky autumn tradition of Pannage which happens annually in The Forest and is one of my most favourite times of the year. It’s also unnerving and slightly alarming - especially during what you assume will be a peaceful autumnal bike ride through the Forest which was when the cover picture was taken! Instead of meeting the usual quietly grazing ponies, donkeys and cattle, you are suddenly confronted with a largish group of untethered pigs busily hoovering up acorns (which are poisonous to ponies and cattle) with their accompanying happy grunting. Just one of The Forest’s autumnal delights! Maybe you remember the newspaper reports around this time last

ld photographs of the middle of Ringwood High Street are hard to come by. The photograph taken in 1988 shows only part of two cottages to the left of Pedlar’s Walk. About a hundred years ago a dairy run by Leonard Martin occupied the shop on the right, 28 High Street. Later this became the Thorn family’s shoe and shoe repair shop for many years. By 1988 it had been taken over by Bollom, a chain which combined shoe repairs with dry cleaning. More recently it was a carpet shop until last year the premises underwent a major refit and became the office of solicitors Dixon & Templeton. Ringwood High Street’s smallest shop has to be what for many years was a sweet shop known as The Chocolate Box. It is too tiny to have its own postal address as it is really part of 30 High Street. Recently the shop September 2018 has become a

new venture, Cake Love run by Julie Costain, selling home-made cupcakes and cakemaking accessories. In the early part of the 20th century the whole of 30 High Street had been occupied by ‘druggist’ Mrs Laura Parkin. She was probably only selling patent medicines as it is unlikely she was a qualified pharmacist. Mrs Parkin also described herself as a stationer. By 1939 this shop had become a fishmongers owned by Mr. T.W. Steele and Sons. During the middle of the 20th century both cottages were heavily modernised with new windows and different shop fronts. By the 1980s 30 High Street had become Belinda’s bakery (a small part of its blind can be glimpsed on the extreme left of the 1988 photograph). Today this shop is owned by Reeve and is now the only remaining bakery in the High Street.

October is Blindness Awareness Month

his annual event is truly global in nature with organisations around the world raising awareness of a range of issues surrounding blindness and visual impairment. The leading causes of sight loss include cataracts, age related macular degeneration, glaucoma and other retinal diseases. It is very easy to quote statistics but this sometimes overlooks the fact that these numbers represent real people all affected by some degree of visual impairment and facing the daily challenges that this can bring. The World Health Organisation and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness established the second Thursday of each October as World Sight Day, promoting the importance of good eye care and raising public awareness about blindness. Scotland’s largest vision impairment organisation, Royal Blind, organises National Braille Week 8-14 October, raising awareness of the importance of Braille and other alternative formats that open up the written word to people with visual impairments and, across the

preading out from the ‘Columbia’, the largest icefield in the Rockies, Athabasca is among the world’s most accessible glaciers, a popular day trip from Lake Louise, Jasper or even Banff, though this involves a longer drive. Winding along the Continental Divide, past soaring peaks, forests, waterfalls and lakes, the Icefields Parkway leads almost to the very edge, near the meeting point of the Jasper and Banff National Parks. Up there the Discovery Centre is the first point of call with exhibits on the history and movements of the ice and the area’s natural world. It is the perfect introduction before tackling the day’s adventure but one should be prepared for changing weather and high altitude, with the glacier’s average height around 3,000 metres. There are walking trails for the brave and wellorganised treats in season, led by knowledgeable and highly entertaining guides. First on anyone’s list is the award-winning skywalk, just a

five minute bus transfer from the centre. Built into the rock, carefully integrated into the environment with near-zero footprint, it begins along a vertiginous cliff’s edge then steps out on a semi-circular look out with a glass floor, perched 280 metres above the valley. There you are, suspended between heaven and earth, the Sunwapta river meandering far below, the red craggy rocks almost within arm’s reach, the soaring birds, mighty glaciers and snow-covered peaks rising all around. Even more exciting is the iconic ride on one of the giant Ice Explorers. The first few minutes include a steep scary descent on a stone track until you reach the edge of the Athabasca, a tongue of ice, six km long and thicker in places than the Eiffel Tower. Glacial vistas, snowy mountains etched into the sky, it’s like the end of the world, even though the Explorer can only venture so far on the crunchy surface. The ice is pure blue in places as this is the only colour it

cannot absorb. Then the ‘giant’ stops, giving you ten minutes or so to walk around the safe icy section. No one ventures beyond the danger cones for untouched snow and ice are amazingly thick, dotted with hidden crevasses and water holes where lives have been lost. Sometimes a deep rumble echoes in the thin mountain air and you might spot an avalanche tumbling down the slope just ahead of you. Don’t expect to be alone on the glacier, it is highly popular, but whatever the crowds, you can switch off and commune with the natural world, so mighty and inspiring. Visitors leaving before dusk are likely to see bears and elks close to the road, and those on the way to Jasper might enjoy the last rays of the sun on the Athabasca waterfall. Meanwhile, high above on the edge of the glacier, the lucky ones settle down in the lodge for a starlit night. Strange noises in the dark may remind them that the Athabasca is always on the move, receding by around five metres a year.

utumn is a colourful time of year here on the nature reserve, with the trees displaying ceilings of golden leaves and fungi beginning to carpet the woodland floor. On your visit to Blashford Lakes look out for the popular fly agarics along with shaggy inkcaps, earth stars and the more subtle but aptly named candle snuff fungus on the tops of logs. On a sunny day look out for insects still on the wing, including red admiral and peacock butterflies and common darter and migrant hawker dragonflies. Late October may offer the first sightings of a bittern, however last winter they passed us by. Fingers crossed one or more will perceive the reedbeds around Ivy Lake as suitable habitat this year - as the reeds die back it is usually easier to see this secretive bird as it has fewer places to hide. Increasing numbers of ducks will be gathering on the water,

including gadwall, pochard, tufted duck, teal, shoveler, wigeon and golden eye. The reserve’s kingfishers have had another good breeding season and you may be lucky enough to spot one frequenting a perch, as it keeps a keen eye on the water below. Another bird likely to be spotted fishing in the shallows is the great white egret, which spends the Autumn and Winter on our Lake shores after a summer in France. As the nights draw in, this time of year is perfect for watching the starling murmurations and increasing number of birds coming into roost on Ibsley Water. Thousands of gulls, geese and goosander use the lakes as their resting place as it provides a safe refuge after dark. As well as looking out for roosting birds you can also watch out for bats emerging for their night’s feed and listen out for dark bush crickets who can be heard chirping at this time of year.

To discover more about our nocturnal wildlife join Education Officer Jim Day for an evening night walk on Friday 26th October. Learn about and set (live!) small mammal traps before heading off into the night to find bats, moths and owls, with the option to return the following morning to check and release your catch of mice and voles. Octagonal Eastern Sunrise

a small SUV MG crossover named ‘ZS’. Is there any carry-over from the MGs of old? Not so you’d notice. This car is made in China by the inheritors of the MG name and historical British know-how. Engineering detail and styling is generated in Longbridge UK where the Chinese have maintained a small presence as they believed the UK was their entry point to Europe but with the Brexit spoiler, this may never be. This most advanced MG yet is carefully engineered. For instance - the close attention paid to visible interior and exterior quality, the ride and handling are no longer choppy and uncomfortable. In fact very much closer to current state of the art. Overall, this has become a most pleasant driving proposition. The driveline has two distinct options, both at the leading edge of fuel economy and exhaust emissions, but without compromising the driving experience. Simply choose manual or automatic gearbox and trim level. With the 1.5 litre petrol engine and manual gearbox this car will cover

ground surprisingly quickly yet still achieve over 40mpg. The ‘auto’ specification brings a tiny 1.0 litre turbo petrol engine electronically matched to the automatic gearbox for maximum economy.- I am still very surprised by this achievement in blending spritely performance with huge economy. Cecil Kimber - who in the 40s took stock Morris saloons and turned them into efficient MG sport cars - would have been very proud of this car. The only demerits I experienced were window glass which was only very faintly tinted, and with the accelerator pedal being the same height as the brake pedal and very close no good for smooth driving or ‘heel-and-toe’ gear-changes - it was far too easy to rev the engine when braking.. In practical use this car is easy-going. Enter through large door openings, sit high in large leather seats while the surroundings show quality and fit. Even with 5 aboard, boot space is surprisingly very large and this is multiplied by popping down the split rear seats. The driver has a carefully thought-out array of instruments including sat-nav and infotainment sockets. So, being easy-going to drive, the whole ZS experience is very pleasant. At this price point, an unassailably practical proposition, priced from £13k to £18k and with a 7-year warranty - what’s not to like?

t’s all the fashion, my dears. The small hatchback merges with the sports utility vehicle to become a much more vertical car than experienced previously - here is the now-popular Crossover. Volume car maker are ‘at it’, some providing them in a range of sizes to suit most pockets and physical circumstances. And practical too, as our British population becomes wider, heavier, less mobile and dare I say on average, older? Easier to get into, see an elevated view of the boot in front, get more storage space and all within a smaller footprint - well that’s the theory. We have seen that as new models are unleashed to production, they become not only a few inches taller but a fraction wider and longer. Oh, but almost invariably with far less emissions than before - both petrol and diesel. An MG sits on my driveway. The badge says ‘MG’ but this is no traditional MG, no sports car image whatsoever, but

Becoming a Foster Carer

ens of thousands of children enter the care system in the UK every year. If you think you could help, read on to find out more about fostering, including how to go about it and how much you could earn.

WHO CAN FOSTER? Foster carers come from a range of backgrounds. You’ll need to: • Be at least 21. • Have the right to live in the UK permanently. • Have a spare bedroom. • Have enough time to look after a child. You don’t need to be in a relationship or own your own home, and you can have a job. You don’t need any qualifications, but previous experience with children is beneficial. WHAT TYPES OF FOSTERING ARE THERE? There are lots of different types of foster care. Some children only need a shortterm placement. Others need a long-term home. You could even just offer emergency, overnight, weekend or respite care if you prefer. You could also choose to foster a young parent and their child. Both would live with you and you’d help the parent to develop

by Kate Duggan their skills until they were able to care for the child independently. WHAT KIND OF CHILDREN NEED FOSTERING? Children from all backgrounds, and of all abilities and ages, find themselves in foster care. Many end up returning to their birth families or going on to be adopted. Some children have complex emotional or physical needs. Sometimes, foster carers specialise in a particular age group, whether it’s babies and toddlers, primary school children or teenagers. Some people focus on caring for disabled children or children seeking asylum. Your case worker will talk to you about what type of placement would be best for you. HOW MUCH COULD I EARN? The minimum weekly allowance per foster child starts from £127. Older children have greater allowances, as do children with special needs. So, for example, if you fostered a nine year old and a 15 year old, you’d receive at least £302 for each week you looked after them. That money would need to cover the child’s food, clothes, toys and other expenses.

Foster carers are sometimes paid a fee on top of the allowance. The amount you’ll receive will depend on the foster service you go through, and the needs of the child you foster. Many foster carers earn more than £500 a week for each child they foster. Foster carers get considerable tax relief on the money they earn from fostering. Foster payments also don’t usually have an effect on welfare benefits. WHAT SUPPORT WOULD I GET? You’d attend training programmes and be matched with your own social worker, who would be there to support you. Some services also have additional support available, such as a 24-hour helpline. HOW DO I APPLY? You can foster through your local council, or through an independent fostering service. The application and assessment process usually takes around six to eight months. Confusion and Anxiety in Relationships

re you confused and feeling anxious in a relationship when perhaps nothing traumatic is happening?

You may not be in an abusive relationship, or one that is overly dramatic but when doing normal run of the mill things, like having dinner with your partner and something is said, or something is not said, you feel ignored, slighted, or shut out. At that moment you find yourself imploding, confused, your mind feels overly active. You may find yourself wanting to say something at that moment but you don’t know what to say or have the words. People who are in distressed relationships often find themselves incongruent with their partner, confused about what they are feeling and what to do about it. They convince themselves that there must be something wrong with them, and they feel the need to talk themselves out of the panic, or the anxiety they are feeling. There may be a profound sense of loss which comes out of the blue and they are left feeling misunderstood and perhaps they want their partner to reach out to them. It’s so confusing for their partner also, as they can’t read minds or often understand the level and degree of the reaction or over reaction. Most people react to the intensity of the emotion they are feeling at that time. If you can relate to this, you may have a history of interacting with adults which has reinforced insecure relating. This may result in insecure attachment issues. If we carry on feeling this way, we are in danger of shutting down or disconnecting from our adult self. Ultimately, we need to parent ourselves and sooth our emotional state,

all about the Scarycrows from the children and their mum who created them, had a nice chat to the lovely lady owner of the Bisterne Royals and an even longer chinwag with the Fireman’s creator (a late addition not on the map!) a relative newcomer to the area but his family have obviously embraced living at Bisterne already! The only downside to the afternoon was that my husband fell off his bike...again! Previously it was into a nice soft verge of nettles but this time he caught a nasty case of road rash! Maybe he should look where he’s going for a change!

New Forest Forge play ‘Hidden’ set to cause waves

new play that tackles issues of bigotry and hate has received Arts Council England funding and is set to hit the stage from the 21 September. Forest Forge Theatre’s production of Hidden will be touring to schools and venues throughout September to November. The play tells the story of Alix, a white British 14-year-old girl, and Samir, a young Iraqi refugee. After intervening a racist attack on Samir, Alix finds herself building a new friendship. We watch their friendship grow as they rescue a stranger from the sea and are faced with making some tough decisions between what’s morally right and the rule of law. Currently in rehearsals, the play adapted by playwright Vickie Donoghue, is based on the novel ‘Hidden’ by Miriam Halahmy. Director Stuart Mullins says, “Nearly two

weeks of rehearsal have passed and already we have learnt so much about Vickie’s play. The more I hear it the more I realise how immediate and relevant the themes and issues are that she’s taken from Miriam’s original novel.” The play consists of a cast of three - Alix, Samir and the refugee rescued from the sea. Set on a beach in Hayling Island, we follow a story that demonstrates how friendships can cross indiscernible boundaries. After its debut public performances at Forest Forge Theatre on the 21 and 22 September, the play will head out on tour to schools and venues across Hampshire, Essex, and London. Generic USB drive, Sometimes it’s a crucial bit of kit getting damaged. Unfortunately no piece of technology lasts forever, any device can be stolen or damaged and any digital file can be deleted or corrupted. If it contains something that really matters to you – your priceless family photos or home videos, perhaps, or your university dissertation, or the book that’s going to make you a superstar – then any problems could be catastrophic. So how do you prevent problems from becoming Halloween horrors? The first thing to do is to ensure that you have more than one copy of anything important. For example, if you store all your photos on your phone you should make sure you have copies of all of

them on your PC too: if your phone was to be stolen and you didn’t have backups of your photos, they’d be gone forever. You can also use online services such as Apple’s iCloud or Google Photos to store your snaps on Apple or Google’s computers. Other services from the likes of Flickr and DropBox can do the same. That means if you lose your phone or PC, you can still download the photos to a different phone or PC later. Those services aren’t just limited to photos, either. You can use them to store and share documents of any kind. A really good way to have backups is to get an external hard disk. If you have a recent PC or Mac you have USB 3.0 ports, which are much faster than the USB 2.0 ports in older computers. That means you can take advantage of super-speedy USB 3.0 drives. You don’t need to spend much to get a good one: for example, Toshiba’s Canvio Basics is currently £44.99 for 1TB of space, more than enough for even the biggest photo library. Even a massive drive such as the 4TB WD My Passport is less than £100. There are other ways to copy files, such as USB sticks and DVD discs (if your computer has a DVD burner), but we wouldn’t WD My Passport external drive

recommend them. USB sticks aren’t really made to last and they’re easy to lose, while DVD discs take ages to burn, don’t have much storage capacity and aren’t particularly well-suited to long term storage. So far we’ve talked about prevention. What about cure? One of the most common computer, tablet or phone disasters is a liquid spill. If that happens to you, turn the device off immediately and if it’s a laptop, turn it upside down so the keyboard is facing down. Whatever you

do, don’t turn it back on until you’re sure it’s completely dry inside. If it isn’t, you could cause a short-circuit that’ll ruin the computer. Have you heard the one about putting a phone in a sealed bag of rice? That works, because the rice draws out the moisture – but it takes at least two days to work. As with laptops, keep the phone off until it’s completely dry.

The History of the Remembrance Day Poppy by Catherine Rose

With celebrations to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, the humble but striking poppy will once again be evident as a symbol of hope and remembrance. But what is its history? Over the four years that the Great War raged, the fields of Flanders in Belgium that saw much of the bloody trench warfare were decimated. But like some miracle of life triumphing over death, out of this devastation grew hundreds of field poppies.

History

Part of the papaver family (papaver rhoeas), the Flanders Poppy, as it came to be known, thrived in the barrenness – its bright red colour echoing the bloodshed and a perfect symbol of hope for the future. Canadian WW1 soldier and poet John McCrae wrote the now famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ about their significance in 1915. After reading a copy of McCrae’s poem, American University Professor Moina Michael was so moved that she promptly

went out to Wannamaker’s – a department store in New York – and bought all the artificial poppies they had. She then sold them as souvenirs of remembrance under the banner ‘keep the faith’. Due to Moina’s efforts, the National American Legion adopted the poppy as their symbol, agreeing to wear it on Armistice Day, 11th November. While attending an American Legion Convention in 1920, Anna Guérin, a member of the French YWCA, saw the poppy not only as a global symbol of remembrance but also as a way of raising funds. She decided to start mass producing artificial poppies to sell as badges in France. The proceeds would be used to help war widows and orphans. After they proved a success in France, Anna took them abroad. In England, she met Field Marshall Douglas Haig, also the first president of the (Royal) British Legion founded in 1921 and the first British Legion Poppy Day Appeal took place in 1921 with nine million poppies sold and over £100,000 raised. The other allied countries soon followed suit. In 1922, Major John Howson opened the first UK

poppy factory in London. Howson had received the Military Cross during the First World War and had subsequently set up The Disabled Society to help provide employment for disabled veterans. His initial staff were five disabled exsoldiers. Today there are two poppy manufacturers in the UK – The Poppy Factory in Richmond (the original poppy factory relocated) and The Lady Haig Poppy Factory in Edinburgh. The Scottish poppy is slightly different to the English in that it has four petals instead of three and no leaf. Both are staffed by exservicemen and women and produce millions of poppies annually. The Poppy Factory also does free tours which are open to all. Along with the crosses and wreaths that will be placed on war memorials across the country on Remembrance Sunday this centenary year, armies of volunteers will sell millions of poppies in the run up to 11th November. The idea behind them remains the same – a nonreligious, non-cultural symbol of remembrance that helps to raise money for veterans and their families.

Britain’s Quirkiest Bonﬁre Night Celebrations

ovember is the month for firework displays, when adults and children gather together on a chilly field to spend half an hour ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ as fiery fountains erupt, Catherine wheels spin and rockets light up the night sky. It’s a fun family event, but our 21st century firework displays seem like pretty tame stuff when compared to the bonfire festivities enjoyed in times gone by. Fire festivals have been held for thousands of years but the practice of marking 5th November with bonfires and fireworks began as a rowdy celebration to mark the deaths of the conspirators who tried to blow up England’s parliament in 1605, with activities calculated to make any modern-day health and safety officer run for cover. While it’s no bad thing that firework displays are now controlled and regulated to avoid accidents, some of the devil-may-care spirit that was once the hallmark of November 5th seems to have been lost. However, there are certain parts of the UK where risk and excitement are an essential part of the enjoyment.

by Kate McLelland ANARCHIC FUN IN SUSSEX Welcome to Bonfire Night in Lewes, Sussex, where the smell of burnt gunpowder is always accompanied by a faint whiff of anarchy. It’s a night of celebration that promises activities that are – to quote the website lewesbonfirecelebrations.com – “not suitable for very young children … the frail or if you have breathing problems.” Each year this bonfire event turns the normally sleepy town of Lewes into a heady combination of raucous street bands, rowdy processions, heaving crowds and huge effigies – usually in the form of hated public figures of the day – made for the sole purpose of being consigned to the flames amidst cheers, jeers and catcalls. The town uses Bonfire Night as an opportunity to uphold the traditions of free speech and to remember the dead, particularly the seventeen Protestant martyrs who were burned at the stake in Lewes between 1555 and 1557 under the reign of ‘Bloody Mary’ (Queen Mary I) Their martyrdom is marked annually by a procession of 17 burning crosses.

TAR BARREL RACING IN DEVON Another place you might prefer to avoid on Bonfire Night if you are of a nervous disposition is Ottery St. Mary, in Devon. This tranquil West Country town changes character on the night of 5th November, becoming the stage for a perilous and fiery race through the streets. This exhilarating and risky spectacle involves setting light to huge wood and iron barrels soaked in tar. The barrels are then carried through the town at great speed. Some families have been taking part in the races for many generations and almost 10,000 people turn up each year to cheer them on. Another quirky and highspirited bonfire event is Shetland’s Viking fest Up Helly Aa, which takes place at the end of January. These celebrations – tapping into our primitive feelings about fire as something to be loved, feared and respected – are a powerful way of bringing communities together. Although no-one would want to return to the days when members of the public could be injured when activities got out of hand, it’s good to know that some UK communities are still prepared go to such lengths to let their hair down and celebrate together.
