ne of Ringwood’s most enjoyable events in its packed event calendar this year is its now biennial Pedal Car Grand Prix which is held on Sunday July 8th. Started in 1987, we now have an average of 7000 spectators throughout the day and the whole emphasis of the event is to have FUN! The pedal cars vary greatly in design with some ultra lightweight and very competitive, whilst others are built to amuse the crowds. There are driver changes, pit lanes where many of the cars are repaired during the race after the inevitable collisions with some limping round with a wheel still just about attached at a crazy angle or even on only 3 wheels! For lots of other ideas of things to do and places to go during June and July check out our What’s On pages 26 & 28.

Barnwells, 18-20 High Street, Ringwood.

he buildings in the May 2018 photograph are a 1960 approx modern reconstruction of Barnwell’s fruit and flower shop, remembered with affection by many older residents. Its chief distinction was that it was the only remaining thatched shop in the High Street, dating back possibly to the 17th century. During the 19th century the premises consisted of at least three separate dwellings, all occupied by families carrying out a variety of trades. Sometime in this period shop fronts were installed, the oldest being the one with the bow window on the end nearest Fridays Cross. This must have made an ideal display for the sweet shop run in this part of the building by Mrs Jane Mouland, the wife of a shoemaker. When the shop closed for the night, the outside of this bow window was covered with a wooden shutter. This was a common practice in Victorian Ringwood but this was the only such shutter to survive until 1980. In 1916 nurseryman and greengrocer Mr W H Barnwell took over from fruiter and dealer Frank White by which time all the shops had become one property, as

shown in the old photograph probably taken around 1960. After Mr Barnwell’s death, Mrs Barnwell carried on until her death in1970, when the business was continued by her son Arthur and his sister for about another ten years. They sold fruit, vegetables, seeds and flowers in their rather dark low-ceilinged shop. Following Arthur Barnwell’s retirement in about 1980, the shop was acquired by developers who caused so much instability to the building that it had to be completely demolished. Fortunately the NFDC planners insisted that the new building reflected the original design and so it was rebuilt complete with thatch. The only exception was the end shop which was slated as it had been in Victorian times. An archaeological survey undertaken at the time of the rebuild discovered a well in the middle of the site and pottery possibly dating to the late 17th century. Today the new building consists of four shops, currently The Pantry cafe, Roberts Jewellers, Anna bridal shop and Irving Palmer estate agency. .

Ringwood School hosts annual local school photography exhibition

n Tuesday 8th May 2018, Ringwood School once again opened its doors to host the annual Rotary Club of Ringwood Inter-school Photographic exhibition. Now in its sixth year, the competition has steadily grown to now include 12 local schools across the 3 counties of Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. The theme of this year’s competition was ‘A moment in time’ and over 1,000 entries were submitted. The Judging panel had the very difficult task of selecting just 36 final entries for each category to go through to the exhibition event at Ringwood School Conference Centre where the entries were proudly displayed. The sponsors for the event were Ringwood Surplus stores (Main sponsor), Ringwood Camera Club, Ellingham House Day

Camping on a budget While camping is one of the most wallet-friendly ways to holiday, the equipment doesn’t always come cheap. Try searching Ebay, Gumtree and Facebook for secondhand tents. You’ll often find people selling a full camping package, including tent, airbeds, gas stove and chairs. Do you have Tesco points to spend? You can pick up a 4-man tent from Tesco Direct for around £50. Rent a tent Love the idea of camping, but don’t have space for all the equipment, or just don’t fancy pitching a tent in the rain? Why not rent a tent? Your tent will be put up for you and you can even hire all the equipment to go with it. All you need to do is turn up, unpack and head to the beach. Search online for companies or ask your chosen campsite for recommendations. If you want a few more mod-cons, you could look into hiring a campervan or caravan. Try www.camperbug.co.uk for retro VW campervans. Where to go We really are spoilt for campsites in the UK. There

are literally hundreds to choose between, from tiny farm fields to entertainmentfilled holiday parks. The National Trust has lots of smaller, peaceful sites on offer, including in the Lake District, Cornwall and Snowdonia; see www.nationaltrust.org.uk. Camping festivals Kids entertainers, live music, food and drinks stands, craft tents … some festivals are fun for the whole family. Check out: Cornbury (13th – 15th July): The line-up for this year’s festival includes Alanis Morrisette, Amy Macdonald and Pixie Lott. The Oxfordshire festival also boasts a kids’ area, with discos, yoga, den building, circus skills, live shows and craft activities; see www.cornburyfestival.com. Farmer Phil’s Music Festival (10th – 12th August): With a week’s camping included in the £80 ticket price and tickets for under-12s priced at just £2, this is a great festival for families on a budget. Beautiful Days (17th – 19th August): With a huge children’s area, hands-on workshops, live entertainment, bushcraft, story-telling, a free shuttle bus to and from the local train station and a carfree camping field reserved for families, Beautiful Days is ideal for a weekend away; see www.beautifuldays.org. he natural world is in full swing during June and July and life at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve is abundant. Breeding birds on the site continue to fill the air with song as many will have mates producing a second brood. From the water’s edge to the woodland canopy, all over the reserve young birds will be fledging and gaining independence. Look out for the incredible stripy faces of Great Crested Grebe chicks on Ivy Lake and oystercatcher, lapwing and little ringed plover chicks on the shore of Ibsley Water. Keep your eyes to the ground mid-June for emerging toadlets – they are small, very well camouflaged and easily overlooked until one catches your eye and you realise you are surrounded. They dare not risk drying out so wait for a spell of wet weather when they emerge from the lakes en masse, covering the footpaths between the Centre and Ivy South Hide as well as other locations around the reserve.

On a sunny day the air is filled with insect life with Red Admiral, Peacock, Comma and Speckled Wood butterflies all plentiful and the summery sound of chirruping crickets and grasshoppers will delight your ears. Blashford is ideal for dragonflies and damselflies as our range of habitats suit their lifecycle. They spend their early life around the wetlands but move into the woodland and grassland areas to hunt as adults. Take a walk down to Ivy South hide and you are quite likely to spot a grass snake basking in the warm summer sun. On Thursday 21st June from 2pm until 4pm you can join the Reserves Officer on a guided ‘Mid-Summer Bugs’ walk in search of summer wildlife, including dragonflies, butterflies and moths. Alternatively for a family friendly ‘Catch the Bug’ experience you can join our Education Officer in the meadow to discover the fascinating miniature world of grasshoppers, crickets, spiders and bugs galore on

Saturday 23rd June, from 2pm until 4pm. For both events please book by telephoning 01425 472760. During the breeding season many birds will have been in especially attractive plumage but now start to moult. The lakes here at Blashford can become home to hundreds of Greylag and Canada Geese as they carry out their moult. Whilst they are replacing old feathers for new, they are vulnerable to predators like foxes, so they use the lakes to stay safe. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. GTi - the archetypical car for the ‘boys’ among us? Health

creening programmes are designed to identify health problems at an early stage, and the NHS offer many free screening programmes, beginning before we’re born. PREGNANCY AND POSTNATAL SCREENINGS If you’re pregnant, you will usually be offered a blood test for hepatitis B, HIV and syphilis before you’re 10 weeks pregnant. Early treatment reduces the risk of passing infection to your baby. You’ll also be offered screening for thalassaemia and sometimes sickle cell disease before 10 weeks, as it’s important to establish whether you’re a carrier. Screenings for your unborn baby: • 8-14 weeks: a ‘dating scan’. This ultrasound checks your baby’s development and will confirm your due date and if you’re expecting more than one baby. • 10-14 weeks: screening for Down’s syndrome, Patau’s syndrome and Edwards’ syndrome. This combines a blood test with an ultrasound scan and can be done alongside your dating scan. • 18-21 weeks: The ‘midpregnancy anomaly scan’, an ultrasound to check for physical abnormalities. Soon after birth, babies are given a physical examination and a blood spot ’heel prick’

test for several inherited diseases including cystic fibrosis, plus a hearing test before 3 months of age. SCREENING FOR TEENS AND ADULTS Diabetics aged 12 and over: the annual diabetic eye test checks for early signs of damage to blood vessels in the retina. Women aged 25-64: Cervical screening (a ‘smear test’) detects changes that can be an early sign of cancer. Women aged 25-49 are screened every three years; women aged 50-64, every five years. Over 40s: You may be invited for a general health check every five years. Women aged 50-70: Breast screening via a mammogram can detect early signs of breast cancer. Women over 70 can self-refer. Over 55s: In some areas, bowel scope screening to detect bowel cancer is offered. 60 to 74-year olds: Every two years, you’ll be sent a home testing kit called the faecal occult blood (FOB) test. This detects blood in your stool, which indicates further testing is required. Men at age 65: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening can detect dangerous swelling in the aorta. Men over 65 can selfrefer.

SCREENING COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE Although NHS screenings are offered to everyone eligible, it’s your choice whether to have them. Screenings and their results can cause anxiety and give rise to difficult decisions, especially where pregnancy screenings are concerned. There may be a small risk of false negatives and positives, and more tests may be required. However, remember that an hour or less spent at a screening could save your life (or that of a loved one). Diagnosing and treating conditions swiftly is the best way to reduce their impact and prevent them from becoming more severe. MORE INFORMATION While private health companies advertise additional screenings, some aren’t recommended by the UK National Screening Committee, as it isn’t clear that their benefits outweigh the harm they may cause. Inner and Outer Child It’s the image of the past that affects us the most. We all know of an adult who over reacts to situations, who can’t take any form of criticism, someone who feels like the victim, maybe sulks, becomes demanding or who cries when they don’t get their way. These behaviours may be obviously childlike and we are often shocked when we see them being displayed by an ‘adult’. The gradual accumulation of unfinished mental and emotional business can lead to chronic anxiety, fear, confusion, emptiness and unhappiness throughout all our life. Inside us all we still have the little child (the inner child) and the adolescent (the outer child) part of us reacting strongly to certain experiences and situations and the feelings we’re having in the present can be the feelings of this little child/adolescent from the past. The process of opening to the world of your inner child and getting to know where these feelings come from can change and enhance your choices and patterns of behaviour. The inner child is the emotional self, where our feelings live. When we experience joy, sadness, anger, fear or affection our child within is coming out. When we are being playful, spontaneous, creative, intuitive and curious we can experience our authentic self who we know to be deep within us. Besides the inner child we also have the adolescent child who can be responsible for us making unsuitable choices in our lives from eating one too many biscuits or drinking too much, to deciding to leave a relationship which is too loving or staying in an abusive relationship. The adolescent thinks he/ she is making choices that will keep the inner child from being hurt once again but in reality it makes situations worse than before.

Ringwood & Fordingbridge Blind Club celebrates 50 years

s Greyfriars Community Centre celebrates its Diamond anniversary, so Ringwood and Fordingbridge Club for the Blind are also celebrating their Golden anniversary and the two associations are inextricably linked by one man - Thomas H Lowndes. In 1958 he was one of the founding members of the Ringwood and District Community Association and also their first president. Once the community centre was established, Tom, visually impaired himself wanted to start a club to assist blind and partially-sighted people in Ringwood and surrounding areas. Initially a small club run in members’ homes, in 1968 it became affiliated to Hampshire Association for the Care of the Blind, now known as Open Sight. So Ringwood and Fordingbridge Club for the Blind was officially born with Tom Lowndes as Chairman. Early records for the club are sparse but it is thought that meetings were initially held at one of the local village halls, possibly Ibsley or Ellingham. The Youth Centre, later renamed Greyfriars Activity Centre, opened in 1975 and it seems, that at some point after this, Ringwood and

Fordingbridge Club for the Blind found a more permanent home at this venue where they still meet every fortnight. One of the main thrusts of the club is to give people a social outlet and this is a vital part of what the club does. During the 1990’s the Club became further involved in the local community by joining the Old People’s Welfare Group which represents most of the main charities in Ringwood. Tom Lowndes remained chairman for many years, eventually becoming president until he passed away. Some volunteers have been with the club for many years and were recognised at the New Forest volunteer award ceremony in 2012. In 2008 the Club became an independent charity and fundraising continues with occasional street collections and donations including a year long charity partnership with Sainsburys in 2013, plus a donation from the Waitrose in-store ‘Community Matters’ initiative. It is testament to the vision and legacy of Tom Lowndes that The Blind Club and Ringwood & District Community Association are still thriving and that is something well worth the celebrations.

t’s amazing to think that we were still getting snow back in March: just weeks later and it’s June, which even the UK usually manages to get through without any blizzards. Who knows, we might even get a long hot summer this time – and if we do, technology is happy to help. If you’re planning to party on the summer equinox, the longest day of the year, it’s worth getting some longlasting gadgets such as the UE Boom 2 portable speaker. It’s loud but not too loud, portable but not too small, and it’s waterproof

1 because it’s sold in Britain. At around £93 it’s pricier than many but is solid, sounds great and is well made – plus the battery lasts for 15 hours of tunes from a single charge. It’s a really great speaker for outdoor entertaining. If you’re barbecuing, technology can help. The superb Looftlighter (around £45 on eBay or £55 in the shops) can ensure charcoal lights instead of smokes, and a BBQ thermometer can make sure food is properly cooked. We love the Thermapen instant read thermometer (around £50) but for an even

more high-tech option there are Bluetooth-enabled meat thermometers that send readings to your smartphone so you don’t even need to lift

the lid. Weber’s excellent iGrill 3 (£89.99) is one of the best around, but there are more affordable options too. There’s a new entry in the outdoor lighting market: Philips, which has brought its Hue smart lighting system to gardens too. We love Hue for its ability to create all kinds of light “recipes” and effects and to do so from a phone or tablet, and you can now mix 16 million different colours outdoors too. The catch, inevitably, is cost: the wallmountable Lily spotlight is about £260 and the pedestal lamp around £125. It might be worth waiting for rivals to follow Philips’ lead: Hue-style indoor bulbs are widely available for a lot less than Philips chargers and we’d expect the same to happen with outdoor lighting too. Don’t try and cut corners with normal Hue bulbs in standard lamp fittings unless those fittings are large and properly waterproof. They might not work anyway: your home’s exterior walls may block the connection between the lights and the Hue hub,

which has to be connected to your internet router. Sadly, living in the UK means even a warm day doesn’t stay too warm for long, and many of us turn to outdoor heating. Don’t buy a heater that heats the air; it’s a waste of money, because most of the energy goes on heating the air nobody’s actually in. How We Fell in Love with Perfume by Catherine Rose

he word perfume is derived from the Latin per fumum, meaning ‘through smoke’. This is possibly because the perfumes of ancient civilisations were often incense-based. Today, true perfumes are a distillation of a certain percentage of oils in alcohol, with eau de toilette and eau de cologne being diluted versions. Although the Romans were well-known to be very fastidious in their toilet habits, perfume very much pre-dates them.

History

Used significantly across Asian cultures, it is believed perfume may have originated in Arabia – still sometimes described as ‘the land of perfumes’. The perfume formulas of a female Mesopotamian chemist known as Tapputi-Bellatekalim have been translated from a threethousand-year-old tablet written in ancient cuneiform script. In the ancient world, perfumes were much more than just pleasant smells – they were also revered. The Bible refers to a sacred perfume, only allowed to be used by priests, that was made from myrrh, cinnamon, cassia and sweet cane, and the ancient Egyptians believed perfume

was ‘the sweat of the gods’. Ancient Hindu Ayurvedic texts dating back to 3000 BC refer to perfume’s distillation. In India, a variety of fragrances were used in tantric rituals where women would be spiritually anointed with different oils for every part of their body. In 2004, the oldest evidence of perfume was discovered with the remains of a Bronze Age perfume ‘factory’ unearthed in Cyprus. It is thought that 13th century Crusaders brought back perfume from Palestine, and its use was eagerly taken up by Europe’s nobility. The Sun King Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643-1715, loved perfume so much that his palace became known as ‘the perfume court’. One of his favourite perfumes, used to fragrance his shirts, was called Aqua Angeli (‘water of angels’) and consisted of, amongst other ingredients, nutmeg, cloves, jasmine, orange flowers, musk and aloe wood, all boiled in rose petal water. During this time, France became a force in Europe for the manufacture and supply of fine perfumes, and Grasse in southern France, renowned for

its natural variety of flowers, was a leading supplier. In England, where sanitation was also abysmal and disease rife, perfumes were not only worn; they were also kept inside jewellery and the heads of canes to be inhaled by the wearer for health-giving properties and to ward off illness. As well as essential oils from flowers and plants, ingredients for perfume were also derived from animal excretions. Castor was extracted from beavers, musk from male deer and ambergris from the sperm whale. In the 1800s, synthetic fragrances made an appearance, their less expensive ingredients allowing for the first mass marketing of perfumes, thus launching famous companies that are still around today such as Coty and Guerlain. Then in 1921, Chanel created her signature scent, Chanel No. 5, with the help of Grasse parfumier Ernest Beaux who had made perfumes for the Russian royal family. Under her direction, he gave her numbered samples to choose from – the rest is history. Today our love of perfume remains undiminished and fragrances are popular with both men and women. But one thing hasn’t changed in that, even used daily, perfume is still viewed as a gloriously indulgent and luxury item – pure olfactory pleasure in a bottle.
