Dear Readers,

ust when you thought it was safe to go out into the garden...the minibeast arrives plunging us back into arctic conditions and dumping another 3 inches of snow! Although the snow is a different kind this time so hopefully it will be short lived and by the time you read this it will be long gone! Page 18 gives you lots of tips and advice to help you get your lawn back to that bowling green look after the winter - well - a healthy, green, moss and weedfree lawn is what most of us aspire to at least! My husband scarified ours to within an inch of its life just before the early March snow and despite it initially looking half dead, was definitely showing signs of recovery. Helped along by the lawn treatment chaps of course so

with best wishes,

all is not lost! Hopefully in the not too distant future we will be able to get our bikes out of hibernation and get back into our lovely countryside. Page 10 is for all the Jason and Laura Kenny’s out there with young children! Lots of ideas to get out and about with your youngsters in tow and Moors Valley Country Park is just the place to start! Of course if you are anything like my husband who tends to fall off his bike more than he should, you might be wise to invest in some private health insurance - see Finance article on page 40! Finally if you are in the mood for a bit of house maintenance or refurbishment this spring then don’t forget to look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 46.

ROUNDABOUT

ROUNDABOUT VERWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE

PAST and PRESENT

Ringwood Road, Verwood, looking east.

T

he main thoroughfare from Ringwood to Cranborne was still unsurfaced when these three brand new, matching family homes were built on the south side of the road in the early twentieth century. The children, no doubt curious about the photographer, add a period touch to the scene. The site of the Bethel Chapel (which was featured in October 2017 issue), built in 1931, is next to the gate in the bottom

right of the old picture. The brick house beyond, now replaced by a modern dwelling, contained “Henry’s Stores” on the corner of Newtown Road. The large tree in the old photo is presumably the same much larger tree still standing in the front garden today. Although the house is now almost hidden by decades of foliage growth the gable end is still visible complete with its course of decorative red bricks when viewed from the same location. An eventful year as Moors Valley celebrates its 30th Birthday

M

oors Valley Country Park and Forest is celebrating its 30th birthday this year and with new family attractions and some very special events there has never been a better time to visit.

The New Hawkhouse The park, which recently won a prestigious Gold award at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards, has something to offer all ages. It offers safe, adventurous play for children and is perfect for a family day out with its year-round events programme but with 1000 acres of forest to explore there’s always something new to discover for adults as well.

saddle bag, which includes a Highway Rat mask and activities to enjoy along the route. Standing proud on the play trail, the stunning new Hawkhouse is huge, reaching over five metres into the sky, with wings extending to over 18 metres wide. Created by Hampshire artist Andy Frost and his team, Hawkhouse was inspired by the Harris hawks flown at Moors Valley. The play sculpture really captures the imagination making a dramatic addition to the two-mile play trail. Also new to the park are some new friends to join the giant sculptures of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child in the deep dark wood. Loved by children across the world, sculptures of mouse, fox, owl, snake and squirrel have been crafted to match Alex Scheffler’s wonderful drawings, completing Julia Donaldson’s magical story of The Gruffalo and providing wonderful opportunities for imaginative outdoor play.

The 30th anniversary celebrations have started in style with the opening of two new attractions. The Highway Rat Activity Trail is inspired by author and illustrator duo Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s children’s story which was premiered on the BBC last Christmas. Brought to life in the Moors Valley forest setting thanks to a partnership between the Forestry Commission and Magic Light Pictures, visitors to the woodland trail follow in the footsteps of the mischievous rodent intent on swiping the sweet treats of every forest creature he meets. The family fun can be extended by buying a £3 highway

B

The Gruffalo More events at Moors Valley will be announced later in the year adding to the park’s full range of fun seasonal family events, exhibition programme and adult activities. Full details and booking instructions can be found at: www.moors-valley.co.uk

On Your Bike by Kate Duggan

L

earning to ride a bike opens up a whole new world of fun and independence for children. Even babies and toddlers can join in the fun of a family bike ride, with a little help… BABIES can start joining you on bike rides from around nine months old, as long as they can hold their head up unsupported. You’ll need to choose between a trailer and a front or rear bike seat.

Parenting

CHILD BIKE SEATS start from around £30. The more expensive ones usually have extra features, such as a fivepoint safety harness, rather than a three-point one. Some have backs that can be tilted for on-the-go naps. FRONT-MOUNTED SEATS sit in front of you and attach to the frame. They sometimes have a shorter back than rear mounted seats, and usually have a lower maximum weight allowance, so they won’t last you quite as long. On the plus side, you’ll be able to see your child, which makes sharing a ride more fun. Some REAR SEATS fit to a pannier rack, while others fit to the frame. You might find

balancing is a little bit easier with a rear seat compared to a front one, and it should last you until your child is around four years old. Whichever type of seat you go for, you’ll need to check that it’s suitable for your bike and the weight of your child. Look for a seat with plenty of padding, a good safety harness and adjustable foot supports. BIKE TRAILERS are more expensive than seats, but you can pull older children, and often two at a time (plus picnics or shopping). Trailers usually have a cover, so your child will stay dry if you get caught in the rain, even if you get soaked. You might struggle with a trailer on steep hills though, and you’ll need a garage or shed to store it when it’s not in use. It’s a good idea to visit your local bike shop to speak to a specialist adviser before you make any decisions. They’ll be able to recommend a trailer or bike seat that’s right for you, your bike and your child. CyCLINg wITH yOUNg CHILDREN Once your child is old enough to ride a 16” bike, you might

want to progress from a seat or trailer to a Trail Gator or other tow bar. These attach your bike to your child’s, so you can pull your child behind you. They’re handy for when you fancy a longer ride than your child could otherwise manage. Some tow bars can be unclipped and folded down, if your child wants to ride on their own for a while. Your child’s bike might feel a bit wobbly when it’s being pulled, so tow bars aren’t suitable for children under around four. wHERE TO gO Lots of roads have designated cycle lanes now, and there are plenty of traffic-free routes to explore too. The National Cycle Network offers 14,000 miles of bike-friendly roads and paths. Visit www.sustrans. org.uk for free printable cycle route maps. Fancy joining other families for a bike ride? www.cyclinguk. org lists hundreds of UK cycling events, including ones that are suitable for families. It’s also worth asking what your local bike club has to offer, as lots of cycling clubs organise volunteer-led rides for beginners and families.

pring has definitely arrived now with the dawn chorus of birdsong and the buzzing of insect wings filling the air. Listen out as birds like chiffchaff and goldcrest use their song to stake their claim to their feeding territories. The birds on the reserve are busily mating, building nests and rearing their young. Last year visitors were treated to a mother lapwing and her chicks patrolling up and down in front of Tern hide. The swallows, swifts and martins have returned from their winter holiday in far off South Africa and are treating visitors to impressive flying displays as they greedily gobble up the insects above the lakes. It is amazing to think that the swallows zig-zagging over Blashford Lakes have travelled over two thousand miles, covering two hundred miles a day and reaching speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. No wonder they are so hungry! It is not just the birds celebrating spring on the reserve, take a walk along Dockens

Complete your visit by having a quiet sit down behind the education centre watching newly emerged dragonflies and damselflies as they zoom around in the spring sunshine. The warmer weather is bringing out an abundance of insect life with an ever growing list of colourful butterflies and shiny beetles. All you need then is to hear the easily recognisable call of the cuckoo echoing round and you will know that spring, with all its promise, colour and life is definitely here. All this makes Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve a wonderful place to enjoy all that spring has to offer and to nourish the senses. We know that a strong connection with nature has countless benefits for people’s health and wellbeing, which is why we began Natural Wellbeing sessions here on the reserve last year. The sessions run every Friday from 11am until 2.30pm and use the natural environment

to promote adult health and wellbeing, so are particularly beneficial for people who are suffering with mental health conditions. Participants are able to get involved with cooking lunch outside, wildlife watching, craft activities or they can just enjoy the peace and tranquility of the woodland with the company of others. If you would like to join us or know someone who may be interested, please get in touch on 01425 472760 or BlashfordLakes@hiwwt.org.uk. an interior with sympathetic Tango detailing, excellent seats front and rear, technology oozing out of every cranny and dial - all really in your face -and surprise, lots of space including the boot and all within a relatively short car. This amalgam will please the kids, the 20-somethings who still have a lot of growing up to do, yet being a total anathema to Mrs Bucket. So, a kooky-looking on-trend car which you can even customise to the last detail - a different coloured roof, roof rails, body sides, interior.... bored yet? The piece-de-resistance for me was the optional £950 glass sunroof which also tilts and slides open to the elements, thus speeding the onset of hypothermia. Yes, it is that good. This fashion statement also has wheels and I used them. Despite the small engine, big wheels and a large frontal area to push through the air it nips along quite nicely, goes round corners very well and true to the French tradition has a nice smooth ride which was the biggest surprise of all. Equipped with all-weather tyres but not ‘Grip Control’,

road-holding and handling in our winter was pretty good and ultimately it was always the driver who chickened out. I was very disappointed to find that despite the off-road pretentions this car gave, it did not include this superbly clever ‘Grip Control’ which is an option available only at an extra cost of £400. I would certainly tick this option box it’s that good to enable a mere 2-wheel-driver to have about 90% of the get-out-of-slimeability of the average 4-wheel driver. This option gives great confidence and is more than adequate for your weekend overflow car parking lake but perhaps not Glastonbury? And our diesel consumption on test was a shade under 60mpg - incredibly miserly! This car is relatively inexpensive, ranging from £14k to £19k before adding options. As small quasi-SUV’s have become very ‘hot’ on the used car market, depreciation has to be set fair. This slashes away at cost of ownership as I don’t predict the SUV fashion going away any time soon. Unless finger-fidgets get a revival. I really enjoyed my time with this car but I don’t see such a flashy statement as regular transport. I’d rather slither along in something low and fast but inconspicuously anonymous. What a Luddite.

Mike's Motors

H

ave you noticed the fashion for pumpedup, chunky and possibly intimidating cars looking rather like pukka SUV’s (sports utility vehicles) - or in normal slang, Land Rovers? These are popping up everywhere and come in all sizes. Due mainly to their vertically accentuated stance, they offer both a relatively large passenger space and a commanding view over ‘normal’ saloon cars - but it is increasingly likely the several SUV’s in front of you are even taller than you! The chunky design suggests they have allwheel-drive, but this is seldom the case. Such is fashion. Todays’ fashion accessory is the new Citroen C3 Aircross, in my case with the sporty and ultra-clean 1.5 litre diesel engine and in the top ‘Flair’ specification. My car was finished mainly in Tango orange giving a very aggressive looking Tango bonnet with contrast detailing. And

Give Your Lawn an Overhaul by Pippa Greenwood

I

Gardening

t has rained so much in recent months that my lawn has taken a battering, though the flower and vegetable beds are starting to pick up. Over-wet conditions can cause roots to die off and will reduce the oxygen in the soil. Worse still, any areas of the lawn you’ve walked on or moved a wheelbarrow over will have become compacted or squashed. Thus, the air spaces in the soil are dramatically reduced, and the heavier your soil is, the worse the problem is likely to be. So for green grass that’s ready for summer, it’s time to get to work. Check over your lawn mower and see to anything that needs sorting. If necessary, take it to a reputable outlet for a service as soon as possible. If your grass needs cutting, make sure you don’t set the blades too low for the first few cuts, as this weakens growth and makes weed invasion more likely. After mowing, you can relieve some of the soil compaction

to allow air down to the roots, making for better growth and healthier grass. If only small areas are compacted, drive a garden fork into the lawn every 4-6 inches or so, getting the fork tines to a depth of 4-6 inches, then gently ease the handle of the fork back and forth to enlarge each drainage hole. Next, mix some sieved garden soil or loam with horticultural sand (about one part soil/loam to nine parts sand) and brush across the lawn and into the holes you’ve made. The result is a drainage system over those compacted areas. If the soil in the garden is quite heavy or contains a lot of clay, the whole lawn will benefit from aerating. I recommend you buy, borrow or hire a ‘hollow-time aerator’, either as a hand operated one, a machine or a mower attachment. This cuts cylinders of soil from your lawn and when filled with the ‘top-dressing’ mix above will result in longer-lasting drainage channels. Any moss should be removed,

so apply moss killer and then rake it all out after the time specified on the pack. The lawn will look worse initially, but it allows more air to the roots of the grass plants and gives them more space to grow and spread too. Lawns that have suffered from waterlogging benefit from a suitable feeding regime. Whether you choose a granular or liquid feed, make sure that it is a spring lawn food formulated to give the balance of nutrients lawns need now. Granular feeds must be watered in unless it rains shortly after application. Walking on a very wet lawn soon wears it out and kills off grasses. To repair bald or thin patches, roughen up the areas using a rake and then sprinkle a suitable seed mix on to match the existing grasses. If you’ve not got many patches to sow, you can buy small patch repair packs. Once all the work is done, keep off your lawn for a few weeks to allow it to take advantage of all that TLC and grow away really well.

Don’t Put The Blame On Me!

By Christina Smith

‘Don’t Put The Blame On Me!’ Is a very poignant song from the singer the Rag’n’ Bone Man, as we all have encountered being blamed and shamed within our relationships. For some people blaming and shaming others, especially our partners can become a habit. It has the power to destroy an intimate relationship. Blaming your partner or indeed yourself can become an addiction, something you unconsciously feel you have to do in order to make things feel right for you at that time. Unfortunately, like many addictions, it is something that slowly destroys your own self-esteem and the loving energy from your relationships. Sometimes we don’t even know we are blaming and shaming. We rush to ‘be right’ about a situation and feel that by berating our partner we are in effect balancing the scales of an imbalanced relationship where one partner is perceived to have more power than the other. By pointing out our partners mistakes we may believe we are going to be able to ‘fix’ or ‘change’ them. However, often the opposite is true, we actually create more distance in the relationship, more barriers and ultimately pain for ourselves. When you blame your partner you are not focusing on yourself and how you are really feeling. Blame and anger are intrinsically linked and often we don’t stop to understand what we are really angry about. By automatically blaming someone without taking responsibility for your part in the situation you create a very effective ‘cop-out’. You do not have to speak the real truth about how you are feeling. It is possible that behind your blaming and shaming behaviour are the feelings of rejection, fear of being taken for granted, not being loved enough or not ever being loved in the way you really deserve. If all your energy is spent on ‘being right’ and complaining about the other

Verwood Choral Society celebrates 30 years

erwood Choral Society is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. It is particularly remarkable because the founder of the society, Mrs Ann Mayo, is STILL the Musical Director. Ann conducts the choir at rehearsals every week with the same humour and enthusiasm with which she has guided it’s path for the past 30 years. The Choral Society hold two concerts every year, each and every one raising money for mainly local charities. During their 30 years, approximately £20,000 has been raised, of

which just over half has been in the last ten years. A truly remarkable sum of money. The 30th anniversary concert will be held on 9th June 2018 at the Verwood Methodist Church. Currently the music is being rehearsed and features some of the music which has been sung at previous concerts from the last 30 years. The choir currently has membership of around 40 and new members are always welcomed. For more info. contact Sue at: Sumlon@hotmail.co.uk or 01202 829212.

Crane Valley Seniors end on a high!

eniors at Crane Valley ended the golf club’s 25th year on a high. Outgoing captain, Roger Bonfield, said: ‘The year saw the greatest ever support for a very full range of competitions and events staged against the backdrop of a still on-going and exciting programme of course improvements and refinements.’ On donning the incoming captain’s blazer

for the year ahead, Eddie Gray, promised no let-up in the continuing development of the seniors’ section. He also announced that as a fellow club member had recently been diagnosed with the disease, it seemed fitting that the charity for his year would be the Motor Neurone Society, with an emphasis on support for sufferers in and around East Dorset.

hey are beautiful, natural, healthy, and get better with age – wooden floors are ideal almost everywhere.

Home & Interiors

SAND BACK OLD BOARDS The simplest and cheapest option is often simply to sand back the existing boards. Not every floor is worth sanding – if there are too many nails to be removed, or the floor has woodworm, is uneven, or is of poor quality, replacing it may be better. Before sanding, mend or replace any damaged boards, preferably with matching second hand boards (new boards should be stained later to match), and hammer down protruding nail heads. USING RECLAIMED BOARDS The aged patina of reclaimed boards is beautiful, but they are not much cheaper than new boards, while common problems include woodworm, ingrained dirt and stains, damage, variations in thickness or colour, and the presence of old nails. Ask where the wood came from and how it has been stored – timber that has stood outside may be useless or would need to dry out considerably before reuse. Pine is cheaper than oak, and narrower boards are cheaper than wider ones. FITTING A NEW TIMBER FLOOR New timber floors can be fitted anywhere in the house,

on solid or suspended floors, though they’re not advised for bathrooms or other wet areas as wood expands and contracts with humidity. You can fit a timber floor with underfloor heating, though timber does not give quite as high a heat output as concrete. When retro-fitting, it may be possible to lay new boards over old ones – but only if they are even, and usually covered with 18-20mm

of ply as a base. Remember that your floor level will be raised and ensure you avoid any pipes and wires that run beneath the existing floor when fitting. TYPES OF TIMBER The main choice you’ll be faced with is between solid wood, engineered wood and laminate.

Wooden Flooring By Katherine Sorrell Solid wood is entirely natural and can be sanded again and again. It’s available as boards, strips, blocks and parquet. Engineered wood (sometimes called multi-layer or laminated) is made from layers of solid timber or a veneer of solid timber on top of MDF, plywood, chipboard or softwood, with a balancing veneer beneath. A top layer of at least 5mm allows for limited sanding if necessary. Laminates generally comprise a resin-impregnated decorative paper surface layer (with photographs of real wood) bonded to a thin MDF or chipboard core. Cheap versions are not awfully durable, but more expensive versions are tough and have long guarantees. Timber floors are given ‘grades’ describing their appearance. They vary but are often called ‘select’, ‘natural’ and ‘rustic’ or ‘country’. ‘Rustic’ grades are the cheapest and ‘select’ the most expensive. FINISHES FOR FLOORBOARDS PAINT: a great cover-up, available in a range of colours. STAINS: may be oil or water-based. May still need a finish for protection. WAX: gives a lovely sheen and smell, but requires regular re-waxing. OIL: gives a natural finish and protect the woods, but again needs re-applying regularly. • UV-CURED OIL AND WAX: almost like lacquer, but with the look of oil or wax. • LACQUER AND VARNISH: available in hard-wearing matt, satin and gloss finishes, but don’t give such a natural finish. • • • •

Be Happy With a Book Whether you love curling up with a psychological thriller or prefer biographies, enjoy flicking through a cookbook or need business advice, we’ve got just the book to keep you and your e-reader happy.

Book Reviews

How Not To Be a Boy – Robert Webb Actor and comedian Robert Webb has turned his hand to writing, with great success. How Not To Be a Boy is part biography, part reflection on the expectations that are put on boys and men to act a certain way. Webb reveals his grief at losing his mother and his difficult relationship with his father, and ruminates on how trying to ‘act like a man’ has had a negative effect on his life. Through it all, Webb writes with his trademark humour, taking the reader from laughing out loud to blinking back tears in moments. The History of Bees – Maja Lunde The History of Bees tells the stories of three people, all connected by bees. In 1851, William is attempting to build a revolutionary beehive to bring honour and fame to his family. In 2007, George is struggling to keep the family bee farm going. Almost 100 years later, Tao is enjoying a rare day off from her job handpollinating fruit trees, when her son is taken seriously ill. The History of Bees was a surprise international bestseller last year and is ideal for fans of dystopian fiction.

Anything You Do Say – Gillian McAllister A split second decision has lasting implications for the protagonist in this tense psychological thriller. Late at night, believing that she’s being followed, Joanna lashes out, pushing her pursuer down a set of concrete steps. Does she call an ambulance, or walk away? Both scenarios are then explored. Ingenious, original and fast-paced, this is perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Girl on a Train. The Paying Guests – Sarah Waters It’s 1922, but the roaring twenties have yet to reach the quiet corner of London where Frances and her mother live. Frances has resigned herself to a life spent looking after the family home, but the arrival of lodgers Lilian and Leonard Barber reawakens her life, energy and passions. Paying Guests was published in 2014 and was named ‘Fiction Book of the Year’ by The Sunday Times, for good reason. A modern classic, it’s beautifully written, with believably flawed characters, plot twists and a building tension that’ll keep you reading ‘just one more chapter’ until late into the night.

Ultimate Fit Food – Gordon Ramsay Planning to get a bit fitter before the summer? Gordon Ramsey’s latest book might help. It’s split into three sections, each of which offers a range of dishes to promote general wellbeing, achieve weight loss or provide fuel for workouts. There are recipes for everything from healthy snacks and breakfasts to impressive main courses, and plenty of treats are included too. The emphasis is on dishes so delicious you’ll almost forget they’re good for you. Start Me Up – Various If you’re thinking of setting up your own business, take advice and inspiration from people who’ve done just that. Enterprise Nation is a website for small businesses and has recently released a free ebook. Start Me Up features stories from 100 entrepreneurs, including the owner of Cool Cold Brew, which will soon be available in Sainsbury’s, and the founder of the fastest growing baby food brand in the UK. You can download Start Me Up from the blog at www. enterprisenation.com.

Is It Worthwhile Taking Out Private Health Insurance?

Finance

P

rivate health insurance generally covers the cost of private consultations, treatments, and immediate aftercare as an inpatient. Some policies also pay for outpatient care, such as physiotherapy. Employers sometimes offer this type of insurance as a benefit to their employees, but if you’re thinking of taking out your own policy, how do you know if it’s going to be worthwhile? Before we look at the benefits and potential drawbacks of private medical insurance, here’s a little more detail on the cover that could be included. What might a health insurance policy cover? The benefits provided by private health insurance vary according to the monthly premiums, with comprehensive policies offering the greatest level of cover. Here’s a general outline of the main benefits: • Private consultations • Anaesthesia • Inpatient stays for investigative tests, surgery, or immediate post-treatment care • Treatments and procedures as a day patient • Outpatient treatments and aftercare - physiotherapy or hydrotherapy, for example hoW does private health insurance Work? Private medical insurance is designed to work alongside NHS services, so your GP would need to refer you for a private consultation. Policies are renewed annually, with monetary excesses applying

By Ann Haldon in the same way as with other forms of insurance. The insurer sets a limit on the amount of cover available to you annually. They define the benefits, plus any exclusions that apply - a pre-existing illness, for example - in the policy document. Why might you decide to take out private health insurance? • You need fast access to a consultation, investigative procedure, or treatment • Treatment isn’t available on the NHS • You’re employed, but don’t receive private health insurance as a benefit • You’d like to see a particular consultant, or require a specialist referral • You want the comfort of staying in a private room • You don’t want to wait for physiotherapy after surgery What are the potential draWbacks of private medical insurance? • Policies are costly, with premiums increasing every year • Some health conditions are excluded, so a private healthcare policy may not cover all your medical needs • You have to pay an excess each year • You may have ethical concerns about private health care • The insurer sets limits on the amount of cover available for each condition, each type of treatment, and an overall amount in the policy year

hoW much Will private health insurance cost? Various factors are taken into account by insurers when setting the price of private healthcare premiums - these include (but are not limited to): • Age • Existing health • Medical history as an individual, and of your family • Lifestyle • Types of cover required It’s advisable to shop around before buying private health insurance - comparison websites are a good way to find out about the cost of various policies. alternatives to private health insurance There are alternative ways to fund private medical treatment without taking out an insurance policy. If you have residual income or existing savings, for example, you could set aside a sum to cover a proportion of future treatments. Paying only for the initial consultation is also an option if you require an urgent medical opinion. The consultant would then refer you back to the NHS for treatment, if necessary. Healthcare cash plans also exist that help you cover your medical costs. In this case you’re refunded the costs that you pay up front, up to preagreed limits. www.money.co.uk/healthinsurance/how-does-healthinsurance-work.htm www.moneyadviceservice.org. uk/en/articles/do-you-needprivate-medical-insurance#whatdoes-it-cover
