Dear Readers,
elaxation for us is mainly walking and cycling and recently whilst on one of our regular bicycle trips around the New Forest we spotted what was obviously a red kite. Our cover photo was taken by local photographer Andrew Wiltshire in the Chalke Valley a few miles north of The Forest. Red kites were almost extinct from the British Isles but after careful conservation in Wales and re-introduction notably in the Thames Valley where they are a common sight (almost too common some say!), they are now beginning to become established in parts of Hampshire and can be seen on occasion in Dorset. Instantly recognisable, even for amateur bird enthusiasts like us from their red kite shaped tail and with a majestic wingspan of a couple

of inches short of six foot. So keep your eyes peeled! Summer relaxation seems to be the theme running through this issue too! Page 8 tells us how to achieve a soothing and calm garden to relax in and on page 42 you’ll find reviews of a few beach reads to relax with whilst on holiday soaking up the sun! Suggestions of how to relax and recover from ‘jet lag’ and more importantly ‘joy lag’ are on page 26, although some of you out there (my husband being one!) aren’t great fans of holidays so joy lag isn’t something you need to recover from! Finally if you want to relax with the children during the summer holidays then check out our What’s On pages 30 & 32 for many local events where they can safely get rid of all that surplus energy!

PAST and PRESENT Verwood Station after closure
1965
T
he change which brought most sadness to the people of Verwood was the closure of the railway line under the Beeching axe. Passenger services ended in 1964 and goods the following year. The station had long been a focal point and the train used for shopping in Poole, mothers travelling with baby’s pram in the Guard’s van, trips to London, commercial usages and older children going to Grammar School, the boys to the Old Queen Elizabeth’s at Wimborne and the girls to Parkstone, others to private schools and as weekly boarders to Weymouth Technical College. One of the boys who used to make the journey was Lionel Jeffries, the famous actor and
director, whose father ran the Central garage opposite the Recreation Ground. The picture above shows the station looking pretty forlorn not long after its closure with the rails having been removed with almost indecent haste! Today the photographer of the old picture would probably find himself in someone’s back garden and apart from the angle of the Albion (and the railway bridge just out of the picture on the right) it is hard to believe that the railway was ever at this location. W
hen you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. So, concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes. Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax? Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’. If you have an arch, arbour, pergola or even a spare bit of fence then train a honeysuckle over it. Its delicately coloured flowers and fabulous perfume will cheer you up and you can even enjoy it in the early evening. A sowing of night-scented stock will produce plants that
are perfect for early evening relaxation, as this is when the flowers open and produce wafts of really sweet scent. If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume. Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium which grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke. Artemisia abrotanum has soft grey-green leaves that will make you want to touch it, which releases a lovely aroma. The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so grow this in a sunny spot with free-draining soil, perhaps to edge a border. It not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell.
Grasses and bamboos work well too; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently is one of the most relaxing sounds I know, and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form wonderfully rounded and quite irresistible clumps of foliage. When it comes to choosing flowers, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. Green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so include plenty of plants with good foliage, and, in shady areas, a miniature grotto-like patch planted up with ferns is wonderful. And finally, before you rush off to the garden centre to buy some of these truly magical ingredients, just a reminder that water in a garden always helps to relax you. Whether it’s a small pond or perhaps a bubble fountain, position it where you can hear that sound of moving water or enjoy watching the wildlife as it comes to feed and drink and before you know it, you will find that you want to move the whole of your life into your garden.

Local Football Clubs raise funds for Julia’s House
T
hree football clubs based in Verwood recently teamed together to raise £1,000 by agreeing a weekend where all match fees were donated to Julia’s House. The weekend held in March saw matches played by local youngsters from Rossgarth YFC, Verwood Town Girls FC and adults from Verwood Town FC. The match fees collected from numerous matches, which would normally be used to fund the pitch hire and referee appointments, were collected and added together with any donations given on the side-lines at all matches. Collectively the clubs managed to raise £900. The committee of Rossgarth YFC then agreed to top up the fund-raising effort to a grand total of £1,000. The cheque was recently presented to Alicia Poulson, Julia’s House Community Fundraiser, by Glenn Gosden, Rossgarth Committee Member, at the Rossgarth end of season presentation day. Alicia said: ” Thank you to everyone at Rossgarth YFC and Verwood Town FC for raising an incredible amount of money for Julia’s House; their help means so much to us. We rely heavily on fundraising and donations to enable us to run our vital service and this money really will make a huge difference.” Rossgarth YFC and Verwood Town FC Chairman, Martin Gilham, said: “Over the last 4
years we have been aiming on giving back to our local community. Recently we have funded football kits for local schools, donated to charity events and part funded soccer schools run through our linked club status with AFC Bournemouth Community Trust. This time one of our committee members, Daron Golding, suggested we give back to the community in a different way and nominated Julia’s House for the fantastic work they carry out locally. We couldn’t agree more and wouldn’t have thought of a better cause to support on our charity weekend.” Julia’s House provides practical and emotional support for families caring for a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. This frequent and regular support can be provided in their own homes, in the community or at one of the Julia’s House hospices. Rossgarth Youth Football Club is a volunteer run FA Charter Standard club based in Verwood, whose aim is to provide the opportunity for boys and girls of all abilities to enjoy football, from ages 5 to 18. The support of the local community and local businesses help to keep over 300 children, from Verwood and the surrounding areas, playing regular football. Rossgarth also has strong links to Wessex Premier League side Verwood Town Football Club, Verwood Town Girls FC and Verwood Town Ladies FC.

Verwood Solar Farm Committee awards
he Verwood Solar Farm Committee were very pleased that their award of £3,000 to Hillside Pre-School in the spring enabled a shelter to be erected in time for the recent heatwave and also provides a covered area for wet days. At the same time, Relate have received a grant of £5,000 to enable their service to be set up in Verwood. Funds can only be awarded for projects
in Verwood itself as there is also a Solar Farm Fund for Three Legged Cross which is part of the same parish. For more information on how to obtain grants, look at the Verwood Solar Farm information on the Town Council website. The Committee is next due to meet on Monday 16th October and applications, preferably by email, need to be in by the end of September.

erwood U3a your local “University of the Third Age” is holding an Open Day on Wednesday 16th August from 10am until 1pm at Verwood Memorial Hall to invite more people of retirement age to enjoy the benefits of membership. U3a is inspired by the belief that to enjoy a healthy retirement we need to keep active, develop new interests and get out and meet people. We are run by “members for members“. Volunteers share their interests, skills and enthusiasms by leading or attending interest groups which meet weekly, fortnightly or monthly between September and June. Verwood has about 250 members and nearly
30 interest groups and for a one off annual subscription of £38 you are entitled to join any number you like. We have several groups each for art, crafts, history, bridge, languages and discussion as well as reading, gardening, guitar jamming, bird watching, fishing, badminton and table tennis. s August arrives, the trees at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve are laden with leaves. As the grass in the meadow begins to die back, some flowers including heather, fleabane and hemp agrimony are only just beginning to come out whilst blackberries and other berries will be ripening – there will be plenty of food around for our insects, birds and mammals. On a sunny day take time to search for butterflies including brimstone, peacock, red admiral, small white, large white, green-veined white, silverwashed fritillary, painted lady, gatekeeper, small tortoiseshell and comma. Dragonflies will also be out patrolling their feeding grounds including southern and migrant hawkers. On Monday 7th August join Reserves Officer Bob Chapman on a guided walk from 2pm until 4pm in search of summer invertebrates. To book your place telephone 01425 472760. As summer continues it’s

time to look to the skies over Blashford in search of passing migrants. Birds like osprey will be making their way back to Africa whilst our hirundines will be gathering to feed over Ibsley Water before they too head south. A good time to look for this feeding frenzy of swallows, swifts and martins is just after rain, which seems to bring the insects down over the water with the birds not far behind. As some birds leave others are starting to arrive. The great white egret is likely to return any day now from its holidays in France to spend the autumn and winter with us. Duck numbers are also starting to build up with representatives of several species including gadwall, tufted duck, wigeon, mallard and shoveler out on the water. As usual at this time of year it can be quite difficult to sort many of them out as the usually distinctive drakes have moulted into a somewhat drab ‘eclipse’ plumage, similar to the females. This is thought to be a survival mechanism, making them less conspicuous
whilst they moult their flight feathers and are unprotected from predators. Late summer is a great time to be keeping a watchful eye out for this year’s fledglings. Kingfisher in particular will be starting to disperse themselves throughout the reserve, giving you the best chance of seeing one; either a flash of bright blue or if you are lucky enough they may choose to settle on one of the many perches outside the front of Goosander or the Ivy Lake hides. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. Ginger - part 1
id he fall or was this a risky jump for freedom? It was a long way down from the window of a first floor flat where this cat lived. He had never been outside the flat in all his life and would not have known how to find his way back. Six weeks later he was found hiding under a hedge looking forlorn, thin and a little scared, thankfully uninjured, Time passed and he was now seven years old, but his owner had felt since his leap from the window that he was a cat that needed a better life and more freedom than she was able to give him so asked me if I would take him in. With so many cats to look after and with age creeping up fast I was concerned and a little bit reluctant to take on a domestic cat that did have a home already. However I was concerned that he did not have the freedom he craved and seemed to live such a boring life cooped up all day, when he could be outside exploring, hunting rodents, nesting in the long grass, running, meeting other cats and animals, following scent trails and generally having fun, so of course I had to take him in. We did not let him out straight away as we needed him to get used to us, and to get used to the other feline family members and hopefully to come when called. He needed to feel this was indeed his new home. Like most cats, at first he wanted to hide which he did under the duvet on my bed. A tempting array of cat food and biscuits was placed out for him but he would not eat any cat food, not even biscuits. He eventually decided all he wanted were meaty sticks, hand fed to him, not broken and left in a dish or on the bed. We found the name of Garfield a bit cumbersome and seemed always to refer to him as
‘Ginger’, so the name stuck. A new name, a new home, it was appropriate. Very soon Ginger decided his favourite place to sleep was in the wash basin or in the bath, anywhere but in the lounge where the other cats were. He might have had feline friends at his previous home, but that did not mean he wanted to befriend any more. They tried to make him feel welcome, no one objected to him, they greeted him as best they could and tried to make him feel at home, but he was having none of it. There was one big problem with our new cat Ginger’s which I was not made favourite aware of before I took place! him in. He was a door scratcher! I had spent a lot of money on my doors, and door scratching did not go down well at all. I was beside myself worrying about how to deal with this problem. A scratching post was made up for him with a carpeted platform on the top and he did start to use this which curbed his door scratching just a little, but if he wanted to go out of a room, or into a room, he still scratched the door. Our doors are now all protected with aprons of hardboard suspended by strings hung on over-door hooks and tied around the doors. Not the prettiest home decoration I have to admit, but for the time being, it will have to do and at least they do protect the doors from any further damage from this door scratching cat. decided to keep the Longbridge design and technical office for ‘Europeanisation’ and to facilitate the move from older designs to new cars, with all production to be in Shanghai to minimise costs. The MG GS is one of a few recent iterations of this. First impression of the ‘Exclusive’ version - a boldly designed handsome-aggressive car painted in bright metallic bronze, it looks mighty good. Open the strikingly large doors to a very spacious black leather interior with armchair comfort - another major plus and I couldn’t help but reminisce to the original Austin Mini which looked tiny outside but was cavernous inside - that same Longbridge heritage! No keyless entry - for me a plus point as a physical key does improve security and thankfully no pretentious ‘button’ start, a boy-toy gadget I find rather silly on a modern road car. A large ‘home screen’ in the centre of the dashboard gives access to all settings except those basic things you need to adjust dynamically on the road. A well-specified sound system features DAB and those funny comms thingies which begin with ‘i’ - more importantly bluetooth to enable handsfree. All controls fall to hand and visibility including climate and cruise control, the latter only of the manually adjustable variety - adaptive technology is simple but the Liddar sensor costs money which hasn’t been spent on this car.
On the road, roller-skate handling enables quick and accurate road placement so fast motoring is a real pleasure, with a responsive 1.5 litre Turbo petrol engine running very quietly at cruise. To gain speed rapidly it needs rowing through the gears - a pleasure with nicely chosen gear ratio’s (another Longbridge speciality) and a snappy change that encourages playing tunes on the engine, so every journey can be a pleasure. Couple this to economy of at least 35mpg, yet if driven frugally it will easily exceed 45mpg. This is startlingly good for a large-looking petrol SUV. The demerits? Great handling comes at the expense of poor ride quality. The UK design team need to re-think spring -damper rates from scratch for a better ridehandling-comfort compromise. Better materials for the plasticky dash top and door cappings would greatly enhance perceived quality. The ‘blade’ steering column adjustment lever was almost touching my left knee, dangerously inexcusable. And why no adaptive cruise control? In summary, this car is fun and superb value. Entry level pricing ranges from £15k, to only £20k for the ‘Exclusive’. But with only a small dealer network, access to an MG service point would be very important.

hese are times of uninformed and randomly extreme views. Hard data painstakingly compiled, is ignored. Could I be referring to our extreme economic pronouncements and political double-talk? Maybe but no, my current experience is of the MG GS ‘Exclusive’ SUV with 2-wheel drive, a car built by a Chinese company from a design mainly hammered out in Longbridge, Birmingham. Based on other Journo opinions, my hopes were not high, so the reality was a major shock - this is a very good car! My lesson learned; don’t judge without tangible information and hands-on experience! MG was thought up by Cecil Kimber in the late 20’s. He offered a sporty car based upon then-current Morris models. The formula worked well but inevitably ‘progress’ over 70 years meant takeovers and watered-down cars, ultimately becoming part of the underfunded, under-managed and over-politicised Rover Group which stuttered to a halt in 2005. The Chinese (Nanjing) bought the remnants for little cash and proceeded to rationalise this basket-case into new models intended mainly for their home market. They had

Global Outdoor Classroom Day 7th September 2017

utdoor Classroom Day is a global initiative to encourage children to enjoy and share the great outdoors while playing and learning. Schools are invited to sign up; the first Outdoor Day was on 18th May while the second and third are on 7th September and 12th October 2017 respectively. A world map on www.outdoorclassroomday.com shows how many schools have joined the initiative so far. Keen to become involved, Moyles Court School in the New Forest near Ringwood have so far arranged for their Junior School to spend a day with a New Forest National Park Education Ranger learning about New Forest habitats and food chains, threats to the Forest (especially to ground nesting birds)
and what we can do to help protect the Forest environment. The Senior School’s trip to the Reptile Centre and Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary revealed adders with their babies and even the rare smooth snake. Learning outdoors creates lasting memories, builds greater awareness of the environment and provides more opportunity for children to think independently. Moyles Court School is perfectly situated for outdoor life, with its own secure woods and grounds, while the school gates open directly onto the New Forest National Park. Moyles Court are having an Open Day on 30th September where you can learn more about the School’s natural environment.

Jet Lag and Joy Lag: How to Recover from Your Holiday By Alison Runham

olidays should be a chance to relax and revitalise ourselves. So why do we sometimes feel miserable and exhausted afterwards, and how can we prevent it? JET LAG Jet lag refers to symptoms caused by disruption to your ‘body clock’ when you travel to a different time-zone. They can include changed bowel habits, tiredness, headache, anxiety, confusion and nausea. Their severity depends on age and how many time zones you cross. One or two? No problem. Three to six? You’ll feel it. Seven to twelve? You’ll need a few days to adapt, particularly when travelling east, as it’s often easier to delay sleep than make yourself sleep after a shorter day. Reducing Jet Lag Jet lag when you arrive on holiday is inconvenient, but when you return, it can be a problem – especially if you have to adapt quickly to everyday life. While you can’t prevent jet lag, there are ways to help reduce its effects. • If possible, gradually move your routine closer to that of your new time zone several days before departure.
• Ensure you’re well-rested and hydrated before and during your flight. • Nap on the plane if night time will be a long time away when you arrive. If you want to stay awake, keep active (essential for reducing the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis on long flights). • Avoid alcohol, which may increase symptoms. Remember that caffeinated drinks (e.g. tea, coffee and cola) may keep you awake. • Adjust to the new time zone immediately. Resist napping on arrival unless it’s night time. • Use the calculator created by Dr Idzikowski of Edinburgh Sleep Centre, to tell you how to use daylight to reduce jet lag at www. ba.com/jetlag. JOY LAG (POST-HOLIDAY BLUES AND EXHAUSTION) It’s not uncommon to feel glum and exhausted when you get back from your holiday. Perhaps you overdid it, packing in too many activities and trips, overindulging and not getting enough sleep. Returning to your work, responsibilities, holiday laundry, gloomy weather and an untidy house can be daunting, too – and there’s no holiday to look forward to anymore.
Preventing Joy Lag Before your holiday, try to pack gradually. Less frantic packing will help to prevent you coming back to a mess. If you can afford it, book a treat to look forward to a few weeks post-holiday. Stock up on easy meals for your return and if you can, book a day or two off after your holiday to adjust. During your holiday, don’t cram every moment with trips or organised activities. Shortlist trips, check the weather forecast and any special events and then plan the best days to venture out. Reserve other days for relaxation or a short trip to a local attraction or restaurant. Try to make the journey home as fun and relaxing as possible. Perhaps you could break your journey at a restaurant, or even a hotel – doing the final run home on a full holiday breakfast. After your holiday, be kind to yourself. Cook easy meals or treat yourself by eating out or having a takeaway. Conversely, though, start on the washing as soon as you’re back. It will only take a minute or two and you’ll know you’ve made a start. Put suitcases out of sight until they’re empty. Here’s wishing you reduced jet lag, reduced joy lag and Happy Holidays!

A
History
cross history and cultures, the concept of what makes a woman beautiful has changed according to the social background and fashions of the time. Primitive art usually depicts women as full-figured and often pregnant. This is because fertility was of the utmost importance for those civilizations. Just as today, people also adorned their bodies with jewellery, paint, tattoos and piercings, not only to attract but as status symbols. Status has always played a big part in our concept of beauty. Throughout the medieval and early Renaissance era, ‘beautiful’ women had narrow shoulders, small breasts, and, often, rounded stomachs. This didn’t necessarily mean they were pregnant but was used to show a woman was desirable and able to have many children. It was also a religious time and the more virtuous a woman was, the more beautiful she was. A long neck and a high forehead with fair brows were prized. Women would often pluck or shave hair from their hairline to achieve this look. Once married, they were also
expected to modestly cover their hair with the elaborate headpieces and veils of the period. During the late Renaissance and Baroque periods, women became more voluptuous. Food was scarce unless you were wealthy and being full-figured meant you were well-fed and therefore of high status - hence a desirable mate. In a similar way, if you were light-skinned, you were clearly from the wealthy classes as only the poor who worked outdoors had ‘coarse tanned skin’. So for several centuries pale skin was sought after and often achieved using poisonous lead-based white make-up. Wigs, which had become very elaborate and tall by the 18th century, were also worn because many women lost their hair to venereal disease. Fake beauty patches or ‘mouches’ were popular to cover up smallpox scars. Made of materials such as mouse fur and velvet, they also became a status symbol. During the 19th century, the hourglass figure became the height of female beauty. Achieved using tight whalebone corsets, this was later
accentuated by the bustle. Following WWI and suffrage, a new sense of female liberation revolutionised female beauty. Hemlines went up and dresses became straighter, giving a slender, more androgynous appearance. Coco Chanel banished the porcelain complexion to history when she showed off a suntan, declaring “a woman can never be too rich or too thin”, arguably beginning the modern trend. The 1930s-50s saw a return to curves, possibly thanks to the Hollywood film industry. Wearing make-up also became popular after actors used it to emphasise their looks on-screen. Max Factor was originally a make-up artist to the stars. The 1960s saw another beauty revolution. Once again women were re-establishing their power and asserting their sexual freedom. Miniskirts and big hair arrived and Twiggy, the slender, doe-eyed model from north-west London, was the most desirable example of womanhood. Compare her with the women in Rubens’ The Three Graces and you could not have two more opposing ideals. Over the last fifty years, beauty goals have gone through more subtle changes. Today, with models that range from the catwalk clotheshorse Gigi Hadid and black model Winnie Harlow who has vitiligo, to the curvy Ashley Graham, we seem to be embracing more diversity in women’s beauty than perhaps ever before.

n unusual arts project launched in Scunthorpe this year has reflected the public’s growing passion for interactive games, particularly if they involve solving puzzles to reach a goal. Five gold artworks, with a value of at least £1,000 each, were hidden around the area and the clues to their location were encoded in paintings hanging at the town’s 20-21 Arts Centre. Everyone loves the idea of finding hidden treasure, but opportunities are not just limited to rare events like the Scunthorpe gold hunt. Today it’s possible to take part in well-organised hobbies that encourage you to use your skills to track down hidden items or find concealed information.

TREASURE HUNTS If you’d like to try out a treasure hunt you can buy maps online that will give you the chance to explore an area in your own time, working alone or in a group. Many hunts offer you the chance to get to know an area better, learning facts and exploring places you would not normally visit. At London’s City Hunt (cityhunt.co.uk) you can download a free map to explore less well-known
London areas with intriguing histories, such as Blackfriars, Elephant and Castle and Bermondsey. Unfortunately there are no prizes involved - the reward is simply enjoyment and knowledge but City Hunt plans to run an annual, mass-participation event for which prizes will be awarded. Large treasure hunts often reach the news. The 2012 Olympics was the backdrop to the biggest ever treasure hunt game, when 466 participants, all ambassadors for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, worked in 93 teams of five to follow clues hidden on either side of the river Thames. GEOCACHING To get involved in geocaching you’ll need a sense of adventure, a GPS receiver (anything from a smartphone app to a standalone device costing several hundred pounds), access to the internet and some form of transport. A geocache is a small, waterproof box containing a logbook, a pencil and a few (usually) low value items known as ‘swag’. You should never remove a ‘swag’ item unless you replace it with something of equal or
higher value. When you find a geocache, you must sign and date the log book, decide whether you want to swap any swag items, replace the cache exactly where you found it then record your visit online. The cache hider’s ‘reward’ is to read the online comments left by the players who find the box. The Geocache Association of Great Britain (gagb.co.uk) is a good source of information on all aspects of geocaching. It also holds a database of landowners who have given permission for geocache activities, so you can avoid the risk of trespassing. If you enjoy following a trail and exploring new locations, not to mention the thrill of using your detective skills to find something that would otherwise remain hidden, then you’ll be well rewarded by these exciting outdoor hobbies. However you don’t always need the code-breaking skills of Alan Turing or the high-tech powers of GPS to find what you are looking for. On the Scunthorpe gold hunt Rachel Welch of Grimbsy beat the crowd to discover the first object. How did she do it? By ignoring the codes provided and relying solely on her powers of observation!

y connecting with others we can begin to know and develop ourselves. When we connect with another we find that we have a curiosity in the other, have a mutual genuine interest, we listen well to what the other has to say and show concern for each other. We are kind, play and are open, we become vulnerable but feel safe. Just think of the last time someone rushed towards you with open arms, confirming how well liked or loved you are. When connections go wrong they can be very painful indeed. For example; when you expect a loving welcome and you get a cold reception, or you express a fond goodbye but receive a quick ‘bye’ and the other person quickly withdraws. When there are one too many misconnections the other person in the relationship may begin to withdraw and move away. When misconnections become too frequent something in the relationship may break and is never repaired. This may disrupt other relationships in a person’s life for years to come. A connection may fail when a person dares to tell the other an important thing and the other makes light of it, does not react at all or becomes angry and defensive. The conversation lacks empathy and can be seen as emotional abandonment. If you have been affected by emotional abandonment then

There is a large cast of characters, and the timeline is hard to follow at times, as it jumps from past to present. Nevertheless, it’s a very enjoyable beach read.

Portrait of a Local Artist The landscape and its variety attracted artist Dick Hewitson to Dorset.
A
keen walker and living in the county since 1970, he taught biology and used to run very successful residential biology field courses in the Purbecks. Now a full-time painter, Dick finds much inspiration from the area. “I do some plein air painting, and tend to prefer coastal locations, including the Purbecks,” he says. However, many of his paintings arise from drawings, so he does quite a lot of charcoal drawings when researching a painting. “I often paint recognisable places, like Chapman’s pool, but do not really paint ‘views’. There is always a degree of abstraction in my paintings and I am not aiming for photographic realism.” As a university student in the early ‘60s Dick studied biology. In that period he became very interested in the arts, especially the visual arts. “During my post-graduate teacher training course at Birmingham, training to become a science teacher, I had the opportunity to learn about oil painting, one morning a week for a whole term, when I studied with a tutor from the art department of Birmingham University. I was the only student. Basically, I learned how to handle oil paint. I began painting on my own in those early days, but I spent my working life mainly as a biology teacher. I did not pick up painting again until about 2011. I realised long ago that if I was to paint seriously, I would need to put a lot of time into it, which is why I spend several days a week painting, most weeks. I am very attracted to the natural world, and this may be reflected in the rather ‘organic’ quality of much of my work.” Dick is a member of Creative Coverage, which represents selected professional artists and craftspeople. www.dickhewitson.co.uk

Moors Valley Country Park to share in National Lottery fund to improve access for people with disabilities
M
oors Valley Country Park & Forest near Ringwood is benefitting from a share in a half-million pound National Lottery-funded scheme to improve access for visitors with mobility and sensory impairments to heritage sites in the south west. The Heritage Ability scheme, established by Living Options Devon, was awarded £527,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, to build a greater understanding of the barriers experienced by disabled and deaf people when visiting heritage sites in the south west. Moors Valley is one of 18 heritage sites to benefit from the funding. Moors Valley has already made great strides in improving accessibility and achieved a Gold award for Access & Inclusivity in the 2016 Dorset Tourism Awards. Led by a team of disabled and deaf volunteers and advisors, the Heritage Ability project includes improving access for people with physical disabilities, establishing British Sign Language as part of each site’s interpretation and making adaptations to improve experiences for those with autism. By developing tailored ways of working for each site, and providing training for heritage site staff, the project aims to make long-term changes to the accessibility
of heritage across the South West. Katie Davies, Accessibility Champion at Moors Valley, said, “We are really excited to be part of this project. Working with specialist advisers will help us to focus on where we can improve and ensure that we have the right skills and facilities in place to make the countryside as accessible as possible to everyone. With this in mind, we want to hear from representatives of local organisations, and individuals with particular access needs, and first-hand knowledge of Moors Valley, who can help us to identify where we can make best use of this great opportunity.” Diana Crump, CEO at Living Options said: “We would like to thank members of the public whose support for the Heritage Lottery Fund has made it possible for us to bring this project to life. Verwood Concert Brass Band Picnic in the Park Concert
T
he weather on Sunday afternoon of 11th July couldn’t have been better for the Picnic in the Park concert - although perhaps too hot for some as many of the audience took to the shade under the trees. It was fabulous to see so many people turn up at the Verwood Recreational Ground for the concert which coincided with Brass Fest UK , an initiative whereby bands up and down the country were encouraged to put on free concerts for their community. It is great to know the people of Verwood appreciate the band. Thanks go to guest conductor Jonathan Lush-Camps who was standing in for Kevin Smith.
Hillside Teaching Assistants celebrate 25 year awards
T
here was celebration at Hillside Community First School in Verwood recently as staff were lauded for their services to education in Dorset. Mrs Yvonne Kemp and Mrs Sally Christopher, both teaching assistants at the school, were invited to Dorchester to receive a long-service award for 25 years of continuous service in schools in Dorset. Both ladies started working at the school as parent helpers, enjoying it so much that they trained to become teaching assistants, sometimes also taking whole classes. Yvonne Kemp told us that they had both enjoyed the afternoon and the chance to reflect back over the varied experiences they have enjoyed at the school.
