Dear Readers,
his year the 25th Verwood Rustic Fayre is on Monday August 27th and is always a lot of fun with lots to see and do for everyone. It’s one of my favourite local days out on a bike too. I follow the pleasant leafy Castleman Trailway from home before following signs to Moors Valley Country Park, stopping for the obligatory coffee of course! Then continue through the park to arrive at the Rustic Fayre via Potterne Park. An excellent traffic-free route with no queues and very green! Our cover photo taken at a recent Fayre is of a quirky little blue 1960s Messerschmitt three wheeled bubble car. These were produced when the popularity of motor bikes was waning and enabled those with only a motor bike
with best wishes,
licence to keep warm and dry in a tiny and economical car! Some of these had a max speed of 90mph - a very scary thought if you have ever sat in one! In this issue page 10 tells us about another very quirky and surprisingly long established and ancient British tradition of well-dressing or well-flowering! I have never heard of it I must admit and had to google it to find out more after reading the article! Seems it’s big in the Midlands though - very much like our local scarecrow competitions. Of course there are many more local events happening all round us during August and September - check out our What’s On pages 26 & 28 for more details. Hopefully the sunshine lasts just a bit longer during the school holidays!

PAST and PRESENT
The Timber Mills - part 1 - Romford Mill Romford Mill 1980s approx
J
ames Thorne came to live at Romford Mill, in the late 1870’s and on the 1881 census described himself as a Farmer and Miller. He started by collecting wheat from miles around, grinding it and returning the flour. On a small way he was also engaged in hurdle making, timber felling and saw milling and in 1891 was described as a Timber Merchant and Farmer. Towards the end of the century he also became an Agricultural Contractor, starting his own threshing business. The first machines were horse-drawn and powered with a windlass-like affair to drive the thresher. His son Robert took over shortly before his father died in 1910 by which time the threshing tackle and machines were drawn and powered by steam engines. The engines had names such as “King of the Forest and “Greyhound” and always guaranteed an audience wherever they went. In 1914 Robert purchased a new engine “The Romford Express” and after a two day journey from Basingstoke created a great amount of excitement upon its arrival. One of its main jobs was to draw 20 ton loads to and from Southampton which was begun early one day to return the next.
At this time the yard at Romford Mill was a very busy area with an engineering workshop, wheelwright, and blacksmith as well as a sawmill. The original watermill was still working as a grist mill, preparing cattle feed for local farmers. There were fifteen steam engines each towing its own set of tackle comprising a threshing machine, elevator and caravan with a straw trusser at the rear.. The heyday was in the 1930s but after that came a steady decline finally coming to an end in the 1960s after the invention of the combine harvester. Today the yard appears very quiet indeed and the old watermill fortunately still looks very picturesque. July 2018

Hillside Community First School News
P
upils of Hillside Community First School in Verwood had a brilliant Arts Week recently on an outside theme, inspired by the artist Henri Matisse’s picture “Through the Window”. This supported the hard work of the PTA improving the enriching environments around the school. The Reception Year used materials to weave through a fence outside their room and also painted Friendship Stops to be used at playtimes, whilst Year 1 children created wind chimes out of terracotta plant pots and painted bird boxes. Year 2 built Peace Poles and decorated the posts along the patio. The picnic benches near the Year 3 classrooms
The finished mural were painted in bright colours by the pupils, who also made a bottle top mural! Year 4 created some fun sign posts for the school’s Woodland Walk, turned wooden spoons into garden gnomes and improved a view by painting people on the fence panels outside their classroom. The school was also extremely lucky to have an artist, Chloe Dowsett, support them with their Arts Week. Chloe combined the children’s ideas to create two final mural plans. All of the children voted and the winning heathland design was painted on the wall next to the patio, ably assisted by groups of KS2 pupils. An amazing result!

S
Be Chimney Fire AWARE
tatistics show that there are approximately 7000 chimney fires reported each year and the majority of these are preventable. Chimney fires are caused when soot and tar deposits build up and reach a sufficient level that they are vulnerable to ignite. The heat from the fire warms the tar and soot deposits, these then release combustible particles which then ignite once the desired temperature is achieved and the fire then rapidly migrates up the chimney and into the roof space. SIGNS & SYMPTOMS of a Chimney Fire: A loud roaring noise. Larger quantities of smoke leaving the chimney. Sparks and flames leaving the chimney. Smoke in adjoining rooms / loft space.
IF your fire doesn’t light, roar, burn or draw air as well as it used to, then this indicates that it needs professionally sweeping. A clean chimney helps prevent the risk of fires and any structural damage to your property. Having your chimney regularly swept will prevent the build up of soot and tar and clear other obstructions such as birds, bees or wasps nests, together with fallen leaves and other debris. In the opinion of a current full time serving Fireman, “Chimneys often fall into that “out of sight, out of mind” category. But they are a hidden danger if they are not professionally maintained. Remember - these fires and gases are deadly and it is imperative that we ensure your lives are safe.” Complete Sweep recommend routine maintenance at least once a year by a professional certified chimney sweep.

Celebrating the welldressed well by Kate McLelland
Quirky Britain
I
f you happen to visit the Midlands region between May and September, you might be in for a big surprise. During this time intriguing temporary structures can appear almost overnight, creating a riot of colour in the middle of an ordinary town or village street. These structures can be anything up to twelve foot tall and the complex artwork at the centre will be created from natural materials such as flowers, mosses, leaves, twigs, seeds, beans and small pine cones. If you’re new to the area you might imagine that these objects have been randomly placed as part of a local art festival, but look a little closer and you’ll realise that each display has been carefully positioned so it frames a well or freshwater spring. So what exactly is going on? Welcome to the world of welldressing (also known as ‘wellflowering’), a thriving tradition that predates the time when historical records began. According to the website welldressing.com over a hundred villages and towns in Britain still take part annually,
creating artworks to celebrate their local fresh water source. The history of welldressing It’s likely that the custom began as a pagan ritual, designed to pay tribute to the spirit that guarded the natural spring. The early Church, disapproving of such heathen traditions, reinterpreted the rites as a Christian thanksgiving ceremony. The practice remained popular until the reign of Henry VIII, when Chancellor Thomas Cromwell issued instructions for welldressing equipment to be destroyed: presumably because ‘idolatrous’ images – forbidden by Henry’s reformed church – were being used. That must have come as a blow to rural communities like Tissington in Derbyshire. Sir Richard Fitzherbert, the ninth baronet of Tissington Hall, claims that during natural disasters the wells provided a lifeline for the people. He explains: “In times of drought they never dried up, so everyone lived from the water, and in times of plague, the village cut itself off from the outside world and had a safe, reliable water source for survival.”
A race against time The process starts when the wooden boards on which the designs will be mounted are soaked in a local river or pond for several days. Clay is then smoothed onto the wet wooden frame, ready for the design to be added. Creating the artwork can take up to a week, so after the design has been etched into the wet clay, everyone needs to work quickly to make sure the display goes up in time. There is huge competition between villages to create the best display and that competitive spirit has now been channelled into an official event. Last year the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show started a competition to recognise the artistic flair of the nation’s well-dressers and for two years running these displays have enjoyed pride of place in RHS Chatsworth’s community area. So, if you happen to visit the Midlands over the summer, look out for these spectacular boards. Nowadays the concept of ‘well-dressing’ may seem a little archaic, but these remarkable displays stand as a tribute to the skill, patience and local pride of the volunteers who work so hard to create them.

e find ourselves in the last throws of summer with autumn just around the corner and life is busy on the reserve. The fruits of summer are evident particularly on the brambles as the blackberries ripen; there is plenty of food for all the birds, reptiles, mammals and insects. On sunny days search for colourful butterflies as they wing from flower to flower; see comma, painted lady, peacock, red admiral and brimstone to name just a few. Now is a great time to be wowed by the dazzling display of dragon and damsel flies as they whizz past, patrolling their feeding grounds. Why not join Reserves Officer Bob Chapman on a summer wildlife walk on Wednesday 1st August from 1.30pm until 3.30pm in search of some of these delightful insects. Please telephone 01425 472760 to book your place. For some of the birds August is a time to moult, freshening up and growing new feathers after the wear and tear

of the breeding season. For others it will be time to move on. As we get into September, the swallows and martins will be heading off to their African wintering grounds. Before they leave they prepare for their long journey by gathering in their hundreds to feed up over Ibsley Water. They create an amazing and memorable spectacle as they demonstrate their remarkable, acrobatic flying skills. It is not just birds leaving though, duck numbers including mallard, teal, wigeon, gadwall, tufted duck and shoveler are all beginning to build up. Now is also a great time to get a view of, or if you’re lucky an impressive photograph of a kingfisher. The fledglings will be dispersing across the reserve now and certainly last year there were regular sightings and photo opportunities, particularly from Goosander Hide. Often all you get is a flash of shining blue as they dart along the water’s edge, but ours seemed happy to sit and pose for a while.
The light trap will be attracting a wonderful variety of moths, for example pink barred sallow, feathered gothic and if we’re lucky Clifden nonpareil or the blue underwing, especially if the nights are cloudy and warm. For your own glimpse of these and other creatures of the night, including bats, join the Education Officer for a family night walk on Friday 14th September from 7pm until 8.30pm and head out onto the reserve after dusk. Please telephone to book your place. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. itroen’s first C4 Cactus was a brave attempt to make an ‘affordable’ medium hatch to compete with Renault’s bargainbasement Dacia brand - itself quite successful in capturing the bottom end of the market. While the first Cactus was very original in looks and style, failed attempts to make the car price-competitive were typified by short cuts in the design. Maybe Citroen lost sight of the fact that they are a traditional car manufacturer operating in a high quality - and high cost - manufacturing environment. The result was a car which was interesting but not significantly cheaper than mainstream Citroen offerings. In 2018 the series 2 which while having an exterior design retaining the Cactus signature, has become more up-market and smarter without any significant price increase, now starting at £19k. It has adopted the new Citroen ‘chunky’ nose and ditched the previously standard roof rails while the airbumps so prominent in the series 1 have been toned down
neatly. Driver and passenger comfort is prime through each trim level with super-comfortable seats and a new hydraulic cushion suspension to give this car a ‘big-car’ feel. Many safety aids are included even in basic trim. It has become even more eco-friendly on all levels, yet is a much more satisfying driver’s car. And so to my test car. The base model called ‘Feel’ was supplied in a fetching metallic blue with two-tone grey cloth interior, powered by a 100bhp diesel with 5-speed gearbox. This power unit is absurdly economical - over 60mpg whatever you throw at it and capable of much more - and is well below permitted NOx and CO2 levels. But then Groupe Peugeot has always been at the forefront of clean air technology so this excellent performance was to be expected. Other tackle thrown in included all the normal safety gear plus auto safety braking, sat-nav, DAB radio, the obligatory bluetooth, tyre pressure sensing and a rear parking camera with aural warnings. On the road? A very quiet and pleasant ride at any speed, the cushioning seats and suspension going unnoticed until be-
coming aware of the irregular pitter-patter of the tyres as they explored all the potholes our wonderful local councils could dig up. On several occasions it was reminiscent of the 1960’s Hydrolastic Austin 1300 and 1800, so smooth was the ride. This suspension out-performs many much larger cars - alone a ‘tour-de-force’, thank you Citroen! The handling and roadholding were also excellent with full marks to the electric steering for being ultra-light at parking speeds, but diminishing to lots of ‘feel’ as the speed elevated. Despite the eco credentials, the engine was lusty without burning tarmac, yet personally I felt it could use a sixth speed to aid eco-cruising still further, a fitment on more expensive variants. As regards space, this really is a trump card. Lots of room in the front, with those seats far back there was still a Ryanair level of seating in the back - up to 2 hours endurance if somebody is available to unfold you afterwards. The ‘piece de resistance’ was a surprisingly huge boot capable of taking 2 suitcases up to 28” tall with room on top and around for smaller bags, the odd violin, laptop cases, emergency kits and all that jazz. So a very likeable car, ecofriendly and capable of travelling across Europe with peeps and baggage - yes, we did it!

Spotlight on Verwood Choral Society: 30 Years of Music.
D
uring the summer of 1988, several choirs from different churches and groups met to sing for a joint event. This proved to be so enjoyable, that it was decided that we needed a Society in Verwood that could get together and make music. Following an advertisement in a local magazine and by word of mouth, it was agreed the first meeting would be in the lounge of Montrose Sheltered Housing (as it was then), on a Monday in September and we waited to see what would emerge. To our surprise, 52 singers turned up – 8 bases and 8 tenors, as well as a good number of both sopranos and altos - Verwood Choral Society was born! Ann Mayo, our Musical Director, has been leading the choir for the whole of its 30 year existence. In this time we have had some fluctuation in numbers, but always managed to keep going and,
currently, there are about 40 members. We have raised over £20,000.00 for both local and national charities and a special 30th Anniversary concert took place in June at Verwood Methodist Church, featuring music sung in previous years. This concert raised around £575.00 for the Multiple Sclerosis Day Centre in West Parley. We all enjoy singing together and our aim is to encourage others to join us and bring enjoyment to those who support our concerts, whilst raising money for good causes. We are taking a break now until 24th September when rehearsals will start for the Christmas concert, which will be held on 1st December. New singers are always welcome especially tenors and basses. Rehearsals take place at St Michael’s Church, Verwood, on Mondays from 7.30 - 9.00pm. For more information. Please contact the Chairperson on 01202 829212.

Choosing To Be Yourself
By Christina Smith
Do you ever feel guilty that you have done something that will upset your parents or your family?
Remember, if you keep on doing what you always do, you will keep on getting what you get!
Do you feel smothered by your parents even as an adult?
If you wish to explore self-differentiation, counselling may help you to find a way to break free from the family rules and make the choice to be yourself. www.allaboutme.email.
Do you live a double life with your family or perhaps you feel like a kid again when you go home? For a lot of us this is a common experience and these feelings happen frequently. Your family may expect certain things from you, or for you to behave in a certain way with them. In fact, most families require these rules. These family rules may be explicitly or implicitly implied, but either way they still have influence on you. The real growth or real maturing progress requires finding our own sense of self or self-differentiation. In other words, we become ourselves as we grow up with our own sense of boundaries, without the need to over please our family or behave in an overly responsible way. All families have a benefit for us doing what we do, and they would prefer that it stays that way. Healthy families allow more freedom and more sense of self for individuals. For more dysfunctional families it becomes more important to maintain that sense of enmeshment and confusion. This emotional intimidation usually occurs from one generation to another. Even over worrying about you may be an enmeshment state which makes you feel pressured to conform. The threat of emotional distance can be very painful for those who want to mature and find themselves. Family threats of emotional, physical, spiritual or financial abandonment are only a few ways this intimidation occurs.

Hidden history uncovered at The Salisbury Museum
T
he Salisbury Museum is pleased to announce that in partnership with the British Museum, a major new exhibition will open on 13 October 2018. ‘Hoards: A Hidden History of Ancient Britain’ will run until 5 January 2019 and aims to reveal some of the fascinating stories behind the headlines of buried treasure, with displays of hoards from across the British Isles. The exhibition traces the story of hoarding from Bronze weapons discovered in the river Thames and the first Iron Age coin hoards, through to hoards buried after the collapse of Roman rule in Britain and in more recent times. It will showcase recent discoveries of hoards reported by finders and archaeologists through the Treasure Act and brings together objects from the British Museum and Salisbury Museum, including the spectacular Ipswich Iron Age gold torcs and new prehistoric and Roman finds from Wessex. The displays will explore the reasons why ancient people have placed precious objects underwater and in the ground since the Bronze Age. They may have been accidentally lost or stolen, discarded as worthless, saved for recycling, hidden for safekeeping, or offered up to the gods. Prehistoric communities deposited hoards as part of rituals to honour gods or ancestors, and to demonstrate power and wealth, while Roman coin hoards have traditionally been viewed as being hidden for safekeeping from external threats. The large number of coin
hoards dating to the later Roman period could suggest that this period was one of political instability and economic insecurity. However, the archaeological evidence may point to different explanations for the burial of these hoards and the careful study of these finds has revealed a wealth of information about the past. Adrian Green, Director of Salisbury Museum said, ‘Many of the incredible finds in this exhibition were reported through the Portable Antiquities Scheme. This national scheme is run by the British Museum to encourage the recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public. The information recorded about finds from the Wiltshire area has transformed our knowledge of the past and helped to make exhibitions like this possible.’

Lethal Leatherjackets by Pippa Greenwood
D
Gardening
addy-longlegs or crane-flies are starting to hatch out now as adults, but it is their young – known as leatherjackets – that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in the last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. Leatherjackets feed on grass roots (and can also cause problems in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are tasty snacks for animals such as crows, rooks, magpies, badgers or foxes. So if there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals will search them out, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be quickly devastated.
What is the best way to check if you have them? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches thoroughly and do the same with a ripped-up patch. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners or an opened-out plastic compost bag will work well. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface.
nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply – I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddy-longlegs and when soil conditions are right – usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat – and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn.
So how do you know leatherjackets are to blame? Leatherjackets are greyishbrown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all.
So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available, suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover but you won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life. You can, however, find out more and order them from www.pippagreenwood. com/products in the Protect Your Plants section. We’ll send them out by first class post in an insulated envelope for you to show those pesky leatherjackets who’s the boss!
To remove more, repeat this black polythene trick and deposit the pests on the bird table as free and nutritious bird food. For a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution, use the biological control

Luxembourg By Solange Hando
I
n this dramatic setting a good place to start is Constitution Square, where above the valley of the Pétrusse the iconic statue of the ‘Golden Lady’ holds out a crown of laurel leaves as a national emblem for pride and peace. Just steps away the mighty Aldolphe bridge towers above the ravine, where the tiny rivulet meanders among flowering trees, pocket-sized allotments, dainty footbridges and deserted trails.
Travel
Wandering through this lush country-like oasis you can hardly believe you are in the city centre, but back on the top the cathedral beckons, a three-spired pilgrimage site in flamboyant Gothic style with a touch of Renaissance, guarding the tombs of the Grand Ducal family. It’s only a stroll to the Parliament House, the Grand Ducal Palace and the bourgeois dwellings and picturesque lanes of the Old Town, listed by Unesco. There are spacious parks and pleasant town squares, most
‘Expect the unexpected,’ they say, and compact as it is, this is a truly surprising city, looping around its natural and manmade wonders on many different levels. Carved by the deep gorges of the Pétrusse and Alzette rivers, it teeters on the edge of precipitous cliffs, spanned by myriad bridges and viaducts. popular the Place d’Armes surrounded by pedestrian shopping lanes. Named after military parades held under the Sun King, the locals call it ‘the city’s living room’, a place to meet friends on a café terrace, relax under the trees, browse the market stalls or dance on festival days. Along Holy Spirit Street, the square by the same name has some stunning views across the lower town, close to Quirinus, the 11th century chapel with a miraculous spring, and the hidden confluence of the Pétrusse and the lovely Alzette which curls around the eastern edge of the city. There, above the Alzette, the Chemin de la Corniche was described by a local writer as ‘the most beautiful balcony in Europe’ lined with some of the finest aristocratic buildings, following the old ramparts all the way to the Bock, the rocky outcrop where history began in 963. Towers, citadel, gates, fortified bridge, casemates with 23 km of tunnels hewn into the cliffs: lords and
masters left their marks over the centuries but today, on the banks of the Alzette, the Lower Grund is the most enticing district with its quiet lanes, half-timbered houses and at the heart of it all the striking Neumünster Abbey, now turned into a cultural centre. There are some delightful walks along the river, all shimmering reflections as weeping willows whisper below the garden terraces and a mini vineyard. But close to the airport, the Kirchberg plateau is a totally different world, a 21st century celebration dedicated to business, finance, European institutions and art in dazzling architectural styles. Top of the list are the Modern Art Museum (MUDAM) and the Philharmonie Concert Hall which claims three auditoriums. Luxembourg is indeed a city of many faces, the enduring capital of the last Grand Duchy in the world, traditional, vibrant and truly unique.

Men, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention By Alison Runham
Health
S
eptember 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds and on the rise worldwide, with nearly 800,000 suicides a year (that’s one every 40 seconds) and around 20 times as many failed attempts. Suicide Risk Factors Men aged 20-29 and 40-49 are most at risk. A clue to why lies in the Movember Foundation’s conclusion that mental health stigmas and men’s reluctance to discuss and seek help for mental health issues are two major reasons why their life expectancy remains lower than women’s. The biggest risk factor for suicide is a previous suicide attempt. Although suicide is often clearly linked to mental disorders and alcohol abuse, many suicides happen impulsively in moments of crisis: a trauma, relationship break-up, financial problems or chronic pain and illness that suddenly overwhelms us. Conflict, disaster, violence, abuse, loss and a sense of isolation are also risk factors and rates are high amongst marginalised groups, e.g. refugees, migrants, prisoners and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. So how can we help to
prevent suicide, both as individuals and a society? Suicide Prevention • Tackle discrimination, damaging stereotypes and stigmas. Children raised in an environment where people are ridiculed for expressing their sexual orientation or feelings will be scared to express theirs, putting them at higher risk of isolation, depression and suicide. It can be tough to tackle discrimination among family, friends and colleagues, but it’s essential. We must also break down stigmas by treating mental illness as we do physical illness. Encourage others (especially men) to express their feelings and seek help with mental health issues, and increase awareness of the dangers of alcohol and its misuse. Suicide is preventable, says The British Psychological Society. “Early identification and effective action can get people the care they need.” Depression and alcoholrelated disorders must be identified and treated swiftly. • Pay closer attention to those around us. Many suicide victims reportedly seemed ‘fine’ just days or even hours before ending their lives. We must look out for warning signs
and, on a practical level, remove (as far as possible) the means for attempting suicide from those we fear are at risk. If you are struggling with a crisis or a mental health issue, do get help. It may feel like your pain will never end, but things can get better. In his book Reasons to Stay Alive, depression sufferer and bestselling author Matt Haig reminds us that depression may seem vast, but it’s always smaller than us. “It operates within you; you do not operate within it. It may be a dark cloud passing across the sky, but… you are the sky. “You were there before it. And the cloud can’t exist without the sky, but the sky can exist without the cloud.” Useful Info Samaritans: www.samaritans. org call 116 123, open 24/7 every day Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) – for men www.thecalmzone.net 0800 58 58 58 open 5pm midnight every day Matt Haig, Reasons to Stay Alive, Canongate Books. Staying Safe In The Sun by Kate Duggan
Don’t know your UVA from your UVB? Worried about a mole? Want to be prepared in case you get sunburnt? This guide is for you…
F
irst up – the difference between UVA and UVB. Both are types of ultraviolet radiation that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer. UVA rays prematurely age skin, leading to more wrinkles and pigmentation. UVB rays are the ones that actually burn.
If you do forget to slap on the sunscreen, aloe vera can help to soothe sunburnt skin. Not all aloe vera gels are created equally, however. Some contain very little actual aloe vera, so do check the ingredients list. Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Gel is a good choice. It has
Beauty
‘SPF’ is short for sun protection factor. The higher the number, the better the protection. The British Association of Dermatologists recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or over. However, the SPF only relates to UVB rays, not UVA rays. So you’ll need to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation. You then need to apply it at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hours. Weleda’s Edelweiss Sunscreen Facial Lotion protects against both UVA and UVB, has an SPF of 30 and is packed with skin-friendly ingredients, such as organic coconut and jojoba oils. It’s suitable for all skin types and smells rather lovely, with subtle notes of citrus and lavender. Priced at £13.95, the lotion can be bought online from www.weleda.co.uk.
an instant cooling effect, is hypoallergenic and helps to restore hydration. The gel costs £5.59 from Holland & Barrett. Do you suffer from prickly heat, or find you only have to look at the sun to go red? Trilogy’s Very Gentle Calming Serum is worth a try. It’s specially formulated to reduce inflammation and irritation. As the name
suggests, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for even sensitive skin. Ingredients include aloe vera, green tea, chamomile, sweet almond oil and evening primrose oil. The serum costs £29.50 from Boots or www.trilogyproducts. co.uk. If you’re worried about a mole or other changes to your skin, it’s always best to book in to see your GP. In the meantime, The British Association of Dermatologists’ ABCD-Easy guide details the main things to look for: • Asymmetry: the two halves of the area may differ in shape. • Border: the edges of the area may be irregular or blurred, and sometimes show notches. • Colour: this may be uneven. Different shades of black, brown and pink may be seen. • Diameter: most melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. Report any change in size, shape or diameter to your doctor. • Expert: if in doubt, check it out! If your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a Consultant Dermatologist. Your GP can refer you via the NHS. For more information about protecting your skin, check out www.bad.org.uk.

Taxman highlights latest bogus phone & email scams HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have updated their online examples and guidance on recent bogus phone and email scams targeting elderly and vulnerable people in particular. Their update is worth a read however by all Roundabout readers to find out about websites, emails, letters, text messages and phone calls used by scammers and fraudsters to get your personal information. The examples often have poor English but frequently also have copies of apparently genuine HMRC logos. What are these scams? They are bogus calls or phishing emails which encourage unsuspecting people to provide confidential financial and personal information, such as banking details, in exchange for a promised, but in reality, bogus tax refund. Other messages state that HMRC is filing a lawsuit against them and they must make immediate payment.
HMRC never send notifications of a tax rebate or refund by email, or ask you to disclose personal or payment information by email. Do not open any attachments or click on any links within an email or text message, as they may contain malicious software or direct you to a bogus website. Their guidance has examples of • Tax refund and rebate scams • Phishing email & website examples • Bogus phone calls • Social media scams View their guidance and examples (updated 2 July 2018) at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ phishing-and-bogus-emails-hm-revenueand-customs-examples/phishing-emails-andbogus-contact-hm-revenue-and-customs-examples
