Dear Readers,

elcome to our Christmas edition of Roundabout Verwood. Like me, do you always find that Christmas seems to rush towards us once Halloween and Bonfire night have passed? We found that Halloween Trick or Treaters were very scarce this year and my husband was very pleased - especially since we had quite a bit of chocolate left over! I wasn’t too upset either! Page 8 in this issue gives us lots of tips for rustic Christmas decorations which always look good. I love candles and have recently invested in some very realistic real wax battery candles, which, unlike real candles can just be left on until the battery runs out! Much, much safer than the real versions of course - especially with grandchildren around! We have a few pages with gift ideas such as Top Tech

Gadgets on page 14 and a few selected books on page 40. Or you might even want to add some new vinyl to your old record collection - I know many of you will have LPs stored in the roof like us! (Hope they haven’t all warped!) Our hobbies article on page 24 tells us all about this new trend! I hadn’t realised how popular vinyl was until recently when I saw a collection of classic albums in Ferndown Sainsburys including Stevie Wonder’s 1973 Innervisions LP. Looks like my husband is getting a new turntable for Christmas this year! espite appearances on this old photo, this spot in Verwood around 100 years ago was still probably one of the busiest locations in the village in the early 1900’s. The routes from Ringwood, Cranborne, Three Legged Cross and Wimborne St Giles, etc all converging here. Note the relatively recently built property above the children on the left. A short time after this original photo was taken Shearing’s Cycle & Motor Cycle Repair business appeared in a corrugated iron garage on the corner to the right of the large house. 2002 partially hidden by the trees on Ferrett’s Green which is in the process of various improvements as is the corner where Shearing’s business stood. Our final and current up to date photo below shows quite a few changes even from the relatively recent 2002 view. The New Dukes Court apartments now fill the empty corner where Shearings business was, but the large, now ‘period’ building October 2016 which was so dominant in the old photo still stands just to the left of Dukes Court. Ferrett’s Green improvements have been complete for some time, Manor Road is now part one way only and Edmondsham Road is blocked off for vehicular traffic. Still known locally as ‘The Crossroads’, it has now become barely a T junction!

Home & Interiors A Rustic Christmas Simple festive decorations can be the most appealing, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell

ho doesn’t love a natural look? Unpretentious and understated, natural Christmas decorations suit every home, large or small, modern or traditional, and make a fabulous, timeless alternative to commercialised glitz and glitter. The ideal centrepiece is a real tree, best bought from a good local stockist. Choose one that’s as fresh as possible, make a new cut at the bottom, and display in a stand (a wicker basket is perfect) that holds a reservoir of water. (Tip: the Nordmann Fir holds its needles really well.) Decorate your tree generously without overloading, and keep to a limited colour scheme (white, red, green and brown are all great), using natural materials (see box). For a touch of sparkle, twine the tree with small, plain white fairy lights. Feeling inspired? Then make decorations with the family. Garlands of popcorn,

nuts, gingerbread stars and paper strings of angels or snowflakes are adorable. Instead of shiny baubles, cut simple shapes from felt and blanket-stitch them around the outside, or make a wreath using garden clippings. Similarly, you can create wonderful decorations using sprigs of evergreen, ivy, pine cones (perhaps sprayed with artificial snow), rose hips, dried seed heads and twigs (lashed into a star shape). Or tie dried slices of apple and orange together with gardener’s string and add cinnamon sticks and star anise. If you’re short of time, all these will be in the shops, along with others such as birch bark candle holders, driftwood Christmas trees and needlefelted and knitted owls, reindeer and robins. Wrap presents in brown paper and string, or lengths of fabric and cotton ribbon. Use cardboard luggage labels, and why not embellish

the plain paper with potato printing in white – something children might enjoy? For receiving presents, there’s nothing nicer than knitted stockings hanging by the fire, perhaps with some widely available printed hessian sacks for larger gifts. Fresh flowers are fabulous at Christmas – hyacinths, amaryllis and poinsettias are classic and all look particularly special in white. Wrap pots in hessian tied with string or pop groups of them into a wicker basket; you can decorate the tops of the pots with silver moss. Less is more with this look, so laying the festive table is easy. A linen runner or place mats, plain white china, clear glass and simple decorations such as bowls of pine cones or oranges studded with cloves, and perhaps a vase full of evergreens, twigs and boughs. Cosy, welcoming and unpretentious. Finally, add candles, small and tall, anywhere their flickering glow will make you feel happy. Alternatively, tea lights look pretty inside old jam jars, which is safer if you have young children around. Pop a mince pie in the oven and heat some mulled wine on the hob, and here it is – a very merry Christmas. here’s a very good chance that this year, Santa’s sack will be stuffed with gadgets: from kid-friendly tablets to expensive iPhones, many people’s presents will be of the digital variety. But you don’t need to spend a fortune to get some great gifts. One of the highlights of the shopping calendar is Black Friday, which is a recent American import: the last Friday in November - this year, that’s the 25th of November is when shops offer massive discounts to kick-start the Christmas shopping season. It’s grown to encompass Cyber Monday, the Monday immediately afterwards, and some retailers run an entire week of deals in the run-up to Black Friday weekend. In the last few years UK retailers have got in on the act, and Black Friday is a great source of bargains, especially on electronics from online retailers. Just make sure you use a price checking service to ensure that the bargains you see are genuinely good deals. Some retailers mimic supermarket wine deals, with gadgets priced artificially high in October so they can appear to be terrific bargains in November. Buying for technology fans can be tricky because they often go out and buy the gadgets they want as

Thank goodness for accessories, then: a leather case for a smartphone or a messenger bag for a laptop makes a great gift, although watch out for “bonded leather”, which is artificially produced and doesn’t wear like real leather. Sony noise cancelling headphones Headphones are always a good gift, especially now that Apple has dumped the familiar 3.5mm headphone adapter from its latest iPhones, so wireless Bluetooth headphones or headphones that use the Lightning connector will be a big upgrade over the fairly rubbish Apple versions. We know from experience that noise-cancelling headphones make train, bus and air travel much more relaxing, and while high-end models can cost over £200 it’s quite possible to get noise-cancelling phones from the likes of Sony for less than £20. Bobby Part 2

e had taken Bobby in as we had been informed that he needed Veterinary care for a large abscess on his back. He was found to be ‘intact’ by the Vet, but was not neutered when under anaesthetic for his abscess as the Vet had not sought my permission, so he was due for another visit for his next operation. I was now concerned that the trust I had built up with him would be undone when I needed to pick him again for his next visit to the Vet but I needn’t have worried, I was allowed to pick him up with no argument and no need for a blanket this time. He did not lash out with his sharp claws and there was no noise of protest. The Vet was concerned that his wound had not healed as well as it should so I was instructed to give him 2 antibiotic pills every morning for seven days. On his return he was desperate for food. I had allowed him plenty of food the day before, but had stopped all food overnight so he was now very hungry. This cat eats every bowl of food as if it would be his last meal, so now he had to catch up! He was pleased to see me and I was again able to pick him up and place him into the large cage without incident. I stroked him and rubbed him and gave him a kiss and much to my surprise, he purred in appreciation! He had not taken a grudge against me for his latest visit to the Vet, he was happy to be home and to see a friendly face. He did not want me to leave him so I stayed with him until he seemed settled. It was only 10 days since he came to us, an abandoned, timid, defensive, suffering and no doubt a scared little cat, but now he was purring and begging to be stroked and kissed. What a dramatic change... “See what a little love can do?”

The next morning as instructed I had to give him 2 pills. I would normally just pick up a cat, hold him like a baby, open his mouth and put the pills in, problem solved, but in this instance, I did not wish to upset him, so decided I would give him some sardines and hide the pills in that. Fortunately they were very small pills and true to his habit of scoffing his food, he ate the sardines and did not even notice the pills, so they went down as prescribed. I decided to leave the cage door open as he seemed so good and see if he would venture out. He didn’t, however very early in the morning, or should I say, very late in the night, we heard crashing and banging. He had decided to come out and explore but had managed to knock a vase from the windowsill, as well as a Pyrex dish left on the kitchen worktop. Both had fallen and smashed, so the place was in chaos. I found Bobby hiding behind the clock on the windowsill but before I could reach for him he made his own way back to his cage and retreated to his ‘cave’. He felt safer in his ‘hidey-hole’, but how he managed to jump down from the worktop and move across the kitchen floor which was absolutely covered with broken glass and not injure himself, I do not know, but he seemed OK and was soon back to asking to be cuddled and he was even purring! Two Verwood school visits for Verwood Mayor.

Cllr Shaw received a warm welcome from the Headteacher Mrs JM Green and the children who were very excited to meet the Mayor. Working together to make Verwood and Three Legged Cross Dementia Friendly

n June, the Verwood and Three Legged Cross Dementia Friendly Community Association (VDFCA) held their launch event at Crane Valley Golf Club. Creating a dementia friendly community is a great initiative from the Alzheimer’s Society. The aim is to support local communities to ensure that people living with dementia and their carers feel understood, valued and able to contribute to local activities. They can feel isolated as there is quite a stigma attached even though they still have so much to give. Like all members of the community, we want them to feel valued and welcomed by local businesses and voluntary groups. Part of this is helping more people understand about dementia and get some simple tips about enhancing communication. This was one of the aims of the launch event. There was a photography competition entitled ‘Living well with dementia.’ The winning photograph is pictured here and will appear on the new information leaflet. The winner was presented with a hamper donated by Morrisons supermarket in Verwood. VDFCA have a number of priorities: • Increasing community membership (If you are interested email: info@vdfca.com)

n recent years there has been a revolution in the way we buy and listen to music. Thanks to new technologies we are now able to play the music we love wherever, and whenever, we want to hear it. With so much emphasis on the streaming of music from services such as Spotify, iTunes and Tidal, the use of minidisks, cassettes and CDs now seems strangely oldfashioned. After all, when you can stream everything you could ever wish to hear direct to your mobile phone, tablet or laptop, who needs a physical format? In spite of all this ingenious and accessible technology, it seems many of us actually prefer to do it the “old school” way. Collecting vinyl records is one of the most surprising trends of the 21st century and fans cite the “authenticity” of analogue sound, the

tactile quality of vinyl and the availability of album cover art and liner notes as reasons why they prefer vinyl recordings to digital music files or CDs. STARTING YOUR COLLECTION Many vinyl enthusiasts start out by taking on someone else’s collection, often in the form of a gift or inheritance from a family member. Chances are that these records will not be rare items, but they will at least provide the basis for a collection. Car boot sales, charity shops, record fairs and specialist vinyl stores are the best places to start digging around for additional records, and you might even come across a rare release as you browse. Once you’ve acquired a few records, you’ll need to decide how to play them. Vintage equipment can be hard to repair if there’s a problem, so most collectors opt for a modern, portable player (£50 - £100) or a modern turntable that can be linked to a computer (from £80 - £120). HOW WILL I KNOW IF A RECORD IS VALUABLE? As with any collectable item, rarity is the main driver for pushing up value. Certain packaging characteristics, such as foil-stamp numbering on the jacket (001/500), different coloured pressings, misprints or famous or controversial images/text can add to the value. Records that have been withdrawn or censored should also be on

the collector’s radar, as this indicates that fewer records will have been sold. HOW DO I BUILD UP MY COLLECTION? Online sites recommended by collectors include Classic UK 45s – which specialises in 45 rpm releases from the ’50s and ‘60s; Planet Earth Records (an online record store with thousands of rare vinyl records) and discogs. com – where you can buy records at relatively low cost and exchange information with other vinyl fans. Record Fairs are great places to browse and chat with other enthusiasts. Go to www. recordfairsuk.co.uk to check dates of fairs taking place in your area. DON’T FORGET CONTEMPORARY VINYL It’s easy to focus on vintage collections and forget that today’s artists are releasing tracks (or re-releasing past work) on vinyl. New Care Company set to create 50 local jobs

new business providing home care to help elderly people continue to live independently in their own homes is launching in East Dorset and Blandford. Home Instead Senior Care will care for clients across a wide area including Wimborne, Verwood, Ringwood, Blandford and surrounding areas. The face behind the business is Weymouth born Caroline Flay who is looking to create 50 new caring jobs in the area.

Caroline (34) has worked in the care sector all her life; her interest began when she worked as a care assistant in a residential home for children with learning disabilities right after college. She recalls, “I have always wanted to care for people ever since I was a young girl. I remember when I

first started caring and I learnt the importance of proper care and how to look after the whole person. I was born to be in care.” Caroline worked in a variety of residential settings for both children and adults with learning disabilities before moving into an operations management role in domiciliary care in Dorset. As Caroline gained more experienced in her caring roles, her jobs gradually became more desk based and eventually, she began looking for a new challenge. illside School recently won 2 Scooter Pods. (A device for parking children’s scooters). A “Big Pedal” competition run by Sustrans and East Dorset District Council was held to see who had the most children travelling to school by scooter in one day. Hillside won one pod for the most children and a bonus pod for getting more than 100 in that day! The Town’s Mayor, Mrs Susan Shaw, visited the school to officially hand over the pods and helped to judge, along with the school’s Headteacher Mr Jeremy Harrison and Rachel AlcockHodgson, a member of the Sustrans team, a “Bling Your Scooter” competition.

hildren of Hillside supported local families by bringing in 100s of tinned and packaged foods to their annual Harvest Festival held in Verwood Methodist Church. The donated food will go to the Trussell Trust which runs food banks providing food to local families in financial need. Various year groups created songs, poems and raps on the Harvest theme, performing them to fellow students and their proud parents, whilst Year 4 students delivered the readings. Portrait of a Local Artist Wildlife in Dorset regularly inspires the artwork of Tanya Hinton, who lives in Gillingham. “I collect driftwood from beaches near Bridport including Eype,” says Tanya, who has lived in Dorset since she was 17 years of age. “I also gather wood from old houses - I was recently given twelve 17th century doors. Various dumps and skips can provide some lovely finds, too. “I love the county’s varied and rugged landscape and how unchanged many parts are; it’s still a scene from a Thomas Hardy novel.” Over the past few years Tanya has been producing unique paintings on wood that she has discovered washed-up on beaches, buried in gardens and reclaimed from old buildings. Each piece of wood offers wonderful possibilities: the sea-worn textures, grain patterns and old, flaking paint might suggest misty landscapes, rippled water and other settings. Tanya paints creatures which enhance each background and which she feels are appropriate to the wood. These beautifully painted animals and birds each have an individuality and detailed expressive features. Tanya was born and brought up in Berkshire, living on the banks of the Thames. Her extensive experience and skill as a painter dates back to her childhood, when she would carefully paint the faces and detailed costumes of figures for her father’s world-renowned model soldier business. Under his guidance, Tanya learnt about handling paint, colour mixing and attention to detail at a very early age. Since then Tanya has always been involved in creative work: painting, ceramics and as an artist’s model.
