f like me, you’re a keen gardener, then you probably find that this time of year is one of the best for gardening in a strange kind of way. Spring is just arouind the corner but everything is still pretty dormant and bare especially the lawn and hedges which haven’t started growing yet thank goodness! So it gives you time to think about what needs to be cut back, cleared, pruned, reshaped etc etc. My list is growing daily of course! We had a huge horse chestnut lopped last year which created a lot more light and it was definitely appreciated by the shrubs below. If there are some pretty big gardening jobs in your garden that need to be done, trees lopped or just a jolly good garden spring clean then have a look at our ‘Local Business Directory on page 50’. And if your finances feel a

Speaking of spring building work, our resident nuthatch is already building its layer of mud around the opening of our nestbox.The idea was that it was for blue tits or great tits but the nuthatch seems to have commandeered it again this year! PAST and PRESENT Corner of Margards Lane and Horton Way
D
emolished in 1960, this house and workshop stood on the corner of Margards Lane and Horton Way. From the early 1890s it was home to Charles and Fanny Hibberd and family who had moved there from Bishopstone, Wiltshire. A granddaughter of the Hibberds, born 1921, who used to enjoy childhood visits has given these reminiscences. “I don’t remember the cottage having the part joined onto it with the tiled roof, maybe it was added later. January 2017 The tinned roof outhouse was where granny did the washing, plucked and prepared chickens and cleaned and hung chitterlings (Prepared food usually made from the small intestines of a pig).
Grandad was disabled and walked with a crutch as one of his legs was shorter than the other. He was a Master Boot and Shoemaker and all the farm workers in the area came to him to have their boots made. The window on the left of the old photo was where his shop and workshop were. His son Sidney Hibberd’s farm was at the back of the cottage but it didn’t have a name that I know of. We just used to call it “Uncle Sid’s Farm!” The bungalow which replaced the house and workshop is situated in a very pleasant and still rural part of Verwood and despite being situated at a crossroads, all of these roads are still unmade tracks so it is remarkably quiet.

ith winter upon us the Rangers at Moors Valley are asking for help to keep the Gruffalo’s child snug when the snow falls fast and the wind blows wild. They want everyone to join them in knitting a huge scarf to keep her warm on her winter adventure. This year the Park is planning lots more Gruffalo surprises but the Gruffalo’s Child needs to stay warm until they happen. “Families across the country love Julia Donaldson’s ever-popular storybooks. They all know that the Gruffalo’s Child ignores her father’s warning and bravely tiptoes out into the snow in search of the big bad mouse,” said Countryside Interpretation Ranger Katie Davies. “We want to help her on her travels. Verwood Choral Society news
erwood Choral Society performed a lovely concert of Christmas music and carols to a packed audience at Verwood Methodist Church early in December last year. The programme included lots of old favourites as well as some new Christmas music with tunes as diverse as the beautiful Christmas Lullaby by John Rutter and The Twelve Days of Christmas with audience participation. The concert raised the grand sum of £765 which was donated to the Youth Cancer
trust which provides support and holidays for young people living with cancer. They also performed at several events in the local area over Christmas and took a wellearned break until mid January. Rehearsals have now commenced for this year’s June concert. New members, both ladies and gents are always welcome and the choir meets on Monday evenings at the Parish Church of St Michaels in Verwood from 7.30pm – 9.00pm. ith spring just around the corner, the nature reserve is full of activity with winter visitors feeding up in preparation for their departure whilst breeding residents gather nesting materials and get ready for a flurry of courtship. Lapwing will begin to display over Ibsley Water, their brilliant ‘peewit’ calls being instantly recognizable along with their wavering flip-floppy flight pattern. However the best courtship display to look out for is that of the elegant great crested grebe. In their elaborate display, both birds mirror the dance of the other, rising up out of the water and shaking their heads before offering up gifts of weed. The bittern should still be around until the end of March, with the reed beds in front of Ivy North hide being the best place to watch out for this secretive bird as it moves silently through the water in search of fish. Osprey will be migrating through at this time as well,

whilst if we’re lucky, the first of the sand martins will also be returning. As the temperature slowly rises, the welcoming rays of sunshine are enjoyed by the first butterflies of the year; these include brimstone, comma and peacock. Reptiles will also be tempted out by the warmth of the sun and it is a good time of year to spot adders and grass snakes alongside the edge of the paths as they are still quite slow and sluggish after the long cold winter. On the ground the leaves of many plants are pushing through the soil, including lots of wild arum. Arum is a fairly common and widespread plant with a distinctive flower spike pushing up inside a cup-like leafy structure. It has many alternative old country names including ‘cuckoo pint’ and ‘lords and ladies’. It is, perhaps, better known from the stage once the bright red berries have formed. As this is the main ‘cross over’ period from winter into
spring, it is always worth a visit to the reserve with a pair of binoculars, or a camera, to see those preparing to leave and those preparing to nest. Why not join Reserves Officer Bob Chapman for a walk in search of our Winter Birds on Sunday 5th or Thursday 16th February, or visit a little later for a Finchfest in search of flocks of brambling, siskin and redpoll on Thursday 2nd March. aving rattled on about autonomous and semiautonomous cars, now it is time to overview a state-of-the-art implementation in the new 3008 SUV. This is a car well ahead of the curve. The 3008 is a vehicle bristling with the latest technology and its heart lies within the i-Cockpit as our picture shows. The visual array includes the main instrument panel at 12.3” wide, with an 8” iPad-like central display, controlling a very wide range of functions, dependent upon the model specification and any options deliberately purchased. Now to make your choice of which options to implement - or not. The range is dazzling - especially on highly specified cars. I suspect Peugeot will include an explanatory manual with the car - a demonstration mode gives a good overview of just what might be essential or useful to you. Suffice to say, it will take a while to learn where to find what you want to do - for instance the instrument display was intrusively bright when driving on dark winter roads, but finding the instrument dimmer evaded me completely - yet a Peugeot employee showed me how in a second! The lesson is, be prepared to budget a while to familiarise yourself with what can be tailored to your taste, and to then set the car how you want it before you ever turn a wheel. First of all we look at the mandatory safetyenhancing functions, which can be described as fully autonomous. These naturally include the familiar standard braking and stability functions (ABS, EBD, DSC) but in this car are extended by always-on SOS in case of accident or breakdown because a dedicated SIM
card is built in - thus independent of the usual reliance upon communicating through your own smart-phone. Automatic emergency braking control will mitigate or avoid a crash during any moment of inattention or misjudgement - this feature has yet to become mandatory. It includes pedestrian, car and immovable object recognition. Driver attention warning is similarly important and standard across the range. Semi-autonomous items which can be modified or cancelled include adaptive cruise control (something which I believe needs to be mandatory), speed limit detection, lane-keeping aid and blind spot detection. Other options include LED headlamps which auto-dip auto-swivel and autoset to compensate for loaded attitude, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera and auto-park in vertical or horizontal mode - accelerate and brake remaining driver responsibility. Add to this a fully-featured suite of satellite navigation via the touch-screen, an excellent DAB radio with further

megawatt sound an option by ‘Focal’, USB, WiFi and bluetooth connection. The climate control is fully customisable including a wide range of cabin ambiences including scents, mood lighting and finally driving instrument selection. This latter is one of the primary reasons to become au fait with all the options before ever driving off. The type of help that we are continuously needing are for Minibus Drivers and Escorts which takes about one and a half hours per trip and Helpers at the Bandhall for a few hours whenever possible.

When did you last mishear someone’s name, fail to follow the plot of a TV drama or ask someone to repeat something they said, two or three times?
A
ccording to the website NHS Choices, there are approximately four million people in the UK with hearing loss who could benefit from wearing hearing aids but who either ignore their condition or refuse to do anything about it. So why is it so hard for us to admit that our hearing is deteriorating? As a society we have become much more compassionate about aging issues such as memory loss and dementia, but sadly there is still a tendency to regard age-related deafness as something of a joke, inspiring caricatures of crotchety senior citizens with ear trumpets. Human beings often use humour to defuse their fears and it may be that we make light of deafness because the prospect of losing our hearing scares us. Hearing loss can be profoundly isolating, leading sufferers to lose confidence and become withdrawn. Not only that, research has shown that it can lead to cognitive impairment and depression. Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that some people try to conceal their hearing
problems (although it’s not usually a secret to friends and family, who have to deal with the consequences). Unfortunately, some people remain in denial until they are too old to adapt to using a hearing aid. Hearing experts agree that the sooner you start to use a hearing aid, the more you’ll get out of it. Many people are put off from wearing aids because they believe it will make them look old, but modern devices are a great improvement on those that were available even a decade ago. Choosing a hearing aid Hearing aids are powered by tiny batteries and nowadays almost all models are digital, rather than analogue. You can choose between several different types, depending on your personal tastes and needs. The Behind-the-Ear (BTE) model does what it says: resting behind the ear, it transmits sound through either an earmould or a small, soft tip that enters the ear canal. In-the-Ear (ITE) sits in the ear canal and the shell of the ear, while In-the-Canal (ITC) fits inside the ear canal with its
working parts in the earmould. The Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) fits deeper into your ear canal than an ITC aid. You can obtain hearing aids through the NHS (although the ITE, ITC and CIC models mentioned above are not standard issue). You’ll have a wider choice if you buy privately, but this can be a more costly option. Audiology specialist Louise Hart from Action on Hearing Loss says: “The NHS can procure high-quality digital hearing aids. ong captivating us with their beauty, individuality and scent, for centuries flowers have been a tradition at almost every human celebration and ceremony. Similarly, conveying messages with flowers has been a popular form of botanical code that can be found in art, literature and religion. The lily was featured by artists during Renaissance times to represent the purity of Christ and the Virgin, and in literature, Shakespeare often used flowers for increased emotional emphasis and meaning in his plays. The Victorian artists known as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood resurrected the lily in several of their wellknown religious paintings such as Rossetti’s The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1848), while Millais borrowed from Shakespeare when he painted his famous work Ophelia (1852), using flowers mentioned in Hamlet for his background whose meanings would not only have been clear to their Victorian viewer, but also to Shakespeare’s audience 300 years earlier. It was the Victorians who truly embraced flower symbolism and elevated it into an art form which they called floriography.
During the sexually repressed Victorian era, using ‘the language of flowers’ made it easier to convey a sensitive message, via a bouquet or with flowers printed on a greetings card, than expressing it verbally. A well-known modern example of this is the red rose that remains a traditional way to say ‘I love you’ on St Valentine’s Day. However, there are actually many other flowers that also offer declarations of love, including the red tulip (passionate love), anemone (unfading love), gladiolus (love at first sight) and the self-evident forgetme-not. These little bouquets so beloved by the Victorians were known as ‘tussiemussies’ - a term that dates from the 1400s and was used to describe a bunch of sweet-smelling flowers and herbs that had symbolic meaning. Such bouquets were a necessity in medieval times where living conditions were fairly unsanitary. Carrying fragrant flower tussie-mussies or nosegays (the word ‘gay’ means ‘ornament’ in old English) was not only a good way to disguise bad smells, it was also considered essential to wellbeing as flowers were believed to ward off disease.
Becoming fluent in floriography is not an easy task, as many plants have more than one meaning and different cultures place their own interpretation on them. To complicate matters, the colour of a flower can change its meaning - for example, giving a yellow rose means friendship, while a pink rose signifies affection. A dictionary is therefore a must! It is believed that the first floriographical dictionary to be published was Dictionnaire du Language des Fleurs by Joseph Hammer-Pugstall in 1809. The Duchess of Cambridge paid homage to floriography when she chose her wedding bouquet. Sticking to the Royal tradition of using only white flowers, she carried lily of the valley (a return to happiness), sweet william (gallantry), hyacinth (constancy in love), ivy (fidelity) and myrtle (marriage). The myrtle is said to have come from a bush grown from a sprig in a nosegay presented to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert’s grandmother. This Valentine’s Day, instead of the usual red roses, why not try resurrecting a sweet and thoughtful tradition by giving your mister or missus a mussie? Just ensure you avoid basil, candytuft and dogbane, as you would be sending a message of hatred, indifference and deceit!

onday morning panics 8-8.30am is often a rather stressful period in my house. Arguments over brushing teeth (my son) compete with tears over forgotten homework (my daughter). One thing I do have sorted is making it easy for them to find their uniform so they can get dressed. I use a rubber band to attach two clothes hangers together, one of which is the type with clips. Pants get hung from one clip, tights or socks from the other, and the rest of the uniform goes on the other hanger. Simple. My next mission is to teach them to put their PJs under their pillow, rather than dumping them on the floor. We’ve been working on that one for a while now, with no luck. Hair brushing is a source of tantrums the world over. The Wet Brush may save a fair few tears (theirs and

If (like me) you’re hopeless at remembering to remove your child’s nail varnish on a Sunday evening, you might want to try Nailmatic Kids Nail Polish. Children seem to have an innate ability to lose things. If you can’t be bothered to spend hours sewing

A record £10,000 smile for a child
n East Dorset based golf club has pulled out all the stops in its efforts to return its highest ever charity donation. All three sections of the Verwood based Crane Valley Golf Club; men’s, ladies’ and seniors’, pooled their resources which, including support from the Carpet Barn, combined to raise just over £10,000 for ‘A Smile for a Child’
in sport and mobility. He said: ‘The charity prefers to equal match - up to the tune of £5,000 - monies already raised for any deserving project. Chichen Itza By Solange Hando
L
isted by UNESCO and the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza claims the largest Maya site on the Yucatan peninsula. From their mysterious origins around 3000 BC to the Spanish conquest in the early 1500s, the Maya were never an empire but a collection of autonomous city-states with a diverse culture and people who all left their mark across the ancient sites. Great architects, mathematicians and astrologers, skilled craftsmen, the Maya enjoyed their golden age during the classic era, around AD 250900, though Chichen Itza continued to flourish into the next millennium and beyond as new settlers arrived. Named after the Itza tribe at the ‘the mouth of the well’, the stone city scatters its atmospheric remains deep in the rainforest. There’s much to see on its 15 square kilometres but the great stepped pyramid of Kukulcan casts its spell at first sight. Rising to a height of 24 metres, the four sides represent the cardinal points, each one with a stairway of 91 steps, the number of days between equinox and solstice. Add all the steps and one more to reach the top platform and that makes 365,
the solar year. But the magic doesn’t stop there. During the equinox, a strange zigzag shadow creeps down the north stairway and for the Maya, this was the ‘feathered serpent god’ slithering down from the sky. They were at ease with the duality of the world, life death, day night, earth sky, hence the feathered serpent and the carvings of birds alongside jaguars and snakes. ‘Clap your hands,’ suggest the guides and suddenly the echo turns into a spine-chilling squeak, the call of the quetzal, they say, the Maya’s sacred bird. The sound travels far and one can imagine the high priest invoking the gods from the pyramid, watched by the 20,000 strong crowd gathered below. But in the Maya world, religious rituals were not confined to the great pyramids. Chichen Itza boasts one of the largest surviving ball courts where warriors proved their worth, throwing heavy rubber balls through stone rings, eight metres above the ground, without using their hands. The rings were shaped like serpents, the high priest watched and on occasions, the winner would be sacrificed, for only the best should be offered to the gods. The sacred well had a
similar use, a 60 metre wide sacrificial sink hole said to be the ‘womb of Mother Earth’. The Maya’s written history was almost entirely destroyed by conquerors but stone friezes and carvings say it all. Among the many archaeological sites in this part of the world, Chichen Itza is unique for its similarities to Tula, the centre of the Toltec empire some 1,300 km away. The connection remains a mystery but both elements fuse beautifully, from the Temples of Warriors, Eagles, Venus and more to the striking complex of 1,000 pillars, the market where the slightest whisper can be heard across the square or the snail-shaped observatory used to study the sky. By late morning, when day trippers arrive from Cancun, stall holders set up their colourful ware in the main alleyway, Mayan masks jostling with mini-pyramids, hammocks, silver bangles and toy jaguars which roar as you walk past. But on this vast enticing site, there’s always a quiet place where you can stretch out your hand and almost touch the past. There, nothing disturbs the peace but the occasional gust of wind or the distant call of jungle birds.

Portrait of a Local Artist “I love the character of the Dorset landscape, especially the coastal landscape and some fine gardens,” says artist Juliet Wood, who has fond memories of childhood holidays in Swanage. Recently Juliet has visited Dorset twice, staying in Martinstown village “to draw and paint the beautiful churchyard”. “What most inspires my work is the interaction of people, whether in an urban or coastal situation, and the atmosphere in a subject,” says Juliet. Juliet studied at St Albans School of Art and the Slade with William Coldstream, followed by a study year near Rome. Her 30 year teaching career in London, Marlborough, and Swindon School of Art and Design focused on life drawing and painting. Juliet is an oil painter, and also uses oil pastels. Portraiture has always been part of an ongoing commitment to the expression of human life. She is well established throughout Britain, with portraits in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Royal Society of Edinburgh, and many other public and private collections. Both her portraits and thematic paintings based on drawings vary from the small and intimate to the large and complex. Raising her five children contributed positively to both aspects of work, giving a deep understanding of human dynamics. A major Swindon project to encourage interest in visual art involved touring her series of paintings, Alone and Together, Brunel’s People to venues in Swindon and Southwark throughout 2013–14, launched by a public drawing event. She says of the paintings, “We are strangers while I draw.
