Dear Readers,

n the last issue I wrote about today’s smartphones and how the majority of us find them invaluable. But can you recall the original data transmission system - the Telex, which was developed during the 2nd World War? Telex was used as a secure and reliable long distance communication and surprisingly it is still used today as it is legally secure with guaranteed transmission and also relatively un-hackable. I’m not sure how many of today’s digital transmission systems and social media platforms can boast all of these benefits - or in fact any of them! On the subject of social media, we have on page 24 an article for Social Networking novices telling us about the most popular ones. Amusingly it seems that as soon as ‘The Parents’ get the hang of the

with best wishes,

current system favoured by youngsters, then they migrate to a new and as yet undiscovered and equally unfathomable one! Personally I find texting is still my favourite since it is short, direct and can give the offspring plenty of time to think up an excuse as to why something hasn’t been done yet! As I write it’s only a week till ‘Flaming June’ - hopefully! Fortunately the weather is definitely starting to warm up and we may even hit 20 deg in a few days! See our What’s On pages 26 and 28 for lots of events this summer. Finally if you need a job done or want to treat yourself or a loved one AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 46 and save yourself time, fuel and most importantly - money!

he photo above shows the two Chapels in Manor Road, the one on the right built in 1877 and the one on the left in 1906. In front stands the commemorative oak planted for the Coronation of George VI in 1937, which was felled in 2006 during road alterations and a replacement planted on Ferrett Green. Shortly after the original Church School was established at Church Hill in 1847, the non-conformist villagers

started their own classes which in 1880 became the “British School” held in the 1877 chapel in Manor Road. (On the right in the photo above) After the adjacent chapel was built in 1906 it occupied the whole premises and continued as a County Senior School and later additional primary school until a replacement was opened in Hillside Road in 1967. The 1877 chapel is now the Verwood Library.

e are in the midst of summer here at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve and it’s the perfect time of year to come and explore this family friendly reserve. The trees are in full leaf and the busy chirping of birds fills the air. No matter where your destination, be it over looking one of the lakes or the peaceful setting of the woodland hide there is always a flurry of activity as adult birds are adhering to the beck and call of their demanding young. On Ivy Lake the tern chicks will be taking their first leap away from the comfort of their nest whilst the great crested grebe chicks with their black and white humbug faces will be becoming more independent, now too big to catch a ride on the back of the parent bird. On the shoreline of Ibsley Water oystercatcher, lapwing and little ringed plover chicks will be taking their next steps and venturing further from their parents. Whilst looking around the

reserve why not take some time out and sit in our tranquil meadow and let the sounds of nature relax you, from chirping grasshoppers to adventurous beetles scurrying up and down the blades of grass. If this sounds like your idea of a treat why not join us for our International Meadows Day event, Bugs, Bees and Butterflies on Saturday 1st July. Please telephone 01425 472760 to book your place. Throughout the summer months our volunteers are walking weekly transect lines, recording the butterfly numbers around the reserve. Species to look out for include red admiral, meadow brown, speckled wood, peacock, comma and marbled white. Back on the ground toadlets are usually ready to emerge from the lakes at some point in mid-June. These tiny creatures reach a point where they are ready to leave the water but dare not risk drying out and dying in the hot weather, so hold on until a spell of wet weather when they will emerge

on mass – and some years they really do migrate on mass with thousands of the fingernail sized youngsters quite literally covering the footpaths, particularly between the centre and Ivy South Hide, as well as other locations around the reserve. Do be on the look out for them over the next couple of weeks – they are small, very well camouflaged and are easily overlooked until the movement of one catches your eye and you realise all of a sudden you are surrounded! The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

Viewed From My W indow A small selection of short stories written by Patricia Oliver from Horton near Wimborne, describing the ups and downs of caring for feral cats over the years with photos by J Santana-Martin.

O

Lost: Babes in the Wood-part 2

ur little rescued kitten Tinker had been pregnant twice, but we had not seen any sign of the kittens, and four days after the second litter was born we found her in the middle of the road, she had been killed. We called the RSPCA and told them a mother cat is has been killed and the kittens are now 4 days old and we do not know for certain where they are. No one came, no one ‘phoned me back. We were on our own and had to find the kittens. We cleared the undergrowth near to the storm drain and armed with a torch shone it into the storm drain.....it was full of cobwebs and no sign of the kittens. If they had been there, the cobwebs would have been brushed away with the activity. Now what? Where could they be? Armed with loppers to cut low branches and undergrowth we searched along the adjoining property looking and listening as we went trying to find the kittens. Time was not on our side, they would die if we did not find them. Over the other side of the road was a woodland. The ground was always under water in the winter, and remained boggy for the rest of the year and not a suitable place to have kittens, but Tinker was killed crossing the road, so maybe they would be there? I went into the house adjoining this woodland and told them my predicament asking them to keep an eye out for the kittens, especially as the first litter was now 3 months old and should be asking for food. We looked along the road for any sign of a track that Tinker may have made if she was constantly coming and going, but nothing! Absolutely nothing! No sign at all that she had been over the road to this woodland. Now what could we do? We were at a loss and we went home, heavy hearted. We felt we had tried our best.

Now we had to bury our little beautiful Tinker and shed the inevitable tear. We set a cat trap at the place where Tinker would come for food in the hope that the first litter of kittens would soon be hungry and may follow their mother’s tracks to find food. There has been no sign of them, they are lost, maybe in the woods, or the wooded undergrowth, but now we will never know. We felt we had lost not just Tinker, but possibly six kittens as well! We were devastated, but honestly felt we had done all that we could. Tinker

Monday the RSPCA called back, we explained to a different inspector the problem and she said that Tinker had probably lost her first litter, that is why she got pregnant again so soon and now the only thing we could do was listen for the babies as they would cry very loudly asking for Mum to feed them. Sunday night had seen heavy rain and these poor kittens would have been cold and wet as well as hungry and would now surely die. We walked the undergrowth again and listened. We needed it to be extremely quiet, but because of the speeding traffic and the calling birds, we heard nothing and saw nothing. We had to accept that they were all certainly lost to us. Heartbroken we wrote Tinker’s epitaph on her gravestone in our little graveyard, which reads - ‘Dear Little Tinker, Forever a Free Spirit.’ The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £15.00 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on: 01202 826244. Any proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

Europe proved to be like hens teeth - any charging points were superficially incompatible with this car (fast-charge CHAdeMO connection) and a Euro-cable connector had not been supplied to me for a slower charge. The ‘home’ charging cable supplied managed to consistently trip my garage circuit breaker before we left, and the only CHAdeMO charger available locally wanted me to pay £6.00 for a charge to last up to 30 miles and I reasoned this equated to the cost of petrol over the same distance. So, across Europe primarily by petrolpower. More about the car. A 2-litre petrol engine with auto gearbox runs part time to drive the front wheels and charge the traction batteries which also drive both front and rear wheels, even having the luxury of an electric switchable diff lock. The drive train computer does what it deduces is best in any situation and this works very well! Then there is a large and spacious 5-seat leather-upholstered body, enough instruments and menus to outfox a teenage nerd, entertainment by DAB and that ultimate evil of all evils, ApplePlay. It looks really classy within and without. Nit-picking I’d say the slightly frenetic sat-nav needs to block the sun, and I’d substitute the imitation wood-grain inserts around the car with the piano black inserts used in the instru-

ment panel - looks much more classy. On my 4Hs variant, all bells and whistles were provided in terms of anti-accident braking, blind spot vehicle sensors, lane departure warning, active cruise, ESP, 360 degree sensors and so on. Reassuringly safe with maniacal UK drivers around. Once Scrooge had become reconciled to frequently stopping for petrol, it became delightful. I can report 656 miles in one day stopping every 250 miles for comfort breaks, fuel and food as dictated by SWMBO. Thus, I was able to finish the day feeling quite fresh. My calculations later showed that despite cruising at 82-ish, I had nailed 36mpg and consider this a wonderful achievement from a small petrol engine driving a large 4x4. I had only once found a CHAdeMO charger at Cologne (free!) but this charge lasted only 18 electrically driven miles at high speed so I didn’t bother with any more external charges. This was a simply brilliant car, plenty of acceleration when required with over 200bhp and superb torque from the combined petrol and traction batteries. I was very surprised to find this was my first really positive impression of any hybrid - this very thoughtful implementation of the species hits every target. It would comprise all of my short-list if shuttle-commuting between roadside chargers. It aces long-distance too. Finally, the ownership financials are simply unbeatable.

hile expecting a standard appraisal of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, an entirely unexpected major family problem caused myself and wife to need to cross Europe rapidly. Obviously, a flight with hire-car was quickest but the only short notice flights bore horrendous prices, went to logistically difficult airports and at highly antisocial times. So, why not use the Outlander PHEV? The Outlander PHEV is a petrol-driven hybrid with traction batteries aided by a plug-in charger, it’s forte being absurdly high economy in urban drives, but apparently not so frugal as a high-speed sprinter - or so I was told. However, I already knew the Outlander as very comfortable, quiet and with good handling. The commanding driving position would enable anticipatory driving on Autobahns. I reasoned that despite using petrol frugally, I would also be able to rapid-charge the traction batteries from the mains electricity supply wherever I stopped, thus saving fossil fuel. Good in theory, in practice impossible. Charging points in

Five Minute Fixes Nails Inc’s Gel One Coat polish delivers, as the saying goes, what it says on the tin. You get a glossy, gel-like finish, in just one coat. It lasts for ages, particularly if you have time to apply a base coat and top coat. Even on its own, it should stay chip free for a few days. Perfect for a quick pedicure to match your new summer sandals, Gel One Coat also contains biotin to help strengthen your nails. If you’re looking for a suits-all summery pink, try Portobello Mews. Exclusive to Marks and Spencer, Gel One Coat polishes cost £13 each. See www.marksandspencer.com.

The full Mineral Air Airbrush Foundation System comes with a choice of seven shades of foundation and a liquid blush. At £114.99, it’s certainly not cheap, but at least you don’t need to use a separate primer or concealer. It’s exclusive to www.idealworld. tv.

The phrase ‘flawless’ gets rather overused in the beauty industry, but in this case it really is well-deserved. The Mineral Air Airbrush Foundation System sprays a light mist of foundation to give you an even, smooth base coverage in seconds. The foundation is mixed with air, so you only end up using a few drops, meaning skin doesn’t feel too suffocated. It is quite easy to overdo it, so you’ll want to aim to build up colour gradually.

masks. 100% natural, the masks are formulated with ingredients such as exfoliating organic hemp husks, kaolin clay, activated charcoal and essential oils. They only need to be left on for five minutes to give you a deep, gentle clean. Skin feels softer, smoother and fresher. See www.optiat. com.

Natural skincare brand Optiat has recently brought out a new collection of clay

Great results with minimum effort by Kate Duggan 93% of testers saw a reduction in lines and wrinkles in just two weeks. It only takes a minute to massage the serum into your skin before bed each night. The retinol helps to boost cell renewal and freshen skin. I was really impressed with the results; my skin felt softer, plumper and less tired looking within just a few days. I have quite sensitive skin so can’t always use retinol creams, but this was gentle enough not to cause any irritation. (I did get a couple of spots in the first week, but they soon disappeared.) While it isn’t an instant fix, you’ll reap the rewards from Murad’s Retinol Youth Renewal Serum pretty quickly nonetheless.

Lightly massage Green People’s Organic Homme 7 Active Fix Repair Serum around your face and neck, and under your eyes, for a wealth of benefits. Ingredients have been clinically proven to reduce wrinkles and firm skin. Rich in antioxidants, the serum helps to fight free radicals, so protects against aging. It also helps to hydrate the skin and absorbs easily, so doesn’t leave skin feeling greasy. The serum is suitable for all skin types, including those prone to irritation, acne, eczema and other skin complaints. It’s £17 from www. greenpeople.co.uk.

Changes Our books this month are all about change, from shifting viewpoints to rewriting history.

Book Reviews

Stickertopia, The Flower Garden – Mitchell Beazley Walk into any bookstore and you’re likely to see at least one shelf dedicated to grown-up colouring books. So it’s not too much of a surprise that sticker books are having a similar grown-up makeover. This one includes 30 garden illustrations, from Klimt’s garden path to the butterfly garden in Bronx Zoo. You can add extra colour and detail with stickers of flowers, leaves, butterflies and birds. It’s surprisingly relaxing, and there’s something rather satisfying about putting your own mark on the designs. All Our Wrong Todays – Elan Mastai No one expects Tom Barren to amount to much. They certainly don’t expect him to go back in time and completely change life as they know it. But that’s what happens. In Tom’s world 2016 looks rather different than it does to us. The discovery of a clean, almost effortless form of energy back in the 60s has made the world something of a utopia. But then Tom becomes the first time traveller, and accidently rewrites history. When he gets back to 2016, everything has changed.

Take Courage, Anne Brontë and the Art of Life – Samantha Ellis Anne is often seen as the ‘other Brontë’. Most of us would struggle to remember the names of either of her books. In part this is because of the way she’s usually portrayed – quiet, reserved and, well, less interesting than her siblings. Ellis goes to great lengths to show that this was far from the case. Anne’s novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, was, in many ways, more subversive and ahead of its time than those of her sisters. As Ellis talks us through her research, a very different Anne Brontë starts to emerge. Take Courage is far from a dry clinical biography; Ellis is clearly indignant at Anne’s treatment and the book is a real pleasure to read. Good Me, Bad Me – Ali Land Can a child brought up to be a killer change her fate? That’s the question posed in this gripping psychological thriller. Milly is in foster care with a new family and a new name. All she wants is a fresh start. But Milly’s mum is a serial killer, and Milly was the one

who put her behind bars. As the trial approaches, Milly has to decide what she wants from life, and how far she’s willing to go to get it. The Art of Contribution – Ann Skinner The Art of Contribution aims to help people live a more meaningful life. Life coach Ann Skinner shares her advice for making a positive impact on the world. The book is broken up into short, easily digestible chapters. They focus on lessons that Skinner has learnt herself, from embracing imperfections to contributing not ‘from a place of feeling that some things in the world need fixing, but from a place of wanting to add joy to it’. Homegoing – Yaa Gyasi Homegoing follows the descendants of two African sisters – one sold into slavery, the other married off to a slave trader. We meet warring tribes in Ghana, brutalised slaves on American plantations, men forced into hard labour once slavery has supposedly been outlawed, drug addicts and numerous other characters. Brilliantly written, vivid and, at times, harrowing, this is one of those books you’ll find yourself recommending to anyone who’ll listen.

Face-Agram Or Instabook? The Mature User’s Guide To Social Media by Kate McLelland

Life Begins

N

owadays grandparents are proving a match for their grandchildren when it comes to posting comments and uploading photos to social networking sites such as Facebook. Social media’s fastest growing demographic is older users. When the seniors’ website silversurfers.com recently surveyed over three thousand of its members, it found that 81% of the sample checked their Facebook accounts more than once a day. But what if you haven’t yet ventured into social networking? How do you know where to start? If you’ve always wanted to dip your toe into the social networking pool - but fear you’ll drown in a sea of unfamiliar terms and bizarre practices - here’s a quick guide to three of the most popular platforms: Facebook According to silversurfers. com, Facebook is the platform of choice for the over-50s. Many older users believe that they will get even more value from the site as they grow older. What is Facebook? It’s a free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload videos and images and send messages. Facebook is the most

popular of all social media platforms, so it’s very likely you’ll find someone you know there. On the downside, the site has been criticised for invasive advertising and for being vulnerable to hacking attacks and scams. TwiTTer According to statistics portal Statista, 27% of Twitter users in the UK are aged 45 and over. High profile ‘mature’ users include Donald Trump and Stephen Fry, both of whom have enjoyed a rather volatile relationship with the service. What is Twitter? Twitter is a free-to-use online news and social networking channel where users post and interact with short messages known as ‘tweets’. If you want to find out what the public is thinking on any particular subject, ask Twitter. It’s also a great way to broadcast an opinion and connect with friends’ views, but messages are restricted to 140 characters, so Twitter won’t work for you if you’re the sort of person who likes to send long-winded ‘catchup’ letters in Christmas cards. insTagram Instagram is the fastest growing social media network. It is currently more popular with the younger

generation, but there are signs that older users are starting to catch on. What is Instagram? Instagram is a social networking app created so users can share photos and videos from a smartphone or tablet. It’s a simplified version of Facebook, but with an emphasis on mobile use and visual sharing. Instagram is a quick and easy way to show the world where you are and what you’re doing. On the negative side, you and your friends will only be able to use this app on iPhone and Android phones; because Instagram has been created for mobile phone and tablet users, it doesn’t work as well on a standard computer or laptop. If you’re still feeling confused about which platform to choose, don’t worry. Simply ask around to find out which sites your friends and relatives use. That way if you have any problems finding your way around, you’ll always have someone to help. At first social media may feel like an alien world with its own particular language but once you’ve started, you’ll quickly get the hang of it. Before long you’ll be posting like a pro … or maybe even tweeting like a Trump?

Loving Someone Who Isn’t Good At Loving

By Christina Smith

P

eople who love someone who ‘isn’t good at loving’ can find themselves in an emotional trap. They try so hard to ‘change’ or ‘rescue’ their partner by asking all manner of emotional self-sacrifices. Unfortunately, this only succeeds in stifling their own happiness. People who are trying to ‘awaken the love’ in their partner usually focus on constantly pleasing the other person. This can stifle aspects of themselves which the other criticizes such as; passion, fun, spontaneity, ambition.

traumatic. Taking baby steps towards knowing what you really want from your relationships is the key. What do YOU want? Separation Therapy and CBT helps a person deal with emotional issues. Find more information visit www.allaboutme.email

Another rescuing trait is to be ‘over cheerful,’ to make up for the lack of joy in the partner or relationship. Sometimes this results in parents relying on their children for the emotional joy and support which is lacking in their marriage. Yet all this tends to bring more and more disappointment as nothing ever changes. The abandonment wound allows for such behavior to continue in relationships as it tells us (unconsciously of course) that we do not deserve to be loved, that we are not ‘good enough,’ therefore we must only show our best side to people. The result is a relationship which is unequal, giving away our power to the other person, making us feel powerless. Thinking and behaving like this makes us easy prey for people who have a narcissistic nature. Setting boundaries and being assertive may also be difficult for those in a relationship like this. Changes do not need to be sudden and

Outdoor Joys

The best tech toys to take outside

S

ome of the most entertaining outdoor toys are the simplest, such as the cute Swivel Car (around £22, with lots of firms offering very similar products). It’s a ride-on car with a difference: instead

Swivel Car gyroscopic ride-on car

of pedalling or propelling it with your feet, you swivel the steering wheel and that generates movement. It’s small enough for toddlers and tough enough for big kids and even the odd adult. If you’d rather go for something more traditional, the Cozy Coupe - around £49 - has been a favourite of families for more than 30 years, and the iconic red and yellow version has been joined by dinosaur and police car versions. Complex toys can be fun too, of course. One kind of toy that’s improved dramatically in recent years is the electric car or bike for kids. It’s possible to get a decent trike for less than £40 that delivers 50 minutes of movement between charges, while around the £200 mark you’ll find impressive replicas

BMW i8 replica ride-on car

of grown-up cars such as BMW’s futuristic electric i8. Remember that such vehicles do take a while to charge, so make sure you plug them in the night before you want to use them. If you’d rather not let your child loose behind the wheel but want to give them control of something fun, there’s a huge selection of radio controlled vehicles ranging from the toddler-friendly Little Tykes Tyre Twister (£39) to exceptionally fast scale models of performance cars such as Lamborghinis and Porsches. Even the most expensive of these are much cheaper than they used to be, with top-end models usually coming in well below £70. Radio controlled cars are fun, but radio controlled flying machines are even more fun. You know you’re living in the future when you can walk into your local toy shop and come out with a smartphone-controlled drone helicopter. Drones start at around £20 for basic ones and reach £190 for Star Warsthemed models, and drones with built-in cameras start at around £60. If you want to get serious, you can find a good selection of advanced drones with HD cameras and optical video stabilisers from around £300, rising to over £1,000 for high-end models. One word of warning with drones: their propellers can be sharp and cause injury if they bump into people, so it’s a good idea to look for one with a protective ring around the propellers if you’ll be

Parrot drone

giving it to a child or using it near kids or pets. And there are restrictions on where you can and can’t fly drones, such as in crowded areas or near airports. It’s a good idea to check up on the law before spending any money. There are also concerns over privacy: the neighbours probably won’t appreciate you flying a camera over their garden.

Nerf Do you remember the days N-Strike Mega of potato guns and water pistols? They’ve become a Mastodon lot more sophisticated, with products such as Nerf guns ranging from around £20 to the ridiculously overpowered N-Strike Mega Mastodon (£99), which fires 24 foam darts from a motorised revolving drum. Between it and the super-powered, supersoaking water pistols that have more in common with water cannons than the water pistols you remember from your own childhood, be wary of the weaponry you give your kids because you can be sure you’ll be on the receiving end of the foam darts or freezing cold jets of water.

Time For Tea .

by Catherine Rose

Tea is enjoyed all over the world but the English adopted it as their own around four hundred years ago.

B

elieved to have originated in Southern China, tea drinking dates back to around 3000 BC. However, it didn’t become popular in England until the 17th century, when it was made fashionable by King Charles II and his Portuguese wife Catherine de Braganza, who brought it over to the Royal court from her native country. Coffee houses had recently been established in London and the custom of tea drinking was quickly introduced. Samuel Pepys referred to it in his diary of 1660: ‘…I did send for a cup of tee (a China drink) of which I never had drank before’.

History

The coffee houses also sold loose leaf tea so that women, who did not frequent them, could enjoy it at home. It soon became popular for wives to host tea parties and invite their friends. Tea was very much the privilege of the wealthy. It was expensive to import and seen as a valuable commodity, kept locked inside ornate caddies. Teapots, tea-cups and saucers were prized possessions and there were many different designs

produced during this time. Because it was so expensive, the tea smuggling trade flourished. In 1785, following pressure from tea merchants, the government slashed the high import tax on tea, making it much more affordable to the masses. Thus, tea drinking grew in popularity among the working classes, sparking a debate about whether tea was bad for the health, causing ‘idleness’ and ‘melancholy’ amongst other things. Eventually, alcohol came to be viewed as the far greater evil and working class people were then encouraged to become ‘teetotal’. The concept of afternoon tea is a peculiarly English tradition but tea served with food was only introduced in the mid-19th century by Anna Russell, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner, which in those days was traditionally served quite late in the evening. Soon friends were joining her for ‘afternoon tea’ at her home in Woburn Abbey and, thanks to her frequent trips to London, the custom grew to become a fashionable social event amongst the upper classes.

During the Victorian era, a wider selection of tea began to be imported from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and India. Tea rooms serving afternoon tea grew in popularity, especially among women, being one of the few places where they could meet without a chaperone. By the early 20th century, many establishments had expanded on the custom of a musician playing in the background and were holding tea dances in the afternoons. Today, tea has become an integral part of our daily routine and could be described as Britain’s national drink. Although invented in America in the early 20th century, the tea bag didn’t become popular in England until the 1970s, when it revolutionised our tea drinking habits and put fortune tellers who read tea leaves at the bottom of a cup into decline! Still considered a rather genteel English custom, today, sumptuous afternoon teas are served by many top hotels with a bewildering number of different tea blends on offer along with a ‘tea sommelier’ to help you choose. They are often booked up months ahead - a testament to tea’s enduring popularity.

Portrait of a Local Artist Wiltshire Artist seeks a gallery for a solo Show

N

ick Andrew from Warminster was preparing for an exhibition of his work depicting London parks at the Curwen Gallery, London in April. But he was let down at the last minute when he learned that the Curwen Gallery was closing after 35 years of trading. Each week since January 2016 Nick has been taking his sketchbook to a different public garden or park in central London, drawing, discovering, meeting park users and researching for his Sticks in the Smoke project. “I am aiming to cover all of central London’s 60 parks and gardens, from the huge acreage of Hyde Park to pocket handkerchief spaces such as St. Mary Staining,” he says. These drawings, as well as studies (small paintings) he creates after each visit, were the basis of his exhibition with a follow-up show in 2018. Additionally, a proportion of the exhibition sales were going to support the Sensory Trust charity which aims to make the outdoors accessible and enjoyable for all people, regardless of age, ability or social circumstance. Not one to dwell, good news was soon around the corner when he won the Individual Artists Award at the Wiltshire Life Awards. “A real surprise, a boost and validation! It was a great evening (even though black tie isn’t really my style!)” Nick opens his studio at Bull Mill Arts close to the banks of the River Wylye in South Wiltshire, near Warminster every first Saturday of the month and from May 27 to June 4 he will take part in the Wylye Valley Art Trail. Nick studied Art and Graphic Design in Oxford, London and Cheltenham. Since graduating in 1979, he has been working as a painter and has exhibited widely, in galleries and events throughout the UK, mainland Europe, and the USA. www.nickandrew.co.uk
