June / July 2018
Contents
Dear Readers,
espite record breaking temperatures during May this year, most of you will realise that this spring was the coldest for more than 30 years. Creating many expected and also some unexpected knock on effects! Some of these unexpected effects include apple trees which have stored more energy than usual creating thick blossom and hence an apple bonanza later in the year, an increase in car repair insurance claims from more pot holes, rocketing sales in slippers, duvets and nightwear but a 53% slump during March in fake tan products! The upside of the cold weather is that many flowers that bloom weeks apart bloomed all at the same time this year and our daffs seemed to go on forever!
with best wishes,
Hopefully the fine weather will continue into June for a bit as we have booked a week’s cycling holiday in Herefordshire! ‘Flaming June’ unfortunately seems to be a thing of the past in recent years - so we will be armed with full wet weather gear! If the sun does decide to hang around then camping is a lot of fun, especially with children. Our article on page10 gives you lots of ideas especially if open air concerts are your thing. And if your spring cleaning and decorating plans have gone to pot this year like ours have because of the strange weather, then look in our ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 46 for all those handy tradespeople to get you up to speed with this year’s projects.

Another old Three Legged Cross business on the Horton Road was Ye Olde Greye Cottage which was a Guest House and Tea Room. Run by hostesses Misses Margaret and Edith Franks, they are also remembered for selling ice creams to
Today it is very difficult to locate the same spot and the only indication is probably the distant tree line which although in a similar position has no doubt also changed considerably over the decades.
The building, later converted into the Capercailzie Restaurant, was demolished to build Greycot Close in the 1980’s. Note the name which in case you haven’t realised is a slightly corny nod to the name of the Olde Greye Cottage!

Verwood Panto member’s happy ending!
ecently Verwood Pantomime Society Member Mary Hindmarch was invited, along with her family, to meet the members of Verwood Fire station who were involved in rescuing her and her partner John after a serious road traffic accident nearly 2 years ago. What Mary didn’t know was that she would also meet Fiona, one of the paramedics who attended and also surprise guest Neil Bizzell from the actual Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance crew who helped to save Mary’s life. After lots of thank you’s, questions and a few understandable tears, Mary presented Neil with a cheque for the Air Ambulance for £1450.00 which was raised from a generous audience after show collections from the Snow Queen Pantomime at the Verwood Hub in January.

Carry On Camping by Kate Duggan

ampfires, bike rides, toasted marshmallows, bug hunts, star gazing … there’s a lot of fun to be had on a family camping trip. Camping on a budget While camping is one of the most wallet-friendly ways to holiday, the equipment doesn’t always come cheap. Try searching Ebay, Gumtree and Facebook for secondhand tents. You’ll often find people selling a full camping package, including tent, airbeds, gas stove and chairs. Do you have Tesco points to spend? You can pick up a 4-man tent from Tesco Direct for around £50. Rent a tent Love the idea of camping, but don’t have space for all the equipment, or just don’t fancy pitching a tent in the rain? Why not rent a tent? Your tent will be put up for you and you can even hire all the equipment to go with it. All you need to do is turn up, unpack and head to the beach. Search online for companies or ask your chosen campsite for recommendations. If you want a few more mod-cons, you could look into hiring a campervan or caravan. Try www.camperbug.co.uk for retro VW campervans. Where to go We really are spoilt for campsites in the UK. There
are literally hundreds to choose between, from tiny farm fields to entertainmentfilled holiday parks. The National Trust has lots of smaller, peaceful sites on offer, including in the Lake District, Cornwall and Snowdonia; see www.nationaltrust.org.uk. Camping festivals Kids entertainers, live music, food and drinks stands, craft tents … some festivals are fun for the whole family. Check out: Cornbury (13th – 15th July): The line-up for this year’s festival includes Alanis Morrisette, Amy Macdonald and Pixie Lott. The Oxfordshire festival also boasts a kids’ area, with discos, yoga, den building, circus skills, live shows and craft activities; see www.cornburyfestival.com. Bluedot Festival (20th – 22nd July): Set in the grounds of a deep space observatory in Cheshire, Bluedot offers children’s areas, live shows, handson activities, animations, interactive experiments, and a line-up that varies from The Chemical Brothers to The Halle Orchestra. Science lovers will be in their element; see www.discoverthebluedot. com. Camp Bestival (26th – 29th July): This Dorset festival includes onsite camping in the ticket price.
There are craft workshops, a circus school, live shows, a 50 foot inflatable whale to explore, demos by Mister Maker and other popular presenters, and a lot more besides; see www. campbestival.net. Farmer Phil’s Music Festival (10th – 12th August): With a week’s camping included in the £80 ticket price and tickets for under-12s priced at just £2, this is a great festival for families on a budget. It’s a much smaller festival than many of the others, but there are plenty of bands and lots of activities for children. Beautiful Days (17th – 19th August): With a huge children’s area, hands-on workshops, live entertainment, bushcraft, story-telling, a free shuttle bus to and from the local train station and a carfree camping field reserved for families, Beautiful Days is ideal for a weekend away; see www.beautifuldays.org. Other family-friendly festivals worth considering include Chagstock (www. chagstock.info), Nozstock (www.nozstock.com), Just So Festival (www. justsofestival.org.uk) and Deer Shed Festival (www. deershedfestival.com). Check out www.festivalkidz.com for more recommendations, reviews and advice.

he natural world is in full swing during June and July and life at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve is abundant. Breeding birds on the site continue to fill the air with song as many will have mates producing a second brood. From the water’s edge to the woodland canopy, all over the reserve young birds will be fledging and gaining independence. Look out for the incredible stripy faces of Great Crested Grebe chicks on Ivy Lake and oystercatcher, lapwing and little ringed plover chicks on the shore of Ibsley Water. Keep your eyes to the ground mid-June for emerging toadlets – they are small, very well camouflaged and easily overlooked until one catches your eye and you realise you are surrounded. They dare not risk drying out so wait for a spell of wet weather when they emerge from the lakes en masse, covering the footpaths between the Centre and Ivy South Hide as well as other locations around the reserve.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. www.hiwwt.org.uk
On a sunny day the air is filled with insect life with Red Admiral, Peacock, Comma and Speckled Wood butterflies all plentiful and the summery sound of chirruping crickets and grasshoppers will delight your ears. Blashford is ideal for dragonflies and damselflies as our range of habitats suit their lifecycle. They spend their early life around the wetlands but move into the woodland and grassland areas to hunt as adults. Take a walk down to Ivy South hide and you are quite likely to spot a grass snake basking in the warm summer sun. On Thursday 21st June from 2pm until 4pm you can join the Reserves Officer on a guided ‘Mid-Summer Bugs’ walk in search of summer wildlife, including dragonflies, butterflies and moths. Alternatively for a family friendly ‘Catch the Bug’ experience you can join our Education Officer in the meadow to discover the fascinating miniature world of grasshoppers, crickets, spiders and bugs galore on
Saturday 23rd June, from 2pm until 4pm. For both events please book by telephoning 01425 472760. During the breeding season many birds will have been in especially attractive plumage but now start to moult. The lakes here at Blashford can become home to hundreds of Greylag and Canada Geese as they carry out their moult. Whilst they are replacing old feathers for new, they are vulnerable to predators like foxes, so they use the lakes to stay safe. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

Major contemporaries were the MG Maestro efi which had much more of everything including space, driveability, road-holding and safety, while the Peugeot 205 GTi was incredibly fast but unforgiving, majoring on high power output in a small, very light car with no creature comforts. So today? The Golf has gone from podgy to overweight but is still reasonably fast, the MG was unfairly consigned to the history books, and Peugeot have struggled since the 80’s to emulate their early success with the 205. Well yes, the mind is transported to the halcyon days of the Volkswagen Golf MK1 which in the early 80’s opened a new market sector for ‘hot hatches’ and despite over the years becoming podgy and bettered by other car makers, it paradoxically remains the iconic yardstick against which all other hot hatches are measured. How Much Money Will You Need For Your Retirement?
Finance
T
here’s a general consensus in the press that, to live comfortably in retirement, you need a pension of at least £20,000 a year. Where you live obviously makes a difference to the costs, but in general, people’s idea of what constitutes a ‘comfortable’ retirement also differs. So, if like many people you’re unsure how much you’ll need in retirement, how can you find out? Focus on your expenditure initially Rather than obtaining pension statements and forecasts first, it’s a good idea to calculate how much you’ll need for the essentials in retirement, taking into account what your circumstances might be in the future rather than now. If you pay your bills by direct debit, have a look at your bank statements for regular household outgoings such as mortgage, utilities, council tax and house insurance. Then you can factor in the cost of emergency repairs such as boiler or car breakdowns. The total is the sum you’ll need to cover using a guaranteed income. Pension forecasts and statements Once you’ve calculated your expenditure, you can obtain a state pension forecast from the gov.uk website. Work and personal pension statements should be available by phone or in writing from your pension provider(s), and there are also
a number of online ‘pension calculators’ that give you an idea of how much you might receive. What expenses will you save in retirement? • If you’re currently supporting your family or making mortgage repayments, these expenses may not be relevant once you retire. Not having to commute to work is also a significant costsaving for some. • Many people choose to downsize their property in retirement – if this is on the cards for you, it would release a lump sum of cash to pay off any debts you have remaining, invest for an income, or to pay future house maintenance costs, for example. So now you’ve got all the figures you need, how do you access your pension pot when the time comes? Pension freedoms The pension reforms that were introduced in April 2015 give you much greater choice in the way you access your pension pot. Prior to this, an annuity had to be purchased which provided a guaranteed income for life. Although this option remains available and is commonly used, it’s no longer the only one. With professional pension advice, you can maximise your pension savings whilst also ensuring you avoid the significant pension pitfalls that now exist.
By Ann Haldon Pension mistakes that could jeopardise your retirement Could you outlive your pension savings? It’s possible that you could outlive your pension savings if you take out too much money too early. It’s crucial to seek professional help on the most tax-efficient ways to access your pension, so you don’t risk reducing its value unnecessarily. Beware pension scams One of the downsides of the new pension freedoms is that con artists have been able to swindle people out of their hard-earned pensions. Scams such as those offering tax-free transfers to dubious investment schemes, or suggested legal ‘loopholes’ that allow you to avoid paying tax, have been widespread in recent years. So essentially, there are three factors when it comes to thinking about money in retirement: • How much money you’ll need to live on each month. • How you’re going to achieve this level of income. • How you’ll manage your money. With the help of pension professionals, and the facts and figures at your fingertips, hopefully you’ll make the most of your long-awaited retired life. www.which.co.uk/money/pensionsand-retirement/starting-to-planyour-retirement/guides/how-muchwill-you-need-to-retire www.gov.uk/check-state-pension www.pensionsadvisoryservice.org. uk/about-pensions/pension-reform/ freedom-and-choice

Inner and Outer Child It’s the image of the past that affects us the most. We all know of an adult who over reacts to situations, who can’t take any form of criticism, someone who feels like the victim, maybe sulks, becomes demanding or who cries when they don’t get their way. These behaviours may be obviously childlike and we are often shocked when we see them being displayed by an ‘adult’. The gradual accumulation of unfinished mental and emotional business can lead to chronic anxiety, fear, confusion, emptiness and unhappiness throughout all our life. Inside us all we still have the little child (the inner child) and the adolescent (the outer child) part of us reacting strongly to certain experiences and situations and the feelings we’re having in the present can be the feelings of this little child/adolescent from the past. The process of opening to the world of your inner child and getting to know where these feelings come from can change and enhance your choices and patterns of behaviour. The inner child is the emotional self, where our feelings live. When we experience joy, sadness, anger, fear or affection our child within is coming out. When we are being playful, spontaneous, creative, intuitive and curious we can experience our authentic self who we know to be deep within us. Besides the inner child we also have the adolescent child who can be responsible for us making unsuitable choices in our lives from eating one too many biscuits or drinking too much, to deciding to leave a relationship which is too loving or staying in an abusive relationship. The adolescent thinks he/ she is making choices that will keep the inner child from being hurt once again but in reality it makes situations worse than before.

Through Inner Child work we can easily turn our feelings inwards and connect directly with that part of us that can offer comfort and support. This is called self-nurturing or re-parenting which allows us to reclaim that wounded child. We can provide for ourselves all the love and support and positive regard we never had. Inner Child therapy is available at: www.allaboutme.email

Helping people to get online
he latest research shows that around 150,000 Dorset adults need help with digital skills and 70,000 are completely offline. As part of the Superfast Dorset programme led by Dorset County Council to increase digital inclusion within communities across the Council, a network of volunteer Digital Champions has been established. You can learn more about the programme at www. dorsetforyou.gov.uk/superfast. Digital Champion volunteers offer free help to people in their local community to use the internet and pass on basic online skills. The Dorset Digital Champion for the
Verwood area is available for your assistance every Friday morning 11am - 12.30pm at Verwood Library to provide free advice on basic online skills such as: - How to create an email address - Staying in touch with friends and family via email, social media or video calls - Finding information online, for example hobbies, local events, news and more - Accessing public services information online. This is a free event, but please book your place. For more information, please contact James Prince, Library Manager, on (01202) 822972.
National Lottery funding trains 10 new volunteer mediators
T
hanks to the National Lottery Funding, the charity ‘Mediation Dorset’ has trained 10 new volunteer mediators to help resolve disputes between neighbours. This is in response to the demand for the service, and referrals from Dorset Police and Citizen’s Advice. Common causes of neighbour disputes are noise, parking, pets, waste, trees and hedges, boundaries and antisocial behaviour. Two thirds of UK homeowners say their lives
are being ‘blighted’ by the actions of a neighbour (Daily Express: 2016 survey). Mediation is encouraged by the legal system. Parties have the opportunity to work together in a voluntary and confidential setting to resolve their dispute as opposed to legal action which can be costly. If you have spoken to your neighbour but the problem remains, please contact ‘Mediation Dorset’ (01305 257717) who provides a free service to private individuals.

Helping Your Dog Deal with the Heat of Summer
Pets
H
eat stroke is a serious risk for dogs in the summer because they can’t lose heat through their skin as we do. Even on a warm day, if they can’t seek out shade or water to cool down, they can suffer irreparable organ damage, which is often fatal. So how do you prevent heat stroke, what are the symptoms, and what can you
PETS
do to help? Is your dog suffering from heat stroke? Signs and symptoms of heat stroke include: • Rapid breathing • Heavy panting • Lethargy • Agitation or disorientation • Drooling • Vomiting and/or diarrhoea • Fitting/seizures Preventing a disaster Being aware that your dog is very susceptible to heat stroke is a major factor in preventing it. You should make sure that: • They aren’t locked inside the car on a warm day. • Your dog has ready access to shade, and plenty of cool drinking water.
• You don’t over-exercise them, or take your dog out during the hottest part of the day. What to do if you suspect your dog has heat stroke You need to cool your dog down, but without making them too cold once the panting has stopped. Seek help from a vet as a matter of urgency, even if you’re not sure whether they’re in danger. Organ failure can occur over a longer period of time, and fast action can save their life even if you think everything is fine. www.telegraph.co.uk/pets/news-features/ keep-dog-cool-summer-heat www.metro.co.uk/2017/06/20/how-to-keepyour-dog-safe-in-the-heatwave-6722194

Lazy Days Wish List Planning to stock up on books for lazy days in the sun? Add these to your wish list…
Book Reviews
Finding Gobi – Dion Leonard This is the story of ultramarathon runner Dion Leonard and the small stray dog that joined him on his 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert. Dion becomes determined to offer the dog a home, but there’s an awful lot of red tape to get through, and then the dog disappears. This Sunday Times bestseller has also been rewritten as a picture book and as a young readers’ book, so do make sure you order the right version! Modern Women: 52 Pioneers – Kira Cochrane Modern Women is a celebration of some of the women who have shaped society and changed lives. Women such as Tegla Loroupe, who grew up with 24 siblings and half-siblings in Kenya, went on to win numerous marathons, and now runs a sports training programme for refugees. Activists, athletes, filmmakers
and even a circus strongwoman make up the 52. You’ll read about wellknown women as well as women who have been all but forgotten. In each case Cochrane has managed to unearth something new and inspiring. A fascinating read you’ll want to dip into time and time again. The Trick to Time – Kit De Waal Mona leads a quiet life in a seaside town – making her dolls, visiting the carpenter and helping grieving mothers. But how did she get here? What happened to the spirited young woman who set out seeking adventure, and the man she fell in love with? A beautiful read with engaging characters that covers issues as diverse as grief, immigration, mental illness and love. Now You See Her – Heidi Perks Charlotte only took her eyes off the little girl for a few minutes but when she doesn’t turn up, Charlotte is ostracised by the community and blamed by the media. And, of course, the little girl’s mother is never going to forgive her. But then the two women come under police investigation and something isn’t quite as it seems. A tension-filled thriller, with plenty of twists and turns.
All Things Bright and Strange – James Markert In the wake of WWI, Ellsworth Newberry is grieving for his wife and just wants to be left alone. But when a strange chapel is unearthed in the woods, Ellsworth may be the only one who can lead his community in a fight against an unknown, unseen enemy. Part Christian fiction, part horror, part historical fiction, All Things Bright and Strange starts strongly, but gets lost a little bit along the way. The Possible World – Liese O’Halloran Schwarz After his mother is killed, six year old Ben tells people that his real name is Leo, and that he has another mother. But no one believes him. Doctor Lucy is struggling to come to terms with her marriage breakup when she first meets the little boy. Clare is approaching her 100th birthday and decides to tell someone the story of her life before it’s too late. Three separate characters, whose stories (past, present or future) are interlinked. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

How We Fell in Love with Perfume by Catherine Rose
T
he word perfume is derived from the Latin per fumum, meaning ‘through smoke’. This is possibly because the perfumes of ancient civilisations were often incense-based. Today, true perfumes are a distillation of a certain percentage of oils in alcohol, with eau de toilette and eau de cologne being diluted versions. Although the Romans were well-known to be very fastidious in their toilet habits, perfume very much pre-dates them.
History
Used significantly across Asian cultures, it is believed perfume may have originated in Arabia – still sometimes described as ‘the land of perfumes’. The perfume formulas of a female Mesopotamian chemist known as Tapputi-Bellatekalim have been translated from a threethousand-year-old tablet written in ancient cuneiform script. In the ancient world, perfumes were much more than just pleasant smells – they were also revered. The Bible refers to a sacred perfume, only allowed to be used by priests, that was made from myrrh, cinnamon, cassia and sweet cane, and the ancient Egyptians believed perfume
was ‘the sweat of the gods’. Ancient Hindu Ayurvedic texts dating back to 3000 BC refer to perfume’s distillation. In India, a variety of fragrances were used in tantric rituals where women would be spiritually anointed with different oils for every part of their body. In 2004, the oldest evidence of perfume was discovered with the remains of a Bronze Age perfume ‘factory’ unearthed in Cyprus. It is thought that 13th century Crusaders brought back perfume from Palestine, and its use was eagerly taken up by Europe’s nobility. The Sun King Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643-1715, loved perfume so much that his palace became known as ‘the perfume court’. One of his favourite perfumes, used to fragrance his shirts, was called Aqua Angeli (‘water of angels’) and consisted of, amongst other ingredients, nutmeg, cloves, jasmine, orange flowers, musk and aloe wood, all boiled in rose petal water. During this time, France became a force in Europe for the manufacture and supply of fine perfumes, and Grasse in southern France, renowned for
its natural variety of flowers, was a leading supplier. In England, where sanitation was also abysmal and disease rife, perfumes were not only worn; they were also kept inside jewellery and the heads of canes to be inhaled by the wearer for health-giving properties and to ward off illness. As well as essential oils from flowers and plants, ingredients for perfume were also derived from animal excretions. Castor was extracted from beavers, musk from male deer and ambergris from the sperm whale. In the 1800s, synthetic fragrances made an appearance, their less expensive ingredients allowing for the first mass marketing of perfumes, thus launching famous companies that are still around today such as Coty and Guerlain. Then in 1921, Chanel created her signature scent, Chanel No. 5, with the help of Grasse parfumier Ernest Beaux who had made perfumes for the Russian royal family. Under her direction, he gave her numbered samples to choose from – the rest is history. Today our love of perfume remains undiminished and fragrances are popular with both men and women. But one thing hasn’t changed in that, even used daily, perfume is still viewed as a gloriously indulgent and luxury item – pure olfactory pleasure in a bottle.
