ll the ladies of Verwood Concert Brass recently formed an all female band, Blushing Brass, to hold a special fund raising concert. Jan Tiller, the driving force behind the initiative commented “I was inspired by the fund raising activity of another all female band “Boobs & Brass” and thought we have more than enough ladies in Verwood Concert Brass to do something similar.” So Jan set to and with tremendous support from the band and sponsors the idea became reality with Blushing Brass recently holding its first charity concert. like this before so I really did not know how it was going to go but was over the moon that we were able to present a cheque for £1,000 to Breakthrough Breast Cancer as a result of our efforts. What’s more we had such great fun in achieving it.” Jean Murray who accepted the cheque on behalf of Breakthrough Breast Cancer said “Breakthrough Breast Cancer are delighted to have the support of the ‘Blushing Brass’ ladies whose recent concert raised a fantastic £1,000 for Breakthrough’s work! This money will allow us to continue fighting breast cancer by finding the cause of breast cancer, improving detection, diagnosis, treatment and services.”

ROUNDABOUT
ROUNDABOUT VERWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE
PAST and PRESENT Woolsbridge Farm
Early 20th Century
P
reviously the Old Barn Farm Inn and currently The Three Legged Cross, Woolsbridge Farm was the farmhouse where John Henry Joy (1845 - 1922) and his first cousin and wife Mary Jane Orman brought up their nine children. John was an uncle of James Joy. Branches of the Joy family lived in several other parts of Three Legged Cross,
amongst them Gundry’s farm and the site of the Joy’s Farm housing Estate. Three Legged Cross was a sparsely populated hamlet until the 1960’s and 1970’s when the site of the former Joy’s Farm between Verwood and Church Road became one of the housing estates built here. Confusingly Woolsbridge Manor Farm which was opposite Woolsbridge Farm on the north side of Ringwood Road and followed on south of Potterne Farm, was also September 2013 sometimes known as Woolsbridge Farm. Today the farmhouse has become a very welcoming and popular, watering hole with an attractive garden at the front and numerous extensions which have been added over the years. No doubt a far cry from the undoubtedly more basic farmhouse in the original photo but still easily recognisable in its present guise.

Nothing To Be Afraid Of If you don’t open your door to trickor-treaters, try opening up a book with a terrifying plot-line. There are plenty of great novels and short stories to start your knees knocking and teeth chattering for this time of year…
The Shining
Stephen King For Jack Torrance, taking a new job as caretaker at the remote Overlook Hotel is far from the fresh start he’s hoping for. Off-season at a deserted hotel means a playground for madness, leaving Jack and his unsuspecting family isolated and in danger. Five year old Danny Torrance is the only one who can sense the horrors to come. He’s gifted with ‘the shining’, a sort of sixth-sense for the sinister and the threatening. As the snow begins to fall, the curtain of madness descends.
The Day of the Triffids
John Wyndham Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the garden… If you’ve ever hated that ‘morning after the night before’ feeling then Bill Masen is having the day from hell. He misses a major meteorite shower because his eyes have b e e n bandaged, but the next morning is far from a sight for sore eyes. He wakes to find everyone else has b e e n blinded and the world h a s
become a post-apocalyptic nightmare. Written in a time rife with Cold War paranoia, Wyndham’s vision of biowarfare has made this a science fiction classic.
The Enemy
Charlie Higson Your teenagers will either love this book, or it’ll terrify the pants off them. In a postapocalyptic London, all adults have been infected with a sickness, effectively rendering them zombies. They’re hungry and crazed and are running amuck in the capital, leaving everyone under fourteen who have survived the zombie virus to either find a place to hide, or come up with a plan to defeat them. It’s the first in an absolutely cracking series. Just don’t make it your bedtime reading.
The Best Short Stories of Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allen Poe The master of gothic horror, Poe doesn’t fail to send a chill down even the most rigid of spines. He has perfected the art of the psychological thriller with his tales of lunatics, ghosts and murderers all riddled with the human characteristics of jealousy, deviousness, lust for revenge and sometimes just pure hatred. Whether it’s the ‘da-dum, da-dum’ of ‘The TellTale Heart’ or the haunting refrain of ‘The Raven’, his tales of terror will crawl inside your head, make a little nest, and
s t a y there… until you’re j u s t about to nod off to sleep......
1984
George Orwell. ‘Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past’. Winston Smith works in the Record Department at the Ministry of Truth and is beavering away rewriting history to manipulate the present and future. Under the watchful eye of Big Brother, Winston secretly plots to overthrow the totalitarian regime. He’s going to need an ally and he thinks he’s found it in the form of new love, fellow-worker Julia. One of the most influential books ever written, Orwell’s dystopian vision has spawned many an imitator and many a reality TV show. Oh, the irony.
American Psycho
Bret Easton Ellis If this book teaches you one lesson, it’s to screen people thoroughly because even the handsome ones can be absolute nutters. Enter Patrick Bateman: Wall Street yuppie by day and psychopathic serial killer of young ladies by night. Let’s just say, he has a lot of nasty habits he wouldn’t want to list on his dating profile…and they’re all described in graphic detail for us. Proof that the devil takes many pleasing guises.

e caught the feral cat we now call Jasper so that he could be neutered as part of our campaign to neuter all feral cats who came to us for food and shelter. We had become increasingly concerned about his facial features as it would appear that his jaw was not quite right, it seem to tilt to one side and a canine tooth extended sideways from his mouth rather than in an upright position, his nose was scarred as well. We thought he may have been in a road accident. He was eating well although he was still very thin. The Vet confirmed that at some time he had sustained a broken jaw, as well as a broken hip and his canine tooth position was as a result of his injuries and could not be rectified by surgery without doing further damage to his jaw. We just hoped that at the time of his injury he was being looked after by someone and had not had to fend for himself. He has chosen to stay Everyone needs a friend. Jasper and his friend Mr Tom

I was so pleased when Jasper found a friend in Mr Tom as they both seemed so lonely and yet too timid for us to cuddle them, and they soon became inseparable, taking walks together and sleeping cuddled up together, whether it be in a box, a plant pot or on the bench enjoying the sunshine. surgery, Jasper moved into the house with his friend Mr Tom, and has chosen not to go outside again since, and together they like to sit at the big window and look out at the birds and other wildlife, very content with their new winter quarters. Perhaps in the Spring they may decide to once again visit the outside world, but meanwhile there is no hurry, they have all they need and they can still enjoy the view. They have finally found themselves a good and comfortable home and also have other companions living with them in the house. The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £10 + £1.75 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on 01202 826244. All proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

MONDEO
F
Mike's Motors
By Mike Wattam
ord has a much-delayed new Mondeo on the stocks for release in the UK during 2014. It is assumed the delay is to enable the new car to be yet again top dog in the large-barge class – on past performance we know Ford are likely to achieve it. Their job is paradoxically made all the more difficult as they have to achieve a significant advance over the current Mondeo which continues to be leader of the pack after 7 years, leaving cars such as the excellent new Peugeot 508, the Passat, Insignia and Avensis looking wanting.
- King of the Pack
Enough of the economics lesson. And the car? Walking up to it we see a familiar large shape, tarted up this year with a very aggressive pair of grilles and in estate car format and metallic black as tested it looks several classes more expensive than the ticket price suggests. A major cornerstone of Mondeo popularity is the sheer volume and luxury of the interior. Accordingly, driver comfort is peerless - notably the rear seats are of limousine level comfort and spaciousness, while luggage capacity is vast and very useable, especially in the estate car which is truly cavernous and with split-folding rear seats is caTo freshen the car for 2013 Ford pable of carrying a small wardhas made revisions which in- robe – and NOT in flat-pack! clude making much of the option list standard, a minor body facelift to differentiate it from previous model years, and importantly attacking the consumer budget with a more modest selling price – all to keep sales perky until next years’ substantially new model comes along. Consequently todays value proposition is generally unbeatable. Understand that Ford and their dealers priority is to ‘move the metal’, so maximise your bargain with a high spec car on which you may successfully negotiate a slim-line transaction price. Or you can wait for a nearly-new old version after the new model is introduced next Many comfort, driving and enteryear - unbelievable bargains will tainment options were standard be available as values of the old on our Titanium X specification model nose-dive against the new car. They included built-in satmetal. This assumes you will be nav, a superb DAB radio and happy with last years model, and multiple adaptors to plug in your why not! own mobile electronics. Safety
equipment includes day running lights, front and rear gap sensors, lane departure and blind spot warning systems, auto headlights and wipers, bluetooth phone connection, an excellently specified automatic climate control, power front seats and a lot of leather trim including the seat faces. The resultant list price of our car was just over £24,000 – a distinct bargain against many competitors. This car has always been a rewarding drive. An excellent compromise between a smooth, quiet ride and precise handling has been achieved. There is no denying that this is a very comfortable car – even on our disgusting UK road surfaces all extraneous noise was very well absorbed, making this a very quiet car. Even more extra-ordinary was the engine and transmission. A rather small 1.6 litre Ford turbocharged petrol engine was capable of brilliant economy and returned 43-45mpg throughout our test – making the case for diesel economy a bit of a nonsense. Despite the small engine, huge torque back-up made it no sluggard and on those rare occasions when a rapid overtake was needed, delivered delightful ironfist-in-a-velvet-glove performance aided by very well-chosen gear ratios – superb. In summary, this car presents a highly convincing case if the kudos of “the new 2014 model” is of no real interest to you. I’d go for it!

18 Convert a loft space into an extra bedroom. Hammonds Furniture (0800 021 4360; www.hammonds-uk.com)
Ten ways to create a new room in your house Just had a baby? Started working from home? Run out of storage? Then you need to stretch your home. By Katherine Sorrell
1. Build an extension Pros: Adding a rear extension to a kitchen can be a great way to create a multi-functional family room. Filling in the side return in a typical Victorian terrace is popular. It may be possible to add a second storey for a new bedroom or bathroom on the first floor, too. Cons: Reduces garden size. Unsympathetic extensions feel like an add-on. 2. Convert the loft Pros: Create a bedroom (perhaps with a bathroom), a home office or playroom, without taking space from the garden. Cons: Not every loft has the headroom or enough useable space. More difficult and expensive if your roof isn’t traditionally built. 3. Convert the cellar Pros: Turn a cellar into family living space, a useful utility area, a home office or even a self-contained annexe, without altering the outside of your home. Cons: Often more expensive, per square metre, than other ways of creating extra space. Can be difficult to get enough headroom and light into the new room. 4. Add a conservatory Pros: Adds extra living space and brings the garden into your
home. Relatively inexpensive. Cons: A poorly built conservatory can be too hot in summer, freezing cold in winter and full of condensation. Takes space from your garden. 5. Build a room in the garden Pros: The building work will hardly bother you. Cons: Not suitable for small gardens. Could look like a shed, security is an issue, and if not properly insulated it will be too cold to use in winter. 6. Divide a room into two Pros: Carving up a large space to add another room is useful and can add value, even though you’re not actually creating any extra space. Cons: You’ll need to create a separate doorway for the room, and include an opening window. 7. Put in an ensuite Pros: Loved by buyers. Can be fitted into quite a small space. Cons: Installing an ensuite at the expense of a bedroom could knock your property’s value. 8. Build on top of your garage Pros: A first floor extension on top loses no garden space and is often relatively easy. Cons: Foundations may not be strong enough, so the garage will have to be underpinned.
9. Convert your understairs space Pros: Turns a poorly used area into a valuable extra room – perfect for a ground-floor loo, an extra shower room or a study area. Cons: You’ll have to find extra space to store that understairs stuff. If putting in a loo or bathroom, ventilation and connecting to drainage may be a problem. 10. Convert your garage Pros: It’s a relatively straightforward job to turn it into a valuable indoor space. Cons: Foundations may need strengthening. Avoid if you live in an area where parking is at a premium. Remember, before starting any work, you must speak to the relevant authorities to find out if you need building regulations approval, planning permission or party wall consent from your neighbours. www.planningportal.gov.uk has more information.
How much value can I add? Before you embark on any major home improvement project, ask a local estate agent to value your home, and to estimate how much value they think your project would add.

25 Years of East Dorset National Trust Association
n the spring of 1988, over coffee in Crumbles Restaurant (now Raffles) in Ferndown, the seeds of the National Trust East Dorset Association were sown. In June 1988 a steering committee was formed. The period of time from June to September was extremely busy. A winter programme had to be planned and suitable halls found and booked. Membership cards, programmes and record cards had to be printed. Invitations were sent out to members of the National Trust and from then to the end of August money began to flow in confirming that the setting up of the East Dorset Association was going to be a success. The first AGM was held in November 1989 when membership had reached 850.
Today the Association is still an active group and has nearly 600 members, 22 of them original members. Throughout the year they enjoy a variety of events, including talks, outings, guided walks, skittle and supper evenings, lunches and coffee mornings, and other occasional events, which raise funds for the National Trust. Over the past 25 years the Association has donated approximately £85,000 to the National Trust. Beauty Quick and easy beauty fixes For a Whiter Smile
Brighten up your smile by adding a little baking soda to your toothpaste. It’s a really effective way of removing surface stains which are caused by tooth discoloring food and drinks. Make your teeth appear whiter by choosing a lipstick in a flattering shade: Bold rich reds and berry colours help your teeth appear several shades lighter, and pink or red hues with a blue undertone immediately make your pearly whites stand out because the blue undertones counteract yellow stained enamel. Orange and yellowy toned reds or coral shades have the opposite effect as they will actually make your teeth appear more stained and enhance their yellow hue. If reds or pinks aren’t your thing, then try a subtle lip shade in a shimmering, glossy neutral colour which disguise greying enamel.
For a Healthy Glow
To instantly enhance your complexion and create a healthy, youthful glow, all you will need is a pink coloured blusher and a shimmering highlighter. Sculpt and enhance your cheekbones by applying your blusher first. The pink shade will add a flush of colour to your skin, making your whole face appear brighter and more youthful. Next, apply a highlighter powder and cream versions work well - to the top of your cheekbones and blend well.
You can also use a little of the product under your e y e b ro w s to draw attention to your eyes, as well as a dab on your cupids bow to make your lips look fuller.
We have some top beauty tips that will make you look gorgeous in minutes.
For an Instant Facelift
Sparse or unruly brows are equally ageing. If you’ve over-plucked in the past, fill-out your brows by using both a good quality eyebrow pencil and eyebrow powder, in a colour that’s one shade lighter than your hair, to add subtle definition. Bushy brows need to be carefully shaped. First, remove any hair that grows beyond your upper brow line - do this by brushing your eyebrows up with a brow brush - and snipping off the long ends. Then, brush the hair downwards in the opposite direction and cut the hairs that extend past the lower brow line. Gradually tweeze away hairs in a line that tapers when you reach the peak of your arch. Take a little from each brow at a time and keep them both looking even.
For Kissable Lips
Lips look best when they’re relaxed. Many of us clench and tense our lips, making them look smaller, harder and altogether less kissable. Relax
them by parting them a little, this makes them look instantly fuller. Get super soft lips by applying a generous amount of lip balm all over, then gently exfoliate using a dry toothbrush or facecloth to remove all dead skin and reveal kissable soft lips. Finish off by applying some more balm.
For a Wide-eyed Look
Open up your eyes in an instant by carefully lining along your top lashes with a black liquid eyeliner - brown works well with blonde hair and is a softer alternative to black if you’re more mature. Position eyelash curlers at the base of your top lashes and gently squeeze. Set with a few coats of either black or brown mascara, depending on which eyeliner shade you select. Line under your bottom lashes and finish with a slick of white eyeliner on the inner rim of your eye. By Helen Taylor

A Very British Trade: Smuggling Then and Now By James Smith: @jsmithwriter http://jamessmithwriter.wordpress.com
F
lick through the television channels any time of the day or night and you’re bound to come across one of those customs programmes with men in HiVis jackets trawling through vans and lorries at Dover looking for contraband. This may take the form of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, or even heroin. Although the drama of these programmes, and the stir caused in the media upon a seized shipment might have you believe it’s more rife now than ever, these activities are actually part of an age-old trade, with an equally aged motive: smuggle goods over borders for financial gain and avoid the arm of the law.
Then The 18th Century antics of the smugglers and revenue men as characterised in J. Meade Falkner’s Moonfleet is a good example of the rather romanticised view many people have of the trade. The book conjures images of rowing boats hauled ashore under the dead of night, with illegal loads of brandy and tea passed manto-man to the beach, and later hauled for concealment within the shadiest confines of a Dorset village. Although this is based on fact, the business was a treacherous
one. Its history dates back to the 13th Century when Britain’s taxes were at an inflated level to support increasingly expensive wars in Europe. Smuggling became a recognised problem in Britain, mainly with the export of wool and hides. By the 18th Century, the smugglers’ modest boats operated in rough seas throughout the year, evading the revenue men who invariably steered cutters - modern, faster craft, which could track down the wily smugglers. The scale of the smuggling operations of the time is astonishing. Even with modern boats, aircraft, and vehicles, the importation of smuggled goods today is modest in comparison to activities of the 18th Century. Indeed, smuggling was rife - a natural part of coastal life from which many towns flourished, and without which their townsfolk might have starved. A game of cat-and-mouse ensued between the revenue men and smugglers, and lives were lost in skirmish and battles, such was the demand and value of the contraband. As well as tea, spirits, silks, and lace imported to Britain, wool was exported to France, often in a convenient and direct exchange with no cash involved. The logistics of these operations
were impressive, especially considering they were carried out during the era of sail, and off the dangerous seas and rocks of Britain’s notorious coastline. Goods were landed by the smugglers in darkness, then hauled across beaches, up steep cliffs, and distributed throughout the land by ‘Tubmen’ - usually farm labourers - who walked for many miles with barrels of spirits strapped to their person for sale to local people and pubs. And in keeping with Rudyard Kipling’s advice, whilst all this went on many would turn a blind eye or “Watch the wall... while the Gentlemen go by”.
Now It’s of little surprise that the antics of today’s ‘Gentlemen of the Night’ bear little resemblance to those of the 18th century. Smugglers who perhaps pack a little too much booze in the back of their transit on arrival at Dover are more likely to be greeted by a television crew hungry for prime time footage, than a revenue man with a cutlass. Nevertheless, smuggling of goods and drugs is a major problem for Britain, with a large organised criminal element ready to risk all to evade the law and excise duty. Many bring tobacco and alcohol into the country on ferries to Dover. This is legal of course, as long as it is for ‘personal’
To advertise call 01425 485194 info@roundaboutmags.co.uk www.roundaboutmags.co.uk
25 use. Naturally, a van packed with 30,000 cigarettes would struggle to justify personal use, so smaller consignments are often run by individuals hiding tobacco on their person. But of course Her Majesty’s Customs gets wise to such schemes, so the smugglers con day-trippers (often pensioners) to bring back carrier bags of contraband with them for a meagre fee of around £30. Not an honourable pursuit by any means, and a form of exploitation the authorities are keen to clamp down on. The appalling practice of ‘people smuggling’ is another modern blight for the customs officials to confront, with illegal immigrants hidden in cars, caravans, and goods trucks, often for days in terrible conditions. Then we have the serious business trafficking drugs, the ubiquitous modern-day vice. In yesteryear, smugglers would risk their lives to bring spirits
ashore, but today the same is true for the powdery white substance and all manner of other narcotics. The airports battle to deal with ingenious - and sometimes flawed methods of concealment within luggage, or more eye-watering ways within the human body. Meanwhile, the ferry ports employ advanced means to X-Ray and search vehicles including the friendly sniffer dog - popular with everyday tourists, but not so with the lowly backpacker harbouring a joint tucked into his sock. Two hundred years on, the sea continues to attract serious smugglers who make audacious attempts to evade the law. At time of writing, a gang of drug smugglers has been jailed for a £90 million haul of cocaine. They used an ocean-going yacht to transport it from Venezuela to Britain. All was going well until bad weather forced them
to launch a 12-foot inflatable to land the bales of cocaine on a beach on the Isle of Wight. And just like days of old, the men battled up cliffs in the wind and rain to organise safe passage of their load inland. The National Crime Squad and Customs, however, take a dim view of narcotics smuggling into Britain and had secretly been on their tail for months. The gang was apprehended and charged, with their leader, Michael Tyrrell, receiving a 26-year sentence. With the involvement of drugs, smuggling today takes a sinister, and perhaps a more dangerous form. But the lure of riches remains and drives those bold or stupid enough to take on the customs men and claim the prize. Easy ways to protect your PC How to avoid a digital disaster
T
hese days, we’re doing more and more things digitally: our holiday snaps sit on hard disks, our music is often in MP3 and we’re as likely to download films as buy them on disc. That’s great when your PC’s working perfectly, but how do you make sure it stays that way? Protecting your PC falls into three key categories: protecting your valuable data, protecting your PC from online threats and protecting your PC from physical damage. Protecting the hardware is the easy b i t .
Surge protectors can prevent nasty spikes in the electricity supply from causing any damage, and if you have a laptop you can buy a Kensington Lock to secure it
to something suitably hefty. A compressed air canister can blow dust out of fan vents and debris out of keyboards, and it’s a good idea to keep your PC away from extremes of temperature - a sunny room in summer is a terrible place to keep a PC. Be particularly aware of potential spills: liquid can destroy computers and you won’t believe the damage a tin of baby food can do to a
keyboard. It’s a very good idea to keep food and drink and PCs separate. No matter how careful you are, computers can and do break: every hard disk will wear out eventually. That’s why it’s really important to keep backup copies of anything important such as family photographs, home videos or iTunes downloads. You can do this in several ways - using an online service such as Mozy (www.mozy.co.uk) or Skydrive (skydrive.live.com), by burning them to DVD or by copying them to an external hard disk, but remember that if your backup is in the same place as the original, a domestic disaster such as a burst pipe might ruin both of them. It’s worth remembering too that services such as Facebook won’t compensate you if they accidentally delete or damage your online photo libraries; once again make sure that if it’s important, you have more than one copy in case of disaster. The other issue to worry about is “malware”, which is software designed to do nasty things. Sometimes malware spies on you, trying to obtain your passwords and other details; other times it just damages files or slows your PC to a crawl. The good news is that it’s relatively easy to avoid: Windows 7 and Windows 8 both have firewall software, which can prevent nasties getting in, and if you’re suspicious you can avoid most malware. Don’t open unsolicited email attachments from people you don’t know, and don’t let fake emails from the bank fool you: your bank will never send you programs or zipped documents in an email. Always make sure you’re downloading from reputable sources, such as Microsoft.com,
not Big Dave’s Totally Honest Download Page and make sure your web browser software is up to date. Old browsers are a real security risk.
Last but not least, invest in some security software. You don’t need to spend any money - Microsoft’s Security Essentials is free (www.microsoft.com/ security_essentials/), as is AVG Free anti-virus (free.avg.com) and AVAST (www.avast.com), and there are also free tools to tune up your PC. One of our favourites is CCleaner (www. piriform.com/ccleaner), which works miracles on sluggish PCs, and we’d also recommend the free Ad-Aware program (www.lavasoft.com) to prevent
annoying software setting up shop on your PC. Keeping your PC safe isn’t difficult, time-consuming or expensive, but it’s worth doing. Think of PC protection like home insurance: you hope you’ll never need it, but if disaster strikes you’ll be glad you have it.

National Recognition continues with Green Flag Award
M
oors Valley Country Park and Forest has received the prestigious Green Flag Award for the third year in a row. The Green Flag scheme is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. Awarded by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, it provides the most widely accepted measure of quality relating to the management, operation and improvement of freely accessible public parks and green space. Clare Gronow, Countryside Manager, said, “It’s particularly gratifying to receive this Award as Moors Valley celebrates its 25th anniversary. Receiving the Green Flag is national recognition for the hard work and dedication of the Rangers, support staff, volunteers and business con-
cessionaires whose collective efforts create the Moors Valley experience. The Park has grown enormously since its early days. It is now the third most visited Country Park in the country; the Rangers literally run hundreds of events every year and we welcomed over 800,000 visitors in 2012. Despite these huge numbers Moors Valley is still big enough for our visitors to find quiet places to relax and recharge your batteries and provide a safe haven for wildlife. As our logo proudly indicates, we are one of the top places in the country to see dragonflies!” More information about the full range of activities and events at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood can be found at: www.moors-valley.co.uk or call the Rangers on: 01425 470721.

The alluring charms of Italy’s Ligurian Coast
P
erhaps less well known than the Amalfi coastline in Southern Italy, but of equally stunning scenery, is the Ligurian coastline situated in the North-West of the country and easily reached from Pisa or Genoa. The rugged landscape, with its cliffs and rocky promontories lashed by the waves, the umbrella pine trees and, palms and vineyards hugging the coast and the plethora of colourful old villages and opulent villas, dotted here and there, contribute to the breathtaking charm of this region. The area known as the CinqueTerre has become designated a National Park. It consists of five delightful villages, each with their own unique charm: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Some of
them are old fishing villages perched precariously on the cliffs with old pastel coloured houses tumbling down to the sea. High above the water, one can see the terraced landscape of vineyards and olive groves and how narrow
by Bobbie Dawson paths have been established to facilitate the farming of the area and to forge links with the neighbouring villages. Nowadays the CinqueTerre has become a tourist hotspot, popular with walkers, keen to hike from one village to the next. Needless to say, at the height of the tourist season these paths can become somewhat congested, but for the more serious intrepid walker, there are plenty of less frequented pathways that will take one high in to the hills, leading to quaint little hamlets, where time seems to have stood still and one can recover in the only cafe, frequented by the locals (which is more like someone’s tiny living room!). Although there is plenty of accommodation available in Cinque Terre, in my view it is better to stay in one of the little seaside towns adjoining the area. Levanto for example, is just a few stops away on the train and gives you a flavour of an authentic Italian seaside town, without hordes of tourists milling around. One can sit watching the locals promenading or having their ‘passeggiata’ and savour the local food - plenty of fish of course, ranging from octopus to the speciality of white anchovies. For the midday snack try the delightful bread, known as focaccia, seeping with olive oil and with all manner of different toppings and of course, no visit to Italy would be complete without a visit to the Gelateria to try out the myriad of different flavours of ice-cream, including basil!
A further highlight of a visit to Liguria has to be a trip to Portofino. Formerly a sleepy little fishing harbour consisting of attractive dwellings in hues of pinks and yellow. Set in a bay of classic scenic beauty, it became a haven for the the rich and famous ‘glitterati’, lured by its magnetic charms from the 30’s onwards. This
is still in evidence today, with opulent hotels, such as the Splendido in the hills overlooking the bay, with its own helicopter pad for the arrival of some of its guests. The continuing signs of wealth abound with the luxury yachts and gin palaces moored in the bay. Nowadays Portofino has opened its doors to mass tourism with regular ferry and bus services to the bay and it is also on many cruiseship itineraries. Despite this, it has succeeded in retaining its charm. At the end of a days visit, your return to one of the more modest seaside towns near CinqueTerre will be even more welcoming, after the frenetic pace of Portofino. Relaxing over a glass of wine and an evening meal watching the sunset - just perfect!

Portrait of a Dorset Artist Shaftesbury based artist Annie Taylor has been a full time painter for the last eight years.
A
nnie started painting when she lived in America for three years. “I opened a studio and art gallery on the North Shore of Long Island with a local artist,” she recalls. “The studio enabled me to study and work alongside established professional painters.” On her return to the UK with her young daughter Beth, financial pressure forced her to put the brushes aside and she established a PR and event management company in London. Specialising in film, theatre and television she represented clients at the Cannes Film Festival for a number of years. International clients included Warner Bros, CNN, Thames TV, Central Television, S4C, TV-am, Hanna Barbera, Playboy and Jim Henson Productions Inc (The Muppets and the Fraggles). In 1990 she moved out of London, back to her roots in the west of England and started producing large outdoor festivals. Finally, when Beth went off to art school, the temptation to get back to painting was overwhelming. “In 2003 I took the decision to work at it full time,” says Annie. “I have now been working full time as a painter since 2005 and have exhibited in one woman and group shows in London and the South West of England.” She adds: “I have been passionate about the natural world since I was very small. My work is about that passion: not just the silence, the peace, the nurture for the spirit that the countryside can provide, but also its opposite face which can be harsh, threatening and wild. It is this sensuality in the natural environment that attracts me for which the very physical sensation of working with oil paint is perfect.” Annie is participating in A Sense of Place, part of the Dorset Visual Arts trail in October. Her work is also shown at Fisherton Mill, Salisbury and Courcoux & Courcoux, Stockbridge. www.annie-taylor.com

Focus on Francis
Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals provide respected and highly regarded NHS care to hundreds of thousands of patients in East Dorset every year.
In national assessments and reports, these hospitals consistently perform at a high level against a range of key standards and quality indicators. Comprehensive surveys of patient views also paint a positive picture of how hospital care is viewed by those who receive it. Achieving these high standards requires a continued commitment to quality from the board of directors to the wards, and a sharp focus on providing truly patient-centred care. The tragic consequences of losing sight of these basic objectives were highlighted earlier this year in a damning report which examined the causes of substandard care provided by Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. The Francis Report, published in February, marked the culmination of a year-long public inquiry into the systemic failings at that trust, and sent reverberations throughout the NHS and further afield. At the heart of the report, its author, Robert Francis QC, called for a re-emphasis on ensuring the needs of patients come first. So how did hospitals in East Dorset respond to this report? At Poole, the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, it provided an opportunity to re-evaluate the fundamentals of how quality care is delivered and whether genuine emphasis was placed on each and every patient and their individual needs. In short, were they getting the basics right?
The report’s 290 recommendations were reviewed in detail as a matter of urgency in order to provide assurance that the failures identified at Mid Staffs could not be repeated here.
Each hospital also held a series of listening events, providing an opportunity for more than 300 staff working in a wide range of roles to discuss the Francis Report with members of both trust’s management boards. In addition, patient and public involvement groups were asked to give their views on the report and the care offered at their local hospitals. Understanding individual patient experiences and where care exceeds or falls short of expectations is vital, says Martin Smits, Director of Nursing and Patient Services at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. “It is all too easy in the wake of the terrible stories which emerged from Mid Staffs to forget the excellent work taking place in the NHS,” said Martin. “Locally, we know from national surveys that our patients rate both our hospitals highly, which is a huge encouragement to us and spurs us on to deliver even better care and service.” “What I believe is essential is peering underneath these headlines, to look at the factors that make an individual patient’s experience in hospital good, and where it could have been improved.” “We can only do that by listening to patients and our staff.” Paula Shobbrook, Director of Nursing at The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, agrees. “No one knows more about what is happening at the
forefront of patient care than those responsible for delivering it and those receiving it,” said Paula. “These experiences and viewpoints - good and bad - are essential in order for us, as board members, to know how we are doing.” “Trust boards receive a vast amount of information on quality and performance. Coupling this with the views of staff, as we have done through our postFrancis Report listening events, and the experiences of our patients, provides invaluable insight.” “Our ‘putting patients first’ commitment is just that - it’s a highly visible declaration that our aim is to ensure that at all times our focus remains on our patients and nothing else.” Martin cites Poole Hospital’s longstanding commitment to patients - the Poole Approach – as a key factor in ensuring standards at his hospital remain consistently high. “The Poole Approach may have been introduced more than a decade ago, but its central tenet has never been more true - ‘patient centred care with dignity and respect for all’,” he said. Whichever way this commitment to the needs of patients is packaged, both Martin and Paula are in complete agreement on one issue - when it comes to high quality care, complacency is simply not an option. If you would like to have your say on care at Poole Hospital, visit www.poole.nhs.uk and click ‘give us feedback’, or for the Royal Bournemouth or Christchurch hospitals, visit www.rbch. nhs.uk and click on ‘patient and visitor’ section.
