This Spring the Roundhouse has more activities than ever before for you to get involved in. There are 27 weekly projects, including new ones such as Live Photography and Techincal Theatre, where you will get to experience the excitement of being part of one of London’s coolest venues. Don’t forget you can come whenever you like and use all of the facilities independently if you become a Member. Read page 17 to find out how. And remember that costs are kept low, so it won’t break the bank. If you do struggle with any project costs we can help, find out about bursaries that are on offer on page 4.

Band Development Night

THE Collaboration SESSIONS A great chance for MCs, music producers and musicians to collaborate. Get advice and support from a professional producer and MC, develop your writing and performance technique and lay down the perfect vocal. Music Producers: Drum Programming Special Work alongside an experienced producer and perfect your drum production technique. This project will explore the different programming styles associated with grime, drum ‘n’ bass, hip hop and world music. Guest session drummers will also be on hand in the EMI Studio, giving you the opportunity to record live drum loops and patterns that can be used in your own music. MUSIC AND THE MOVING IMAGE

A great opportunity for bands to gain invaluable advice from industry professionals. Rehearse with your band and record a high quality demo in our EMI Studio. Take your music to the next level. THURSDAYS 6.00PM– 9.00PM AGE: 16– 25. LEVEL: ADVANCED

JUNIOR JAM Learn to play as part of a band and meet other young musicians. All styles and instruments welcome, as long as you’ve got some experience of playing. SATURDAYS 10.00AM– 1.00PM AGE: 11– 13. LEVEL: BEGINNERS / INTERMEDIATE

Learn the fundamentals of music composition for the moving image. Collaborate with film makers, write music for animation and graphics, and experiment with sound design. Create live scores using a combination of live instruments and cutting edge studio technology. A fantastic opportunity for musicians and producers to work with a professional film composer. Experience of writing music is required.

Meet other musicians and collaborate as part of a band. All styles and instruments welcome, as long as you’ve got one year’s playing experience. Develop your playing, songwriting and general musicianship. There will be several performances and recording opportunities on this project.

Jazz: funk/soul Learn the basics of jazz improvisation in a friendly atmosphere. Develop your listening skills and general musicianship through an exploration of funk, afrobeat and fusion styles. Perform with the band at major venues and festivals. Have fun, experiment and be part of the exciting Roundhouse Jazz Ensemble. No knowledge of jazz is necessary, but some basic instrument skills are required. Opportunities to develop music theory knowledge. Vocalists and spoken word artists particularly welcome. SING OUT Do you sing and want to develop your voice? Learn songs from different styles and traditions. B ROADCAST & M EDIA PROJECTS tv live Become part of a production team and create live TV shows. Learn how to use the equipment for a live camera edit, and produce pre-recorded content for the shows. You will have to work as a team and will develop production skills, leadership and confidence to produce a creative media product that will be broadcast on the web and the Roundhouse plasma screens.

Develop your digital photography skills and portfolio and create a series of photographs exploring the theme ‘Youth and the Media’. You will create work for an exhibition as part of the Turning Point festival at the Roundhouse, so you will need to be motivated and produce work outside of sessions. If you want to get serious about photography this project will give you the chance to develop your technical skills and be mentored by an inspiring professional photographer. Are you a young filmmaker? Come and get advice on your projects from an experienced filmmaker and support from other young filmmakers, plus use the time to work on our industry standard equipment. Everyone on this project can use Roundhouse equipment independently outside of the weekly sessions and we may provide commissions to members of the group.

Digital Photography: Youth and the Media

Digital Photography Learn tips and techniques for taking great photographs. Find out what makes a good photograph. Work may be selected to exhibit during Turning Point — a major festival at the Roundhouse in May. TUESDAYS 5.00PM– 6.30PM AGE: 11– 14. LEVEL: BEGINNERS

Attend gigs and get up close to the action in the pit at the Roundhouse. Learn the skills necessary to take great live photography. There will be a session every two weeks, you will attend gigs and performances at the Roundhouse but will also need to be committed and proactive about finding your own opportunities. Spaces are limited and there will be a selection process for this project. Animation & Graphics Learn how to use Flash and Adobe After Effects to create graphics and animations. Work with other projects to deliver a brief e.g. animations for music, graphics for the Live TV project. Your work will be showcased at Turning Point — a major festival at the Roundhouse in May. Roundhouse and ExAnimo are offering two £500 film bursaries for young filmmakers to develop short films as part of their commitment to supporting a growing community of young filmmakers. Become part of a team creating a weekly serial drama. Back by popular demand! This project teaches you the skills needed to act in front of a camera. Blitzstepz Dance Company

An exciting opportunity to take part in Turning Point — a major festival at the Roundhouse in May. You will work with a professional actor / director and help devise a piece of theatre to be performed as part of Turning Point. Using improvisation and other theatre techniques you will develop your acting ability and learn how to give a great performance.

Back with a great new tutor recently returned from tour with DV8. Those who are successful in the audition will work towards a performance as part of Turning Point. Create routines using influences from different styles — street, lyrical and bashment. To take part enrol and come along to the first session which will be an audition.

Technical Theatre

Discover the thrills of expressing yourself in words and performance. This introduction to Slam poetry will teach you how to create, craft and communicate your own poems. You don’t need any experience, just come down and take part in something really exciting. Plus you will get the chance to take part in Turning Point.

There is a lot more to theatre than appearing on stage! In this new project you will go backstage (and in front and above) and learn the essential technical elements that make live performances so special. Led by the Roundhouse’s professional technical team, the first module of this project will teach you the fundamentals in stage lighting. You will use high end professional computer software, WYSIWYG, to design and plot lighting schemes to songs of your choice and you will get to see your designs come to life in the Roundhouse Main Space. The second and third modules of this course will focus on sound and stage management. All participants will get the opportunity to see a gig in the Roundhouse as part of the course.

MC Beatbox Masterclass A chance for young MCs and beatboxers to flex their vocal skills and work with some great artists from the world of hip hop, grime and two step. M EM BERSHIP If you become a member you can use all the facilities independently. If your band needs somewhere to rehearse, you can hire a room for £1 an hour — we even have drums, mics, amps etc you can use. Or DJs can use decks in the DJ rooms.
