DEAR PARTICIPANTS, Welcome to the sixth running of the Williams Route 66 Marathon, presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. We’ve made every effort to put on a great race for you this year and hope you take advantage of the unique opportunities the Route 66 Marathon family of events provides.

New this year is a scenic course that winds through more of Tulsa’s entertainment areas including the Brookside neighborhood, Brady Arts District and the beautiful private campus at The University of Tulsa. The marathon is also seeking certification by the Council for Responsible Sport so we’re making every effort, where feasible, to put on a green race for you and lessen our impact on the environment. With our rapid growth, we’ve divided the races up to occur over two days so we can provide a comfortable course for all 12,000 participants expected this weekend.

Back by popular demand is the Center of the Universe Detour presented by Michelob Ultra where marathon participants can take a 0.3-mile detour to the Tulsa landmark by the same name and receive a commemorative coin. Everyone is also invited to enjoy the two-day Health, Fitness and Sustainability Expo sponsored by St. John Health System as well as the Finish Line Festival and Classic Car Show occurring at Veterans Park on Sunday.

We pride ourselves on offering a unique and memorable race-day experience that is only made possible by the support we receive from the community; city of Tulsa; volunteers; spectators; sponsors including Williams, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma and St. John Health System; and of course, participants like you.

EXPO & PACKET PICKUP GUIDE Packet Pickup

Participants and volunteers must pick up their packets at the 2011 Williams Route 66 Marathon Health, Fitness and Sustainability Expo, presented by St. John Health System. Last-minute registration is also available at the expo if races have not yet sold out.

Race-day registration and packet pickup are not available and packets cannot be mailed to participants. No exceptions.

The Williams Route 66 Marathon Health, Fitness and Sustainability Expo presented by St. John Medical System hosts more than 50 exhibitors featuring running gear and shoes, as well as sports and fitness related items.

The two-day expo is held at the Tulsa Convention Center and is free and open to the public.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma will provide FREE cholesterol screenings at the Route 66 Marathon Expo on Nov. 18-19. The screenings will measure cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index, and Framingham Risk. In addition, the Oklahoma Caring Foundation will provide FREE flu shots to children 18 and under from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Parking: The Civic Center Parkade is located north of the Tulsa Convention Center on 3rd Street between Houston and Denver. Parking is $5 to $8 per day.

Race Information

Restrooms

The 2011 Williams Route 66 Marathon now covers two days of races. Saturday offers the 5K race and one-mile fun run, and Sunday’s races include the marathon, half marathon and marathon relay.

All timed races (marathon, half marathon, marathon relay and 5K) are USATF certified and will be electronically timed. The fun run is not timed.

Portable restrooms are located in Veterans Park to the east of the start line and at various points along the course. (See the Veterans Park maps for Saturday.) Please expect lines and allow plenty of time to use these facilities prior to the race.

Start Line Information – Saturday Nov. 19 Races

For Saturday, the race-day information will be located in Veterans Park just east of the start/finish line. (See the Saturday Veterans Park Map.) If you lose your timing tag or forget your race number, please visit the information tent for assistance.

The 5K and fun run start line is near 20th and Boulder Avenue, just south of downtown Tulsa at Veterans Park.

The start line and finish lines are in the same location. (See the 5K and fun run course maps.) NOTE: this is a different start location from last year’s 5K and fun run. Please plan to arrive early to familiarize yourself with the start/finish area. Please see the Saturday Veterans Park map for the location of your start corral and portable restrooms.

Your Race Number

Race numbers must be worn on the front of your shirt or shorts so race officials, course photographers and finish line personnel can clearly see it. Do not cut or fold your number in any way. Officials must be able to see your whole number to know that you are an officially registered participant.

Race numbers are non-transferable and may only be worn by the participant to whom it is assigned.

Changing Events

If you decide to change races you MUST notify race officials at registration at the EXPO. No changes will be made on race day. If you change races on race day without having notified a race official at the expo or before, you will be disqualified.

Gatorade Stations

The Williams Route 66 Marathon is proud to serve Gatorade and water at all Gatorade stations on the Route 66 Marathon course. One Gatorade stop is provided for the 5K located just past the 3-kilometer mark in Woodward Park.

See the 5K course map. The one-mile fun run does not have a Gatorade or water stop.

Race Course

No bicycles, roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, baby joggers or animals will be allowed on the race course at any time. Assistance received from any source other than a race official may result in disqualification. In some areas, only the side of the road participants are on will be closed to vehicular traffic.

As such, it is imperative that you stay within the cones marking the course.

Any deviations from the marked course can result in a disqualification and serious injury. Race officials will be

the information is incorrect, you must report it immediately to registration officials at the expo.

SATURDAY RACES stationed along the course to ensure that each finisher has completed a full race distance. ANY PARTICIPANT FOUND TO HAVE RUN/WALKED LESS THAN THE FULL COURSE WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. DO NOT CROSS THE FINISH LINE IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE ENTIRE COURSE.

Dropping Out

If you are unable to finish the race, please notify someone at the nearest aid station.

Finishers’ Food & Beverage Area

Each participant will pass through the finish food area in the finish chute after completing their race. Fruit and snacks

will be provided as well as Gatorade, water, Muscle Milk, Rockstar Energy Drink, and other Pepsi products.

Medical Aid

Medical aid will be provided on the course and at Veterans Park. Medical aid stations will be clearly marked along the course. There will also be medical personnel on bicycles along the course.

The medical tent at Veterans Park will be located to your right as you cross the finish line.

Your personal safety is very important.

We encourage you to take time to write out emergency information on the back of your race number and any allergies for medical personnel.

Results

All results are unofficial until certified by race officials. On race day, unofficial results will be available at the results tent next to the information tent. Unofficial results will also be posted online as the race progresses on route66marathon.com. Final results will be posted online after certification by race officials.

Awards

Awards will be given to participants in all timed and certified races (marathon, half marathon, marathon relay and 5K.) Per USATF Rule 245.1, Open Men’s and Women’s and Master Men’s and Women’s top three awards will be based on gun time (the order in which the athletes cross the finish line.) Age group awards will be based on timing system time (the actual time elapsed between an athlete reaching the start line and finish line.)

Open Male, Open Female, Masters Male, Masters Female Open Wheelchair Male, Open Wheelchair Female BASED ON ELECTRONIC TIME Age group awards (male and female): Under 10, 10-14, 15-19, 16-19, 20-24, 2529, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75+ BASED ON ELECTRONIC TIME AND AGE GRADED Clydesdale awards: 170-184, 185-199, 200-214, 215-229, 230+ Filly awards: 145+ Weight class awards will be based on agegraded times following USATF guidelines.

Participants are eligible for one award.

Award winners in the Open and Masters divisions will be excluded from the agegroup and weight class awards.

Awards Ceremony

The awards ceremony will take place at the stage in Veterans Park at 9:30 a.m. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in the Open Male, Open Female, Masters Male and Masters Female divisions in the 5K. No awards are provided for the fun run.

Age group and weight group awards will not be announced from the stage.

Race results can be checked online at route66marathon.com.

Clydesdale, Filly, age group and relay awards will be shipped to the participants after the race. Please make sure that the address on your registration confirmation is correct.

Awards will be shipped to the address you provided when you registered for the Williams Route 66 Marathon. Lost or stolen awards will not be replaced.

Kids Finisher Medals Children 17 and under who participate in the 5K or Fun Run can get their finisher medal provided by St. John Health System at the St. John Health System Tent in Veterans Park.

SUNDAY RACES Race Information

• The marathon course will remain closed to traffic for 6.5 hours (until 2:30 p.m.)

• The electronic timing system will remain open for 7.5 hours (until 3:30 p.m.)

• Everyone finishing in 7.5 hours will receive an official finishing time.

• We do not guarantee that the Gatorade stations or medical aid stations will be open longer than the 15-minute per mile pace.

Start Line Information

The marathon, half marathon and marathon relay start line is located at 7th and Main Street in downtown Tulsa.

The races will start heading toward the south on Main Street. NOTE: this is a different start location from past years’ events. Please plan to arrive early to familiarize yourself with the start area.

Please see the map of the Main Street start area for the location of your start corral and portable restrooms.

Start Times

Marathon, half marathon and marathon relay start at 8 a.m.

Parking

Ample free parking is available on the downtown streets just north of Veterans Park.

PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN CHURCH PARKING LOTS ON SUNDAY. For the Sunday races, if you choose to park near the start line there are many surface lots located to the south and the east of the start line. DO NOT PARK ON THE RACE COURSE - YOUR CAR WILL BE TOWED. Please plan ahead on where to park so you can make it to the start line in time for the 8 a.m. start for all races.

There is no shuttle bus provided from the finish line to the start line prior to the race. Shuttles from the finish line to the start line are available AFTER the race to return participants to their vehicles.

Restrooms

Portable restrooms are located in Veterans Park to the east of the start line and at various points along the course (see the Veterans Park map.) Please expect lines and allow plenty of time to use these facilities prior to the race. For the Sunday races there will be portable restrooms along 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Streets just west of Main Street. (See the Sunday start area map.)

Race-Day Information Tent

For Sunday, the start line information tent will be located near 6th Street and Main Street in downtown Tulsa. (See the Sunday start area map.) For Sunday, there will also be an information tent at the finish line in Veterans Park. (See the Sunday Veterans Park map.) If you lose your timing tag or forget your race number, please visit the start line information tent for assistance.

Gear Check

Gear check is only available for the Sunday races. For Sunday, gear check is located on Boston Avenue between 6th and 7th streets. (See the Sunday start area map.) You can pick up your

gear after the race at Veterans Park on Main Street just south of 18th Street.

Be sure your gear check tag from your race bib is securely fastened to the gear check bag. Tulsa Route 66 Marathon Inc. is not responsible for lost items.

Time Limit

The marathon course is open for 6.5 hours beginning at 8 a.m. The course closes at 2:30 p.m. If participants choose to continue after 2:30 p.m., they do so at their own risk and will be required by the Tulsa Police Department to move to available sidewalks and obey traffic signals along the course. No finish times will be recorded after 3:30 p.m. (7.5 hours.) Finisher medals will only be awarded to those who finish within 7.5 hours. Finish line medical aid closes at 3:30 p.m. in the medical tent at the finish line. If problems are experienced after this time, please contact your personal physician or proceed to the nearest emergency room.

IMPORTANT - Please arrange a meeting place with loved ones BEFORE the race starts. We will not be able to use the public address system to reunite participants with their families.

Start Corrals

The corral system is used at the start of the Williams Route 66 Marathon, half marathon and relay to provide the best possible experience for all participants.

Runners and walkers will be assigned to one of four start corrals based projected pace. All race registrants are required to submit past and projected pace information, which will be assessed and verified for proper corral assignments.

Each corral will be designated by a letter (A, B, C or D), which will correspond to a letter on each athlete’s bib. The entries for the corrals are on the east and west side of Main Street in downtown Tulsa, along Boulder and Boston Avenues. Participants are highly encouraged to review the Sunday start

Athletes will only be permitted into the corral that corresponds with the letter on their bib. Once in their assigned corral athletes should line up by pace according to the signs posted in the corral.

Athletes that wish to participate with other athletes that are friends and/or training partners may do so. However, if they are assigned to different corrals, they must start in the corral with the athlete that has the slowest entry time. There will be no exceptions to this provision.

Hand cycle and wheelchair athletes will have their own separate corral at the start line that will be placed in front of the elite athletes, as the hand cycle and wheelchair races start prior to the runners/walkers.

Hand cycle and wheelchair participants will start at 8 a.m. Participants in corral A will start at 8:02 a.m. Participants in other corrals will start five minutes after the corral ahead of them clears the start line.

The Williams Route 66 Marathon is proud to serve Gatorade and water at all Gatorade stations on the Williams Route 66 Marathon course. Gatorade stations are located approximately every two miles for the first 20 miles of the marathon and every mile for miles 21 through 25. Dropping Out

If you are unable to finish the race, please notify someone at the nearest aid station. You can ride a relay shuttle bus back to the finish line if you do drop out of the race. Refer to the map for relay exchange locations.

Finish Line

Once you cross the finish line you will enter a secure zone - a fenced off area for race participants and officials only. Marathon, half marathon and marathon relay participants will receive your finisher’s

medal in this area. Marathon finishers will receive their finisher’s shirt. Water and Gatorade is available in the finish area.

Please make sure you have received the correct finisher’s medal before leaving the secure area. Participants in the marathon will receive a finisher’s medal and finisher shirt. A special My First Marathon medal is available for those completing their first marathon.

Participants in the half marathon and relay will also receive a finisher’s medal.

Finishers’ Food and Beverage Area

Each participant will pass through the finish food area in the finish chute after completing their race. Fruit and snacks will be provided as well as Gatorade, water, Muscle Milk, Rockstar Energy Drink, and other Pepsi products.

RELAY INFO

The Williams Route 66 Marathon relay is a 5-leg relay event. The marathon relay will follow the same course as the marathon. One runner can run more than one consecutive leg of the relay. However, each relay team must have between three and five participants. Mixed teams must have at least two female participants. All members of a team must be 40 or older for the Masters division.

Marathon Relay Exchange Zones – While You’re There

Be aware of the conditions and dress appropriately for the wait. There will not be much in the way of shelter at the exchange zones. Water and portable

restrooms will be available near each exchange zone. It would be a good idea to have a clothes bag for each exchange zone so that the runner just finishing will have some warm, dry clothes when he/she is done running.

The runner starting out on the new leg can leave her/his clothes in the bag for the teammate to take back to the start.

However you work out the logistics, you are responsible for your own gear! Don’t leave it on the bus and don’t expect the volunteers to be able to take care of it for you.

Marathon Relay Numbers and Timing Tag

Team members must wear a number visible on their front. Team members must also wear a “RELAY” bib on their back. Each team will be given one D-TAG Timing Tag attached to a Velcro strap. This strap should be worn around the runner’s ankle. The Velcro strap with the timing tag must be handed off to the next runner in the fenced exchange zones. The next runner should attach the strap around his/her ankle before proceeding to the next exchange zone.

The timing computer can only read a tag that passes within a foot of the timing pad. If a runner does not want to wear the Velcro strap around his/ her ankle, he/she must bend over and make sure the chip passes within a foot of each timing pad. The last runner of each team must wear the timing tag for scoring the overall team finishing time.

Shuttle buses will be provided from Veterans Park to the relay exchanges zones. You must be wearing a marathon relay race number to board the bus. Spectators are not allowed on the marathon relay shuttle buses. Shuttle service is only available between Veterans Park and the designated relay exchange point. You cannot ride the shuttle from one exchange point to another without going back to Veterans Park.

The Marathon Relay shuttle buses will leave approximately every 20 minutes as needed. You should arrive at the Veterans Park shuttle stop at least one hour before you expect to start running your leg of the relay. You are responsible for getting to the exchange zone on time.

WATCH THE EXCITEMENT

FROM LOCAL HOT SPOTS Tulsa and the Williams Route 66 Marathon course offer fun and unique viewing areas for family and friends to cheer on their favorite participant. The start line offers music, excitement and race announcements. The marathon, half marathon and marathon relay all start at 8 a.m., so regardless of the race, spectators can watch all runners begin their journey near 7th Street and Main.

The Brookside neighborhood provides sidewalks for spectators to congregate, as well as restaurants, bars and coffee shops for refreshment (between 31st Street and 41st Street on Peoria Avenue.)

The Brady District in downtown also offers dining options and entertainment for spectators. The Center of the Universe Detour (on the Boston Avenue overpass between 1st Street and Archer) is a party atmosphere with live music and fans to cheer on the runners who chose to run an extra .03-mile in the marathon.

The University of Tulsa campus offers great race viewing, and the first mile through the TU campus (and mile 21 of the marathon) is the Marcus Takach Memorial Mile. Cascia Hall Preparatory School is a beautiful high school campus in midtown Tulsa (2520 S. Yorktown) with rolling green spaces and historic architecture.

As organizers prepared for the sixth running of the Williams Route 66 Marathon, presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, special attention was paid to incorporating sustainable efforts where feasible.

“We have an environmentally conscious board and a director specifically devoted to tracking our sustainable efforts and searching out ways for us to make our race as green as possible,” said Chris Lieberman, executive director of Tulsa Route 66 Marathon, Inc. “Our goal is to set an example for our participants and other events by minimizing our carbon footprint and being as environmentally friendly as possible while still putting on the best race for our participants.”

The marathon’s efforts have not gone unnoticed with a recent invitation from the Council for Responsible Sport to become a founding member of Sports Events Community of Practice to help lessen the carbon footprint of other sporting events.

Additionally, the Council for Responsible Sport will evaluate this year’s races to determine the Route 66 Marathon’s certification level as a green sport.

To qualify for certification, the marathon must meet various requirements in six categories: waste; climate; equipment and materials; community and outreach; health promotion; and innovation.

Efforts that have been taken to provide a greener race include: • Reducing the use of supplies like paper and plastic as much as possible.

• Providing avenues for runners to participate such as recycling, opting out of receiving a participant shirt, and recycling used running shoes at the event.

• Offering a bike check at events and carpool, shuttle opportunities.

• Option for runners to purchase green tickets during registration used to purchase carbon offsets.

•Option for participants to purchase carbon offsets at the Tulsa Master Recyclers Booth at the Expo.

CANCELLATION, RACE ALTERATION POLICY & WEATHER POLICY

It is the primary goal of the Williams Route 66 Marathon to provide and ensure a safe event for participants, volunteers and community attendees alike. We will be diligent in not exposing the participants, the volunteers or the community at large to any undue risk in the production and/or execution of the event. We understand the commitment the participants have made in entering the race, however, the decisions regarding race cancellations and/or alterations will be based on the larger community safety as well as the participants. Moreover, if community resources are threatened, we will act to protect them from unnecessary stress.

When weather conditions or other physical conditions present a danger to the participants as a whole, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials maintain the right to cancel the race.

Less threatening conditions could cause alteration of the race and/or the race course or length of the race to further ensure participant, volunteer and community safety. The conditions fall under the “Act of God” – and will not result in refunding of any race entry fee or future race credits. The staging of an event of this magnitude places large financial burden on the Williams Route 66 Marathon organization prior to the event date. Thus, in the event of a forced race cancellation or alteration, it is probable that the financial impact on the race would not be any different than if the race was held without compromise.

The Williams Route 66 Marathon officials, along with city officials, will make decisions regarding the

cancellation or alteration of the race.

Prior to the race, the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will apprise the participants of the weather conditions and how the on-course flag system designation works. Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will describe any changes that may be decided as a result of weather or other unsafe conditions.

In the case of a course evacuation, Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and city police and other city officials will communicate throughout the race course; and will direct participants to safe shelters to await transportation back to the start and/or finish area.

WEATHER

In regards to weather specifically, the Williams Route 66 Marathon has adopted the WBGT (wet-bulb globe temperature) index as its standard.

High heat and humidity, as measured in accordance with the American College of Sports Medicine recommendations for participation in endurance events, could result in cancellation of the event.

WBGT is considered ‘the most practical heat stress index characterizing the effect of a heat stress environment on the individual.’ WBGT was developed because the dry-bulb temperature alone does not provide a realistic guide to the effects of heat, inasmuch as it does not take humidity and heat radiation into consideration. WBGT is so-called because two of its input variables are wet-bulb temperature and a ‘blackglobe’ temperature; the third variable is the shielded dry-bulb temperature. The result of the WBGT will be indicated

on a flag system that will be displayed at the start and finish area as well as at the medical stations along the race course. The flag color will indicate the safety conditions based on the WBGT readings. They are listed in the table below.

At the starting line there will be a banner over the street. Suspended from that banner will be 2 flags, each 2’x3’.

The flag color will reflect the heat stress at that moment.

Medical aid tents will be stationed along the course. Each medical aid station will be flying a flag of a color corresponding to the heat stress at that time. The flag colors will change within 15 minutes of a change in the heat stress level. The staff at the aid station will know the meaning of each color flag.

The Williams Route 66 Marathon asserts that each participant assumes responsibility when entering an event with the potential risks that a marathon presents. All runners should be discerning of their own fitness level in their decision to enter the marathon and associated events. Furthermore, it strongly advises all participants to cooperate with directives given by Williams Route 66 Marathon officials and to assist in ensuring the safety of their fellow participants, particularly when conditions are less than ideal.

As the WBGT lowers in cold weather and EAS alerts go to yellow and/ or red it is strongly recommended that all runners slow their pace and reduce their risk of hypothermia when conditions warrant.

Extreme conditions that are high risk already place a burden on community health care systems, including emergency medical transportation, as well as hospital emergency room capacity. This burden encroaches on overall community safety and will be recognized as unnecessary and illadvised scenario of which the Williams Route 66 Marathon officials will not knowingly place the community in any such position.

Note: Please remember, in cold weather conditions, wear your bib number on your outer-most layer of clothing.

•Wear a waterproof or waterresistant outer layer.

•Avoid heavy cotton fabrics that absorb and retain moisture; opt for technical fabrics that shed moisture and wick water away from the body.

•Pay particular attention to keeping your hands, feet and head warm and dry as these are areas where a runner may exchange heat at a faster rate.

•Wear a running hat or visor to shield your eyes from potential rain and increase visibility.

•Due to the chance of rain/snow mix and/or ice, watch for standing water or icy patches on the roads and in the park.

•Exercise additional caution during the race to account for slick surfaces and limited visibility.

•Bring an extra change of dry clothing to change into immediately after the event, including dry shoes and socks.

•Pack extra clothing in a waterproof bag and check it at the gear check area.

•As wet weather can lead to hypothermia, if you experience persistent shivering during or after the race seek immediate medical attention at the nearest medical facility on course or at the finish line.

The Williams Route 66 Marathon offers 16 Gatorade/water stops on the marathon course. There are more than adequate amounts to ensure hydration under favorable conditions. If those conditions worsen, additional amounts will be prestaged and deployed, but it should be reasonable to assume that supplies may not be limitless due to logistical constraints entailed in such a distribution effort.

TAUW uses a comprehensive community-based decision making process to determine how funds will be invested in the community. This year, 140 trained volunteers invested more than 5,000 hours analyzing the needs of the community and studying the effectiveness of local programs; all

to ensure that contributions have the greatest possible impact. As human service needs grow and change over time, this process allows TAUW to direct resources where they will do the most good.

One race at a time.

Williams employee Laura McPartland has logged many miles since she ran her first 5K last year at the Williams Route 66 event. This year, Laura has set her sights on the half marathon. Her 2012 goal is to run the Boston Marathon through one of marathon’s charity programs.
