MR AS

T

he Millarville Racing & Agriculture Society (MRAS) has been in existence for more than 100 years, its origins are older than the Province of Alberta! The social and economic development of MRAS has been supported by generations of community members. These members remain linked through a shared vision stemming from the grass roots passion of families and friends. We are truly pleased with the local support. The non-profit society relies on its 400+ members and over 500 volunteers to carry out a tradition of building community and preserving our agricultural heritage. Our events: Races, Fair, Rodeo, Mini Chucks, the Farmers’ and Christmas Markets, The Run to the Market Half Marathon, and the Golf Tournament fundraiser, are all supported by volunteers, members, and you the community. The MRAS houses several essential facilities for community use and agricultural events. When our riding arena collapsed in 2018, a dedicated group of volunteers and our staff, together with community business investments, charitable fundraising and local government assistance gathered and we were able to rebuild. A larger multipurpose arena will house activities for generations to come. As funding becomes available, we will be able to complete phase three of the rebuild. As we look forward to the years to come, we are counting on the enduring spirit of members, both present and future, to take MRAS forward. We urge you to come out and participate as a member or a volunteer or simply support us by enjoying the Markets and events as a reflection of your community spirit. We are overwhelmed by all the support. Thank you and see you at the Track, Brent Foster, President

SPONSORSHIP

www.millarvilleracetrack.com

Sponsorship is what keeps our non-profit operational. It is the generous community members, neighbouring businesses, and corporate support from larger Alberta-based corporations that sustain us. The growth, improvements, emergencies, and events they support allow us to continue to do what we do here at the Racetrack.

WHO IS SUNNY GIRL? Along most highways in Alberta you can see the "Sunny Girl" logo announcing the existence of an Alberta Approved Farmers’ Market nearby. The Alberta Approved Farmers' Market Program supports farmers, food artisans, entrepreneurs, and artists who make, bake, or grow the products they sell. In order to be an Alberta Approved Farmers’ Market, 80 per cent of our vendors must make, bake or grow their products. The remaining 20 per cent is to allow for BC fruit and other items that add to the market mix. Resale of product is not allowed.

We encourage everyone to visit our web page and view the sponsorship packages on each of our events to get involved and financially support our efforts. Thank you for your ongoing support so we can keep this facility a community hub and a fun place to experience our agricultural heritage.

WELCOME

37 Years of Fresh Food & Family Fun! Treasuring Your Community

Melonee McKee, Market Manager

T

his may be your inaugural visit to our treasured Market, or, more likely, you are one of our valued regulars. Regardless, I need to take this moment to thank you for your desire and commitment to shop local, organic, fresh and handmade! By shopping from our vendors and retailers, you are investing in your own local economy, living a healthier lifestyle, and fostering growth in your own community. Each transaction you make from these small businesses is a precious treasure. Our vendors are your friends, family, and neighbours who have a vested interest on what materializes within their community. In turn, they are more likely to utilize many other independent and local businesses, services and farms themselves. This results in approximately 68 per cent of their earned dollar remaining in your community! Millarville Market’s diverse group of vendors create the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Our make it, bake it, grow it family offers an extensive variety of unique products created for you and the ones you love. By choosing to venture out to Millarville today and over the next few months, you will not only discover some great products but help to build a strong and successful community. Hoist that purchase high and show the world how much you treasure your community!

This is accomplished through encouraging direct conversations with farmers, educational and cooking activities, tastings, gardening, exercise classes, and arts and crafts. In addition to participating in weekly activities, Market Bud participants receive tokens to spend at the Market, encouraging them to make their own shopping decisions.

ears before becoming a regular at the Millarville Famer’s Market, Michelle Chick and her husband (then boyfriend) took their appetites and wanderlust on the road, spending four months backpacking and eating their way through southeast Asia: Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. “The food was amazing – like even the 25¢ noodle bowl on the side of the road was just the best thing I had ever eaten,” Michelle reminisced. Everywhere you go from the street vendors, small mom and pop shops to high-end restaurants, the exotic flavours of Thai food teases and draws you in with the freshness of lemongrass, turmeric, and coriander. This was a food experience Michelle couldn’t wait to recreate at home.

Michelle Chick, owner of Thai Manna at her hot food location located in Calgary.

“I love being able to put all our effort and excitement into this one thing and make it amazing.” On her travels she took cooking classes from the locals here and there and was hooked on the flavours and the creativity of Thai food. When she returned to Canada, her friends and family were welcome recipients of her creations. “At Christmas time I would make little makeshift kits for friends and the business idea came in bits and pieces,” Michelle said. The hard part about starting a business in food service, Michelle said, was being stressed about making sure they had everything the way it needed to be, following all the health rules and providing really good quality ingredients. “We do this one thing really well,” Michelle says of her desire to keep the food offerings simply Thai. “I love being able to put all our effort and excitement into this one thing and make it amazing.”

All the vegetables are sourced from the market. Walkers Own Produce, is one of Michelle’s go-to resources for the freshest, seasonal ingredients for her bowls. Whole, real ingredients, are not shelf stable for a reason so Michelle made it easy to store and prepare the food - just put the whole thing right into the freezer, coconut milk and all! For the last 10 years, Thai Manna curry kits have been available at various farmer’s markets around Calgary. “When I was starting out in farmers’ markets, I just loved grabbing a coffee in the morning, leaving the city and heading to the country. I loved being part of the buzz of the vendors. When it’s a good and successful market like Millarville, you can feel that it’s like a family and everyone is happy to be there and good to each other. You just want to be a part of it.” In December of 2018, Chick joined in Calgary’s newest food hall, Avenida Food Hall and Fresh Market, serving up hot Thai curry bowls at their first hot food location.

“I just loved grabbing a coffee in the morning, leaving the city and heading to the country. I loved being part of the buzz of the vendors. When it’s a good and successful market like Millarville, you can feel that it’s like a family ... you just want to be a part of it.”

When making Thai food at home, Michelle says the biggest mistake people make is taking shortcuts such as using more accessible ingredients rather than taking the time to get the right ingredients. Michelle encourages the home cook to take time to seek out authentic ingredients, it's worth the effort. Michelle also loves to take time for others and give back from all that she has learned. “One of the things I love doing is mentor meetings. In this market scene, we meet so many people and learn so much, I just want to share. So, a mentor meeting is where we just go get a coffee, no charge, no commitment, let’s just talk. “I just share my experience, help where I can. I don’t know it all, I’ll just feed them what I know.”

PAPAYA SALAD Recipe and image provide by Michelle Chick, Thai Manna

Unripened green papaya has crisp white flesh with very little flavor. It is prized mostly for its crunch and used primarily as a base for salads, most notably in the Thai classic som tam, where it serves as a backdrop for the powerful flavors of chile, lime, garlic, and fish sauce. Jícama and seeded cucumber make good substitutes if green papaya is unavailable.

prep time: 20 mins | yield: 4 serving

www.millarvilleracetrack.com

INGREDIENTS:

14

2 cups green papaya 1 cup carrot 6 cloves garlic, crushed 2-3 chilies 3 tablespoons fish sauce 1 tablespoon palm sugar 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts 1 cup cherry tomatoes 1/3 cup green beans ¼ lemon cut into small cubes

Dressing: Whisk fish sauce, palm sugar, lemon juice, finely chopped thai chilies and garlic. Set aside. The Palm sugar may take some time to dissolve. Return to your dressing to stir and crush as needed. Cook beans in salted water for about 5 minutes until tender but still crisp. Cut into 2-inch pieces. Set aside. Peel your green papaya and carrots then, using a julienne peeler or cheese grater, shred 2 cups of papaya and 1 cup of carrot. Place shredded pieces in a large bowl and gently squeeze and crush papaya/carrot mix by hand. Cut tomatoes into halves and add to papaya mix along with cubed lemon and prepped green beans. Add dressing and gently crush your ingredients while tossing. Garnish with peanut and serve with Thai sticky rice, grilled chicken or Thai Mana Laap kit. routes media special publication

1.

SEE THE WHOLE MARKET

2.

SHOP EARLY

Take the time to stroll through the whole market before you get started. You’ll have a chance to scope out all the new products, fresh veggies and plan your shopping strategy. Remember, we have a lot of part-time vendors that attend on random market days, so visit often and take the time to explore.

3.

PLAN, AND SHOP OFTEN

4.

MAKE YOUR MARKET VISIT AN EXPERIENCE

5.

6. BE CURIOUS

Farmers are happy to engage and it helps if you know which questions to ask. For example you may want organic produce. Many farms are growing their food organically but opt out of the expensive certification. Instead of opening with, “Is it organic?” try asking, “Do you use pesticides?” or “How do you raise your animals?” Don’t be afraid to ask for advice on choosing items and how to prepare something new.

It’s tempting to go overboard and go home with way too much food. It’s such a tragedy if it goes to waste. Keep your fridge stocked with the freshest produce by shopping the Market weekly. The Market is a great place to bring your out-of-town visitors or shop with a friend for a day out. Take time for a coffee, live music, experience a food demonstration or just enjoy the simple hum of a busy market day. We now have food trucks - different ones every week.

7.

KNOW YOUR MAKER, BAKER AND GROWER

Artists, crafts people, farmers, bakers, cooks and food artisans all have a story behind what they do and why. Inviting them to share their stories makes your Market experience that much more satisfying; you go home with wonderful products and a dose of inspiration.

BUY IN SEASON - IT'S WHAT WE DO BEST

It’s always tastier and healthier to buy food at the peak of its season. Check out the seasonal guide for a list (page 18) of when your favorite local fruits and vegetables are in season. To preserve your produce, try freezing, canning, fermenting and drying/dehydrating. Different techniques lend themselves best to different foods.

Giving back: Your money goes a long way in this community. The $3 parking fee goes to support local youth, agricultural programs and facilities for non-profit organizations. When you buy from vendors your money supports families, farms, artists and small business owners. Parking passes availabe for $25/10 pass.

For the very best selection, get to the Market first thing in the morning. You’ll get first choice on food that was in the ground sometimes only hours earlier. Market vendors do a great job of having lots of stock and try their best not to run out.

FE AT UR E

PIE Sunday

- A Slice of the Good Life By Sandra Wiebe

F

www.millarvilleracetrack.com

or Annie and Herb Froese, growing up in southern Ontario Sunday afternoons held one strong shared memory: family, music and lots of homemade food. Herb, a school teacher and Annie, an artist and gallery owner, moved to High River looking for this same sense of community. It was a post-flood economic growth workshop in 2013 where the couple was encouraged to find creative ways to sustain the Gallery business, as well as help rebuild a community in duress. They drew upon Herb’s upbringing and experiences working long hours beside his father, a baker. The answer – Pie Sunday! "It’s become a real heart thing, we realized we’ve re-created what we had as children on the farm in the wintertime. Grandpa would play his squeezebox, dad would play the harmonica and we all sang. We always had tortes as a special dessert."

20

While Herb got busy baking in the kitchen, Annie asked luthier Chuck Shifflett to organize local singer/songwriters such as Ethan Collister, Cathy Cook, and Mike McRorie to play in the historic-home/Art Gallery on Sunday afternoons. Like in the movie, Field of Dreams: if you build it - they will come. Guests arrive as the doors open and pies sell out quickly. With the sweet tooth satisfied, visitors enjoy the curated artwork and linger in the yard, taking in good company, the garden and the shade of the tree-filled yard. The result: more traffic to the Gallery, a stable secondary income and a homecoming, a place where strangers become family. Every Sunday is Pie Sunday. Pies are all baked in-house with love from Herb. Gluten free, dairy-free and keto options available. Art and Soul Gallery, 20 -6 Ave SW, High River. noon - 5pm

hen Barbara Leighton called on her neighbours to help her start the Leighton Foundation in 1974, she dreamed of turning her beautifully crafted home into an art gallery where people would feel comfortable and inspired by the art and nature that surrounded them. She designed and built the home with her late husband A.C. Leighton, one of the founders of the Alberta Society of Artists and Banff School of Fine Arts, but she knew that their legacy could be greater than just a physical space with a great view. Barbara moved an abandoned local schoolhouse onto her property and fixed it up, converting it into a warm and welcoming art studio for public use. She strongly believed that anyone could be an artist, if only they had the opportunity to explore art until finding at least one medium they truly loved. Forty-five years later a small but devoted staff, dedicated Board of Directors, and a strong community of passionate supporters and volunteers all work hard to ensure that the Leighton Art Centre stays true to Barbara's hopes and dreams.

The Centre is open to the public year-round and offers a wide range of art and nature-inspired programming, from contemporary art exhibitions to festivals and art sales, school field trips to professional artist workshops, summer day camps to museum exhibitions. Located just 15 minutes from Millarville Market, Leighton Art Centre - a designated Alberta Historical Resource and an Alberta Museums Association Recognized Museum - houses a vibrant and ever-changing display of Alberta’s artists, both past and present. As a valuable part of the Foothills and Calgary art and educational communities, the Leightons’ legacy continues to thrive and grow, under the steady gaze of Alberta’s indomitable Rocky Mountains. routes media special publication
