elcome to our 2017 Millarville Farmers’ Market! I’m the new Executive Director here at the MRAS and absolutely delighted to be among this vibrant, agricultural rich environment that brings us back to our roots and allows us to take a deep breath and enjoy this beautiful countryside. I have lived in the area for 19 years and come from a Calgary downtown corporate environment in the legal sector with years of experience in both entrepreneurial endeavors and event planning. My focus has moved from an international corporate focus to community minded efforts and I’m loving this Community. Please stop into the office and say hello! Last year our four-day Christmas Market, attracted a whopping 23,690 visitors! Our Children’s Only Store was a huge success again this year! Mrs. Claus welcomed children to shop on their own and find delightful treasures for their friends and family. All items were donated and our happy shoppers left with candy canes and gift shopping in hand. Proceeds were donated to the Black Diamond, Millarville and Turner Valley schools in support of their student lunch programs. Although MRAS is a not-for-profit society, it never hesitates to seize an opportunity to invest in families and give back to our community! The volunteer effort to organize, not only our Christmas Market but our major events all year long is, without doubt, our biggest asset here at the MRAS. Without the countless hours of organizing, setting up, running and tearing down by these committed individuals, it just could not happen. Our team of people from local user groups, who are ready and willing to collect our gate admission, man our Information Booth, sell 50/50 tickets and clean up the grounds after events, do not go without mention. These groups share our facilities throughout the year and return the favour by signing up and stepping up every time we need them. This season is set and full of many family oriented, agricultural related, community supported and heritage encompassing events during our Millarville Farmers’ Market Season!
Our Half Marathon will kick off our 2017 Market Season on June 17th and is always well attended and a reminder to keep our running shoes ready to go to the Market! Our well attended July 1st Races will run in conjunction with our Farmers’ Market this year. Be sure to get your VIP tickets from our Information booth or MRAS offic. Our three-day Millarville Heritage Rodeo is heating up and embraces our family, community and heritage. Our opening evening will start with our Heritage Rodeo, the crowning of the 1st Annual Millarville Heritage Princess prior to the Friday evening Family Cabaret featuring Domino. Saturday’s Rodeo will be a day full of educational, agriculture and heritage booths, a Kids Zone, Beer Garden, our 2 p.m. Rodeo and wrapping up with our Family Cabaret featuring Drew Gregory. Sunday’s Rodeo at noon will determine our Millarville Heritage Rodeo Champions! The August 18th and 19th will be another exciting Priddis & Millarville Fair weekend. Don’t miss this cultural, heritage rich and agricultural experience, hosting a Farmers’ Market both days! You can take this all in and camp here for on weekends at our on-site campground. Reservations can be made online through our website! Here at the MRAS our heartbeat is the dedicated people who make us a success. To the event organizers, the market vendors, our MRAS members, our countless volunteers and dedicated sponsors, we thank you. We could not do what we do without YOU.
See you at the Market!! Lisa Lloyd MRAS Executive Director *For further details, to learn about volunteer opportunities or become a MRAS Member and save the admission to all of our MRAS events, please go to our website. You don’t know what you’re missing.

WELCOME
Celebrating 35 Years of MARKET FUN!
W
elcome to the 35th year of the Millarville Farmer’s Market and year six of this little magazine. We are delighted to share with you what we have curated this year and to introduce our new Farmers’ Market Manager Stacy Schmaltz-Knox. Although the dynamics of the Market vary from year to year, the artisans that stock our market are always energetic and we are excited to see our Vendors each year. They are dedicated, experienced and committed to sustaining local markets with locally produced and grown items - something that seems to mean more to visitors with each passing year. Each year our vendors bring a wide variety of healthy, creative options to feed and inspire the diverse Market goer. Everything from traditional country creations, horseshoe metal art, kombucha tea, salsas, fresh cut flowers, a variety of art, baked goods, curio wood pieces, and handmade crafts, to bath and body products. Be sure to visit our Information Booth if you would like to utilize the interactive map system to find your favorite Vendor or purchase Raffle tickets for our Fair Raffle.
Kids Kash Program Again this season we offer a healthy food choice rewards program for kids aged four to 12 years old. For every $2 healthy fruit, veggie or protein purchase made from a participating vendor, consumers receive a stamp on their personal punch card. Once the card is full, after visiting either five vendors, or the same vendor over a five-week period, they will receive $5 Kids Kash. This reward money can be spent anywhere in the market, with any vendor. We believe this is a great way to get the kids more involved in the shopping, making healthy choices and decisions, gaining confidence in their financial transactions, and interacting on their own with the vendors.
In the Infield
We will be showcasing a few of our local user groups such as Millarville Musical Ride, Rocky Mountain Agility Club and Foothill Archery Club in the infield. Watch for dates and times for these free events on Facebook, Twitter and website. From our amazing family to yours, thank you for supporting the Millarville Farmers’ Market and supporting local! Happy Shopping!

Along most highways in Alberta you can see the "Sunny Girl" logo announcing the existence of an Alberta Approved farmers’ market nearby. The Alberta Approved Farmers' Market Program supports farmers, food artisans, entrepreneurs, and artists who make, bake, or grow the products they sell. In order to be an Alberta Approved Farmers’ Market, 80 per cent of our vendors must make, bake or grow their products. The remaining 20 per cent is to allow for BC fruit and other items that add to the market mix. Resale of product is not allowed.

FE AT UR E
EDIBLE By Julie Walker
Expanding your diet of greens with wild and weed plants. The garden ritual in the Chinook zone is to plant vegetable seeds or plants on or after the May long weekend. After six weeks of weeding, watering, and caretaking, you, at last, see signs of the fruits of your labour by early to mid-July. Meanwhile, if you have weeds and wild edible species in your garden, you could be harvesting some as early as late April, and enjoying the leaves and sprouts raw, cooked, sautéed or dried for later use.

andelion Greens can be an easy, healthy, homegrown, addition to spring salads. Young dandelion greens can be plucked from the yard from April to early June. The shade-grown leaves are the least bitter, but all leaves are a wonderful health boost to the digestive system, and they also cleanse the blood. Eat the greens with other lettuce greens, yellow or red peppers, radish, lime, and salt. Try a Mediterranean style salad, complete with feta cheese, tomatoes, onions, olives, and a squeeze of lemon. Early Blue Violets (Viola adunca) show up in full bloom as early as mid-May. The entire plant — stalk, leaves, and flowers — can be used raw in salads or smoothies, or as a colourful garnish. They can also be cooked like spinach (don’t overcook) or steamed with other greens. Early blue violet leaves are very high in Vitamins A and C; a quarter of a cup of these leaves has the same amount of Vitamin C as four oranges. These violets grow easily in gardens and even multiply there, thanks to ants. However, do not eat the roots or seeds of these plants because they contain toxins.
Lamb’s Quarters (Chenopodium album) was introduced to Canada by our European ancestors. The stalk, leaves, and seeds are tasty edibles from May to September. The leaves can be eaten raw, preferably mixed with other veggies or fruit such as cabbage, peppers, and apple slices. They can also be steamed or sautéed, or added to soups, stews, and smoothies. The texture and, some people say, the flavour, is much like spinach. I find it to be one of the most flavourful greens. Lamb’s Quarters contain some oxalic acid, so eat only small quantities raw. Cooking removes this acid, so then you can eat as much as you like. It is high in protein, calcium, potassium, beta-carotene, and iron. Stinging Nettle is an easily grown “super food.” It is so high in nutrients, such as vitamins A, D and K, that your body will store any extra vitamins it does not need at the time. It is also high in minerals, including iron, potassium, silica, and calcium. The Nettle also contains pro-Vitamin A, the Vitamin B complex, Vitamin K1 and Vitamin C, which can help the body absorb the iron and other minerals found in the plant. It is worth knowing that if the leaves are routes media special publication

is also an amazing blood coagulant, so, after rubbing the plant in your palms, put it on the cuts. As well as stopping the bleeding, it will promote healing. This may be the first time you have heard of Yarrow’s healing qualities, but the knowledge has been around for centuries; Achilles used it to heal the wounds of his soldiers at the battle of Troy. Please be careful to choose plants that have not been exposed to fertilizer or other harmful toxins. Julie graduated from U of C with a Physical Education Degree, majoring in Outdoor Pursuits. As she came know the landscapes of southwest Alberta more intimately, the native plants and their uses became her passion. She founded her company in 2004 and has been introducing people to the plant world ever since. Working as Outdoor Guide and Nature Educator, she runs programs for schools and adults, including SAIT cooking school, River Cafe and Heather Mountain Lodge.

harvested at their prime, they are high in protein. Often the plant will grow two leader stalks, allowing for more leaves. Because it is self-seeding, it can be sustainably harvested if you leave enough flower stalks behind for it to go to seed. Don’t worry about the stinging hairs on the leaves; they are destroyed by cooking, heating, or drying. The Nettle is great in soups and stews, and it can be used as a spice in any dish. It also makes wonderfully refreshing tea. I harvest them wearing leather gloves and use scissors to snip off the top three-quarters of the plant. Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) is best used as an infused tea, rather than as food. It helps to make us sleep because it quiets our busy brains, and it also relieves flu-like symptoms. However, it is not a replacement for medication. Yarrow is handy to have in the garden because this is where you might need its first-aid qualities. This marvelous plant takes the sting (and the poison) out of a wasp or bee sting. If you have been stung, simply rub the plant in your palms to release the juice, then apply to the affected area. Yarrow can even be used to make a non-toxic bug spray. It

any a hot summer day during my childhood was spent wandering the riverbanks with my mother with an ice cream bucket and binder twine or an old belt tied to my waistline. Her bribery - 25 cents per each bucket filled - was enough incentive for me and off I went in my own direction without a care. I may have been financially motivated but I believe it was therapeutic, even meditative therapy, for my mother, as well as a much-deserved escape from the other children and duties at home. My mother loved nature and took every opportunity to teach us the value of home grown and foraged food. There was likely never a summer camping trip that did not involve stopping to gather fresh, low bush blueberries or the tiniest, tastiest strawberries! These precious gems, unlike anything in a grocery store today, made more than a simple and healthy dessert, they made sweet memories.
Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Before baking, remove from fridge, let sit for 15 minutes before rolling it out. This should make 2 crusts, one for the top and one for the bottom. Cut a few slices into the top crust and brush with an egg wash (1 egg blended with a bit of water). This will brown your crust nicely. As mom says "bake until done"... brown on top and stickly gooey goodness oozing out! (or about 45 minutes convection oven at 350).
SIMPLE FILLING Mix together 4-5 cups fresh Saskatoons 2/3 cup granulated sugar- more or less, to your liking Lemon zest 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp flour 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon Top with 4 tablespoons of butter, placed randomly.
* Saskatoon berries (Amelanchier alnifolia), native to North America, look much like blueberries but have a nutty almond flavor. They are also high in fiber, protein and antioxidants. They will continue to ripen after they are picked to a sweeter, softer fruit.

ONE LAST CAST:
Reflections of an Outdoor Life By Bruce Masterman, High River
O
ne Last Cast (published by Rocky Mountain Books) is a collection of soul-touching and evocative stories about author and outdoor enthusiast Bruce Masterman’s experiences in wild places and with wild critters. An award-winning Alberta writer, journalist and storyteller, Masterman has been a passionate outdoors enthusiast for more than five decades and has explored Alberta’s natural world while fishing, hiking, hunting, snowshoeing, camping or just sitting on an old weathered stump watching the river flow. One Last Cast is a compilation of his writings, some never before published, others drawn from newspapers, magazines and books to which Masterman has contributed. The stories are about place and landscape, intertwined with the rich experiences and people the author encountered along the way. One Last Cast is a literary journey that speaks to outdoor aficionados of all stripes – anglers, hunters, hikers, wildlife watchers, snowshoers, anybody who enjoys and takes comfort in being involved in nature, whether in an urban park or deep in the wilderness or even while dreaming about it from the comfort of an armchair.

Alberta can be a harsh climate and as much as we would love to source all our food and other products within 100 miles – it’s just not possible. This is where creative and resourceful locals seek the best of world markets to bring us some amazing products, some we couldn’t imagine life without them! Here is a sample of some worldly wonders at the Market each week.
Big Blue Moma bigbluemoma.com
www.millarvilleracetrack.com
Big Blue Moma began in 2012 after a trip to Ghana. Owner Kari Wylie, a graduate from the textiles department at Alberta College of Art + Design, was naturally drawn to the vibrant colours and artful handiwork of the crafts people in the markets. At first, she thought that a simple import company would allow her to share what she had discovered, but the idea quickly evolved into an art studio and jewelry making.

Kari travels often to Ghana to visit the homes and workshops of her trading artist partners. She describes her business as a “conscious and thoughtful company,” carefully considering the impact of every decision, and paying fair market prices directly to the artists. All products are made in Canada, except for the baskets, and are available at bigbluemoma.com and at other Alberta markets and festivals.

Crickle Creek Coffee cricklecreekcoffee.com
Waking up to a three-shot espresso with a bit of hot milk is what kick starts the day for Nancy Tynan, owner of Crickle Creek Coffee located near Priddis. Every Tuesday morning the roasting room at Crickle Creek comes to life and the space fills with an aroma that, for some, is the very elixir for life. Roasting locally, with fresh, sustainably grown, rainforest alliance, organic, UPZ, and Fairtrade, is the norm for most small roasting companies (300-2000 lbs/week). But what sets Crickle Creek apart from the others is their connection to each customer, roasting to order and hand-delivering a fresh roast to the customer's homes, offices, restaurants and shops.
Esssence of the Nile essenceofthenile.ca
Essence of the Nile produces 100 per cent natural, handmade, cold-process soaps, (similar to French Milled), and are blended with essential oils and natural spices. The couple have expanded their product line to creams and lotions made from both the oil and plant-based sources. These products, perfect for our skin against dry prairie weather, can be found the Market and other Christmas fairs and markets in and around Calgary.

Bob and Patricia Clark, began raising ostriches and emus for their meat to help feed their growing family, more than 20 years ago. When a friend suggested that she try making soap from the rendered belly fat of the bird, not only was a business born, but a best-selling natural face cream as well.
