Welcome to the

MILLARVILLE FARMERS’ MARKET

y name is Melonie McKee and I have been employed at the Millarville Racetrack since September 2011; however, this is my first season as the Farmers’ Market Manager. I moved to the area nearly nine years ago and my family and I have been enjoying the Millarville Market experience since we relocated to the foothills from Canmore. We instantly became a part of the “local food movement,” obtaining our food from farmers within our local communities. How did I become a locavore? As a consumer, I recognized I was receiving the highest quality and largest variety of fresh and/or organic food products currently available in the area. Produce purchased at your local farmer’s market has often been picked within 24 hours of your purchase. This freshness not only improves the taste of your food, but also retains the nutritional value that declines over time. More importantly when you buy from local farmers you give them an economic reason to stay open. This keeps money in your community, which stimulates your community’s economy and in turn draws potential residence and economic growth within the community as a whole. Purchasing locally produced foods is incredibly beneficial to you, local businesses, your family, the environment and of course your taste buds! With all that being said, we also have a plethora of local food artisans, handmade crafts of all mediums, art, jewelry, a variety of meat producers, bakers, musicians, an amazing concession and little bits of one-of-a-kind items, which give the Millarville Farmers’ Market an extremely stimulating atmosphere. I want to thank you all for supporting local people whether this is your very first time discovering this gem of a market or your thirty-first year. Without your support, none of the above would be possible.

OUR FUTURE By Bill Jackson, President Millarville Racing & Agricultural Society

he Millarville Racing & Agricultural Society (MRAS) has been in existence for more than 100 years, its origins older than the province of Alberta itself. As the years and generations have come and gone, the social and economic development of both the MRAS and our surrounding community has remained intertwined through a shared history as well as programs and services built from the grassroots up. Our non-profit society has flourished and grown through the last century because we have always taken pride in providing programs and facilities for the young people in our community. Many of of these young people had parents, grandparents and great grandparents who faithfully served as members and volunteers in earlier eras, setting an example for the next generation to follow. We rely on more than 100 members and over 300 volunteers to carry out our tradition of building community and preserving our agricultural heritage. Our main events: the Races, the Fair, the Rodeo, the Market, and the Christmas Market are all important platforms for realizing this vision. Our newest addition, the Millarville Run to the Farmers’ Market Half Marathon is an event we hope to see grow into a strong and vibrant annual event that will further strengthen our community spirit. As a society, we know we have much to do if we hope to remain relevant in our community into the next century, particularly while continuing to embrace the traditions and values of our founders.

The facilities at MRAS have become pivotal focal points for community user groups while continuing to bear the weight of more than 100,000 visitors who pass through our gates annually. To keep up with our current demand, and to achieve our bold new vision, we will be looking to upgrade our facilities and programs steadily over the coming years. As we ponder our history, we marvel at the spirit of commitment and cooperation it took to bring MRAS to this extraordinary milestone we celebrate today. From 1905 when the freshly formed Race Club bought the land, to 1907 when the Fair came into fruition, to 1951 when the Hall Association formed the MRAS, it has been a remarkable feat each step of the way. Today, as we embark on the next wave of growth, we are counting on the enduring spirit of members past and present to take us to the heights we are aiming for. We urge you to come out and participate as a member or a volunteer or to simply support us by enjoying the Markets and Events as our gift to the community. Our Vision: To be an organization in which all members take pride and ownership in a self-sustaining, progressive and dynamic centre for the community that preserves its history, traditions and natural environment to promote rural and agricultural experiences in a welcoming and co-operative manner.

Event Type: Family Events, Sporting Events, Shopping and Style

Enjoy a fun filled day of family entertainment at the 108th Annual Millarville Races. The day features non-stop action including a beer garden, a smaller version of the Millarville Farmers’ Market, Kid’s World, and of course, horse racing action. To start the day locals race each other for bragging rights in the popular Stock Horse Race, and elegant ladies show off their historical skills in the Side Saddle Race. If you’re the gambling kind, you can place your pari-mutuel bets for any of our sanctioned races brought to us by Horse Racing Alberta, showcasing races by Paint Horses, Quarter Horses and Thoroughbred Horses. In between each sanctioned horse race, children of all ages can race in the infield in sack races, three legged races, and foot races. Featured again this year at the end of the day is the popular Pack Horse Race. Kid’s World will delight the young ones with pony rides, face painting, obstacle course, money hill, and a mechanical bull. Don’t miss out on the oldest annual event of the Millarville Racing & Ag Society!

Event Type: Sporting Events, Family Events This beautiful, and mostly rural, point-to-point half marathon (21.1 km) runs from Black Diamond through Turner Valley and finally ending at the Millarville Farmers’ Market for opening day. Invite friends and family to cheer as you cross the finish line at southern Alberta’s largest outdoor Farmers’ Market, and then join them in finishing your morning with great food, music and shopping. There is a complimentary shuttle bus service for runners between the Millarville Racetrack and Black Diamond both pre and post-race. All participants get a unique hand-made finishers medal and wick t-shirt.

For more than a century The Priddis & Millarville Fair has been one of the last, great, traditional, old-time Agricultural Fairs in Canada. Founded in 1907 and held every year since, the Fair today is a wondrous extravaganza for kids in particular, with a Kid’s World, a petting zoo, big horses, small horses, hayrides, roping competitions and ribbons awarded in junior events ranging from photography to baking to 4-H.

Join us for a country Christmas Market filled with fabulous arts, crafts, decorations, artisan food, gifts and more. This event takes place indoors and out and will consist of much family fun with free hayrides, Santa’s workshop, pony rides and photos with Santa.

The day is a big one for adults as well, including a multitude of competition ribbons and a parade, not to mention a full day integrated with the famous Millarville Farmers’ Market. Coming out to the Fair is only half the fun the other half lies in participating in the Fair by putting your best crafts, baking, grains and grasses and animals up for those all-important winning ribbons.

Farmers are happy to engage and it helps if you know which questions to ask. For example you may want organic produce. Many farms are growing their food organically but opt out of the expensive certification. Instead of opening with, “Is it organic?” try asking, “Do you use pesticides?” or “How do you raise your animals?” Don’t be afraid to ask for advice. If you see something that looks interesting but you don’t

New in 2013, thanks to funding by Legacy Oil & Gas is the picnic and rest area. Relax here, have a bite to eat or take shelter from poor weather. Lining the Legacy Picnic Area, you’ll find jewellers, photographers, potters, stone artists and more. This is also the home of a few bakers, coffee roasters and popcorn vendors. Beneath the Event Grandstand you will find booths with our food artisans. Each week you can smell, sample and indulge in an amazing variety of food products - jerky, jams, fruit pies and tempting desserts. Local art calendars, hand-knit goods, and body products are tucked in amongst all the tasty goodies.

Inside this building you’ll discover all the valuable products that need to be covered from the inclement weather of the foothills. Clothing, handmade jewelry, beautiful photography and other treasures are found weekly in this only indoor area of the Market. Tucked into the trees is the garden and fire pit area and, in our opinion, theses are the hidden gems of the Market. It is home to leather artists, sewing, glass art and other creative finds that are great to explore, touch and buy. Many part-time vendors are located throughout the garden and fire pit area, so visit often to see who’s new.

The name says it all. This area is along the rail of the racetrack as you enter the market place. Here you will find tasty ranch-raised beef, bison, elk and pork. Mixed into this area you will also find wonderful sausages, treats for your pets, gourmet pizza, and ethnic foods from around the world.

At the south end of the grandstand are the large BC fruit trucks of the marketplace selling delicious fruits from the Okanogan Valley. Along with the fruit trucks, you’ll find berry vendors, goat cheese products, local honey and meat and wonderful garden plants with seasonal hanging baskets.

The arena is primarily used for equine activities; however, on market days we take over the outdoor perimeter for vendors. It is home to some permanent vendors and craftspeople that work with mediums like wood, concrete, metal and outdoor garden items. You may find other treasures like campfire tools, handmade soaps, repurposed furniture, custom clothing and an area to pan for precious gems and collectible fossils. We might be a bit biased, but we really think that each area is amazing and worth the time to explore every nook and cranny! routes media special publication

hen most people think about a farmers’ market, myself included, they almost immediately think about the fresh produce, ranch raised meats, and seasonal fruits. As I get ready for another great season at the Market, I am starting to get excited about something that hasn’t been a primary shopping focus of mine until recently - food artisans! Everywhere I stroll in the market I find wonderful hand-prepared food products that add so much to my home dining experience. Many food artisans find their weekly home under the grandstand. In this area you will find a flurry of activity by customers chatting and experiencing some amazing edible art. Food artisans allow me to bring home a new experience each time I shop and inspire me to become more daring, creative, and fun in the kitchen. I encourage all of our market shoppers to take the time to discover some of the amazing artisan food products found in Millarville, to try a new item, bring home a treat and learn a vendor’s name each time you visit. n a small acreage, just outside of Raymond, a warm breeze softly brushes over sprouts of kale, spinach and garlic, while red-winged black birds chirp in the trees. Farming has always been the ideal job for Jerald Hiebert, a regular contributor to the Market. He loves getting the chance to be outside all day and connect with nature. “There’s something about being outside and breathing that fresh air that comes blowing over the mountains and across the prairies that kind of invigorates a person,” Hiebert says. For years, Hiebert has farmed a mere six acres of land and has managed to support himself, his wife and four kids. He began with a very minimum investment and farms with two old tractors that he paid a little over $1000 each. “I change the oil in the tractors regularly and they just keep going!” he says. “We try to live a simple life here,” Hiebert says. “I grew up on a farm and farming was something that was in our blood – if you wanted to have a good life, you were a farmer.” Much of this mind-set also comes from his

Mennonite culture, which he says reflects principles of sharing, caring and giving. Hiebert grows a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in which he does not use any herbicides or pesticides. It’s hard work for Hiebert because instead of using big machines to easily harvest his crops, he takes special care to handle most things by hand. “We dig the vegetables and gather them by hand, we wash them by hand and we package them by hand,” he says. “So there’s a lot of care that goes into these vegetables.” Although Hiebert’s true passion is farming, he says getting the chance to bring his produce to the Market is his highlight of the week. “Just to only be out here grinding around in the dirt you know,” he says, “the whole thing would kind of lose some of its excitement and interest.” Hiebert used to sell his produce at other markets until he discovered the Millarville Farmers’ Market, which he says he absolutely loves. “It’s a country atmosphere for one thing, and I also really enjoy the people,” he says, adding that he feels a deep sense of community and belonging at this market.
