Employee Profile – Rob Smith When you call Rovers North for parts or service assistance, you’ll likely speak with Rob Smith. If your question involves service, repairs, or offroading in a Series Land Rover or Defender, he’ll be advising you from experience. He’s a native Vermonter who seemed destined to wind up at Rovers North. Born in Burlington, Rob grew up in the town next door, Essex Junction, and still lives there. And Westford is but one town northeast of Essex Junction. Rob grew up back when Land Rover only sent the Range Rover to the US market. By the time he finished his business studies at Champlain College and a community college, Land Rover was still considering what to do with the Defender for the US market.
runs great for me and I really enjoy being in it.” He remains a huge enthusiast of the Defender. “If I were president of Land Rover, I’d want them to bring back the Defender to the US market, relatively unchanged from the early ‘90’s model. The ‘94-‘95 Defenders are just one step up from a Series vehicle. They have the OBD diagnostic box that can be checked inexpensively and easily to help identify fault codes.” If you wanted to buy a Defender, Rob advises looking at the chassis and firewall first for corrosion. Originality is now an issue, too. After that, check out the engine and drivetrain. Fourth on his list would be electrical. Some interior bits are becoming harder to source, but operational and repair items remain in stock from
He became interested in Rovers North because “I loved cars. I knew nothing about Land Rovers when I took the job; I knew Jeeps, that was it. Soon after I started here, I went offroading with other staff members and saw first hand what a Land Rover could accomplish.” Soon after, he bought his first Land Rover, a ’69 Series II-A Bugeye. Rob remembers that “a customer walked into Rovers North with an offer to sell his car for $500. I bought it on the spot. It needed a lot work, but with guidance from more experienced staff members, I repaired it. Les Parker really helped me with the electrics. You can’t see the electricity – that’s why it’s so mysterious to me!” Rob sold his ’69 Series II-A for a ’70 Series II-A ex-MOD 109”, and then purchased his current Land Rover, a ’94 Defender 90, in 2000. He has installed Rovers North sill protectors and a Rovers North soft top, Old Man Emu heavy duty suspension and a fuel tank guard. He runs BF Goodrich All Terrain tires on his Rover. The Rover came with 52,000 and now has 94,000 miles on the odometer. “It
Land Rover through Rovers North. You may well have met Rob at east coast events such as the Mid Atlantic Rally in Virginia, the Southern New Hampshire Rally, and the British Invasion and RoverFest events in Vermont. He loves attending and participating but admits that “the 16 hour one way drivers to the MAR in a heavy duty suspension Defender 90 does wear me out! Otherwise, I’d love to attend more events.” “What’s the fun of the job? I’ve worked at Rovers North in shipping, purchasing and sales. I’ve been instructing for the 4x4 Centre off road school during the summers. I get to work with Land Rovers every day.” “I use my Defender for hunting and offroading. When you drive around in your Land Rover, nothing compares with it. Unlike the Hummer, it really can do what it looks like it can do.” _______ ________

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR [Sounds like just what the doctor ordered for a bum clutch. My experience with dodgy clutches in my Land Rovers is that the low gearing and low torque curve conspire to make speed shifting a difficult challenge in a Series Rover; it’s proven to be a lot easier in several British sports cars. Radial tires and parabolics can soften the impact of an MOD 109” in daily running – Mike, are you paying attention? –ed]
Dear Editor, Mike Koch related his ordeal resulting from a dead slave cylinder. As he’s now undoubtedly aware (since he works at Rovers North and gets input from his co-workers), driving without a clutch is distressing, but entirely possible. One starts the vehicle in first or second gear and then shifts by synchronizing the engine rpm with the propshaft rpm at a given speed. It becomes easy to shift up or down in this fashion. When stopping the vehicle, one places the transmission in neutral, shuts down the engine, and restarts in first or second gear. I have done this with innumerable standard shift vehicles over the past 50 years, for short and long trips. Using radial tires, different shocks, and parabolic springs will dramatically alter the handling of his MOD 109”, as it did mine, prior to its destruction by a huge oak tree during a storm. Perhaps one day I’ll own another. I’ve had three Series Land Rovers and loved every one of them. Lawrence Lippert, M.D Huntington, NY 6
Dear Editor, “What To Do in the Snow” by Jeffrey Aronson was a great article, but it ignores the elephant in the room. That is, why are Range Rovers (mine is a Classic) only average (maybe worse) in the snow? It’s not just a matter of tires; it seems to be a function of the transfer case not locking up, or not staying locked. My comparison vehicles are a couple of International Harvester Scouts and a GMC pickup. All had conventional 4WD with locking hubs and no positraction. All were better in the snow than the Classic. My solution has been to put a click or two on the parking brake to convince the transfer case that there is unequal traction between front and rear, but this only sort of works. I hope you’ll give me an honest reply and not tell me there is something wrong with the vehicle; it has been checked out every way possible. Plus, I’m not the only one to observe this. Other owners with experience in other vehicles share my opinion. Lee J. Dahle [Via email] [It’s hard to believe that the additional V-8 torque and coil spring suspension travel, so much better on a Range Rover than on a Scout or GMC pickup [or Series Land Rover] of similar vintage, does not produce the off-road results you want in snow. Given the number of Range Rover Classics that perform mightily at off-road events, I’m not certain I can agree fully with your conclusion. To my chagrin, Range Rovers have pulled my Series II-A out of mudholes or over ice floes all to o effectively. The
most recent Maine Winter Romp witnessed many Range Rovers and Discovery Series I’s [same drivetrain] proving themselves very effective in snowy conditions. When Rovers North organized the only winter climb up the Mount Washington Auto Road, Their Range Rovers performed superbly on the arduous and historic trek. The team found that at times, use of the high range gears was more effective than L1 or L2 in certain snow situations. Tire selection and air pressure do make a difference on the handling of all Land Rovers in snow situations; I’ve watched a Range Rover Classic bog terribly in snow all because the owner refused to air down his tires. I know that was the reason because Range Rovers who followed the trail leaders’ instructions went around him to help tow him up the trail. After 1990, Range Rovers incorporated a viscous coupling to lock the driveshafts. In 1993, Range Rovers used the ABS system as a form of traction control to further improve off-road ability. It’s still honest to query whether when you’ve had your Rover checked over, have these systems been checked, too? What do readers think of Lee’s observations? Are you also disappointed with your Range Rover Classic’s abilities in the snow? –ed] Dear Editor, I just wanted to thank you for the service Steve [Haskell] provided me today. I am the kind of person who pretty much likes to deal with just one person. Steve is the kind of guy who always remembers my name and who I am. No small task for him, I am sure. So when I had a chance to visit your shop, I just had to have lunch with him. It’s that personal touch for me that makes the difference between you folks and just price shopping the internet. Gustaf Kupetz Lead Driver, East Coast FJ Trail Teams [Steve bought you lunch when you visited Rovers North? He’s never bought me lunch
when I show up at Rovers North! There’s a very dedicated group of technical support staff in Westford and we agree they make a huge difference for Rover enthusiasts everywhere –ed].
Kelly Horn St. Joseph, MO [I always felt as though Ford copied the lines of the Discovery for its ill-fated Expedition, not the Explorer –ed]
Hello, I was hunting for some Land Rover information and came across wonderful advertisements for Land Rovers from the 1950’s. They were a delight to read. Enjoy and keep up your good work. You got me even more addicted to Land Rovers and I get even more crap from my wife! I wish I could have one of those 1950’s Land Rovers brand new but I am still happy to have my ’93 Range Rover Classic LWB that I got back in 2005, with only 54,800 miles, for $5,000. She has about 62,500 miles to date. D. Aaron Conway Minneapolis, MN [Through Land Rover parts support and the additional resources of Rovers North, you can basically rebuild a classic Series Rover so that it’s as “new” as when it left the factory. It’s a bit harder with Series I Land Rovers, given the number of unique and NLA parts on them. Land Rover Classic Parts and Rovers North can keep your Range Rover Classic original and authentic for years to come –ed]
Dear Rovers North, I’m the former owner of two Range Rover Classics and the current over of an 88” and a 109”, both RHD and extra cool. Thanks for your great magazine/catalogue and all the great service we’ve received from y’all. Stay warm up there! Jennifer Drugge Beaufort, SC [Who’s “y’all?” That’s a strange word up here. And if you need parts delivered to the coast, say next February, please ask for me directly! –ed]
Hey Ya’ll! What a wonderful magazine you have! I love reading about the wonderful times, places and adventures other folks have. Kelly Dunkelberger Berthoud, CO [Kelly, you live in Colorado, the home of the Solihull Society and the Rocky Mountains. You can have wonderful times and adventures, too. When you do, let us know about them –ed]. Dear Editor, Thanks for your help with parts and advice for my Defender 90 SW. Lucky for us, our 2004 Discovery (the one that doesn’t look like an Explorer) hasn’t needed anything yet, but based on our previous two Discoverys, its only a matter of time!
Dear Rovers North, I’m a Discovery I owner always looking for Series or Defender 110 project when dollars aren’t an issue. Plus, I know that Rovers North will be there for all my needs. Matt Parro Whitby, Ontario Canada [The growing strength of the Canadian dollar makes it easier than ever to purchase Rover parts from Rovers North. We’ll help you no matter which Rover model you choose for the future –ed.] Dear Rovers North, Thanks so much for your wonderful magazine/catalogue! Gail Ferguson Pottstown, PA [You’re welcome! –ed] Dear Editor, I love your magazine, especially the “Behind the Steering Wheel” section, but I love the articles, too. James Pitts Dallas, GA [James, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Of course, the publisher will believe that I conned you into writing such complimentary remarks –ed]
Dear Mark, Willie Nelson is a legend here in Texas. Some will immediately conclude that Texas must have a very small pool of legends from which to pick. Be that as it may, there is a line from one of Willie’s songs that says, “I know more ole drunks that I do ole doctors – so let’s have another round.” I got to thinking about that line in Willie’s song after reading the recent “Behind the Steering Wheel” article about Mr. Brian Carvey and his ole Rover. I think we could say “I know more old Rovers than I do ole Cruisers so let’s go out down the road.” Thanks, Mark, for all you and your crew, do. Leighton Ogg Houston, TX [Except for certain decisions out of the Texas Legislature, we never question Texas legends – we figure they’re true. Reading the “Behind the Steering Wheel” column has many readers reaching for another round, too –ed]. Dear Rovers North, Perhaps it’s time to run another article on safe practices with a Hi-Lift (type) jack. On page 25 of the Spring 2007 Rovers North News - the photo on the right hand side of the page. Certainly, there is a better example of jacking in the vast RN photo library. If not, let’s do a photo shoot. I hate to be one of “those types,” but you know exactly why I’m on about this. Best regards, Jeff Berg Malden, MA [Yes, Jeff, we share mutual friends who have suffered injury from unintentionally incorrect use of the farm jack. Our photo shows a Hi-Lift at work on a snowy field elevating a Defender while the crew has the front tire off the car. The jack handle is pointing out at 90 degrees, never a good move. I’m often getting stuck in off road situations, so maybe we can collaborate on that photo shoot –ed.] _______ ________

An Inconvenient Truth:
FROST IN FLORIDA! Story by: Sonja Palomino Photos by: Janet Poelsma
It’s the Day After Tomorrow in Davenport, Florida. Today is February 16 at the Wallaby Ranch, the new site for the Florida Winter Roundup. It’s a freezing Friday night. Now I know what you’re thinking… freezing… in Florida… yeah, right. Really, it was freezing! As the sun dropped, so did the temperature. By 11:00pm, frost had covered the tents of the assembled enthusiasts. Some gathered around the blazing group campfire to join in warm conversation about the day’s events. Several of us remained by the fire for several hours, mostly out of fear of walking away from the heat just to go into a cold tent and praying that your sleeping bag will be thick enough to keep in the body heat. Remember, we are Florida folk. At about 3:00am we stoked the fire by adding several large logs hoping that in the morning we would be
8
able to get it going with little effort. That night, the mercury kept dropping and didn’t stop until it was at 23 degrees. So much for our warm and fun in the sun Florida off-roading event! Earlier that morning, when it was much warmer, we brought our ’04 Discovery II and our ’67 Series II-A Land Rover, and joined over 300 Land Rover enthusiasts and 70 Land Rovers at the 6th annual Florida Rover Roundup. After five years of riding the trails in the Ocala National Forest, we decided a change of scenery would be nice. Wallaby Ranch is a world famous hang gliding school located in central Florida near Walt Disney World. It sits on over 500 beautiful acres. Over the past several years, Malcom Jones, the proprietor of the ranch, has hosted dozens of Land Rover customer appreciation days for dealerships throughout Florida. This year, his spectacular locale proved the perfect spot for our event. One of the benefits of this property is the seemingly unlimited amount of land The existing trails had names such as Proving Ground, Trek Trail, Safari Trail, and Emu. These trails consistently challenged the stock Land Rovers and the novice drivers, particularly after a good rain; however, this year we have been in a drought and all the trails that are usually under water were bone dry. Knowing that the chance of enough rain to soak the trails was unlikely, we altered some of the existing trails to make them more challenging, and even built a new one. We focused on improving the Trek Trail to use for our trials competition. Many obstacles were added and the trail was extended. This trail was designed to push the limits of the vehicles without incurring any damage.
We named our new trail “Jungle Trek.” This trail we built in a low lying area of the property that is usually under water. With the dry conditions, we were able to get in and remove all the trees that had fallen from the hurricanes over recent years. The entrance to the trail was a large mud hole. Friday night, everyone was able to get through by either powering through or hugging the edge. By noon on Saturday this was not the case. After a lot of spinning Mud-Terrains the mud hole became impassible. Only those with a winch dared to take this path; the rest chose to take the bypass. The bypass, although drier, was narrower and proved to be a technical challenge to many. Besides the enhanced trails and unlimited camping area, moving the Roundup to Wallaby Ranch proved to have other benefits as well. The biggest one being that we were able to set up competitions that all the participants could enjoy. That just was not possible the years before on public property. Saturday morning brought hope of a warm day. The sun was shining; people started coming out of their tents and RV’s to see just how much frost had accumulated on everything. Some joked wondering if anyone had an ice scraper. Ice scrapers in Florida are about as common as snow chains. As the frost melted away and the temperature climbed, the blood in the veins of the competitors started to flow. After the morning drivers meeting, they hurried to sign up for the events they wanted to compete in. The first event was the Boomerang GPS Challenge. It was limited to ten vehicles. The teams would have two hours to locate all the way-points and return to camp. The winning team took about 45 minutes while others took the entire two hours. Dave Zymowski of Orlando and his team took the gold in this event. Dave had plenty of time for a victory lap around the campsite in his ’98 Discovery Series II in full G-4 regalia, well before any of his competition arrived. After lunch, we had the Little Jackeroo children fun time. It started with a three legged race. The children picked their partners and off they went trying to be the first to cross the finish line, which happened to be a snatch strap. We even had several mamma and papa Jackaroos trying their luck in an effort to bring home the gold. Then off to learn some recovery techniques. With assistance from there parents, the smallest jackaroos learned how to hook up a recovery strap. The older children thought this would be easy until we introduced a blindfold. This may be useful someday when your recovery points are buried in soupy mud, heck, somebody has to hook up. Our favorite part of the children’s activity is when Jeff Wait had all the children pose for a picture on his ‘93 Range Rover. Although modified and used for off-roading, I believe this is the most abuse it gets. There are kids everywhere! On the roof rack, hanging out windows, standing on the bumpers all trying to catch the attention of the cameras. This has become a tradition of our event and next year we just may have to add another Rover to accommodate the growing number of children that attend the Rover Roundup. While we were still setting up the course for the Aussie Trials Competition, Land Rovers of all types started to line up. Everything from a stock Series II-A driven by it original owner, Gerry Atchrich, to heavily modified Defender 90s, tackled the challenge. As the drivers watched, you could tell that they were driving the course mentally
before it was their turn. All waited for their chance at a sweet victory, the ones with the modified trucks knowing that they had the upper hand on the unmodified ones. In the end, it came down to one thing, driver skill. William Aguillon, Port St. Lucie, proved to be the master of patience. He took first place in the Trials competition, winning with precise driving in his stock 2004 Discovery. Only the most competitive enthusiasts signed up for our final competition. The only modification required was a winch. The teams consisted of a driver and his navigator (aka. grunt). Adrenaline started flowing as the teams sat waiting for their chance at fame. At the word “Go” they all jumped out, pulling free-wheeling winch lines to an anchor vehicle. Between the winding of the winches, careering timbers, removing a tire, a combination of carrying and rolling the tire a great distance over a hill and back to see who would be the first to end the competition. With lots of sheer physical exertion, all competitors made it across the finish line. All in all, the task took just over 20 minutes to complete and the competion was won by Dimitri and Ricardo Mundarain. Dimitri lives in Boynton Beach and arrived in a 2004 Discovery II, also in G-4 Tangerine Orange. I guess this type of thing just runs in the Mundarain’s blood. We have already heard rumors that they will be back next year to defend this prestigious title. Pre-event training will be a must for next year’s event. We guarantee it! After all the excitement, it was time to slow down and enjoy some wonderful Southern BBQ prepared by Salty Hog. This went great with the live entertainment provided by Clint and Chad. Following dinner, we set up for our annual charity auction. Thanks to Rovers North and many other vendors that donated items, we were able to raise over $2,100 for The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. 100% of the auction proceeds are donated to charity each year. Trail rides continued late into the evening. One group remained out later then they planned when the differential on a Range Rover went bust. After a couple hours of towing and winching through the tight and technical part of Jungle Trek, they made it back safely. It had rained early Sunday morning before sunrise. Luckily it was nowhere near as cold as the night before. Although, it would have made it interesting to wake up with snow on the Land Rovers. Then we would have had to change the name to The Florida Winter Romp. See you next year. It will be warmer – we promise! First Impressions - “The Stoner” Story & Photo by Ray Scholl [Ray Scholl lives in Mason, NH, with Jenny, his wife, and their children Lindsay and Foster. He’s an IT professional who, with his family, built their house, maintain a “gentleman’s farm,” raise animals and refurbish automobiles. Their Land Rover project would have been impossible without their chief assistant and great friend, Ananth Kaitharam –ed.] Our Land Rover started life back in 1970 on a farm in England. A sheep farmer had used it as a workhorse for 25 years (hauling, shearing, etc.) before deciding to retire it from service. I never had the chance to meet him or to see the farm; I just remember what was relayed to me back in 1996 or so, when we decided to see what all the hype was about. A colleague of mine was visiting family in Leicester when he and a friend decided to put a few vehicles in a container and send them back to the US. It arrived here in March and he put it right on the road. He left it with me for safe keeping (knowing full well I would end up buying this beast) and I used it as a daily driver; mostly to the train station and for running errands. About a month later, it was registered to me and we were a Rover family! Well, it was not restored and certainly in need of a few repairs, but the next year went smooth enough. Inspection time was a surprise – swivel ball time! Once I got the parts, it was about two weekends of careful effort to replace the pieces and I think I did the front springs and a ball joint in the steering as well. Another year goes by, we drove and dragged it to Pennsylvania and drove some old strip mines, power lines, etc. and what a blast (until I got home and replaced the rear springs). Time continued to tick by; Mother Nature loves those crevices where dirt and moisture sit. You may have guessed – replace the gas tank. We have actually gone through two of them already. We moved to New Hampshire quite a few years ago and it seemed the extended ride to the train over the bumps in the Rover produced (or shook loose) a few kidney stones, thus, the nickname, “The Stoner.” The first spring was great – most vehicles would stop and stare at the mud at the end of the driveway, but my wife used it several trips a day to schools with the kids (since I only went out/in once a day I used the less capable vehicles). We did upgrade the driveway later, but if you haven’t played in axle deep mud I suggest you give it a try. Well, an old vehicle, plenty of miles, and exposure to the elements eventually take their toll. I did patch the rusty frame a few times, and then horror. I got the call – “it’s running fine, but should it sound like a diesel?” Time to bring it home and either rebuild the engine or get a replacement. I found a rebuilt (military specification - had to give up my generator and positive ground) and in another fun filled pair of weekends my truck was back on the road in daily use. Over more time, the long daily treks over the dirt roads took a new toll. The extra power from the rebuilt engine felt great to me but the transmission disagreed. So, I replaced the gear box/transfer case 12
with a rebuilt (I have all kinds of spares and cores). Now we were back to full strength and just in time. The grandparents wanted to spend time with the grandkids, so we left them back in Pennsylvania for a week. I took a few of the hottest days off and we traveled about 800 miles up through VT, across NH, and back home. With the top off and a cooler in the back, it was pure enjoyment. During this time an old friend decided he just had to pick up a 109”. I sent him to Rovers North and Mark Letorney outfitted him accordingly. While at a show further south, he came across an overdrive for sale and grabbed it for me. I still have yet to rebuild that, but someday, it will be bolted onto the transfer case. Well, ultimately the most crucial piece has been putting up with all the abuse. I planned a chassis swap for years but postponed the inevitable monetary and physical expense. The Rover had become less a daily driver and more an entertaining alternative, but still solid enough for errands and local trips. We were on the way back from soccer, a friend was taunting us, and we certainly would not let a Suburban get the best of us. We emerged victorious and basked in the glory until we got home and noticed the doors seem to “overlap” rather than close. No further postponement was possible. So in October, 2005 I had to take the Rover out of service. Finally, in April, 2006, my daughter, a friend, and I make the journey with my newly built trailer and load up a galvanized chassis. It sits in the grass for two months while we make preparations. Finally, during the late summer, we began the successful refurbishment of our Land Rover. When you do a frame-over, it’s smart to also replace the springs, shocks and check straps. It’s a good time, too for new brake lines, brake system components, swivel ball gaiters, and electrical wiring. We also refurbished the bulkhead, too. Thanks to Rovers North, I can keep this unique vehicle running and in original condition. While they are not for everyone, they certainly are fun if you don’t mind a rustic form of transportation. “The Stoner” started life on a farm in England and continues life on a farm in New Hampshire. It’s a great life for everyone! _______ ________

AMERICA CALLING SEND US THE ‘07 DEFENDER Story by: Jeffrey Aronson
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip arrived in Virgina for the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown colony and the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby. Before they left Great Britain I requested that they include a 2007 Defender in the royal baggage. Their last trip was in 1991; within two years, we had the Defender 110 NAS. Just in case history should repeat itself, put your order in now.

Consider grant theft auto. Think about illegal importation. Find a good lawyer now. Whatever it takes, this car is worth the risk. My shameless display of illegal behavior was matched only by the mewling and whining I undertook in a failed effort to get Rovers North to send me to England to test drive the latest Defender. Neither groveling nor begging moved the cold hearts of Westford. That’s forced me to drool over my laptop’s keyboard as I’ve gathered information on this latest incarnation of the iconic vehicle. Sixty years ago the Wilks brothers led the team that set down the basic elements of the Land Rover, a “stopgap” vehicle meant to bring in some cash while Rover geared up for postwar car production. Rover created an impressively strong frame underneath, lightweight aluminum alloy panels above, long-travel and rugged suspension, mated to a high torque engine and strong transmission with a two-range transfer case. It would go anywhere and accomplish most anything that you needed a machine to do. Over the decades, leaf springs gave way to coil springs, disc brakes replaced drum brakes, Panhard rods and radius arms secure the live axles. The wheelbase has grown all of 12 inches for the smaller model, and up to 23 inches for the longest wheelbase models. As a mobile tool, no other vehicle proved as rugged and long-lived. The Defender has long ceased to be treated as a car,
regardless of what legislators think, but as a vehicle unique to itself. England’s Channel 4 commented that “‘Heritage’ is a much-abused term in the motor industry, but the Defender is one of the few cars that can lay claim to it. It’s also strangely classless: though generally associated with the huntin’ and shootin’ set, the Defender’s also a true working-class tool, especially in pick-up form. Green wellies, tweed caps, corduroy trousers and black Labradors are optional, but it does look out of place in the city.” The 2007 Defender remains true to its marque values but continuous improvement make it even more delectable than before. Changes have been modest since the model took over for the Series III in 1983. For 2007, the stylist’s eye will note a taller bonnet line and the absence of the name “Defender” on the front. The newest one says proudly “Land Rover.” Under the new aluminum bonnet is a new 2.4 liter diesel, a Ford-based commercial unit adapted for the extreme off road use common to Defenders. It’s the only engine available on any Defender. It’s a common-rail, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that puts out similar horsepower (122 hp) to the Td5, but virtually all of the torque comes on between 1,500 – 2,700 rpm. Farmer’s Guardian did the calculations; they claim that 90% of the “grunt” is available through 60% of the rpm range. There’s 266 lbs/ft available at only 2000 rpm!

The new engine enjoys a new Getrag 6-speed manual transmission, so you can take advantage of this wider torque curve. The new transmission also permits a lower first gear and a higher 6th gear for highway driving. First gear is now 5.44:1, fifth gear is now 1:1, and 6th gear is a true overdrive at 0.74. The final drive ratio is an ideal 3.54. Engine electronics limit the engine to 85 mph, but you’ll get there faster and quieter than ever. When it comes time to stop, your pedal foot will operate 4 disc brakes, vented up front, for more secure on-road operation. A jaundiced eye might also be cast at the scuttle on the top of the bulkhead; the much-beloved vents are gone. This is made possible by Interior of ‘07 Defender

the vast improvements in the interior fitments. First off, the facia and dash comprise one piece of injection-molded plastic. The squeaks that always had you searching for mice, and the rattles that convinced you that loose tools rolled around your feet, are also gone. The heat really works now and there’s even an optional, truly functional air conditioner. You may not need it because the Defender finally has eyeball fresh-air vents, just like cars from the 1960’s. Instead of putting instruments in the center of the facia, Land Rover has placed large, easily identifiable switches and buttons where you would expect to find them. Optional packages include a center console, cupholders [!], an upgraded audio system, even MP3/iPod
When it comes to brand identity; Defender is what qualifies Range Rover, LR3, and LR2 as being worthy of the green oval. Photo: Richard Howell-Thomas (LRM).
compatibility. Given the improved interior insulation, you can truly hear the music. It’s still a narrow vehicle so your seats, which adjust a bit more than before, still rely on the door and electric window to help position you in cockpit. Autocar.UK noted that “the driving position remains appalling…elbow room is notable for its absence and leg room is right on the limit of comfortable.” In the Defender 90’s rear, EU regulations have forced the twin rear jump seats to face forward, not sideways. The seats will tip forward and fold sideways so as to leave plenty of room for work tools or play stuff. Again, EU regulations mean that you can’t have more than 7 seats; gone are the 10-seat and 12-seat possibilities of yesteryear. The 2007 Defender offers 14 different body styles in wheelbases of 90 [actually 92.5”], 110, and 130 inches. You can enjoy a hard top [with or without side windows], the venerable station wagon, a double cab [crew cab], and pickup model. Land Rover Special Vehicles will still create or authorize ambulances, lifeboat haulers, tippers [dump bodies], or most anything else you’d want. On or off-road, the Defender will haul up to 3,500 kg while
climbing steep or slippery hills. There’s no automatic transmission option nor does the Defender come with airbags, anywhere in the car. You can’t loll about in cruise control or watch a DVD player. Reflecting the popularity of Defenders amongst auto thieves, an alarm, an immobilizer and central locking is standard. The optional sunroof is manually operated. The exterior mirrors move only when you grab them with your hands and yank them in the right direction. The rear windows on the 90 still slide open and shut, just as they do on my ’66 Series II-A. For the UK market, you can still order rubber mats and take a hose to the interior. The clutch is reportedly as heavy as ever and the turning circle still rivals that of a Kenworth attached to a semi. Interior noise at 70 mph is 73 decibels, about that of a diesel locomotive, but you can hear the standard audio system. Autoinsider.com summarized the off road capabilities well. They wrote “The test course covered some of the toughest terrain – so steep, deep and undulating that you’d think twice about covering it on foot. Yet the Defender lapped it up, rocking from side to side over tree roots but plodding on unmoved. When it eventually came unstuck it was down to a lack of driver technique – it scaled the 19
muddy slope on the forth attempt, despite each previous go making it more and more slippery. If you reach the limit of the Defender’s abilities, you’re either mad or very lost indeed.” Autocar.uk observed that “off-road, the domain it has ruled for nearly 60 years, the Defender is now more mind-meltingly able than ever. This is a car that will tackle a 45-degree slope going forwards or backwards. It will wade through water half a metre deep without modification and traverse a 35-degree hill. Its approach and departure angles are both an astounding 47 degrees. A Jeep Wrangler, perhaps its closest conceptual rival, offers just 38 and 32 degrees respectively. These extraordinary stats combine with its huge ground clearance and compact wheelbase to give rock-hopping qualities most alleged off-roaders simply couldn’t imagine. Low range, unswitchable traction control (optional with ABS) and differential locks complete the picture.” The 2007 Defender is “a vehicle for farms, outbacks, jungles and deserts that, for all its flaws, has a very real role in the world today. It is better than ever at those things it needs to be good at, and as useless as it has always been at everything else.” Oh, yes, it still has a rear external power take-off.
Hello, Ford – this is America calling. Send us the Defender! _______ ________
It really does not matter if Ford sells a lot of Defenders in our market, because the draw they will create for retailers will only increase the awareness, intrest, and sales of other Land Rover models.

BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson What is undeniable is that if you drive your Land Rover every day, you will get thumbs-up from a huge range of people, on Carnaby St. or Main St.
_______ ________
Recently, the New York Times quoted Nicole Farhi, a French designer working in London. She owns a 1956 Mercedes 190 cabriolet and claims “no one else is allowed to drive it. Old cars only recognize one driver. You have to know how to coax it. I drive my Mercedes every day to my office off or Carnaby St., and always get a lot of thumbs-up.” Series Land Rover owners will recognize the validity of her statements. Even Range Rover Classic and Discovery owners can find themselves having to give more detailed instructions than “make certain you put gas in it” when they loan out their Rovers. I have let others drive my two Series II-As, but never with enthusiasm or confidence. An offer to “take my car” is accompanied by a long list of starting, accelerating and stopping instructions that usually lead the recipient to say, “Never mind, I’ll walk.” Even in rain, snow and sleet! If they do summon up the courage to drive it, they watch me cringe with a discomforting combination of anguish and fright. When you do loan out the Rover, it will never drive as you predict. When you insist the clutch action is smooth, it will lurch. If you state it shifts easily, it will grind in every gear. Rovers recognize only one driver; any alternate driver will feel as though they’re still working on their Learners Permit. You really do need to know “how to coax it.” 28
In the 1960’s, tweed flat cap sorts argued endlessly about “what is a sports car?” Most agreed that agility, handling, great road feel, simplicity and functionality, were critical qualities. Physics would dictate that light weight would be important. That in turn meant a small engine of simple yet durable construction – you needed to be able to tune it easily when you took it to the track or to a rally on the weekends. The car would be small so it could remain light and nimble. Light weight also mitigated against much weather protection, thus the “hankie in the wind” tops common to MG’s, Triumphs and Austin-Healys. Driver involvement was also a crucial factor. No need to isolate the driver from the road underneath the car; he would want to feel every bump or dip. A short-throw manual transmission, correctly placed pedals, informative instrumentation, and hip-hugging seats would increase your involvement. Passenger comfort or convenience played only the smallest role- the Porche 912 of the ‘70’s didn’t even offer an adjustment on the passenger’s seat. This debate arose after sports car manufacturers found their markets being devoured by cars that met consumer demands for comfort, speed, reliability, size and styling without the discomfort, noise and barebones feel of the classic sports car. Putting a 4-speed manual transmission or bucket seats in a Pontiac Tempest or a Ford Mustang did not make them sports cars, but it did jack up volume sales of those models. Most of the body panels, frames, engines and other components were shared with the family sedan counterparts of the same manufacturer. That kept costs low, making British cars- with a high pound/dollar exchange rate even more expensive in comparison. Welcome to the 21rst century when Land Rover finds that the highly adaptable, utilitarian, elemental Defender shares its platform
with no other Land Rover product. It requires more labor time, paid for in those expensive British pounds, than its other Land Rover cousins. Volume might be the answer except for the cost of manufacture and the inability for the current model to meet US legislative and regulatory standards. What’s providing volume sales for Land Rover are the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover, LR3 and LR2. These vehicles are profitable for Land Rover [and Ford] but they create their own dilemmas for Land Rover. Some might become Land Rover enthusiasts, but honestly, a vehicle requiring a computer system to diagnose running problems is not going to be the first choice for remote fieldwork. They’re purchased by owners whose needs are for family transport, daily commuting, vacation trips and high speed highway driving. They are fascinating vehicles in terms of engineering and off-road orientation. The care and feeding of this new Land Rover owner – who expect annual updates and enhancements – might just soak up Land Rover’s resources that otherwise might go to making the Defender available for the US market. How badly do Land Rover enthusiasts want a Defender back in the US? The price asked for 1993 Defender 110’s and the ’93’98 Defender 90’s tells us that both models’ popularity remain enormous. Visually, the Defender never strayed far from the purposeful look of the Series I – III Land Rovers. In terms of engineering, the Defender stretched the extraordinary capabilities of the Series models even further. Our relatively low fuel prices meant that we received the exceptional 3.5/3.9 liter Rover V-8, which gave the Defender the acceleration and highway speed necessary for living large in the USA. In the ‘90’s, we bought every Defender brought in – the problem for Land Rover was that the annual total rarely exceeded 1,500. That’s not really enough volume to assure updates to meet regulatory changes. Ah, those darned regulations – like airbags, side curtains, and more. For example in April, 2007, the federal government announced that all new passenger vehicles
sold in the US will be required to have antirollover technology by the 2012 model year. We haven’t even begun to review the emissions standards that keep Land Rover’s outstanding diesels out of the US market. When General Motors threatened to buy Land Rover in the 1960’s, British enthusiasts rebelled and led Land Rover convoys to protest the possible takeover. If Americans want the Defender back in the US, maybe we need a convoy to Irvine, CA, to let Land Rover know of our deepest desires. _______ ________
Frank Twarog, Hinesburg, VT has the desire. He’s a lot younger but we’re both graduates of the University of Vermont. When Frank became a student, I taught courses in the History Department. He owned a Series Land Rover and hung around Rovers North when he should have been in the library. Frank was one of the first people to share my joy when a Rovers North 2.25 rebuild was dropped into the QE I. During the ‘90s, he’s writing articles for the Rovers North News and soon after, landed a sales position with the company. A Defender 90 followed, as did a family and a new profession as a lawyer in Burlington, VT. Recently, Frank sent photocopies of a 1966 and 1973 Vermont business directory
featuring Burlington’s Land Rover dealer. In 1966, Lakeview Buick, Inc., sold Buick, Opel [Buick’s captive import] and Land Rover. Their multistory building was on Burlington’s hilly Main Street, and you drove up a ramp to get to the service department on the second floor. As a college student during that time, I remember ogling at the one Land Rover in the showroom window. As my Morris Minor had cost me $400, a new Land Rover seemed like an impossible stretch to me.
By 1973, Lakeview Buick had followed its competitors to the suburbs and opened a spacious new dealership about 3 miles away. Without the view of Lake Champlain, they had morphed into Lake Buick. By that time, UVM was employing me at a salary scale that continued to assure me that I would remain Rover-less. Still, I would drive my Simca out to Lake Buick to stare at the Land Rovers. Frank sent a note accompanying the photocopies. “Drove by Lake Buick today…they’re tearing it down.” It was a quaint time when Rover of North America, and later, British Leyland, threw their products into the mix with other marques. Long before the Sales Guides wore wrinkled khaki shirts and expedition boots, they wore slick polyester shirts and white boots. “Did you want a vinyl roof with that Electra 2.25, sir?”
_______ ________
In April I conversed with correspondent Randy Dickson of White River Junction, VT. When I asked him “what’s your job?” he responded with a short answer. “I’m an industrial arts teacher,” he said. Then he asked me the same question. Oh, boy, this is going to take a while. Like many people in Maine and throughout northern New England, I have multiple jobs, depending on the seasons. Painting houses, caretaking summer properties, wood cutting and clearing are best accomplished in drier, warmer weather. In northern New England, that means late spring, summer or early fall. Fortunately for me, I have other jobs - editing this magazine, assisting at our local school, building web sites, public humanities programs and bartending. Reading, talking, surfing the web and drinking occur year round. Summer people have commented to me that my two ’66 Series II-A’s are perfect vehicles for the island. Unknowingly they treat the Land Rovers as if they were delicate antiques, unable to withstand the rigors of daily use. Wrong! The Station Wagon and the Hardtop are perfect vehicles for island use, but
because of different qualities. This cool spring has meant that fetching wood for the stove has been a steady need. Fold up the rear seats in the station wagon, remove the ammo box [my version of the fabled “Continental Touring Kit”] and the crate full of “Car in A Can” fluids, and you have a lot of room in which to stuff firewood. In April, a new summer family came into the bar for food and drink. They’re Connecticut residents building a summer home on newly-cleared waterfront. My ears perked up – what are you doing with the logged trees? In fact, they had some local brothers clear the land and cut the trees into log length already. If they didn’t want the wood, I was free to drive down and take it. A phone call the next day cleared the way for me to add to my depleted woodpile. When I arrived at the lane to their lot, I got out of the Rover to walk the land. It sloped down steadily towards the rocky shore. The ground was quite soft with runoff, but I noticed some ledge and rocks in the ground that should provide solid footing. I got back in the Rover and drove down in first gear low range to the wood stacked near the shore. I loaded up the Rover with wood stacked nearly to the roof. Then I headed back up the hill. English magazines will tell often about the challenges of off roading in slippery grassy fields. They’re right. My route required that I turn left and then head up a steep rise with no room to gain momentum. The Rover’s wheel started to spin in first low range. Shifting into second lessened the wheelspin but I couldn’t get enough speed to make it up the hill. I considered shifting into high range 4-wheel drive but I knew that first gear would be too low for the entire run up the hill; shifting a non-synchro II-A on the fly just looses momentum. After a few tries I could see ruts forming in the field, so I got out of the car to plan a different route. I had no desire to empty the Rover of wood – it had taken too much energy to stuff it in. Taking a longer way round would give me more room for momentum, but take me across potentially softer ground. Just in case, I knew I had my Hi-Lift for assistance, so I gave the new route a try. Fortunately, it worked! _______ ________

DISCOVERY II REAR AIR TO GENUINE COIL SPRING CONVERSION KIT
TECH LINE [Rovers North staff receive phone calls daily asking for technical advice, parts and accessory recommendations, off roading questions, maintenance tips and repair diagnoses. Between calls, we asked the Rovers North staff to share some recent technical questions with us –ed.] Steve Haskell (’93 Range Rover Classic) Maintenance of the braking systems on Range Rovers, Defenders and Discoverys often involves installing new disc pads and turning rotors. All too often, you put it all back together only to find that you’re listening to squealing every time you apply the brakes. How can you avoid this problem? As a Porche and Audi mechanic, I found myself frustrated by customers who disliked the noise emanating from their newly installed brakes. So I contacted Raybestos experts for advice. First, recognize that when brake rotors are turned [to level off their surfaces], they often become magnetic. Most enthusiasts and/or mechanics will rinse the rotors off quickly with distilled water or brake cleaner. The problem is that the surface never gets clean this way because the magnetism keeps metal shavings from the machining firmly attached to the surface. Step 1 - their recommendation to me was to use dishwashing liquid to create soapy water. Wash the rotors in the water and you’ll feel the rotor filings in the mix. Clean them this way first, and then spray a light coat of conventional brake cleaner. Step 2 – Use synthetic caliper grease sold at parts stores [e.g, Permatex or similar brands] rather than the normal grease, on the back of the brake pads. Brakes surfaces reach 400 – 500 degrees F; if you’re using antiseize compounds or conventional grease on the back of the pads, they will likely melt and drip off. Mike Koch (ex- MOD Series III 109”) Electrical problems can bedevil enthusiasts, particularly when the Previous Owner left no schematics in the car when it was sold. Recently, a customer called about his newly-purchased 2000 Range Rover. It had Hella lights installed on the brush bar. The Hellas were wired to go on only when the high beams were engaged; however, the lights would only stay on when the owner actually held his finger on the switch. If he released the switch, the Hellas shut off. Step 1 - The starting point must be to trace the wiring from the brush bar though the grill. Step 2 - Look to see if a relay was installed; ideally, that will be the case. Step 3 - Test the relay to see if it works correctly. Step 4 - Test the switch for the Hella lights to determine if it is working properly My key point is that if you don’t take the time to trace the wiring, or have it done for you, you will not be able to diagnose the problem effectively. Replacing a part right off the bat is generally ineffective in electrical problems. 38
A customer called with concerns that their gearbox had become stiff and difficult to engage smoothly. What steps should they take? Step 1- It sounds so basic, but often this problem results from low hypoid oil levels in the gearbox. Check the level by removing the fill plug on the left side of the transmission case. More often than not, it’s quite low. If you can find any to examine, you want to see a glossy brown color. If you run the oil between your fingers, you should not feel grit or metal filings. If your fluid is quite dark consider draining it out and replacing it with new gear oil. If it’s milky, then it’s contaminated with moisture. Step 2 – Check the transfer case, too. That fill plug is on the back side of the transfer case, behind the transmission. If it is low, then fill it to level. Hint -if it gushes out at you and you have found the transmission down in level, then you have a bad seal between the transmission and the transfer case. Know that you will have to fill the transmission and release some from the transfer case until you remove both from the car and replace the seal. Step 4 – Make certain that your clutch fluid level is up to the fill line in the clutch reservoir. Look at the fluid color –if it’s gray or dark, you might have disintegration of the rubber seals inside the clutch master cylinder. Your fluid level will be normal but the clutch action will feel ineffective rather than spongy. Fluid is likely leaking past ineffective seals. Step 5 - If the fluid color is light brown and you have a firm pedal, then crawl underneath the right side of the car beneath the slave cylinder. If you have a Series I, II or II-A, you want to make certain that the adjustment nuts at the slave cylinder rod are at the correct length. The distance between the top of the slave cylinder to the adjustment nut [the top one of the two on the pushrod] will be 2 7/8 inches. Use a set of calipers or even an elementary school compass to effect the measurement. Step 5 – If the fluid level in your reservoir is down, and you don’t have a firm pedal, then you might have a leak at the slave cylinder. Check for fluid leaks around the slave cylinder, or at the point where the rubber clutch line screws into the slave cylinder. Slave cylinders can be rebuilt, but you’ll need to make certain that the inner surfaces are very smooth and clean. If you have much pitting inside the cylinder, a rebuild kit probably won’t work. A customer replaced a Zenith carburetor with a Weber 34 ICH on a ’72 Series II-A. Why will it run only when the choke cable is pulled out? Step 1 - Make certain that you have adjusted the mixture screw to the factory setting. Turn the mixture screw [the long screw at the bulkhead side of the carburetor] in all the way, and then back it off 2 ½ turns. Step 2 – Make certain that the carb is tightly installed on the intake manifold. Make certain that the top carb cover screws [there are 4] are tight, also.
Step 3 – Check the intake manifold for leaks between the manifold and the block. There are several bolts and nuts that hold the manifold to the block. Engine vibration can loosen them. Remember that there are 3 nuts underneath the manifold that cannot be seen. Find them with your fingers and use a ½ inch socket to tighten them. If the car will run, spray WD 40 or PB Blaster along the gasket between the manifold and block. If the rpm changes slightly, you have an intake leak that will require you to replace the gasket. Step 4 – Check your ignition timing. First, make certain the points are gapped correctly at .14 - .16 thousandths. Secondly, use a timing light to set the timing. If the timing is too retarded, the engine will feel sluggish and you’ll be tempted to enrichen the mixture. If the timing is too advanced, the engine will often run too hot and will run on or “diesel” when it’s shut off. Les Parker (Series III Lightweight, ’97 Discovery 4.0 5-speed manual, ’92 Range Rover Hunter Edition, ’88 Range Rover Classic [for off roading], Defender 90 awaiting a 300 Tdi) After major work on engines, it’s often necessary to set the engine timing up anew. To accomplish this on a car with a distributor, it’s best to use a technique called static timing. Here’s how you accomplish this. Step 1 – Remove the ignition wire from the coil to prevent an accidental start. Put the gearbox in neutral and engage the handbrake. Step 2 – Remove the valve cover so you can see the pushrods. When the pushrod for cylinder #1 [the one closest to the radiator] is relaxed, you’re at top dead center. Then, make certain that the rotor arm on the distributor is pointing towards the #1 cylinder. Step 3- You should now be able to replace the ignition wire to the coil and start the motor. It should be easier to time it now. Many enthusiasts love their 24v military vehicles until they require ignition parts. Then they discover that 24v parts can be difficult to find and/or more expensive that they wish to spend. One solution is to convert the ignition portion of the electrical system from 24 to 12 volts. Here’s a checklist: Step 1 – Order a Rovers North Proline PLE143 distributor, which comes complete with cap, rotor, points, and condenser. Also, you’ll want to order a distributor base plate and gasket to replace the different-sized one used on 24 volt systems. Step 2 – Determine whether you have a 7:1 compression ratio head or an 8:1 head. Most of the ex-military vehicles were 7:1 heads; if the head has been rebuilt, it has probably been machined into an 8:1 ratio. 7:1 heads use an RNE 619 sparkplug; 8:1 heads use an RNE 630 sparkplug. Step 3 – Order a Genuine Land Rover spark plug wire set [RNC 524]. When you replace the wires, remember that Land Rover distributors rotate counterclockwise. The firing order of 1-3-4-2 goes around towards the left, not the right. Step 4 – Replace the coil with an RNE 522. The ignition wire to the coil will come from a box attached to the valve cover; you’re looking for a white wire. With these changes, your ignition system becomes 12 volts but the remainder of your electrical system (lights, wiper motors, etc.) will still be 24 volts.

The Next Series Rover? Story by: Randy Dickson [Randy Dickson, White River Junction, VT, once taught auto mechanics to vocational high school students. Once electronic ignitions took over, he chose to become an Industrial Arts teacher of woodworking in middle schools. Along with his Sheltie, Molly, he’s an avid local history buff who raises a significant issue with us –ed.] My family purchased a 1969 Series II-A 88” SW, the short-term “bug eye” model. My father selected it to replace a Willys Station Wagon with the flathead 6-cylinder. The Willys performed well but had lost a battle to the rapid rust of Cape Cod sand and salt. It probably didn’t help that we drove through salt water to our home when there was a full moon tide! Dad liked the idea of the Rover’s aluminum alloy body, and the 4-speed gearbox [Willys and early AMC Jeeps had only 3speed gearboxes -ed]. It was Land Rover green, had the rear seats for four (child-size), and a bonnet-mounted spare. I learned to drive in that truck well before I turned 16. Dad gave me permission to take the keys from the dish on the desk, and off I would go on the back roads of South Orleans. It was amazing to drive a new 88”! Everything felt in-sych, even the gearbox! Our Land Rover performed many family duties: it served as a commuter vehicle, moved the boats, made dump runs, completed yard chores, and of course, took us on family outings down Nauset Beach and back. The Land Rover was a common sight in the Orleans area of Cape Cod, MA, as we had a local dealer, Orleans Motors, on the town cove. Certainly our Rover benefited from their care. When Land Rover left the North American market in 1974, Orleans Motors became an International Scout dealer. Sadly, the last I saw of the Orleans Motors building, it was a retail clothing shop. Running a Series Land Rover today as a daily driver is a chal48
lenge. Many of us who lived with a Series Land Rover upgraded it to some modern standards. After all, we need our cup holders, fog lights and roof racks. When we approach the safety side of things, we enter into more challenging territory. We desire contemporary seat belts, power assist and/or disc brake conversions, better lighting, and engine performance that matches today’s highway driving. These upgrades can become costly. I’ve been recently considering purchasing a Series pickup but then I know I’ll want to change it (a lot!) once it’s in the driveway. What can be as versatile, as effective and as fun as a Series but already incorporate modern engineering? Perhaps the answer lies with the next Rover to hold the Series nomenclature, the Discovery. Since I have a good Discovery I, named “Tigger,” perhaps it should become my next Series Rover. Tigger arrived in 1994, the first year in North America for the Discovery. The ‘94 was a one-model year for the US market. There were limited options – color schemes, rear jump seats or not, automatic or 5-speed standard [the only US model with a manual transmission]. It came equipped with many of the features and mechanicals we sometimes want to add to our Series vehicles (don’t lie now - admit it!) There’s no shortage of the first model Discoverys, now called Discovery Series I’s. They were both produced in high numbers for their day (65,444 Discovery I’s were sold in the US from 1994 to 1999). There are many to choose from on the used car market; parts and upgrades are plentiful. Here are 10 good reasons to consider a Discovery in lieu of your next classic Series vehicle. First, they cruise at 65 MPH with a lot less drivetrain noise. Secondly, I’m a fan of cruise control for interstate driving. It’s also hard not to love the Rover V-8’s overall power and smoothness.
I have to admit that I’ve become a fan of the Land Rover automatic for both on-road and off-road driving. The electronic ignition system has never let me down. The power assisted disc brakes come with an antilock feature for safety in ice and snow. The coil spring suspension with the anti-sway bars assures additional safety in all weather conditions. My Discovery has great road manners, helped by the wider 58.8” track. It’s been great right out of the box in off-road situations, too, and there are plenty of off-road options if I want to upgrade the vehicle. Finally, the Discovery has all of the creature comforts that have become necessities for a modern daily driver - multi-speed wipers and windshield washers, truly effective heater and defroster systems, rear window wipers, door locks that lock, doors that shut tight, quiet and calm interiors, inertia reel seat belts and air bags. No - I’m not busting on our beloved Series I, II, IIA, or Series III. They all do their truck chores with ease, are mechanically simple (except those damn drum brakes - simple yes, just not easy for me!), and are supported by every upgrade you can think of. Well - not the aerodynamics package of course! But as we upgrade our Series to a Disco I (or to Range Rover) specs., why not get a Disco? Why not? They are plentiful, relatively cheep, lack the modern computer problems (well - most of the problems...), and are driver friendly on long trips and around town. This was my thought process when confronted with this difficult choice. Mind you, I loved my beautiful 1967 Series-IIA 109” 5-door SW. With a new galvanized frame, it had a sweet-running 4-cylinder with overdrive and a capstan winch to boot. But the 109” was not fully up to the task I had in mind for it. Sure, it would hold many paying customers, their canoes and gear piled onto a trailer, but not really at highway speeds and certainly not up to contemporary safety expectations. So, the more I thought of all the changes required to upgrade this beautiful old ‘67 Series II-A, the more I realized it was loosing its
unique character. The reality that there would not be much left of the original truck by the time it met my expectations. So the seven seat Disco appeared to be the solution with its ability to carry seven, travel at 65 mph, go off-road, and leave the 109” original. The Discovery, like the 109”, had to perform dual roles of onroad transport and off-road trail tours - which it did with ease, in stock form. The only place the Disco fell short was inevitable. It just did not look the part of pure “Safari” as the 109” did. But then again, what vehicle does look African Safari more than a 109” station wagon? The Discovery, when purchased, was locked out of low range as many of them are - as it was a “grocery getter” in its previous life, low range had never been engaged. One sun roof would not move from the “shut’ position, but it’s fixed now. Otherwise, it’s been a great investment. I’ve left it fairly stock except for a home made bumper bar to hold the “High-Lift” jack, pull line, etc., a ladder and 2/3 roof rack, and a tad bit of black paint - Camel Trophy style! It 3may be in for some tweaks by the end of this summer, as its last trip had the front spoiler being used as a “dirt scoop” on the trails. In these days of nearly $4.00 premium fuel, gas mileage can become depressing. My Discovery’s EPA rating is 16 mpg highway, 13 city. That’s about the same as my Series II-A 109” used to get, too. The average 2007 small four cylinder pickup with DOHC engine and numerous other efficiency enhancing features is only rated at 18/21 mpg city/highway. So our older 3.9 liter push-rod engine does not look that bad after all – and the pickup will not seat as many people. As the consummate people-hauler, as an excellent tow vehicle, as a superbly competent off roader, and a brilliant daily driver for contemporary use, consider the Discovery as the logical successor to the classic Series Rover. If you have the choice, you might keep your classic Series Rover closer to original (with a few tweaks of course!) and accept its limitations on the back roads, and have a Discovery for everything else. _______ ________

My Rover and Me Story & Photos by Amy Langevin
[Amy Langevin, Cumberland, ME, lives with her husband John and children Collin, Conor, Christian and Aynsley. Asked often by her children, “Why can’t you be more normal like other Moms,” she refuses to conform to what society expects from a 40-something Director of Health and Wellness at the University of New England. Here’s her story –ed.] It wasn’t until recently that I became hooked on Land Rovers. As a young child, I spent my summers in the shade of a ’47 Willy’s Jeep during our visits to Little Pleasant Bay, in East Orleans, on Cape Cod (I consider those my formative 4x4 years). As I walked along Nauset Beach, I always loved looking at all the “beach buggies,” especially the Volkswagen-based buggies that seemed to have no problem with the sand without four wheel drive! In later years, I would see various Rovers navigating the deep sands of the outer beach, but never really gave them a second glance. My love affair with Rovers began with the acquisition of a ’97 Discovery XD Camel Trophy edition (screaming yellow!). When I met John, I was driving a trusty but dowdy domestic minivan sporting 210,000 miles. I was in deep denial of the actual state of that vehi50
cle, but with great prodding and convincing from my husband, I reluctantly donated it to charity and assumed the wheel of the aforementioned Rover. I immediately dubbed it my “boyfriend car”. With its bright exterior and extensive off-road packaging, I likened my driving it to a high school girl wearing the football star’s letter jacket…it’s a bit big and obviously made for someone else. I have never officially been off-road in this Rover. Not unless you count the night we came home from a party and I decided to take a few tours around the yard, just to see what it was like. I do hope to someday test the Rover’s mettle off-road. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the other Rover my husband owned at the time. It was a cherry red soft-top D-90, also a ’97. It was his pride and joy. As with all vehicles we fall in love with, he too was in denial about its functionality. Listed on the title as “Totaled,” the previous owner had taken it for a swim without the benefit of a snorkel. My husband bought the Defender (and the XD) from Land Rover Scarborough. The story of the D-90 is longer and more involved, but essentially the original owner (name unknown) totaled it, then another gentleman from Cumberland bought it from an insurance company and restored it (mostly).
In 2000, John happened to be at Land Rover Scarborough at the same time as the Defender’s owner. My husband promptly offered to buy it. He owned the D-90 for about three years, and sadly had a lot of trouble with it (replaced the transmission, brakes, had numerous electrical problems, etc.). Despite all the problems, he LOVED that vehicle. He wouldn’t even let me drive it! It just took more time and energy (and free-flowing cash) than he had at the time. When he went to get it inspected at the dealer for the last time, the estimate rose to $5,000. While John struggled emotionally and financially with the Defender, I soon discovered the benefits of driving a Discovery: great visibility, outstanding sound system, ability to go anywhere and over any terrain, and that bright yellow color - school buses are painted the same color because it’s the safest color on the road - plus the fact that it’s impossible to lose in a parking lot. I’m also impressed with the V-8 engine. I quickly learned that boxy 4x4s are fully capable of passing other cars with alarmingly high bursts of speed. The first time I went to pass someone on a two-lane country road, I forgot that I was not in my underpowered six-cylinder minivan, and simply put the pedal to the metal. I soon remembered where I was when the Rover ROARED to life and literally shot out from under me! It felt like I was left sitting in the back seat, holding the steering wheel while trying to control this latent beast I just unleashed. Quite an eye-opener! It wasn’t long before my teenage sons caught Rover fever. Whether they appreciated the superior craftsmanship and the whole Rover legend I’m not sure, but I do know for certain they liked the attention this over-the-top vehicle brought them. It’s a head-turner with the high school crowd, and they soon requested to be picked up
at school in it. When it came time for Driver’s Ed, I decided that my 15 year old Conor should have a taste of the Rover experience, and took him for a test-drive in the local graveyard (who could he hurt?). As Rover drivers know, handling one is a completely different experience. And as I now know, letting your inexperienced teenage son drive one in a graveyard is not the best idea. We didn’t realize how close they put those gravestones to the road, especially on the turns! (Note: no gravestones were harmed, but I imagine the groundskeeper was busy the next day filling in the ruts). The appeal of the XD Camel Trophy Edition spread to other areas of my life. I teach at a University, where I here such comments as, “Oh, I’ve always wondered who drove that pimped-out Rover!” from my students. Occasionally, I’ll hear other comments about how much someone likes the vehicle, but in general the XD seems to draw the high-testosterone crowd. Speaking of my husband, he remains a Rover fanatic through and through. Even though the D-90 is long gone, we still take photos of other Rovers when on vacation. For instance, a high percentage of our Caribbean photos are of island Land Rovers, and they’re as much of a draw to him as the turquoise waters and balmy breezes. But despite all the bells, whistles and muscular exterior, this Land Rover the best car I’ve ever owned. The yellow XD paint shade color still clashes with my salon-blonde hair, and I’m not sure I would have picked this car out for myself initially; but I still wouldn’t give it up for anything - although those Caribbean-based Defender 110s do appeal to my feminine side. In the end, though, perhaps one day the XD will be passed down through the children, along with grandmother’s fine china. _______ ________

DOWN on the FARM Story & Photos by Jason Gottlilieb
[Jason Gottlieb, Boston, MA, has “an affinity for clunky-looking metal contraptions.” This would explain the 30-year old’s fascination with his Series Land Rovers. He uses them on his family’s farm when he tires of his financial service webcasting position and urban cycling. Here’s how he keeps them down on the farm –ed.] Christmas morning – a time that, for me, is always much more about bringing together the people I care about and eating good food
Back Bay in Boston, right downtown, so it’s great to be able to get away like this. It was the perfect day for it, and a nice way for me to spend my Christmas morning; I’d lost my grandfather this past year and, as we all know, Christmas brings these sorts of things to the forefront of our thoughts. Driving around the farm in a ’67 Land Rover was just what I needed to clear my head and put a smile back on my face. Returning to the house, I spotted something different, under a blue tarp, something roughly the size of a small car. My mind was a
combined with lots of laughter. The days of looking forward to gifts have long passed for me. I feel I really have everything I could ever need and have moved in a direction of becoming much less “material” in the last several years. This Christmas, however, was different. I arrived at the “family farm” in Gilmanton, New Hampshire to spend a Christmas day roaming around in the ’67 Series II-A on the property. The 330-acre farm is a wonderful place to visit, as you can really get away from everything and there are plenty of difficult trails to explore. I live in
bit preoccupied, so I didn’t spend too much time thinking about it. Walking back into the house, I received a set of very old-looking keys. I was guided out to the field where the mysterious car under the tarp was waiting. Pulling back the tarp, a beautiful (in my eyes) 1965 Rover II-A 88” HT appeared. I was told it was a parts truck for me, that every single panel was pristine and would mate up exceptionally well with my ’67. The frame was completely rotten; in fact so much so that when the Rover was transported back to the farm, the “pull-downs” on the flatbed started actually pulling the frame in two.
52
I studied the gray Rover, noting the original paint inside and the condition of the truck. Yes, this truck had sat for a very long time. Its inspection sticker read 1981, and I’m pretty sure that’s the last time it was run. The tires looked possibly original, the pedals had virtually no wear on the rubber, and the body was dent-free. Could it be that the 41K miles on the odometer were original? I spent the next several weeks trying to decide if I really wanted to salvage this truck. After all, what a project it would be! And did I need another Rover? Living in the heart of Boston, not even needing a car at all, does it make any sense that I already own a new FJ Cruiser replicar and a 1967 Rover II-A? Now I’m thinking about restoring another Rover? I blame it on car addiction. That’s really the only way I can justify all of this. With the help and prodding of various Rovers North forum board members, I soon realized that this truck was too good to part out. It was basically a “barn-find” that unfortunately did not have a barn to
For now, the gray Rover (original mid-grey, I’m told) sits quietly in a cold field in New Hampshire. This spring will begin a thorough cleaning. I have already hooked up a battery and determined all electronics, with the exception of wiper, function well. The starter kicks, but the engine seems stuck. That was last week. This weekend, after a week of sitting with Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders, I’ll give a good tug on the engine and see if I can turn it over. Enthusiasts like to think that Rovers are an “obsession,” but we know they’re an “addiction.” How else to explain my 14 hour drive to Michigan to pick up a tropical top for my current ’65 II-A? Family responsibilities and my own preference for on-road safety keep me in a new, air bag equipped FJ (old truck appeal with contemporary engineering), but nothing can take away to feeling of driving a 50-year old mechanical beast that you can work on yourself. Series Rovers are slow and they are unsafe in these modern times of
protect it from rust. Even the original ashtray was there. The body had no dents. The tailgate was complete with all the bits. Even elephant hide - colored sheaths still encased the tailgate chains! All the elephant hide seats cushions and squabs sat proudly and a complete Kodiak heater stood ready to burn my passenger’s feet. The truck seemed to be begging to be brought back to life. No, I couldn’t part this truck out! It will become my summer project! She will ride again!
go-go-go. They beat you up after even a fairly short drive. Yet, at the age of 30, I can’t get enough of them. I have a feeling this is only the beginning of a larger Rover collection (obsession/addiction). I’ll be writing more about the revival of my latest Land Rover. For now, though, send good Rover karma my way – I’m probably going to need it this summer! _______ ________

SIGHTINGS It’s spring in northern New England, which means that mud, crocuses, and the New York Yankees trying to buy yet another World Series can’t be far behind. When you want the get the attention of a winter-weary public, media giants and savvy marketers know you need a Land Rover somewhere in the scene. Once again there are superb entries that warrant emptying more of the crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always, it’s helpful for rookies to review the rules for Sightings - it can be just as useful for the grizzled Sighting veterans as well. Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in an distinctive way. Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won’t surprise us, either, and thus we can=t award you a mug. We’re delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn’t be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication, we close off the Sightings. If we’ve mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won’t mention it again. If you’re new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Rule #4 - We’re not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits. Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read you name and address because of atrocious penmanship, we can’t recognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst...E-mail submissions - remember we can’t send a mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might make an error. Let me know if you think you’ve been jobbed, but all decisions of the Editor are final. Catalogue marketers know that if you want to entice readers to pay attention, insert a Land Rover onto your cover and sprinkle extra photos throughout the publication. That’s what Sahalie did and a bevy of Sighters received this catalogue. Congratulations to Jeff Fisher, Wilmington, NC, Steve Ayers, Evansville, IL, Kelly Dunkelberger, Berthoud. CO, Ben Geissinger, Watertown, MN, Glenn Shriver, Chicago, IL, Charles Dooley, Dalton, PA, Ethan Drain, Killingsworth, CT, Keith Richardson, Woods Hole, MA, Jared 62
McNabb, Boston, MA, Jim Young and Wendy McFarlane, Cornwall Bridge, CT, and Karen Peterson, Alloway, NJ. Julianne Milsom, Duvall, WA, noted the presence of Series Rover in the Boston Proper catalogue. The lithe women were wearing dresses and shoes that would hamper entry into II-A used in the photo shoot. Laura Espejo, Omaha, NE, found Land Rovers on the Life Is Good catalogue website. Greg Akin, Abilene, TX, noted that Land Rover San Antonio supplied a new Range Rover for the H.S. Trask leather goods catalogue. We’ve mentioned that EMS uses Land Rovers in its catalogues; Alan Doloboff, Roslyn, NY and Eric Sousa [see Rule #6] found that those pages are reproduced on the EMS website, too. Jim Young and Wendy McFarlane, Cornwall Bridge, CT, noted that the British luxury goods manufacturer put a Series Rover on safari in their ad for Dunhill Pursuit cologne. Ameriprize sells financial products for people who understand what that means. Chuck Carrig, El Paso, TX, Peter Hope, Colorado Springs, CO, Brett Snyder, Satellite Beach, FL, Fred Behrens, Powaton, VA, Jim Gabor and Matt Weldon [see Rule #6] all spotted the TV ad. David Kessler, Worthington, OH, claims to have seen a Defender in an American Family Insurance ad. Kohl’s stores have moved east over the past few years. Their most recent newspaper flyers featured a Defender 90; implausibly, the male model wears white pants! Still, good job to Frank Twarog, Hinesburg, VT, Robert Wollschalger, Mystic, CT, Gail Ferguson, Pottstown, PA, and Patricia Jansen [see Rule #6]. Atmosphere Sports in Montreal prominently featured a Series III County-striped Hardtop in their flyer, reports Victor Gould, Montreal, Quebec. Milton Milner, Hendersonville, NC, spotted a Napapijri ad with a Range Rover Classic in the March Men’s Journal. Sika is a windshield adhesive caulk; when it
ran a recent ad on extreme conditions, it chose a front shot of a new Range Rover, notes Kim Conn, Snohomish, WA. Women’s Health magazine attracted male readers by using a lovely set of female legs, stretched out from underneath a Series II-A in Africa. It’s not a surprise but it was a delight to see. Matt Parro, Whitby, Ontario, Canada, and James Pitts, Dallas, GA, also spotted the page, entitled “The Average Woman – Road Warrior.” GQ Magazine ran an article on the “Go Anywhere Jacket” and put a Series Rover into the photo shoot. Dendy Jarrett, Nashville, TN, spotted the article and has promised this mug to his wife. Self Magazine ran an article on khaki clothing and decided that it needed a Series III to go along with the halter-topped female and the stubbled male model. What’s with shag rug steering wheel cover? Joe Kordaiski, Westwood, KS, read the article while “desperate for reading material in the bathroom.” The Atlantic Monthly spruced up its appearance with a photo of a Series 109” 5-door crossing the Sahara. Bernard McMahon, Washington, DC, spotted the Rovers in this issue. He also noted the Argentine shooting preserve advertisement
mentioned in an earlier issue. A tragic photo of an LR3, on its side in a creek, appeared in a Kansas City Star news story. David Allen, Kansas City, MO, recognized the silhouette of the new model in an accompanying photo. I tore myself away from the bare-breasted photos in Playboy to pay attention to the opposite side of the page, sent in by Jeff Foland, Clarksville, OH. That photo was of the Discovery II used by expeditioner Nick Baggerly in Australia. We note that Taco Bell is still running the ad with the talking lions and Series Rover, mentioned in an earlier issue but enjoyed by Vincent Coratello [see Rule #6]. Tanqueray Gin now uses a Series 109” SW in its latest TV campaign. Karl Orscheln, Springfield, MO and Kelly Horn, St. Joseph, MO, spotted the ad. Television shows love to spice up their offerings with Land Rovers. Greg Hollingworth, Colchester, CT, found a Defender 110 running contestants in an Amazing Race episode. Chris Whybres, Phoenix, AZ, and Matt Chelf, Wooster, OH, found a Range Rover Classic on an episode of The Unit. Christopher Davis, Albuquerque, NM, found a Range Rover Classic in an episode of 24; Joshua McGuoirk, Philadelphia, PA, saw a Discovery I on the same show spinning its tires, “something I’ve been
unable to replicate.” We’ve mentioned these shows before, they still but delighted our Spotters. New to this issue is the Doggie Day Care episode with a quick spot of a Range Rover, seen by Jennifer Drugge, Beaufort SC. The use of a Land Rover on a geologic expedition to a volcano, and watching a CGI of volcanic ash bury it, delighted Michael Bondmass, Las Vegas, NV. Brent Lane, San Diego, CA, watched a Series 109 hardtop during a program on the Foreign Legion. Patti O’Donnell, Danbury, NH saw a Discovery in Prison Break back in March. Brian and Ann Riley, Minneapolis MN vacationed this winter in Curacao. They found postcards showing a Military Lightweight on mountain trails and ads for the “Yellow Jeep Safari,” featuring yellow Defenders, not Jeeps, at work on the beaches. Hampton Huckins, Chelmsford, MA, vacationed in Brussels and watched a program on Bali. There, the narrator proclaimed, “the Land Rover is the perfect form of transportation. The Defender 110 shown looked perfect to Hampton. William Chau, Sylmar, CA, noted that an ad for the Hi Lift Extreme, which appeared in Off Road Adventures magazine, featured a Defender 90. Edwin Remsburg, Fallston, MD, noted that the online and movie trailers for Black Sheep feature a Series III as part of the action. New Zealand has a lot of Land Rovers still running about. Dave Paglianite, Avoca, PA, just saw the Starsky and Hutch remake and loved the Series II-A 109” in the film. Laura Lopez, Killean, TX, notes that the latest Nancy Drew trailer has an LR3 in an action sequence. It’s certainly the oddest Sighting of this issue. Jeff Berg, Malden MA, spotted a Defender 90 model nestled in a diorama of the Coast Guard Museum in Barnstable, MA. As Jeff asked, “What role did a 90 in County trim play in the maritime safety this historic New England town?” _______ ________
