LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Family owned by enthusiasts since 1979

Dear Mark and Rovers North, I want to personally thank you for participating in this year’s Land Rover National Rally. Without your help, and your support as a major sponsor, this event would not have been possible. I have to tell you that is was great working with you, and everyone that helped from Rovers. You and your company are truly class acts. You brought something very special to our The Finest event, and I truly look forward to seeing Rovers North and many rallies in years to come. This year’s event broke all of our club records in number of vehicles and total attendance. People came from all over the US as well as Puerto Rico, Canada, and Australia. We were very proud of the money we raised for the Grand County (Moab) Search and Rescue. The new participants at the Rally consisted of people who drive their vehicles daily as well as those who have kitted out their vehicles for mainly off-road use. We also welcomed a number of new Range Rovers, LR3s and even one Freelander to this year’s event; of course, we enjoyed the Discoverys, Range Rover P38s and Classics, Defenders and Series vehicles. Again, thank you for your sponsorship of the National Rally. We look forward to seeing you again this year. Mike Pompino Solihull Society Denver, CO [As you could tell from our coverage of the National Rally, the Rovers North group that attended enjoy spectacular off-roading as well as a festive time with other enthusiasts. Thanks for all your hard work –ed.]

Experience

Dear Rovers North, In light of the economy, I recently sold my heavy duty diesel work truck and am now using my 1998 Discovery daily, instead of just for off-roading. It’s been sitting dormant for a while and was mostly used for quick trips on the weekends and as an “extra vehicle.” It definitely has more than a few dents and dings and a true “personality,” but it is running great (for the most part). It’s in the shop now for an oil leak and I’ve had to replace the seat belt mechanism and rear taillights to make it safe for driving on public roads – but hey, it’s paid for! Duane Fitzgerald, DVM Lowell, MI [Now you’re just like all those veterinarians in the UK who use their Discoverys daily as their work vehicles. And isn’t it nice that it’s paid for! –ed.] Dear Rovers North, I always enjoy Jeff Aronson’s articles and musings on Series Land Rovers. His QE I definitely deserves to be in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, a great model of the marque. William Kendall Centreville, VA [I would be delighted to take the QE I to a photo shoot for the SI Swimsuit Issue, but if I couldn’t even get the models to ask me into the L.L. Bean photos, my chances are nil with Sports Illustrated – ed.]

Dear Rovers North, My newly purchased Defender is a low mileage vehicle in really quite good condition. I’m sure I will be ordering parts from you in the near future. Cullen Smith Niwot, CO [When you own a Defender, you will always wear a silly grin and put a lot more mileage on the car than you think – they’re addictive to drive. Congratulations on your purchase and share your good times with us – ed.] Dear Rovers North, I am on my way to Italy for a couple of years and hope to bring home my own Defender 110 to keep my Range Rover P-38 company. I am looking for a 1986 with a 200 Tdi engine. I am sure that you will be able to help me keep it running along with the P-38; I had to let my 1989 Range Rover Classic go. I’ll be back to Virginia after this tour and hopefully will visit Rovers North and check out one of the great east coast meets. Paul Muething Fishers, IM [What? You went to Italy and did not invite the Editor to join you? You’ll see lots of Land Rovers used by Italian government agencies. Let us see your 110 when you ship it home –ed.] P

Hi-Lift Repair Kit

Don’t settle for an imitation... the difference is quality With over 100 years of quality, the Hi-Lift Jack is a rugged, highly versatile jack that puts you in command of situations requiring lifting, pushing, pulling, winching and clamping. Light in weight and easy to maneuver, the Hi-Lift Jack offers a rated capacity of 4,600 lbs and a tested capacity of 7,000 lbs. First Impressions California Dreamin’

Story & Photo Neill Thornton

[Neill Thornton, San Diego, CA, grew up in Northern California and now works as an IT professional for the U.S. Navy on board the USNS Mercy. He serves, too, as a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy Reserve with the Marine Corps’ 4th Tank Battalion. Here’s his newest Land Rover experience –ed] Four years ago, I felt motivated to buy a new car to take advantage of the “Accelerated Depreciation” I could claim on my annual taxes. After talking to my accountant, I armed myself with a list of Sport Utilities that met the IRS requirements for an eligible vehicle. Marques such as BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus sat at the top of the list. Down near the bottom was a vehicle I only had a passing knowledge about – “Land Rover Discovery.” Little did I know at the time that after visiting all the dealerships, taking numerous test drives and kicking lots of tires I would end up as the proud owner of a Land Rover LR3. I fell in love with the LR3 the first time I saw it. Other than 8

a few problems at the very beginning of our time together, the LR3 has proven to be a great, reliable, “go anywhere” truck. My job at the time demanded off-road use in a variety of situations, from going up mountain trails to trekking out into the Arizona desert. The air suspension provides that “floating on a cloud” feeling; the sound system is second to none, even when I have it “cranked to 11” with hard rock playing on the iPod. I was hooked. I joined the Land Rover Club of San Diego, which we should really call the “Land Rover Cult of San Diego.” Even as I professed the greatness of Land Rovers. I constantly heard my friends saying, “Oh, those British cars, they are bad news” or, “Why didn’t you just get a Jeep”? But there is a problem with the LR3: The experience is almost too sterile. Even out in the sand dunes or rocky trails, inside the cabin is a quiet, peaceful experience that belies the environment outside. The dashboard comes loaded with but-

tons and knobs that control the dozens of computers that take care of the “hard work” of driving off-road. You just point the wheels in the direction you want to go and press the gas pedal to go there. I spent most of 2008 deployed to Iraq. While I was there, we ended up watching “The Gods Must Be Crazy.” Clearly, the Land Rover starred in that movie. I had never really thought about the older Series trucks; although, I did lust after the nearly unobtainable NAS Defenders. After watching the movie, the gears started turning in my head. Could I even find a Series Rover? Would it be legal in the States - even in California? When I returned from duty overseas, the thought of buying a Series still lingered with me. I asked around the local club, and to my surprise, no one owned a Series truck - lots of Defenders, but nothing older. Then, right here in San Diego someone put a ‘65 Series II-A RHD up for sale. “Runs great,” the ad read. I took a trip across town to see the truck in person, with one of my best friends in tow as an impartial voice. We looked all over the truck, crawled underneath, banged, poked and prodded. She seemed to be in good shape, with only light rust in the normal places. The truck did have lots of “Stupid Owner Tricks” from the New Zealander who had owned her for most of her life. I told the seller I would think about it and call him back. A week and a half later, I made an offer to purchase the Rover. Since the truck came with a tow bar, the now previous owner towed it over to my house. Everything came together and a few days later, I was the proud owner of a tired but promising Series II-A. Just sitting in the truck is an experience in itself. Whereas the LR3 features leather and modern plastic with digital readouts, computer screens and buttons festooned all over the interior, the II-A shouted “starkness” at its core. The smell brought back memories of the old VW Beetle my parents owned in years gone past; that familiar mix of gasoline, grease, and vinyl from the seats. The steering wheel looked worn down from where past owners had put their hands year after year. I took the Land Rover out for its maiden voyage down the street to the supermarket. Driving a right hand drive Rover for the first time felt strange enough, but double clutching was also a new experience. However, both proved easy to master and I soon found myself parked in front of the store. What proved more surprising was the response from onlookers in the parking lot. “What a cool car”, one of the skateboarders out front said. “I haven’t seen one of those in a long, long time”, said another man, easily in his late 70s. Buoyed by their reactions, I drove home, hooked even deeper. All of that would change the very next day. I had already starting doing a closer inspection of the truck, and had discov-

ered the directional signals did not work. Even though a lot of people here in Southern California don’t seem to know they exist, I consider turn signals important. I drove to a local Pep Boys for a new flasher. Walking up to the parts counter, I proudly stated that I had a 1965 Land Rover and needed a flasher. I watched the clerk enter information on his computer, heard a lot of “error beeps,” and watched him look bewildered as he said, “it’s not in the computer.” I realize that I may hear this often.. Once again, I found myself encouraged by another customer, this one driving a souped-up Nova SS, who said, “That thing is pretty cool.” That good feeling was about to change. On the way home, I drove up a small hill and noticed a marked loss of power. Pressing the accelerator only seemed to make it worse. Soon, I was barely doing 20 MPH on one of San Diego’s busiest streets. I barely crept into a parking lot near my house when I realize I have brought no tools with me. I swallowed my pride and called a friend with a Dodge Ram. He showed up in a few minutes and I jumped in to go to my house for a tow strap and some shackles. The first comment from his mouth, “Why didn’t you buy a Jeep?” I just smiled. For even as I am being towed home behind a Dodge Ram, an old couple in front of their house light up with smiles and waved to me. I’ll sort out the Series II-A and accept more waves in the future. P

Story & Photos by Tyler Mattson

[Tyler Mattson, Reno, NV, is a 17 year old junior at North Valleys High School and an Eagle Scout. He already owns three Rovers: a ’69 II-A Bugeye, a “highly modified” ’59 Series II 109”, and his “luxury ride,” a ’92 Range Rover Hunter. Here’s what happens when school is delayed one day–.ed]

I was raised on Land Rovers and don’t ever plan to change. In 17 years I’ve discovered a love for 4 x 4’s, camping and exploring the great outdoors. One Tuesday morning, I woke up to an announcement of a three-hour delayed start for school. Yes! I made a few phone calls and set up a little outing into the unknown. We all met at the local McDonalds at 8:00 and started out away from town. Our group consisted of three vehicles: Eli’s ‘81 Jeep CJ-5, Ryan’s ‘87 Toyota Land Cruiser and my 69’ Land Rover Series II-A 88” Bugeye. We headed down to a rock quarry and started the day playing on some hills and proving our dominance over each other. 14

We soon made it to a mud-soaked hill that proved too steep and too slick on our first attempts. We all gave our most valiant efforts to make it to the top and after more than 15 minutes of work my II-A finally made it. That aroused the natural male instinct of “anything you can do I can do better” and a few minutes later we were all safely at the top. Our next big challenge consisted of a rock-filled canyon full of tight turns and slippery with snow. We were doing fine until we made it to a very narrow section with a rock on one side and the canyon wall on the other. Eli’s Jeep and my II-A made it without a slip, but the much larger Land Cruiser was a different story. After a whole bunch of rock moving, a little work with a shovel and a lot of driver skill, Ryan made it through. The final challenge began with a rocky hill that was the only way to the top of our final goal that morning. We started up and I remembered that the very same hill was the place where I had stripped the drive flange of my 109” on a previous

attempt - and that rig had a Series III Salisbury axle. As the first vehicle up, I started the slow and methodical run. I climbed to the most difficult section and the Rover started to spin and slip. As the old saying goes, “it’s never over in a Rover,” the II-A just kept right on going all the way to the top. Next came Eli, who made the first section with no problem. The second, more difficult stretch, proved to be his shortcoming. He managed to set his CJ-5 on a pile of rocks that left him stuck good and proper. As another old saying goes “when in doubt, dig your way out.” We dug and manhandled his Jeep to the top. In the end, the 4-wheeling gods shunned Eli and just 50 yards from the top, his Jeep quit running. We hooked up a tow strap and I tried to drag him to the top. But in a contest between big rocky hill and a Rover towing a Jeep always tilts in the hill’s favor. We ended up backing slowly and carefully down the nasty little hill.

At the bottom, we realized it was time to go to school, so again we hooked a tow strap to the Jeep and sentenced the Rover to towing it until it jump started on the road. Once on the main road the Jeep went 100 yards before quitting again. On the side of the road, we dug out the tools and began the repairs. Twenty minutes of labor and a can of starting fluid later, the Jeep stirred back to life. Throughout this whole ordeal, the rig that everyone here calls “a piece of ****” known to the rest of us as a Series II-A, had no trouble at all; in fact, the Rover was the only vehicle to make it up every hill. We managed to limp into the school with just minutes to spare before school started. We went to class and continued our day of the not-so-average American teenager. P

heading up the 1st day of trails

[Matt Martin, Rovers North’s Marketing Director, beat out everyone else in Westford for the chance to attend the 2009 SCARR event. Read why we’re all jealous –ed.] Dirt, rain and mud. Fun, family and friends – and more mud… Everything’s bigger in Texas and the 2009 SCARR (South Central Area Rover Rally) was no exception. The Texas Rovers Club hosted the sixth anniversary event on April 16th-19th at the Barnwell Mountain Recreational Area. I went to cover the mirth and mud; hey, someone has to take on the tough jobs! My journey began with a flight to Tampa, Florida, where I met up with the industrious team from Land Rover Lifestyle (LRL) Magazine. They had just started to kit-out a trio of new LR3s, making them off-road warriors for their 1st Descents project – an effort to test the limits of the LR3 on the roughest terrain in North America. They would debut their decked-out LR3’s at SCARR and you could sense the team’s eagerness for their LR3s to be the kings of the mountain. They’d have to be patient though because we had some serious traveling to do first.

18

Our caravan headed west along the Gulf coast. We rounded Florida’s panhandle, cut through the oyster-littered shores of Alabama, roved through Mississippi and stopped for a quick tour of New Orleans before turning northwest and traveling along the last leg to the SCARR event. The Barnwell Mountain trails begin 5 miles outside of Gilmer, TX, about 120 miles east of Dallas. We ate up some serious highway miles getting there and the kitted out LR3s handled fantastically. After a comfortable 17 hour trip, we arrived at the event. We discovered a storm of activity and energy spread across the expansive event grounds. The Texas Rovers organization covers the entire state, with chapters in Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio. SCARR represents their major annual event. The event was packed. New faces arrived, old friends reunited and new friendships connected the over 160 enthusiasts in total. Everyone entered the event with the same common appreciation of the

savage grace their beloved Land Rovers – nearly 100 of them - could deliver. The Southern enthusiasts searched out the now-famous “LRL Lounge” tent in the camping area. The Lounge provided the perfect gathering spot for attendees to meet the people who give life to Land Rover Lifestyle. We also met with the organizers: Christopher Pullen - president of the Texas Rovers and Laura Shacklette - SCARR Events Coordinator and DFW EC, who shared the vision of the event. “It’s bringing people together with the same interests who love to wheel, see old and meet new friends that make SCARR success.” After a long day, we retired to our tents on the eve of the festivities. I have no idea if it was the change in time zones or my complete lack of camping skills, but the morning sun grabbed my eyelids and pulled them wide open. Sleepless and sore from the trip,

I decided to get up and take some early morning shots of the event area and the stable of Land Rovers. Indeed there were many impressive vehicles in attendance and it was nice to photograph them undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of the event. After a large breakfast, the group divided itself for the off-roading by trail difficulty. Rovers took off in groups to traverse the vast network of mountain trails reserved this weekend exclusively for the SCARR. This event differed from ones I’ve covered in the past: shorter trails meant attendees could tackle different conditions and make more runs. This provided more opportunities to socialize with the wide range of people. I saw many different driving styles, and gained even more appreciation for what Land Rover engineering made possible, no matter the condition or the driving style.

Getting ready to go play in the mud... Again

I also appreciated the engineering elegance and refinement that went into the LR3. This latest Land Rover tackles everything thrown at it, from dry rock to slick, deep mud with aplomb. I’ve driven LR3s off-road in Vermont’s forests and fields, Utah’s spectacular mountains and ravines and now Texas hill country. This superbly competent vehicle is destined to become the next enthusiast’s Rover of choice. As the last of the groups negotiated their way back to the main pavilion, a Texas-sized dinner awaited the hungry enthusiasts. We shared tales of the trail and compared wheeling strategies, successful and unsuccessful. After dinner, I joined the 1st Descents team and many SCARR attendees in the LRL Lounge for some collective relaxation before the next day of adventure. The shared love for the Land Rover marque felt as vast as Texas itself.

I had been to events before, but I was not prepared for the Texas-size flood of appreciation for Rovers North’s contributions to the Land Rover community. I found myself ushered around the campground like a foreign dignitary - each introduction more emphatically appreciative than the one before. The warm welcome continued well into the night; I’m still basking in it. The second missing preparation was clear as I peeked out of my tent the next morning – a proper rain jacket. If everything is big in Texas, so’s the rain! Yes, it rains in Vermont but not like this. The wide Southern sky broke open with a torrential downpour for most of the morning. The weather reduced the number of travelers on the trails, but never once dampened the spirit of the event. Through the rain you could see red mud blanketing every Land Rover. Mother Nature was giving out free paint jobs as a gift for respecting her land-

scape. The rain finally stopped around lunchtime and the grounds instantly reverted to the dry and dusty surroundings that met us upon arrival. The dry grounds presented a terrific opportunity for a group photo, while I got up close and personal with a nest of fire ants. This Texas ritual created much jollity amongst the Texans, who apparently know better than to stand on an anthill. Like the ants from my shoes, the enthusiasts scattered back to the trails for a few final runs as the event drew to a close. To mark another successful congregation of pavement defiance, the

assembly sat down for a group dinner. The highlight of the meal was a merchandise raffle from event sponsors. I would like to thank LRL Magazine, The Texas Rovers Club and everyone connected with SCARR for their hospitality during our stay. We left the event with a shared feeling of unity fueled by the love of a machine, the places it could take us and the people we met along the way. Don’t worry, red mud and fire ants, we’ll be back to see you soon. P

Join LRL as we take Land Rover’s LR3s and push them right to the limit on a few epic LRL trips. We take on challenging terrain and historic locations with temperatures from Speedo hot to Polar Bear cold, all in the name of adventure and a good time. Blood and sweat await those who make it, and green tears for those who are left behind. In case you can’t join us, we’re sharing the good times with The Rovers North News. Armchair enthusiasts will have the distinct pleasure of forgoing the sweat and the tears. We’ve kitted out our LR3s for the wide range of off-road experiences encountered in the US. To round out our Land Rover experience, we’re including a Defender 110 as our support truck. For these events we’ve teamed up with many sponsors but few more important than Rovers North, who have handled the bulk of our build needs. Final details seem to change as rapidly as the terrain conditions —but as things stand now, we're looking at six epic trips, combining challenge, history, a little romance, and one . . . well that last one clearly won’t be for everyone.

Doug Evilsizor is the founder and editor-in-chief of Land Rover Lifestyle magazine. Established in 2006, Evilsizor's vision for LRL arose out of his search for a highly capable 4wheel-drive vehicle to explore the mountains of Colorado, which at the same time would be equipped to cover the miles of highway travel required of a daily driver. Land Rover provided the solution in the form of a 1993 Range Rover LWB. LRL has taken a different path than other Land Rover loyalist magazines. Focusing on adventure, unique destinations, and the “mud and caviar” appeal of the Land Rover brand, LRL covers busted-knuckle adventures in unique and luxurious locales worldwide. The satisfaction of Land Rover ownership, coupled with Evilsizor’s own inclination for travel and exploration of peoples, places, and cultures, was the driving force to establish a lifestylebased Land Rover magazine in the U.S. Evilsizor lives with his wife and son, coordinating the magazine from the high desert of New Mexico, otherwise known as “Tumbleweed Mesa.”

Colorado to Utah: May We’ll travel expedition style for a few hundred miles trip from Montrose to Gateway, CO., ending at the Gateway Canyons Resort. Basically we'll venture across sections of the Kokopelli and Tabaguache (Tabawatch) Trails, together with a little rugged back country mapping. Along the way we’ll traverse challenging trails and water crossings, spending nights camping out under the starry sky. We'll be packing in/out everything, including fuel. Camel Invitational: June Although the Camel Club is alive and kicking in the UK, US enthusiasts can only dream about seeing these vehicles in person. LRL has tracked down 11 Camel Trophy vehicles in the US so far and we’re committed to bringing them together for an exciting event (for more information, see www.cameltrophy.co.uk).

Gustaf Kupetz has long been a Land Rover enthusiast – in his own words, he “Bleeds Green” – and drives either his Defender 90 or 110 all over the country in search and always finding an adventure. Currently, Gustaf is the Gear and Field Specialist for Land Rover Lifestyle magazine. Prior to this assignment Gustaf’s many adventures ranged from working “on the ice” in Antarctica, to being a Professional Off-Road Driver for the Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams. He was the 2002 and 2003 winner of the Adventure Team Challenge, has worked for the Land Rover Minneapolis dealership and has maintained an active membership in the Minnesota Land Rover Club. In 2008, Gustaf was elected to the Board of Directors of the Minnesota 4-Wheel Drive Association.

Sonora Trails and Fly-Fishing: July Possibly some of the most technical trails that we will encounter lay west of Sonora CA. We've stitched together 70 challenging miles with a secret fly-fishing hole somewhere in the middle. For this one you'll need to set aside a long weekend, camping and recovery gear, and a fishing rod slightly grander than the “Green Hornet duck pole” from Grumpy Old Men. 35

British Columbia: Late Aug-Sept Up in wonderful British Columbia we'll rediscover what Alexander Mackenzie learned some time ago—that BC rocks! All travel on this trip is off-road, with only one way in, and only two ways out for this 256-mile trail. This one could prove very challenging. Along the way we'll tackle mud, water, rocks and camping, of course. This one kicks off late summer to avoid the bugs. Vermont: Late Sept This 1st Descents trip will rekindle your romantic side, both for your spouse/significant other, as well as your Land Rover. We’ll kick off this fall colors tour at Rovers North in Westford and then traverse Vermont’s Class IV trails; we’ll open up some trails that have not been used for over 50 years. I'll be honest - you never know what you'll bump into back in the woods, but mystery and romance do go hand in hand, and we’re hoping for both on this trip. We’ll finish up at The Equinox resort in Manchester, the home of The Land Rover Experience, where we’ll have a few surprises. The Capstone: Winter 2009… weather permitting! The “You gotta be nuts, there is no effing way” trip - if you’re still reading, you’re a nut . . . but that’s good. It will be cold and will be in a place no one takes vehicles! This expedition requires the greatest planning and training. We can only take those vehicles and drivers that will help insure success. You must be fit, fun, clearheaded, hardworking, resourceful, with a can-do attitude. We'll be packing fuel, gear, food, guns, GPS, maps, sat phone, medical skills and local knowledge. It hasn't been done before. Maybe nobody wanted to do it, or maybe nobody should? If you can’t make it to one of the events, follow all the fun at LRLmagazine.com. Real time tracking, photos, and excitement will come to your smart phone or email inbox every day the vehicles are on the road or on the trail. Don’t let them drive through your home town without a hearty Land Rover wave of hello and inviting the crew in for a bit of tea before shoving off again.

Jason Paul Michaels took an unlikely route to his current position as Director of Sales and Marketing for LRL. A chance exposure to Camel Trophy Defenders enticed him to veer from his successful work in computer technology towards the propagation of a lifestyle based on Land Rovers. "A Land Rover somehow taps into that innate thread of adventure that exists within all of us. I dread to think some won’t ever experience it because they’ll never be exposed to a Land Rover. I guess that’s why I drive it.” Jason has attended numerous Rover rallies on the East Coast of as well as Moab and Texas rallies. Michaels and his father also competed together in the 2006 Australian Outback Challenge. He currently drives an expedition ready ’05 LR3. For now Michaels will focus on sharing the growing Land Rover lifestyle with all who will listen but one day dreams of piloting a Land Rover across Europe's eastern block countries into Russia, and across to Mongolia.

This article cannot replace proper first-aid training; only professional training from qualified agencies will give you the skills and mindset required to render responsible and quality emergency care. – Ed.] Backcountry First-Aid I am often asked: “What would you do if someone broke an arm or something on the trail?” My answer comes in two parts: first, keep that from happening by controlling risk and maintaining safe practices; and second, take proper action to render quality first aid. Then I must decide if the person stays on the trip or goes for advanced care. My first memory of a treatment for an injury comes from the time when I closed the car door on my fingers. My little kid fingers got a real good dose of classic Ford Fairlane American steel and man, did I scream bloody murder! My dad immediately took ice cubes from the freezer, wrapped the crushed pieces in a towel and enveloped my small hand with the icy concoction. Cool, calm and quick – didn’t even have to think – he just acted. My hero!! While most front country emergencies only require responders to keep the patient calm and dial 911, in the backcountry, 911 might not be an option. Even if help can be contacted, in the backcountry location/weather may inhibit any type of rescue via ambulance or helicopter. As we prepare for the worst-case scenario, we need to approach this issue recognizing the challenges of backcountry first-aid. Generally backcountry, or wilderness, first-aid comes into play when we are over one hour from definitive medical care. Definitive care is relative to Advanced Life Support (ALS) via ambulance or directly to immediate care from quality 38

emergency hospital services. In the backcountry it may take days, never mind hours, to get your patient to a hospital. I strongly recommend that anybody who spends time in remote regions receive training from the Wilderness Medicine Institute (www.nols.edu/wmi). There are plenty of choices based on your time, pocketbook, previous skill sets, and geographic location. Interested? Here’s how Wilderness First-Aid protocols confronts an emergency: Step 1 - Whether you see the incident or arrive shortly after; Stop and Survey the scene for safety. Before jumping in, look over the scene for hazards or danger to rescuers, bystanders and patients. Try to determine the Mechanism of Injury (MOI) and protect yourself with gloves, glasses – this is called establishing Body Substance Isolation (BSI). Putting on gloves also establishes an air of professionalism that helps calm the Patient (Pt). Determine the number of patients and begin to form a general impression of the extent of injuries. This all happens while you are approaching and sizing up the scene; we have not touched the patient yet. We now have two options: just think of the Clash song “Should I Stay or Should I Go!” Determine if the patient is very hurt or sick and requires a rapid assessment with immediate transport to an emergency care facility. Ideally the patient is relatively stable and you can do a focused exam to decide if the patient needs transportation to a care facility or if the situation can be managed on site.

Step 2 – Survey the patient – Identify yourself and level of training and obtain consent. Consent to treatment can be determined verbally by the patient saying “Help me,” or implied, if the patient needs help but can’t tell you. Establish the patient’s level of responsiveness and check for spinal injuries and the need for Cervical Spine Control (C-Spine control). Emergency response training will teach you these important steps. The ABC’s The ABCDE’s of treatment force us to stop to fix any glaring problems and look for hidden ones. For example, a patient screaming in pain might be unaware of a more serious injury. A smashed finger hurts like hell but the bleeding head wound needs more immediate attention. The damaged finger is called a distracting injury – taking our attention away from a more important injury. Follow the ABCDE’s below to identify and address the most threatening issues. A: Airway – Make sure it is clear and working. Is the patient speaking or not? Look into the mouth and clear the gum, chew or broken teeth from clogging the airway. Don’t just stick your finger in there as this could push that chunk of steak further in. Be careful and gentle. B: Breathing – Look, listen and feel for adequate breathing. Is it labored like an asthma attack, diminished or wet sounding? Is it shallow, spasmodic or regular? Put your ear near the mouth and listen for breath sounds and watch for chest for movement. C: Circulation – Check for bleeding, pulse (weak/strong), control bleeding and treat for shock. Sweep your hands slowly and carefully; don’t “paw” the patient. Look for pooling and make sure you don’t move the patient more than needed. There are prescribed protocols for ‘rolling’ the patient on their side to inspect the back (parts hidden by the ground contact). Take training on how to do this move before you need to do it. Be especially careful when dealing with a method of injury that makes spinal damage more likely. D: Disability – Calm the patient and stabilize the affected body part, especially with spine and neck injuries. For example, hold the wrist carefully if the patient complains of “broken” wrist. Light in-line traction and proper splinting will ease the patient’s pain level. E- Expose the serious, threatening injury. Be aware of the environment and don’t just cut off clothing. It may take hours or days to finally transport the patient and their clothing may be the only thing keeping them warm. Make sure the wound is exposed in a manner that will allow you to later utilize the clothing for warmth/cooling after the injury has been treated. Maintain the patient’s dignity and privacy.

At this point we have quickly inspected the patient and identified anything that may be life threatening. If necessary, we’ve called for help and made plans for evacuation. Remember to stay calm and professional, introduce yourself and level of training, tell the patient everything you are doing, don’t make promises, show consideration for privacy (kids, opposite sex) and be thorough. There are volumes more of information on this subject and you can never be too prepared. Again, please seek further training as appropriate. Stay safe out there. See you on the trail. First Aid Basics It is impossible to have the perfect kit. Whether you purchase a kit or create one yourself, these recommendations will provide you with a starting point. Keep your destination in mind. Are you going to the city park or traveling in the Darien Gap? It will help determine the availability of emergency services. A suggested kit: Equipment: trauma shears, tweezers, safety pins, scalpel, thermometer, BP cuff and stethoscope, rescue mask, emergency blanket, patient assessment forms, irrigation syringe, gloves. Wound gear: Povidone-iodine solution, antiseptic towelettes, sterile scrub brush, green soap sponges, wound closure strips, tincture of benzoin swabs, 2nd Skin dressings, Moleskin dressings, antibiotic ointment packets (some folks allergic to “triple” use “double” type), 1x3 fabric bandages, knuckle and fingertip fabric bandages, 4x4 sterile gauze pads, 3x4 non-stick gauze pads, 3 inch conforming roll gauze, 3” x 5yd Coban wrap, transparent film dressings (like Opcite), 1 inch cloth tape, 4 inch elastic wrap, SAM splint, triangular bandages, trauma dressings, various OTC meds like Aspirin, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Benadryl, Sudafed, Bactine to name a few types and brands. If you are going to jungle, high altitude or hostile areas, make sure you have the proper shots and specific meds. Remember that the most stocked and high-tech kit is not going to save you – knowledge and skill will. Get proper training! For everything to do with Bill Burke, visit www.bb4wa.com P

BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson

Ahem, it’s time to eat crow. Rovers North generously put my article about the QE I serving as an appealing prop for an L.L. Bean catalogue shoot on the cover of the Winter 2009 issue. In addition, I found myself compelled to mention its appearance to most of the 1,200 people who live on this island, the several friends I have off island, and post the story on my website. At the Maine Winter Romp, members of the Southern New Hampshire Land Rover Club asked to have their photos taken with the “famous QE I.” With all the humility of a privileged celebrity, I granted their requests. Meanwhile, I waited for the catalogue to arrive in the mail. I woke up one March morning to a strange sound coming over the ocean from the west. This frightening noise, sounding like a guffaw of derision, emanated from Rovers North the day the L.L. Bean Outdoor Gear and Clothing Catalogue arrived in Westford. On page 54, a handsome guy stands next to an open tailgate; on page 63, two stunning models lean over a windshield. You’d have to be Maurice or Spencer Wilks to recognize that those were Land Rover parts in the photos; you’d have to be me to know there were on my car. As economists remind us routinely now, deflation – whether of money or ego – is a terrible thing. I do appreciate that Allen Padgett, Lafayette, GA, and Laura Bright, Kingsport, TN, recognized the car as mine. Larry Goldstock, Boca Raton, FL, whose ’73 Series III figures prominently in a Ralph Lauren ad, and John Kountz, Laguna Beach, CA, whose ’67 Series II-A has been featured in GQ and QST amateur radio magazines, may now step into the limelight. Enjoy the 15 minutes of fame, gentlemen. I’ve discovered it’s fleeting. 52

To paraphrase Dorothy Parker, the acerbic writer and critic, there are two things you can do to help the aspiring Land Rover owner. The first is to give them copies of The Rovers North News. The second is to shoot them while they’re still happy. My most recent aspiration involved installing a new master cylinder in the QM I, ‘66 Series II-A 88” number two. According to my CD of the Land Rover Service Manual, this read like a simple job. You remove 6 bolts from the toeboard area inside the car and remove the return spring from the pedal. In reality, you accomplish these tasks while lying on your back inside the car, your legs akimbo bracing yourself on the ground – sort of like doing the limbo at a beach party, only sober. After calling your massage therapist or chiropractor, you then assume a new position leaning over the open hood, unbolting the brake/clutch fluid reservoir. You should also remove the brake and clutch line fittings from the cylinder so as not to damage them. You then return to your Beach Party Limbo position under the toeboard and twist the pedal assembly to one side, removing it from the car. Take the pedal assembly to a vise and unbolt the master cylinder. Installation of the new cylinder is the opposite of removal –yeah, right! Ahem, shoot me now, please. For solace, I posted a question on the Rovers North Forum asking for the most miserable repair on a Series Land Rover. The responses filled 3 pages of postings. One disgusted enthusiast reported that, “as of today I can safely say it is replacing the headliner on a 109 after pack rats have got in there and built a nest.” Another reported that, “I’m in the middle of refurbishing the front axle assembly: differential input seal, differential gasket, axle case seals, swivel ball seals, wheel bearings and seals, brake wheel cylinders, brake lines, shoes, steady posts, springs and drums. Plus, it’s my first time working on 11” brakes. At the moment, I’m finding this to be a very miserable job.” A few voted for replacing clutch master cylinders on LHD vehicles. See, they are well hidden beneath the left side wing. Whether you contort your hands and wrists to remove the master cylinder and lines, or you remove the entire wing and pedal box to expose the master cylinder, you’re in for a miserable time. A female enthusiast from St. Louis opted for replacing the pedal covers. As she wrote, “Geez Louise, bending those thick steel tabs on the replacement covers is just ridiculous!

I even prebent them using pliers but still found it frustrating to try to complete the bends to secure to the pedals. My hands are so sore from squeezing for what seemed like an hour.” Votes were also received for replacing spring shackle bushings, which often call for massive torches or Sawzalls, removing a rusty steering relay [which is the only time you ever change them out] or “replacing the three tiny screws that hold the speedometer cable to the transmission.” Two categories of repairs galvanized everyone’s attention: fixing the bodge jobs of previous owners and “whatever repair has to be done at night, along the road, in the wet snow, and from underneath the car.” As one enthusiast remembered with a shiver, “I-40 east of Flagstaff, in December, 2:00 am, with a steady 35 mph wind,no gloves and just a light jacket, cleaning a clogged fuel filter with carb cleaner, I thought I was going to lose my freakin’ fingers.” Ahem, may I have the revolver back, please? While working in the QE I offroad on the island, I neglected to scout ahead and drove the Rover right onto a large unmovable boulder. The front bumper buckled into a deep frown. The replacement task should have been simple. The new Rovers North galvanized bumper looked identical to the old one. The holes matched up exactly. All that should have been required is to remove the 4 bolts that held the old one in place. I took additional solace in the fact that my bumper had been off the car in 2003, so these bolts should be in great shape. Only a set of Hellas sitting on the bumper would provide an impediment to an easy removal and replacement. Land Rover cleverly designed the bumper bolts to reside in a cupped area that meant you could not get a ring spanner in there, only an open wrench. And it would help if the 1/2” wrench was of the long “professional mechanic” type, not the shorter standard Craftsman wrenches that I use. A 3/8” ratchet would not turn the corroded bolt head so I moved on to my 1/2” heavyweight. Even the larger ratchet required two hands to pull it, which left my right knee to provide leverage to hold the short open end wrench in place – like the position that Cameron Diaz held for one of her kicks in “Charlie’s Angels.” For one bolt, I even had to get out my breaker bar. During the pleasant 30 minutes of wrenching, I watched each nut and washer fall to the ground and disappear in the dirt. So I got out a magnet and found them all. The bolts had been covered with Never-Seize (thank you East Coast Rover!); still, they were a bear to remove. I tried to chase the threads with a tap and die set, but found I did not have the right sized units for these bolts and nuts. So I sprayed them liberally,

put on a new coat of Never-Seize, and tried to put the new bumper on. That’s when I discovered proof that Land Rover must have employed child labor constructing my Series II-A. No adult-size hand could hold a washer and nut in place in the tiny inset of the bottom of the bumper. I balanced them on a greasy finger and offered them up to meet the bolt. Cleverly, Rover also designed the inset so you can’t see anything from underneath; if you lie on your back, you can’t line up the bolt properly. Don’t ask me how I know. One hour later, the new bumper sat on the car, lining up perfectly with the crank hole and pulley. Four bolts, on and off, requiring one hour’s labor. Yikes! Of course field repairs do appear on the mental radar for thousands of enthusiasts. While newer Land Rovers might require more involved repair procedures, they also require far fewer of them. Rovers North News correspondent Tami Sutherland (’05 LR3) and Dan Chapman (‘98 Discovery Series I) drove from Virginia to Maine in May and graced me with an overnight visit to this island. As we drove around in the QE I, Tami listened to my “to-do” list of repairs and she quietly suggested that she did not find field repairs that much fun. She did not mind preventative maintenance, but she found “sitting offroad on a trail while someone up ahead fixes their car” unentertaining. Tami has off-road credibility, driving her used LR3 to events in Florida and Texas several times. Barry Enis, Kent, CT, a former airline mechanic, always reminded me that the electronic and computer systems built into modern aircraft, properly maintained, have proved hugely reliable over millions of miles. Similar systems and sensors have found their way into contemporary Land Rovers, enabling them to achieve highway and off-road capabilities unimaginable in Series Land Rovers. In 6 years of daily use, the laptop I’m using now has required one replacement power supply, accomplished in one hour. And this laptop bounces around in the back my II-A much of the time. Maybe some of this technology is quite rugged and dependable. After their stop in Maine, Dan and Tami continued in his kitted-out Discovery to Nova Scotia, Labrador and Quebec, before returning to Virginia. As highlighted in Gustav Kupetz’s article on LR3s in this issue, the newest Land Rovers might have more complex technology but still keep reliability and dependability in the forefront of their engineering. Both are “travelers with a passion for British classic cars and Land Rovers.” With Andrew’s 40th birthday came the decision to celebrate by touring the world in a Land Rover. Here’s their first installment of their travels. –ed.]

Story & Photos by Andrew & Karen Taylor

Having too much time on your hands feels like a luxury; it can also prove extremely expensive. Well that’s my experience, so let me explain the situation. In the winter of 2007 I visited family in Perth, Australia. I boarded the return flight home to the UK as a totally rational, slightly conservative, thirty-something quickly heading towards becoming a forty-something. Getting back to work remained my main priority at the time of take-off. By the mid point of the flight I had totally re-planned my life and its key drivers.

Upon stopping in Dubai to refuel, I duly disembarked but instead of heading off to buy the ubiquitous gold or latest electronic gadgetry, I found myself on a mission – to a store selling Land Rover magazines. As I hadn’t read one in years, the publication date would not matter. I needed a Land Rover fix. Once ensconced in my seat the plan underwent further refinement (after all, this was a long flight). Buy a Land Rover, not your normal Defender 90 or 110, but a big 130, kit it out for expeditions and go travelling, maybe not now but sometime when I retire

(which is at least 15 years away, if not longer given the current economic climate). It all made perfect sense to me. However there was one fundamental flaw in the plan - convincing my long suffering wife. Would she do the usual, simply smile and say, “Yes dear, great idea, by the way what would you like for dinner?” Probably. I landed the question, held my breath and waited and heard her say, “Great idea. Let’s do it! I’ve been thinking we should do something different with our lives.” Well, that’s when the panic set in.

The Defender 130 is a relatively rare vehicle in the UK. Most wind up with utility companies for hauling equipment across fields and rough terrain in order to gain access to power lines and the like. The 130 tag is actually a misnomer as the wheel base is 127”. Originally Land Rover Special vehicles built this model, by extending a 110 chassis up to 127”. Today enthusiasts still refer to early examples as “127s.” Also, the British military bought quite a few equipped with V8 engines and used them as gun carriages. Today Land Rover produces the 130 on the same production line as the other Defenders. It comes in two basic configurations, single cab or crew cab.

55

Most purchasers of the crew cab prefer the High Capacity Pick Ups (HCPU). We elected to look for a 130 HCPU Crew Cab with a retrofitted rear hardtop. Soon we had spotted a pre-registered 130 for sale only 60 miles away from central London. After a quick blast down the motorway we arrived, only to find that the vehicle had been sold. Upon seeing our clear disappointment the salesman announced that they had ordered a 2008 130 with the new Puma engine as a demonstrator. This became our Land Rover, subsequently named “Doobie Doo.” The Puma engine is a four cylinder turbo charged 2.4 liter diesel engine introduced in 2007 in order to meet European environmental legislation [see the Rovers North News, Fall 2007 –ed.]. “Doobie Doo” came equipped with practically every extra a 130 gets. Since it’s viewed as a workhorse, that’s not much – this means no leather, alloys or hi-fi upgrades on the options list. Within 15 minutes of entering the dealership we had bought our 130. Although poorer and awaiting the delivery of our car for two months, we still had to carry out all the modifications. Trek Overland constructed the model of hardtop; to keep things simple we gave them the contract for all the work. This involved fabricating and colour coding the hard top, fitting a Howling Moon roof tent, shower cubicle and side awning, fitting front and rear roof racks, designing and fitting a pumped water system as well as an electrical system including audio/visual. The side lockers house different equipment. One serves as a kitchen with power and water outlets, another as an electrical cupboard containing main hook up points, 1000 watt inverter, 12v and 240v power sockets, auxiliary battery charger and audio/visual outlet points. The remaining two lockers serve as storage. In the main rear area an Engel 45 fridge sits on runners; the rest is racked out for carrying tents and storage boxes. There are plenty of 12v outlets, too. 56

Optimistically, we took the Rover on a three-week shakedown trip to Spain. We returned with a long list of problems to be resolved, from the roof tent installed the wrong way round to a water system that leaked so badly that we could not use it. In true Land Rover style we just got on with it and returned the Land Rover to Trek Overland upon our return. Trek Overland corrected these problem but we were highly disappointed. The biggest driving issue, uncovered in Spain, was an intermittent power loss. Once back in the UK we took the Land Rover to the nearest dealership. There, we loaded their loaner van with 80 bottles of Spain’s finest Rioja wine and returned back to central London. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty turbo unit, which they duly changed out for us. After the repair the vehicle still felt off tune to me and subsequent investigations by another dealer tracked down the problem to a loose wire in a terminal block. This seems more likely to have been the root cause of the problem as the Puma engine has given great service in its original guise in Ford Transit vans throughout Europe. So with the shakedown trip to Spain and the subsequent repairs, we’re planning our trip to the U.S., Canada, and then overseas again to New Zealand. Karen and I have sabbaticals from our work for a year and as I write this the Land Rover is being loaded out for shipping to Los Angeles. As the old song says, “California here we come!” We’ll be updating our travels in future articles in the Rovers North News. SIGHTINGS A ferry boat, loaded down to its gunwales, barely makes it across the bay to the island home of the Editor. When he sees a boat sitting that low in the water, he knows that the mailbag with the Sightings must be aboard the ship. Sure enough, this issue’s Sightings required a great deal of labor – cutting in significantly to Land Rover maintenance time. As always, it's helpful for rookies to review the rules for Sightings - it can be just as useful for the grizzled Sighting veterans as well. Land Rover’s iconic shapes appeal to children of all ages. That’s why we’re happy to send a mug to Chloe Miller, Fairburn, GA, and Gordon Gunn, [see Rule #6] who spotted a Land Rover in a Matchbox cars commercial, and to Jonah Ivy, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, who found a Defender and a Range Rover in his latest Legos catalogue. While shopping for their kids and family in the Garnet Hill catalogue, Betty Moody, Franconia, NH, Jack Nardone, Hampton, NH, Durk Tyson, Greenville, NC, Steve Andrews, Easton, MD, and Karen Minner, Carnation, WA paused from their shopping to admire the Defender 110 in the shots. Eddie Bauer has featured Land Rovers often in their catalogues. Their Spring ‘09 catalogue shows a Defender 110 on duty in Belize. Duane Fitzgerald, Lowell, MI, Erik Brown, Menlo, GA, spotted a Series II on the cover of the Colorado Mountain Industries fire fighting equipment catalogue. Josh McLain, Rochester, NH, noted that the 2009 Husqvarna equipment catalogue has an 80’s Land Rover 90 on the cover. Duane Fitzgerald, Lowell, MI, Cullen Smith, Niwot, CO, Greg Coffman, Coshocton, OH, Milton Milner, Hendersonville, NC, Maxine Kelly, Bridgeton, NJ, Ann Williamson, Delanson, NY, Robert Alley, Kennesaw, GA, Kate Rosa, Truckee, CA, Sandy Goeta, Tampa, FL, James Dargan, Plymouth, MA, Charles Aftosmis, Greensburg, PA, Durk Tyson, Greenville, NC, Tom Proctor, Frenchtown, NJ, Luis Pacheco, Portland, OR, Dan Parrow, Springfield, MA, Paul Dandini, Somerville, MA, Brian Gassner, Fallon, NV, and Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI, also spotted the Defender. J L Powell ran a Land Rover in their catalogue earlier this year, and Milton Milner, Hendersonville, NC, James Dargan, Plymouth, MA, Cullen Smith, Niwot, CO and Michael Beckley, Sheridan, OR, spotted the return of a Defender to their next catalogue.

Movie producers know the visual impact of Land Rovers and they appear in lots of films. James Crockford, Tres St-Rempteur, Quebec, Canada caught X-Man Wolverine trailer with a Defender in it. Also, Derek Leath and Josev [see Rule #2] saw Land Rovers in “Yes Men.” The British film Transporter 3 features several Land Rovers, reports Eric Johnson, Madison, WI. The movie Tribute has a Discovery, notes Moky Corbett, Missoula, MT, and Purple Violets has a Defender 90, says Ben Sands, Bandera, TX. Shawn Chummar [see Rule #2] spotted a Discovery in What Doesn’t Kill You and Matthew Cook, Soldotna, AK, found a Rover in Outbreak. Josev [see Rule #2] was “dragged by my wife” to see He’s Just Not That Into You. On television, Land Rovers seemed to be everywhere. Ray Burton, Soddy Daisy, TN, saw a Defender on the battlefield in a Discovery Military Channel program. Stephen Flickenschild, Walden, NY, saw a Series Rover in a news program on Iraq War contractors. James Jones, Tampa, FL, reminds us that a Range Rover appears in front of a building in Rules of Engagement on CBS. Mark Fails, Palmyra, PA, and Shawn Cummar [see Rule #2] notes that informercial pitchman Billy Mays drives an LR3 hauling a film production trailer in the show Pitchman. Nicholas Dover, Cowansville, Quebec, saw a Defender in Barbados on the FFC documentary Allergy Planet. Michael Willaford, Raleigh, NC, watched the BBC program Top Gear and saw a program on badly-driven lorries. On Smokiing Gun, Corrie Dashnaw, Idaho Falls, ID, saw a man pulling a Defender with his beard. Patricia Jensen, Leesburg, VA, saw an MSNBC special on dog handlers and noted that one uses a Land Rover in his work. Jeff Downey and Lisa Croll, Battersea, Ontario, saw a Discovery in a commercial; they were so excited that they forgot to mention the subject of the commercial. John Karlsson, Hope Valley, RI, spotted a Defender and a Range Rover in a Keith Olbermann Show feature on futures trading. Rusty Jackman, Pocatello, ID, spotted Land Rovers in Hidden Potential on HGTV, and on the Spike show DEA. John Rain [see Rule #2] watched a Series II’s spare tire on the show Cash Cab. We’ve mentioned The Unit and Grey’s Anatomy before, but Kevin Foster, Prospect, VA, noted the presence of a Range Rover again, Michael Willaford, Raleigh, NC, saw the 109 on Grey’s Anatomy, and Tom Flaherty, Scituate, MA, saw the 109” on Bones. Alton

Sightings Rules: Rule #1: All Sightings receive appreciative recogntion but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2: Sightings should find Land Rovers where you might not expect them. This rules out Land Rover sales advertisements, off road magazines, British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. Rule #3: At an ever-changing date before publication, we close off the Sightings. If we've mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won't mention it again. If you're new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Welcome aboard! Rule #4: We're not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue. 62

Rule #5: Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention when space permits. Rule #6: Psst.. if we can’t read your name and address because of atrocious penmanship we can’t recognize the Sighting or potentially send you a mug. Psst… E-mail submissions – remember we can’t send you a mug via e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7: Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might have made an error. Let us know if you think you’ve been jobbed. We’ll review everything but the decision of the Editor is final. P

Brown of Good Eats drives a Defender, reports Matt Hutchison, Hendersonville, TN. The Discovery Channel specializes in wrecking cars, so Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI, was saddened to watch a yellow Defender’s destruction in Destroyed in Seconds. Eric Stevens [see Rule #2] noted that on a web newscast about the discovery of ancient humanoid fossils, the scientists drove a Land Rover to the site. Gene Lytle, Boulder Creek, CA, watched a Robby Bourdain mountain bike video in which he’s driving a topless 88” through a lake in British Columbia. Anonymous noted that the British group Mudskippers has a Land Rover on their website. On the Rhino Records “Very Best of the Grateful Dead,” there’s the unmistakable backside of a Series Rover, notes Paul Schram, Churubusco, IN. Also, on a historical note, Brian Girasoli, Storrs, CT, read a news article on Ted Kennedy in the Boston Globe online and noted a Series 109. Erik Johnson, Madison, WI, saw the Discovery used in mobile antenna ads. Matt Joyce, Chester, MD, reads CE magazine. He’s quite pleased that a civil engineering magazine would feature a Land Rover in an article on international engineering contracts. More surprising is the inclusion of a Wachovia Securities ad in Registered Rep magazine. Larry Goldstock, Boca Raton, FL, Adam Pearsall, Queensbury, NY, and Sean McDade, Marblehead, MA, spotted the ads. Glenn Massie, Ingersoll, Ontario, and Brian Eberts, Dunsfold, Ontario, both saw a Canadian Auto Association ad for insurance featuring a Defender confronting an elephant. David Ducat, Lebanon, CT, saw a Land Rover behind the disrobing models in an Armani ad. Arthur Au, Berwyn, PA, Bill Adams [see Rule #2], Will Butler, Nicholson, GA, Erik Haunold, Boone, NC, and Greg Akin, Abilene, TX, spotted a Land Rover in a John Deere commercial. Bill Kendall, Centreville, VA, saw a Rover at work in an article in Fly Past magazine.
