Dear Rovers North, I want to thank you, and especially Steve Haskell, for all of your help and advice. Also thank you for really going out of your way to get me the correct shocks overnighted on a Friday. I drove around yesterday quite a bit and was surprised by the ride – it is excellent. I have ridden in a Discovery II with an OME kit and it was way too stiff for anything other than fully loaded overlanding. The ProComp springs/Terrafirm shocks seem to be a great combination. Of course I also changed tire sizes too so that action had a positive impact on the ride, too. My recommendation…start advertising this combination in your catalogue and on your website as your “Discovery II Lift Kit.” It is really worth letting people know you have it. My wife and I first encountered iconic Land Rovers the same way as many readers of a certain age - through “Born Free,” “Daktari” and “The God’s Must be Crazy.” While dating in the early 1990’s, Raymie visited me in Costa Rica where she professed amazement at seeing many Series Land Rovers in use throughout that country. My sister also lived there and drove a pastel green Series II-A 109” Station Wagon with a 2.25 diesel. We took that truck all over San Jose and the surrounding cities and, although slow, loud and smelly, we both loved it. It never failed to start and it never failed to bring us home. Not far from the house in which I lived, an old green 88” sat on the side of the road, resting on its axles, with a tree growing

through the engine compartment. Every time we passed that 88” we dreamed of bringing it back to the U.S. During that decade the only Land Rovers that caught our eyes were Defenders—my wife calls them “Destroyers.” When some friends bought a shiny black Range Rover in late 2007, we were reminded of the old green 88” with the tree growing through it back in Costa Rica. A search on Craigslist and eBay quickly found a handful of Series Land Rovers for sale around the country. That seemed so inexpensive and so obtainable (pause for laughter from more experienced enthusiasts)! The long-dormant bug had been awakened! My wife wanted a 109” 5-door, preferably right hand drive. About two weeks later, one appeared for sale on Ebay. Located in New Mexico, it was owned by an U.S. Army Captain who had purchased it in England while

All of this combined on a galvanized chassis will in Seattle to complete the transfer. We faced another major issue for our daily use of the 109” in the transmission on the Rover. The previous owner had purchased a reconditioned unit in England back in 2002; by now, second gear had become nearly impossible to engage when cold and in neutral the gearshift seemingly roamed all over a wide area before finding the right gear. I longed for a five speed and looked a several alternatives, even including a Ford 3-speed RTS transmission. A Series III rebuilt transmission seemed like one alternative but I had concerns about its longevity when connected to my Chevy 250 engine. Then Gord’n suggested New galvanized chassis and R380 gearbox upgrade. Rovers magazine

make the 109” a much more comfortable daily driver for highway use and a long-lived member of our family. It took some very clever craftsmanship on Gord’n’s part to get the transmission and starter to mate with the Scotty’s Adaptor and the new transmission, but he made it happen. Finally, the moment arrived, the day we planned to take the Rover home with us. At 11 p.m. one night, Gord’n tacked the final step of bolting on the five doors. One, the driver’s door, hung at an angle and would not latch properly. We had decided on galvanizing the bulkhead and apparently it had warped slightly during the galvanization process [a common problem –ed]. Once again, Gord’n’s ingenuity solved the problem. After loosening all the bolts on the driver’s side of the bulkhead, he took a 6 foot steel pipe and strapped it at an angle over the bumper and bumperette. This became the fulcrum. Then he used a ratchet strap attached to the chassis crossmember to hold the bottom of the pipe in place. Finally, using a come-along attached to a steel plate bolted to the upper hinge mount, he slowly pulled the upper part of the bulkhead forward—straightening it in place and still attached to the windshield, roof, fender, chassis and everything else! In less than thirty minutes, the driver’s door hung perfectly and shut with a light touch.

During this entire experience I learned that there are a million little details that make projects like this so challenging and Land Rover experts like Gord’n so valuable. Looking back over this project, I can see countless points at which I would have become disheartened and frustrated and turned ten months into several years. As of this writing we’ve had the 109” back for three months and 1500 miles. Like anyone who has not exercised for a while, it took a couple of weeks for the 109” to limber up, but it runs beautifully now that it’s getting

daily exercise. The combination of the 3.54 axle ratios, the Ashcroft 5-speed and the Chevy 6 with the chassis and all the other galvanized parts has given us just what we hoped for—the 109” that we will keep forever! As the sun rises through the mist you catch a glimpse of a white rhino, then out of the corner of your eye you detect movement in the brush—wow—it is a giraffe. Surely you are in Kenya, Mozambique or perhaps Tanzania. As your senses clear, you remember… “I am in Cumberland, Ohio, at 'The Wilds'”. Five years ago the 60 members of The Green Oval The weekend began with a Friday night Guild faced the tragic dilemma of being an enthusocial, where guests enjoyed gourmet hors siast club in a state with no d’oeuvres at sunset overlooking The Wilds public off-road areas. strip mine” that today is home to the one of the largest and most innovative wildlife conservation center in the world, named “The Wilds”. Not only has the land been reclaimed from its previous life as a strip mine, but that restored landscape now provides an open range habitat for some of the world’s rarest species. In the recent Land Rover video documentary, “In Search of the Experience”, Wilds CEO Dr. Evan Blumer was quoted as saying, “Effective solutions start with strong leadership in scientific study and research, and individual empowerment through creative education.” The Wilds has embraced this philosophy and promotes the educational opportunities for all age groups; most recently the highly-regarded Columbus Zoo (Jack Hannah still serves as president emeri-

tus) has assumed operation and management of The Wilds. Evan Blumer’s forward thinking led to the exclusive relationship between The Green Oval Guild and The Wilds for access to and management of unutilized portions of their property. Best of all, The Wilds, located in Cumberland, sits only 50 miles from Columbus. Apart from The Wilds animal management area of 5,000 acres, there is an additional 5,000 acres of diverse rolling and wooded terrain for offroading. The Green Oval Guild maintains off-road trails and schedules its use by Land Rover dealers for Wheels events, and invites other clubs to share in these challenging trails. Future plans include the construction of a ropes course and equestrian trails. Five years ago The Green Oval Guild, in conjunction Land Rover Dublin, the local Land Rover dealer, hosted the first annual “Wilds Safari”. It was a one-day event with about 15 trucks. Over the next couple of years the event grew to include over 50 trucks and guest appearances and off-road instruction by Bill Burke. The 2010 Fifth Anniversary “Wilds Safari” morphed into a three-day event last June with 75 vehicles from Ohio and surrounding states. The weekend began with a Friday night social, where guests enjoyed gourmet hors d’oeuvres at sunset overlooking The Wilds pasture with all sorts of exotic game. Overnight accommodations for the event ranged from authentic yet comfortable

Mongolian yurts to primitive camping onsite. Saturday activities began early with registration at the Event Headquarters Tent where participants could purchase event tee shirts or get some off-road modifications from one of the vendors. The trails at The Wilds encompassed a wide variety of off-roading opportunities; at the event we divided the Rovers present by offroad modifications and the owner’s tolerance for challenging trails. Trails ranged from mild to wild. The first trail called “The Course,” was actually built by Hummer to unveil the H-2 for the media. It is in an open rolling meadow and features a dozen or so man-made obstacles including a small rock crawl section. Other trails developed by The Green Oval Guild are much more challenging ones in wooded areas. After a half day of ‘wheelin’ everyone gathered at Event Headquarters for a cookout lunch buffet and live auction of off-road gear. One-hundred percent of the auction proceeds were donated to The Wilds to support their mission of education and conservation. The gift of auction proceeds has become a GOG annual tradition. Saturday continued with another afternoon of 16 Rovers magazine


off-roading and a night run conducted by The Green Oval Guild trail guides. As dawn broke on Sunday, Rob McBurney, The Wilds COO, led a caravan of Rovers behind the scenes on a “back country” tour of the facility. He took the group through some breathtaking scenery, while talking about their program to re-introduce Native American prairie grasses and other native North American habitats. The ‘piece de resistance’ was a stop at the newly completed carnivore center to get an up close and personal experience with their three carniv-

orous species—African wild dogs, Cheetahs, and African Doles. In years past, Rob even arranged for the group to see the Cheetahs and wild dogs being fed. All-in-all this annual event has proven to be a pretty unique adventure for Land Rover enthusiasts. I remembered an enthusiast in the early 1990’s who used to commute from New Jersey into New York City daily in his Series III Lightweight; I shuddered and then decided to use public transportation when visiting New York this trip. My walks around Manhattan simply confirmed what Land Rover’s sales offices know already – Range Rovers, Range Rover Sports, LR4’s and Discovery II’s sell in great numbers around Manhattan. They appeared routinely at intersections throughout the city from Wall St. to Times Square, east side, west side, all around the town. When you see one in rural New England, you stop and gawk; in New York City I found them as routine as celebrities around Broadway theaters.

When you have a 45 year old Land Rover every trip has the potential for adventure. In December I took a 600 mile round trip from Maine to Connecticut to visit friends for Christmas. Naturally I waited until the last minute before realizing that I had not completed an ignition tuneup since last spring. I threw the box of parts from Rovers North into the Rover and just hoped for the best. cylinder; 109” Rovers require 11” drums, another set of sores and two cylinders, or one additional chance for a leak. In either case, step 1 is to remove the wheel. All shade tree mechanics must thus confront the effects of the dreaded pneumatic air gun which attaches the lug nuts at about 1 million pounds PSI. Generally speaking, only MMA fighters or weightlifters can actually free the lug nuts with the wrench provided by the automobile manufacturer. For my Series Rover, I used a can of PB Blaster, a breaker bar with my H-Lift jack as an extension to start the lug nuts (You might prefer my alternate technique of jumping on the breaker bar while steadying myself by holding onto the wing mirror.). With the wheels off the car you can now attempt to remove the brake drums. Mine had not been touched in years, assuring that corrosion, old mud, and brake crud had cemented them in place. The short screws that tighten the drum onto the hub required much pounding with an impact screwdriver before removal. The drum presents you with a compound problem; you need to pound it with a hammer hard enough to remove it, but delicately enough not to shatter it – particularly when you live on an island and perform this task on a Sunday when the car must absolutely, positively be ready for Monday. Land Rover (and Rolls Royce, I’m told) provides you with a threaded hole in the drum to aid in removal, provided that you have the right sized bolt. I dove into my bolt collection several times before I gave up (I know I have one somewhere), took a piece of wood as a drift, and started tapping along the arc of the drum. Many promises to a Supreme Being were made in my hopes of getting divine intervention to slide the drum off the shoes, and a mere 30 minutes later, I found my prayers answered as the drum slipped off the worn-out shoes. Happily, I found the wheel cylinder rubber in great shape, cleaned off the accumulated gunk inside with brake cleaner [about one can per brake], and prepared to install the new shoes. Each time I remove brake shoes and springs, I vow to remember where each spring attaches to ptins or holes, and each time I find I must turn again to my manuals. The Haynes Manual photos help but the best drawings I ever found reside on the pages of my reprinted Series I factory manual. Looking carefully at the superb line drawing of the front brakes confirmed that once again, my short term memory had failed me, and that the top spring [the red one] connects the peg on the leading shoe to the peg on the backing plate behind the trailing shoe. You can preassemble the spring [the shorter black one] and ring tab on the bottom of the shoes and muscle it into place, but for that troublesome top spring behind the shoes, you should really have a pair of brake

spring pliers that look like the device Steve Martin used as the maniacal dentist in “Little Shop of Horrors.” Since no contemporary cars use drum brakes, you can often find these in the bargain bins at auto parts stores; mine cost me $2.99. These pliers do make the miserable job of stretching the spring a long distance much, much easier; using needle nose pliers will only drive you crazier.

Dick O’Kane, in his splendid book “How To Repair Your Foreign Car,” described working on your British car as a sort of “sporting proposition.” So when you replace worn out, leaking or broken brake parts on your Land Rover, you’re really engaged in “a game to see who is more clever – you trying to figure it out or the designer who figured how to get it on in the first place. When the thing finally comes off and lands on your foot, polite applause, you’ve won.” I bow to the silent crowd of birds and squirrels watching me and move onto the passenger’s side wheel.

Recent cultural trends indicate a frightening tolerance of fashions and style from the ’80’s, particularly the return of certain colors to the public palette. Dupont produces paint for auto manufacturers and reported in Autoweek that silver, black and white/pearl are the most popular colors for today’s cars. Distressingly the classic British greens barely make the current list of favorite colors. Worse yet Dupont acknowledged “a trend towards brown and beige gaining preference.” This should cause shudders through every Land Rover enthusiast. In the dark days of the late 1970’s – 1980’s, Land Rover, anxious to sell as many cars as possible, bowed to the popular will and produced Rovers in truly hideous colors: brown, or “windswept dung” and beige, or “dirt,” painfully come to mind. Let us pray that Land Rover holds firm during this decade and refuses to reintroduce those appalling shades. /// Rovers magazine

When he moved from London he sold his “round the world” 2008 Defender 130 and replaced it with a decades-old Land Rover 90 with a normally-aspirated diesel engine. Here’s his report from Scotland – ed.

Compiled by Jeffrey Aronson Throughout the decades, Land Rover owners have welcomed the arrival of winter. For those in southern climes it means you can turn off the air conditioners; for those in the northern latitudes, bring on the snow, ice, slush or heavy rains. My 45-year-old Series II-A might leak and seemingly suck in cold drafts from the outside, but my, doesn’t it bound through snow drifts and across slick fields and roads. Defender owners share some leaks and drafts, but treat winter driving with disdain. Land Rover friends with Discoverys or LR 3’s, Range Rover Classics or P-38’s share the same élan and do so in supreme comfort and warmth. Winter storms have arrived in force this year, slamming the US Midwest, breaking the back of Minnesota’s Metrodome, and bringing early joy to New England’s ski areas. By now we’re quite acclimated to winter driving in North America, but this early winter has found Europe encased in snow and ice last seen in watching The Day After Tomorrow. Along with much of northern Europe, the UK and Ireland found themselves pounded by early December snowstorms this winter, closing major highways throughout the country, isolating many villages, schools and farms. Land Rover even made some vehicles available to authorities to help with the chaos. Correspondents Andrew Taylor from Scotland and Tony Luckwill from Ireland share their winter experiences that follow: 28 Rovers magazine

Battling the snowfalls this winter forced the resignation of Scotland’s Minister of Transportation in December; it’s been that kind of winter. My life has changed, too, from the comfort and solidity of my expedition-kit Defender 130, to life with a no frills Land Rover 90—that means lots of Series Land Rover parts such as sliding windows, separate door tops and flat vinyl seats. Usually the Defender is only on duty on the weekend when it hauls building rubbish from the current home renovations or collecting coal and logs, but at the end of November, Aberdeenshire, the remote area I now call home, was covered with snow and lots of it. This is where the Defender comes in to its own; the low power of the basic diesel engine means little in these conditions and it just plugs through the snow at a steady pace. The biggest problem is the other traffic trying to make through the white wasteland. Unfortunately, they are less sure of their vehicles and bring the flow of traffic down to no more than a 20 mph crawl; for a change it's not me and my Defender holding up the traffic! Normally my 25 mile daily commute does not demand low range or diff locks, just steady and thoughtful driving. As the storm progressed, the accumulation of snow increased and I found that a trip to my mother's house was called for as they had been stranded up a farm track for three days with no means of escape. This is the first time that the Land Rover’s full box of tricks was required. Low ratio, differential lock and steady driving assured progress through three feet of snow on a steep inclined track. The neighbours looked at the Defender with envy as they try to clear their driveways. I simply drove by with a nod of recognition. The next time that the Defender would need to use its full capabilities was a real boon. The road to our home had gradually become narrower as the week progressed. As a result, there was only enough room for two cars to pass. The problem arose when a snow plough came from the other direction. Unfortunately some plough drivers take the "I'll do more damage than you can" mentality. Unfortunately we met one such driver. As a result, we were forced through a four-foot snowbank at the side of the road. Naturally the plough never stopped.


First gear high ratio selected—nothing. Second gear—still nothing. Low ratio first—still no joy, low ratio second— not that either. Next step, diff lock, forward—no joy. What about reverse? Success, as the Land Rover headed backwards through the bank and back onto the road! All this happened within a minute, but the anguish made it seem like an hour. Two weeks on and with still more snow falling, our purchase of a 25-year-old military Land Rover (with a Sankey trailer), and driving it 500 miles home at 55 mph, does not seem like one of my worst ideas.

My new Discovery 4 XS Commercial arrived in the first week of November 2009. At the time I was living in the UK where winter came early and it snowed from the week before Christmas right through until late March. With the “snow” setting on the standard Terrain Response system the vehicle coped remarkably well, although I still only used the car when absolutely necessary. It was several miles to the nearest supermarket then, but now back in Ireland I can walk to the good shops and don’t have to drive as much in this latest snowy weather, which has come the earliest time in the year on record. Being a UK XS spec model with the older 2.7 TDV6 engine, my Discovery 4 comes with climate control and a heated windscreen as standard, alongside front fog lamps and rear park distance control. It is therefore not difficult to clear the windows quickly once you have got the bulk of the snow cleared off, and the condensation disappears rapidly and stays clear for your journey. It makes me wonder why such items are not mandatory on vehicles destined for Northern and Western parts of Europe.

The latest version of the NAVTEQ based “Premium” hard drive navigation system makes finding your way around very easy, especially when negotiating unfamiliar city streets. Built-in Bluetooth works fine with my iPhone 4 (there were issues with earlier iPhones). The dashboard mounted screen with its multifunctional display is easy to set up and easy to read. I could effortlessly change my display settings from MPH to KPH (for the constant speed readout) and from MPG to L/100km for the fuel efficiency figures. The average economy I have been achieving is around about 39 MPG, although this can rise to as much as about 44 MPG and as little as 28 MPG, depending on the roads being driven. It is possible to get around 1000 km out of a full tank in the summertime. Having owned most of the previous Discovery types during the last few years (and having driven virtually every different model available in the British Isles in between) I admit to being a hardened Discovery enthusiast. I firmly believe that the Discovery is already a classic vehicle in its own right. I hope that Land Rover keep it going (but it does need a price reduction as it is overpriced). I was lucky as I managed to get mine as a high specification Commercial van. This mattered because I knew I was returning to Ireland where the current coalition government partners introduced a hefty road tax that could have run to €2,100. In addition, I did not have to pay the Vehicle Registration Tax of around €26,000, or the 21% Ireland VAT rate. Perhaps these tax rates help explain why there are only two Discoverys in the car park of the apartment block where I am currently living. They do seem to be the only vehicles which can be started up and driven out of the complex without major problems. The Irish road tax system, as it currently stands, forces most people to drive superminis across the country in all weathers, instead of safe, capable vehicles like Land Rovers. Still, being on my own I don’t need the extra seats at present and the extra loadspace comes in handy. My vehicle might be the only one in Ireland with its exact specification: manual gearbox, 2.7 engine and satnav. It appears that all Discovery 4’s come as automatics only with the newer 3.0 litre twin turbo SDV6 diesels. As far as I know Land Rover has yet to supply the 3.0 litre engine with a manual gearbox. This winter’s storms might cripple lesser vehicles at times, but my Discovery 4 seems to beg me to get out and tackle the snows. Once it has conquered the winter, my Discovery 4 will help me explore several parts of Ireland that I’ve not visited in many years. With weather predictions calling for 0 degrees Celsius weather and more snow, this will be an exciting season. ///

Conversations turn to smores and hot cider, the campfire gets bigger, temps continue to drop and the snow piles up. Throw another log on the fire; this is the perfect time to begin our discussion about whether to run snow chains. All snow might look alike but snow comes in many forms: wet and slushy, dry and powdery, deep, shallow, crystalline, large flakes, small pop-corn and all in between. Don’t let folks fool you into thinking there is only one way to drive in snow (actually there is—carefully—but that is a given). Spring snow, afternoon snow, early season powder and all the other types of white stuff require different mindsets. Think “situational awareness.” Early one morning you head into the woods, crossing a few trickles of frozen creeks, experiencing no problems. Later that day, the sun’s warmth has made the snow slushy, the trickle a deep run off of crumbled ice, and made the riverbanks muddy. Pay attention to the conditions and how they change throughout the day. Don’t be lulled by your Rover’s 4WD, either. It does give better traction on slippery surfaces, but it can’t stop better than any other car. Use care with your brakes because the weight of our Rovers can break traction easily and get out of control. Trust the ABS [on newer models] and watch your following distance. Those readers with the newer Rovers using the Terrain Response Systems—trust them, but know how they

work in different modes and in the different slippery conditions. Chains will improve traction in snow and ice but, since chains will cause digging, they are my last resort. Depending on the terrain you may also prefer to airdown for additional flotation. When all else fails, if barerubber just isn’t cutting it, chains come into play, but be careful for this is serious play. Remember that when using chains on dry pavement braking distance will increase over bare rubber; bare rubber offers the shortest stopping distance, followed by studs and then chains. However, on snow and ice chains and studs can stop much quicker and can give more control provided you install them on all

four tires; things can get a bit squirrelly if you only have them on the front or back. Some states require you to carry chains during the winter season. Know your state law and chain up before you find yourself in a drift.

Choosing a chain type and class Land Rovers will use two types of chain configuration: ladder style and diamond style. Both work well, but I find the diamond pattern allows for

better lateral control and with the differing angles they offer more aggressive traction. Lately, increasingly tight wheel wells have forced chain companies to get creative and invent variations of the two styles.


Alternatives to the basic ladder and diamond pattern to consider include: Link chains – Another form of snow chains. Traction cables – Formed from cable wire instead of chain links. Cable chains – Another name for traction cables. Snow cables – Another name for traction cables Spider shaped – Chains mounted onto the tires from the side Sock – Fabric rather than chain or cable There are three classes of chains for use with Land Rovers: 1. SAE Class S - Regular (non-reinforced) passenger tire traction devices for vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. 2. SAE Class U - Regular (non-reinforced) and lug-reinforced passenger tire traction devices for vehicles with regular (non-restricted) wheel well clearances. 3. SAE Class W - Passenger tire traction devices that use light truck components, as well as some light truck traction devices. It is possible to have an S class rating with W class strength – like the chains I run on my Rovers. I run the RUD Grip 4x4 diamond style chains. They’re strong and fit tight. The clearances for the 3 common classes: first number is the minimum tread face clearance (tread to vehicle), the second number is the sidewall clearance: Class S Class U Class W

Chains expand when rolling. Be careful to choose a chain set that will not contact your vehicle as this can cause serious vehicle damage. While it is especially an issue with independent front suspension vehicles, the LR2/3/4 and new Range Rovers can also experience damage issues. Even if you have solid axles, take care every time you fit chains to ensure the chains will not contact the vehicle.

Heavier more aggressive chains are not always better! On my old Ser II 88” I used the “v-bar” reinforced ladder chains which were sometimes too aggressive. Rather than slipping, they would catch tree stumps and roots, which resulted in blowing a locking hub. Remember you’ll prefer a slipping tire to a damaged drive train. Price and quality do matter when choosing chains. The most expensive thing you can do is have a cheap chain break and damage your vehicle. Cheap chains (poorly made with cheap materials) will eventually break causing havoc with body parts and drive-train components. Every style of chain will have cheap, good, better, and best construction—with associated price-tag options. “Cheap” chains often use twisted links that lack the strength of the square alloy links (square links are actually oval shaped but the wire the chain is made of is “square”). Ladder chains, which can be well made, tend to be slightly less expensive than the diamond style chains. Installing chains Bungee cords come with ladder style chains that don’t have built-in tensioners made to keep the slack from hitting fenders and other components. Bungees work well for chains that fit tightly, but don’t use them to take up excessive slack on a chain that is just too big for the tire. Before starting installation, sort the chains out. Chains get twisted up in the bag and in handling them. Untangle them, get the ends straight and mostly “square”—twisted chains will be shorter and harder to install. The drive on method is the most common way to install a ladder chain. First lay out the chains in front of all the tires. Keep the tensioners and adjustment links on the outside of the wheel and make certain the sharp end of the cross chain connector link will not rub the tire. It can help to place a block of wood inside one of the “ladders” which will get the tire up off the ground making installation easier. The block of wood helps get the chain

tighter the first time on and minimizes secondary tightening down the road. Either way, make sure that all chains are “facing” the correct direction. Once the chains are laid out, drive onto them. Stop so the longer end can be passed over the tire, positioning the ends close to the “8” or “4” o’clock position. Connect the inside side links first making sure they are tight then connect the outside side links and tension. If there are any loose links secure them with tie-wraps. Once all four (or two) chains are on, move the vehicle forward a full tire rotation and re-adjust to make them tighter. Practice this installation as it does take patience and skill to get it right. My most important rule of chain installation is to re-tighten them after a few tire rotations. Diamond Pattern chains can be installed even when stuck. Make sure when installing them on hard surface to move the vehicle a bit and re-tighten them. If on soft stuff you can “saw” the chain at ground level to cut under the tire, which will help with a tighter installation the first time. I like chains on all tires, but it is worth noting that some manufacturers have issues with chains on some vehicles. Read the vehicle owners manual and think about where, what and how you will be operating and using chains. Most chains that meet S class tolerances work better with our vehicles than other larger size link chain. A quality set of chains should last a long time; just make sure you don’t exceed 30 mph, minimize spinning, have correct fitment, keep them tight, minimize dry road use and avoid skidding them. I have had years of good service from the alloy-square link S class heavy duty diamond chains I use, even in very technical terrain. Read the instructions and trial fit them in the shop or clean, dry driveway before you get stuck in the big snow. Stay warm and safe out there. Calef Letorney,Westford,VT, represented Rovers North at the National Rally and returned full of excitement and stories, but it was the participants who really made the event special for him – ed. On October 18th Taylor Congleton and I departed Vermont to attend the Solihull Society's 2010 National Land Rover Rally in Moab, Utah. Thanks to Eric Dalton, we had a Defender 110 to borrow for the week. We flew into Montrose, Colorado and after a quick shuttle ride up to Telluride to retrieve our loaner vehicle we were on our way to Moab. There were 157 vehicles and 277 people registered for this year’s event. From early Series trucks to the newest Range Rover, almost every Land Rover model was in attendance and represented on the trails. I found the black Range Rover Sport dominating on the trails especially impressive. Attempting Moab’s off-road challenges in one of the other “luxury sport touring SUVs” like the BMW, Lexus or Porsche would undoubtedly prove an extremely expensive and unsuccessful endeavor. I find it remarkable that in the continual march towards on-road performance, luxury and creature comforts, Land Rover continues to produce vehicles with legendary off-road prowess. Most Rally reports share the same themes: The off-roading was fun, the camaraderie felt amazing and the event organizers and volunteers did a great job. Bill Lang Bill: My name is Bill Lang and I live in Roblin, Manitoba Canada. I have a 1985 ex-military 110 with 10 inches out the center [of the chassis] to go to a 100 inch wheel base and 13 inches off the rear [of the body] to make it a better departure angle. It’s got a 300 tdi with an R380 box. On suspension, I’ve got little suspension upgrades. I’m not stock. And it’s been good. The engine came out of England as a brand-new factory rebuild. Good one! Calef: So why did you decide to cut it down? BL: Just to be different. That’s all. That is what us Land Rover folks are all about. There’s not two of us the same. We all like to have our own individual vehicles. Right? We’re just a little bit different. We’re a strange breed of people! We are Land Rover people! You have to be strange to drive one of these vehicles.You know, Canadian people and Americans don’t have time for this stuff. We are a unique bunch of people. We really are, and the camaraderie with Land Rover people is just fantastic. It really is!

CL: Is there any special event or trip that you have done? BL: I was down in New Zealand in April/May of this year and did some off-roading down there and my intent now is to take this baby down there next year, for a couple of months or a month or whatever, providing I can ship it reasonably cheap. But Moab is number 1! You can’t beat Moab. We do competitions in Oregon, Seattle, British Columbia and Vancouver. But there is nothing, nothing to beat coming to Moab. And we have had a great time here, just a great time. CL: So what was your favorite trail? BL: Flat Iron Mesa was the most enjoyable trail. It is scary, scary, scary. Easter Egg Hill! So I traded that 58’ Bel Air, it had less rust than this, I traded it straight across. I drove it around the parking lot down here at the truck stop, come back and it wouldn’t run. I had to hit the steering wheel, ended up being the potentiometer. That’s about it. I just love it! I spend all the time out in the desert with it.

ML: Yep, nice silver one. Riiiides like a Cadillac.

CL: So you do some wheeling out here in the desert?

CL: Why Land Rover?

ML: Oh yeah.Yeah, yeah all my life I have spent in the desert. I ran a bulldozer all my life. I built most of these roads, or a lot of these roads around here. Now I just go out in the desert by myself. ///

Calef: Michael, what vehicle do you own? Michael: 1990 Range Rover

ML: Well because I saw that movie Hatari back in the ‘60s with John Wayne, and they had a seat on the front of it and they were lassoing rhino off of it. I have always wanted one but I was too busy working to buy one. I drove Fords and Chevys and work trucks and this one come up. I had a ’58 Chevy Bel Air that I found out in the desert here, brought it in, redid the engine, tilt steering wheel and all that. But I broke my back and I

Let the Frightful Weather Begin The Old Farmer’s Almanac, published in Dublin, NH, predicts that the winter of 2011, “will be milder than normal across the north but colder across the south... Precipitation will be below normal, with near to below normal snowfall. The snowiest periods will be in late December, mid and late January, mid to late February, and early March.” The Farmer’s Almanac, published in Lewiston, ME, predicts that, “Old Man Winter will exhibit a ‘split personality.’ The eastern third of the country, (New England down to Florida and as far west as the lower Ohio River and Mississippi River Valley), will experience colder-thannormal winter temperatures. Across New England winter will feature much colder-than-normal temperatures. 46 Rovers magazine

Meanwhile, for the Western States, milder-than-normal winter temperatures are expected. They will spread from the Pacific Coast inland as far as the Rockies and the western Great Plains. Across the nation’s midsection, near-normal winter temperatures are anticipated.” As for precipitation, we’re likely to see more rain and snow, particularly in the south, the northern and central plains, and then along the Atlantic coast. Winter driving often brings out the worst in drivers; even in New England, the first touch of snow means that tow truck operators and body shop owners find themselves in high demand. Drivers suffer from a collective amnesia about the physics of driving on ice and snow, particularly in the realm of braking. Land Rover

Snow might stop your car cold because of its depth or consistency, but it doesn’t attack undercarriage pieces like mud and water. Eight engine pistons crash and jostle against each other under the hood of my truck as I nose it up a steep section of trail somewhere in New Hampshire. In its age, my Range Rover has lost the restrained purr it had when it first rolled off the assembly line, along with any pretense of its English civility. Instead, its engine now knocks and shudders, producing a deep, burbling growl from the exhaust. When I really get on the gas, the truck roars furiously back at me and redoubles its efforts to burrow its knobby tires into the hill under us, eager to get us to the top. Only out here, away from towering office buildings and other indicators of man, does my vehicle become a beast of burden. It's absorbed all the blood, sweat, and scraped knuckle skin I've lost working on it and become something wholly more organic and sentient. The further we get away from paved roads and sidewalks, the more

its boxy profile comes to resemble a great bristling beast loyal only to me. The Azerbaijan, so named for a country whose lands I'll likely never see, will go to any lengths to deliver me into or drag me out of the very heart of nature itself. It's telling of my perception of nature that I've convinced myself I need to own and maintain such a vehicle. It's really more of a delusion. After all, the nature that I've come to know doesn't resemble other people's. It's not some beachside boardwalk near an endangered bird's sanctuary. Nor a splintering picnic table with crude swastikas and initials carved into it accompanied by a rusted out barbecue pit. It most definitely isn't the easily tread trail I now find myself on. You don't need a truck with a thermostat configured for the hundred-plus degree heat of sub-Saharan Africa to get to these places. No, my nature is less easily accessed. It's more obscure and dangerous. It's nameless and terribly huge, exotic and well hidden. No map of it exists and it's doubtful any cartographer will ever get to draw one up.

Glimpses of it can be be caught in nightly news reports from Kabul and Peshawar, or in the background of American SUV commercials. Its natives speak a dialect unknown to even the most educated linguists. Communication is slow moving and often altogether stifled by its

densely forested interior and unforgiving deserts. My nature is the very essence of wilderness itself, terrible in power and unafraid to blot humanity out in typhoon waves, hurricanes, and mudslides. And while I can describe this place to you in great detail, much like Azerbaijan, I've never set foot within its savage confines or seen its mountainous terrain with my own eyes. I first learned of my nature's origins when I was nine or ten. The Great Illustrated Classics treatment of White Fang served as my introduction to it. Within its pages were descriptions of the Northland Wilds, a snowy, icegripped place far beyond the chain link encircled yard that served as the center of my known world. And it was inhabited by people and animals whose lives were subject to being snuffed out by no shortage of terrible ends: wolf predation, gunfire, and frigid temperatures to name only a few. I vaguely remember reading the book and being distraught at the senseless deaths therein, "survival of the fittest" not yet ingrained into my mind. But as much as it frightened me, it got me excited at the prospect of a place where survival was not guaranteed and success was measured only in arbitrary terms like manliness, gut instinct, and caliber of gun. The trail I now find myself on doesn't resemble that place. This trail isn't a seldom used overland route through the Yukon, but a dirt road packed flat by logging trucks. Flattened cigarette butts and empty beer cans dot the ground. Every once in a while I see the charred remains of a recliner off amongst the trees, or a kicked in computer monitor wedged between two spray painted rocks. Even though the land my truck and I stalk through lies a hundred miles from from any notable city, I feel like I'm still covering ground well within the shadow of civilization. I guide the truck down some promising side trails, seeing if I can escape the depressing signs of hu-

manity. To my disappointment they all terminate in clearings littered with spent shotgun cartridges or wads of bright yellow Wendy's napkins. This logging trail does not lead to my nature. Defeated in my search, I turn the truck around towards the trail head and reflect on what brought me out here. Jack London had planted in my mind a seed that had sprouted into a devout fascination with impossible to reach wilds. It was further reinforced by Hemingway, “Indiana Jones� films, and a smattering of other influences that stressed adventure and mastery over some great unknown wilderness that probably exists only in fiction. Thirty dollars in gas, several hours of aimless driving, and the production of enough harmful emissions to bring the whole of the green movement's righteous fury down on my head hasn't brought me any closer to stifling jungles or bone bleaching deserts. I turn off the trail, back on to the paved roads of civilization. I can hear flecks of mud rapidly spattering the inside of my wheel wells as I pick up speed, and the previously furious sounding exhaust mellows into a low burble. The occupants of passing cars look at my Rover curiously, as though it were something completely alien to them. My spirits rise, pride slowly percolating in my mind. I pull into a quaint mom and pop gas station near Hollis and am greeted with a long, shrill whistle as I step down from the truck. "Sure is some Land Rover right there, man." I wheel around to find a bespectacled young man with a large beard and a shaved head admiring my truck. "I love these trucks, man. They use'em all over the world." He studies the truck for a long moment with genuine admiration and finally concludes: "This thing should be in a museum." He shakes my hand and heads into the mini mart. I turn back to the Azerbaijan. Every inch of it is spattered in mud. A dirty yellow tow rope dangles from the bull bar. I notice all the dings and chips in the paint job, the way its body sags a little near the right rear spring, and the wrong sized window wipers I've been using out of laziness. But slowly the imperfections fade from view and I see what the man saw: a rugged machine built to thrive in the face of conditions and stresses that neither of us will likely ever experience in our lifetimes. Just that principle alone commands a deep, primal respect from the most testosterone tinged parts of my psyche. But Azerbaijan or not, I know I'll never reach my nature. The roots of its very existence are too intertwined with the nebulous dreamings of a child to be real, never mind accessible via 4x4 trail. Still, I keep alive through my aimless expeditions a tenuous conduit to that juvenile perception of the world. And even at the risk of never truly finding the absolute wilderness that London first opened my eyes to, there will always be a part of me that strives to seek it out. /// Rovers magazine

Sightings With the arrival of early winter weather, the Sightings poured into Sightings Central. Changes in our media landscape have forced the Sightings editor to recruit younger, media savvy talent to help track the many internet sightings. For this issue we thank 13-year-old Anna Tolette, Cos Cob, CT, for her invaluable assistance. As always it’s helpful for rookies–and useful as a reminder for the grizzled veterans as well–to review the rules for Sightings. Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won’t surprise us, either–thus we can’t award you a mug. We’re delighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn’t be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways to get a coffee mug. Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication, we must close off the Sightings. Limited space means that if we’ve mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we might not mention it again. So if you’re new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Rule #4 – We can’t kit-out your kitchen–if you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5 - Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits. Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read your handwriting with your name and address we can’t recognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst...E-mail submissions–remember we can’t send a mug by e-mail. Catalogue companies flock to Land Rovers to spruce up sales during the critical holiday season and this year was no exception. Orvis continued its reliance on Land Rovers to pump up visual appeal in their latest campaigns. Their online store graphics featured a ’66 Series II-A bounding through the snow, reports Frances Ferguson, Pottstown, PA. Chris Vitale, Medham, NJ, spotted a Defender 90 in an Orvis email advertisement. Andy Draxler, Heath, MA, noted that the Orvis Gifts for Men catalogue featured the Lanny Clark restored Series II 109; Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI, Matthew Gross, Stewartstown, PA and Visti Kjar, Calgary, Alberta, also saw the same Sighting. Whitney Hall, Jeffersonville, VT, forwarded a Baby Gap ad with a safari setting and, of course, a Defender 90. Beretta guns added an online component to their catalogue offerings, including the rear of a Defender 90 SW, reports Josh Williams, Manchester, VT. Mark Ziegler, Chandler, AZ, spotted a Land Rover used twice in the latest Eddie Bauer catalogue. Reef Coastal Cruiser shoes has an ad featuring a Defender 90 as the prominent background image; Samuel Yung and Tim Yu, both of San Jose, CA, spotted the ad in Surfer Magazine.

Movie producers know how a Land Rover can spice up an otherwise forgettable film. Chris Vitale, Mendham, NJ, reports that sadly, a Defender 110 double cab is not only driven by “the bad guys” in The Expendables, but blown up, also. The Garth Brooks movie, Unanswered Prayers, featured a

Series II-A in one scene, noted Mike Parsley [see Rule #6]. Geena Ciaramella, Revere, MA, spotted the stretch Range Rover Classic reported earlier in the movie Striptease. Donald Glover, Bothell, WA, cried “Woohoo!” when he saw a Land Rover “flying through the streets” with a left tire missing in the television show Chase. The latest is the “human energy” campaign showing Land Rovers at work in Africa. Ivan Heredia, Rialto, CA, Frank Potter, Creedmoor, NC, Dick Newton, Charlestown, RI and Rob Modica, Tucson, AZ, spotted the television ads. Jonathan Speed March, Roanoke, VA, noted that when MSN wanted to highlight male fashion mistakes, they chose the singer Lenny Kravitz in an improbable outfit standing in front of a new Range Rover. The Eureka (CA) Times Standard ran an article on rescue efforts in Indonesia, and sure enough, there’s a Series Land Rover pickup performing its duty. Richard Brown, Eureka, CA, spotted the article and photo. Stephen Johnson, John’s Island, SC, noted that a photo spread in Sporting Classics for fine British/Irish hunting clothing included an advertising shot of a Defender 90 pickup with an Ivor Williams cap. Seth Mukai, Golden, CO, saw a similar photo on Filson’s hunting clothing website. Tim Fletcher, Lakeville, MA, spotted the misindentified Defender in Coastal Living magazine.
