Letters to theEditor

Dear Rovers North, I own a ’92 Range Rover County with over 320,000 Rovers North miles on the clock. My wife is getting a complex about her entries to the Sightings contest. She won one without her address so it was not shipped. She has sent in several that were not “winners.” In the recent issue there is a name in the winner’s column that is very similar to hers, in the same town. Is she the winner of a mug? While we enjoy tormenting her that she cannot seem to win a mug, I think it would make life easier for all of us if she won one. Can you check on this please? Allen Minner Carnation, WA [We hope that the mug arrived in time to assure marital bliss. –ed] Dear Rovers North, I bought my first Land Rover in about 1965. It was a 109” pickup truck that had been used in the building of the Oroville Dam in northern California. It was worn, but in good condition. I had a long cab installed, painted it red with a white top and used it for my family car for about eight years, rebuilding almost every major component along the way. The engine never died, but I was especially hard on axles. In 1973, I bought my present Land Rover 109” station wagon, a 6-cylinder NADA, in nearly new condition. I have been driving it ever since, though now it needs paint and some other cosmetic work. The only regret I have is that when I sold the first Rover, I also gave the new owner my old shop manual because I knew a new one was available and I needed all the information on my new engine and other improvements. Of course that was necessary, but the difference was the old manual had all the specs and repair information for the fire equipment that Rover once had as optional items. I loved that old manual! Mike Lee San Carlos, CA [We loved the photo of your 109” fire tender, especially the fire bell mounted on the front bumper! Keep up the daily driving in your 109” SW. –ed] Dear Rovers North, I work at the U.S. Embassy in Tirana, Albania, and saw this “Strange Rover” the other day in Tirana, and thought you might enjoy it. Thanks – always appreciate the good service when I need stuff for my ’98 Discovery I. Michael Gray Dulles, VA [A Range Rover Classic, customized to become a double-cab pickup, is an unusual sight indeed. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm with Rovers North. – ed]

Dear Rovers North, This past July my family and I spent a couple of weeks in the Mojave with our Rovers. We drove from Rhode Island to San Diego via the Badlands in South Dakota, to Moab and the Mojave. We happily used some parts from you guys and a whole lot of advice. We also have some good pics of our Landies if you’d like them for The Rovers North News. We now live in Japan and eagerly await the next issue as it’s our only connection to our beloved Rovers, now in storage. Samuel May Sasebo, Japan [Sam, we’d love to share the story and photos of your travels in your Land Rovers. You’ll see a few RHD Rovers in Japan, so send us photos, too. –ed]

Hi Rovers North, I just wanted to send you a note to say thank you very much for the coveted mug(s). They are really cool additions to my collection – a very nice touch! I hope you are enjoying your summer! We’re beginning to enjoy ours here as the weather becomes more like summer and we can take our classic ’67 109” out for a drive on Duxbury Beach. Now that’s a lot of fun! You wouldn’t believe the smiles, waves, salutes and comments like “Cool truck, man!” that we get as we drive by and park with the other SUV’s, set up our beach chairs, and enjoy some sun and sea. Jim Dargan Plymouth, MA [Beach running in a 109” – sounds like an endless summer to us! – ed] Dear Rovers North, Just wanted to say thanks for all the sponsorship and support Rovers North exhibits at the National Rally. Vendors like you (and others) help make the Rally the great event it is. We had a wonderful time; the Solihull Society bunch knows how to throw a good party. I thought we had a long trip but there was no comparison to yours! Anyway, I love your products (I have several on my Disco), and I love the black hats as well. Mickey Neal St. Louis, MO [No matter how long the drive, it’s worth it when there’s a group of Land Rover enthusiasts waiting at the other end! Thanks for the kind words, and keep up the good work with your Discovery. –ed] Dear Rovers North, Hey, Jeff Aronson. I ran across the website of the folks [East Coast Rover] who “restored” your QE I (wow, what a mess!) Well… why didn’t they redo that one rusty, tin trim strip on the driver’s door? I have sensory issues and that bugs me every time I see a photo of your great Rover. Great stuff – keep it coming! Steve Stricker Oxford, MS [The Spring 2005 issue of the Rovers North News carried the article on the seven day “Roverhaul” of the QE I by East Coast Rover and Rovers North, for which I remain grateful. Galvanizing trim strips cannot be accomplished as part of a seven day challenge; happily, they left the gentle work dents alone, too. Mine is a working Rover so cosmetics are secondary. Most importantly, I know it will last for several more decades –ed.] Dear Rovers North, Thanks for taking the time to put an awesome Land Rover magazine into circulation! I look forward to every issue. Erik Tomo Hamburg, NY Thank you for what you do! Mike Frede Pembroke Pines, FL Keep up the great work, Rovers North! John Rain, Jr Pawcatuck, CT [Thanks Erik, Mike, and John, for keeping up your Land Rovers. –ed] P

CORNER

[Bill Burke, Frutia, CO, is one of North America’s foremost off-road instructors through his Four-Wheeling America program. Here he shares his experience and knowledge on equipping yourself for trail breakdowns. –ed] Contact Bill Burke at 970-858-3468 or visit www.bb4wa.com In my travels I have to beg and borrow shop floor space. Recently, as I lay on the floor of Columbia Rovers in Portland, OR, packing my front wheel bearings, the shop manager Brent offered me the use of a lift. Huh?? I’ve been a shade tree and big-truck mechanic for so long I wouldn’t know how to use a lift. Brent suggested I throw some dirt on the floor to make it feel like home. As I lay on the floor, listening to the dealership’s elevator music and humming Led Zeppelin, Brent and I began discussing how Rovers have progressed to the point that a lot of people are now carrying a laptop loaded with AutoLogic to help diagnose trailside fault codes. What if you do break down on the trail and the fault code shows the problem is the accelerator? The computer will diagnose the electrical sub-system (which has many parts) but the mechanical sub-system might also be at fault, or it could be both. In addition to the vacuum pump assembly, the SLABS ECU system or just one of the many switches in the system could be at fault. Do we carry the parts – not likely! So is it worth carrying a computer? Whether you carry a laptop, we can all agree: When a truck breaks down on the trail, it is crucial to have the tools, spare parts, know-how and problem solving skills to get the truck running. Creativity is especially important on the trail. The last time I was on the Dusy-Ershim trail [Squaw Valley area in California –ed], a fuel pump quit on one of the trucks. When it died we were 20 miles and two days away from civilization in ether direction. Needless to say we did not have a spare fuel pump. Instead we took stock of the parts we had and put our heads together for some creative thinking. 10

We ended up drilling the gas cap, threading an airline fitting into it and pressuring the fuel tank with a CO2 tank regulated to 45 psi. Yeah, the field fix was cool, but just as easy would have been to wire in a small electric fuel pump in line in front of the fuel filter and make that. And not many people carry a ‘parts store’ fuel pump as a spare So what do I carry in the form of tools and spares? Some folks think the best tool is a Ham radio or cell phone. Others indeed think the laptop and AutoLogic system is the way to go. Honestly, electronics fail, batteries run out of juice and just diagnosing the problem is only half the issue. A well-maintained vehicle is the best tool in the inventory. It is always best to ensure that the parts you use are equal to or better than original equipment, come from a reputable source like Rovers North and are installed by a caring individual – you, your buddy or a qualified mechanic. Keep the Rover running well and it will take care of you. But even the best maintained vehicles have been known to break down on the trail, so it is important to always have tools on board whenever venturing off the beaten path. My favorite tool is the shop manual. I have a copy of the manual in a large Zip Lock bag stowed in the back of my Rover. I consult it regularly to make sure of torque specs and proper assembly sequence. You may not know how to fix the problem, but a shop manual will help an experienced trail buddy sort your problem out. I suggest going to a pawn shop or used tool store to pick up tools that will be banging around in the back of your rig. I also use a plastic tackle box that is somewhat waterproof when

closed. I have found that the metal ones rust and make a lot of housing. Speaking of the Land Rover jack, it is the best off-road noise. I also use tool rolls and bank money deposit bags to jack available. Since the Hi-Lift Jack company does not like us hold the sockets, wrenches and miscellaneous tools in the box. using their jack for changing a flat tire, the safest bet is to use My trail tool kit has extracted me from many tight spots so the OE jack that comes with the Rover. See you on the trail. The red Land Rover jack handle will usually fit over the magnetic tool I use for getting the axle shafts out. Just rememP ber to tape the tool to the handle so it doesn’t stick inside the 11

In the 19 years of the British Invasion, Vermont’s premier British car event, Land Rovers have generally played the role of the “country cousin” in the family. The 500 vehicles and thousands of people who attend the September event celebrate British marques and models no longer in production – MG, Triumph, Austin Healey, Sunbeam - or rarely seen - Lotus, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce. Look in the back rows, that’s where you find the green oval. Land Rovers get relegated to the status of clowns (the Rover Polo games in the early ‘90s), barbaric brutes (carrying a cheating Mini-Moke into the woods during a tug-of-war), pack horses (Rovers North’s hilly trail rides), or mud wrestling entertainment (Rovers North trials course). Regardless, a cheery group of Land Rover enthusiasts drive up every year to entertain the Jaguar XK-E and MG T-series owners. Beer mugs replace champagne flutes and Rovers North t-shirts outnumber British Invasion regalia in Classes 48 (Series I – III), 49 (Defenders) and 50 (Range Rover/Discovery). In past years, Land Rover enthusiasts have stuffed the “People’s Choice” ballot boxes to ensure that the rattiest Land Rover receives a prize from the disgruntled organizers. This year, Derek Chace, Underhill, VT, and his Series III lightweight made a spectacular splash as he kitted out his car SAS style, complete with cammo net, British cammo outfits and gun emplacement. Ted Woodward, Falmouth, ME, (Series II-A) and Kevin Murphy (Series III), Ridgefield, CT, took home the other “People’s Choice” plaques. Some very handsome Range Rover Classics, P 38-A’s and a pop-riveted Discovery showed neophytes the wide range of Land Rover enthusiasm. Most strikingly, David Pound, Stowe, VT, and his cover-girl Series II soft top (featured in the Fall ‘09 issue of The Rovers North News) won a prize in the Concours class, a first for Land Rovers at this event. Amidst all the glittering restorations of great British cars entered into the competition, David’s entry – driven daily – brought honor and recognition to Land Rovers. Who knows? Land Rover owners might finally be treated like royalty at next year’s event. P

BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL By Jeffrey B. Aronson

Every fall in Peanuts Lucy Van Pelt entices Charlie Brown to kick the football she’s holding for him. For decades the end result has been the same – Charlie Brown kicks at the ball just as she yanks it away. I know the feeling. You’d think that after last year’s humiliation I’d have learned a lesson. I still stare at the cover of the Rovers North News, the QE I with the headline, “They Chose Your Rover?” The faint taste of crow still lingers in my mouth as I remember the taunts of “nice photo of your windshield,” snark, snark. No, I learned nothing. When L. L. Bean asked again if my Rover could be used in the 2010 Outdoor Gear Catalogue (they suggested “You could always entitle the article, ‘They Chose Your Rover, Again?”), I demonstrated my shameless quest for meaningless recognition and meekly asked, “When?” It had been a year since the QE I’s last waxing; three months since its last wash. This was not going to be a quick job. Who knew that I had such a collection of carpentry tools, lawn mower fluids and parts, even a toilet tank float and stopper, packed away in the car? Out came a bunch of quarters for the local power wash [twice] and the Rovers North Waxoyl cleaning kit to remove the oxidized paint. Out came the shovel to remove the caked-on layer of bark and grass clippings from the rear. After the ferry ride to the mainland, out came more quarters to wash the car again, particularly the cockpit and rear tub mats. I enlisted the help of Rover mate Greg Black, Lincolnville, ME, to polish up the car. Naturally it promptly showered, which sent us both off for a beer. I put on a final coat of wax and readied myself for the photo shoot – a mere two days and 10 hours of toil. Next morning, I removed the soft top and made the two-hour drive to Bar Harbor. The L. L. Bean catalogue producers, photographers and professional models, largely the same personnel as last year, waited for me with some impatience. It seems that their chosen photo op locale was a sand bar exposed and available only during low tide. 20

Besides, fair weather clouds kept rolling in, covering up the sun and perfect light. L.L. Bean staffers showed their pleasure at seeing the QE I again; they seemed more subdued at my presence. A brisk wind off the water chilled the sand bar and its occupants. This year’s trained dog, named Gunner, strutted his stuff and gamboled in the harbor with pleasure as the models forced their smiles in the cold water. In between their shots, the models retreated to the warm, well-stocked RV parked on the waterfront. My assignment, should I wish to accept it - stand by the Rover and wait for the art director to come up with her next creative inspiration. I’m good at standing and waiting. I chatted with a lot of spectators, listened to a mix of appreciation and nonsense about Land Rovers, drove the car around the sand bar and watched the production crew at work. The QE I figured prominently in campsite shots, clearly implying it brought the L. L. Bean tents, coolers, blankets, kayaks and their owners to this stunning shoreline. On the other hand, I thought it looked good last year, too. I’ll have to wait until late next spring to find out whether it winds up in the Outdoor Gear catalogue. I’ll be on tenterhooks all winter. After a late lunch, I reassembled the soft top hoop set as I thought about the work the QE I accomplished this year. What a treat that a vehicle that could serve as a groundskeeper’s work truck, could also look so special, especially to the one model who gave me a big hug and thanked me for bringing it. Maybe that’s why Charlie Brown returns every fall to kick the football? These are the times that try men’s souls, or at least mine. The 43-year old QE I had worked like a draft horse all summer, hauling around workers and our caretaking gear as well as a trailer full of heavy groundskeeping equipment. Other than oil change and an ignition tune up, I paid scant attention to its numerous groans and clanks as I worked seven days a week. Robin Winks once wrote about an old car in whose trunk he kept a snow shovel. He listened to the incessant clanging and felt reassured by the presence of the shovel. Then the gas tank fell off and the clanging ceased. I thought of this when I backed the Rover and its trailer over a ledge on my front yard. A horrible “graunch” filled the air as the car stopped moving. It would go forward in four wheel drive, so I assumed the best and removed the right rear axle. Its perfect splines gleamed in the late evening light, so I removed the left rear axle. It, too, looked perfect. Uh, oh. When I called Rovers North the next morning, Les Parker and Arthur Patsouris correctly diagnosed the broken spider gears in the rear differential. Long ago I had learned the lesson of Rover owners who live in remote locations – never say “no” to an offer of parts. Years ago, a parts cache given to me had included a differential. I packed it in grease, covered it with an old shower curtain, stuffed it into a large tin, and hid it under the front porch. It sure came in handy

that morning when I removed the old differential to discover the broken spider gear carrier. So, too, did the differential/axle gasket kit that Rovers North put together for me a while back. Two hours later, the “new” differential was installed and the QE I disembarked for more work. My good feelings lasted about two weeks. As the QE I backed a boat trailer down a ramp into our harbor, I felt resistance going backwards. I got out and checked for a rock behind a wheel when I discovered the left front wheel had moved several inches forward against the bumper. Indeed the front axle pivoted side to side as the left side swung freely. I inched forward to get the trailer and its boat off the ramp and out of the way. I thought of strapping the axle to the crossmember to hold it in place, but realized that was too risky in village traffic. I sucked in my pride and headed for the local garage. My passion for British cars in general and Land Rovers in particular is not shared by many on this island. Arriving at the local shop, I felt like President Obama finding himself at a Glen Beck-Rush Limbaugh party. I could not have asked for a less sympathetic audience. Leaning on the back of a pickup was a collection of Anglophobes who grinned broadly as I described the grounding of the QE I. Several suggestions included simply pushing it back down the boat ramp, “Tide’s coming in, right?” to parading it around town on the back of the flatbed for emphasis. For solace, I called Rovers North and Mike Koch found me the right locating pin and U-bolts just in time for the daily UPS delivery. Using a bottle jack and some leverage, the mechanic and I wrestled the spring back in place. The QE I then returned to duty, hopefully without significant repairs this winter.

Once advertised as “The World’s Most Versatile Vehicle,” Land Rovers are equally versatile in their appeal to enthusiasts. A recent drive to the British Invasion in Stowe, VT, reminded me the range of Land Rover enthusiasm. For some, Land Rovers represent exploration of new places. Whether you’re packing up the family into your Discovery to travel to new states, or like correspondents Andrew and Karen Taylor of London, packing up the Defender 130 for round the world travel to new nations, your Land Rover can take you to all the places in your imagination. If you appreciate classic cars, the Series Land Rovers and Range Rover Classics provide perfect platforms for owner restorations. Parts availability is unsurpassed and as cars, they represent the finest of their era’s engineering. Brilliantly styled and designed, a restored Land Rover pleases everyone’s eyes. You might not want to commute anymore in your MG TD but you can happily take your Land Rover to work every day. Neither sleet, nor snow nor rain will stop it from meeting its appointed task. If you’re a tool person at heart, the inherent simplicity – as opposed to crudity – of the Land Rover makes it the perfect vehicle to bring out your inner mechanic. The Land Rover Series vehicles, Defenders, Range Rover Classics and Discoverys, all feature recognizable engine, suspension and braking systems that can be repaired with hand tools rather than software patches. If you like to test your off-road driving skills, you can take your stock Land Rover most anywhere and you can kit out a Land Rover to

tackle virtually any terrain. You’re limited only by your willingness to risk possible body damage; pick your route with care and you have little to worry about. The variations of Land Rovers, from people haulers to military weapons platforms, never fail to amaze onlookers. Land Rovers tend to be used for significant reasons, whether transporting medical workers to remote locations or transporting you to the corner market. Children get it and universally adore Land Rovers. Adults realize that a Land Rover can be as entertaining at 2 mph as it can be at 75 mph. Visually, there’s no anonymous Land Rover. Aurally, each engine has a unique and compelling sound. As examples of brilliant engineering and design, they have few peers in the automotive world. No wonder the range of enthusiasts is as wide as the range of Land Rovers.

As anyone actually working the automotive industry will attest, these are tough times in the car business. For a small, focused automobile manufacturer like Land Rover, these are especially perilous times. Unlike larger companies, Land Rover cannot afford a flop. US enthusiasts never took to the Freelander, but British and European buyers certainly did and its success helped keep Land Rover profitable at a critical time. In North America, we’d love to see Land Rover return the Defender to our market but our SRS (supplemental restraint system) requirements and unique diesel emission requirements mean that new Defenders won’t arrive in their current guise. Instead, Land Rover has announced both good news and bad news. The good news is that the Land Rover LRX, previously a concept car, will go into production for the 2011 model year. The relatively small SUV might well wear the Range Rover name when it arrives in the US and it promises interesting new technology. The bad news is tucked away in a corporate announcement. The UK AM website reported that “on the product front, new segment entries will build on Jaguar and Land Rover’s design, performance and technology. In addition, a new generation of lightweight saloons, sports cars and premium SUVs with hybrid and electric powertrains, will significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2. There will also be additional derivatives and powertrain variants from core model lines.” AM also noted that Jaguar Land Rover “aims for volume growth, especially in emerging markets... combined with low-cost country sourcing will also reduce variable cost.” This leads to the bad news, which is that within five years, Jaguar Land Rover will close one of its three historic factories – Solihull (Land Rover), Halewood and Castle Bromwich (Jaguar). With only 60% utilization of the combined plant capacity, it’s unlikely that all three will remain open. AM claims that Halewood will be the new home for the LRX. For Land Rover enthusiasts, Solihull remains the symbolic home of the marque; no trip to Jolly Olde feels complete without a pilgrimage to Solihull. No doubt Jaguar enthusiasts have the same attachment to Castle Bromwich.

Hot Time on the Trail Story & Photos by Jim Edson

Land Rover Bluff City, Memphis, TN, will be hosting a guided trail ride for all Land Rover owners. Whether you’ve never been off-road, or you are an experienced rock crawler, this is your chance to experience what your Land Rover is truly capable of – we have a trail for you. If you don’t want to take your Rover “off-road,” come ride with one of the trained staff from Bluff City, we will have room for you along in one of our vehicles. I had not been off-roading since SCARR last April (South Central Area Rover Rally in Texas –ed). So, right away I gave up my spot at the annual Texas Rovers trip to the Texas State Fair scheduled the same October weekend. With my ’04 Discovery II G4 running well, new tires on the Casita camper and my new camera I felt ready for this adventure. I had not been to the Superlift Off-Road Vehicle Park in Hot Springs, AR, in several years; all I could remember were some very rocky, long steep hills.

John & Lisa Monaghan

23

With great anticipation I got the camper out of storage, and two days later, my wife Vangie and I headed out on our 300 mile trip. We stopped in Texarkana, TX, to meet up with John Monaghan and his wife, Lisa. After a repair to John’s trailer lights, we ate real country food – chicken fried steak and meat loaf – at Texarkana’s famous Dixie Diner. Bellies full, two Land Rovers and two Casitas in tow, we arrived at the Arkansas park just before the sundown. We took the last two campsites and stuffed four campers in space that normally accommodated two, and settled in for the night. Some of us got up early Saturday to the smell of hot coffee brewing; others were slower to hit the ground. John M. was still in bed, and it was getting close to meeting time at the main pavilion. I made up two plates of eggs, sausage, and fried potatoes and beat on John and Lisa’s door. When John answered I just handed him the two plates of breakfast, and walked off. We all headed to the pavilion to meet the 75 people and stare at the 45 Land Rovers attending the event. After introductions and a safety briefing, we headed out behind trail leader J.T. Stephens on intermediate trails. The trails consisted mostly of loose rocks and ruts, with some hill climbs, too. As long as you followed the correct line, the Land Rovers handled them easily. I had some problems on a long uphill rock section, slick steps covered with water. After some wheel spinning and tire smoking 24

I ended up being winched up the wettest section. We then wandered through the woods and down a five-diamond hill of loose rocks and soil, with more slithering on the descent that I liked. As always off-roading, I learned more about my own capabilities and those of my Land Rover. We had a terrific time at the event, met a bunch of great folks and we ate like kings. Many thanks to everyone at Bluff City Land Rover for making this event happen. P

Land Rover Bluff City Don Mader, the Service Director at the Memphis Land Rover dealership, helped organize this event, held about 230 miles west of Memphis. He got out of his Range Rover Sport long enough to talk with Rovers North: “I really believe in Wheels [dealersponsored off-road events]. The purpose of them is to give customers the knowledge of, and confidence in, their vehicles. Our customers love the events and we’re always trying to get more of them involved. Some still don’t realize just what their Rovers will do off-road. We’ve done these eight times and they just keep getting better.” Bluff City Land Rovers uses the facilities at Superlift Park in Hot Springs, AR. Their 1,250 acres of trails, rated 1-5 in difficulty, range from novice to “have lockers, a winch and a

change of underwear.” The private offroad vehicle park maintains the trails and provides skilled trail guides for events. Don has been in the automotive business for 32 years, but has only been around Land Rovers for three. “A Wheels event in Hot Springs at the Superlift Park was my first time offroading. My wife and I were in an LR3 when we came to the bottom of a steep hill. I said, ‘There’s no way we’re ever getting up that hill.’ We came over the hill with our jaws dropped. I tell customers going off-road for the first time that I lived this testimony! We get every new model of Land Rover attending, from LR3’s, Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports.” “I really love the LR3. One former tech, who now lives in Colorado, flew back for this year’s event. He has a kitted-out Discovery II and we gave him

an LR3 to use this year. He said he didn’t like it because, ‘It does every bit of the work off road for you!’” “One customer and his wife arrived late, after the group had set out already. So I reviewed their LR3’s controls with them, and then led them as we tried to catch up with the trails convoy. When they successfully went up the same hill that once scared us, I could literally hear them scream with delight. Talking with them later, they told me of a recent trip in the Smokey Mountains, during which they had to go off-road around an accident scene. ‘We had to get off the pavement and we were scared to death! Now I’m embarrassed to admit this.’” “We also get tremendous support from the dealer’s president, Farrar Schaeffer. She’s been enthusiastic about these events, even when they’re expensive!” P 25

2009 Land Rover National Rally

WE ARE FAMILY

[Matt Martin, Rovers North’s Marketing Director, selected himself again to attend the Solihull Society’s National Rally. No, we’re not jealous! –ed]

Welcome to Leadville, Colorado. 10,430 breath-taking feet above sea level. 310 days of sunshine every year. It is America's highest incorporated city, and host of the 2009 Land Rover National Rally. Since it began in 1989, the event has navigated some of the most thrilling terrain in Utah and Colorado. Now in its 20th year, the event continues to promote and encourage responsible off-roading while attracting an ever-expanding

20 32

variety of participants. In Leadville this year, the array of Land Rovers that lined up each morning to traverse the trails reflected the diversity of the marque: old Series, new Range Rovers and LR3’s traveling together, learning from one another and lending a hand when necessary. While the owners share a common loyalty to a machine and its capabilities, it is their individual stories that make events such as the Land Rover National Rally so very special.

There were those that defined “enthusiast,” like John Johnson of Crossroads, TX. John describes his love for Land Rovers as a “sickness” that began after purchasing his first in 2003. Since then, there have been four Land Rovers in his possession: two Range Rover Classics (1989, 1990), and two Range Rover HSEs (2001, 2006). Between his other hobbies, which include golf, hot rodding and playing on the water as often as possible, Johnson seeks out trails

Nick Koentyyes of Golden, CO whenever he can. His favorite place to off-road is the Barnwell Recreation Area in Bridgeport, TX – home of the SCARR Rally. It’s a short trip from his front door and offers, “Great wheeling!” There were also those with a head start as a Land Rover enthusiast. We found Nick Koentyes, a high school student behind the wheel of a 1995 Range Rover Classic. Nick, whose hometown of Golden, Colorado is practically in Leadville’s backyard, attended the Land Rover National Rally as a local. Though young, Nick is no stranger to the complex trails that make the Rockies famous for off-roading. He rides in St. Johns and Redcone to take in

the epic views of his home state. When asked how he got into Land Rovers, Koentyes explains he grew up surrounded by Range Rovers. Molded by the owners around him, the passion caught Nick early and at the age of 15, Nick bought his first Land Rover. As different as they are, John and Nick represent the constant of all the Land Rover events I have attended – the shared affection and admiration for Land Rovers. Whether you’re a business owner or a high school student, it’s the appreciation of the capabilities of the Land Rover that connects total strangers from the coast to the Rocky Mountains.

The Land Rover World has the qualities of a family. The events we enjoy together provide a time when husbands and wives can blazes trails together. Friends attack a challenging climb together, adding another moment in their shared history. It’s an environment in which a parent’s love for off-roading can be passed down to their children. And like every great family, we look forward to the next reunion in 2010, and can’t wait to see how much bigger the family gets. P

Romancing the

Snow 2009 Maine Winter Romp

Cupid, draw back your bow And let your arrow go Straight to my lover’s heart, for me Nobody but me…

Story by Jeffrey Aronson / Photos by Brenda Salmon & Jeffery Aronson 38

Ah,

love, as crooned by Sam Cooke decades ago. Where does one find amour today? Why, in the woods of Maine on Valentine’s Day weekend. February 14, 2009, positively oozed romance. From a crisp morning temperature of 14 degrees F, the warmth in Unity, ME, rose to a balmy 27 degrees. The sun shone brightly, the winds died to gentle zephyrs, and the hum of heater blowers bathed the men and women present in the glow of Valentine’s Day. Bruce Fowler, Unity, ME, a long-time Land Rover owner/enthusiast, once again organized this three day event. Avid winter campers could “enjoy” the outdoors on land surrounding his house; other less intrepid adventurers succumbed to charms of the “official host hotel,” the Holiday Inn in nearby Waterville. The wilds of Waterville include Colby College and thus many eating and drinking establishments. Love takes strange forms but it proved its everlasting power; neither snow, nor cold, nor dark of night, nor recession could keep lovers of off-roading from their rounds that weekend as over 75 Land Rovers [and a few canine rovers] enjoyed the sunshine and snow. They came from all over New England, New York, New Jersey, Washington, DC, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. Scott Preston, an expatriate New Englander, even flew up from Nashville just to attend again this year. Over 200 enthusiasts flooded the fields, forests, bogs, motels and bars in this rural region of central Maine. 39

Most Land Rover owners experience feelings of loneliness – I mean, how many other Land Rovers do you see every day unless you work at a dealership? Events like these prove you are not alone; most of the cars at the event were Defenders, Discoverys and Range Rovers, with a minority of Series Land Rovers. They ranged from the utterly stock, like my 1966 Series II-A, to fully-equipped Rovers with locking differentials, jacked up suspensions and 12,000 lb. winches. 40

My own drive to the event typified my careful planning. Just before departing for the ferry I packed a tow strap, extra shackles, my High-Lift jack and base, and extra socks in case I had to jump into a stream again. Of course, it was also possible – but unlikely – that I might actually pull someone else out of a bog, ditch or snowbank. Precision scheduling also meant that I had a 2.5 hour drive in the wrong direction, followed by a 3 hour drive in the opposite direction to Waterville. The saving grace of the 5.5 wasted hours was a long slog on Maine’s only interstate highway, which assures sightings of other Land Rovers. Sure enough, while traveling south I saw three kitted-out Rovers heading north towards Waterville. On my northbound leg, near Portland, I found myself passed by Kevin Murphy, Ridgefield, CT, in his Range Rover Classic. Oddly, I would not see another Land Rover until I reached Waterville two hours later. Checking in at the hotel I spotted a familiar sight, a Series Land Rover with its hood up. Mark Libby, Buxton, ME, had just completed substantial work on his Series II-A 88” before driving north to Waterville. He was attempting to tune-up the car with the help of his friend, Lars Sjulander. Dropping my bags I did what any Series owner would do – I joined in the effort. Grabbing my hand crank and feeler gauge, I turned the engine until the points arm rested on the edge of the cam lobe, gapped the points and then tightened them in place. Mark then timed the engine by ear and the Rover ran well all weekend. A Mexican restaurant in Waterville [yes, I know, go figure] had a large room filled with noisy Rover enthusiasts, many crowing about their new or revamped Land Rovers. Dave Bobeck, Washington, DC, and his girlfriend Sonoe, drove up in his 1984 Land Rover 90 just imported from the UK. This predecessor to the NAS Defender has the ubiquitous 2.25 petrol engine, but an LT77 5-speed gearbox. Dave quickly swapped out the 8-spoke wheels for NAS Defender 110 rims and new Dunlop Radial Mud Rovers, and then tried the car out. Displeased with the 6 mpg the car achieved in city driving, Dave performed an ignition tune-up, adjusted the carburetor, changed the oil, and then drove the car to Maine. The 15 mpg on the highway trip was a welcome improvement. Equally unique was the 1968 109” Marshall battlefield ambulance brought by Jim and Ann Rolston, Deep River, CT. The LHD vehicle once served as part of the British Army on the Rhine [BOAR], part of Britain’s NATO forces. “We bought it from Rovers North when they imported them several years ago. Most had the ambulance bodies removed but we retained ours and turned in into our camper. We ordered an attached tent from Caranex, and a built a sleeping platform in the back. It has a marine heater in the back that kept the cab at about 85 degrees F during the trip!” The Rolstons have put about 45,000 miles on the ambulance, including a few trips to

Cape Breton, NS. While they adore the camper, Ann Rolston noted that the romance of this weekend meant, “We get to stay in a hotel.” In the woods or in the bars, Rover romantics commented on the snow covered trails, quilted-covered motels, and “two lovers,” their S.O and the Land Rover. Michelle McGuire and Jeff Berg, Medford, MA, traveled in their kitted out Discovery II; she called the weekend “a great way to spend Valentine’s Day, doing something you love with people you care about.” Channeling Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon in “Four Christmases,” a couple who requested anonymity said, “Our parents think we’re in Philadelphia.” The Southern New Hampshire Land Rover Club arrived en masse in a large convoy, with evident intent to find the sloppiest, wettest trails and determine whose Rover would get stuck the hardest. Jimmy and Brenda Salmon, Tom Lynch, Don Trudeau and LuAn Ferguson, and other club members hoisted their banner high at the event. On Sunday, they succeeded in burying a succession of mud holes that appeared mysteriously at the bottom of a hill, beneath the snow cover. The ultimate demonstration of romantic affection is, of course, permitting your BFF, GFF, or spouse to drive your Rover off-road. The Maine Winter Romp has seduced many women and men to initiate themselves into off-roading; veteran Rompers will not forget the couple several years ago, in an utterly stock, quite new Discovery II, who tackled challenging

ice and snow conditions. Whatever questions they had about each other were clearly answered when they, coached by supportive veterans, successfully navigated difficult trails. So as this year’s convoy approached the infamous “Power Line Hill,” many eyes focused on Andy Rigo and Carine Duval, Boston MA. Andy’s ’98 Discovery I LSE came with 117,000 miles and benefited from a Rimmer supercharger, a Borla exhaust, Old Man Emu shocks and BF Goodrich AT tires. For her initiation into off-roading Carine came more equipped for Back Bay shopping than Maine trails, but she here got behind the wheel and faced the long and winding trail up the hill. Andy moved over to the passenger’s seat while Scott Preston offered additional tips. By late afternoon, the hill’s snow pack had become quite slippery; only the sides of the path offered any traction. Carine balanced the Discovery perfectly, enough wellie for bite but never loosing grip. At the top of the hill, her leap for joy and scream of delight echoed across the fields. That’s what winter off-roading is all about. It’s a safe if chilly way to introduce yourself or others to off-roading. You’ll go slow enough to avoid most body damage. Stay out of the mud holes beneath the snow and you’ll have few problems, if any, with brakes and suspension systems. Lovers rejoice! The 2010 Maine Winter Romp is scheduled for February 12 -15 (for more information, see www.winterromp.org). P

ALL HAIL THE QUEEN Story & Photos by Joseph Arvay [Joseph Arvay, Mendham, NJ, is an orthodontist, avid tennis player, and a collector of 19th century clocks, which he loves to repair. Two of his four Land Rovers reside on Nantucket. Here’s his latest addition. – ed]

I

t all began in 2003, with my notion that a Defender 90 should become the off-road beach car for vacation time on Nantucket. From our small cottage in the tiny hamlet of Siasconset, we realized we were not alone in our love of the Defender. During my online search for the Defender, I found myself constantly distracted by the sight of Series II-A 109” 5 doors. One in particular really captured my attention – indeed, love at first sight. Kathy, my wife, had approved of the Defender, but how on earth could I sell her on the idea of an antique 1966 109” Fire Tender from Palfau, Austria? It had been purchased by the Palfau Fire Department from Land Rover in 1966, and immediately sent to Rosenbauer, in Vienna, to be outfitted as a fire tender. Rosenbauer has been in the fire equipment business since before the turn of the twentieth century, and on the front fender of the 109 I spotted their aluminum ID tag in script. With only 12,000 miles on the odometer the interior looked quite pristine – even the elephant hide upholstery looked in pretty good shape. Everything worked, and the truck had been well cared for those years. Most everything was original. The fire engine red Land Rover 109 featured Palfau Fire Dept. insignias on the front doors, a Bosch spotlight, twin-tone siren, iron and wood roof rack, and last but not least, blue emergency lights on the roof.

49

I asked Kathy to come over and look at the computer screen and tell me what she thought of this Rover; I closed my eyes, made a wish and waited. She took one look and said, "That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen." Huzzah! I purchased the 109, and later an AA Yellow Defender 90 soft top to complete our island transportation. Each April, Nantucket welcomes spring with "The Daffodil Parade". It begins on Main Street in Nantucket Town with the showing and judging of 100 registered antique cars. The cars fill the entire cobblestone Main Street area. That’s where the 109” comes in; since its first parade in 2004, it’s been joined by several antique Landys as well as a host of sports cars, muscle cars, fun trucks, Rolls Royces, Bentleys and some really wonderful exotic cars. A parade follows the concours d'elegance whereby the antique cars drive out from town seven miles on Milestone Road. Thousands of Nantucketers line the way with cheers of appreciation. The parade ends in Siasconset where the serious partying begins. There is a contest for the best theme that involves your antique auto. Some memorable past themes have been "High Tea" with two blue Morris Minor Travelers, a country auction on the back of a 1939 flat bed Ford (sandwiches were actually auctioned off), a recreation of the Norman Rockwell painting of Thanksgiving Dinner, 50

complete with large frame and every detail, and the MG club's set of four MGBs outfitted as sailboats as seen in Nantucket's Rainbow Fleet. The "Daffy Parade" provided an excellent and unique opportunity to let the 109's blue lights flash and European sirens wail. The local police made it clear that I had permission, under those circumstances only, to utilize the emergency equipment. During the summer of 2005, there was one little incident, however. The 109” was parked in front of our cottage and a little girl passing by with her folks just had to see the blue lights flash. So I turned on the key and pulled out the light switch under the dash. What harm could there be? She really liked the show. I turned off the ignition. A few minutes later my friend and I hopped in and began driving the 109 to town. We were about a mile down Milestone Road when an oncoming police car turned on his flashing lights and signaled me to pull over. I turned to my friend in disbelief. "I certainly could not have been speeding in this 2.25 Liter Landy." The officer came up to the driver side window. "Have you got a switch for those blue lights?" he asked. I said," Right here under the dash!" Whoops, I had forgotten to turn off the switch for the lights. We had been trundling down Milestone Road with lights-a-flashing, totally clueless.

The officer made it clear that I could not drive the 109 unless the blue lights were either removed, or covered. So, for the next couple of years I placed white plastic bags over the lights. It looked pretty comical, but what could I do? At the 2007 Daffy Parade we again had great fun with the lights sans white plastic bags. Some how the bags didn't make it back into place right after the parade, either. As a matter of fact, it was in September that a Massachusetts State Trooper pulled me over and quite forcefully told me that if he saw me again with those blue lights in place, he would personally climb up and rip them off the roof (he was a little overzealous and getting a little frothy at the mouth.) He simmered down a little and gave me a $350 ticket which he explained was a bargain because there were some other issues – such as the front license plate residing in my side pocket and not on the front fender – that he was going to overlook for now. The lights had become a significant issue. That winter, the idea of returning the 109 to its original pastel green, which the interior had retained, was looking pretty good. Of course that would mean obliterating the Palfau Fire Dept. insignias. However, I could keep the really neat Bosch spot light, and of course, I suppose, the blue lights had to go. I did receive some resistance from friends that felt I should not change the character of

the vehicle. After consideration, I felt that I was merely removing most of the Rosenbauer conversion and returning her to how she left Solihull. And so it happened. I retained all the Rosenbauer components should some future owner want to re-convert back to a fire tender. She almost looked like a new car!! For the April 2009 "Daffy Day Parade" our theme was "The Queen". In the biopic, Queen Elizabeth did, after all, drive a 5-door. I donned the rented kilt and long socks in my role as Prince Philip; Kathy waved royally in her kerchief, large sunglasses and regal outfit for as Queen Elizabeth. British flags completed the scene. Story and Photos by: David Walworth

[David Walworth, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, came to see that his life in the Virgin Islands was incomplete without a Land Rover. Here’s how he experienced his epiphany. –ed] Two decades ago my life with a ’63 MG Midget MK I, a ’69 Austin America and a ’51 Singer 9 4A seemed complete. Three events transformed my life. First, I saw the movie “The Gods Must Be Crazy” and decided that, if I ever got a truck, it would be a Land Rover. Second, after a year-long program in boat design at The Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design in Kennebunkport, ME, I started building boats at Goetz Custom Boats in Bristol, RI.

52

A broken crankshaft in the MG necessitated the search for a new ride. Eventually I found a ‘67 109 diesel SW in my price range. It had everything desired except for RHD. After being shipped up from North Carolina, I discovered it would not start. Hmm, it’s awfully smoky, too. Hmm, it’s on power. Finally, while looking at the engine, the solution dawned on me. The injection pump lines were hooked up 1-4-3-2, not 1-3-4-2. With that fixed all of a sudden I had much more power and nowhere near as smoky a ride. On visits to New Haven, I met Michelle Peterson, then a grad student at Yale. Along with others she had accepted my offer that anyone who came up to Bristol to help sand and

paint my Atalanta 26 sailboat would go sailing that summer. Several people came up, and after sanding, we went out for beer and pizza. Michelle demonstrated her exceptional courage by jumping in the Land Rover with me. Thus began her slippery slope into our life together. She sailed with me that summer and continued her studies as I attended grad school in Naval Architecture at MIT. I learned that with overdrive, a tailwind and downhill slopes on I-95, a 109” diesel station wagon can actually hit an indicated 70 mph. I lived on the sailboat at a marina in Charlestown, MA, with parking for the 109” right on the pier in the winter. During the summer season, however, the marina provided valet parking at a nearby garage. I taught the valets how to start and turn off a 109” diesel, which is a little different than your average Mercedes or BMW. Michelle finished her Ph.D. in cell biology and started a post doctoral fellowship at Duke, so the visits now involved AA (American Airlines, not the other). As our wedding in April 1996 approached, she had still never driven the Land Rover – due mainly to her total lack of experience with manual transmissions and an admonition from her mother about the suicidal tendencies of Boston drivers. Still, the groom’s cake at our wedding was a replica of the 109”. My new post would be at Gold Coast Yachts in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. To prep the Land Rover for the move, we took it to Vermont and had Brett Cooper complete many drivetrain and brake system repairs on the car. As I had damaged the steering column removing the tranny at one time (Note to self: when using a forklift to lift out the gearbox, pay attention and do not get the tip of the fork under the steering wheel), we decided to go ahead and convert it to RHD (we drive on the left

here in St. Croix). So now I had the last option on the Rover list. Work left me no time to teach Michelle to drive the Land Rover so she learned on her own. Now, this actually worked well as drivers on St. Croix are very polite and very good about letting people out in traffic, to the point where the people on the main road, with right of way, will actually stop. Clearly we’re not in Boston anymore. Soon Michelle can double clutch in and out of second like a pro. She likes the upright sitting position, and even the diesel rumble is kind of fun, plus the steering gives you a workout. Even on St. Croix a cute blonde driving a ‘67 109 Land Rover provides a unique experience. It is the only 109” wagon on the road down here (although there is a 110 wagon with the TD 5). It’s even part of island lore now. One day Michelle and her mother are doing the tourist thing and step into a store for the first time. The store owner asks if they are interested in signing a petition (something to do with a project at the Hess oil refinery here). The store owner says, “You can both sign if you are related, as long as one of you lives here.” Michelle says “I live here, my husband is the new naval architect at Gold Coast Yachts.” The store owner looks at her and says, “Oh, you’re the doctor that drives the Land Rover.” Now remember, she has never been in this store before this moment...

53

James Taylor’s book about Series Land Rovers reported that Land Rovers are stable to 45 degrees of heel; one day, I inadvertently tested this. We live up a dirt road halfway up a mountainside. The Guinea grass here grows fast and tall. There was this place (now called “Michelle’s Overlook”) where the Guinea grass concealed the true edge of the roadway. I pulled over to the left to let our neighbor pass by and felt the wheel fall into a bit of a hole. The car stops. No problem, pull back on the red lever and off I go. The car still does not move. Meanwhile, Brett, the neighbor, has stopped his car, jumped out and run over to us, with a distinctly alarmed expression on his face. I had no idea about the seriousness of our situation until I got out and looked: the left front wheel tilted downward over the edge and the right rear wheel clawed the air. Despite the list, the 109 was still stable. Eventually, with the help of a floor jack and a come along, the 109” was dragged sideways back onto the road. While I missed my dentist appointment, I did gain further confidence in the Rover’s abilities. 54

Meanwhile, in true Rover addict fashion, I decided I wanted my own 88”. While the 109” is nice, I wanted the shorter wheelbase one for maneuverability. Plus, an 88” looked cute. My requirements: it had to be a ‘67 or earlier (as I prefer the look of the headlights in the breakfast); RHD (as I only shift with my left hand); and a diesel, as with the rains and roads here you can go through big puddles (I liked the concept of no ignitions system to drown out). A galvanized frame would be nice, too. Eventually, on LRX.com we found an 88” that had everything but the diesel. A friend in Boulder, Colorado agreed to look at it for me and gave a good report. After mailing a certified check the “Little Red Rover” arrived on St. Croix. Meanwhile, our boat sat on her trailer for some work to the keel trunks. We decided to bring her up to our place so it would be easier to work on her and to stop paying rental fees that would make the Mafia jealous at the boatyard. The 109”, being a diesel and equipped with a Salisbury (I swapped one in while at MIT), seemed to be the better choice. We enlisted our landlord, Roy, who is always up for an adventure, to help us. At the bottom of our hill, we made our simple plan. Roy said, “put your foot on the floor, do what I tell you and don’t look back.” There were occasional noises of whoa, look at that, etc., but I remembered my part of the plan and carried on. We made it to our place no problem. Michelle delights in driving her 88”; students from the University of the Virgin Islands, her employer, wave to her on the roads. Everyone knows “Dr. P’s” car. But one night, she decides not to drive and calls for me to pick her up. It was starting to rain pretty hard when I left to go to the university. There was water everywhere. This gut across the road near the bottom of our hill filled up with roaring water. I put it into low range and tested it. Almost immediately the front wheels started moving sideways. I slammed it into reverse and backed it out. We decided to try a different route. That bridge was also under water. We tried yet another route. This route was along the Scenic Road, a dirt road along the top of a ridge. We reasoned the water accumulates at the bottom of the hill, so stay on the top of the hill. We motor along the road, and suddenly there is this waterfall where the road used to be. We stop and check it out. I open the driver’s door, step out, and realize that the water is starting to run over the edge of the road where we are, I can see the road eroding as I am looking at it. Michelle guides me back to a place where we can turn around. We continue back and go yet one more route. In the meantime, the rain has abated and the roads seem less flooded. We get to the bottom of our hill and start heading up the hill. Still there’s a hole in the road bigger than the 88”. We back down the road to a safe place to leave the car.

We walk the rest of the way. Our normal 15 minute ride from UVI has now taken at least an hour and a half. Of course, adventures like this are one of the reasons we love living here and driving Land Rovers. In the morning, we walk down and clear some bush around the hole. Michelle can stand in this hole, which is the width of the road, and the road way is at her shoulder. To get by, you have to drive sort of on the side of the hill. No problem – that’s what the red lever is for. Now we’re in downtown Gallows Bay and there I break a rear axle shaft. I push down the yellow knob and we drive home in front wheel drive. I wonder how the 88” will negotiate past the hole on a slope covered with wet grass, mud and front wheel drive only. It won’t – the front wheels start spinning and sliding toward the hole. Being an engineer is good for something; I back down and turn the car around. Michelle gets out to direct me – plus, there is now someone to run up the hill and call 911. I start reversing up the hill and there is plenty of grip. I get her lined up and nail it. The 88” just cruises right by the giant hole. Michelle jumps in, I stick her into 3rd low range and up we go to our space. Did I forget to mention that it had started to rain again? Another tropical wave was coming through. We grab a spare set of axle shafts, some gear oil, the drain pan and some tools and drive the 88 down to Roy’s shop. Now the power goes out, but we have changed axle shafts before. Under the car with a flashlight we commence removing axle shafts, draining oil, pulling the differential. We get the broken bits out, new shafts in, new oil and off we go. In the meantime, the poor 109 had serious frame problems. We purchased a new Marsland frame through Rovers North and had it drop shipped from the UK, which worked fine and was considerably cheaper shipping wise. As the bulkhead was both bent and rusty, we sourced one and began the laborious process of changeover.

For two years, we had a side job taking air samples for the US Geological Survey. The tool used to collect samples is a small vacuum pump pulling air through a filter. The pump runs off an inverter hooked up to the car’s battery. Naturally, the bonnet is up in this operation. Frequently, people would see the bonnet up and ask if we needed help. Then, when we said no, they would see the mechanism and ask what we were doing. It was a fun way to meet people. One day this man and his family stop by; they’re Morgan and Mini owners. We talk for a bit and he takes a picture. A month later, this letter arrives at UVI. The address reads: University of the Virgins Islands, St. Croix Campus Lady Professor who drives Land Rover St. Croix, USVI It arrived in her box on campus four days after the postmark. In it is a page from the Morgan Car Club newsletter with the picture he took. We are frequently approached in parking lots and at petrol stations and asked if we are interested in selling our Rovers. Every time we say “no,” and we’re likely to continue that line for a long time. P

Good Morning,

America!

Story by Andrew and Karen Taylor / Photos by Jeff Aronson

[Andrew and Karen Taylor, London, England, shared the beginnings of their around the world tour in a recent issue of The Rovers North News. With their trusty ’08 Defender 130 they’ve traveled across the US and Canada. Here’s the latest installment of their travels. –ed] Hello US of A. After months of preparation, we finally arrived to start the next step in our adventure. We took our UK registered 2008 Land Rover 130” to the USA and Canada so we could experience the diversity of the scenery that is on offer over here. The Land Rover proved to be the natural choice for the trip due to the large number of unpaved, logging and trail roads that cross the countryside, all of which are generally accessible to the public. Given the Land Rover would be our only transport and accommodation, we chose to avoid extreme off-roading. Still, the Rover afforded us the luxury of seeing some of the back country otherwise inaccessible to a camper van or worse, a rental car. During our travels we came across our fair share of washboard roads, boulder strewn areas, sand drifts and washed out roads. These roads offered challenging driving, we found we always needed to be prepared for what’s around the corner. The Land Rover 130, nicknamed “Doobie Doo,” arrived in San Pedro Los Angeles and was unloaded from the container without any damage. Unfortunately we had neglected to disconnect the batteries for the transit. The resulting flat batteries started off our problems.

60

Incorrect jump starting of the Land Rover resulted in damage to the solenoid on the twin charging system. As a consequence of this schoolboy error the main battery drew a charge continuously and hence overheated. Initially, we put the foul smell down to the Los Angeles smog, but soon figured out the odor was that of an Optima Red Top battery slowly cooking itself. Luckily we had made it to our first night stop, although we did contemplate just getting on an aeroplane and going home. A local RV shop in Ventura, CA, fixed the problem quickly. Day One also saw us take a wrong turn into one of the least salubrious areas of LA, run a red light in central Beverly Hills, and pay $25 dollars for 30 minutes parking at an alleged scenic beach just outside LA. Things settled down and we began truly enjoying the adventure of a lifetime. Our route to date has seen us cover 12,000 miles in the Western USA and Canada. From Los Angeles we headed north to Vancouver, across British Columbia to Alberta and the Canadian Rockies. Along the way, we have headed back inland to visit the numerous National Parks that dot western America, and enjoyed a month’s stay in Colorado. As well as hitting the big name parks such as the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Yosemite in California, the Moab area in Utah and the Canadian Rocky Mountains, we have visited many other parks that, being Scottish, we had never heard of: Lassen, Olympic, Mount Rainier, Zion, Bryce. It is hard to pick one particular state or park that we could say was our favourite, as all have been truly spectacular for their own unique reasons. In reality, we could fill a book just trying to describe the marvels of any one of the parks or states. The final leg of our USA and Canada trip saw us drop back into Montana before heading down to Yellowstone National Park; from there we headed east. When we arrived in Maine, we found a tire store recommended to us by East Coast Rover in Rockland, ME. There we spent time meeting up with the East Coast Rover staff and Rovers North News Editor Jeff Aronson. Now we’re off for a month’s respite in northern New England where we will marvel at the changing colours of the autumn leaves. When the leaves fall we’ll ship the Land Rover

from New York to the UK, and we’ll head off to New Zealand and Australia for Christmas. Unfortunately, the cost of shipping and importing the Land Rover to New Zealand for a two month period has proven prohibitive, so we’ll have to say good bye to the Land Rover a little earlier than we had initially planned. While traveling, we split our time equally between camping, motels and rented accommodation. A year living under canvas may sound fun, but it is impractical when you are staying at 10,000 feet in Colorado in May and you are still surrounded by snow, or when you want to see the highlights that San Francisco or any other major city has to offer. We have, however, found ourselves saying strange things when camping like, “Isn’t this great, we should do more camping,” then it rains for two days and we are glad to get back to the comfort of a motel or an apartment and indulge in the luxury of a hot bath. When we set out on our adventure, we thought it would be about the spectacular scenery and the National Parks. Yes the scenery is, to use that overplayed word, “awesome”, but the reality is that the trip has not been about the scenery at all. The truth is that the trip has been about the people we have met on the road, in the stores, at the gas station and in the campgrounds, all of whom have their own interesting stories to tell. The Land Rover has been a true ambassador and instigator of much conversation, some of which has resulted in true friendships that will endure long after the Land Rover’s chassis has rusted beyond repair. Without such an iconic vehicle to kickstart memories of ownership from years gone by, or evoke thoughts of adventures crossing the African plains, we truly believe we would not have met a tenth of the people we have, had we elected to do the trip in a white camper van. While we started this trip cynical about the Land Rover’s reliability, and questioned our own sanity for actually bringing the Land Rover Defender to the USA and Canada, we can advise now that we are true converts to such a significant piece of automotive history, which has proved itself reliable, exciting and capable of anything. P

SIGHTINGS Here in northern New England our colorful leaves have given away to the brown scowl of early winter. Cheerful thoughts have come from readers who’ve sent us lots of Sightings this issue. Once again we’ve enjoyed superb entries that warrant emptying more of the crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always it's helpful for rookies – and useful as a reminder for the grizzled veterans as well – to review the rules for Sightings. In tough economic times, every product looks more desirable when in the presence of a Land Rover. Ads for The Childrens Place feature an NAS Defender 110. Eden and Jim Reynolds, Jacksonville, FL, Chanty and Roy Adams, Holladay, UT, Aaron Colliver, Simpsonville, SC, Marshall Gardner, Fremont, CA Woolrich’s woolen clothing makes sense when you’re trying to stay warm in the soft top Series II-A used in their catalogue. Stephen Johnson, Johns Island, SC, Mark Freeman, Green Ridge, MO, Fred Holmgren, Athol, MA, Sherry Block, Hadlyme, CT, Jackie Pippin, Westfield, MA, Warwick Hansell, Salt Lake City, UT, Chuck Padula, Westford, VT, and James Shaffer, Milton, PA Lands End also features a hardtop II-A. Fred Holmgren, Athol, MA, Ann Williamson, Delanson, NY, Matthew Hines and David Lane (see Rule #6), Jeff Foland, Clarksville, OH, James Shaffer, Milton, PA, Andy Draxler, Locust, NJ, and Jessica Carthew, London, ON John Glass, Wellesley, MA, saw a Defender 110 in a Paul Smith ad for the New York Times Style magazine. Kevin Humphrey, Jonesboro, AR, and Stephen Johnson, Johns Island, SC, spotted several photos of a Series Rover in the latest Orvis catalogue. Jack Nardone, Hampton, NH, spotted several shots of a Hawaiian Series Land Rover in the Crazy Shirts catalogue. Cecil Reaves, Canton, GA, reminded us of the Tickford station wagon used in a Filson ad. Cpt Bill Warkentin, Oceanside, CA, admitted he filched the in-room San Francisco City Guide to send us the Barbour ad with the Defender in the background. Steven Walls,

Baton Rouge, LA, read a restaurant article in Departures magazine; Walls admits he ignored the photo of the celebrity chef in her car but saw the Range Rover in the background. Eric de Rochambeau, N. Kingston, RI, sent in some previously-mentioned Sightings but also copies of the September Four Wheeler magazine, which included articles on no less than three different Land Rovers. He also sent in a copy of North Kingston magazine, which included an article on an African safari with a Defender in the photo. Walt Warner, Bethel, VT, read an interview on Larry Redmon in the Bourbon Review; the accompanying photo is of Redmon and his restored 109”. Matthew Kosaber, Johnstown, PA, noted that the Lancaster Farming newspaper included a nice shot of a topless Series III 109” in an article on Trader’s Point Creamery. Jeff Stewart, Cheney, WA, read an article on Geoff Arnold in Traditional Bowhunter magazine; the Australian hunter uses a Land Rover. Steve Walls, Baton Rouge, LA, also found images of an air boarder who transports himself in a Defender 90. Richard Thomas, Savannah, GA, noted a Series Rovers is used in the Africa exhibit at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, NC. Eric DePetris, Middleburg, FL, reminded us that a Range Rover Classic sits in the middle of the lion exhibit San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. Greg Goffman, Coshocton, OH, found an IBM ad on emerging markets that uses a topless Series Rover to symbolize “emerging.” The past winner of several mugs wanted to “share the wealth” and sent a huge assortment of promotional items to share with Rovers North, all very much appreciated. Allen Minner, Carnation, WA, noted that an Investors Business Daily article on the “new GM” featured a photo of a Defender 110 and a Range Rover P-38 – huh? LG cellphones features a Defender 90 in its latest tv ads. Kirk Przybylski, Lakewood, OH, Mitch Milner, Truckee, GA, John Costello, Ridgefield, CT, LCDR Michael Freidie, Pembroke Pines, FL, Ronnie Massey, Franklin, NC, Chris Whybrew, Broken Arrow, OK, and Derek Leath, Frontenac, MO. Justin Charles,

Sightings Rules: Rule #1: All Sightings receive appreciative recogntion but not necessarily a mug. We reward only those Sightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their owners, and display them in a distinctive way. Rule #2: Sightings should find Land Rovers where you might not expect them. This rules out Land Rover sales advertisements, off road magazines, British television programmes, British publications, films with British themes, and shows about African safaris. Rule #3: At an ever-changing date before publication, we close off the Sightings. If we've mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we won't mention it again. If you're new to the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue. Welcome aboard!

Rule #4: We're not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue. Rule #5: Sightings that are Land Rover references in books go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention when space permits. Rule #6: Psst.. if we can’t read your name and address because of atrocious penmanship we can’t recognize the Sighting or potentially send you a mug. Psst… E-mail submissions – remember we can’t send you a mug via e-mail. Send us your real name and shipping address, too. Rule #7: Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he might have made an error. Let us know if you think you’ve been jobbed. We’ll review everything but the decision of the Editor is final. P

Kennebunk, ME, noted that Land Rovers appear in the animated show “The Venture Brothers” on Adult Swim. Nicolas Dover (See Rule #6) watched a Quebec television program called, “Passion Whiskey,” touring the Isle of Jura; “Rovers and single malt! That deserves a mug.” It does deserve a toast, but see Rule #2. HGTV knows that it needs Land Rover to spice up its shows. “What You Get for the Money” included a shot of Defender 90 in front of one Pittsburgh house, reports Suzette Esteban (See Rule #6). David Matlock, Lebanon, MO, has a Discovery Series II in “My First Place.” In “The Property Shop” Lori Peterson (See Rule #6) notes that her husband is a “Land Rover fanatic who keeps the entire family looking for Land Rovers” so she was pleased to spot the real estate agent’s Range Rover in the episode. Bill Hinsley, Seattle, WA, watched NBC’s The Philanthropist and spotted a Defender in a scene out of Nigeria. Grant Turpin (See Rule #6) appreciated the “gorgeous” dark blue Range Rover Classic in “Dark Blue.” Nathan Mapson (See Rule #6) had a “duh” moment when a Discovery Series I was substituted for a Range Rover Classic in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Doug Barnes, Waitsfield, VT, reminds us that the cover of the American Map Road Atlas has two women and a pooch on its cover. Steve Stricker, Oxford, MS, noted that Mobil 1 is once again running ads featuring Land Rovers to move the oil. In a Camping World ad during a Nascar truck race, Richard Fenwick, Ashville, OH, is certain he saw Series Land Rovers used in the ads. Noel Chiongian (See Rule #6) reminded us of the Outback Steak House menus with the Discovery on the cover. Benjamin Richards, Monument Beach, MA, noted the Outback ads that feature a similar car. Peter Lynch, Redmond, WA, saw a rerun of the AT&T yellow pages ad with an elderly couple in a 109.” Matthew Cook, Soldotna, AK, also saw a Range Rover Sport in the sales brochure for Icon aircraft. Ryan Skrak, Bluffton, SC, noted that photos of Defender 110’s improved an article in Celebrate Hilton Head magazine. Randy Kremer (See Rule #6) saw the Armani ad in Details magazine with a while NAS Defender 90. The movie “Taking Woodstock” includes a Land Rover in a scene, sadly being worked on in a garage, notes Gavin Robinson, Maynard, MA and Brad Haley, Redlands, CA. Thaniel Smith, Dublin, VA, noted a Discovery in the movie 13 Going on 30. Neill Thornton reminded us of the presence of a Series Rover in the G I Joe movie. Andrew Konopka (See Rule #6) also saw Taking Woodstock, and also noted a Range Rover in the TV show “Kings.” Matthew Cook, Soldotna, AK, saw a Range Rover in an ad for the new show “Jupiter Jack.” Belinda Garza, Lorain, OH, watched a Defender LWB pulled a baby elephant out of a trough on Animal Planet. Ladders reran its successful Super Bowl ad that featured Series Rovers, seen by Brent Lane, San Diego, CA. Bruce Bishop, Sacramento, CA, and Ed Graham, Temple, GA noted that new ads for Spiriva medicine include a Series Rover. Joe Weinham, Neshanic Station, NJ, watched a misidentified Discovery used as a shooting target in the Outdoor Channel’s “Shooting Gallery.” Scott Peterson (See Rule #6) reminded us that there’s a Range Rover often in The Closer.

The Triumph TR-7 world enjoyed a moment of fame in one Lady Gaga video; Matthew Cook, Soldotna, AK, actually listened to her lyrics in Paper Gangsta that included “your Range Rover heart.” He also reminded us of the Jet Li movie Unleashed, that featured some Range Rovers. Lastly, Matthew believes that there’s a Range Rover Sport clone in the Xbox 360 Grand Theft Auto. Karen Gattuso, West Point, VA, remarked that a Range Rover figures in the movie "A Dog Year". Stephen Dickerson, Dayton, OH, noted that Apple, renown for its design flair, includes a Series Rover in their “Quick Tips” video podcast. Andrew Gold, Hacienda Heights, CA, noted that Motor Trend linked the Defender 90 with other “cool cars” such as the ’62 AC Shelby Cobra, the ’53 Porsche 550 Spyder, and the ’70 Dodge Challenger. Motor Trend called the Defender “simply the quintessential off-road rig. For others, well, there’s always the Pontiac Vibe.”
