April is a historic month in South Africa – 27 April marks Freedom Day. How blessed are we to live in a country where we enjoy so much freedom? Whenever I think about the concept of freedom, I can’t help but hear the iconic voice of Vicky Sampson singing “My African Dream”. I had the privilege of chatting to Vicky recently (see pg 32) and discovered that the song turns 30 this year – what a patriotic moment! We also chatted to local celebrities about what Freedom Day means to them.

This edition promises to be a jam-packed read, keeping you in the loop with everything you need to know.

Until we read again,

SAFEGUARDING SOUTH AFRICA’S

most vital resource

RAND WATER HAS LONG BEEN A CRUCIAL PART OF SOUTH AFRICA’S INFRASTRUCTURE, ENSURING THE PROVISION OF CLEAN AND RELIABLE WATER TO MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.

As one of the largest bulk water suppliers in the country, Rand Water’s impact extends far beyond households – to industries, businesses, and municipalities. It’s role in maintaining a stable water supply is crucial in a country where water scarcity and infrastructure challenges remain pressing concerns.

A legacy of water supply

Founded in 1903, Rand Water was established to address the growing demand for water in Johannesburg and its surrounding areas due to the gold mining boom. Rapid industrial growth had placed immense pressure on water resources, and what began as a local solution then has since evolved into a huge operation supplying potable water to Gauteng, parts of Mpumalanga, the Free State, and North West Province.

Over the years, the water utility developed an extensive network of reservoirs, purification plants, and pipelines, ensuring a consistent supply of high-quality drinking water. Today, it serves over 18 million people across more than 37 000km2, making it one of the largest bulk water suppliers in the world and reinforcing its critical role in South Africa’s development.

At the heart of Rand Water’s success is its commitment to sustainability and innovation. The organisation has consistently invested in modern infrastructure, advanced purification processes, and efficient distribution networks, ensuring that the water supply meets the highest safety and quality standards, says Rand Water Group Chief Executive, Sipho Mosai. “We are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of a changing environment while ensuring millions have access to clean water.”

But, he adds: “Society as a whole must acknowledge that despite great efforts, severe water challenges persist, posing a threat not only to humankind, but to all species in the environment.”

Mosai’s leadership success

Under Mosai’s leadership, Rand Water has earned a global reputation for delivering water of the highest quality – consistently surpassing national and international standards. A strong set of values underpin its commitment to this, says Mosai: “Equity stands at the forefront, ensuring fair and just treatment for all stakeholders.” Rand Water upholds integrity, fostering trust through transparency and ethical practices. A spirit of partnership drives collaboration with

stakeholders. “I have also remained an advocate for corporate social responsibility and community engagement, spearheading initiatives that go beyond water supply and tackling broader socioeconomic challenges, aligning Rand Water’s goals with national development priorities,” says Mosai.

A leader with expertise in science and executive management, Mosai has consistently applied these strategic objectives to every decision made at the utility. “Rand Water strives for excellence in all its operations, he says.

Mosai’s emphasis on maintaining financial health while investing in state-of-the-art technologies and infrastructure has led to significant projects. These include the construction of the largest post-tension reservoir in Vlakfontein, Ekurhuleni, with a 210-million-litre capacity, and the largest purification plant since the end of Apartheid – the 600-million-litre-a-day Station 5A at Zuikerbosch Water Purification Plant. These achievements are reflected in Rand Water’s impressive financial performance amid economic challenges and a tough operating environment. The organisation has seen revenue growth of 11.4%, reaching R21.8bn, driven by cost-reflective tariffs and volume growth. Gross income has grown by 15.3%, reaching R7bn, while a gross income margin above 30% year-on-year is maintained through a dedicated focus on cost efficiencies. This translates into a solid bottom line, with a net income growth of 29.0%, reaching R4.56bn in 2023 – up from R3.54bn in the previous year. The net income margin has risen to 20.9%, boosted by returns on strategic investments. Liquidity and financial risk management, says Mosai, remain crucial to Rand Water’s financial sustainability.

In addition, the organisation has successfully redeemed the RW21 bond with a total nominal value of R1.6bn in April 2021, followed by the RW23 bond in December 2023, valued at R1.2bn. Its financial sustainability was reinforced further by the issuance of three new bonds in June 2021, in senior and sustainability-linked notes amounting to R1.7bn. These bonds attracted over R4.5bn in capital market bids, signalling strong investor confidence in Rand Water’s financial health. The organisation was also the first state-owned company in Africa to issue a sustainability-linked bond, the largest ZAR-denominated sustainability-linked bond at the time. In March 2022, Rand Water won the Bonds & Loans Africa Award for groundbreaking work in sustainable finance.

Preserving water for future generations

To ensure the preservation of water for future generations, the organisation has focused on developing cutting-edge treatment plants. These initiatives help bolster water supply and ensure the continued reliability of water access for communities in need.

Furthermore, the Rand Water Institute plays a vital role in driving innovation and research within the organisation. Its focus on developing advanced technologies and solutions for enhanced water supply and management has positioned the Institute as a thought leader in the water industry, both locally and globally. By fostering collaboration and knowledge transfer, the Institute is helping Rand Water stay ahead of emerging challenges in water management.

As South Africa grapples with water scarcity and infrastructure challenges, Rand Water is committed to providing a reliable, sustainable water supply for future generations. With strong leadership, smart investments, and a focus on its core values, the organisation is dedicated to protecting the country’s most vital resource. IB

Rand Water provides bulk potable water to more than 18-million people in the South African provinces of Gauteng, some parts of Mpumalanga, Free State and North West.

Rand Water customers include metropolitan municipalities, local municipalities, mines, and large industries. Rand Water has a global reputation for providing water of high quality that ranks among the best in the world, consistently meeting and exceeding both national standards and international guidelines on water quality.

The strategic objectives of Rand Water include operational integrity, achieving a culture of high-performance, and continuous growth. Rand Water uses best-fit technology and positively engages with its stakeholder base to maintain financial health and sustainability.

mean to you? What does Freedom Day

APRIL MARKS A SIGNIFICANT MONTH IN HISTORY FOR SOUTH AFRICANS. ON 27 APRIL 1994, MZANSI HELD ITS FIRST POST-APARTHEID ELECTIONS AND INTRODUCED THE NEW CONSTITUTION. WHILE IT IS OFTEN SEEN AS JUST ANOTHER PUBLIC HOLIDAY, WE ASKED LOCAL CELEBRITIES WHAT FREEDOM DAY REALLY MEANS TO THEM.

KATLEGO MABOE, HOST OF DEAL OR NO DEAL SOUTH AFRICA

“It’s a moment for us to really reflect –so many years later, yet still fresh in our collective memory – on the sacrifices that were made to allow us to be the South Africa we are today, where we have choice. We have the autonomy to make decisions that determine our future.

“This is exemplified in Deal or No Deal South Africa, which I’ve hosted for the past two years. We give our contestants the choice and ability to self-determine. Freedom Day is such an important occasion for all South Africans to pause and reflect on our responsibility as citizens. We want to see our country move forward, thrive, and prosper. Every decision we make, just like that vote in 1994, shapes our future. It’s a very, very important day, and I hope all South Africans truly take to heart what it means to celebrate Freedom Day.”

JAWAAHIER PETERSEN, SUIDOOSTER ACTRESS

“Freedom is exactly that—the feeling and the knowledge that I am unshackled as a human being. That I have the right to be who I am in all aspects. The freedom to move, speak, exist, love, learn, and work as I wish.”

PATRICK ‘KAT’ SELEKA, SKEEM SAAM ACTOR

“For me, Freedom Day means the emancipation of all Black people in South Africa – the right to be whomever they want to be, without restrictions.”

CHEF KATLEGO MLAMBO, MASTERCHEF SOUTH AFRICA JUDGE

“Freedom Day holds profound significance for me. It embodies all the dreams, hopes, aspirations, and even lives sacrificed, to attain the freedom that enables me to be who I am today – Katlego Mlambo, a young Black male culinary artist in South Africa, able to authentically live out my passion and pursue my career ambitions.

“In isiZulu there is a saying: ‘Ubuntu ngumuntu ngabantu’, meaning ‘A person is a person through other people.’ Those who came before me paved the way for my freedom of expression. That is why 27 April is a day of immense gratitude for me.”

$AIN’T CLAIR, SINGER AND ACTOR

“Freedom Day reminds us of the sacrifices made by heroes like Ashley Kriel and many others who fought for our liberation. Yet, decades after democracy, we are still fighting – against inequality, poverty, and the struggles of the Coloured community. Nelson Mandela reminded us that ‘after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.’ True freedom is not just about voting; it’s about dignity, opportunity, and justice for all. As we celebrate, let’s remember that the journey is far from over. The fight continues.”

SAMELA TYELBOOI, GENERATIONS: THE LEGACY ACTRESS

“It means that I get to be whoever I dare to dream I could be, thanks to the sacrifices made by those who came before me and put the wellbeing of everyone ahead of their own.

“It is a day that compels me to interrogate my ambitions – considering how they could advance the cause of a better South Africa for all, from my immediate environment to the country at large.” IB

From LA to SA

IN A STORY THAT BRIDGES CONTINENTS, BRIANA EVIGAN – FAMOUS FOR HER ROLE IN THE ICONIC STEP UP FRANCHISE AND NUMEROUS HORROR FILM APPEARANCES – EMBARKED ON A LIFECHANGING JOURNEY. SHE SWAPPED THE GLITZ OF HOLLYWOOD FOR THE VIBRANT HEART OF SOUTH AFRICA, DEDICATING HERSELF TO UPLIFTING CHILDREN AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH HER IMPACTFUL ABUNDANT VILLAGE PROJECT.

With a passion for philanthropy and motherhood, Briana Evigan traded her dancing shoes for a pair of veldskoene and a pitchfork, following what she calls “a calling”: to launch Abundant Village in South Africa.

Born in Los Angeles to actor Greg Evigan and his dancer, model, and choreographer wife, Pamela, Briana’s journey to South Africa was born of deep reflection. But, she says, moving “...from Los Angeles to South Africa was an easy choice once it truly came down to it. I knew that everything I wanted to create – the impact, the healing, the connection – was only going to happen if my feet

were firmly on the ground. The moment of clarity came one night during the Covid-19 pandemic, hiking through the mountains near my home. It wasn’t just a thought; it was something deeper, a calling. My dog’s spirit, ever-present and guiding, told me it was time to go. And we had to go together.”

Leaving behind family and friends was the hardest part. “But what I didn’t expect was how quickly life would open up in ways I’d never imagined.”

She adds: “I have a saying: ‘follow your dreams,

and the rest will come’. Two months after arriving, while filming a documentary, I found love, got engaged to Damian Mander, became pregnant, and launched two companies –MoveMe Studio – a production house – and Abundant Village, our 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It was a whirlwind, but it felt like everything was aligning exactly as it was meant to.”

And, like so many who fall in love with SA, Briana found herself enchanted by its unique spirit. “South Africa welcomed me the way it always does – with open arms and an unspoken understanding. There was this fresh burst of energy inside me, a fire to chase the unknown. But life, as always, had its own rhythm. Plans shifted when I had to split my time between South Africa and Zimbabwe, balancing life, love, and global fundraising efforts to support Abundant Village. It wasn’t the path I had initially envisioned, but I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge.”

Briana adds that the transition from Hollywood to full-time philanthropic work has been its own kind of adventure. “It’s been filled with challenges, but also rewards that hit on a whole different level. In entertainment, success is measured in accolades and box office numbers. In this world, the wins are fewer and farther between, but when they come, they’re beyond rewarding. Seeing a child receive a second meal at school because of our work, watching a community light up with opportunity – those moments are the real trophies.”

For Briana, this shift represents the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, one that started in her teenage years when she created a dance programme for disadvantaged youth in Compton, LA. “I always felt the pull towards something bigger than myself; I didn’t know exactly what my path would look like, and honestly, I’m still figuring it out.”

Despite her new focus, Briana’s passion for film remains at the core of who she is, and she’s not ready to let go of it entirely. “I’m still in the business of filmmaking; I just want to do it differently this time. MoveMe Studio, the production company I co-founded, is designed to be a bridge between Hollywood and international filmmaking, between commerce and purpose. Africa is overflowing with raw talent and untapped potential, and I want to

bring that to the global stage. Through MoveMe Studio, we’re committed to giving back; 50% of our net profits go directly to Abundant Village, creating regenerative revenue streams that fuel community development. It’s not just about making films; it’s about making films that matter, that give back, and create lasting impact.”

Who says you can’t have a bit of both worlds?

Briana continues: “Both the philanthropic work and the film world fuel me. They keep me full at the end of the day when I finally crawl into bed, exhausted, but knowing I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.”

It hasn’t been easy, she adds. With a toddler and two step-kids she inherited through her marriage to Damian but who are as much her own, plus navigating life between countries, the process has become more complex. “But we’re doing it,” she says, with a smile. “Piece by piece, story by story, we’re building something that I know will leave a lasting mark.” IB

RACHEL KOLISI STEPS DOWN AS CEO OF KOLISI FOUNDATION

Kolisi Foundation CEO Rachel Kolisi recently announced her resignation from the role she had diligently fulfilled since the foundation’s establishment in 2020. The NPO she established alongside her former husband, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, has become a beacon of hope and assistance, addressing critical societal issues across South Africa. With Rachel’s departure from the helm, the spotlight now turns to her next steps, as she is expected to continue her advocacy of various social causes. Although the specifics of her future plans remain under wraps, the impact she has made through the Kolisi Foundation proves her continued relevance within the social justice arena.

TYLA AND SEAN PAUL: THE COLAB WE NEVER KNEW WE NEEDED

South African sensation Tyla and dancehall heavyweight Sean Paul have released the music video of their hit remix, “Push 2 Start.”

Aptly capturing the essence of the track, the bold and chic styling of the visuals further elevate the catchy energy, as does the undeniable chemistry between the two artists. Whether it’s the sleek angles of the camera capturing Tyla’s movement, or Sean Paul’s rhythmic swag, every frame radiates a nostalgic glow reminiscent of early-2000s aesthetics.

CRYSTAL-DONNA

ROBERTS DIES AFTER CANCER BATTLE

Tributes have been pouring in for the actress Crystal-Donna Roberts, who passed away on 6 March. Her husband, Schalk Cornelessen, announced her passing in a stirring social media tribute. The 40-year-old film industry heavyweight fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully in her sleep. Bubbly, brave, and much-loved for her roles in the popular SABC soapie 7de Laan, kykNET’s Arendsvlei and several theatre projects, she also delivered standout performances in critically acclaimed films such as The Endless River and the award-winning Krotoa. Her powerful portrayal in Krotoa not only earned her the prestigious SA Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Actress in a Feature Film in 2018, it also cemented her status as a leading figure in the industry. Her performances resonated widely, showing an authenticity that drew viewers into the depths of her characters. Hamba kahle Crystal-Donna!

ADAM SANDLER’S “FASHION” RAISES EYEBROWS AT THE OSCARS

Thumbing his nose at Tinseltown’s “unwritten” red-carpet fashion rules, actor Adam Sandler turned up at the Oscars recently in casual chic, reminding everyone just how ‘Sandler’ he can be. Of course, host Conan O’Brien was probably watching the arrivals on his monitor to find fodder for his opening gambit as the selfproclaimed “fashion police” (we miss you, Joan!) and, with his tongue firmly in cheek, Conan announced it was important that everyone be “properly dressed” for the occasion. His eyes (of course, the cameras, too) quickly cut to Adam, sitting comfortably in his seat sporting a pair of basketball shorts and a bright blue hoodie. “You’re dressed well, Adam!” Conan quipped. Adam appeared totally unfazed, which you would be, if you were part of the act, just sayin’. Still, he made an unforgettable impression on the evening!

DOLLY PARTON BIDS FAREWELL TO HER HUSBAND, CARL DEAN

Country music icon Dolly Parton recently revealed that her husband, Carl Dean, had passed away on March 3. He was 82. The couple shared nearly six decades of a loving though very private relationship – Dean was famously publicity-shy. Dolly has since released a song dedicated to him: “I Wouldn’t Be Here, if You Hadn’t Been There”. “Carl and I met when I was 18 and he was 23,” she said, “And like all great love stories, they never end. They live in memory, and in song”.

THE SUSSEXES CHOOSE A LOW-KEY LIFESTYLE FOR LILI DIANA

In an age when celebrity children and royalty often live in the spotlight, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are choosing to buck the trend with Princess Lilibet of Sussex. Understandably, as the beleaguered couple have had their own troubles with a hostile media. Lili Diana is being nurtured away from the prying eyes of the media, allowing her a childhood free from the intense scrutiny that comes with royal lineage. Easier done in California than at Buck House, of course, but Lili Diana’s parents are adamant that the youngest member of the Sussex family be raised away from the pap lenses. Friends of the Sussexes say that Harry and Meghan are committed to ensuring Lili and Archie experience as many ‘normal’ childhood moments as possible. This contrasts sharply with the lives of their royal cousins, Princes George and Louis, and Princess Charlotte, who often make an appearance at public engagements.

diOxygin LIFE IN ABUNDANCE

Meet diOxygin, a South African gin that’s redefining the art of gin-making with its unique blend of Queen Mandarin and Spekboom, while celebrating heritage and sustainability

diOxygin is a premium South African gin infused with Queen Mandarin and Spekboom, offering a smooth, citrusy, and aromatic profile. Crafted with precision, it has earned four prestigious awards, making it a top choice for gin lovers. Rooted in heritage and sustainability, diOxygin is more than just a spirit – it’s a celebration of life, community, and environmental responsibility.

A story of legacy and love

diOxygin’s story begins in Patensie, Eastern Cape, where founder Lindie Ferreira Cillié grew up surrounded by citrus groves and a deep sense of community. Her parents, Espie and Hilda Ferreira, embodied generosity, always ready with a helping hand and love to share.

When they passed in 2021, their legacy of kindness and resilience inspired this gin: a tribute to their love, life, and the land they cherished.

The “di” in diOxygin represents not only the two hero botanicals but also Espie and Hilda themselves. Espie, a dedicated citrus farmer, is reflected in the vibrant Queen Mandarin, while Hilda, who nurtured a beautiful garden, lives on through the resilient Spekboom.

Infused with nature’s best Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) – Africa’s tree of wonder

This powerful native South African succulent acts as a carbon sponge, reducing our carbon footprint and fighting climate change by absorbing CO₂ and generating life-giving oxygen. With its naturally tart, lemony flavour, it brings a refreshing twist to diOxygin. We encourage people to plant their own Spekboom to help combat climate change and contribute to a greener future.

Queen Mandarins – A burst of citrus

Grown on our family farm, these mandarins add the perfect balance of sweetness, freshness, and complexity. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, they enhance both flavour and well-being.

Sustainability

and giving back

As a female-led brand, we live out “Life in Abundance” by giving back. We donate mandarins to local community homes and aim to allocate a portion of our proceeds to filling oxygen cylinders for local old-age homes, ensuring those in need receive the care they deserve.

Sip, celebrate, and make memories

diOxygin isn’t just about gin – it’s about savouring each day, sharing laughter, and creating lasting memories with loved ones. That’s the true essence of living life abundantly.

Join diOxygin on this journey as it celebrates life, community, and a sustainable future.

What’s been your biggest “pinch-me” moment in your influencer career?

I’ve been incredibly lucky to step into spaces that once felt like distant dreams, turning them into reality through hard work, passion, and persistence. Some of the most defining moments in my career have been collaborating with brands I’ve admired for years.

If you had to describe your content style in three words, what would they be?

Authentic, Aesthetic, Relatable

If you had to delete all but one social media app, which one would you keep? TikTok.

What’s your guilty pleasure that you’re not ashamed of at all?

Watching way too many series, KDramas, and YouTube videos while I should be working, lol.

What’s been your biggest “pinch-me” moment in your influencer career?

I’ve experienced many moments that make me think, “Wow, I did that.” However, one stands out: in June 2024, my friend Keith Juluka and I released a music video to what is probably the silliest song ever, and we never imagined, nor expected it to gain traction. To our surprise, it received significant support from audiences around the world. Our song aired on Irish radio stations, and our Instagram reel was even commented on at the Grammys. I truly couldn’t believe that such prominent figures recognised who I was.

If you had to describe your content style in three words, what would they be?

Comedic, Inspirational and Entertaining

If you had to delete all but one social media app, which one would you keep?

I would keep TikTok; I love the app so much! It allows me to truly express myself and receive genuine support from others on the platform. On tough days, TikTok becomes my source of comfort, whether I’m creating content or simply watching what others have shared.

What’s your guilty pleasure that you’re not ashamed of at all?

My cellphone is definitely my guilty pleasure; I realise that I might have developed an unhealthy relationship with social media. But it doesn’t really matter because I still consider myself to be quite extroverted.

What’s been your biggest “pinch-me” moment in your influencer career?

What matters most to me are the people. My biggest “pinch-me” moment comes when someone randomly tells me they follow me and shares what they love about my content. Even though content creation isn’t my primary income source, these in-person connections are special. It’s not about validation, but about being reminded that real people are watching, appreciating, and supporting what I do. These moments ground me and remind me that we’re creating content for people, not just brands.

If you had to describe your content style in three words, what would they be? Exploring, reflecting, and yapping.

If you had to delete all but one social media app, which one would you keep?

I would definitely keep TikTok – it’s my mini news hub, and centre of entertainment… And most of my latest life hacks I’ve learnt right there! It’s also the source of my creative inspiration and where I’ve made some really great friends IRL.

What’s your guilty pleasure that you’re not ashamed of at all?

One of my ultimate guilty pleasures (with zero guilt!) is collecting cute trinkets, especially when I travel. I love finding unique items to remind me of the places and people that shape my worldview. I’m also completely obsessed with collecting water bottles and glassware. Anything cute like that, and I’ve got to have it!

My biggest “pinch-me” moment was seeing my TikTok account blow up in five months, starting at three thousand followers and sky-rocketing to 30k+.

If you had to describe your content style in three words, what would they be?

Four, actually: gym videos and lip-syncing videos.

If you had to delete all but one social media app, which one would you keep?

TikTok, of course!

What’s your guilty pleasure that you’re not ashamed of at all?

Woah! My guilty pleasure… Um… There are many, but I’ll confidently say that chicken wings and milkshakes are my guilty pleasures.

My African Dream turns 30

OUR “AFRICAN QUEEN”, VICKY SAMPSON, IS REVIVING THE ANTHEM THAT UNITED SOUTH AFRICA AT DEMOCRACY’S DAWN WITH A POWERFUL NEW REMIX. THIRTY YEARS ON, ITS MESSAGE OF HOPE AND UNITY STILL RESONATES, PROVING THAT SOME DREAMS NEVER FADE.

South Africa is famous for its diamonds, but some of its brightest gems aren’t found underground – they’re in the music industry. And for nearly three decades, one song has stood out as an enduring anthem of hope and unity for South Africans no matter their race or creed – Vicky Sampson’s iconic “My African Dream”.

Now, as the song celebrates its 30th anniversary, it remains a powerful tribute to the spirit of a continent. As I sat down with Vicky, we reflected

on the journey that led her here, through South Africa’s turbulent past and into its ever-evolving present. Her connection to the song, she says, is deeply personal.

“I am honoured to be a part of SA’s democracy,” she says, recalling her days as a passionate activist in Hanover Park, where she helped found the local youth club.

“When Alan Lazar composed this song, I felt that he’d written it specifically for me. He understood

my love for South Africa and the continent.”

Alan had produced and composed several songs on Vicky’s first album, Shine, including his notable hit, “Love Will Shine On You”. “In 1995, when we were looking for new material, Alan was our first choice,” says Vicky. At the time, though, Alan had already started planning to move to LA, where he still resides today. But before he left, he wrote “My African Dream”. “I’m deeply honoured to have this song, which he’d first played for me on a piano at his Johannesburg cottage. Our prior collaboration laid the groundwork for ‘My African Dream’.”

Reflecting on the song’s inception, Vicky says when they recorded, “none of us – not even the record execs – had any idea it would become what it has. We didn’t fully grasp that we were at such a pivotal moment in SA’s history, having just held our first democratic elections in 1994.”

The first time Vicky performed the song at a major event was the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. “I sang it at the opening and closing ceremonies,” she recalls. “Bafana Bafana won the Cup that year, and I remember walking out to a packed FNB stadium. As I stepped onto the field, I said a silent prayer in the tunnel before going out. Seeing and hearing the crowd was mind-blowing. In hindsight, I think I was so young, but even then, I knew something great was about to happen.”

In her career, Vicky has shared the stage with global icons like George Benson, Michael Jackson, and Peabo Bryson and performed for dignitaries such as Rev. Allan Boesak and the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. But for her, the pinnacle was meeting Nelson Mandela. “These are some of my most memorable and

precious moments as a proudly South African woman,” she says. “My mother played a role in the Anti-Apartheid Struggle and set a powerful example for me. Looking back, these are the things I’m most proud of.”

Now, South Africa’s unofficial anthem will be revived in collaboration with CH2, a guitar duo from Gauteng. Vicky was introduced to them by her producer, Colin Law, whom she had worked with in 1990. Colin, who collaborates extensively with CH2, arranged studio time for the recording. CH2 had previously recorded the song with an artist from Rwanda, and when Colin suggested redoing it with Vicky, they were eager to get involved. “It’s a beautiful, fresh new version of the song, and I’m excited for fans to hear it this month,” says Vicky.

Even after three decades in the industry, Vicky remains creatively energised. Her recent music, like the song “Hoerikwaggo” a tribute to Table Mountain using its original Khoisan name –highlight her deep connection to her roots. While these new tracks await their time in the spotlight, her optimism remains strong.

Vicky remains hopeful about the country’s future. “We somehow manage to put our struggles and past in the places they belong in order to carry on. It’s not an easy task, as we face a backlog of degeneration. But I believe I am part of the solutions we seek, and I choose to focus on the positive things we can still celebrate as a nation.”

At 59, Vicky says her new life is just beginning. “A lot was taken from me over the past four decades. While it might have seemed like I was flying high at times, it’s nothing compared to what I know lies ahead. I’m humbled by the wonderful opportunities presented to me now, from community work to giving back to the industry and developing young people in Cape Flats. Retirement? Absolutely not.” Who knows? Maybe in 10 years, Vicky will be back, celebrating 40 years of “My African Dream” with another collaboration.

“I am part of a great nation and history,” she declares. “This is Africa’s time, surely! This is My African Dream!” IB

THE QUEENS OF DURBAN ARE BACK!

SEASON

5 OF THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DURBAN IS HERE! WE GO BEHIND THE SCENES TO DISH THE DIRT ON THE FRESH FACES, RETURNING DIVAS, AND SIMMERING FEUDS THAT ARE ABOUT TO SET THE COUNTRY ABLAZE!

The Real Housewives of Durban is back for Season 5, and let’s just say you’ll want to brace yourselves! This Showmax hit has returned with more drama, more glamour, and more jaw-dropping moments than ever before. If you thought last season was wild, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

The show continues to reign as one of Africa’s biggest reality TV franchises, keeping fans glued to their screens (and their WhatsApp gossip groups) as alliances shift, friendships break, and shade is thrown like confetti. With four familiar faces and three fabulous newcomers, this season is serving up a delicious cocktail of luxury, personal growth, and, of course, the kind of drama that keeps us tuning in for more.

Who’s back?

Fan favourites (and the true OGs) Nonku Williams and Sorisha Naidoo are returning, alongside Jojo Robinson (from Season 2) and Angel Ndlela (from Season 4). And if you recall the explosive Season 4 reunion, you’ll remember Sorisha dramatically swearing off ever speaking to Jojo and Nonku again. Well, guess who’s back? Turns out, reality TV magic (or maybe some behind-the-scenes negotiations) has brought her right back into the mix. The big question is: has the beef been squashed, or are we just warming up for Round 2?

Meet the new housewives

Three fresh faces are joining the squad, each

bringing their own flair, energy, and potential for messy drama – er, we mean dynamic storytelling.

Ayanda Mthembu: At 35, she is a mom of two and optometrist who balances family life with two thriving practices. Ayanda, who was once a fan of Slee Ndlovu and aligned herself with Team SoSlee, is enthusiastic about the new season.

Kwanele Kubheka: A mother of four and an entrepreneur, 30-year-old Kwanele brings both social media savvy and life experiences to the table. With a traditional marriage of over a year under her belt, she seized the opportunity to join the show as a way to share her authentic story. “I’m simply being myself. If that helps clear up any misconceptions, then great.”

Lo Sithole: At 40, Lo is not only a pastor’s wife but also a co-owner of an artisan training school. Her dual roles showcase a balance between faith and enterprise. “I wanted to have a life-changing

experience and give the audience a glimpse into the life of a pastor’s wife.”

The newbies spill the tea I caught up with the new ladies to get their take on their debut season.

What was your first experience on RHOD like?

Lo: Overwhelming! But also an honour. As a first-time Housewife, it was a rollercoaster of emotions… especially when the trailers dropped! That’s when it really sank in that I was on an international show. Cue the happy tears!

What made you say yes to the show?

Kwanele: I was actually meant to join in Season 3, but wasn’t sure at the time. Eventually, I thought, ‘If I don’t try, I’ll never know what doors it might open!’ Now that I’m in my Grown Girl era (30!), it felt like the right time.

Lo: I wanted to experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and inspire women to see that we can wear all the hats: powerful, successful, and fabulous. And, let’s be honest, I also wanted to show up and show off!

Ayanda: I’m a mum, a wife, and a businesswoman, and I wanted to showcase that women can balance it all and still chase their dreams. The world is our oyster, darling!

What can viewers expect from you this season?

Ayanda: A lot of heart and realness. Expect fun, some life lessons, and maybe a little bit of craziness thrown in!

Lo: Oh, definitely the fun and calm aura I bring, but don’t be fooled: there’ll be some spicy moments, too!

Have you picked a favourite cast member yet?

Lo: Sorisha is my bestie, but I’ve also grown close to Angel.

Ayanda: My faves are Fafa and Jo.

One item you can’t live without?

Kwanele: My phone! My business depends on it.

Lo: My husband! But on the show? My phone! I need to call my husband between scenes!

Kwanele Kubheka
Expect fun, some life lessons, and maybe a little bit of craziness thrown in!

Favourite food?

Kwanele: A good Durban curry, but my husband’s chicken & prawn pasta wins.

Lo: Biltong, all the way.

What’s your daily routine like?

Lo: Mum duties first! School drop-offs, work, then back to fetch the kids and their extramurals. Evenings are for family and dinner.

Ayanda: School runs, work, and an afternoon walk (aka birdwatching, my new obsession).

Kwanele: Gym, grocery runs, school pick-ups, extramurals, dinner, and finally catching up with my husband before bed.

Buckle

up, it’s going to be a wild ride! With old tensions, new friendships, and plenty of fabulous drama, Season 5 of The Real Housewives of Durban is set to be a must-watch. Grab your popcorn (or a glass of bubbly), because the queens of Durban are here to slay!

FIVE MINUTES WITH COMEDIAN Khanyisile Ngwenya

DYNAMIC, TALENTED, HILARIOUS, ANIMATED, AND INTERESTINGLY DIFFERENT ARE SOME OF THE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE THIS COLOURFUL GIANT.

Born and raised in Soweto, Khanyisile Ngwenya may be petite, but she’s a firecracker on stage. Born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, an inherited (genetic) bone disorder, her unbreakable spirit led her to stand-up comedy in 2020. In 2024, she was a runner-up in the Jive Funny Championship, earning her a spot at the Jive Comedy Festival. She has opened for Dillan Oliphant and performed alongside Riaad Moosa and Joe Barber. Though she once dreamed of being a doctor, she now prescribes laughter –healing souls, easing aches, and delivering joy, one “haha” at a time.

What’s the secret to being a top-class comic like yourself?

Being authentic, relatable and willing to poke fun at yourself.

What’s the best joke you have, that always gets the crowd roaring with laughter?

Addressing the elephant in the room and poking fun at myself always works. A lot of my jokes are along these lines because the crowd obviously wants to do the poking but don’t feel comfortable, so I do it for them. They love it.

How do you recover from a bad joke?

I own the bad joke. It is hilarious when you make fun of whatever goes wrong at the time, just don’t let it be cringy; be funny with it.

How do you compile your jokes?

You know the saying “the jokes write themselves”, this is true of my style of comedy. Life, people, and situations I observe help me compile my jokes.

You arrive at an event totally unprepared to be called up for an onthe spot gig... What’s your first move?

I panic, run around screaming and waving my arms in the air. Then I stop, breathe, put my clothes back on and start the show. Hahaha, jokes; I never run, for anything. Even when chased. But I do panic for a second, pray, then do what needs to be done. The important thing is to never back away from a challenge, otherwise you’ll never grow. Hold it right there; this does not mean I used to back away from challenges and that’s why I’m only 123cm tall! IB

wants to “Dance Sum More” Mango Groove’s Claire Johnston

FORTY YEARS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS NO SMALL FEAT, BUT MANGO GROOVE HAS MADE IT LOOK EFFORTLESS. AS THE LEGENDARY BAND MARKS THIS MILESTONE, LEAD SINGER CLAIRE JOHNSTON TAKES A MOMENT TO REFLECT ON AN EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY FILLED WITH UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS, VIBRANT PERFORMANCES, AND THE UNIQUELY SOUTH AFRICAN RHYTHMS THAT HAVE SHAPED HER LIFE.

Claire Johnston’s voice is as powerful as ever, carrying the spirit of a band that has entertained and united people across divides. “Apartheid was in force, and music had the power to heal and connect people in a way that politicians never will. I believe it still does,” Johnston muses.

She was just 17 when she joined Mango Groove in 1985. Her singing teacher had received a call for the “best female singer,” and fate took it from there. Going into rehearsals with an all-male, seven-piece band was intimidating and nerve-wracking, but the real kicker? No microphones.

“I was overawed to be in a room with proper jazz musicians like the late Mickey Vilakazi and Banza Kgasoane,” she recalls. “What’s really funny is that the first time the guys actually heard me sing properly was at the gig.”

The early days of Mango Groove were “messy and organic”, she says – a wild mix of musical influences that evolved into the signature 11-piece powerhouse it is today. Their distinctive sound – infectious, highenergy, and deeply rooted in South African heritage, gave the world hits like “Dance Sum More” and “Special Star”.

“Reflecting on four decades is fascinating,” she says. “We have some legacy projects in the works – a documentary, a musical, and more.” But for Johnston, nothing beats the thrill of performing. “Our favourite thing is playing live; we’ve never stopped. The plan is to take the show around the country and beyond… and who knows, maybe some new music will follow.”

Mango Groove’s history is studded with iconic moments: performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival,

at Madiba’s inauguration, and even taking the stage during the handover of Hong Kong in 1997. But it’s not just the big events that stand out for Johnston. “There are the smaller but no less significant moments: the first time you hear yourself on the radio, or sell out a venue... The camaraderie, the anxieties of a shared journey over decades as a nonracial band in SA...”

But there’s more to Johnston than just Mango Groove. “Deep down, I’m a frustrated actress. I’m also determined to start a clothing range – easy to wear, with a quirky edge and a dash of glamour.”

After all these years, certain performances still give her chills – like singing the national anthem at a rugby match. “You’re surrounded by intensely passionate fans, and it’s not about you. Your job is to do justice to the anthem and set the tone for the players to go out and be their best.”

Balancing life on- and off- stage has been a lifelong lesson. “I’m still figuring out how to be a balanced and happy human being between gigs and recordings,” she shares. “I’m getting better at realising the importance of exercise, proper emotional rest, and close friendships.”

After 40 years, Claire Johnston and Mango Groove are still making magic. And if she has anything to say about it, the dancing is far from over. IB

The Famous Beatles ‘Feud’

On 10 April 1970, the world of music was forever changed when Sir Paul McCartney, then just 27 years old, issued a press statement that signalled the end of an era: The Beatles had officially split. In his statement, McCartney declared, “I have no future plans to record or appear with The Beatles again, or to write any music with John.” Lennon, caught off-guard by McCartney’s public announcement, responded bitingly: “Paul hasn’t left; I sacked him.”

That moment served as both an end of a great period in rock ‘n roll, and new beginnings for Paul, John, Ringo, and George. However, it left fans of the Fab Four utterly distraught.

KNOW YOUR APRIL MUSIC HISTORY!

Beyonce’s happily ever after!

In 2008, the world witnessed a union that would redefine power couples in the music industry. R&B diva Beyoncé Knowles married charismatic rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, in a private ceremony in the heart of New York City, at Jay-Z’s huge apartment. The event was an intimate affair attended by, among a dozen others, Beyoncé’s Destiny’s Child bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, as well as Coldplay’s Chris Martin and his then wife, actress Gwyneth Paltrow. The Carters have charted their paths as individual artists while supporting each other’s career advancements. They have three children: Blue Ivy, and twins Rumi and Sir Carter.

Adele setting fire to the rain

On 21 April 2016, renowned UK singer-songwriter Adele was officially named Britain’s richest female musician ever by the UK’s Sunday Times in their annual Sunday Times Rich List. The singer-songwriter had by then amassed a staggering £85 million fortune, a figure that catapulted her into 30th place on the list of the top 50 music millionaires in the UK and Ireland, then. Adele’s climb in the rich ranks showcases her remarkable career trajectory, bolstered by record-setting album sales, soldout global tours, and numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards for hits such as “Someone Like You” and “Hello.”

ON THE CHARTS

At InBound SA we’ve always got the music going, because no great experience is complete without the ideal soundtrack, right? So, this month, we’ve decided to curate a selection of songs that we hope will provide the perfect backdrop to your lifestyle.

HINT: Expect to hear the latest chart-toppers alongside timeless tracks that evoke cherished memories. Our collection encapsulates various genres and styles, ensuring there’s something for you, whatever your taste.

SANDILE KGAPHOLA, KNOWN IN THE ART COMMUNITY AS SK ORIGINAL, IS RAPIDLY EMERGING AS A FORMIDABLE NAME IN CONTEMPORARY ART, CAPTIVATING NOT ONLY SOUTH AFRICANS BUT INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTARS LIKE CHRIS BROWN, TOO.

At just 23, the versatile artist Sandile Kgaphola, known in the art community as SK Original, has gained recognition for his innovative approach to art, including drawings and rugs. His creativity has propelled him into the limelight, leaving even seasoned artists in awe.

A serendipitous start

SK’s artistic journey is rooted in the solitude forced by lockdowns, a period he describes as an unexpected gift. “I remember I was in high school, and there wasn’t much to do since we were told to stay at home for, like, six months,” he shared. “So that’s when I just started drawing people’s faces, trying to get good at drawing.”

Initially honing his skills through simple drawings, SK transitioned to painting a year later and introduced innovative double-sided paintings by 2023. His breakthrough came with the creation of cracked/shattered glass art – a technique that sets him apart in the artistic landscape. “I created my first crack glass art, but it wasn’t perfect,” he reminisced.

This technique involves meticulously arranging shards of shattered glass to create striking portraits of famous public figures, a process that echoes not only the beauty found in imperfection but also the transient nature of fame.

Celebrity connections

SK’s artwork has become a powerful commentary on celebrity culture, prompting viewers to reflect on its complexities. Each piece tells a story –whether it’s featuring famous personalities on rugs or inviting viewers to appreciate the intricate artistic process behind the work.

His art has not only caught the attention of Chris Brown but also led to curated works for other prominent figures, including Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and rapper Rick Ross.

SK’s upcoming encounter with Chris Brown during the latter’s 2024 tour of Mzansi was facilitated by Major League, a celebrated Amapiano duo who opened for the singer.

“I made sure that my social media presence was high when I created the artwork, or when

I posted the artwork. I started creating it from the moment I saw the poster, but then I posted it later when I knew my engagements were high enough to make that one trend to a certain level.

“So Major League saw the artwork, and they were very connected with Chris Brown, like –they opened for him on both nights,” he explained.

“They put me on when I came to meet Chris Brown and helped facilitate the things that needed to happen to get the artwork to him, which was a very, very, very awesome moment because,” SK said, his excitement evident in his voice.

He vividly recalls the exhilarating experience of driving from Polokwane to Johannesburg without any sleep, all to ensure he could deliver his art to the star.

SK frequently draws inspiration from African heritage, incorporating elements that connect with both pop culture and current trends. “In this artistic field, you can’t do everything alone. Sure, you can draw alone, but you still need help,” he acknowledged, emphasising the importance of collaboration in the creative journey.

BELOW: SK Original hands over a unique cracked glass portrait to Springbok captain Siya Kolisi.

Expanding his reach

Looking ahead, SK has big plans. He is eager to expand his portfolio, with aspirations for a gallery exhibition as well as the potential for his work to reach museum audiences.

“A key goal would, kind of be, to have at least one gallery exhibition. You know, I think that kind of puts me in a good position in the artistic world because most of my art has kind of been of artists, like vocal artists or DJs, you know,” he said As he paves his path in the art world, he aims to bridge the gap between visual arts and the vibrant culture of music, which has significantly influenced his artistic journey.

Reflecting on future projects, he added, “I am excited to go into doing more rugs this year. I’m not able to do every art style at once, because I’m just one person, but that’s why I won’t always post certain types of hard work. I feel like that caters to individuals that might not be able to go for or afford the crack glass work,” he said. IB

Turning brushstrokes

INTO BANKNOTES

ONCE SEEN AS THE DOMAIN OF COLLECTORS AND CONNOISSEURS, ART IS NOW MAKING ITS MARK AS A POWERFUL FINANCIAL ASSET, ATTRACTING INVESTORS LOOKING FOR STABILITY AND HIGH RETURNS. WITH THE GLOBAL ART MARKET VALUED AT $552 BILLION IN 2024 AND PROJECTED TO GROW TO $944.59 BILLION BY 2033, THE POTENTIAL FOR SUBSTANTIAL GAINS IS UNDENIABLE.

According to Marelize van Zyl, CEO of Aspire Art, investing in art is no longer reserved for the ultrawealthy. “We’re seeing a shift,” she explains. “More collectors are entering the market at all price points. The key is understanding how to identify value – whether in emerging artists or established names.”

For those looking to build an art portfolio with long-term financial rewards, Van Zyl shares expert strategies for navigating the market.

1. Understand what drives value.

An artwork’s worth extends beyond its visual appeal – economic factors play a crucial role. “Price is influenced by an artist’s reputation, provenance, and historical significance,” says van Zyl. “Collectors who understand these elements can make acquisitions that appreciate significantly over time.”

She highlights a prime example: “Cinga Samson’s work was selling for R1 700 in 2010. By 2023, similar pieces were reaching R240 000. Identifying artists on the rise can lead to impressive financial gains.”

2. Seek expert guidance.

Navigating the art market requires insight and expertise. “Consulting specialists can mean the difference between a good purchase and a great investment,” van Zyl advises.

She recalls a remarkable case: “In 2012, I sold a still life by Georgina Gratrix for R45 000. By 2018, it achieved R591 000 at auction – a 1 211% return on

investment. This demonstrates the importance of making well-informed decisions.”

3. Invest in emerging artists for high-growth potential.

While established artists like Irma Stern remain a safe bet, Van Zyl emphasises the financial benefits of supporting up-and-coming talent. “The art world is constantly evolving,” she notes. “Collectors who spot the next big names early can see extraordinary returns.”

4. Utilise online auctions and flexible payment options.

Technology has made art investment more accessible. “Online auctions provide valuable exposure to market trends and pricing,” Van Zyl explains. Aspire Art has also introduced a ‘buy now, pay later’ scheme, allowing buyers to spread payments interest-free over three months, making collecting more feasible.

5. Think long-term, but act now.

Patience is key in art investment, but timing also matters. “Right now, we’re in a buyer’s market,” Van Zyl points out. “That won’t last forever. Those who invest strategically today could see substantial gains as market conditions shift.”

For investors, art offers both aesthetic and financial rewards. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting out, the opportunity to build wealth through art has never been more accessible.

REDEFINING LEGACY

I don’t really feed too much into my emotions. I get nervous like anyone else, I get thoughts of doubt, but I try not to dwell on them.

HE MIGHT NOT BE KNOWN FOR HIS HEIGHT, BUT TEMBA BAVUMA’S GAME IS BUILT ON FINESSE AND PATIENCE, AND THE ELEGANT COVER DRIVES HE’S FAMOUS FOR. AS THE PROTEAS MEN’S CRICKET CAPTAIN, HE CARRIES NOT ONLY THE WEIGHT OF EXPECTATIONS ON THE FIELD, BUT ALSO THE HOPES OF COUNTLESS ASPIRING ATHLETES.

In March 2021 and February 2023, Temba Bavuma made history as he became the first black captain of the national cricket team in the limited overs and Test forms of the game respectively, reshaping the narrative of the sport in South Africa.

“Having played a lot of games and seen a lot of stuff, it does help you kind of deal with the things you can’t control,” he says, reflecting on the complexities of leadership. But the journey hasn’t been easy. It’s been a long road of dealing with his own ambitions and challenges, and the constant pressure of being a role model.

“You’re a beacon of hope for people with similar backgrounds. They can dream realistically, that they can be where you are. You’re not just doing it for yourself.” he says.

Growing up in the Cape township of Langa in the shadow of South Africa’s complex history, he overcame obstacles he says, only because of the unwavering support of his family and community. “I think, like any sportsman, you’re bound to go through certain challenges. Some challenges I’ve faced may be more unique to me as a person in South African cricket,” he says.

In a sport that with the advent of the T20 form of the game favours power hitters, Bavuma, with his modest height, was often overlooked. But his elegant strokeplay, technique, and mental fortitude has taken him to the top spot.

On 5 January 2016, he became the first black cricketer to hit a Test century for South Africa, scoring an unbeaten 102 in the second Test against England at Newlands Cricket Ground

in Cape Town – a moment that cemented his place in the team, and in SA cricketing history.

Now, as captain, he faces even greater pressures.

“It comes with a great deal of responsibility, scrutiny, and criticism,” he says. “But when you see guys around you playing their best, knowing that you’ve had some input, that’s fulfilling.”

Despite the weight of the expectations on him, he remains grounded.

“I don’t really feed too much into my emotions. I get nervous, like anyone else; I have thoughts of doubt, but I try not to dwell on them.”

His journey hasn’t been without setbacks, particularly during the 2023 World Cup. “We went into that World Cup without people expecting too much from us, but we were hopeful,” he reflects ruefully.

Bavuma draws inspiration from cricketing legends Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara. “Sachin was technically perfect under pressure. And Brian Lara – he looked like me, like us.”

Beyond cricket, he is committed to inspiring the next generation. “Use the people around you for support. Hold onto a strong support system to keep you grounded,” he advises.

Bavuma’s journey proves that greatness isn’t just about physical dominance or pure talent –it’s also about grit, leadership, and staying true to yourself. IB

THE END OF SALAH’S ANFIELD FAIRYTALE?

The Egyptian Pharaoh (or Messi) has been a standout player this season, solidifying himself as a legend on the Kop and ensuring that the Reds are well on course to win their illustrious 20th league trophy.

Dewald Brevis, the young South African cricketer often likened to the legendary AB de Villiers, is rapidly carving out a reputation for himself that could see him make a formidable impact on the Proteas in T20 cricket. The Proteas selectors will soon be under pressure to tap Brevis’s vast potential.

Her influence extends beyond the playing court, uniting the team and inspiring them with her vision. With an innate understanding that leadership encompasses more than just the traditional responsibilities tied to the captain’s armband, Chawane aims to motivate her teammates through the highs and lows of competition.

Chawane assumed the captaincy from seasoned player Bongiwe Msomi at a time when the team was seeking to redefine its status in the international arena. Her approach to leadership has fostered an environment of camaraderie and determination, paving the way for a bright future for the Spar Proteas.

As the countdown begins for Cena’s final curtain, his legacy will be carved deeper into the annals of wrestling history

dark spots ACTIVELY TACKLE

HYPERPIGMENTATION, DARK MARKS, AND UNEVEN SKIN TONE ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON SKINCARE CONCERNS AMONG MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL ETHNICITIES. WHILE EXPOSURE TO THE SUN IS A LEADING CONTRIBUTING FACTOR, MANY OTHER FACTORS SUCH AS INFLAMMATION, HORMONAL CHANGES, AND GENETICS PLAY A ROLE, TOO.

Dark marks may be stubborn and won’t disappear overnight, but with the proper knowledge and tools, there are ways to significantly improve their appearance and achieve a more even skin tone.

1. Determine what’s causing them. It’s important to find out why you have dark marks, as the root cause will determine your treatment plan. If you have dark marks because of hormonal changes, for example, the hormonal fluctuations would need to be addressed in addition to treating your skin topically. Visiting your skincare therapist, dermatologist, or medical practitioner for a diagnosis is critical to addressing the concern.

2. Use sun protection products daily. When it’s exposed to the sun, our skin produces melanin (pigment) as a means of protection, which is why we get a sun tan. If your skin produces too much melanin, it may result in dark marks, and if you have existing dark marks, further sun exposure will darken them. It is essential to apply a broad–spectrum sun protection product every single day and to reapply it throughout the day when spending time outdoors.

3. Be sun-savvy.

Applying a broad-spectrum SPF product daily might not be enough to prevent dark marks from forming or darkening. Avoid the sun during peak hours (10am to 2 pm), wear a wide-brim hat and sunglasses to protect your face, and cover up with a light kaftan or sarong when outdoors.

4. Don’t squeeze spots.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is characterised by dark marks left after a breakout or pimple has healed. While you might be tempted to pick at or squeeze a spot, it is best to leave it alone. Squeezing may lead to infection, scarring and dreaded dark marks.

5. Follow a targeted skincare regimen. Certain skincare ingredients help lighten dark marks and brighten the skin. These include:

Vitamin C: A potent antioxidant, vitamin C helps fade existing dark marks and inhibits the activity of the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for the production of melanin. It also increases the skin’s radiance.

Vitamin A: Also known as retinol, it increases cellular turnover, which is essential for maintaining a youthful complexion and for naturally exfoliating melanin. Vitamin A also reduces the formation of breakouts, leading to fewer PIH marks.

Niacinamide: A form of vitamin B3, niacinamide can lighten dark marks by inhibiting melanin production.

Patience is key when tackling dark marks. They might not disappear overnight, but with persistence you will see a significant improvement in their appearance. IB

TO KEEP THAT GLOW IN 2025 5 Beauty Tips

GLOWING SKIN ISN’T JUST ABOUT GOOD GENETICS, IT’S ABOUT SMART SKINCARE CHOICES AND CONSISTENCY. HERE ARE MY TOP FIVE BEAUTY TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR SKIN GLOWING.

Stay Hydrated: Drink Your Water

Hydration is the foundation of glowing skin. Drinking enough water helps flush out toxins, maintain elasticity, and keep skin plump. If plain water isn’t your thing, try infusing it with lemon, cucumber, or berries for an extra boost. You can also up your hydration game with water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, and leafy greens.

Double Cleanse Your Face

Cleansing properly is key to preventing breakouts and dullness. Double cleansing, which involves starting with an oil-based cleanser to break down makeup and SPF, followed by a gentle foaming or cream cleanser, ensures your skin is thoroughly clean without stripping its natural moisture. This simple habit keeps your skin clear, fresh, and prepped for the rest of your routine.

Use Skincare Products with Peptides & Ceramides

Your skincare should work for you. Peptides help boost collagen production, keeping skin firm and youthful, while ceramides strengthen the skin barrier, preventing moisture loss. Look for serums and moisturisers that contain these powerhouse ingredients to keep your skin plump, resilient, and well-nourished.

Incorporate a Hydrating Face Mist

A good face mist is a skincare and makeup essential. It refreshes your skin, adds a dewy glow, and keeps hydration levels balanced throughout the day. I love The Drip by Lelive - it’s lightweight, nourishing, and perfect for setting makeup or reviving tired skin. Keep a bottle in

your bag for a quick pick-me-up.

Don’t Forget SPF (I’m a Sunscreen Advocate!)

Sunscreen is a non-negotiable. UV exposure is one of the leading causes of premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, and skin damage. A broadspectrum SPF 30 or higher should be part ofyour daily routine, rain or shine, indoors or outdoors. Reapply throughout the day, especially if you’re spending time in the sun. Your future self will thank you!

Skincare in 2025 is all about hydration, protection, and using products containing effective ingre-dients. Stick to these tips, and your skin will remain glowing, healthy, and radiant all year round! IB

DESCRIPTION Gel for dry skin. INDICATION Significantly increases skin moisturisation. PRESENTATION Orange / pink gel. FORMULATION Gel with 84% occlusive ingredients, 13% humectants and 3% water. INGREDIENTS Paraffinum Liquidum, Isopropyl Palmitate, Triisononanoin, Glycerin, Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate, Isopropyl Myristate, Aqua, Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride, Isostearyl Isostearate, C26-28 Alkyl Dimethicone, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter, Sodium Lactate, Urea, Gluconolactone, Sodium PCA, Sodium Hyaluronate, Octyldodecyl PCA, Sucrose Laurate, Sucrose Stearate, Lactic Acid, Lanolin, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone / Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Bisabolol, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Silica, Glycine Soja Oil, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Niacinamide, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Tocopherol, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil, Calendula Officinalis Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, Parfum, Farnesol, Limonene, Linalool, CI 17200. DRY SKIN CLINICAL TRIAL Trial centre: Complife Italia S.r.l, Italy. Objective: A clinical evaluation to test the efficacy of Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel in improving skin moisturisation. Sample: Subjects: 40 healthy females with Fitzpatrick skin types II-V and clinically showing dry / very dry skin (grade II-IV) at the level of the outer lower legs, and Corneometer values of less than 40 at enrolment. Test site: test product applied to one entire lower leg of all subjects. Age of participants: 40–65. Methodology: Split-body, evaluator-blinded, randomised and controlled clinical-instrumental study. Subjects participated in an initial screening evaluation followed by a 7-day dry down period, a 28-day treatment period and a 3-day follow up period (regression). During the dry down period, and throughout the study, subjects washed their legs twice daily with Dove Beauty Bar. Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel was then applied twice daily to the assigned lower leg, the opposite leg remained untreated. Clinical assessments and instrumental evaluations were conducted at screening, baseline and on days 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 21, 28, 29, 30 and 31. The control untreated site was also evaluated at all time points. The assessment was as follows: participants were clinically graded for dryness (on a scale from 0–5) by a trained visual evaluator. Quantitative measurement of skin hydration was by Corneometer. Quantitative measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), as an indicator of barrier function, was by Tewameter. Result: Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel determined a statistically significant improvement in skin moisturisation, barrier function and the appearance of dry skin (clinical grading of dryness) at each experimental monitored check, both compared to baseline values and to the untreated (control) area. For clinical grading of dryness, statistically significant improvements were evident in 62% of participants from day 1, and greater than 85% of participants from day 3 onwards. From day 21, 100% of participants showed an improvement. At day 28 participants showed over 3.5 times the improvement in clinical grading score noted at day 1. After 28 days of use, 100% of participants showed a significant increase in skin moisturisation, with the extent of the improvement more than double that at day 1. Similarly, after 28 days of use 82% of participants showed a significant decrease in TEWL, with the extent of the improvement more than 5.5 times that of day 1. The effectiveness of Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel in improving skin moisturisation, barrier function and the appearance of dry skin was also confirmed in the 3 days of follow-up, when product use had been discontinued. SENSITIVE SKIN TEST Trial centre: Complife Italia S.r.l, Italy. Objective: To assess the potential of Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel to cause skin irritation. Sample: Subjects: 30 participants; 28 female and 2 male, all with sensitive skin according to the lactic acid stinging test. Age of participants: 18–70. Methodology: Controlled study. Two areas were evaluated: an area to which a negative control was applied (demineralised water) and an area to which Bio Dry Skin Gel was applied. Test products were applied to participants’ back region for a period of 48 hours using a Finn Chamber . Skin reactions were evaluated under the supervision of a dermatologist, to assess primary skin irritation at 15 minutes, 1 hour and 24 hours after patch removal. Skin reactions were rated on a scale from 0–4 (with 0 being no erythema, oedema, or other types of skin irritation, and 4 being serious erythema and oedema, indicating dark red appearance and extended swelling beyond the application area). Result: The skin tolerability of Bio Dry Skin Gel was deemed ‘non-irritating’. NON-COMEDOGENIC TEST Trial centre: Complife Italia S.r.l, Italy. Objective: To assess the comedogenic potential of Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel. Sample: Subjects: 20 participants; 18 female and 2 male, with acne prone skin. Age of participants: 18–65. Methodology: Controlled study. The product was applied on a disk of filter paper to the upper back region of participants. Patches were left in place for 48 to 72 hours, removed and applied again. A total of 12 patches were applied for 4 consecutive weeks. Three areas were evaluated by comparing a negative control (demineralised water), the test product (Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel) and a positive control (lanolin alcohol, a known comedogenic product). Skin reactions were clinically evaluated under the supervision of a dermatologist 15 minutes after the removal of each patch to compare the presence of comedones before and after each product application. Result: Bio Dry Skin Gel was found to be non-comedogenic. The area to which Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel was applied showed no significant difference to the negative control area. The positive control induced acne. OCCLUSIVITY STUDY Trial centre: Rigano Laboratories, Milan, Italy. Objective: To experimentally determine the occlusivity of Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel and thereby its ability to help the skin to retain moisture by reducing TEWL. Methodology: Known quantities of water were placed in beakers covered with a semipermeable membrane called Vitro-Skin™, which mimics the surface properties of human skin. Product was applied to the membrane and the rate of water loss from the beakers was measured over time. This was compared with the rate of water loss from control beakers, without any product on the membrane. Result: The water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) test methodology is a standard test for measuring the occlusivity of products. A reduction in the WVTR value indicates that a particular formulation is occlusive. Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel was shown to reduce the WVTR values statistically compared to the untreated control when applied to the Vitro-Skin™ membrane. This in vitro result suggests that Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel will help the skin to retain moisture in vivo and thereby help relieve the signs and symptoms of dry skin. APPLICATION How to apply: Apply a small amount of Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel to dry skin as required. In the case of persistent dry skin, it is recommended that it be applied twice daily, morning and evening. The product was specifically formulated for the body, however it may also be used on the face. Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel is intended for topical cosmetic application only. It should not be applied to an open wound or broken skin. Avoid contact with eyes. If product gets into eyes, rinse thoroughly with water. Keep out of reach of children. How long to use: Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel’s clinical trial has been performed over a four-week period, allowing the performance of the product to be assessed over time. Statistical analysis shows a significant improvement in the appearance of the skin after as little as 24 hours and that this improvement is maintained for the duration of the trial. Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel may however be used on an ongoing basis for its moisturising and skin-nourishing properties, making it a part of a daily skincare routine. Use in conjunction with a skincare routine: For maximum absorption, Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel should be applied to cleansed skin. If applying a sun protection lotion or other cream only do so once Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel has been completely absorbed into the skin. For all over body use, apply Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel after showering or bathing. Use during pregnancy: Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel is safe for use during pregnancy. Vitamin A and pregnancy: Women are usually recommended to limit vitamin A nutritional supplements during pregnancy and therefore may have concerns around using skincare products with vitamin A. Any substance applied to the skin is only harmful if it is present at levels above its toxicological threshold. Because the skin provides a significant barrier to penetration, only a fraction of topically applied vitamin A enters the body. The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has evaluated vitamin A and its esters, when used as cosmetic ingredients. The SCCS opinion is that the use of vitamin A in body lotions, up to the maximum concentration of 0.05% of retinol equivalent, is safe. The vitamin A present in the Bio-Oil® Dry Skin Gel formulation is at a level well below this maximum allowable concentration for a body lotion and can be used safely throughout pregnancy. Rosemary oil and pregnancy: Rosemary oil in high concentrations has been found to be an emmenagogue, meaning it has the ability to provoke menstruation and possibly induce

BEAUTY IS AN INSIDE JOB NOT SKIN DEEP!

DITCH THE SUPERFICIAL BEAUTY FIXES! BABALWA JEZI, CAPE TOWN-BASED LIFESTYLE, BEAUTY, AND FASHION INFLUENCER AND MOM, SHARES HER SECRETS FOR ACHIEVING RADIANT, GLOWING SKIN FROM THE INSIDE OUT, WITH A HOLISTIC APPROACH THAT COMBINES SELF-CARE, SKINCARE, AND SUN PROTECTION. GET READY TO GLOW FROM THE INSIDE OUT!

For social media influencer Babalwa Jezi (@babalwajezi), beauty is not just about using the right products or following the latest trends; it starts, she says, with taking care of her overall health and wellbeing. “This means getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated and managing stress. Prioritising self-care, and taking a holistic approach to skincare have helped me achieve a radiant, glowing complexion that leaves me feeling confident and beautiful. Self-care is essential for achieving true beauty and wellness.”

Babalwa says fruits like apples and pomegranate, as well as green leafy veg, all have a high water content, so you can get some of your RDA from those.

That said, taking care of one’s skin should be a top priority, too, because it is the “canvas” of your overall beauty routine, she insists. If you’re just starting out on your “beauty journey”, she advises: “Start by identifying your skin type and concerns, then choose products that are tailored to your needs. It is important to be patient and give your skin time to adjust to new products.” The four basic skin types are normal, dry, oily, and combination skin.

Everyone’s skin is different, says Babalwa, so it might take some trial and error to find the products and routine that work for you. Ultimately, she says, it helps to seek advice from skincare professionals or do your own research to learn more about skincare and how to achieve flawless skin. “When my skin is well-cared for, it provides a smooth, even surface for make-up to adhere to, allowing me to achieve a more natural, effortless make-up look.”

A good sunscreen is a non-negotiable under the African sun, says Babalwa. It helps protect the skin from UV damage that could lead to skin cancer, adding, “And I know this might sound cliched, but drinking water – about 2 litres daily – helps! Staying hydrated is essential for keeping my skin looking healthy and plump, and it helps flush out toxins and impurities that can affect the skin. Can’t drink that much? Babalwa says fruits such as watermelon, apples and pomegranate, as well as green leafy veg, all have a high water content, so you can get some of your RDA from those. Building a skincare routine that helps you achieve a flawless skin also remains a vital part of the holistic approach to beauty. Stay hydrated, and keep it holistic!!! IB

THE LIFESTYLE CONNECTION Your skin:

OUR SKIN IS THE BARRIER BETWEEN US AND THE MYRIAD PATHOGENS IN THE ATMOSPHERE. DAILY HABITS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS EXERT THEIR INFLUENCE. SO WHETHER YOU SPEND ALL YOUR TIME IN THE CITY, OR ENJOY YOUR WEEKENDS IN NATURE, FOR BETTER OR WORSE, YOUR LIFESTYLE WILL IMPACT THE HEALTH OF YOUR SKIN. FORTUNATELY, DR BRADLEY WAGEMAKER, MEDICAL DIRECTOR AT LAMELLE RESEARCH LABORATORIES, HAS YOU COVERED, WITH THE DAILY HABITS THAT HELP RATHER THAN HINDER!

According to Dr Wagemaker, healthy habits are the foundation of beautiful and healthy skin, as is the confidence that results from embracing your unique self.

“We should all strive to celebrate our natural beauty and embrace our authentic selves, and taking good care of our skin is the first step.” He notes that the appearance of our skin says a lot about our health, too.

“Nourish your skin from the inside out by drinking lots of water, eating fresh foods, and limiting your caffeine, alcohol, fast food, and sugar intake.”

Eating fresh foods, fruit and vegetables provides essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, all of which protect and nourish your skin and support overall health. They also help boost collagen production to keep your skin firm, and support overall skin health.

Regular exercise will help you achieve a radiant glow. Just remember that if you’re exercising in the outdoors, an SPF is a must.

Skin concerns are on the rise due to several

environmental and lifestyle factors, says Dr Wagemaker. “But remember,” he says, “your skin issue is unique to yourself; adopting a skincare regimen that caters to your specific needs is essential. We recommend speaking to a professional about a personalised solution rather than following the latest trend or trying a product simply because it’s new.”

Lamelle therapists are expertly trained to analyse your skin, and can recommend cuttingedge professional as well as home-care solutions to help you achieve a flawless complexion that embraces your unique beauty – whether it’s the sprinkling of freckles on your face, or the shape of your nose.

Now that’s a beauty-positive approach we hope to see more of!

Good skin and lifestyle checklist:

• Eat a healthy diet and do moderate exercise.

• Have a good skincare routine.

BLACK COFFEE COUTURE

ISN’T IT AMAZING HOW INSPIRATION, WHETHER IT’S FOR FASHION, ART, OR EVEN FRAGRANCE, CAN COME AT YOU FROM ANYWHERE? SEEING A PLANE FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE, FINDING A LEAF WITH A UNIQUE SHAPE… THAT’S THE MAGIC OF CREATIVITY: INSPIRATION IS DRAWN FROM LITERALLY ANYTHING. IT’S CERTAINLY TRUE FOR JACQUES VAN DER WATT, FOUNDER AND CREATIVE OF BLACK COFFEE FASHION, WHOSE INNOVATIVE YET WEARABLE DESIGNS HAVE BEEN A HIT WITH CELEBS AND STREET FASHIONISTAS FOR DECADES. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM BETWEEN SHOWS…

What inspired the name Black Coffee for your brand?

It was inspired by the 1948 Jazz standard first sung by Sarah Vaughan and made even more famous in 1960 by jazz luminary, Ella Fitzgerald. It speaks about late nights, hard work and determination.

And all of that embodies your brand. How do you first approach a collection, starting from the ideation phase?

A strong concept is always at the core of each collection. The process varies. Sometimes the concept reveals itself easily, at other times I find it after doing some research.

Some draw inspiration from nature, others from city lights, or even the seemingly absurd. Has your source of inspiration evolved since the brand’s inception?

I usually have more than one theme for each collection. I like to work with a narrative that underpins everything, but I also search for a

construction style that is unique or distinctive to each range.

Very distinctive, I must say. What Inspired your most recent collection?

I was reading up on floating cities. Ultra-modern developments are popping up around the world. I was inspired by the futuristic nature of these cities and imagined how we would dress if our environment was that modern.

Wow! So, how do you ensure your designs remain distinctively Black Coffee?

Everything I’ve designed before informs what I am currently doing, so a common thread is always visible.

Your designs feature strong geometric elements – balancing high fashion with wearability beyond magazine shoots and stages. How do you achieve this?

Distinctive style is something South Africans have in abundance. Many of our clients prefer a bold print and silhouette.

Fashion trends you see dominating 2025?

Clean, strong silhouettes in neutrals and

bold colour. Trends will always be important, but individual style has become much more prevalent.

Noticeably so… What’s the best fashion tip?

Don’t try too hard.

Beyond the fashion, can you give us two fundamental principles for building a brand that stands the test of time?

A strong relationship with your client base, and creating a unique in-store experience.

Three standout pieces that instantly elevate a wardrobe to a high-fashion standard?

A bold accessory with cultural authenticity; a great pair of statement trousers with an exaggerated silhouette, and an oversized coat. Even in summer, a thin top layer with architectural impact can elevate any outfit.

Fashion or style?

Definitely style.

Luxe Leather Craft: GENERATION TO GENERATION

LEATHERSMITH HANSPETER WINKLMAYR, WHOSE HANDS TURN LEATHER INTO LUXE BAGS, PURSES AND OTHER FABULOUS PRODUCTS, IS THE CURRENT INCARNATION OF A FAMILY LEGACY HANDED DOWN THE GENERATIONS.

What made your family develop a passion for luxury leather?

It was after a long, and terrible war; there was a demand from clients for better, more sophisticated, and luxurious products to match a more positive outlook.

How has Winklmayr Leathercraft managed to stay successful in the industry for so long?

Relationships – with suppliers; with the people who dedicate years of their lives to working with us on our mission, and relationships with clients

both new and existing, some of whom I got to know shortly after my arrival in South Africa in 1981.

Relationships are so vital… How do you ensure that each handbag and accessory you create has a unique touch?

My family believes the secret is in the handle –and the handling – of a product. At Winklmayr, each product we make has a discernible feel, and a substance that is unique to the touch. It’s created through the way we work with the leather and what lies beneath the observable surface of the bags. This was hammered into me by my

grandfather, Johann Hans Winklmayr, from the time I was little: “If it feels good in your hand, 50% of the bag is sold.”

You work with crocodile and ostrich leather... where do you source it, and what is your approach to ethical sourcing?

Our skins are sourced in South Africa and Southern Africa, from the same enterprises that supply the most famous brands based in France. Our approach is to work with the best people we can and the ones we trust to deliver on the promise of quality. Each skin is a reflection of the life the animal has lived. You cannot get a quality skin from an animal that was not looked after during its life.

That’s interesting. What steps did you take to position Winklmayr as a luxury brand?

We work within the ever-changing boundaries nature provides. This includes scarcity in supply and natural characteristics in the skins. Born out of a respect for the precious materials we work with, we see it as our calling to add value to the skins through our workmanship. This approach to beneficiation does not result merely in a luxury product, but a premium product that is accessible by those who hold similar values to us. We literally craft exotic leather valuables that our clients will be able to cherish, and offer a lifetime warranty on our products.

Do you see your craft as purely a business, or does it hold a deeper meaning for you?

It definitely holds a deeper meaning for me. I am a maker. I craft the items that I dream about and truly believe I am blessed to be able to immerse myself in the craft. The products we create find their buyers and that provides us with the sustenance to continue to push the boundaries of that craft – every day.

How do you maintain the brand’s high standards of durability and quality?

For me, it’s been an ongoing quest for zero defect and perfection; that’s provided the energy to keep developing, keep innovating and never accepting the status quo.

Many luxury brands extend their impact beyond business to support communities and the environment. Is this something Winklmayr is focusing on?

We are very conscious of the communities that surround us and work in every way we can to support them. This does not mean an exclusive focus, as we balance the needs of our clients (preferences for certain finishes, affordability, etc…) with what we can do to support our local communities. Wherever we can, we prefer to buy and make local. In every way we can, we minimise waste by finding creative uses for the leather that would otherwise be left behind, so there is very little waste product coming from our processes.

How do you make Winklmayr leather products accessible to the international market?

We market our products online to an international audience and offer our products through select retailers that are able to connect with the tourists who visit South Africa. Even so, we operate in the premium segment of the market and are naturally accessible in the international market through the beneficial exchange rate environment of our current economy.

What are the key things people should know about the luxury leather business?

The luxury leather business consists of a number of key elements: sustainable farming, the necessary care taken by the tanneries, and finally, the love that goes into the actual crafting. This is finally topped off with the pleasure of the customer using these products. IB

More than just a headache

MIGRAINES AREN’T JUST BAD HEADACHES – THEY’RE COMPLEX, OFTEN DEBILITATING NEUROLOGICAL EVENTS. UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MIGRAINES CAN HELP WITH TREATMENT.

Debilitating pain, nausea, and sensory sensitivities - migraines can be overwhelming. Neurologist Dr Michael Huth of Netcare Linksfield Hospital shares his expertise on the most common types and offers guidance on managing them.

1. Migraine without aura

Characterised by throbbing pain (often on one side), nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound, classic migraines can last 4-72 hours. “Some people experience migraines sporadically, while others suffer from chronic migraines, meaning they have headaches for at least 15 days a month,” says Dr Huth.

2. Migraine with aura

“Before or during the headache phase, people might experience visual disturbances, tingling sensations, or even trouble speaking,” Dr Huth explains. These aura symptoms usually last between 20 to 60 minutes before the headache sets in.

3. Chronic migraine

For those who suffer from migraines over 15 days a month, the line between headache and ‘normal’ days blurs. According to Dr Huth, frequent and disabling migraines often require preventive treatments.

4. Hemiplegic migraine

Moderate exercise is beneficial, but over-exertion can trigger attacks.

This rare type of migraine can mimic a stroke, causing temporary weakness or paralysis on one side of the body. Fortunately, it’s often treatable, says Dr Huth.

Managing migraines

Dr Huth’s top tips:

• Stick to a routine: avoid disruptions in sleep and meals.

• Manage stress: try yoga, meditation, or deep breathing.

• Exercise wisely: moderate activity is key.

• Avoid food triggers: caffeine, alcohol, processed meats, and artificial sweeteners

• Consider medication: preventive and acute treatments are available

“If migraines are disrupting your life, speak to a doctor for a personalised treatment plan,” advises Dr Huth. IB

Your gut IS RUNNING THE SHOW

THAT NERVOUS BUTTERFLY FEELING OR SINKING SENSE OF DREAD? IT’S MORE THAN JUST A FIGURE OF SPEECH. ACCORDING TO GUT EXPERT AND AUTHOR JACKI MCEWEN-POWELL, YOUR GUT IS SENDING YOU IMPORTANT SIGNALS – AND IT’S TIME TO LISTEN.

Ever had that gut feeling about something? Turns out, your gut might actually know more than you think. Researchers have found that the trillions of microbes in your digestive system don’t just help with digestion; they also have a lot to say about your mood, cognitive function, and overall brain health. In fact, your gut is so influential, it’s often called your ‘second brain’.

The gut is like a garden (but with superpowers)

According to Jacki McEwen-Powell, certified integrative nutrition health coach and author of Well Now: Reclaim Your Life from Ulcerative Colitis and Get Well Now: Heal Your Gut to Transform Your Life, “Think of your gut microbiome as a thriving garden,” Jacki explains. “When the soil is healthy and filled with a variety of plants (beneficial bacteria, in this case), everything flourishes.” A diverse and balanced gut microbiome can keep your mood stable, your thoughts clear, and your emotions in check.

How exactly does your gut talk to your brain?

Meet the gut-brain axis! “One of the key players in this system is the vagus nerve – a long nerve that runs from your brainstem all the way down to your abdomen,” Jacki says. “Think of the vagus nerve as the roots of your garden, connecting everything underground.” These roots help pass crucial information between your gut and brain, influencing everything from mood regulation to sleep patterns. If your gut microbes are in harmony, all is well. But if they’re off balance? Expect scrambled signals, poor sleep, and a case of the grumps.

When the weeds take over Dysbiosis (aka when your gut is out of whack) can be a major mood-wrecker. “When your garden

is overtaken by weeds (harmful bacteria), they start to crowd out the healthy plants and steal vital nutrients,” Jacki explains. “This imbalance triggers inflammation that can spread throughout the body, including the brain.” Translation: gut troubles can lead to heightened anxiety, sluggish thinking, and even increase the risk of neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

How to cultivate a healthy gut (and a happy brain)

So, how do you keep your gut in top shape? According to Jacki, the key is to treat your gut like the thriving ecosystem it’s meant to be.

• Eat like a gardener: Load up on fibre, fermented foods, and polyphenol-rich plant foods (apple, berries, broccoli, ginkgo biloba, and ginger, among others) to feed the good bacteria.

• Ditch the junk: Processed foods, refined sugars, and artificial additives are like chemical fertilisers – disrupting your gut’s delicate balance.

• Manage stress: Chronic stress is the equivalent of drought conditions, leaving your gut vulnerable. Meditation, mindfulness, and time in nature can help restore balance.

• Move your body: Exercise isn’t just good for your waistline – it also supports gut health and brain function.

• Prioritise sleep: Quality sleep helps keep your gut bacteria thriving and your brain sharp.

Jacki’s books dive even deeper into the power of gut health and how it can transform your life. If you’re looking to feel more energised, think clearer, and boost your overall wellbeing, it all starts with your gut. So go ahead – nurture your inner garden and let your brain reap the benefits! IB

The Whole30 Diet

PROMISING A TOTAL RESET OF YOUR EATING HABITS IN JUST 30 DAYS, THE WHOLE30 DIET HAS BEEN HAILED AS A GAME-CHANGER FOR MANY. BUT WHAT EXACTLY DOES IT INVOLVE, AND IS IT REALLY WORTH THE HYPE?

If you’ve ever wanted to overhaul your eating habits but also secretly feared turning into someone who only eats quinoa and sadness, the Whole30 diet might be for you. It’s not a weight-loss plan, or some obscure cleanse where you have to drink cayenne pepper and regret for two weeks. Here, registered dietitian Henriette Joubert of The Nutrition House breaks it all down for us.

What is the Whole30 diet?

The Whole30 diet is a 30-day elimination programme designed to help you identify food sensitivities and improve your relationship with food. There’s no calorie counting or portion control involved. Instead, you cut out a long list of foods, including added sugars, alcohol, grains, legumes, dairy, baked goods, and processed foods. After the 30 days, there’s a 15-day reintroduction phase, where you gradually add back certain food groups one at a time to see how your body reacts.

“Whole30 is based on the idea that a month is long enough to help change food-based habits while giving your body a reset,” explains Joubert. “The goal is to focus on whole, natural foods and learn what works best for you.” The tried and tested medical nutrition therapy is a four- to sixweek Low-FODMAP diet.

The benefits?

Many participants report feeling more energised, less bloated, and even seeing improvements in skin health. Joubert points out that “eliminating processed foods and takeaways naturally leads to benefits like more stable energy levels, improved digestion, even better sleep.” Plus, for those who struggle with food sensitivities, the reintroduction phase can be an eye-opener.

Sounds great, right? But cutting out so many foods can be a shock to the system. “It’s been reported that cravings, especially for sugar, can be intense in the beginning,” says Joubert. “Some people also experience caffeine withdrawal headaches. It helps to stay hydrated.”

What happens after the 30 days?

Foods like dairy and gluten-free grains are slowly reintroduced. However, warns Joubert: “If you’ve cut something out and then suddenly bring it back, you might experience symptoms you wouldn’t have had otherwise. Supporting gut health with probiotics and fibre-rich foods can help make the transition smoother.”

The verdict?

While Whole30 can be a really useful tool for understanding how different foods affect your body, Joubert urges caution when it comes to restrictive eating. “Your body is already well-equipped to detox itself. Whole30 isn’t necessarily a magic fix, but it can be a structured way to build awareness around food choices. Just remember, a balanced and individualised approach is key. I don’t support restrictions of food, except for medical reasons.”

One thing’s for sure… what you eat matters! If you’re curious, it’s always best to consult a registered dietitian first. IB

Patrick Lambie’s ultimate

AT-HOME WORKOUT

THE SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY ICON SHARES HIS TOP FIVE EXERCISES FOR STRENGTH AND RECOVERY.

ormer Springbok rugby player Patrick Lambie has crafted the perfect at-home workout – simple, effective, and requiring zero equipment. From his newly built home at Seaton Estate, Lambie proves that you don’t need a gym to stay in top shape.

Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated. With consistency and the right movements, you can stay strong wherever you are – even in your own home.

Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated. With consistency movements, you can stay strong wherever you are your own home.

After undergoing an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in the knee, Lambie has focused on strengthening his glutes, hamstrings, and core. “These exercises have been key to my ongoing recovery and overall fitness. They’re easy to do anywhere, and they get real results,” he shares.

His five essential exercises

1. The full burpee – a heart-pumping essential

Start standing, then drop onto your haunches and place your hands on the ground. Kick your legs back into a push-up position, perform a push-up, then spring back to your feet and jump high with your hands reaching for the sky. “It’s a full-body burner that builds strength and endurance,” says Lambie.

2. Single-leg glute bridge – fire up those hamstrings

Lie on your back with one heel on the ground and the other leg extended straight. Push your hips up using the grounded leg, squeezing your glutes at the top. “This one’s great for hamstring activation and overall stability,” Lambie explains.

3. Single-leg deadlift – the balance builder

Stand on one leg, hinge at the hips, and extend your other leg straight behind you as you reach forward. Engage your core to maintain balance. “It strengthens your hamstrings and challenges your stability,” he notes.

4. Squat hold – the silent burner

Drop into a squat position as if sitting on an invisible chair, and hold. This move builds lowerbody endurance and control. “It looks simple, but it burns,” says Lambie, with a grin.

5. Mountain climbers – the core crusher

In a push-up position, drive your knees towards your elbows one at a time in a slow-paced, windscreen wiper motion. This move works the core, shoulders, and abs. “The slower the better. It’s an absolute must for controlling core strength,” he adds.

These five exercises, done in a circuit, offer a complete, intense workout that builds strength, stability, and endurance.

Lambie’s advice? “Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated. With consistency and the right movements, you can stay strong wherever you are – even in your own home.” IB

A REGAL RIDE AWAITS – WITH THE

Ford Everest Sport

IMAGINE WAKING UP EACH MORNING WITH THE CONFIDENCE OF A MONARCH. THE FORD EVEREST SPORT 2023 NOT ONLY EVOKES THAT ROYAL EXPERIENCE, IT ALSO EFFECTIVELY DELIVERS IT, MAKING ITS OCCUPANTS FEEL LIKE SOVEREIGNS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. THOUGH IT’S BEEN AROUND A FEW YEARS, INBOUND SOUTH AFRICA’S TIME SPENT WITH THE SEVEN-SEATER SUV CONFIRMS ITS STATUS AS A GREAT CHOICE IN TODAY’S COMPETITIVE AUTOMOTIVE LANDSCAPE.

Meet ‘Eve’ - the Ford Everest Sport

First off, let’s talk aesthetics. The new Everest is an absolute showstopper, embodying the essence of a premium American SUV you might typically see gracing the silver screen. Its bold exterior design, front grille and striking LED headlights, accentuated by sleek lines and a sturdy stance,

demand attention on the road. And that’s not even counting the electrochromatic side view mirrors that automatically close when you lock the vehicle!

But few components evoke as much passion and pride as alloy wheels, particularly those bearing the Ford emblem. For car enthusiasts, these 18-inch

wheels represent more than just prime function; they are a celebration of craftsmanship and individuality, earning their rightful place in the hearts of many owners.

Characterised by their lightweight construction and sleek designs, alloy wheels offer both style and performance, making them a favourite for drivers seeking to elevate their vehicle’s characteristics. Ford stands out in the market with unique rims that aren’t just visually striking, but are engineered to enhance driving dynamics. The allure of these rims runs deep, providing a sense of prestige that resonates with owners of Ford vehicles across South Africa. Potholes don’t exist in Eve’s world.

If you can’t appreciate just how impressive this vehicle looks, it might be time for you to visit the optometrist! The blacked-out badges on this sports model add just the right touch of sophistication, making it visually stunning from every angle. But here are a few reasons why this vehicle continues to be a favourite among car enthusiasts.

Push 2 Start

Under the hood, this diesel beast is powered by a robust 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine. With an impressive torque of 500 Nm at just 2000 rpm,and a power output of 154 kW, this SUV doesn’t shy away from delivering exceptional performance.

A smooth 10-speed automatic transmission, means driving the Everest on the freeway feels effortless; at high speeds it cruises with low revs, which translates to excellent fuel efficiency of about 7.5 L/100 km. Whether you’re navigating

city streets or embarking on long-distance adventures, the ease of driving is simply delightful.

The Ford Everest Sport comes with drive modes like Normal, Eco, Tow, Slippery, Mud/Ruts, and Sand, and it is equipped with a premium engine, while the vehicle’s advanced suspension and powertrain work in tandem to deliver a smooth and responsive ride whether you’re on tar roads or conquering rugged landscapes.

Comfortably luxe interiors…

Step inside, and Eve welcomes you with its blend of sophistication and practicality. The light roof lining transforms the ambience within the vehicle, creating a spacious and airy feel.

Other notable features are the overhead console, which elegantly combines convenience and style, and the sun visors, which now boast illuminated vanity mirrors for both the driver and front seat passenger.

One of my favourite features of the Everest is its colossal 12-inch infotainment screen. Imagine having a mini-TV in the dashboard! It’s not just

about size; it’s packed with functionality. From air conditioning controls and integrated navigation to wireless smartphone integration perfect for your iPhone, everything is at your fingertips. A big bonus, too, is the wireless charging pad and the multiple multimedia controls on the steering wheel.

A surprising feature is the sketch function; it’s a unique and fun add-on that’ll keep the kids happily occupied drawing pictures in the SUV while you’re starting the fire for the braai.

Safe in the arms of the ‘Everest’

Moving beyond looks and performance, the Everest boasts innovative ergonomics that genuinely enhance user experience. Instead of traditional door handles, the Everest has thoughtfully placed grab handles that allow you to open the doors with ease – simple yet ingenious.

On the safety front, the Everest excels with a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety features, including anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and hill launch assist, ensuring that you and your loved one’s travel in style while staying secure.

A noteworthy highlight is the impressive 7-seat capacity configuration. The second-row seating configuration of this vehicle is particularly impressive, offering a 60/40 split that allows for easy reclining, tip-and-slide mechanisms, and fold-flat options.

The third row seating features a practical 50/50-fold-flat system, granting users the choice of transporting more gear or additional passengers with minimal fuss. All in all, comfort doesn’t take a backseat in this model either. Both the driver and passenger seats boast an 8-way

power adjustment system, with options to slide, recline, adjust height, and set lumbar support. The boot space might be small, but everything else makes up for it! After all, Eve is all about her space.

A Family Affair

The Ford Everest Sport is more than just a vehicle; it’s an experience that blends luxury, safety, and practicality for families. With ample seating for seven, and an impressive towing capacity, it’s perfect for both everyday errands and adventurous getaways. From its striking design to its innovative features, the Everest makes you feel like king of the road.

If you’re in the market for an SUV that truly encapsulates power, elegance, and functionality, look no further than the 2023 Ford Everest Sport. Your kingdom awaits, so buckle up and let the adventure begin! IB

THE SARDINE RUN

THE CHANGE OF SEASON IS AN EXCITING TIME ON THE KZN SOUTH COAST, WITH THE COOLER TEMPERATURES BRINGING THE ANNUAL MARINE PHENOMENON – THE SARDINE RUN! THIS ANNUAL SPECTACLE IS A TREAT FOR VISITORS TO THE REGION, MAKING WINTER THE ULTIMATE GETAWAY ON THE KZN SOUTH COAST.

Dr Ryan Daly, Marine Scientist at Oceanographic Research Institute, says they’re hoping for another good Sardine Run this year: “We have had relatively good runs over the past few years and I expect this coming year to be the same. The timing and size of the run can be influenced by so many factors – from sea temperature to sardine stock size and more – so it’s difficult to predict, but we will be monitoring

the situation closely and keeping visitors updated on the progress.”

Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), adds that the tourism sector is ready to welcome the influx of visitors keen to experience the Sardine Run firsthand: “Our Blue Flag beaches and year-round subtropical climate means that even in winter, the KZN South Coast is a great holiday getaway

– and the Sardine Run makes it extra special. We wanted to share with first-time visitors some of the reasons why this is an event not to be missed. Now’s the time to plan your Sardine Run getaway!”

1. IT’S A WORLD-FAMOUS PHENOMENON

The Sardine Run is known as ‘The Greatest Shoal on Earth’ because of the breathtaking vision of billions of silver sardines migrating along the coastline – attracting a feeding frenzy of predators, among them seabirds, sharks, dolphins, and whales. It’s been the feature of many internationally made wildlife documentaries, and is unlike any other migration across the planet.

2. EXPERIENCE ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME MARINE ENCOUNTERS

While the sardines are impressive in themselves, the sheer volume of marine life accompanying them makes this an unmissable ocean event. Hungry seabirds dive from the skies, including gannets, terns and cormorants – making this a birdwatcher’s paradise. Dolphins, sharks, and even Bryde’s whales can be spotted rounding the sardines into bait balls before feasting on the silver fish. For visitors, marine encounters like this can be enjoyed from the shore, a boat, or even underwater, at one of the KZN South Coast’s top dive sites.

3. UNIQUE PHOTOGRAPHY OPPORTUNITIES

For underwater and wildlife photographers, there’s no time like the Sardine Run to capture that award-winning shot! The natural phenomenon provides unparalleled opportunities to photograph dramatic scenes of marine life in action. The scale of this incredible event makes for stunning visuals.

4. SEE THE ‘BLUE ECONOMY’ IN ACTION

The Sardine Run is not just a natural spectacle; it’s also an important economic driver for the entire KZN South Coast. Head to the shores to see local anglers netting sardines from the shore! Sardines are also used in many local dishes, giving tourists on the KZN South Coast the chance to enjoy the full flavour of the Sardine Run.

5. EXPLORE THE KZN SOUTH COAST

Visiting the KZN South Coast for the Sardine Run supports local communities and eco-tourism

initiatives. By participating in guided tours or staying in local accommodations, visitors are contributing to the sustainable development of the region. But there is so much more to explore –from the Blue Flag beaches (the highest number in KZN!) and coastal nature reserves, to the hinterland where hiking trails, adventure tours, and cultural experiences await, there’s so much to do on the KZN South Coast.

HOW CAN YOU WATCH THE SARDINE RUN?

The Sardine Run can be enjoyed in many different ways, with local tour operators running dedicated Sardine Run tours for an all-inclusive experience. Beyond these, visitors can catch the Sardine Run from:

Hungry seabirds dive from the skies, including gannets, terns

Boats: There are many charter boats that take guests out for a close-up experience of the annual Sardine Run. These include watching from the boat, snorkelling or scuba diving at Aliwal Shoal or Protea Banks. You can also go deep-sea fishing.

Viewing decks: Enjoy the action from the beaches or from one of the many whale viewing decks including Umtentweni Conservancy Whale Deck, Ramsgate Whale Deck, Impithi Beach Kiosk, and Umdoni Golf Club Whale Deck.

Eateries: The KZN South Coast has many oceanfacing pubs, bars and restaurants that serve delicious seafood meals with great views. Take in the Sardine Run while enjoying a cocktail or a delectable meal.

Skies: Get another perspective by checking out the Sardine Run from a microlight, helicopter, or light aircraft. There are experienced local pilots who organise flights over this ocean spectacle.

Oman – minarets, mountains and more

FROM MUSCAT’S BUSTLING MARKETS AND ORNATE MOSQUES TO THE DRAMATIC JEBEL AKHDAR MOUNTAINS, OMAN IS A TAPESTRY OF SIGHTS, SOUNDS, TASTES AND ACTIVITIES.

On the southeast corner of the Arabian Peninsula, the Sultanate of Oman is renowned for the warm welcome it gives visitors. Oman manages to combine its rich history and strong traditions with stunning natural landscapes, enchanting cities and a decidedly modern outlook.

Untouched by mass tourism, and without the crowds, skyscrapers and flashiness of its UAE neighbours, what sets Oman apart is

its commitment to authenticity. The country has resisted the pull of mass tourism, instead preserving its cultural and natural treasures. Whether you plan to explore ancient forts and castles, wander through markets and mosques, hike rugged mountain ranges, or visit some of the most stunning beaches on the Arabian Peninsula, Oman has so much to offer.

Luxury meets tradition

The Chedi Muscat boasts a legendary reputation in the Middle East. It was the first luxury hotel in

Oman and has become the benchmark for Omani hospitality, understated luxury and a relaxing atmosphere. The hotel is the perfect combination of central city location and gorgeous ocean views, swaying palm trees, acres of manicured green lawns, soothing water features, three azure swimming pools, and a private beach.

Muscat clings to the coastline, sitting between the Gulf of Oman and the towering Hajar Mountains. Surrounded by the shiny megacities of the Gulf, Oman favours tradition; in line with the general local belief that no building should be taller than a coconut tree, the country has banned skyscrapers in favour of a low-rise, whitewashed aesthetic.

Exploring Muscat

The best way to explore Muscat is to sign up for a private tour with a local guide like Hajer Al Muzayni, who has her finger on the pulse of the city. Aside from all the usual sights, she’ll show you some of the hidden gems and quirky corners that most tourists might miss – beachside BBQ street food, Omani coffee shops selling coffee flavoured with cardamom, saffron and rosewater (below), and the best places in town for halwa: a sweet, sticky, traditional Omani dessert that’s seasoned with rosewater, saffron and nuts.

Several sights should be on your list of things to see in Muscat. First is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (top right) which is in the heart of the city and dominates the skyline with its 91-metre minaret. This fabulous example of modern Islamic architecture can accommodate 20 000 worshippers and, with its ornate courtyards,

mosaics, prayer halls and beautifully manicured gardens, is one of the prettiest sights in the city.

Next, visit the Mutrah corniche. Stroll the 2km promenade, pause for cups of sweet cardamom tea, known locally as karak chai, and marvel at the Masjid Al Rasool Al A’dham (below), a blue-domed Shia Mosque that dates to the 15th century. Stop by the Mutrah Souq and wander the length of this covered market, shopping for souvenirs, jewellery, traditional Omani daggers, spices, incense, perfumes and more. Finally, head to Muscat’s white marble Opera House, the city’s hub of arts and culture, which regularly hosts musical performers from all around the world. You can simply admire the Opera House from the outside, take a guided tour of the inside, or attend a performance, whatever you prefer.

If you have time, head out of town and into the Hajar Mountains. The road winds its way through the outskirts of Muscat and the bustle of the city slowly gives way to the rugged vastness of the Omani desert. As you get closer to the mountains the landscape becomes even more dramatic, with jagged peaks rising against a clear blue sky. The air grows cooler as you climb higher, and you’ll pass small villages and traditional stone houses clinging precariously to the hillsides.

A mountain escape

After a two-hour journey, you’ll find the stunning Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort, perched on the edge of a steep canyon, 2 095 metres above sea level, with the most incredible views. One of the signature features of the resort is Diana’s Point, a glass-sided platform where you can gaze out over the canyon. Named after the late Princess of Wales, who visited in the ‘80’s, Diana’s Point is a wonderful spot for sundowners or a romantic dinner.

The resort’s layout is carefully designed around the rugged landscape and reflects the cultural heritage of Oman, with fortress-like stone walls, arched windows, and traditional elements such

as tadelakt plasterwork and zellij tiles. Pathways through the grounds lead to a luxurious spa and hammam, dining areas, and secluded spots perfect for stargazing and quiet contemplation.

Explore the mountains on foot, right from the resort. Hike down rocky paths to the nearby small villages scattered along the sides of the ravine. These had once been inhabited by farmers and their families, but are now mostly abandoned, as the inhabitants moved to a new, nearby town, attracted by an easier life. Many have retained their houses in the village, though, and still visit to attend to their crops and maintain the ancient al falaj irrigation system, which keeps their crops and fruit trees thriving.

From tradition to modernity, Oman has it all. Welcoming people, and wonderful things to see and do. This increasingly popular destination should definitely be on your travel bucket list. IB

AND A THRIVING FUTURE Furniture, followers

IN THE WORLD OF SMALL BUSINESSES, THE OLD WAYS OF MARKETING JUST DON’T CUT IT ANYMORE. GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN EXPENSIVE ADS AND GLOSSY BROCHURES WERE THE ONLY WAY TO CONNECT WITH CUSTOMERS. NOW, IT’S ALL ABOUT AUTHENTIC, RELATABLE CONTENT THAT TELL A STORY. AND IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO MAKE THAT WORK, IT’S JARED FYNN, THE CREATIVE GENIUS BEHIND CLOUDHAUS, A SOUTH AFRICAN FURNITURE DESIGN BRAND.

TikTok has been a

game-changer for

CloudHaus. It’s allowed me to reach a significantly larger audience without spending on ads. All I need is my phone.

Jared didn’t start his journey with a huge budget or a fancy marketing plan. Instead, he turned to the digital world and TikTok to show people the real heart of his business: the passion, the craft, and the story behind his designs. And it’s paying off in ways traditional advertising never could.

How CloudHaus came to life

As an architect with a love of design, he found that local furniture options didn’t really excite him. So, he decided to do what any innovative entrepreneur would do: make his own.

“No one was making the kind of furniture that my friends and I wanted, and at a price we could afford. So, I decided to make it myself instead,” Jared says.

Rather than launching with a big-budget ad campaign, he took a more personal approach: he began sharing his journey on TikTok. From the struggles of getting started, to the creative process behind each piece of furniture, Jared’s behind-the-scenes content started to resonate with viewers.

Why TikTok works for small businesses

Because people love stories. It’s no longer enough to just sell a product; customers want to know the story behind it. “My community inspired me to fully embrace furniture design. They connected with my behind-the-scenes content and my passion for design. TikTok became the perfect platform for sharing my story and showcasing my work,” says Jared.

By being real and sharing his experiences, Jared created a bond with his audience. That bond turned into sales, and his brand began to grow.

Three key lessons from Jared’s success:

• Prioritise storytelling over direct selling: People engage with relatable stories and genuine insights, not hard sales pitches.

• Use content to build relationships, not just awareness: “It’s more than just responding to comments. I incorporate feedback into my designs and content, allowing my community to see their ideas come to life,” says Jared.

• Leverage digital platforms strategically: “I’ve spent time analysing my favourite creators’ styles and refining my content. That effort created a distinct visual and narrative style for CloudHaus,” says Jared.

The results speak for themselves. Jared has been able to reduce ad spending while increasing brand visibility and sales – a rare achievement in today’s crowded marketplace.

“TikTok has been a game-changer for CloudHaus. It’s allowed me to reach a significantly larger audience without spending on ads. All I need is my phone,” he says.

The future…

As the brand grows, Jared plans to expand into custom interior design services and launch a new collection of furniture. And, of course, he’ll continue documenting it all on TikTok, giving his audience a front-row seat to the next chapter of his journey.

For any small business owner wondering whether TikTok could help them grow, Jared’s story is proof that it absolutely can. So, if you’ve got a story to tell, why not pick up your phone, hit record, and share it with the world? You never know where it might take you. IB

Ready to start investing?

HERE’S HOW!

ALRIGHT, FOLKS, LET’S TALK MONEY! NOT JUST THE “I CAN’T WAIT FOR PAYDAY” KIND OF MONEY, BUT THE GROW-YOUR-WEALTH KIND OF MONEY. NO CLUE ON WHERE TO BEGIN? NO WORRIES! INVESTING MIGHT SOUND LIKE SOMETHING RESERVED FOR THOSE FANCY FINANCE FOLKS WITH SPREADSHEETS IN THEIR BACK POCKET, BUT THE TRUTH IS, ANYONE CAN DO IT – EVEN YOU.

Why invest?

Inflation is creeping up, and the South African Rand is feeling the pressure. Savings accounts don’t always keep up with inflation: the current interest rate (early 2025) is around 7.25%, but that’s not enough for longterm growth. Investing lets your money work for you.

Step 1: Know your finances. Before jumping in, assess your situation. Do you have high-interest debt? Pay that off first. Then figure out how much you can invest without touching essentials. Even a couple of hundred ZARs a month is a solid start.

Step 2: Understand the SA market. The South African market has its quirks, but there’s opportunity – especially in tech and renewable energy, thanks to the energy crisis. Check out the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), where big players like Naspers, Sasol, and Shoprite are listed.

Step 3: Learn the basics. Okay, so you’ve decided to get your feet wet –great! But before you jump in, let’s break down some common investment types. There are three main categories:

1. Stocks: Owning part of a company, e.g., Naspers or MTN. Higher risk, but good longterm returns.

2. Bonds: Loans to companies or government. Greater stability but lower returns.

3. Property: A strong long-term bet, especially in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

If you’re new to investing, consider starting with unit trusts or exchange-traded funds (ETF). These allow you to invest in a range of assets (think: stocks, bonds, etc.) without picking individual investments yourself. ETFs, in particular, are great for beginners because they tend to have lower fees compared to unit trusts, which makes them even more appealing.

Step 4: Keep it simple and consistent. Forget timing the market – it rarely works. Instead, invest regularly, even R500 a month would do. Over time, this consistency adds up, and you’ll benefit from something called “dollar-cost averaging” (or, in our case, “rand-cost averaging”). This simply means you invest a fixed amount regularly, and whether the market is up or down, you’re buying more when prices are low and less when they’re high.

Step 5: Stay calm when markets fluctuate.

Markets rise and fall. South Africa’s faced economic uncertainty and load shedding, but if you invest for the long term (5+ years), short-term dips won’t matter.

Step 6: Track your progress.

Don’t just invest and forget. Check in monthly using apps like EasyEquities to monitor and adjust if needed.

Step 7: Enjoy the ride!

Investing is a journey. There’ll be ups and downs, but staying consistent will pay off. Next time you’re stuck in traffic, check your portfolio and feel good about taking charge of your financial future. IB

TIPS FOR SUCCESS INSIGHTS FROM FCTG’S MID-YEAR RESULTS

THE FUTURE OF BUSINESS TRAVEL LOOKS BRIGHTER THAN EVER. BY EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY, FOCUSING ON PERSONALISED SERVICE, AND PLANNING STRATEGICALLY, BUSINESS TRAVELLERS CAN MAXIMISE THEIR EFFICIENCY, STAY ON BUDGET, AND ENHANCE THEIR OVERALL TRAVEL EXPERIENCE.

The corporate travel industry continues to thrive, with Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) reporting strong mid-year results for FY25. Their success highlights several key trends and strategies that business travellers can apply to streamline their travel experience while boosting productivity.

EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY FOR A SEAMLESS EXPERIENCE.

FCTG’s emphasis on technological advancements, such as the AI-driven Productive Operations initiative, underscores the growing role of technology in enhancing the business travel experience. From automating basic tasks to optimising travel bookings, using platforms like FCTG’s Melon platform and corporate travel apps can help save time and reduce friction. Business travellers should take advantage of such tools to manage itineraries, track expenses, and stay on top of important updates.

FOCUS

ON PERSONAL

SERVICE WITH EFFICIENCY.

Despite the push for technology, FCTG stresses that their people remain the driving force behind their operations. This blend of automation with personal service ensures that business travellers still receive the support they need. Travellers should seek out service providers who combine the best of both worlds: the efficiency of technology with the personalised attention of a dedicated team, ensuring a smooth and responsive travel experience.

PLAN AHEAD FOR COST-EFFECTIVE TRAVEL..

FCTG’s success in increasing their Total Transaction Value (TTV) and securing a strong pipeline of new account wins highlights the importance of careful planning. For business travellers, this means booking flights and accommodations well

in advance to secure the best rates and optimise travel budgets. By anticipating travel needs and locking in reservations early, companies can significantly reduce costs, a crucial aspect of managing corporate travel budgets.

LEVERAGE THE POWER OF DATA AND REPORTING.

With FCTG investing in upgraded systems for phone, mid-office, and CRM usage, it’s clear that data-driven decision-making is a key component of their success. Business travellers should take advantage of corporate travel programs that provide detailed reporting tools. Tracking travel patterns, expenses, and performance can help optimise future travel strategies, ensure compliance with company policies, and identify potential savings.

STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS WITH LOCAL PARTNERS.

FCTG’s partnership with local suppliers and their focus on quality ingredients for curated services emphasise the importance of local connections. Business travellers can enhance their experiences by building relationships with local partners – whether hotels, car services, or destination specialists. These connections can lead to exclusive deals, insider knowledge, and a more customised travel experience.

PRIORITISE FLEXIBILITY IN UNCERTAIN TIMES.

The ongoing recovery of the corporate travel sector post-pandemic demonstrates the need for flexibility. Travellers should ensure their plans have built-in flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances. Whether it’s last-minute meeting changes or travel disruptions, having options to modify flights, accommodations, or itineraries will provide peace of mind. IB

AND HOW TO GET YOUR MOJO BACK. Bored with your job? Here’s why -

WE’VE ALL HEARD THE QUOTE, “LOVE WHAT YOU DO, AND YOU’LL NEVER WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE.” SOUNDS INSPIRING… BUT FOR MANY OF US, WHETHER WE’RE JUST STARTING OUT OR ARE MORE ESTABLISHED IN OUR CAREER, FINDING WORK THAT BRINGS REAL FULFILMENT CAN BE SOMEWHAT ELUSIVE.

According to Kelly Mossop (left), Business Unit Director at Tribeca Public Relations, career despondency is more common than we think. “It’s often triggered by selfdoubt, constructive criticism, influence, rejection, stagnation or uncertainty,” she explains. And it’s not just a one-time experience. It can appear at various stages of your career.

So how do we overcome these inevitable challenges and find work that truly inspires us? Kelly shares some invaluable lessons from her own career journey that can help anyone facing similar hurdles.

Resilience over rejection

For those starting out, the job hunt can feel like an endless cycle. After sending out countless CVs and receiving the dreaded “Unsuccessful” or “We’ll keep your details on file” email, it’s easy to feel discouraged. Then there’s the frustration of progressing to the second-round interviews, only to be told you didn’t make the cut.

The key to pushing through is resilience, says Kelly. “The job search isn’t just about landing a position. It’s about refining your skills, growing your network and remaining persistent,” she says.

“Resilience is what makes you stand out in a crowded, competitive field.”

But it’s not just about being tough and doggedly pushing through. Kelly also advises us to “not sweat the small stuff”. In other words, don’t get bogged down by every rejection or setback. Focus on the bigger picture and keep your eyes on your long-term goals.

The grit you build along the way

It’s been over 16 years since Kelly first started looking for internships in PR. Looking back, she remembers the highs and the lows, the excitement and the challenges. But one lesson stands out – now more than ever. “It’s far more valuable to me now than I could have imagined,” she says. The lesson? “Resilience to never give up, the drive to stand out, and always presenting the best version of yourself,” she reflects. “These are the qualities that build grit – and grit is something that’s respected in any career.”

Stagnation and the need for reinvention

Fast-forward a few years and you might find yourself facing a different kind of challenge: stagnation. What was once your dream job could start to feel like monotonous routine. The excitement fades and you might begin wondering whether the grass is greener on the other side.

For Kelly, the solution lies in reinvigoration. “The secret to overcoming stagnation is continuous learning, mentorship and reinvention,” she says. “Whether it’s attending an industry event, taking a new course, or finding a mentor who can help you grow, those experiences can reignite a passion you didn’t even know was there.”

She also stresses that networking isn’t just about finding your next job. Instead, it’s about building relationships with people who can inspire and help you grow. “Networking can provide fresh perspectives, remind you of your strengths, and help guide you through tough transitions.” Sometimes, career plateaus actually signal that it’s time for a change, not that you’ve failed.”

When you focus on growing and becoming the best version of yourself, you’ll find the motivation to push through challenges and seize new opportunities.

The long road to fulfilment

Building a career you love isn’t always a smooth ride. There will be bumps along the way, and sometimes, setbacks are part of the process. But, as Kelly emphasises, resilience and adaptability are the real game-changers. “When you focus on growing and becoming the best version of yourself, you’ll find the motivation to push through challenges and seize new opportunities.”

Whether you’re just starting out or are well into your career, Kelly’s advice remains the same: Loving what you do isn’t something that happens instantly. It’s something that grows with time, persistence and a willingness to embrace change.

“Loving what you do,” she says, “is nurtured through curiosity and a willingness to evolve.”

So, if you’re facing career challenges, remember – it’s all part of the journey. Keep going, stay resilient, and who knows? You might just end up exactly where you’re meant to be. IB

Golden years,

SUNNY SHORES!

THANKS TO MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS AND HEALTHIER LIFESTYLES, PEOPLE ARE LIVING LONGER, HEALTHIER, AND MORE ACTIVE LIVES THAN EVER.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), global life expectancy has jumped from 46 years in 1950 to 73 today, with many people thriving well into their 80s and 90s. For many, retirement is an exciting opportunity to explore new experiences, embrace fresh surroundings, and curate a lifestyle that blends relaxation with adventure.

With its breathtaking landscapes, world-class amenities, top-tier medical care, and a vibrant community of like-minded individuals, South

Africa is fast emerging as a premier retirement destination. Cape Town, recently crowned the best city in the world for 2025 by Time Out Magazine, further cements its reputation as the ultimate haven for retirees seeking both adventure and tranquility.

Stats SA reveal that over 3 000 retirees from Europe and the UK relocate to SA each year, with the Western Cape standing out as the destination of choice. With its unparalleled combination of beauty and exceptional quality of life, it’s no wonder more retirees are making the move.

“At Faircape Life, we are noticing a significant uptick in interest from international retirees looking to enjoy South Africa’s warmer climate and exceptional quality of life. The Western Cape, in particular, offers a perfect balance of natural beauty, excellent healthcare, and a vibrant community. Additionally, our Life Rights model makes the transition seamless, allowing retirees to secure a newly renovated home with the financial certainty of levies that only escalate by CPI – an attractive option for those looking to settle quickly and comfortably,” says Sarah Pietersen, Director at Faircape Life, an award-winning name in luxury retirement living.

A destination that offers more for less Affordability is a key factor driving international retirees to South Africa. While luxury retirement communities in Europe and North America come with hefty price tags, South Africa provides exceptional value for money. The favourable exchange rate allows retirees to enjoy a worldclass standard of living at a fraction of the cost.

A 2023 report by Numbeo states that the cost of living in South Africa is approximately 50% lower than in the UK and 60% lower than in the USA. Property prices in the Western Cape, while still premium by local standards, remain significantly more affordable than in cities like London or New York. The South African Reserve Bank also noted a 30% increase in foreign retirees purchasing

property in the Western Cape over the past decade, highlighting a growing trend among international retirees.

Healthcare is another crucial factor when choosing a retirement destination, and South Africa ranks among the top 50 countries globally for healthcare quality, according to the Legatum Prosperity Index. The Western Cape is home to state-of-the-art hospitals and specialist facilities, with a high standard of care at a fraction of the cost compared to Europe or the United States.

Luxury retirement estates like those offered by Faircape Life take this further by offering fully equipped healthcare centres within each of their six estates across the Western Cape. These centres provide a comprehensive range of medical services, ensuring that residents have access to top-tier healthcare right on their doorstep.

“What sets us apart is our on-site healthcare’s operated by Faircape Health. Each healthcare has an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals including onsite doctors and physicians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and speech therapists. One of the common concerns about retiring in South Africa is security. While safety can be a challenge in certain areas, luxury retirement villages are positioned in sought-after areas and offer gated communities with cuttingedge security systems. Faircape Life villages, for example, are equipped with 24-hour security personnel, electric fencing, CCTV surveillance, and access-controlled entry points, ensuring that residents can fully enjoy their surroundings with peace of mind.

Beyond security, these villages foster a strong sense of camaraderie and belonging. Retirement should be about community as much as comfort, and South Africa’s luxury villages provide ample opportunities for social engagement—whether through interactions at the clubhouses, group activities, fitness centres, or simply enjoying a glass of wine with neighbours while taking in the breathtaking scenery. Plus, with a team of skilled chefs creating delicious culinary meals, residents can indulge in exquisite dining experiences without leaving their village.

Additionally, Faircape Life villages are pet-friendly, with many residents enjoying the company of their furry friends. There’s even a Pet Manager and a unique pet therapy programme designed to enhance well-being and provide emotional support to healthcare residents.

The best of both worlds

South Africa offers the rare opportunity to retire in luxury, surrounded by natural beauty without the exorbitant costs associated with high-end retirement in Europe or North America. With its world-class healthcare, secure living, and welcoming communities, it’s no surprise that more and more international retirees are choosing the Western Cape as their ultimate retirement destination. Why settle for anything less?

BLENDING TRADITION WITH INNOVATION AT @SANDTON HOTEL CHEF YOSHAN:

IN THIS INTERVIEW, CHEF YOSHAN OF @ SANDTON HOTEL SHARES THE INSPIRATION BEHIND HIS NEW MENU, WHICH BLENDS CLASSIC TRADITIONS WITH BOLD TWISTS. HE DISCUSSES HIS CREATIVE PROCESS, EXCITING INGREDIENTS HE’S DISCOVERED, AND HOW HE BALANCES ADVENTUROUS AND FAMILIAR FLAVOURS TO CREATE A MEMORABLE DINING EXPERIENCE.

Chef Yoshan, your new menu at @Sandton Hotel blends classic elegance with contemporary flair. What inspired this creative approach to reimagining the dining experience?

The inspiration behind this menu comes from my love of timeless culinary techniques, but also my desire to innovate and create something that excites the modern palate. I wanted to bring a sense of refinement to each dish while infusing bold flavours and unexpected twists. The Sandton district is a dynamic, multicultural hub, so it felt right to reimagine the dining experience with a combination of classic and contemporary elements to suit the diverse guests we serve.

What’s one ingredient or technique you’ve recently discovered that you’re excited to incorporate into your dishes at @Sandton Hotel?

I’ve recently been experimenting with fermentation in new ways. It’s an ancient technique that enhances flavours and adds a layer of complexity to dishes. Whether it’s

fermented vegetables, miso, or even fermented honey, the depth of flavour it brings is something I’m really excited to incorporate into my dishes more, here at @Sandton Hotel.

How do you handle the challenges of creating a menu that caters to both adventurous food lovers and those who prefer more familiar dishes?

It’s all about balance. For the adventurous diners, I love pushing boundaries with bold combinations, new textures, and unexpected ingredients. For those who prefer something more traditional, I make sure the foundation of the dish feels comforting and familiar while adding subtle touches of creativity that elevate it without being overwhelming. My goal is to meet people where they are, food-wise, but also to give them a reason to explore something new.

What is the role that storytelling plays in a dining experience, and how is that expressed in your dishes at @Sandton Hotel?

It’s what makes a dish memorable. Every dish I create has a story, whether it’s a nod to a childhood memory, a homage to a favourite region of the world, or a personal experience. I make sure that story is conveyed not just in the flavours but also in the presentation, the ingredients, and the overall experience of dining. It’s about creating a deeper connection to the food beyond just taste.

What do you believe is the key to ensuring a memorable experience for diners, from the first bite to the last?

Consistency and attention to detail. It’s important that from the moment the guest takes their first bite, they feel something special. But the key to a memorable experience is in the finishing touches, whether it’s a perfect dessert or a signature drink. I also place a huge emphasis on the entire guest experience, making sure the service, ambience, and overall feel of the meal align to create a lasting impression.

How do you see food as a way of connecting cultures, especially in a cosmopolitan place like Sandton?

Food is a universal language. In a place where cultures collide, food becomes a bridge between different backgrounds. I love blending global influences into my dishes, whether it’s using spices from India, techniques from France, or locally sourced ingredients from South Africa. The goal is to create something that feels both global and local, offering diners a chance to explore new flavours while respecting the familiar.

With your focus on quality ingredients, what local producers or suppliers do you enjoy working with the most in curating your dishes?

I’m lucky to work with some incredible local suppliers. One that stands out is a small farm growing organic heirloom tomatoes and vegetables that I incorporate into many of my dishes. I also work with local fishmongers who supply fresh, sustainably sourced seafood. The quality of these ingredients is unmatched, and it’s such a pleasure to work with people who are as passionate about food as I am.

The dining atmosphere is as important as the food itself. How do you ensure the overall guest experience, from food to ambience, lives up to the high standards of @Sandton Hotel?

Creating an atmosphere that complements the food is essential. The ambience should reflect the elegance and creativity of the menu, with lighting, music, and decor that enhance the overall experience. At @Sandton Hotel, we focus on creating an environment that’s warm, welcoming, and sophisticated without being stuffy. The goal is for guests to feel like they’re in a space that’s both luxurious and comfortable, which we hope is echoed in our menu. IB

Fierce, Fun + Fab

have forgotten his face, but not you. Then, out of the blue, came a message: “Hey Milou, Mike here. My daughter’s back in Somerset West for the afternoon. Feel like popping around for coffee ?”

off Yes, pays

Remember that day you told the Uber driver to drop you at the end of the road because, well, cul-de-sacs aren’t exactly Uber-friendly? You were minding your own business, strolling back home with Kerry, when – bam! –there he was: Neighbour Guy, shirtless, with his garage door open, looking like he’d just stepped off the cover of DIY Digest: The Hot Edition.

Dear Self, Now, let’s not pretend you didn’t see this as your golden opportunity. With the confidence of a woman who knows she’s fabulous (and maybe a touch extra), you walked right up, introduced yourself, and handed him one of your hilariously quirky business cards:

HEY, I JUST MET YOU AND THIS IS CRAZY, BUT HERE’S MY NUMBER, 072 XXX XXXX SO CALL ME, MAYBE

Cute, right? Except life had other plans. No call. No text. Nada. Just radio silence for an entire year.

Fast-forward 12 months, long enough for most people to

Cue the universe winking at you with a sly grin.

Funny how life works, isn’t it? That casual moment of neighbourly flirtation turned into a coffee date exactly when it was meant to – not a day earlier, not a day later. Which brings me to this gem of wisdom: The Third Principle of Spirituality says, “Each moment in which something begins is the right moment.” Things don’t happen when we want them to; they happen when they’re supposed to. And Mike’s yearlater text? Proof that patience isn’t just a virtue – it’s a cosmic strategy.

And when it’s over? The Fourth Principle reminds us: “What is over, is over.” Let go, move on, grow. No obsessing, no overthinking – just trust the process.

So, here’s to slow burns, unexpected texts, and trusting that not a single snowflake lands in the wrong place. Love with your whole being. Be good to yourself. And remember life’s little detours make for the best stories.

Flirting with fate, always. Milou
