FINAL DRAFT


FADE IN: EXT. CROSSROAD - DAWN - 2003 A minute farm Bakkie is spotted driving towards frame on the long farm road of the scenic Stanford Valley. SERIES OF STATIC SHOTS BEGIN 2. Chickens running past a pile of hay bales. 3. A long row of sheep sheds. 4. A swinging tire hanging from a tree in a rural laborer settlement. 5. Hanging corn bags in a workshop. SERIES OF STATIC SHOTS END The Bakkie drives past frame on the farm road. MONTAGE: A montage of MOVING shots from an unknown source on back of the Bakkie, traveling through the Valley towards the City. EXTREME-WIDE-SHOT: An out of focus figure stops at a crossroad.(HIGH ANGLE) Something unidentifiable happens on screen. We PAN RIGHT onto a dusty farm road with a herd of sheep in the distance. SUPER: My Coca-Cola Nooi DISSOLVE TO: EXT. NIGEL’S FARMHOUSE - DAWN - 2005 A small, but well kept farmhouse with orange walls, a green lawn and peculiar leafless grey and white Oak Tree at the front gate. CRANE-SHOT(HIGH ANGLE): We CRANE DOWN from the branches of the Oak tree that shades the lawn and PAN LEFT onto NIGEL(65), an aged but well groomed Caucasian man sitting on a rocking chair with a small coffee table, facing the open farmlands. He takes a puff of his burgundy-colored smoking pipe as he sits and looks down the Valley. WIDE-SHOT: We see Nigel far LEFT of frame, facing away from the farmhouse. The camera PANS RIGHT towards the dusty farm road in front of the house.(We ZOOM IN). An unknown figure walking into the distance, far RIGHT of frame. CUT TO:

EXT. FARM ROAD - MORNING - 1995 The heat rest on the horizon of an endless graveled dessertlike farm road. ROXANNE(10), a short Caucasian girl in her school uniform, walks down the dusty farm road. She re-adjusts her school backpack in discomfort as she walks in the scorching heat. SERIES OF ANGLES:(dissolves)Roxanne walking on the farm road. EXT. PATHWAY - DAY Roxanne takes a shortcut and enters a much denser area with trees that provide partial shading on the dirt pathway. She notices something, puts on her spectacles and stops. THABO(10), a dirty black boy, stands barefoot next to an overturned wheelbarrow and a few corn bags on the ground next to it. Roxanne waves at him. Thabo smiles. She smiles back. We hear and increasing SOUND of a car driving towards them. (UNSEEN)A car comes racing past them. Roxanne shades her eyes with her left hand as she tries to identify the moving vehicle. CUT TO: EXT. NISSAN BAKKIE - DAY - 2003 An shiny Nissan Bakkie with wool covered seats. A snotty and teary Roxanne(18) is on the right side of frame. The camera facing her from on top of the hood. MONTAGE: We travel with Roxanne and her Ford through the open farm road, landscapes and landmarks. CUT TO: EXT. FARMLANDS - DAWN - 2005 A stubble field with hay bales standing ready to be collected in the misty morning.

WIDE-SHOT: The vehicle drives horizontally from RIGHT to LEFT of frame past scenic farmlands. We ZOOM IN onto Nigel, a small figure walking among the hay bales. LONELY MONTAGE BEGINS(Character Revealing) 1. Nigel riding tractor LEFT to RIGHT across frame. 2. Nigel walks among a herd of sheep. 3. Nigel works in a shed. 4. Nigel’s sad face reflects through his farmhouse window. 5. XWS: The scenic Stanford Valley in front of his house. LONELY MONTAGE ENDS CUT TO: EXT. POND BRIDGE - DAY - 1995 A pond bridge in the countryside. The camera CRANES OUT from behind the reeds to reveal Roxanne inside the wheelbarrow and Thabo pushing it from RIGHT to LEFT of frame across the bridge. We TILT UP from the school bag squeezed in between Roxanne’s feet and TRACK BACK to reveal Thabo who pushes her with cheerful excitement. They ride out of frame LEFT. CUT TO: EXT. RURAL SETTLEMENT - DAY A muddy patch of dirt with a crude rural farm settlement in the background. MEDIUM TRACKING CRANE SHOT: We TRACK BACKWARDS and PAN LEFT with Roxanne sitting on top of the corn bags and Thabo pushing the wheelbarrow from RIGHT to LEFT of frame towards the settlement. WIDE-SHOT: Roxanne and Thabo make their way towards the settlement reservoir dam. EXT. RESERVOIR DAM - DAY A deteriorating wooden peer leads into a small reservoir dam. The water reflection of Roxanne(10) and Thabo(10), crouched down and leaning over the edge of the peer.

We TILT UP from their reflections onto Roxanne(18) and Thabo(18), standing hand in hand on the edge of the peer. They look at each other for a brief moment, and then they jump in. EXT. NIGEL’S FARMHOUSE - 1995 Nigel is exactly where we left him. He smiles as he looks through the window. POV: A little Roxanne runs around on the front yard. WIDE-SHOT. Nigel walks out the front door. Roxanne running around, trying to catch a little infant lamb. Nigel holds the lamb between his legs, while Roxanne feeds it with a milk bottle. Nigel and Roxanne(10) stand side by side as they watch the lamb nibbling the grass. EXT. RESERVOIR DAM - 1995 Roxanne(10) and Thabo(10) sit together on a small peer overlooking a dam. She takes a small beanie from her backpack and puts it on his lead. He giggles. The Sun sets in the distance. FADE OUT: EXT. WOODS - DAWN - 2003 A cleared wood chopping area in a dense Forrest with piles chopped up planks all around a solid tree bark chopping block. CLOSE-UP: An axe forcefully slashes through a piece of wood. Thabo(18) breaks a piece of wood in half and looks up at someone approaching him. He wipes his brow. Nigel climbs out of the old Nissan, smoking his pipe. Thabo smiles at him. THABO More Bassie. Nigel remains silent as he walks to the back of his Bakkie, opens the hatch and picks up a wooden .22 rifle.

Thabo is absolutely stunned as he see's the gun. THABO (CONT’D) (shivering) Bassie? Nigel stands a couple of meters away from him and loads the rifle. CLICK! CUT TO BLACK. EXTREME WIDE-SHOT: BANG! Birds Scatter from the woods. CUT TO: EXT. NIGEL’S FARMHOUSE - DAY - 2003 MCU: An teary Roxanne stands centred in the frame in front of Nigel. MCU: Nigel puffs his pipe as he sits on his rocking chair with the farmhouse in the background. CRANE SHOT: Nigel sits on his rocking chair. HIGH ANGLE: The camera CRANES OVER the roof of the house with Roxanne running from the grass into the main house. She SLAMS the front door. A Nissan Bakkie spins as it accelerates away from the house. We continue to CRANE and PAN RIGHT as the vehicle races down the long dusty farm road. CUT TO: EXT. NISSAN BAKKIE - DAY - 2003 The same snotty and teary Roxanne drives the Bakkie. EXT. FARM ROAD - DUSK - 1995 WIDE-SHOT: The Bakkie passes Roxanne(10) who cycles on the right side of the farm road. Roxanne takes a left into the road leading to the rural settlement. EXT. RURAL SETTLEMENT - DUSK We CRANE RIGHT as Roxanne pushes her bycicle into the settlement. The camera PANS around her to reveal that the settlement is uninhabited. Roxanne is confused and scans the area in order to find Thabo.

She appears from behind a heap of worn tractor tires as she walks to the backyard of the settlement where she finds the overturned wheelbarrow and a in the mud. Now she looks even more confused. WIDE-SHOT: Roxanne standing all alone in the mud(HIGH ANGLE). CUT TO: EXT. NIGEL’S FARMHOUSE - DUSK - 2005 Nigel morbidly gets up from the rocking chair(HIGH ANGLE) and walks towards the Oak Tree. BIRD’s EYE POV: Nigel with a noose over his shoulder puts a ladder up against the tree and climbs up towards frame. EXT. FARM ROAD - LAKE - DAY - 2003 A small lake is situated next to a long farm road with no fencing. Roxanne is still driving. She takes her hand off steering wheel to wipe the tears from her eyes. Suddenly, a lamb appears in the middle of the road. Roxanne tries to avoid hitting the lamb and spins the steering wheel. EXTREME WIDE-SHOT: The Bakkie spins out of control and enters a lake. Water and mud splashing everywhere. INTERCUT WITH: INT. NISSAN BAKKIE - DAY - 2003 SLO-MO: Roxanne tries to regain control of the spinning car. POV: Mud and Water splash onto the windscreen, covering it completely. DISSOLVE TO: EXT. OAK TREE - DUSK - 2005 We CRANE UP, starting from a mud patch on the ground, past a small wood block, all the way up to Nigel who tightens the noose around his neck. His eyes well up as he stares into the abyss. He takes a puff of his pipe.

EXT. LAKE - DAY - 2003 TRACKING SHOT: The camera TRACKS BACKWARDS from outside the driver's seat window to reveal the Nissan covered in mud and submerged a few feet into the lake with smoke coming from the engine. CUT TO: EXT. OAK TREE - DUSK - 2005 EXTREME-WIDE-SHOT: The wooden block collapses underneath Nigel and he drops to the ground. The noose breaks his neck and he swings like a rag doll. INTERCUT WITH: SERIES OF RAPID SHOTS BEGIN 1. Nigel falls - The smoking pipe falling out of Nigel’s mouth as the noose tightens. 2. Roxanne’s facial expression moments before the car crash. 3. A tightening noose with a hanging Nigel(Dutch High Angle). 4. Medium-Close-UP: Nigel fires his .22 Rifle 5. The small lamb in the dusty road. MEHH! 6.

Nigel falls - Feet dropping (SLO-MO) to the ground.

SERIES OF RAPID SHOTS END TOTAL SILENCE for a brief moment as Nigel hangs by the neck(Extreme-Wide-Shot). The sound of a BREEZE blowing increases. CRANE SHOT: The camera CRANES OUT, starting from the burgundysmoking pipe on the ground. It continues; Nigel’s hanging body gets smaller and smaller as more of the farmhouse is revealed. We MOVE RIGHT onto the Valley that stretches out as far as the eye can see. DISSOLVE TO: EXT. CROSSROAD - DUSK - 2003 The same unidentifiable object on the dusty farm road becomes clear. It’s a Nissan Bakkie and it drives RIGHT out of frame to reveal THABO(18) standing on the side of the road with all his luggage.


8.

He re-adjusts his beanie, picks up his bags and walks away from the crossroads with the Stanford Valley behind him and the Mountains in front of him. MCU: His eyes are wet. He sniffs. EXTREME-Wide-SHOT: Thabo walks from RIGHT to LEFT out of frame. SUPER: My Coca Cola Nooi. FADE TO BLACK. THE END
