“Jan Maritz, a reckless & unemployed Hipster from Cape Town discovers that he is the father of a 5-‐year-‐old girl, back in his hometown. Welkom”
Welkom in Welkom is an Afrikaans/English/Zulu true South African Story. It’s a little bit hyperrealist, similar to the film Garden State and it’s a little bit dull and quirky like the film Eagle vs. Shark. With this film we aim to establish a Sundance/ Tribeca Indie-‐Film Audience. An audience which can relate and engage with a new-‐media coming of age film. This film aims to promote South Africa’s former Gold mining Capital -‐ Welkom and it’s neighboring towns that spread throughout the Goldfields. We can successfully film this production on a low-‐budget with a strong realist-‐French New Wave style; that of Rowen’s favorite and most influential director; Jean-‐Luc Goddard. Rowen firmly believes that Welkom in Welkom would be the next generational coming of age film competing with the countrywide cultural relevance of the film Bakgat! The script has been developed since 2012 when Rowen graduated AFDA Film School with his graduation film; Jean Pant, starring Armand Greyling from Die Windpomp. From 2013 onwards Rowen gathered his cast with his Honours Short Film; ’n Stukkie Winter, with popular faces such as Roland Reed from Black Sails, Sean-‐Marco Vorster from Kyknet’s Naweek & Edwin van der Walt from; Ballade vir ’n Enkeling & Hollywood in my Huis.
