Elk Mountain Lodge Aspen, Colorado A family compound reminiscent of a Colorado homestead, Elk Mountain Lodge is clustered around a pair of tranquil ponds and surrounded by soaring mountain peaks. A mix of refurbished historic cabins and new construction, eight buildings share amenities and provide a sense of community. The plan was carefully considered so that each building has its own relationship to the ponds and mountain views. A short walk from the Main Lodge, outlying cabins provide both privacy and easy access to acres of open country.

Elk Mountain Lodge: Main Lodge Aspen, Colorado 15,000 SF Originally a gentleman’s camp, the centrally located Main Lodge functions as a family home for the owners and home base for the compound. With the goal of retaining and respecting its grand Western character, exterior elements such as bleached logs and corrugated steel rooflines, and interior details such as elaborate wall carvings and double-sided stone fireplaces, were retained. With eight bedrooms and a commercial-scale kitchen, the Main Lodge can accommodate the entire extended family for a luxury retreat.

Ragged Ranch Somerset, Colorado An authentic reproduction of a full-scale, 19th Century settlement, this 6,400-acre ranch in Colorado’s remote Ragged Mountains is a true ode to the past. Intended as a private retreat for a global businessman and his family, the design was predicated upon extensive study of and research into the pattern of development of old Western towns. Centered around the recreation of a historically-accurate main street, complete with an extensive boardwalk system constructed of reclaimed wood and railroad ties, the ranch is a full-service, functioning community with easy access to hunting, fishing, riding and other sports. With density along the main street, the site plan includes 24 restored, repurposed buildings and cabins recovered from an authentic Western town and 36 new buildings. Key buildings include an entertainment-oriented, period-specific saloon with modern-day acoustics and seven second-story guest rooms, a train station, a livery, a firehouse, a church, and three large Victorian-style homes. Specification of all utilities were included in the overall development plan.

Trentaz Ranch: The Barn Studio Near Aspen, Colorado 3,197 SF A goal for the project was to embrace the unique features of the existing structure, including a singular rogue shape and formidable stone exterior, while updating it with contemporary finishes and furnishings. The natural beauty of the site, along with the heritage of both the overall ranch and the existing structure, led the Barn Studio design team to focus on blending old and new elements and maximize existing open volumes. Several of the original elements of the project were retained, including wood beams, railings, unique floor patterns and a light-collector intended to shine light at a certain point in the home during the summer solstice.

Trentaz Ranch: Ridge House Aspen, Colorado 8,250 SF Set along a ridgeline with significant mountain views, Ridge House is a thoughtful blending of old and new. Sets of staggered, remnant stone walls run in a single direction, allowing light and landscape to slip past. Oriented along a central defining spine, metal walls meet stone and evolve into glass as movement through the house progresses from public to private spaces. Modern architecture mixed with curated details allows for a layering of history and a connection to the ranch-like character of the site.

Trentaz Ranch: Meadow House Aspen, Colorado 8,500 SF The tri-level home is sited at the edge of a meadow, amid existing evergreens, spruce and gambel oak trees. With the goal of integrating the home onto the site as seamlessly as possible, the architectural team designed an iconic, gabled house form that gradually “peels up from a traditional symmetrical front to an open back that transitions into the landscape and focuses on the views. Indoor spaces address the family’s desire for vertical living, with ample public spaces on the ground level and private spaces on an upper level. Other specifications include a floor plan that is primarily open, yet provides distinct common, study and office spaces. Outdoor living spaces are designed to both maximize mountain and meadow views, and provide easy transitions between the interior and exterior. Exterior materials were influenced by the organic palette of the surroundings.
