located on Main Street at the entrance to town in a restored 1890s historic landmark building, and the Denver studio is located in a restored 1892 historic commercial building in the vibrant downtown neighborhood of LoDo. Our consistent design approach is credited to the fact that our collaborative process tests Aspen Studio

conventional thinking. This thread connects across all of our projects, allowing our diverse project experiences to inform one another no matter their type or locale. Our design thinking ranges from ‘macro to micro’ instantly, with the driving force always based on context, spirit of place, environment, and experience.

Mountain Retreat This modern lodge-style home set in the Five Trees neighborhood at the base of the Aspen Highlands ski area is a legacy home for extended families to gather in Aspen’s setting of natural beauty. The tri-level home is located on a steep site set in a forest of aspen and fir trees and was designed in a mountain vernacular with modern influences. It includes multiple bedrooms, extensive decks and terraces, a pool and spa, and a generous motor court. Exterior materials were informed by the textural nature of the surrounding mountains as well as iconic National Park lodges. Natural stone veneer and wood slat siding pair with a standing seam metal roof.

1. ACCESS Access to the site was designed to work with the existing slope and to utilize the dense growth of aspens and spruce trees as a visual buffer from the roads on both sides of the site.

2. CARVING + NESTLING Based on the topography, the house is thoughtfully nestled into the hillside to create a dialogue between the built structure and the surrounding landscape.

3. INDOOR + OUTDOOR CONNECTIONS Multiple views of the surrounding valleys are accessible from within the house creating a constant connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

- 37 -

Additional materials and elements include a wood slat screen at the entry, heavy timber rafter tails, steel lintels, and a green roof over the living room. The interior layout provides visual connections between main level public spaces, plus the ability to close off rooms for privacy. The home’s design includes connections to outdoor living spaces and views to Maroon Creek, Roaring Fork, and Hunter Creek valleys. Four bedroom suites and a bunk room allow for generous and flexible sleeping arrangements. The lower level includes space for a game room, gym, and massage room as well as back of house support. R+B provided both architecture and interior design services for this project. Renderings were a powerful design communication tool to test materials, furniture, lighting, and the owner’s artwork in the spaces. The investment in renderings has provided another means of mocking up the final design so that the entire team is confidently moving forward.

Rusty Parrot Lodge The Rusty Parrot Lodge is a long-loved luxury destination in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In November 2019, the original hotel unfortunately burned down. R+B was given the brief to rebuild “The Parrot with the spirit of the past hotel yet take the architecture, design and legacy into the future. The site is set on the edge of town, at the convergence of the town grid and the rural back drop of Flat Creek and East Gros Ventre Butte. This unique location, at the corner of Jackson Street and Gill Avenue, allows the architecture to stand apart, addressing both the downtown core and the surrounding landscape. Across the street is Miller Park, a full town block of open space for community gatherings.

Inspired by the great lodges of the west and the rugged, natural beauty of Jackson, the architecture is rooted in place. The stone base anchors the building and serves as a remnant of a former life on the site. Emerging from the stone walls are strong, three-story gabled roofed forms that purposely step in and out creating a rhythm of balconies along the facade. Terraces on the upper level are discovered places, overlooking the park and wildlife on the adjacent butte. Elements from the former lodge are reinterpreted as arched bottom trusses in the gables with “crows feet cross bracing and special arched openings within the stone walls. The building engages its context, welcoming both visitors and locals. The strong street frontage is interrupted by a porte cochere providing a protected vehicular drop-off. A large glass portal in the stone facade exposes the den and restaurant to the street, with a view connecting through to the interior landscaped courtyard. The gourmet restaurant feels like home with an open, exhibition style kitchen. The south facing courtyard conceals the underground parking and brings the surrounding nature and sunlight into the property resulting in a tranquil garden respite for guests.

Natural materials from the exterior extend to the inside, again merging the surrounding landscape into the design. An open stair from the lobby to all three levels becomes a central defining element, leading guests to the various types of guest rooms. Handcrafted heirloom furniture pieces give character and uniqueness to each room. Through every detail, the heritage of place and Western hospitality will once more shine at The Rusty Parrot. The renderings produced for this project were critical to the success of the swift design process. They helped bring the building and ideas to life and gave confidence to the clients. In turn, the renderings were used to gain unanimous support from the Town of Jackson, immediately translating the ideas on paper into a building that people can visualize.

2020 Biennale Architettura Architecture is humanity’s imprint on the earth. It exists in context with its surroundings and responds to the needs of those who inhabit it. At every opportunity a thoughtful, purposeful approach to the design process must be taken. Respect and compassion are intrinsic. Everything is connected. In Colorado, many lessons are learned from the complexities of the natural environment, the greatest teacher of all. Last year, historic 100-year avalanches imposed immediate scars on the landscape. But with time, the land evolves, springs back with an intense rejuvenation that offers an exchange of perspective.

So it can be with the landscape of modern society. Those who design personal environments show resilience by dynamically embracing the cycle of life, transcending the challenges of building in a new reality. With renewed vigor and inspired by nature’s example, what has stood the test of time thus far may be repurposed and preserved, responding to present requirements and needs. Influenced by sound judgment and a desire to evolve and grow, thoughtful architecture is assured to resonate. Every line drawn. Every angle measured. Every opportunity embraced. Every relationship valued. Every perspective considered. Creating spaces that inspire, resonate, inform, transform, and allow for insight and understanding for exchange, provides a living environment that transcends space, that blurs the boundaries in which to reflect, communicate, share. R+B used renderings as one of our visualization tools to convey our concept for the 2020 Venice Biennale Architettura exhibition. The renderings allowed us to test our experiential concept to make sure the scale of the individual elements completed the installation to truly foster an exchange of perspective.
