OSPREY NEST 

Osprey can be spotted all over the resort, they should probably just name them the official bird of Sandestin®. Even if you're not into ornithology, these amazing birds are sure to pique your interest. During the construction of Sandestin®’s newest luxury condos - fittingly named Osprey Pointe - workers found an osprey nest on top of one of the cranes. Ospreys are a federally protected bird, so the nest was preserved and temporarily relocated. From there, it was permanently moved to it's own osprey nest pole, which you can find today, directly behind the Osprey Pointe clubhouse.

TREEHOUSE 

Perfectly situated on the scenic boardwalk between The Village of Baytowne Wharf and the Baytowne Marina is a fabulous treehouse that is everything you could have dreamed of as a kid — but so much better. “It brings back memories of simpler times and was created for youngins and the young at heart, because there’s nothing like a treehouse to bring out the Tom Sawyer in all of us,” says Robertson.

JOLEE ISLAND NATURE PARK Nature lovers will love this hidden gem. Once you’ve crossed over the wooden footbridge leading to the park, you’ll find a picturesque, quiet setting that also includes a privateer-themed play area with a post tower, making it an appealing stop for both kids and adults. Walkers and runners can also enjoy the mile-long nature trail around the perimeter of the park. The trail even features yard swings, which are a great place to see both Choctawhatchee Bay and Horseshoe Bayou. SANDESTIN.COM

DUNES FAMILY PUTTING COURSE

If you’ve brought a best fourlegged friend with you, you’ll love the resort’s “Bark Park.” Located near the treehouse between The Village of Baytowne Wharf and the Baytowne Marina, the park is a safe, clean environment that your pet is sure to enjoy. With ramps, trees for shade and a water station, it’s a great place to stretch all four legs, and you may even make some new friends.

Great entertainment for the whole family, this 18-hole miniature golf course offers special pricing, a happy hour and ice cream. Take a break from the fairways and hit this green for some serious fun. This hidden gem is located on the resort’s beach side, just beyond the south security guard station.

BAYTOWNE WHARF FISHING PIER 

Fishing enthusiasts take note: the resort offers great fishing, so you’ll want to bring your poles for this one. Situated between Poppy’s Crazy Lobster and The Village Door, the boardwalk and pier are peaceful places to fish and enjoy views of Baytowne Marina. The marina’s convenient bait shop offers live bait and rod rentals, and Marina Bar and Grill will cook any freshly caught, skinned and deboned fish you bring them from your fishing excursion. 14

MURALS AT BAYTOWNE WHARF Looking for a great selfie or Insta-moment? Be sure to visit the Discovery Center at The Village of Baytowne Wharf, where the exterior walls feature two hand-painted murals. One mural displays the Village’s tagline: “Shop. Dine. Play.” The other depicts an underwater scene, with the “Beach to Bay” verbiage playing on the fact that Sandestin® extends all the way from the Choctawhatchee Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. Both murals are perfect photo-ops, so you can snap a picture for Instagram or just to have great memories to look back on later.

(BONUS) RAVEN/ BAYTOWNE COURSES 

Fun fact for all you golfers: Raven has two 16th holes. The course features back-to-back par 3’s — which one you’ll play depends on what day it is. The reason for that? This area of the golf course was originally part of Baytowne Golf Course when it featured 27 holes on three nine-hole courses. At the time, it was a par 4 and had no homes on it. “When Raven was being designed, Robert Trent Jones Jr. felt the ‘corridor’ was too narrow for a par 4; so, he came up with the idea of back-to-back par 3’s,” explains Rick Hilleman, Director of Golf at Sandestin®. “We play Raven 16A on even days and Raven 16B on odd days. The scorecard shows the two holes, plus the shop and tee hosts advise golfers about the two holes and which one they will be playing that day so no one gets confused. Maybe not a hidden gem per se, but more of a ‘Did you know?’ Most people would never realize that Sandestin®’s four golf courses have a combined 73 golf holes.”

J

ennifer and Chris Foegelle spent part of their wedding night in 2008 ice skating, but it wasn’t back home in Pittsburgh. No, it was right here at The Village of Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin®. “We noticed the rink when we went to the wharf for drinks and thought it would be something fun and unique to do after our wedding,” Jennifer recalled. “There were about seven of us who went together… some just watched and giggled at the rest of us.” Jennifer’s college roommate and best friend Carin Kosmoski said it was an unforgettable trip: “My absolute favorite memory from Sandestin® is Jennifer’s wedding. She and Chris had a beautiful ceremony on the beach, an intimate reception, and then a fun-filled evening ice skating at Baytowne Wharf.” Kosmoski said that doing something unexpected was half the fun of a visit to Sandestin®. “Of course there are the typical resort activities — the beach, the pools, riding bikes, going to the fitness center and getting

pampered at the spa, “ she says, “but we have also painted pottery, had afternoon tea and deep-fried a Thanksgiving turkey in the middle of a cul-de-sac.” The Foegelles’ generational attachment to Sandestin® begins with Peggy Brown moving from Boston to the Emerald Coast in the early ’80s. Brown spent 30 years working in Sandestin®’s real estate office and became the “Aunt Peggy magnet” that attracted relatives here. “The best thing about the resort is that it has always had a strong master owners association, and they always kept it looking pristine,” Brown said. “They have maintained the roads, and the landscaping has always been beautiful and well maintained. It’s always been beautiful to look at.” Jennifer’s first memory of Sandestin® involves her parents bringing her from Pittsburgh for a

visit to Aunt Peggy when she was a kid in 1987. “We made several trips after that, initially as a family, and then I was allowed to bring a friend along,” she said. “It would be 10 degrees in Pittsburgh, but it was always a beautiful day at Sandestin® Golf and Beach Resort!” And thus, the beach getaway became a family tradition. Jennifer noted how friendly everyone was. Her mom, Janet Rippel, would always go for walks in the morning, and everyone she met would offer a “good morning.” And that was just the start of a lifelong romance. “When I came as a child, I thought Sandestin® was magical. I still do,” she says. “Over the years, I’ve tried just about everything there: jet skis, tennis, biking, fishing, kayaks, the dinner cruise. But what really made it special was spending time with my aunt and her friends and my friends.”

return trips are a no-doubter for the Foegelle family. “It means so much to me that we’re able to share the resort with them. It’s part of their legacy. That’s priceless. I plan on coming back with my best friend again for a girl’s trip,” Jennifer says. “Sandestin® is my happy place. It’s so much more than a vacation destination. It’s like a second home, and coming back is nostalgic. I have the best memories of my visits. Plus, there’s still so much more I want to do!”

T

his year marked the 19th annual Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic (ECBC) at Sandestin®, which has become one of the most notable and celebrated offshore fishing tournaments on the Gulf Coast. Named as one of the top 10 big-money tournaments in the world by Marlin magazine, ECBC’s large cash awards and over 27 optional entry levels mean there are plenty of ways to win a piece of the pot. With 88 boats and $1,976,300 in cash awards, 2021 was the second largest event to date and also featured a new tournament record. ECBC is a “modified-release” tournament and leads the Gulf Coast tournament circuit in setting a high minimum length for blue marlin, which are the only billfish that may be weighed. Release points are awarded for blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish and spearfish. Awards are presented to the top overall, release, lady and junior anglers, and the top overall release team has its name engraved on the Magnificent Blue Perpetual Trophy, donated by Galati Yacht Sales and Viking Yachts. Sculpted by Chris Barela, the trophy can be seen on permanent display at Sandestin®’s Marina Bar & Grill.

The week kicked off on Wednesday with the traditional Golf Scramble, sponsored by Hancock Whitney, at The Links Golf Club. Rain was on the forecast, but it held off for the 24 teams competing for various prizes, including sunglasses from ECBC sponsor, Costa Del Mar. Mark Connelly, Caleb Maraman, Tiger Scheyd and David Mowery earned the bragging rights with a score of 52. Following the golf scramble, the Captains gathered in the Juniper Ballroom of the new Hotel Effie for the Official Captain’s Meeting, where all rules and regulations were reinforced for a fair and successful tournament. Then, it was time to party. The Kick-off Party was where the anglers could pick up their swag buckets, eat, drink and dance to live music by Those Three Guys. Thursday morning came quickly, and the day was met with sunshine and low winds, setting the scene for a perfect 12 o’clock shotgun start. After Breakfast and Bloodies 28

Atmore, was once again the presenting sponsor of The Classic. Speaking of Wind Creek, they were one of the most popular booths in the 2021 ECBC Vendor Village. They not only presented a chef’s tasting, but they also had poker tables and wheel games for attendees to try their luck for prizes. Vendor Village was filled with other sponsors, an official ECBC merch tent (which sold out!) and other artisans and vendors both local and national. Vendor Village is open to the public and is always a hotspot while waiting for the weigh-ins. The tournament scales officially opened Friday afternoon. Frequent visitors to the beaches of the Destin area for the past five years, Nashville native Becca Supalla and her family decided this year to try something different than their usual vacation stay at a condo. Arriving at Hotel Effie in May, the family stayed for five days. While the humans appreciated the food options — including breakfast and dinner menus at Ovide, Sweet Bay coffee bar, and the Spa Lilliana amenities — the dog-friendly aspects of the hotel also held great appeal for Maddie, their golden retriever puppy. And there was plenty for young Maddie to be excited about. There were new places to see and all the areas to walk and sniff, perfect for this year-and-a-half-old bundle of energy. Every day, the hotel staff greeted Maddie while entering and exiting (the staff is full of pet lovers), plus there were daily visits to the nearest water station for a new bowl of ice-cold water after being outside. Maddie also got to meet other dogs who are on trips of their own, and she felt safe even when her owners left her in the kennel while they went out for meals.

Staying hydrated and having places to walk are crucial to a dog’s needs, and Hotel Effie provides plenty of both. Each floor offers water stations, and the various options for daily walks are enough to keep both dogs and humans engaged. From Hotel Effie, walking through The Village of Baytowne Wharf and along the Choctawhatchee Bay to Baytowne Marina is very scenic and quiet. There are miles of tree-lined sidewalks and nature trails around the resort to explore, as well. And while Hotel Effie may not offer pet services among their amenities, the hotel does their utmost to make a stay there welcoming to pets traveling with their humans. All rooms and suites are pet-friendly, so guests can choose a larger room with a balcony or something cozier. Dog guests of Hotel Effie receive a dog bed, dog bowl, doggy bags, a ball or toy, and a bag of dog treats from Einstein Pets. Among the pet-friendly activities on-site to keep your dog happy at Hotel Effie, as well as at Sandestin® Golf & Beach Resort, there’s a hidden gem known as “Bark

Park,” Sandestin®’s dog park. The site is a shady, fenced-in area by Choctawhatchee Bay with great views of the water and obstacles for dogs to enjoy. Other outdoor venues are also pet-friendly, such as Baytowne Marina and the Treehouse on Jolee Island. In addition, many restaurants at The Village of Baytowne Wharf offer outdoor seating so that pets can join their owners for meals, including Slick Lips, Poppy’s Crazy Lobster, Hartell’s Village Diner and Rum Runners. Hotel Effie requires a non-refundable cleaning fee for any guests bringing a pet, which is waived for service dogs. The fee is totally justified with all of the pet swag that they get to walk with! Dogs up to 65 pounds are welcome, but it is requested that they be trained and well mannered. Also, all animals must be leashed, crated or held firmly while they are in any common areas of the hotel. I couldn’t pass up the privilege to lead the resort to higher levels. What sold me on the move were the people I met within the resort when I visited. The team supports each other and are all passionate about the success of the resort and helping make memories for our guests.

2. During your career in hospitality, is there a particular moment that stands out above the rest for you? Of course, in a fast-paced and dynamic industry like hospitality, there are several. One of the most exciting tenures in my career was leading a beautiful luxury hotel in Tokyo, Japan. On my second day, I had the privilege of welcoming the current Chief of Naval Operations. That moment really put into perspective the importance of the role I was embarking on as an ambassador in international relations and a custodian of safety and comfort for our troops and diplomats abroad. It wasn’t just another hotel job — some of the most important

time, so I have plenty of time to make memories going forward. I got a kick out of the security guard at the gate when I arrived. As I found out, I went through the wrong gate and shouldn’t have been pulling a boat through the gate and resort. I told him I was starting a new job in Sandestin®, and he asked me “do you always bring a boat to work.” He was joking and graciously instructed me on where to go. It was a nice way to break the ice after a two day drive from Pennsylvania.

5. What has been your favorite thing to learn about Sandestin® since your arrival? I am amazed at the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico and the Choctawhatchee Bay. I have visited many shorelines, but I don’t think I have seen any as beautiful as the Emerald Coast. Arriving at the height of the season has been a whirlwind, and the energy is motivating.

6. If there was one thing that you wish everyone knew about Sandestin® … It would be beauty of the surroundings and the multitude of activities and events. And I am so looking forward to my first winter in the South!

n August, our market began to show signs of a slight cooling as 71 new properties came onto the market, bringing our total inventory to a 10-month-high of 138 properties, and remained in active status a current average of 30 days (as of Sept. 22, 2021). Of those 71 new listings, 18 are currently pending and 11 have already gone under contract and closed. There are daily reports speculating the outcome of the end to mortgage forbearance sometime before the end of the year, leading some buyers to adopt a wait-and-see position. While many homes will come out of forbearance throughout the United States, banks are reporting that more than 75% of these

homeowners are already under a payment plan and will be unaffected by the end of the relief program. Additionally, a large percentage of Sandestin®’s properties are unencumbered by mortgages and wouldn’t have been subject to the mortgage relief program.
