STAY PCB CURRENT

Follow these water safety tips while enjoying the sand and surf under the sun

Daryl Paul is a professional lifeguard and Panama City Beach Fire Rescue’s beach safety director. He has a degree in public safety management from Gulf Coast State College, is trained in openwater lifeguarding, and is a certified emergency medical responder and personal watercraft rescue operator. Today, he manages a team of 12 full-time lifeguards along the area’s 9.6 miles of sandy beach.

What would you consider the beach essentials for a safe, fun day on PCB shores?

You need water, an umbrella, and sunscreen, but the first thing you should do, before you even pack for the beach, is subscribe to our text alerts. Text PCBFLAGS to 888777, and you’ll receive a daily update that tells you which beach flags are flying. The other thing that is so important is to swim near a lifeguard at the Russell Field City Pier. You have a one in 18 million chance of drowning in front of a properly trained United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) accredited lifeguard, like ours on Panama City Beach. You take a greater risk driving to the beach than you do if you swim near a lifeguard.

When purple flags fly, what should visitors look out for and avoid?

We use guidance for flags from the International Lifesaving Federation: We fly purple flags when stinging marine pests like jellyfish are present. They’re not meant to indicate a shark warning, which is a common misconception.

What should visitors expect when yellow flags fly?

Yellow flags keep visitors on alert for the moderate hazards they may encounter here. The Gulf of Mexico can look calm and pristine, but it is a dynamic body of water that can change quickly. Yellow flags alert visitors to the need for caution.

What is the difference between a single and double red flag?

A single red flag indicates high hazard, and you should not enter the water. Double red flags mean the water is closed to the public due to hazardous rip currents. They are simply too strong to allow for recreational swimming. A new ordinance just passed that allows for a $500 fine, no warning needed, if you are in the water when double reds are posted.

What do you love about your job?

Besides the cool uniform and the takehome truck? I’m a native of Panama City Beach, and I have a servant’s heart. I have the knowledge and finally landed in a position where I can positively impact my community. I have really tough days, but I know I’m doing something for my neighbors, the people I live with here, and the visitors who come to our shores. We have an amazing staff and culture. The morale is at an all-time high, rescues are significantly down from 237 last year to 101 this year. Public assists went from 2,500 down to 357, and our preventative actions are through the roof. That shows that the lifeguards and how they operate now are preventing the need for rescues and ultimately saving lives before people even get in the water.

Know Before You Go! Rip Current 101s

Our super-fine sand shifts easily, so it’s common for the waves to create rip currents on the sandbar. They won’t get weaker until the wind dies or changes direction, so swimmers caught in the current get little chance to rest.

As you head to the beach, take a moment to observe the flag. We fly our beach flags based on the rip current hazard for the day. If you see a yellow flag, pump the brakes. If you see red, you should stop and look.  Rip currents are deep spots between two shallow sandbars. Water is pushed onto the shoreline, then recedes out to sea. That forced recession funnels out of the deep spots and back out to sea. When you find a sandbar, you’ll see waves build up and spill over until it disappears. That means it’s deep there. Then it should pick up on the other side. That’s the easiest way to spot a rip current.

Beach Flags

To Stay PCB Current with daily updates on water conditions, text PCBFLAGS to 888777 or visit PCBFL.gov

GREEN

Low hazard with calm conditions. Caution is still advised.

YELLOW

Medium hazard with moderate surf and/or strong currents.

High hazard with high surf and strong currents.

Swim near a lifeguard. They will walk over and warn you about rip currents. That’s their job. If you’re in the rip, there’s no break. If you turn to fight it you’re going to get tired. It’s going to overpower you. Rip currents are strong enough to overpower even an Olympic swimmer. Stay calm and swim parallel to the shore. If you do that, you will eventually swim out of the rip current. The other alternative is to float facing shore and let it take you until help arrives. If you see somebody struggling in the water, please do not take action or risk your own safety. Instead, call 911 and have a trained professional respond to the scene. The best thing you could do for that person in the water is summon the resources and professionals that will help them. Don’t delay 911, and don’t delay the lifeguards. They are trained to handle these situations.

Very high hazard. Water closed to the public.

PURPLE

Dangerous marine life present. Purple flags will be seen in conjunction with another flag color.

LOCALS’ TIPS

Kelly Breedwell is the founder of the Facebook group I Love Panama City Beach! The Facebook group has more than 412,000 members and continues to grow. Breedwell’s purpose for creating the group was to invite visitors and locals to share their favorite PCB moments, whether through photos, videos, or shout-outs to amazing businesses. This group has blossomed into a place where people can connect over their shared love for the area, discover hidden gems, and get inspired for their next beach adventure. As the group grows, so does the sense of community and pride in everything Panama City Beach has to offer.

“I try to think outside the box about fun, free things to do in Panama City Beach. One thing I thought of was to put a list together of some of the fun photo opportunities of either the sculptures around the city or the beautifully painted art murals that dot our community that may get overlooked. So, I created a post and invited members to share their photos and locations so we could share them with the group and members could also have fun with photo opportunities.”

ESCAPE A SERENE

Perfect for beachcombing and relaxation, the delightful shores of Shell Island are just a shuttle away

TIPS FROM THE TAXI

Recreation manager Chris Green covers the island essentials

No need to travel to faraway destinations to experience island life.

Panama City Beach’s Shell Island has all the relaxinggetaway vibes of a private island without the high price tag. Cast off your worries, and set sail for the 7-mile barrier island just off St. Andrews State Park where starfish, sand dollars, and dolphins are crowd regulars.

Nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and St. Andrew Bay, the secluded island is only accessible by boat and has no restrooms, running water, picnic pavilions, or even trash cans — so be sure to pack accordingly, and remember to gather all trash before leaving.

To get there, hop on the Shell Island Ferry. It runs at the top of

the hour starting at 9 a.m. and returns at the bottom of the hour with the last shuttle returning at 4:45 p.m. According to Chris Green, recreation general manager for guest services at St. Andrews State Park, it’s best to book 24–48 hours ahead (you can do this online) to secure your spot, and arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Leave a little time to hit up the Pier Store for all those essentials you may have forgotten. Green explained that the full retail shop offers drinks, snacks, fishing gear, and sunscreen. Plus, you can rent beach chairs, umbrellas, and snorkeling gear to bring over to the island. Once you’ve crossed the bay, you’ll have minimal options from the island’s small retail gazebo.

Sunscreen! Apply prior to arrival, and make sure you pack extra for the day. “I always tell guests, ‘It’s a good day for a sunburn, and it doesn’t take long down here,’” Green advises.

A towel, beach chair, and umbrella are a must — there are no tables, chairs, or pavilions on the island.

Pack a cooler with snacks and drinks. You can pick up supplies at the Pier Store before you board, but don’t count on any food or drink once you make it to the island.

Leave no trace! Shell Island does not have trash cans on-site. Help keep the beach pristine by bringing a bag to store trash while visiting the state park.

Bring nets, goggles, masks, and snorkels so you can enjoy an underwater experience. There is an abundance of marine wildlife to see.

ADVENTURES ACROSS THE BAY

A skip, hop, or jump, there are a number of ways to get to Shell Island Shuttle over on St. Andrews State Park’s official ferry. StAndrewsShellIsland.com

Get on the pontoon craze with Shell Island Boat Rentals and Tours located at Treasure Island Marina. ShellIslandTours.com

Zip over on a rented WaveRunner from Lagoon Pontoons or Adventures at Sea. LagoonPontoon.com WaterSportsPC.com

Island Time Sailing’s Shell Island Dolphin and Snorkel Cruise promises bottlenose dolphins, education about St. Andrew Bay, and an in-water snorkel session. While tied up, guests can wade or paddleboard over to Shell Island to search for shells to take home. IslandTimeSailing.com

Charter your own intimate experience with just a captain to guide you as you navigate over to Shell Island with Blue Dolphin Tours. BlueDolphinTour.com

The shuttle will drop you and your crew off approximately 21/2 miles down the island from the shipping lanes, away from everybody.

“You basically pull up to a private beach that’s not inundated with traffic or crowds,” Green said. “The water is a little clearer, a little bluer, a little greener and has a softer current. The marine life is easier to spot because of the lagoon drop-off location. You’ll see pelicans, blue herons and, of course, bottlenose dolphins.”

And the shelling is choice. Wander the pristine beaches to find moon snails, conch shells, pin shells, periwinkles, whelk, and olive shells, all indigenous to the area. As long as they are unoccupied, you can collect as many as you like. You’ll rejuvenate your spirit surrounded by the coastal

dune grasses, and maybe spot an endangered sea turtle in the unspoiled environs that recall a Florida long ago.

“The barrier island allows you to experience nature at its best. Yes, we’re on an island, and we’re doing our thing as human beings, but to experience that natural beauty is breathtaking,” Green said. “Everybody that gets off our ferry is wowed by how gorgeous it is. It’s a really special place — a public beach with an intimate setting.”

For the 2025 season, visitors can pick up a Shell Island Survival Kit from the Pier Store with all the necessities — a disposable cooler will be packed with a bag of ice, water bottles, sunscreen, and a couple of snacks of your choice. Just bring yourself and a towel for a day of blissful fun on this island sanctuary.

Sun, Sea, and Savings

Vacation doesn’t have to break the bank — the best things in PCB are free

They say the best things in life are free, and in Panama City Beach, that’s a true statement. There is sandcastle making, trail blazing, and live music, but you can also find deep discounts for dining, accommodations, and attractions with Visit Panama City Beach’s PCB Perks campaign.

Beach It

The 27 miles of pristine beach offer a kaleidoscope of opportunities that won’t cost a dollar. With nearly 100 public access points, the sand provides the perfect backdrop for sunrise yoga, beach volleyball, a jog, or enjoying a sunset view. Collect some shells while walking the beach and checking out the marine life — you might even luck into a dolphin or stingray sighting. The best show in town, sunset, comes free of charge every night.

Wander the Trails

PCB parks provide a shady respite full of natural wonders. Visit St. Andrews State Park where you’ll find 1.5 miles of pristine beaches bordered by the Gulf and the Grand Lagoon, as well as two nature trails where migratory birds, alligators, and deer hide out. The park charges a small fee (between $2–$8), but once you’re in, nature adventures are free to seize. Camp Helen State Park offers a quieter experience along with a rare ecological wonder, Lake Powell coastal dune lake. Wander the trails, and check out the protected bird species or maybe you’ll catch sight of a bald

eagle. To immerse in the wetlands and wildlife, visit the 2,900-acre Panama City Beach Conservation Park where 24 miles of trails and boardwalks over protected habitats offer guides to local plants and animals. A pavilion area offers picnic tables, public restrooms, and an outdoor classroom.

Listen to Live Music

June through August, you can hear music filling the air around Aaron Bessant Park. Thursday nights, the amphitheater lights up with the Summer Concert Series. Bring your blankets, chairs, and picnics, and enjoy a free evening of live music.

Browse Some Shops

Window shopping doesn’t cost a thing, and PCB has plenty to keep you busy. Pier Park is packed with shops to

peruse. For something that taps into local finds, check out the Decor by the Shore trail on page 32 which features a bevy of independent boutiques and mom-and-pop shops for all those oneof-a-kind finds. If you’ve got a small budget to work with, pop into a local thrift shop like Save the Closet — which provides disaster relief to those in need — and find a wide variety of vintage treasures and stylish attire in Shop the Shore on pages 30-32.

Utilize Complimentary Amenities

Many hotels and resorts offer freebies like complimentary beach chairs and umbrella rentals, gym access, free DVDs, kid-friendly activities, events, and breakfast. The property itself can be a wonderland of free entertainment. Lazy rivers, waterslides, and miniature golf are just a few of the free amenities for guests at places like Sandpiper Beacon, Holiday Inn, and Embassy Suites. At check-in, be sure to ask your concierge for insider tips and take the opportunity to explore the property.

A year of fishing in PCB rewards with diversity aplenty

Panama City Beach — a place whose beauty is only exceeded by its diversity of ecosystems and abundance of wildlife — is a paradise for all. Along the beaches, the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico light up in the sun as they lap gently against white sand beaches. Bald eagles and ospreys stalk the flats from above, while wild blue herons and great egrets wade the shorelines in search of unsuspecting prey. Dolphins work in unison to push schools of mullet into shallow coves where they can more easily catch them, and manatees feed on grass in the shallows. Then there’s the fish, the true stars of the show. The waters that surround Panama City Beach offer endless opportunities for fishing success all year long, from trout and redfish in the backwaters, to snapper and grouper in the Gulf and everything in between. Here’s what a year in fishing looks like for us on the Gulf Coast.

Winter

Our winters are typically mild and comfortable, outside of the few days when cold fronts pass through. Inshore on the flats, our primary target is the redfish, our hardy year-round resident gamefish that easily tolerates the cool water temperatures and thrives in shallow negative tides. Most of my winter days are spent poling the shallows in search of redfish either tailing or cruising the shoreline. Once you spot them, it’s important to take your time and close the distance quietly so you don’t spook any wary fish. In these situations, I like to use light spinning tackle, but fly fishing gear is very effective, too. Half of the battle is getting stealthy and accurate presentations to the fish. I prefer to use small soft-plastic baits, either flatlined or attached to a light jig head up to about an eighth of an ounce.

When it’s overcast or too windy on the flats, I focus my efforts on wading bayous and tidal pools for large speckled trout. This is a different type of fishing altogether — the fish are rarely seen and far less skittish. Specks can be somewhat lethargic from the cold but they’re not usually spooked because they tend to stay in water at least three feet deep. I actually prefer to use bait casting equipment in

YEAR-ROUND FISHING is guided by the seasons. There are schools of redfish in the winter, while springtime is ideal for angling for sheepshead. Many species are abundant in the summer, and fall ushers in, perhaps, the best bite season of them all.

these situations and throw suspending or slowsinking twitch-bait lures because they typically entice bigger bites.

Deeper waters around the inlet, bridges, and other structures offer completely different fishing opportunities. Big bull reds, mangrove snapper, grouper, and other bottom-dwelling fish tend to stay relatively active during the cool months. Medium to medium-heavy bottom or spinning gear is enough to handle most fish. Live bait on a Carolina-style rig or soft-plastic and bucktail jigs also work well.

Spring

As winter begins to give way to the longer and warmer days of spring, the bays and coastal waters along the beaches begin to flourish with a wide variety of sea life. Along the beaches, large schools of redfish cruise just outside of the surf, searching from inlet to inlet for food. These fish are usually aggressive and can be caught on a variety of artificial lures and live baits.

In the inlets along the jetties and other submerged structures, sheepshead start to stack up in preparation for the spawn. This is when they are most concentrated and most susceptible to being caught. The best way to target sheepshead is with a live bait rigged with shrimp or fiddler crabs. Some anglers prefer a heavy lead weight to pin the bait to the bottom, but I like to use a light lead so that my bait will drift across the top of the rocks and not get eaten by pinfish or other predators. Don’t be surprised if you hook into a few redfish and pompano when targeting sheepshead since both species inhabit similar areas and eat some of the same forage.

Spanish mackerel also start to populate local waters by early spring. An aggressive fish with a voracious appetite, Spanish mackerel are a blast to catch on light tackle and a great fish for introducing new anglers to the use of artificial lures. Jigs, spoons, and small plugs are great options to throw at schools of fish chasing surface bait. Trolling is also a viable tactic and probably the most common way mackerel are targeted.

Mid-spring is when we start to see the arrival of the bigger migratory fish such as cobia, king mackerel, and tarpon. Cobia tend to show up along the beaches when the water temperature hits 70 degrees Fahrenheit, followed shortly after by king mackerel. Late May is when the first schools of tarpon can be seen migrating along our coastline, and they will be plentiful into the first part of July.

Summer

Summer is a time for early morning sunrises and late evening sunsets on the water. Hungry speckled trout and redfish rule the early morning hours when the temperature is cool, and low light gives them an advantage when stalking fish in the shallows. Topwater plugs worked along flooded reed beds can get those explosive surface strikes many anglers crave. Big bull redfish can be found lurking in the heavy current brought on by hard falling tides and feasting on the seemingly endless supply of blue crabs getting swept out toward the Gulf of Mexico.

Schools of tarpon will be on the move. As summer progresses, those fish will disappear from the beaches and become more prevalent inshore around bridges and backwaters. Big live baits such as crabs, pinfish, mullet, and live or chunk ladyfish will give you a good shot at a silver king. In the Gulf, a wide variety of snapper, grouper, mahi mahi, mackerel, jacks, triggerfish, and many other delicious, fun-to-fight fish will be around to catch and enjoy at the dinner table.

Fall

Autumn offers some of the best fishing to be had all year. With its arrival, crisp northerly winds frequently blow and changes

can be seen throughout the bays and nearshore waters. Schools of baitfish spawned in the spring are reaching maturity and stacking up in big pods where they become easy targets for all makes and models of gamefish. Mangrove snapper, redfish, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, flounder, and jacks offer plenty of action.

Inshore, the flats are teeming with life. Big schools of redfish cruise the shallows while speckled trout lie in wait in the grass, looking for an opportunity to ambush unsuspecting prey. Flounder make their way to the passes and inlets where they concentrate for a short period of time before ultimately ending up in the Gulf at one of the many nearshore reefs and wrecks along our coast.

As the water continues to cool, inshore bottom fishing heats up with snapper and grouper as they become far more aggressive and inhabit increasingly shallow depths. In open water, schooling fish such as bluefish, ladyfish, and Spanish mackerel will also be prevalent in the fall, gorging on any food source they can as they prepare to migrate south to warmer waters.

Whatever the season and whenever you come to Panama City Beach, there will be plenty of unforgettable fishing opportunities awaiting you!

Nature’s Playground

From surf to sand to trail biking and more, adventure awaits in Panama City Beach’s unparalleled natural environment

Outdoor activities in Panama City Beach usually revolve around two things: sand and surf. It’s natural that the world’s most beautiful beaches beckon locals and travelers alike, but the area also features a treasure trove of activities, sights, and places to explore that don’t include a beach towel.

DIVING AND SNORKELING

For scuba divers in search of unique underwater adventures, PCB is the place to be. Underneath its turquoise waters lies a treasure trove of natural and man-made sites spread across the northern Gulf of Mexico.

“The diving here is phenomenal,” said Todd Yarbrough, course director at Red Alert Diving , a full-service dive center and aquatic training facility. “The variation of depth, the visibility, and the conditions and the animal life are just unparalleled.” Within just a few miles of Panama City Beach, divers will find more than 50 artificial reefs, sunken ships, and barges, as well as hundreds of natural limestone reefs.

“The artificial reef system we have here is pretty great,” said Yarbrough, who started diving when he was 12. “We have everything from 400-foot-long ships to 40-foot Army tankers for people to dive on. Our shipwrecks are all within recreational limits, and they’re as clean and as safe as anything can be in our sport.” Perhaps the greatest draw — and one that appeals to all ages — is the marine life accessible around these dive sites. From amberjack to goliath grouper, and nearly everything in between, Panama City Beach’s numerous dive sites are teeming with subaquatic creatures to be discovered.

For adventure enthusiasts without a diving certification, snorkeling off the coast of St. Andrews State Park or the secluded Shell Island is the perfect way to explore the area’s turquoise waters. The Gulf’s excellent water clarity, which is even better during the fall months, allows for plentiful encounters with undersea life.

Need a place to start — or dive in? The PCB area has several local businesses that will help you train, gain certification, and even buy gear, including Red Alert Diving and others like Panama City Dive Center, Panama City Diving, Dive Locker, and Diver’s Den. These dive shops even offer diving charters if you’re looking to get on the water straightaway.

BENEATH THE WAVES

Here are five of the top wrecks and reefs to seek out in PCB

DEEP STIM III

Discover an immersive underwater marvel where art and marine life converge for an unforgettable diving adventure 31 miles off shore.

EL DORADO

This former luxury cruise liner, damaged during Hurricane Michael in October 2018, is the newest wreck to join the area’s list of artificial reefs.

BLACK BART

Located six miles off shore, this old oil field supply ship serves as a memorial to Capt. Charles Bartholomew, the U.S. Navy’s Supervisor of Salvage in Panama City.

USS STRENGTH

This former U.S. Navy minesweeper is one of the most inviting wrecks along the Gulf Coast. Sunk in 1987, the 184-foot ship is located about 6 miles off the coast.

EMPIRE MICA

Built in 1941, this 465-foot ocean tanker was torpedoed by a German U boat, and one of its propellers now sits at Captain Anderson’s restaurant.

LIBERTY SHIP

This 441-foot World War II Liberty Ship is located in about 100 feet of water and about 10 miles offshore.

YOUR CAMPING HOW-TO

When you’re going camping, it never hurts to make a list. Here are some of our best suggestions:

Sunscreen

Beach toys

Fishing supplies

Life jackets

Paddleboards and surfboards

Kayaks

Citronella candles

Bicycles and helmets

Golf carts (Some properties restrict golf carts to certain areas.)

CAMPING

Camping in Panama City Beach is an experience like no other. Not only can you sleep out under the stars, hike beautiful trails, and roast marshmallows over a campfire — you can do it all within walking distance of the sparkling Gulf of Mexico!

PCB is home to one of the most popular state parks in Florida, St. Andrews State Park , where visitors can explore more than 1,200 acres of unique coastal terrain. This state park is perfect for tent campers and folks with RVs. With 176 campsites — for tents and RVs up to 45 feet — in the pinewoods near Grand Lagoon, the park has the largest selection of camping accommodations in the area. For the glampers of the world, there are three eco-tents available for rent with enhanced amenities including a queensize bed, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. The park offers more than 1.5 miles of sugar-white beachfront, and for those who like to hike or simply stroll through nature, there are two main inland trails. Heron Pond Trail takes visitors through a flatwood pine forest and past a historic turpentine still, while Gator Lake Trail offers a scenic view of Gator

Lake. Other activities include watching wading birds at Buttonbush Marsh, shore and pier fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, and taking the boat shuttle to Shell Island , a pristine barrier island across the channel from the park.

BIKING AND HIKING

Walking is wonderful, but bicycling might get you through paradise quicker. With beautiful hiking and bike-friendly trails — plus plenty of bike rental shops — Panama City Beach is a trailblazer’s dream come true.

The Panama City Beach Conservation Park spans 2,912 acres and offers more than 24 miles of bike paths, trails, and boardwalks. The 12 designated trails range from less than a mile to 11 miles long. An additional mile of boardwalks through the park’s wetlands allows bird watchers unparalleled opportunities to view migrating and local birds.

For the explorer who wants a smoother, less challenging path to follow than those found in the Conservation Park, Gayle’s Trails are a great option. These paved pathways were named after former Mayor Gayle F. Oberst, who played a major role in securing the grants that allowed for the trails’ development.

The Gayle’s Trails trailheads are found in Aaron Bessant Park and Frank Brown Park . Gayle’s Trails offer cyclists the choice of three routes with a round trip of up to 19.5 miles. Visitors can choose to walk or bike the trails found within the parks’ boundaries, or they can follow them from park to park. They can also explore the many paths that lead away from the parks, such as the trail that runs from Frank Brown Park to the Panama City Beach Conservation Park (2.8 miles), or the stretch that parallels Highway 79 North to the Intracoastal Waterway.

PADDLEBOARDING

Beach lovers can surf the waves via paddleboard on Panama City Beach’s protected and open waters like the Grand Lagoon, St. Andrew Bay and various cold springs, rivers, and lakes in the region. While paddleboarding, guests can spy rays, fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and other wildlife beneath the water’s surface. Equipment is easily rented from vendors including PCB SUP.

WHAT BIKE FITS YOUR RIDE?

How do you know what kind of bike you are best suited for? Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Single-speed vs. Multi-speed

Traditionally, beach cruisers are designed as single-speed bikes — that is, they don’t have any gearing to change the resistance in the pedal stroke. That said, there are 3-speed and 7-speed versions. Having multiple gears is great for hilly terrain.

Pedal Brakes vs. Handlebar Brakes

Most beach cruisers brake simply by pedaling backwards, a centuryold technology known as coaster brakes. Handlebar brakes also are

easy to use, but they don’t have as clean a look and might require a bit more maintenance.

Fit and Comfort

When it comes to style, low-rider cruisers have a high “cool factor” and are a great choice for short rides around the beach. Longer rides are better when you’re seated in the upright position of a classic beach cruiser frame, which allows you to relax your arms and provides for a more efficient pedal stroke so that you are not wasting energy.

A pair of sprawling parks play host to a slew of sporting events, hosting athletes and their families year-round.

Across America, sports fields come alive as 6-year-olds laugh and chase soccer balls, metal baseball bats ping, and football shoulder pads clatter. Athletes of all ages, their families, and spectators travel the country for sporting events and tournaments every year. According to the “State of the Industry” report compiled by the Sports Events and Tourism Association in 2023, spending associated with the sports travel sector was $52.2 billion, and Americans took a record 204.9 million sports event-related trips.  Panama City Beach makes a beautiful backdrop for those “playcations,” where teams and families can participate in a sporting event and enjoy the World’s Most Beautiful Beaches. With two major sports parks in the area, families can enjoy time on the sand and playing in the ocean paired with their sports travel.

FRANK BROWN PARK

Frank Brown Park has catered to sports enthusiasts and festivalgoers since 1978. The sprawling 200acre park offers something for everyone. The Aquatic Center holds water aerobics year-round, has an interactive 5,000-squarefoot splash pad and kiddie pool, a springboard, and diving well, and the 50-meter Olympic pool has lanes for competitions or casual swimming. The nature trails offer glimpses of the area’s incredible biodiversity. The park is also home to soccer fields, basketball courts, and baseball and softball diamonds. Bring your furry friend to stretch their legs at the dog park, or pack a fishing pole to cast a line in the property’s stocked fishing pond.

The sports park regularly hosts regional and national events for children and adults, including the United States Fastpitch Association, Grand Slam Baseball, and the World Sports League.

Skateboarding has also joined the scene, with a new $350,000 entry-level skate park in the works. Indoor pickleball and basketball courts are now open

Publix Sports Park, the younger and more technologically advanced sibling of Frank Brown, opened in 2019 and operates under Publix Super Markets’ sponsorship. In

five years, the park has hosted more than 260 tournaments and 433,000 visitors. The $42 million project’s popularity has surged as it has added new amenities in its first few years. Plus, Coca-Cola signed on this year as a sponsor for the next 10 years, a major step toward the planned indoor 130,000-squarefoot sports complex.

features like AstroTurf, Z-Cap cooling technology turf, and Qualite LED lighting make this a versatile venue for holding games in any weather.

Since opening, the park has added a sound system, improvements to the grounds, bleachers for the championship field, and a netting system for baseball. In May 2023, the 20,000-square-foot skate park designed by Team Pain Skate Park Designs and Construction opened to skateboard enthusiasts. It boasts half pipes, quarter pipes, snake runs, and multifunctional spaces for skating events. The park has an Olympic run and many features that appeal to all ages and skill levels.

Looking ahead, the sports park has hired an architect to create plans for a 130,000-square-foot indoor multipurpose facility for court sports, meetings, events, competitions, and e-sports. A new parking area with pickleball layout for everyday usage and tournaments is also on the horizon. Turf will transform the grass fields on the park’s north end into versatile low-maintenance sporting venues. Additional netting on fields and a new scoreboard are also planned. One of the venue’s prominent fields has been renamed “Pete Edwards Field,” in honor of the influential Bay County sports leader who helped host the area’s first travel football events in the 1970s.

BAY POINT GOLF CLUB

OFFERING THE ONLY Nicklaus

Design in the Panhandle, Bay Point Golf Club boasts a sprawling locale carved from Northwest Florida’s natural terrain of scrub oaks, pines, and saltwater marshes. You’ll find this course’s layout unique, challenging, and unforgettable.

Renovated with new TifEagle greens and reopened in recent years after the effects of Hurricane Michael, the Jack Nicklaus-designed course is set against the backdrop of St. Andrew Bay and a marshland wildlife sanctuary. The conversion of all 18 greens created more consistent putting surfaces with faster green speeds year-round. In addition, 23 renovated green-side bunkers complement the greens and include sand and drainage.

When you get hungry, swing by Bar 72 for pub-style and seafood fare. Bar 72 is open for lunch daily, and it serves breakfast and dinner on select days.

PICKLEBALL SWEEPS THE BEACH

SIMPLE, FUN, ACCESSIBLE, AND SOCIABLE, it’s no wonder that pickleball is recognized as the fastest-growing sport in the country.

The game combines elements of tennis, badminton, and pingpong, according to the USAPA, and is played — singles or doubles — on a badminton-size court with a modified tennis net. Paddles, larger than those for pingpong but smaller than a tennis racquet, are used to strike a plastic, perforated ball similar to a Wiffle ball. Players serve underhand and cross court. The serve must bounce once but never twice, and the “kitchen,” or the non-volley zone, is off limits. The game is typically played to a score of 11 or 15.

Panama City Beach first implemented open play at Frank Brown Park’s indoor facility. Soon after, the Lyndell Complex saw expansion, replacing parking space for permanent courts. With increasing demand for the fun-for-all-ages sport, the number of public courts has continued to increase in PCB The Publix Sports Park will soon be adding indoor courts to their repertoire as well.

Gather the kids, parents, and grandparents and hit the courts — pickleball is truly the sport for all!

You don’t have to travel far for soft, white sandy beaches and clear emerald waters! We love it so much that we even invested in a property so that we could visit it more often!

TIME FOR FACE TIME

PCB offers 160,000 feet of meeting space designed for events, conferences, and gatherings.

For generations, Panama City Beach has made all manner of meet-ups memorable.

Settings matter when people come together as families, businesses, classmates, or clubs to reflect on the past, plan the future, mark milestones, or join in shared interests. Coming to PCB as the culmination of the work of planning an event, meeting, celebration, or reunion is like rewarding yourself with a vacation — one that is world-class and postcard perfect. Indeed, Tripadvisor has named PCB one of the top three beaches in the United States. It’s little wonder that one trip to PCB tends to lead to another. Family reunions in the area often result in the return of smaller family units, and business travelers frequently come back on their own time.

REDISCOVER FAMILY & FRIENDS

In recent years, PCB tourism leaders have intentionally replaced college and university spring break activities with a more familyfriendly vibe. That transition has brought about additional chain hotels, new dining, shopping and attraction options, as well as the Publix Sports Park, added in recent years. As a result, the area is seeing a steady flow of family reunions. This segment of group visitors is primarily regional, traveling to PCB from Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and Virginia. Their preferred attraction is the beach itself, and their favored accommodation is the condominium.

And the fun does not have to stop at the water’s edge. Take your reunion on a dolphin tour, play nine holes at a premier golf club, or relax on the deck of a beachside restaurant serving up world-class seafood.

Here are few more ideas to ramp up your reunion:

• Shop at Pier Park

This massive, open-air retail destination has everything from local boutiques to big-name stores.

• Splash out at Shipwreck Island Water Park

This 15-acre park has a professionally trained aquatics staff, raging rapids, a lazy river, and waterslides for all ages.

Military reunions are also a longstanding tradition in PCB. Members of the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines began meeting here with the advent of World War II veteran events.

STRATEGIZE IN PARADISE

PCB is also ideal for small group business. Four conference resorts offer 180,000 square feet of meeting space, and 20,000 rooms are available for booking across the area’s numerous hotels and condominiums.

As a full-service convention and visitors bureau, Visit Panama City Beach is also uniquely positioned to provide meeting planners from all market segments with a variety of services including site selection, request for proposal (RFP) development, assistance with housing, suggested itineraries and day trips, welcome packets, and a staff table at your event to answer questions and provide materials about the area.

At Embassy Suites by Hilton, enjoy Gulf of Mexico views from your seat

at the conference table. The resort hotel offers six meeting rooms and 255 guest rooms. Located directly on the beach and within a mile of Pier Park, employees will be all too pleased to meet in paradise.

The best part? When the business is completed, the sparkling Gulf of Mexico is never far away. And you can’t forget the Southern hospitality. It shines through in PCB, whether you’re a friend or a stranger — it’s part of the package here.

PCB CELEBRATIONS 101: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

From birthdays and bachelorettes to proposals and anniversaries — there are plenty of reasons to celebrate. Why not bring the party to paradise? We asked the experts for tips on booking a group vacay in Panama City Beach, and here’s what they said:

Book early and be flexible. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, many previously postponed events are coming to fruition — and demand is higher than ever.

Hire a planner. These pros will keep you focused and on schedule so that your event day is perfect.

Stay safe. Pay close attention to our beach warning flags and local surf conditions. Wear sunscreen — you don’t want to ruin your good time with a burn.

Relax. Be patient, be kind, and this place will reward you with memories to last a lifetime.

Date Night Any Night IN

From amazing afternoons to unforgettable evenings, explore romantic adventures that fit your date style

BEACH WALKS, sunset toasts, stargazing, and unfettered relaxation bring romantics together at PCB.

SPEND “WE TIME” WITH YOUR PARTNER whether it’s an outdoor adventure or intimate stroll.

Along walk on the beach holding hands, letting the world drop away for a few moments — the quintessential romantic moment that keeps couples coming back to the beach year after year. But if you’re looking for a more personalized romantic getaway, try out one of these three-stop itineraries to suit your style.

BEACH LOVERS

Take the Shell Island Shuttle to hang out on the beach. What’s more romantic than a private beach away from the throngs of people where you can stake an umbrella, wallow in the surf, and walk along the shore looking for the perfect shell? Hop the shuttle over to Shell Island, a 7-mile stretch of undeveloped barrier island just off St. Andrews State Park. Be sure to pack lots of sunscreen, a cooler

with plenty of hydrating beverages, and an umbrella to cuddle under.

Grab a drink and toast at sunset. After a full day lolling on the beach, it seems only right to toast the sunset. Grab a seat out on the deck or pier of any PCB restaurant, and order a cocktail or daiquiri before raising your glass as the sun sets over the Gulf of Mexico.

Cozy up to a beach bonfire and s’mores. Make your way down to the beach for the perfect send-off to a day spent on the sand. Imagine a cozy bonfire just for the two of you, a hammock to swing in the gentle breeze while listening to the ocean, and all the supplies for roasting s’mores. Enlist help from local outfitter Back Beach Rentals to cover the details — you just bring the romance.

WINE ENTHUSIASTS

Attend a tasting at Duplin Winery. Tap into PCB’s newest attraction, a 38,000-squarefoot winery that features five tasting bars, an

immersive winemaker area where you can bottle your own wine, and welcoming porches for sitting and sipping. Wine enthusiasts can grab a flight, saunter over the pier to the lakefront pavilion, and take in the romantic landscape of flowers and shrubs on the 70-acre property.

Sip and sail into the sunset. Continue your wine-filled escapades aboard a PCB sunset cruise. A number of area vendors offer various packages for a romantic ocean outing. From dolphin-spying aboard the Sea Screamer to drinking in music and wine on

the Footloose Catamaran, there are many romantic options to experience the sun setting over the Gulf of Mexico.

Wine and dine at Firefly. A perennial winner of Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence, Firefly brings the romance with its Mediterranean bistro atmosphere under a grand old oak tree. Wine enthusiasts sip on some of the most exquisitely prepared fare around — they’ve nabbed the Florida Trend’s Golden Spoon Award nine years in

a row. And for the discerning wine drinker, ask about the exclusive Firefly Wine Locker.

THE ACTIVE COUPLE

Choose an ocean expedition, above or below. Grab a Panhandle Shipwreck Trail passport from a local dive shop. Scuba divers can get five of the 12 stops stamped while exploring the PCB coast. If snorkeling is more your speed, mask up and check out the stingrays, angel fish, and other marine life

from the jetties at St. Andrews State Park. If you’d rather stay above water, check out one of the local outfitters to rent a catamaran, kayak, or paddleboard for the day.

Grab a picnic lunch. You’ll need to refuel after a day on the water and Liza’s Kitchen on Thomas Drive has the fixings. Their soups and salads travel well and can be packaged to go. Or try On The Fly to make your picnic upscale. A concept from the owners of Firefly, they offer fresh-made sushi and artisan soups, sandwiches, and charcuterie packaged for takeout. Once you’ve secured your picnic lunch, head to Camp Helen State Park for a shady respite to relax and enjoy a meal in the outdoors, far removed from the bustle of the beach.

Explore Camp Helen State Park. After a leisurely lunch, hit up some trails. The 180acre state park has an assortment of trails running through the five distinctive natural communities of Camp Helen. You may observe a bald eagle flying over, see one of the protected bird species, like a snowy plover, or spot a rare Choctawhatchee beach mouse.

PARENTS TIME-OUT

Enjoy a couples massage at Serenity Spa. All those parenting hours of homework help, ferrying to and from extracurriculars, and meal prepping can knot up a body. Drop the kids off, and head to Bluegreen’s Bayside Resort for the first step in unwinding from all those parental responsibilities. Serenity Spa will pamper you and your partner with a couples massage that sends you to a sanctuary where stress melts away.

Dine and imbibe at Hunt & Gather. PCB has some great family dining options, but Hunt & Gather is one for the grownups. The menu is divided into inventive shareables and small plates so you can eat lovers style. The Wild Boar Bolognese brings all the “Lady and the Tramp” vibes with its twirlable pasta and rich sauce. Don’t leave without a slice of creme brulee cheesecake to add a little sweetness to your evening out.

Take a turn on the SkyWheel. Before you head back to family life, make your way to Pier Park for a ride on the Skywheel. The deluxe observation wheel sits 200 feet above the ground, offering incredible panoramic views of PCB. Snuggle together in the gondola, and enjoy those last moments of freedom before plugging back into family life.
