At Sandestin®, you might catch a pompano in the Gulf of Mexico, a speckled trout in Choctawhatchee Bay and a bass in a small pond, all in the same day. A stay between the beach and the bay means fishing opportunities abound. Fishing in the bay or at the beach requires a license, but guests may catch and release in resort ponds and fish from The Baytowne Pier on the property without a license. Stop at the bike shop beside the marina to purchase bait and poles if needed. Satisfy a yearning to go offshore by booking a charter trip out of the marina. When you return to solid ground, the Marina Bar & Grill will be happy to cook your catch for you to enjoy!

BOATING At the 226-slip marina, you can rent a pontoon boat and explore the bay, or make the short trip to popular Crab Island. Rentals are available for full or half days. Pack up some lunch and your crew, and hit the open water! Looking for a more all-inclusive boating experience? Check out the new Freedom Chaser Crab Island Cruise. This fully enclosed luxury boat has it all, including a captain and deckhand, coolers, a sound system, floats and snorkeling gear.

GOLF Some would consider golf a relaxing sport, but others treat it as a heart-racing competition adventure. Either way, at Sandestin® the fairways aren’t far. The Links Golf Club is a shot-maker’s course along the bay, while the course at Baytowne Golf Club stretches across the property from the beach to the bay. Navigate the marshes and pine trees of the Raven Golf Club on your way to No. 18, which was rated the toughest hole on the 2006 PGA Champions Tour. The resort offers two complimentary four-hour bike rides per day for guests that booked direct and is home to many bike paths. Visit the Jolee Island trails for picturesque scenery and a peaceful atmosphere.

BRIGHTENS FUTURES

Mission extends to children at home and across the world BY EVGENIYA STETSENKO

hen the Becnel family established the Sandestin® Foundation for Kids in 2011, it did so with the goal of making a difference in the lives of children and providing them with better futures. Today, the mission of the Foundation is unchanged: “To provide support immediately, when it’s needed most, to children throughout the community and abroad.” That support is critical to the point, in some cases, of saving lives. Always, it brings comfort to families. In 2018, for example, a Fort Walton Beach couple needed help with a mounting stack of medical bills. Their 5-year-old son was undergoing immunotherapy following kidney transplant surgery. Support from SDFK made it possible for the family to spend time together during the period of the boy’s recovery without the added stress of financial worry. The Foundation’s mission is the common denominator among initiatives 20

that have included drilling water wells in a remote community in Tanzania, helping children with developmental challenges and providing families with essential financial assistance. Zaya was born with atrioventricular canal defect (AVCD), which affects a part of the heart that connects the atria to the ventricles. She required heart surgery as an infant. As Zaya recovered, family and friends helped out, but when more assistance was needed, Zaya’s mother Rosita reached out to SDFK. Zaya had been prescribed a regimen of vitamins that must be refrigerated. When a power outage ruined the vitamins, foundation staff quickly found a way to resupply needed supplements. Rosita said she was awed by the immediate response and was immensely grateful. More challenges were forthcoming. Medical personnel closely monitored Zaya’s health and development. She was diagnosed with Down syndrome and additionally had physical issues that interfered with her speech.

ZAYA, born with a heart defect and later diagnosed with Down syndrome, keeps a bright and determined spirit.

Rosita, worried but resolute, sought out therapists capable of helping Zaya overcome her challenges. Zaya, now 3, shares the fighting spirit that characterizes her family. With remarkable tenacity, she fights daily to learn new skills. Throughout, SDFK and its staff have unhesitatingly given Zaya and her family the support and resources needed. “The goal here is that she becomes able to communicate effectively and continue therapy,” Rosita said. “That is our next step in this journey. As heartbreaking as these challenges can be for any parent, it is also inspiring that Zaya has received so much support from the Sandestin® Foundation for Kids.” Zaya is indeed making strides, thanks in large part to the recently developed neurovascular functional therapy (NV therapy) that she has been receiving for two years. She now completes a growing list of tasks on her own, enjoys helping Rosita with clean-up duties and making her 5-month-old brother laugh. Zaya’s future is looking bright and equates to the kind of success that inspires the SDFK to help more children. “They say it takes a village to raise a child, but raising a child with developmental and health challenges takes the whole city and more,” Rosita said. “We are so thankful for all the support we received from the foundation and the hope they gave us for Zaya’s remarkable future.” Today, Sara Becnel, Sandestin® Golf and Beach Resort’s vice president of development and co-trustee of SDFK, remains proud of their efforts, granting their success to the foundation’s many volunteers. “We are so grateful to our community for the support of Sandestin® Foundation for Kids and the volunteers who donate their time on behalf of the organization to make it a success,” said Becnel. “Donations raised for the foundation aid in supporting our local youth and their families as well as allow us to assist a selected handful of nonprofit organizations located abroad. We love to be able to help these families and children and could not do it without the support of our staff and this wonderful community. We’re honored to be able to positively impact these children and their families.” SANDESTIN.COM

JENNIFER HANKINS Weddings, Meetings and Special Events Manager 1. How long have you worked at Sandestin®? I started my career here in Sandestin® 15 years ago. I can’t believe it has been that long! I started as an intern, working as a concierge from 2006–2008. I did go to work for another company on the property for 10 years and then boomeranged back to Sandestin® in 2018 when I took the wedding manager position. I am truly blessed to get to do something I love every day!

2. What is the best part of working at the resort? The best part of working at the resort is the relationships I have made with my brides, their families and my colleagues. Our team is like family to me and I am truly blessed to work with them everyday. Some of our couples and their families also become like family to me and I get to be a part of their Journey for longer than just one year of planning their wedding.

3. During your career at Sandestin®, is there a particular moment that stands out as your favorite? It’s really hard to pick just one moment that stands out when I get to be a part of one of the most important days in a couple’s life. They are all so special and beautiful. If I had to pick just one moment though it would be hosting one of the first wedding events on the Hotel Effie rooftop pool deck.

4. When you aren’t working, what are your favorite things to do? When I am not working, I love to hang out with my fur baby, Tide. He is the best! Anyone that knows me knows I love college football — Roll Tide and Hotty Toddy! I also love hanging out with my

friends. Some of the fun things we do are hanging out on the water, going sailing and boating, trips to Disney and pretty much just traveling anywhere. I also love to hunt and fish with my friends and my dad.

5. Why should people have their wedding festivities at Sandestin®? We have a beautiful resort with so many things to offer our couples and their friends and family. Our wide variety of venue locations really sets us apart. We have beautiful lawn spaces, locations on the bay, renovated ballroom spaces, a stunning rooftop venue and, of course, our breathtaking beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. Our couples can host different events like bridesmaids brunches, welcome parties, rehearsal dinners, bonfires on the beach and farewell brunches. The wedding team also goes above and beyond to make every couple feel special and that their day is everything they dreamed of.

6. What is your favorite thing about Sandestin®, as a resort? I love all of the festivals and events that the resort hosts. My favorites are the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic (it’s cool that I get to support my friends that enter too), the gumbo festival, wine festival and beer festival.

7. If there was one thing that you wish everyone knew about Sandestin®, what would that be? How truly beautiful the resort is and the amazing team who is like one big family. The Sandestin® team is always ready to help our guests make beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
