Take steps to maximize your billion RESEARCHERS HAVE discovered an odd uniformity among higher-order animals. Species as diverse as hummingbirds, elephants and human beings are all entitled, on average, to one billion heartbeats in a lifetime. Now, of course, the hummingbird, whose heart rate can reach 1,260 beats per minute, runs through its billion a lot more quickly than a pachyderm with its heart rate of about 30 beats per minute. And, there are many other factors that may disrupt progress toward a billion: congenital defects, disease, accidental deaths, warfare, etc. But all of us would do well to be mindful that heartbeats are not in infinite supply and to strive to make the most of our billion. Forty years ago, a family member suggested to me that when we are born, we are allotted a certain number of miles on our personal odometer, and it is up to us to choose either the fast lane or an alternative. That Cruddy Season A doctor’s advice on what to do if you come down with the flu by PETE REINWALD

Yet we remain susceptible. October generally marks the start of flu season. As always, it’ll peak during winter and last into spring. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, urges everybody at least 6 months old to get a seasonal flu vaccine in early fall, before flu season begins, and certainly by the end of October. To get a vaccine, the Florida Department of Health recommends that you check with your doctor, local health department or even a nearby drugstore or food store, including Walgreens, CVS, Publix and Winn-Dixie. Most insurance plans cover flu vaccinations without an out-of-pocket expense, the White-Wilson Medical Center said. Some organizations offer them for free. In Panama City, Avicenna Clinic said it’s partnering with Walgreens to provide free flu shots on. Check their store websites for more details.

h oh, you think. Here it is fall, and you have a headache and a sore throat. Your sinuses are congested. Your muscles ache, and you have chills. You might have the flu. Doctors say that if you’re otherwise healthy and not at risk of flu complications, here’s what to do: Take it easy. “For the most part, the flu is a very common occurrence,” said Dr. Chinh Vien Van of the White-Wilson Medical Center, which offers health care services throughout the Emerald Coast. “For folks who do get it, all they need to do is to get adequate rest and get lots of hydration over the course of the first 24 to 48 hours of their symptoms.” Also, he said, people who suspect they might have the flu should stay away from work or school, where the virus can spread quickly. “It’s a condition that is predicated on congregation,” Van said. He said that helps explain why the flu tends to spread more easily in the northern states, where people stay inside when the weather turns colder. Here in Florida and on the Emerald Coast, we stay outside longer and thereby tend to spread out.

This marks the clinic’s first year in the partnership, said office manager Vivian Mohamed. “Hopefully it’ll be a success and we’ll continue to do it,” she said. The CDC cautions that some people shouldn’t get the flu shot. They include people who have life-threatening allergies to flu vaccine or to ingredients in the vaccine. If you have doubts or concerns, check with your doctor. “It is important that those who can be vaccinated are,” the White-Wilson Medical Center said in an email statement through Leslie Moland, its director of marketing and public relations. “In keeping with our mission and vision, our ultimate goal is to stop the spread of flu and to minimize its impact on our community. The best prevention we have against the flu is the flu vaccine.” The vaccine’s effectiveness varies by year. The 2018-19 season, which ended in May, wasn’t as severe as the previous season. The 2017-18 flu season in the U.S. saw 959,000 associated hospitalizations and 79,400 deaths, most of them age 65 and older, according to CDC estimates. Before every flu season, U.S. health officials

establish a vaccine based on predictions on the coming flu strain. That explains why it’s more effective in some years than others. “Last year, the vaccine was somewhat effective in preventing flu,” Van said. “But the year before that, the vaccine missed its mark.” He especially recommends flu shots for people who have chronic diseases, for women who are pregnant or for elderly people who have health problems. People who get the vaccine can get the flu, but their symptoms generally will be milder and of shorter duration, he said. To help avoid the flu, experts say, stay away from crowds. To help keep it from spreading, keep your hands washed and your coughs and sneezes contained. Van said people who get the flu should see a doctor if they’re not better after 24 to 48 hours. “But the majority of the time,” he said, “if they can just stay home and rest, they will get better on their own.” Sources: Florida Department of Health, Mayo Clinic Flu Shots: The Florida Department of Health offers a list of places to get a flu shot. IF YOU GET THE FLU: ➸ Consider layered apparel for body temperature changes. ➸ Do not share cups and eating utensils. ➸ Do not take aspirin products without physician approval. ➸ Drink plenty of fluids. ➸ Get plenty of rest. ➸ Over-the-counter cold or cough medicines may also relieve some flu symptoms. Check with your doctor. ➸ Sleep and take it easy. ➸ Take acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin) to relieve your fever and aches. ➸ Wash your hands frequently.

How to Recognize a Stroke, Because Every Second Counts … By Janice Dunlap, ARNP

THE FACT IS STROKES are a common occurrence in everyday life and the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Although they are common among the elderly, strokes can happen to anyone. Recognizing when a stroke occurs and acting quickly is key to lessening the disability from a stroke. Consider that 80 percent of the time a stroke can be prevented by controlling common risk factors. Taking medications prescribed for things like high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, can help reduce your chance of having a stroke. Smoking, on the other hand, is a lifestyle choice that can increase your risk of a stroke. Although we can control some of the risk factors to help reduce the chance of a stroke, it is difficult to know when one will occur and who will be affected. I had a patient who was in his 40s that had a sudden onset of numbness and tingling in his right hand as well as difficulty speaking. His only risk factor was high blood pressure, and even that was not significant. He had no family history of stroke, and there were no other risk factors present … yet he suffered a stroke. The patient called 911 immediately and even though he could not speak, emergency services were dispatched to his home. He was at the hospital 45 minutes after the onset of symptoms and had a 99 percent recovery. His life is back to the way it was before, and that is because he acted quickly. Many times symptoms occur on one side of the body. Remember the signs of a stroke with the acronym FAST:

Unfortunately, the typical stroke victim will start to experience some numbness or tingling on one side of the body and dismiss the symptoms. Oftentimes the person having a stroke will lay down to get some rest and wake up to worsening symptoms. In these instances, they may have missed the window to receive the clot-busting drug called TPA. Intravenous TPA is available for patients that qualify, but it has to be administered within 4 1/2 hours of a stroke. Not everyone is eligible for the drug, but it is the only intravenous treatment method that can help reverse the effects of a stroke. It is crucial that you get to the hospital as soon as possible after a stroke. Early medical treatment is key to minimizing the disabilities caused by a stroke. If you experience any signs or symptoms of a stroke, call 911 or go to the hospital immediately. It is important to understand that you should not try to schedule an appointment with the doctor, but instead go directly to the emergency room. When a stroke victim arrives at the emergency room, they can expect to receive prompt intervention with a CAT scan of the head, lab work and an evaluation from a physician. If a stroke has occurred, the patient can expect to remain in the hospital for three to five days, or longer, if the stroke is severe. Symptoms of a stroke include:

» FACE: check for a new facial droop. » ARMS: raise both arms and check for a new drift or weakness. » SPEECH: repeat a simple sentence and listen for new slurring or inability to say the words. » TIME: if any of the above are present, call 911 immediately for medical attention.

These symptoms will appear suddenly, so it is important to act fast if you or someone you know has experienced any of them. When it comes to recovering from a stroke, every second counts.
