BOND STREET STATION Hawkins/Brown- Arup

Platforms and Tunnels Design and Co-ordination


The new-build station comprises two deep level east-west platforms which emerge at street level via two new ticket halls south of Oxford Street in the heart of London‘s West End with connections to the existing London. Underground Station. The station will be one of the busiest central stations along the Crossrail line. !e whole Crossrail- Underground interchange will serve 230,000 people daily when completed in 2017-2018. The station at street level is represented by a single storey structure corresponding broadly to the site footprint at both locations and the Tunnel Ventilation Shaft (TVS) Structures serving the Platform and Running Tunnels approximately 25 metres below ground level.


As one of the key team members I was responsible for the design and coordination of the Platforms and Tunnels environment. During the 5 months I spent in the ARUP London office, I experienced all the benefits of a multi- disciplinary working environment.


Role description: • Delivered RIBA Stage F integrated 3D model • Implemented the concept and details developed by the C100 design team • GRC panelling strategy • Integrated and tunnels fittings and fixtures • Coordinated Eastern ticket hall MEP (Arup) • Coordinated C 121 Structural • Attended Design Reviews, Construction Reviews and team pin ups; resented the work and discussing ideas and solutions • Prepared drawings, diagrams and brochures for client meetings and presentations

Russian Impressionism Museum Context

The museum is located within publicly accessible gardens inside the precincts of the historic Bolshevik Factory on Leningradsky Prospekt in Moscow. The Factory was founded in 1855 by Adolf Sioux, a French industrialist and entrepreneur and was the first building in Moscow equipped with electric light. Clad in finely perforated metal sheeting, the museum’s two-storey circular volume takes its form from what was previously a storage facility at the Factory. This circular form establishes a clear organisational pattern, providing a sequence of radial exhibition spaces. The scheme provides c. 500 sqm of distinctive, contemporary and flexible exhibition space, as well as dedicated, conditioned and fully secure delivery, storage and conservation areas, ensuring that the museum complies with the latest security and environmental audits and can host works of art from national and international collections. The new museum is destined to be one of the pre-eminent cultural venues in Moscow, celebrating one of Russia’s most important if hitherto unknown artistic movements.

Russian Impressionism Museum Elevations The permanent exibition The main purpose of the permanent exhibition is to tell a detailed story about Russian Impressionism as the art movement, which appeared in the 1870-s and underwent various stages of development up to the present day. After visiting the permanent exhibition of the Museum any guest should be able to understand when, where, how, and by whom and which historic period of Russian Art Impressionism did appear; what is the essence of its relationship with the preceding painting styles and how did Impressionism evolve.

European analogies and from other trends of Russian Art. Russian Impressionism paved the way for the world known as the Russian Avant-garde movement (Mikhail Larionov, Kazimir Malevitch, Vassily Kandinsky and others), which would never have succeeded without going through an important Impressionism stage. Thus, such an educational task requires the provision/presentation of large quantities of information for the museum visitors.

Kericho Cathedral External View

The inception of the Cathedral for the Diocese of Kericho in Kenya is driven by the aspiration to provide a beautiful and inspiring cathedral of lasting quality that is also functional. The proposed site for Kericho Cathedral is located in Kericho Town in South West Kenya, approximately 250 km from Nairobi. It lies within the Highlands, west of the Great Rift Valley, enjoying magnificent views across the tea plantations and surrounding hills. The site’s aspect and location provides an incredible opportunity for a Cathedral that reaches out to its extended community; both visually and physically in its setting in the slope. The shaping of the Cathedral’s space and the very structure of the building - whose stone plinth and vaulted timber ribs will be exposed and articulated in a very strikingly crafted, honest and beautifully clear way - will give local materials new qualities. The palette of materials is a true reflection of and symbol of faith, simplicity and fragility, with consideration of the rural and African context.

The building features a fluid metal skin that expands forming independently controlled bays, allowing natural light into the building and naturally ventilating the facade The roof is a parametric exploration using attractor points in order to generate a dynamic, non- standard, continuous structure system with gradient transition. The roof form follows a series of parametric definitions which were modelled with variable control points enabling adjustments throughout the design process.

Centre for Religion and Peace Top, Internal Views Wining entrance of the competition organized by JB Builders about a new religion centre in Battersea / Nine Elms, where people from different religious background can relax and pray. The project was elaborated in collaboration with EFZin Architects. Based on the office approach, I elaborated the 3D concept and visualisations. Keeping the historical concept that temples, mosques and churches are landmarks.; the design is iconic and works as a stand alone element. The freedom of movement the religion centre gives to the visitor, is being expressed in the freedom of the design forms. The design appears abstract, monumental, sculptural,like a piece of art. Internally, the interaction of light is contributing as an important design factor. Historically the indirect light has been widely used to spiritual spaces. In this case, the building has glass roofs. The internal areas are bright and atmospheric. Trees and internal gardens contribute to the relaxation and comfort of the visitors. The structure is timber with glullam beams filled with triangle laminated wood cells. The facade is structural ribbed wall. The cladding for the facade is constructed with a thermoformable material.

The design concept was having faith in religion and faith in life.

Office Tower Context, External View

Context

Located in a mixed residential and cultural area, the new glass tower has 18 stories (70m) and measures 24.000 square meters. The purpose was to insert a new, glass and concrete building in the old centre of Bucharest. The main challenge was to figure out a way of combining architectural styles and respecting the surrounding buildings.

The ground floor of the building houses: the entrance , reception, public gallery conference room and cafe.

The mezzanine incorporates the conference area and showroom. The superior floors are exclusively for offices. In the two basements, the building is providing parking and technical spaces.

Emergent digital design methods External View Incorporating Digital Morphogenesis within Architectural design, by adopting the technique of Draping Architecture combined with Cloth Simulation plug-in within 3DS Max.

The design technique for the concept involved the incorporation of draping architecture as it provides the ability to design any form, to become more fluid and organically formed.

Draping Architecture is a way of designing, taking ideas from the drape of the cloths or of other materials. It is obvious that through this kind of Architecture, the developed forms are more fluid and more natural. It can be affirmed that Draping Architecture is a combination between fabric and organic architecture. Additionally, exploring the methods of Draping Architecture, with the incorporation of sustainable design, such as: the green cell technology developed by Kuma Kengo Architects at the New Taipei Museum proposal.

Draping Architecture suggests a different kind of simulation that can be used to generate new forms, the visualisation demonstrates the cloth simulation plug-in to create the draping effect, through the adaptation of the parameters such as: gravity and wind, this allows the cloth form to behave differently.

The final form was refined by using 3DS Max modifier tools, such as: FFD Deform and Mesh Smooth tho create the desired effect.

Interactive Space Design Concept Developement, Context

Context: The installation will be located onto the ceiling of the Portico area of Newcastle Central Station, the main link between the station and the city. The Portico at present exists as an internal taxi rank, although it has a roof, it still remains open to the city influence which has proven to ruin its aesthetical charm and historical value. The area suffers also from the loud city sounds and prevailing winds from the Tyne River as it is currently external.

Concept The main concept of the project is to map the level of noises and traffic in the city by using dynamic cubes that responds to the level of decibel readings. The form of the insulation was an abstract model of the city, represented by cubes. The used technology for the ceiling insulation is Plexiglas with led lights. The decibel reader is located in several spot points distributed in the most populated roads and places around the city. It is connected to the ceiling insulation in the station. As a result the cubes move upward and downward in a real time according to the decibel reading.

Parametric Tower Concept

Utilising biomimetics in order to explore the natural structural formation as a suggestive tool used in the design of a skyscraper when in collaboration with parametric architecture via grasshopper, allowing the possibility of a one off morphogenic design through rotation which additionally allows the passage of natural sunlight and strong circulatory air flow through the whole building, naturally adapting to its surrounding conditions.
