These spaces, permanent and impermanent, create a hostile and frightening urban environment. The tunnel-like spaces are uncomfortable to walk through as there is only one path with little option for escape and narrow prospect, meaning you cannot see potential danger. It also creates danger when walking past these areas as it provides space for danger to hide. It is not that women believe that within every dark space lies imminent danger, but the fact is that if there was danger in these spaces there would be very little chance of escaping it. This creates yet another boundary that women must go through or avoid altogether.
