Throughout the city there are many empty shop fronts, meaning less reason to journey into the city centre. This creates inactive areas outside peak times of essential travel. Events Central will attempt to combat this, by initially addressing a single building with the expectation that this will spread city-wide. The most important intervention to create a comfortable city is to have active, mixed-use, spaces at ground-floor level.

Mixed-use spaces are especially important for women in the city–having a ‘porous’ city where the division between home, work, commercial and leisure space means that women are ‘less excluded from economic life.’ 72
