Oriental transformed from fishing culture

The site: Shapowei is located in the Siming District in Xiamen (Amoy), where there once existed a long history of fishing culture. In order to “shy away” from natural disasters, fishermen gathered in this site, shaped like a crescent blade, to avoid the clouds and rain. Gradually, the fish market appeared at the river bank, along with streets, and housing, which were erected by fishermen. There are two different “faces” of the site due to the different tides, bringing ecological diversity to the site.

The Spontaneous Living Section Shapowei is one of the most significant memorial places in Xiamen (Amoy). Apart from the requirement of designing the plaza, library, theater and keeping one old building on the site, for me, the environment is much more important than the architecture itself. Thus, I created a “lens” inside the new architecture, which is a continuous glass wall on the second floor and provides public space for people to observe, to record, and to experience the picturesque surrounding. The art exhibition room will hold some activities for visitors and residents, too. Therefore, the history and the culture will be connected tightly with people from now to the next generation. Meanwhile, this section of the project, as it is shown below, constitutes a harmonious scene of the fishermen’s houses, and the market on the other side of the sea.

What will be in the future? This project started with the research of decayed space, meaning the space and programs will evolve with time. I made a system model to illustrate how a place can be renovated from wildness to small construction. The main argument of this project is to think about how to create a decayed space in the future, or an intermediate space between wildness and landscape, within a city where people live, and to know the story about a place in the past.

In this paper mill, I try to introduce two kinds of materials, one is a brand new material which can reflect the light, such as the tile, glass, and curtain wall. Meanwhile, also preserve old materials such as brick, truss, and industrial remains. By organizing people’s movements to ensure that they feel the new and old co-exist together, and through the decay of old materials to feel the time pass, they can know the past of the site and think about the future. The paper mills will become the last landscape park for people in the future surrounded by skyscrapers in the city. The books inside also serve as a landscape material, connecting the past “paper manufacturing process and saving the knowledge for the future. 13

This project is a cooperative project between 5 people from 3 different fields: construction, landscape, architecture. The client chose the site in Bali district on the other side of Tamsui (cover photograph) in Taipei. The requirement was to design a connective bridge to link the main road to a commercial port. The concept “ship” derives from the site’s past history with the harbor. I try to create a graceful curve upon the sea and echo the image of the harbor that existed in the past.

Walking Trail

Sea The bridge contains an arch, a lane, and a walking loop, which is for people to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Bali District in Taipei. Here, people can jog, walk and take photos with their families. On the top of the loop is the lane for cars. Under the loop is the foundation, which supports the arch on top. The arch and the cables will serve as structural components to hold up the whole bridge, creating a graceful curve to connect the commercial area and the Bali District for cars, and pedestrians. The challenge of this project is to simply transform the natural landscape into the consideration of form, not only to satisfy the requirements but also to maintain the beautiful mountain landscape. 19

President Xi Jinping announced that the Chinese government will never give up using military force to unite Taiwan, creating new tension between China and Taiwan. Recently, more and more Taiwanese gradually recognize themselves as Taiwanese rather than Chinese which has accelerated the Chinese government’s steps to unite Taiwan with China. The border records the relationship, cultural recognition, and historical differences. Therefore, through the border landscape, I want people to perceive and consider this border (from Taiwan’s perspective) or frontiers (from China’s perspective), and how they exist in terms of differences in history, culture, politics, and economy. 21

Because of historical problems, the boundary or border between China and Taiwan is unclear and varies from time to time. From the map above we can see that the boundary exists in the middle line between China and Taiwan. However, because Taiwan still has an enclave remaining in China’s territory Kinmen(Quemoy). Therefore, the boundary is fuzzy, which influences the life, economy, strategy-making, along with the politics in Kinmen(Quemoy). Furthermore, the site, Houfeng port, which is on the bottom right corner, was influenced by that ambiguous geographical relationship. The port was reclaimed by concrete to create a commercial harbor for cruises from China. Therefore, this site is chosen to reflect the ambiguous boundary and its social, political, psychological and cultural aspects.

Borders and Ways for Experiencing

Circle around the islands

Through circling around the islands, people can experience the borders' existence and disappearance.

Crossing through the linked-islands

Some islands will be connecting together as tide goes up. Crossing through the middle part of multi-islands, people can experience how the islands separate and re-connect.

Contemplation through observation

Standing on the islands and staring at the cities on the other side of the sea to think about the difference between Taiwan and China.

On the beach, I try to use the islands as architectural design language to the landscape architecture and apply this design strategy to the area between the memorial park and the village, which is a buffer or intermediate zone. The design requirement is from the residents. This intermediate zone can serve as connective tissue between park and village and it would be better than just place a memorial park in front of the village, creating a direct impact on the village.

In the last two decades, before the site was reclaimed by the government of Taiwan, this site used to be a place fulling with ecological lives, fishing boat, and some rare Intertidal creatures. This museum aims at re-constructing a media: museum architecture for people to know the past and think of the land, our earth in the future.

History Exhibition (High Tide)

This scene shows how residents previously stop their boats on the beach and see the comparison between Xiamen (Amoy) and Kinmen (Quemoy).

As the tide goes up, the boats will float, people can have a chance to know how this site and people have such a close relationship with the environment.

Tencent New Headquarter

Tencent Old Headquarter

The site is located at Shenzhen, one of the Special Economic Zone in China. Tencent company initiates its business in this city. At 2009, Tencent has their own headquarter in Shenzhen and In 2017, The NBBJ finished the new headquarter to convey health, knowledge, and social connection to the society. Now, how to base on the culture of Tencent to create new scheme to adapt to the development of Tencent is the challenge.

Combinatory Language Study(Morphology)

Draft Model

In this scheme, the left side of this model is too linear and not supposed to be so identical and arrays linearly. Meanwhile, the Z-Axis lacks a variability in terms of form, height, and distance, along with the lack of enough X and Y line on the surface.

Final conceptual Model

Within this scheme, it looks much more controllable and variable. The red X and Y lines consist the possible circulations of the site. The tower represents the possible high-rise buildings in the future. Meanwhile, the surface and volume can transform to landscape architecture.

Partial Section C Combinatory Language study is a conceptual form operation strategy puts forward by Professor Thom Mayne through manipulating different shapes and using boolean subtraction to create voe and empty space in a different way. In the next steps, we need to discuss the different schemes base on the programs, scale, environment, and dimension of the site to revise this conceptual model. Finally, the project will be much reasonable and meaningful from an urban designer’s perspective. 43

A large amount of the programs are Research and Development. There are three bridges connect the Tencent Campus to the Shenzhen. Meanwhile, plazas spread out along the edge of the site to create enough public spaces in the city for employees and citizens.

Within the Research and Development, there exists a private pocket landscape park for the employee to relax and some small paths for passing through. In the middle, a stadium is placed here for public and private collectively use. On the right side are some amenities for public use and recreation.

The different scale of separations is spreading with the programs to create public and private connections. The towers transform the programs from horizontal to vertical, creating a series of skyscrapers to echo with the skyscrapers on the other side of the Shenzhen Bay.

From the long section, as we can observe that the combinatory language is not only using in plan but also use in section to create cutting between the skyscraper and 5~6 floor building underneath

Entry and Stadium

This diagram illustrates the entrance of the site, showing how people walking or taking bicycles circle around this area and how the employee gets into the R & D area. Meanwhile, the landscape, water, island are placed in the public plaza for public use.

Plaza 1 and residential

Underneath the R & D center, I make some entrances for people from the public plaza to enter into the building. On the first floor, I placed some commercial program, trying to activate the vitality of the plaza.

This diagram showing how to Extend the bridge to the R & D in the site and using the combinatory language to make sure the circumference of the plaza is the extension of the curve of the bridge to create a continuous public space.

Tencent working space and Pocket park

Within the R & D, the atrium not only connects the working space but also connects with the private pocket landscape park. The purple space, as the diagram shows, connect with the left working space. The tower gives the employee a nice view and an ideal working environment. 49

The influence of the city-scape

The Combinatory language of the city Within the site, I try to use combinatory language through subtraction and manipulation of different forms to create public spaces. This strategy, should not only limited in the site but also influence the whole Shenzhen city landscape as you can see the combinatory language extending from the site to the surrounding Shenzhen Bay area. When the citizen takes a stroll along the continuous circular landscape park to enter the site, they can experience the picturesque landscape and enjoy the best service given by Tencent company in the future to create a better, healthy, and convenient life.

Landscape Design

In the landscape design, what differs from architecture and urban design are the issues of time, plants’ size and the relationship between feature and culture. In this part, I was required to design a water feature, public chairs, light which consider its different moment in day time and night time, 3D model, and renderings. Therefore, based on the idea of cascade with reflective material, I proposed a flying-fish sculpture to create the visual and cultural link to people( Previously this place is a fishing village). The plane in below showing how people interact with the environment and different scene in day time and night time.
