JOIN THE ADVENTURE Let your GPS guide you on an adventure in and around Royal Deeside’s majestic scenery and hidden gems. Special geocaches have been hidden at 20 sites along the Deeside Way in forest trails, around lochs and at splendid viewpoints. If you’re new to geocaching this handy guide of common geocaching terms will help you get to grips with this fun, family-friendly activity.


USEFUL GEOCACHING TERMS D/T:

GC code:

Ground zero:

Difficulty and Terrain rating of a cache in a scale of 1 – 5. A D/T rating of 1/1 being the easiest. Unique identifier given to every cache listed on the geocaching.com website. Ground Zero or GZ is the point where the cache is hidden.


USEFUL GEOCACHING TERMS Groundspeak: The ruling company of online geocaching which manages geocaching.com. Muggle: A non-geocacher. Muggled: The discovery of a cache by a non-geocacher, often used in relation to the cache itself when it has been removed in ignorance or otherwise by a muggle.


USEFUL GEOCACHING TERMS Cache/cacher: Shortened and much used version of geocache and geocacher. Disable: Temporarily removing a cache listing from the geocaching.com website until a problem with it is fixed. DNF: Did Not Find. Archive: To permanently remove a cache listing on the geocaching.com website.

Bring Your Own Pen – used to highlight when there is not a pen in the container. First To Find – first person to write in the physical log as opposed to first to the online log. The physical and online record which cachers must sign when finding a physical cache.

Spoiler:

A cacher who pays a small annual fee to Groundspeak and gains extra benefits. A volunteer who reviews all new caches to ensure they follow Groundspeak rules and guidelines. Something that gives away the location of the cache – usually a photograph.

Something We All Get – trade items left in caches to swap with fellow cachers. A travelbug or geocoin with a unique tracking number that can be used to track the item’s progress around the world as it is passed amongst fellow geocachers. Thanks For The Cache – the minimal entry in a log.
