As a native of the North East of Scotland I admit to being biased, but I
truly believe we have some of the world’s finest and most memorable golf courses in this area - courses which, played once, just have to be played again and again. Two which are very close to my heart are the charming riverside course at Banchory on Royal Deeside where I learned my trade as a professional and the magnificent links at Carnoustie venue of my Open Championship success in 1999. The superb new Trump International Links will attract visitors from all around the world but we also have a marvellous variety of links and parkland layouts all within very easy reach of Aberdeen - the Granite City. I am thrilled to now have my own Golf Centre on the outskirts of the city where you can learn the game, hone your skills and play our picturesque nine hole layout. CRAIL Situated on the easternmost tip of Fife are two links courses that are home to Crail Golfing Society. Formed in 1786, the society is the seventh oldest in Scotland.
Balcomie is the elder statesman of the pair, with the first balls being hit on its 5,861 yards in 1895. Offering stunning views of the coastline, this Old Tom Morris designed par 69 requires accuracy and will catch out golfers who get seduced by the scenery. Designed by Gil Hanse, Craighead opened in 1998 and runs to over 6,700 yards. No two consecutive holes face the same direction, meaning managing the wind can be tricky. The course itself provides plenty of challenges, including a right angle dogleg at the second and a 1,200-year-old defensive dyke that straddles a number of holes.

KINGSBARNS
Since the late 18th century, golf has been played on the links land of Kingsbarns. It has been interrupted though by a farmer ploughing the land to grow crops and the military commandeering it during World War II. Designed by American Kyle Phillips, today’s 18-hole, par 72 links course is a more modern affair, only opening in 2000. Running to a mammoth 7,181 yards, Kingsbarns has wide, open fairways that roll over undulating ridges and hollows. With a good mix of long par 5s and short par 3s it throws down the gauntlet to even the keenest golfer. Stretched out along the Fife coastline, nearly every hole provides dramatic views of the North Sea. Although a youngster in golfing terms, Kingsbarns has earned a reputation that sees it frequently mentioned alongside some of the world’s greatest courses.

CARNOUSTIE Carnoustie is considered the hardest course on The Open rota, and one of the toughest golfing challenges in the world. Yet, that is this great course’s attraction. After years in the Open wilderness, Carnoustie returned in 1999 and spectacularly tested some of the world’s greatest golfers with Paul Lawrie claiming a memorable victory for Scotland.
While essentially flat, Carnoustie’s 6,941 yards reward accurate play. Each of the 18 holes present a challenge and most hazards are located to punish a shot that is just slightly off the mark.
Set amidst the Perthshire countryside, Blairgowrie lies at the foothills of the Grampian Mountains and its golf club is home to a pair of fine inland championship courses.
Rosemount can trace its origins back to the club’s inception in 1889, but its layout today is the work of Dr. Alister MacKenzie and James Braid. Measuring 6,630 yards, the course pitches and rolls through avenues of trees, offering a good variety of holes. The best is saved to last, with the par 3 17th being noteworthy for its two-tier green.
The finish is particularly tough. The 14th boasts the intimidating ‘Spectacles’ bunkers – if entered they’re difficult to exit. At the 18th the sinuous Barry Burn is the riveting element which must be crossed twice to reach home in safety. Carnoustie is a links with an allure like no other.

The par 72 Lansdowne opened in 1979. Running to over 6,850 yards it is slightly longer than its older brother, but accuracy is again required as the golfer threads their ball along the tree-lined fairways. Although serving up a taxing round, it’s one that’s a joy to play.

PETERCULTER Founded in 1989, Peterculter Golf Club is situated on the banks of the River Dee in some of the most beautiful scenery in Aberdeenshire.
The 18-hole course is spread over several terraces and follows the natural contours of the river bank offering a fair test to all golfers. Challenging par 4s test skills to the full, while the par 3s and 5s provide particular interest – the latter tantalisingly reachable in two with a good drive. The greens are meticulously kept and well-guarded. Players can’t fail to be inspired during their round by the panoramic views of the Dee valley with the imposing Grampian Mountains in the distance. With careful management Peterculter has matured into a course which is a joy to play.

Set on the banks of the River Dee, Banchory Golf Club is a picturesque 18-hole course which offers a challenge to golfers of all standards. Though not over long at 5,800 yards – don’t be fooled. Strategically placed bunkers, mature native trees and the “magnetic” Dee provide obstacles to test even the most accomplished player.
Six Open Champions have played the course – Harry Vardon, George Duncan, Arthur Havers, Alf Padgham, Max Faulkner and most recently Paul Lawrie, who was an assistant professional at Banchory from 1986 – 1990. All of them found some of the holes to be a real challenge. From one of the shortest holes in Scottish golf, the 88-yard Doo’cot, to some of the most testing long holes, Banchory has something for everyone.

ABOYNE The dramatic scenery that is in abundance along the Dee valley forms the backdrop to the 18hole course of Aboyne Golf Club, which sits in rolling countryside nestled beside Aboyne Loch. Its location offers fine views of Royal Deeside and its beautiful wildlife, including ospreys.
A warm welcome awaits visitors to Aboyne, where golf has been played since the late nineteenth century. The current course was first laid out in 1905 and the well-maintained par 68 layout provides a solid test for all golfers. The round has a rich variety of memorable holes that make the most of the terrain’s natural variations. Mature trees and water are in play at many holes, with Aboyne Loch being a potential watery grave for the unwary. The final hole is a long par 3 that fittingly completes a superb round of golf.

Tarland Golf Club is set in the midst of beautiful Royal Deeside and rewards golfers with stunning views of the countryside. Of particular note is the view from the 8th fairway across the Dee valley to the magnificent Lochnagar – memorable at all times of the year.
Designed by Old Tom Morris in 1908, this nine-hole parkland course represents a challenge to golfers of all abilities. Playing to nearly 6,000 yards when played to 18 holes, the well-maintained course with its smooth greens and great fairways is certainly no pushover. This Morris masterpiece may be small, but it is a delight to play. Combine it with the tranquil setting, dramatic scenery and the warm welcome, and Tarland provides a perfect day at a wonderful course.

BALLATER Ballater Golf Club nestles in one of the most beautiful parts of Royal Deeside. Lying in a circle of hills, and with several holes close to the River Dee, the course offers a round with glorious views.
Founded in 1892 as a nine-hole course, it was extended to 18 holes in 1905. To celebrate the course’s extension and the creation of a new pavilion, a match was staged the following year between well known golfers James Braid and Harry Vardon. A mixture of parkland and heathland, Ballater is a slightly undulating, medium length course. The ancient river terraces formed on the floodplain give the course a distinctive style and make for interesting play. For sheer scenic splendour the 414–yard, par 4, 11th hole takes some beating.

Situated at the foot of the majestic Grampian Mountains, 1,200 feet above sea level, Braemar Golf Club has the distinction of being the highest 18-hole golf course in Britain.
Split in two by the River Clunie, this par 65, 4,935-yard course is tough for its length as water plays a large part in 12 of the 18 holes. The second hole is the signature hole. At 369 yards it sounds short, but the fairway lies between heavy rough and the River Clunie. The second shot is to a large elevated green making the hole play much longer than it looks. Despite its altitude the greens are of a high standard and the course is very popular with holidaymakers and golfing societies.

ROYAL ABERDEEN Royal Aberdeen Golf Club is the sixth oldest club in the world, founded in 1903, but can trace its roots back to 1780 when its forerunner, The Society of Golfers at Aberdeen, was founded.
In 1888, the club moved to the present course, Balgownie Links, where it established one of the country’s most natural links courses. Set in dramatic sand dunes overlooking the North Sea, the course’s 6,900 yards provide a true test which are also a joy to play. The opening nine holes are rated by many as amongst the finest holes in links golf anywhere in the world. Over the years Royal Aberdeen has welcomed the top golfers of the time, including Old Tom Morris, Walter Hagen, Tony Lema, Tom Watson and Greg Norman, to name but a few, all keen to play a classic Scottish links course. Many top amateur and professional events have been staged over Balgownie Links, including the 2011 Walker Cup.

Originally designed by Archie Simpson and opened in 1909, the course was refined in the 1930’s by James Braid and recent alterations and improvements have been carried out under the watchful eye of Graeme Webster. Murcar frequently features in the top 100 ranked courses in the UK and over the years has hosted many professional tournaments and amateur championships. NEWBURGH-ON-YTHAN Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club is set against a dramatic backdrop of the River Ythan, the North Sea and the ever-changing Forvie sand dunes.
Newburgh-on-Ythan Golf Club was founded in 1888 on the Udny links, and is set against a dramatic backdrop of the Ythan Estuary, the North Sea and the everchanging dunes of the Sands of Forvie National Nature Reserve, and is just 2 miles up the coast from Trump International Golf Links, Scotland. The course has enormous variety, with every hole presenting a different challenge, and great fun to play (so says Golf World which ranked Newburgh as number 32 in their listing of “fun courses” in Great Britain and Ireland). MORAY OLD-LOSSIEMOUTH Where else could you follow in the footsteps of Old Tom Morris and Henry Cotton on the same day?
Formed in 1889, Moray Golf Club is situated on the southern shores of the Moray Firth and boasts two 18-hole courses. The Old Course, considered by many one of Scotland’s finest, was designed by Old Tom Morris and is a classic links with deep revetted bunkers, undulating gorse-lined fairways and smooth fast greens. Henry Cotton’s preference for precision golf can be seen in the shorter and somewhat tighter New Course. Although not as long as the Old Course and boasting smaller greens, it is still equally challenging and rewarding. Moray is a tribute to the artistry of two of golfing greats and not to be missed.

Nestled on the shores of the Moray Firth, Nairn Golf Club is among the finest links courses in Scotland.
When you consider the illustrious names that have had a hand in shaping it, it comes as no surprise. The course has hosted many championship matches; most recently the Walker Cup and the Curtis Cup. Nairn’s 6,774 yards equally rewards and tests the golfer. Each hole boasts spectacular sea views, but the firm, fast and narrow gorse-lined fairways require accuracy. On any of the first seven holes a poor strike could result in the ball visiting the sea. The greens are fast and true, but sited in difficult spots, with most well protected. This is a classic Scottish out-and-back course that is a must-play.

CASTLE STUART A recent addition to golf in the Highlands, but since it opened in 2009 Castle Stuart has earned a reputation as offering one of the finest rounds in the world. As the venue for the Scottish Open between 2011 and 2013, it has welcomed some of the sport’s biggest names who have been blown away by this links course.
Set over 7,009 yards on the shores of the Moray Firth, the course serves up striking views of Highland landmarks. The first four holes and holes 10-12 are literally on the sea; holes 5-9 sit atop an old sea cliff; while the final six holes have the highest elevations and feel like the balcony of this stunning golfing theatre.
The name of few courses can stir the emotions the way that Royal Dornoch does. This Sutherland club is feted by golfers around the world keen to play in this timeless setting. Home to two 18-hole links courses, Royal Dornoch will test and thrill in equal measure.
The Championship course runs to over 6,700 spellbinding yards along the curving bay of the Dornoch Firth. Rolling fairways lead to inverted saucer-like elevated greens that were introduced by Old Tom Morris and can make approach shots a little challenging.
It delivers a performance that’s a fair test of golf that intrigues, engages and is punctuated with a little mystery.

NEWMACHAR Located in rolling countryside on the outskirts of Aberdeen, Newmachar Golf Club is home to two exceptional 18-hole courses. Both courses were designed by Dave Thomas, with Hawkshill opening in 1990 and Swailend following seven years later.
Despite its youth, Hawkshill looks and feels more mature than its age suggests, mainly due to the stately pine and birch trees flanking the fairways. With clever bunkering and water hazards coming into play in no fewer than seven of the holes, this is one of the area’s toughest tracks. Swailend is not as mentally challenging as its older brother, but its subtle contours, well positioned bunkers and testing greens present every standard of golfer with a challenge which should not be underestimated. Although challenging, Newmachar provides two memorable golfing experiences.
