UNDER THE RADAR FREEHELD (12A)

Julianne Moore stars in this drama based on a true story, playing a decorated New Jersey police detective who is diagnosed with cancer and wants to leave her pension to her partner (Ellen Page, Juno). When county officials conspire to prevent this, detective Michael Shannon and activist Steve Carell unite to rally police officers and ordinary citizens to support their struggle for equality. First released in 1999, this ‘signature edition’ of the animated family classic has been remastered with additional scenes. Based on the novel by Ted Hughes, the story is set in Maine in 1958 and follows young Hogarth as he befriends a giant robot and tries to protect him from a government investigator. “FUNNY AND HEARTWARMING” The Guardian

The University of Northampton’s Cult Film Club present Walter Hill’s 1979 action thriller following a street gang in New York who are falsely accused of the murder of a respected gang leader. They must fight their way home while every other gang is hunting them down to kill them.

We celebrate the work of the great British director with three of his classic thrillers and an insightful documentary.

VERTIGO (PG)

Winner of the 2015 Cannes Best Screenplay award, this is an enigmatic and deeply moving character study from Mexican auteur Michel Franco (After Lucia). Tim Roth plays David, a dedicated nurse who works with terminally ill patients, whilst struggling privately with his own ongoing burden of guilt and remorse. Regularly voted the greatest film of all time, this 1958 thriller was initially dismissed when first released. James Stewart plays a detective suffering from acrophobia, who investigates the strange behaviour of a friend’s wife whilst becoming obsessed with her. HHHHH “GRIPPING” Empire

In this 1959 spy adventure, Cary Grant plays a hapless New York advertising executive who is mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies, and pursued across the country. HHHHH “MAGNIFICENT” Daily Telegraph

In 1962, François Truffaut and Hitchcock sequestered themselves in a weeklong series of conversations, resulting in the seminal book “Hitchcock/Truffaut”. In this documentary, director Kent Jones interviews filmmakers who have been influenced by the work, including Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Richard Linklater and more.
