SEPTEMBER Recently named amongst the top films of all time by the BFI, Jacques Tati’s glorious Parisian comedy about confusion in an age of high technology was the artistic high point for his world-famous, lovably old-fashioned clown Monsieur Hulot. For the first time, it will now be adapted into a vibrant stage production by Royal & Derngate’s resident company Dancing Brick, an award-winning international group of physical theatremakers celebrated for their comic and visual ingenuity. As we return to our town centres after the pandemic, this big hearted, hilarious and utterly unforgettable story shows a teeming metropolis trying – and often failing! – to get to grips with a baffling modern world. Verity Bargate Award-winning playwright Thomas Eccleshare (Instructions for Correct Assembly, Royal Court) and director Valentina Ceschi (Heather, Bush Theatre) will bring this dazzling film to life on the Royal stage, with original songs by Grammy Award-winning composer Chilly Gonzales. In an age defined by division, Playtime will be a joyful reminder of our shared humanity in all its beauty, chaos and of course, comedy!

“ANTON LESSER AND NICHOLAS WOODESON ARE, QUITE SIMPLY, DIVINE” WhatsOnStage
From the writer of the Academy Award-winning Bohemian Rhapsody, Darkest Hour, and The Theory of Everything, comes the play that sparked a major motion picture. Nine years ago, Pope Benedict XVI stunned the world by resigning, the first Pope in 700 years to do so. What drove this arch conservative to break with sacred tradition and make way for a one-time tango club bouncer, football-loving reformer with the common touch to become Pope Francis, one of the most powerful men on earth? Starring Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones, The Crown, Endeavour) and Nicholas Woodeson (Baptiste, The Death of Stalin, The Danish Girl) this gripping and entertaining play from Anthony McCarten premiered at Royal & Derngate, Northampton in 2019 and was adapted into the multi-award-winning film for which McCarten was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA Awards. It now returns to Royal & Derngate as part of a major new tour. Directed by Royal & Derngate’s Artistic Director James Dacre (2020 Olivier Award nominee for Our Lady of Kibeho) with original music by Grammy and BRIT Award-winning composer Anne Dudley. The Two Popes is a fascinating and humorous story that shines a light into one of the world’s most secretive institutions. At its heart lies a timeless question: in moments of crisis, should we follow the rules or our conscience?

AN INTIMATE NEW CABARET CAPTURED ON FILM A cutting-edge new musical about identity, sexuality, and what makes us who we are. An hour-long song-cycle weaves a path from cabaret artist Jessica Walker’s (Alone in Berlin) emotionally complex childhood right up to her very particular wedding day, with songs about early gender confusion, sexual assault, first love and betrayal, and family secrets. It is a powerful, personal story with universal themes, expressed through Atkins and Walker’s uncategorisable musical mix of humour, classicism, torch, and a touch of Eighties synth.

Booking Information BOX OFFICE OPENING HOURS Our Box Office is open from 10am until 15 minutes after the last performances commences Tuesday-Saturday. Counter service is available from 12noon Tuesday-Friday and from 10am on Saturday. On Sundays, Mondays and Bank Holidays it is open in person only from 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to the first performance commencing. We are now a cash-free venue, in order to reduce contact at our bars and Box Office. We accept all major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You can also pay with National Theatre Tokens or Royal & Derngate gift vouchers.
DISCOUNTS/CONCESSIONS Under 16s, Over 60s, Students, Job Seekers and Disabled Patrons may be able to claim a discount on their tickets. Please let us know if you are eligible for a concession at the time of booking and note that at some performances only certain types of concession may apply. • Stage & Screen Members also often make savings on our regular ticket prices. • For selected performances an allocation of tickets can be purchased at reduced prices by Groups who also benefit from extended payment terms and a dedicated team member to support their booking. • Our Subscribe & Save packages offer reduced prices when booking for three or more shows – details on page 52. • Only one discount can be applied per ticket and all discounts are subject to availability and may be withdrawn at any time. • When booking performances that allow free entry for babes-in-arms, please inform Box Office how many you will be bringing. Age limits for free babes-in-arms tickets can vary.
TICKET DELIVERY Tickets can be sent electronically free of charge and may be printed at home or displayed on a smart phone upon entry. There is a £1.50 fee applicable to post your tickets to a UK address. We recommend that we do not post any tickets booked within 10 days of the performance, and instead will hold them at the Box Office for collection and £1 fee applies for this service.
TRANSACTION FEE A transaction charge of £3.50 applies to all bookings of £20 and over, except for Members, Disabled Patrons and Group Bookers. This charge is only applicable
54
per‑booking and not per-ticket. The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. We will continue to tell you about these charges when you book tickets with us.
CONDITIONS OF SALE Once purchased, tickets are non-refundable except where a show is cancelled or postponed. Ticket exchanges may be offered for the same production on payment of a small per ticket fee. For sold out shows we will accept returned tickets for re-sale up to 24 hours prior on the understanding that a gift voucher (less transaction fees) will be provided if the tickets are re-sold. Any tickets found to be sold via an unauthorised agent may be void without refund and the ticket holder refused entry. When booking, customers now have the option to add refund protection to their tickets via a third party provider, Booking Protect. This protects your ticket should you be unable to attend a show for reasons outside of your control such as illness. Please visit our website for full details on our conditions of sale.
STAYING IN TOUCH Our Box Office and website will ask when you book if you wish to receive further information from us about Royal & Derngate’s events and activities. We will record your wishes and use them to inform what you receive from us in future. You can update these preferences at any time by accessing your account via our website or by calling Box Office. Full information on how we use your data can be found at www.royalandderngate.co.uk/privacy.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS All details were correct at time of going to print. We reserve the right to make any alterations to the programme, performers, times, ticket prices and Box Office opening hours. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. All prices are subject to change. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase. Some events or performances may be advertised in the national media prior to publication in the brochure and this is beyond the control of the Management.
