MADE IN NORTHAMPTON 2015
Our work has travelled far and wide so far this season. After King John playing only feet away from the Magna Carta in Salisbury Cathedral on the anniversary of its signing, The Hook opened in Liverpool just hours after the first Merseyside dockers voted to strike in almost a decade. Our first production this Autumn will also be followed by a National Tour. Brave New World sees celebrated playwright Dawn King adapt Aldous Huxley’s groundbreaking dystopian masterpiece with original music by These New Puritans. Asking whether it is better to be free and unhappy or to live in enforced ‘happiness’, our version of Brave New World will raise tantalising questions about the ways that we currently live our lives, imagining how tomorrow’s world might look as a consequence of today’s choices. The gripping psychological drama Gaslight brings director Lucy Bailey to Northampton. Her visionary productions of The Postman Only Rings Twice and Dial M For Murder have redefined the art of the theatrical thriller. Starring Tara Fitzgerald and designed by William Dudley, the play promises to vividly explore some of the more terrifying aspects of the Victorian psyche. Before we know it, Christmas will then be upon us and we’re thrilled this year to be producing Georgia Pritchett’s mischievous retelling of The Snow Queen with joyful original songs by Dougal Irvine. Finally, The Herbal Bed will open here in Northampton ahead of a national tour. Based upon the secret life of Shakespeare’s daughter, I’m thrilled to be directing this powerful expose of the contradiction between human desire and social convention which seeks to repress it. It is also a beautiful evocation of Shakespearian England which offers a visceral, tender and wise portrait of a family in crisis.

WORLD PREMIERE PART OF 2015 SEASON TICKET
Aldous Huxley’s ground-breaking satire, adapted for the stage for the first time by Dawn King, is opening at Royal & Derngate this September before a major national tour. Welcome to the future, where a genetically engineered class system has finally brought order and stability to the world. This Brave New World has no family, religion or war. Lust and pleasure have replaced love and art. People are safe, healthy and not afraid of death. They get what they want, and they never want what they can’t have. Everyone is happy now. When this stability is threatened, one young woman learns the pain of love and one young man gives in to the love of pain.
A co-production with the Touring Consortium Theatre Company
First written in 1932, Brave New World shines a blazing light on our present. This world premiere production will be directed by Artistic Director James Dacre with original music by These New Puritans, whose last album was described by Record Collector as “arguably the musical achievement of the 2010s so far.”

“I have always wanted that which I cannot have.”
PART OF 2015 SEASON TICKET A co-production with English Touring Theatre and Rose Theatre Kingston
Director James Dacre
When William Shakespeare’s daughter is publicly accused of adultery with her neighbour, her husband chooses to stand by her, suing her accuser for slander. In doing so, their lives fall under the glare of intense public scrutiny in this emotional thriller, based upon real events from Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer of 1613. A powerful exposé of the contradiction between human desire and social convention which seeks to repress it, Peter Whelan’s moving and uplifting play provides a beautiful evocation of life in Shakespearian England. It was first produced to great acclaim by the Royal Shakespeare Company before transferring to the West End and Broadway. The Herbal Bed is directed by Artistic Director James Dacre, whose previous direction of Peter Whelan’s The Accrington Pals in 2013 led to great critical acclaim for a “profoundly moving production” (The Guardian). “MARVELLOUS, TENDER, WISE AND GENEROUS OF SPIRIT… A REMARKABLY PERSUASIVE AND TOUCHING PORTRAIT OF A FAMILY IN CRISIS” DAILY TELEGRAPH ON THE HERBAL BED #HerbalBed

The support we receive from our funders and partners is vital to ensuring that the theatres continue to thrive. However, we need to increase our income levels, in general, to renovate areas of our busy building, to improve the technical and backstage facilities, to maintain the scale and ambition of our Made In Northampton productions, and to extend the impact of our work with children and young people both at the theatres and increasingly in schools and community settings. Like many other regional theatres we expect subsidy levels to reduce in the coming years.

TRANSACTION CHARGES This season we are making changes to the transaction charges that will apply to your booking, with most customers benefiting from a small reduction in cost. The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. As ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices may not necessarily benefit the theatre. By adding a transaction charge, we ensure that every penny goes directly to Royal & Derngate. We will continue to charge a ‘per booking’ charge, not ‘per ticket’, which makes our charges lower than many other theatres. We will continue to tell you about these charges, whether you are booking online, over the phone or at the counter. So, what changes have we made this season? • We have reduced our transaction charge to £2.50 per booking for all our customers
It is still possible to avoid the transaction charge, with many paying no charge at all, including: • Members of our Friends, Gold and Artistic Director’s schemes
• We have removed the fee completely for any transaction totaling under £15
• Anyone booking eight or more tickets for a single performance as part of a Group Booking
• We are now charging for in-person bookings made at our Box Office Counter, in line with phone and website/mobile bookings
• Customers whose transaction totals £15 or less • Subscribers – on their bookings for Made In Northampton and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra seasons • Disabled Patrons
For more information about our charges visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk

At Royal & Derngate, we are committed to an accessible pricing policy and offer discounts wherever possible. In some instances, ticket prices and available discounts are dictated by external promoters and there is no flexibility for the provision of discounts. The above represent our usual discounts, however there are a number of shows every season where slightly different concessions apply. A separate discount and pricing structure applies to our Orchestral Season. Box Office will advise if these exceptions affect your tickets at time of booking. Only one concession type applies per ticket. All concessions are subject to availability and some may only be available for a limited period. Proof of status will be required on the first purchase of a concessionary ticket and can be checked on any subsequent ticket purchase.

Unlike many other theatres, this fee is only applicable per-booking and not perticket. It has been introduced to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate.
