But inspired by his wife Elspeth, Howe destroyed the Prime Minister’s career with one of the deadliest political speeches ever made.

Richard Alston’s latest work is inspired by the sonatas of Scarlatti, a composer hugely influenced by Spanish music. An Italian In Madrid continues Alston’s fascination with the fusion of different cultures and styles and to explore this, Alston has invited BBC Young Dancer grand finalist Vidya Patel to join his company for this exciting new work. Join the seven million theatregoers worldwide who have experienced “the most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will ever encounter” (Daily Telegraph). A lawyer is obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a ‘woman in black’, and engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but then, as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a

world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. Susan Hill’s acclaimed ghost story comes alive in Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation. This gripping production, directed by Robin Herford, is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror. “THE AUDIENCE WERE JUMPING OUT OF THEIR SEATS” THE OBSERVER “DON’T GO UNLESS YOU LIKE BEING SCARED OUT OF YOUR WITS” SUNDAY MIRROR

MADE IN NORTHAMPTON 2016

We have recently finished an ambitious festival to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. It featured four flagship productions – The Herbal Bed, King Lear, The Complete Deaths and The Tempest – with all but the last touring the country subsequent to their premieres in Northampton. It also saw us create an extraordinary programme of activity for our local community to immerse themselves in. As ever, the passion and imagination of our collaborators and in-house teams ensured that this quartet of productions was able to introduce audiences old and new to the enduring power and value of Shakespeare’s work. This Autumn, our celebrated 2014 production of A Tale Of Two Cities, written by Mike Poulton with original music by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman, will return. Following sold out previews in Northampton earlier in the year and an acclaimed international tour, we are also thrilled to welcome back The Complete Deaths, on which Tim Crouch has collaborated with anarchic Northampton favourites Spymonkey to mischievously stage all of Shakespeare’s death scenes. At Christmas, the magical tale of Peter And The Starcatcher will receive its European premiere on the Royal stage. A huge hit on Broadway in 2012, it won five Tony Awards and the Drama Desk Award for its glorious music, going on to become one of the most produced plays in America the following year year. Meanwhile, we will magically transform the Underground Studio for Second Star To The Right, an interactive adventure through Neverland designed to introduce Under 7s to how imaginative immersive theatre can be. We look forward to welcoming you to Royal & Derngate this season.

Following its celebrated premiere as part of our Made In Northampton 2014 season, our UK Theatre Award-nominated production returns to the Royal stage for one week only ahead of a major national tour. In an age of increasing political unrest across the world, this bold dramatic adaptation by Mike Poulton (Fortune’s Fool, Old Vic; Wolf Hall, RSC) set to rousing original music by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman (The Cider House Rules, Beloved) is frighteningly relevant. It is directed by Artistic Director James Dacre, designed by Mike Britton (Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, To Sir With Love) and will again feature one of the largest acting companies to ever appear on the Royal’s stage. “DICKENSIAN SYMMETRIES, POLARITIES AND IRONIES – THE BEST AND WORST OF TIMES – ARE KEENLY REFLECTED IN THIS SPLENDID PRODUCTION” THE OBSERVER “A LEAN PUNCHY ADAPTATION OF CHARLES DICKENS’ CLASSIC TALE” DAILY TELEGRAPH “LOOKS STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL” THE TIMES “ASSURED, AND HIGHLY WATCHABLE” THE INDEPENDENT #TOTCTour16

A co-production with Spymonkey and Brighton Festival Adaptor & Director Tim Crouch Spymonkey Aitor Basauri, Stephan Kreiss, Petra Massey and Toby Park Designer Lucy Bradridge Lighting Phil Supple Original music Toby Park Video Design Sam Bailey CONCESSIONS FRIENDS & MEMBERS POST SHOW TALK

There are 75 onstage deaths in the works of William Shakespeare: from the Roman suicides in Julius Caesar to the death fall of Prince Arthur in King John; from the carnage at the end of Hamlet to snakes in a basket in Antony And Cleopatra. And then there’s the pie in Titus Andronicus. After selling out their previews of this production at Royal & Derngate in May, Spymonkey (Every Last Trick, Cooped, Oedipussy, Moby Dick) return to perform all of the deaths – sometimes lingeringly, sometimes messily, sometimes movingly, sometimes musically, always hysterically. These four “seriously, outrageously, cleverly funny clowns” (Time Magazine) will scale the peaks of sublime poetry, and plumb the depths of darkest depravity. It may even be the death of them. Adapted and directed by Tim Crouch (The Author, Adler & Gibb Royal Court), The Complete Deaths is a solemn, sombre and sublimely funny tribute to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. #TheCompleteDeaths Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England

ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

SAINT-SAËNS’ ORGAN SYMPHONY SUN 27 NOVEMBER 7.30PM

To celebrate its 70th Anniversary, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will join forces with the Northampton Bach Choir for a concert of orchestral and choral masterpieces. Opening the concert in regal style will be Handel’s Zadok The Priest; performed at every British coronation since 1727, this piece ceremoniously opens with layered strings before bursting with choral joy. The concert will then take on a distinctly French flavour with Saint-Saëns’ devilish Danse Macabre - recognisable as the theme from the TV series Jonathan Creek - and Poulenc’s Gloria for which the outstanding soprano Elin Pritchard joins the Orchestra. Saint-Saëns’ grand ‘Organ’ Symphony closes this Autumn concert. From the brief and haunting introduction to the layered brass finale, this piece soars to the heavens.

TRANSACTION CHARGES The transaction charge exists to support the running costs of Royal & Derngate. We charge a ‘per booking’ charge, not ‘per ticket’, which makes our charges lower than many other theatres. Don’t forget, you don’t pay this charge if you are a member of our Friends, Gold or Artistic Director’s schemes; if you book eight or more tickets for a single performance as part of a Group Booking; if your transaction is less than £15; if you are booking a subscription for Made In Northampton or Royal Philharmonic Orchestra seasons or if you are a Disabled Patron.
